Move your yacht or boat by road between marinas in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar and Oman on a low-bed trailer and a cradle built to the hull. We survey the route, obtain the load permits, lift and launch with the marina’s lift, and record the yacht’s condition in photos at both ends.
Home Safe moves yachts and boats by road between the marinas of the Gulf states on low-bed trailers: lifting out of the water, securing on a cradle built to the hull, transport with its permits and escort, and launching at the destination marina. The time runs from a day between Dammam and Kuwait to 6 days between Jeddah and Dubai. To book: 0552803439.

Method: a low-bed trailer and a purpose-built cradle · Coverage: Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman · Time: 1 – 6 days.

In brief
- The service: lifting, securing, transport, clearance and launching.
- The limit: height under the bridges, then beam.
- Time: 1 – 3 days within the eastern Gulf, and 4 – 6 from the Red Sea to it.
- Permits: an abnormal load permit and escort for anything beyond the road’s limits.
- Customs: temporary admission for a visiting yacht, and 5% for one being registered.
- What we need: length, beam, height and weight, and the two marinas.
- Booking: 0552803439, by call or WhatsApp.
Why move a yacht by road?
There is no short sea route between the Kingdom’s west coast and the Arabian Gulf: a yacht sailing from Jeddah to Dubai goes round the peninsula for more than 2,500 nautical miles. By land they are about 2,000 km apart.
- Quicker: days instead of weeks under way.
- No engine hours: no wear on the engines, no fuel for a long passage, and no crew.
- No open-sea risk: especially for small and mid-sized yachts.
- To any marina: and on to maintenance yards and boat shows.
Which yachts can go by road?
| Craft | Method | Permits |
|---|---|---|
| Jet skis and boats up to 8 metres | On their trailer, or a flatbed truck | Mostly not needed |
| Boats and yachts of 8 – 12 metres | A low-bed trailer and cradle | By the beam |
| Yachts of 12 – 20 metres | An extended low-bed trailer | Abnormal load and escort |
| Yachts over 20 metres | Mostly by sea | — |
Height is the real limit. On the trailer the yacht has to pass under bridges, gantries and power lines, so we measure its height from the bottom of the keel to the highest fixed point, and decide what comes off.
Overland routes and their times
| Route | Approximate distance | Time on the road |
|---|---|---|
| Dammam or Khobar – Kuwait | 400 km | 1 – 2 days |
| Dammam – Doha | 400 km | 1 – 2 days |
| Dammam – Abu Dhabi and Dubai | 700 – 850 km | 2 – 3 days |
| Dubai – Muscat | 450 km | 1 – 2 days |
| Jeddah – Dammam | 1,350 km | 3 – 4 days |
| Jeddah – Dubai | 2,000 km | 4 – 6 days |
| Jeddah – Yanbu or NEOM | 330 – 1,000 km | 1 – 3 days |
An abnormal load travels at a limited speed and in permitted hours, so it takes longer than an ordinary truck. Add a day for lifting and preparation and a day for launching.
Cost of overland yacht transport
At Home Safe each yacht is priced on its dimensions and route. Send the length, beam, height and weight and the departure and arrival marinas to 0552803439, and you will have the price the same day.
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Dimensions and weight | They set the type of trailer, and whether the load is abnormal |
| Distance and number of borders | Each border means clearance and a permit |
| Permits and escort | For the wide and the tall |
| Lifting and launching | The marina’s travel lift, or a mobile crane where there is none |
| The cradle | Ready-made for a common size, or built to the hull |
| Removal and refitting | The mast, radar arch and flybridge |
| Insurance | A percentage of the yacht’s value |
Lifting out at the marina

- The lift: the marina’s travel lift with two wide slings, or a mobile crane with a spreader beam.
- Lifting points: the slings go at the marks the builder set on the hull, not just anywhere.
- Inspection: the hull, propellers and rudder are photographed as soon as they clear the water, and their condition recorded in a report.
- Washing: the underside is washed of marine growth, which some marinas and countries require.
Preparing and securing the yacht

