  • Booking: 0552803439, call or WhatsApp.

Who ships from Jeddah to Canada?

This is an immigration lane before it is a trade lane. Most of those who ship on it are families who have obtained permanent residence in Canada and are moving their home, students leaving to study, and Canadians going back after years of work in the Kingdom. Each has a different customs position.

Who What they ship Usual method Customs in Canada
New immigrant Furniture and household belongings Consolidated sea freight or a container Exempt with a list at first entry
Returning Canadian Belongings and furniture Sea Exempt after an absence of a year or more
Student Cartons and suitcases Air, or consolidated sea freight Personal effects that leave with them when their studies end
Sender of a parcel to a relative Gifts and personal items Air Exemption for a small gift, charges on anything above it
Trader Dates and goods Containers, with samples by air Duty by product, plus the federal tax

Route and transit time from Jeddah to Canada

The vessel leaves Jeddah, passes through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, and exits at Gibraltar to cross the Atlantic to Canada’s east coast. Vancouver on the west coast is served by another, longer route through Asia and the Pacific. So the choice of port follows your city in Canada.

Destination Sailing or flight time Door to door Serves
Halifax 20 – 26 days 35 – 45 days The Atlantic provinces
Montreal 22 – 30 days 38 – 50 days Quebec and Ontario: Toronto and Ottawa
Vancouver 35 – 45 days 45 – 55 days British Columbia and Alberta
Toronto by air A day, with a stop 5 – 8 days Urgent items and light belongings

In winter the St Lawrence River partly freezes, so some Montreal shipments are routed to Halifax and on by rail. We build that into the date.

Sea or air?

Comparison Sea Air
Transit 35 – 55 days 5 – 8 days
Pricing By volume: the cubic metre or the container By chargeable weight: the kilogram
Suits Furniture, many cartons and goods Suitcases, papers and what you need on arrival
Cost The most economical for large volumes The dearest, and reasonable for light items

Most immigrants combine the two: two or three cartons by air with winter clothes and papers, and the whole home by sea.

Cost of shipping from Jeddah to Canada

At Home Safe the price is calculated by the cubic metre for consolidated freight, by the container for a full load, and by the kilogram for air. Send your furniture list or carton count and your Canadian city to 0552803439, and you will have the price the same day.

What you ship Pricing unit Price
Belongings and goods by air Chargeable kilogram From SAR 32 a kilo
Small parcel by air The parcel From SAR 185
Furniture and cartons by sea Cubic metre Ask for it once the furniture list is in
20- or 40-foot container The container Ask for it by port and sailing date

What sets the price?

What sets the price Its effect
Volume Work it out with the CBM calculator
The port The east coast is cheaper and faster than Vancouver
Transport inside Canada Distances are vast: Toronto is about 1,800 km from Halifax
Packing and wooden crates A separate item, and necessary for a journey this long
Clearance and delivery to the address Stated explicitly in the price
Season Summer is the peak of immigration, and winter is slower for delivery

How to lower the cost

  1. Do not ship large appliances: they will not run on Canada’s electricity, and shipping them is money wasted.
  2. Sort before packing: cheap, heavy furniture is better sold here and bought there for less than its freight.
  3. Ship consolidated if your volume is under 15 cubic metres.
  4. Dismantle wardrobes and beds, and fill the drawers.
  5. Choose the port nearest your city, not the cheapest by sea.
  6. Time the arrival: a shipment that arrives before you pays storage.

Packing an immigrant’s furniture for a journey of more than a month

Packing immigrants’ furniture in Jeddah before shipping to Canada

A container to Canada spends more than a month between truck, port, vessel and train, and passes from the heat of the Red Sea to the cold of the Atlantic. What is enough for a move within a city will not survive it.

