Cargo Insurance

Cargo insurance is optional cover you buy once, before shipping, with its value set by the value of the goods that you declare. Most shipments arrive sound, but insurance is there for the case you would rather not think about.

What does the insurance cover?

• Damage from transport accidents — overturning, collision or a fall during handling.
• Total loss of the shipment, or of a whole package within it.
• Damage from exceptional conditions during the sea or air voyage.

What does it usually not cover?

• Defects already in the piece before shipping — which is why we photograph furniture before packing.
• Items not listed in the contents list.
• Damage from packing the customer did inadequately themselves.
• Late arrival, which is not damage.
• Items prohibited from shipping in the first place.

How is the cover value set?

You write an estimated value for your shipment’s contents, and the cost of insurance is worked out as a percentage of it. Do not overstate it, as that raises the cost for no benefit, and do not understate it, as compensation is based on the declared value, not the true one.

What speeds up compensation, if it comes to that?

• Photos of the furniture before packing.
• A numbered contents list for each box.
• Recording the remark on receipt, before signing.
• Photos of the damaged piece and its box, outside and inside.

Is insurance compulsory?

No. But we advise it in two cases: a shipment containing pieces that are hard to replace, or a long-distance sea shipment. In other cases the decision is yours, and we set out the cost before you decide.

How do I add it to my request?

State the value of the goods when requesting a quote, and the insurance item will come in the written quote with its terms and cost.