- Emptying: fuel down to the minimum, and the water and waste tanks empty.
- Removal: the mast, antennas, radar and canopies, and anything over the height.
- Securing inside: everything loose is fixed down or taken out, and doors and hatches are locked and taped.
- Batteries: disconnected.
- The cradle: padded, and carrying the hull at the keel and the strong frames.
- Straps: wide, over protective pads, with no tension that distorts the hull.
- Covering: a tight cover or shrink-wrap, as the road is desert and sand scratches paint and glass.
Details are on the yacht shipping guide page.
Permits, escort and crossing borders
- Abnormal load: anything beyond the road’s legal width or height needs a permit from the roads authority in each country it crosses.
- Escort: one vehicle or more with warning lights, ahead of the truck and behind it.
- Travel times: some roads allow a wide load only in set hours.
- Route survey: we check the height of the bridges and tunnels on the road before setting off.
- Temporary admission: a registered yacht entering for a visit or for maintenance comes in with no duty for a set period.
- Import: a yacht being sold or registered in the other country bears 5% duty.
- Documents: the registration certificate, proof of ownership, the owner’s ID, and an authorisation if someone else is moving it.
The Gulf’s rules are in the article on shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Gulf states.
Launching at the destination marina

- Booking: the marina’s lift is booked before the truck arrives.
- Inspection: the hull is checked against the lifting report and its photos before launching.
- Refitting: the mast, radar and whatever came off go back, and the batteries are reconnected.
- Launching: on the same slings, with a check for leaks before the slings are released.
When does sea shipping suit better?
| Case | Best fit |
|---|---|
| A yacht that passes under the bridges, within the Gulf and the Kingdom | Road |
| A yacht beyond the road’s limits | By sea on a vessel’s deck, or sailing with a delivery crew |
| A destination outside the Gulf: the Mediterranean, Europe | By sea from Jeddah |
| Several small boats | Road, on a flatbed truck |
Sea shipping for yachts is on the yacht and boat shipping page.
Air freight for small craft and spare parts

What cannot wait goes by air within one to 5 days:
- Jet skis: on a pallet inside a timber frame, with the tank empty.
- Marine engines: outboard and inboard, drained of oil and fuel.
- Spare parts: when the yacht is laid up waiting for a part.
- Price: on chargeable weight; ask for it on 0552803439.
Details are in the article on the air freight office in Jeddah.

Frequently asked questions about overland yacht transport in the Gulf states
How much does moving a yacht by road between the Gulf states cost?
It is worked out from the yacht’s length, beam, height and weight, the distance, and the permits and escort it needs. Send the yacht’s dimensions and the departure and arrival marinas to 0552803439 and you will have the price the same day.
How long does moving a yacht by road take?
One to two days between Dammam and Kuwait or Qatar, two to 3 days between Dammam and Dubai, and 4 to 6 days between Jeddah and Dubai. Add a day for lifting out and a day for launching.
What is the largest yacht that can go by road?
Height limits it more than length: whatever passes under the bridges once the flybridge and masts are removed. In practice most yachts up to about 20 metres go by road, and anything larger ships by sea.
Does moving a yacht need permits?
Yes, if its beam or height exceeds the road’s limits: an abnormal load permit, an escort vehicle, and travel at set times. We obtain them before the date.
What is removed from the yacht before transport?
The mast, antennas and radar, the radar arch or flybridge if they exceed the height, and the canopies. They are wrapped and travel with it.
Should I empty the fuel and water tanks?
Yes. Fuel is brought down to the minimum, and the water and waste tanks are emptied. Excess weight is a risk on the trailer.
Are customs paid when the yacht crosses a border?
A registered yacht entering temporarily comes in under temporary admission with no duty. A yacht being sold or registered in the other country bears 5% duty.
Is the yacht insured during transport?
Transit insurance is optional and worked out as a percentage of the yacht’s value. We advise it, as a yacht’s marine policy mostly does not cover it on the road.
When does sea shipping suit better than road?
When the yacht exceeds the road’s limits, or the destination is outside the Gulf. Then it ships on a vessel’s deck, or sails with a delivery crew.
Do you move small boats and jet skis?
Yes, on their own trailers or on a flatbed truck, several on one trip.