  • Wooden crates: for paintings, mirrors, screens and ornaments, in heat-treated wood.
  • Furniture: dismantled and wrapped in blankets and stretch film, with its corners protected.
  • Cartons: double-walled, numbered, each marked with its contents.
  • Moisture: absorbent bags inside the container, since the journey crosses very different climates.
  • The list in English or French: a line for every carton and piece, with an approximate value.
  • Cleanliness: wooden furniture, garden tools and shoes free of soil and insects.

Electricity in Canada is 120 volts: a fridge, washing machine, air conditioner or vacuum cleaner bought in the Kingdom will only work there on a large transformer, and none of them is worth shipping. Computers, phones and modern screens work on both voltages. Check the label on each appliance before you pack it.

How each kind of item is packed is on the packing guide page.

Immigrants’ belongings and the goods-to-follow list

The goods-to-follow list for immigrants to Canada

This is the most important part of the article for anyone immigrating. Canada exempts the new immigrant from duty on personal and household belongings, on two conditions:

  • Ownership and use: that you owned and used them before you arrived.
  • The list at first entry: you hand the border officer two lists: what is with you, and what will follow. The second is called “goods to follow”.

The officer stamps the list and gives you a copy. With that copy your shipment clears when it arrives weeks later, without duty.

The mistake that cannot be undone: whoever enters Canada without the goods-to-follow list loses the exemption on their shipment. Prepare the list before you travel, and we help you write it from the packing inventory.

How to write the list

  1. Start from the packing inventory: every carton with its number and contents.
  2. Group like with like: “clothes: 12 cartons”, “kitchenware: 6 cartons”.
  3. Single out valuables: jewellery, watches, electronics and paintings, each piece with its description, value and serial number if it has one.
  4. Write an approximate value for each line in Canadian dollars.
  5. Print two copies, and carry them in your hand luggage, not in the shipment.
  • The high-value piece: a single item has a value limit, with duty paid on anything above it. Declare valuables at their true value.
  • The returning Canadian: whoever has been away a year or more has an exemption on what they owned and used for at least six months.
  • New in its box: not covered by the exemption, and duty is paid on it.
  • Not for sale: what entered under the exemption stays with you for at least a year.

Clearance on arrival: who clears, and where?

A personal shipment is cleared in its owner’s name. When the container reaches the port or the city warehouse, you go to the customs office with your passport and your stamped copy of the list, the shipment is released, and it is then delivered to your home.

  • Your presence: usually required, once and for a few minutes.
  • What you carry: the passport, the permanent residence document or study permit, the stamped list, and the arrival notice.
  • Inspection: cartons may be opened, especially those holding food or wood. An accurate list shortens it.
  • After release: our agent delivers the shipment to your address and unloads it inside the home.

The paperwork is explained on the required documents page.

Can a car be shipped from Saudi Arabia to Canada?

In most cases, no. Canada does not accept a car under fifteen years old unless it was originally built to Canadian standards, and cars sold in the Kingdom are not. So a recent car is refused at the border. Anything over fifteen years old may enter, and that concerns classic cars. The destinations that do accept cars from the Kingdom are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia.

Shipping parcels and students’ belongings to Canada

A student needs a few cartons that arrive before term starts, and families send their children parcels in season. These go by air, door to door.

  • Price: a small parcel starts from SAR 185, and anything above it from SAR 32 a kilogram.
  • Gifts: a small gift from one individual to another is exempt, and tax is paid on anything above that.
  • The declaration: a description and value for each item, in English.
  • Dates: in sealed boxes and personal quantities, and listed on the declaration.
  • What not to include: meat and dairy, medicines without a prescription, seeds and plants.
  • The address: with the full Canadian postal code and a mobile number there.

The details are on the parcel shipping page and in the article on express international shipping.

Shipping commercial goods to Canada

  • The importer: a company or an individual with a Canadian business number and an import account.
  • Duty: by tariff heading, then the federal goods and services tax of 5%.
  • Food: subject to the Canadian food inspection agency: an import licence and a label in English and French.
  • The bilingual label: a requirement for all consumer products.
  • Pallets: treated wood bearing the ISPM 15 stamp.
  • Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading and certificate of origin.

The details are on the commercial shipping page.

What cannot be shipped to Canada, or needs a permit

Item Status
Meat, dairy, eggs and their products Prohibited
Dates and dry spices Personal quantities, declared
Plants, seeds and soil With a permit
Weapons and anything resembling them Strict rules, and never shipped among belongings
Medicines Personal-use quantities, with a prescription
Tobacco and alcohol Within narrow limits
Cash, gold and official papers Carried by hand, with cash above the limit declared

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Delivery in Canadian cities

Delivering immigrants’ furniture in Canada

Canada is the second-largest country in the world, with five thousand kilometres between its coasts. The container continues from the port to your city by rail and then by truck, and that is a large part of the transit time.

City Port Overland distance
Montreal Montreal Within the city
Ottawa Montreal About 200 km
Quebec City Montreal About 250 km
Toronto and Mississauga Montreal About 540 km
Halifax Halifax Within the city
Winnipeg Montreal or Vancouver, by rail About 2,300 km from either
Vancouver Vancouver Within the city
Calgary and Edmonton Vancouver 970 – 1,160 km

Delivery includes unloading into the home. In winter we set the date around road and snow conditions. Residential towers require the service lift to be booked with the building management days ahead. The destination details are on the shipping to Canada page.

Air freight from Jeddah to Canada

Air freight from Jeddah to Toronto

Air freight from King Abdulaziz Airport to Toronto Pearson delivers the shipment within 5 to 8 days, with a stop at a European or Gulf airport. It also reaches the airports of Montreal, Vancouver and Calgary.

  • For whom: what an immigrant needs in the first weeks: winter clothes, papers and the computer.
  • The practical way: two or three cartons by air, and the furniture by sea.
  • Pricing: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: from SAR 32 a kilogram, falling as the weight rises.
  • The list: what is flown after you also goes on the goods-to-follow list.

Its details are on the air freight page.

When should you ship your belongings?

  • After the visa: do not ship before it is issued.
  • Two to four weeks before you travel: so the shipment arrives after you have found permanent housing.
  • Not much earlier than that: a shipment that arrives before you waits in the warehouse on storage charges.
  • The delivery address: can be set after you arrive, before the vessel does.
  • If your housing is delayed: the shipment is stored with us before sailing, which costs less than storing it in Canada.

Collection from Jeddah and other Saudi cities

Collection city Sea freight Air freight
Jeddah, Makkah and Taif Direct from Jeddah port King Abdulaziz Airport
Madinah and Yanbu Moved to Jeddah within a day Jeddah airport
Riyadh and Qassim Moved to Jeddah within one to two days King Khalid Airport
Dammam and Khobar Moved to Jeddah within two to three days King Fahd Airport

Steps for shipping from Jeddah to Canada

  1. You send the list of what you are shipping, your Canadian city and your travel date.
  2. You receive the price with the method and transit time.
  3. Packing, numbering and inventory at your home.
  4. We write the goods-to-follow list with you from the inventory.
  5. Export clearance and shipping.
  6. You present the list when you enter and send us its stamped copy.
  7. Clearance and delivery to your address.

Insurance and tracking

  • Insurance: optional, a percentage of the shipment’s value. We recommend it here: the journey runs past a month, handling is repeated, and the carrier’s liability is limited.
  • The list of values: insurance is built on the value of each line, which is your own list.
  • Tracking: by container or bill of lading number on the track your shipment page.
  • Updates: at loading, sailing, arrival at the port, loading onto the train, and delivery.

The details are on the cargo insurance page.

  • Food inside the cartons: it is confiscated and delays the shipment.
  • Wooden furniture that is not clean: it is treated at your expense.
  • Shipping a recent car: it is refused at the border.
  • Shipping far too early: storage charges before you arrive.
  • Shipping the fridge and washing machine: they do not run on 120 volts.
  • Putting the list in the shipment instead of the hand luggage.
