Who ships a car from Kuwait to Morocco?

Not everyone who ships a car to Morocco imports it. Some bring it in for a few months and take it back, some return home with it for good, and some sell it there. The difference between these cases is no detail: it decides whether the car is accepted at all, how much you pay on it, and which papers you prepare. So we start with every customer with one question: what is your own situation?

Case What happens to the car in Morocco What follows
A Kuwaiti or resident spending the summer in Morocco It enters under temporary admission in their name No charges, and it must leave before the period ends
A Moroccan working in Kuwait visiting home It enters under temporary admission No charges, and it may not be sold or lent
A retired Moroccan returning for good, aged 60 or over Permanently imported with a 90% reduction Once in a lifetime, and a car up to 10 years old
A Moroccan returning for good below retirement age Permanently imported with its charges The 5-year age rule, and a reduction by the car’s age
A buyer or trader Permanently imported with full charges The 5-year age rule, approval and registration

If you do not find your case in the table, call us before you pay anything. The worst outcome on this route is for the car to reach the Moroccan port and then turn out not to be accepted, so you pay return freight on top of outbound freight.

Will Morocco accept your car? The five-year rule

Morocco does not allow the permanent import of a used car more than five years old. Age is counted from the date the car was first registered, not from the model year or the date you bought it. A 2022 model first registered at the end of 2021 is counted from 2021.

This rule concerns permanent import only, meaning a car that will carry Moroccan plates. A car that enters with its owner as a visitor and leaves with them is not judged on age so strictly, because it is not imported.

The car Permanent import Temporary admission for a visitor
5 years old or less Allowed with its charges Allowed
More than 5 years old Not allowed Allowed, and it leaves with its owner
Up to 10 years, for a returning retired Moroccan Allowed with a 90% reduction —
Right-hand drive Usually cannot be registered At customs’ discretion

Count the age on arrival, not on shipping: the voyage takes one to two months. A car one month short of five years may pass that mark while at sea. Send us a photo of the registration book and we work it out with you before booking.

Route and transit time from Kuwait to Morocco

Kuwait is on the Arabian Gulf and Morocco on the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, with one of the longest sea routes between two Arab countries in between: the Gulf, then the Arabian Sea, then the Red Sea, then the Suez Canal, then the whole Mediterranean. There is no regular direct car service between the two countries, so the car is either moved between two vessels at an intermediate port or cuts half the distance by road.

So we offer two routes. The first is all by sea from Shuwaikh or Shuaiba port. In the second, the car is loaded on a closed carrier from Kuwait to Jeddah, then sails from Jeddah Islamic Port, which is about two weeks’ sailing closer to Morocco. The second route is usually the faster.

Route Stages Time to the Moroccan port Suits
By road to Jeddah, then by sea Carrier 3–5 days, then 10–22 days’ sailing 22–35 days Those who want the shortest time
By sea from Kuwait in a container 28–40 days’ sailing with transshipment 38–55 days Those not in a hurry, and a car with belongings
By sea from Kuwait by RoRo According to car-carrier sailings 40–55 days A running car, and more than one car

What lengthens the time?

  • The sailing date: car carriers to Morocco are not daily, and the car may wait a week at the port.
  • Transshipment: waiting for the second vessel at the intermediate port adds days.
  • Export papers: the Kuwaiti export certificate is not issued while the car has a fine or a lien.
  • The summer season: between June and August vessels and Moroccan ports are crowded with returnees’ cars.
  • Clearance in Morocco: customs valuation and approval take days for a permanent import.

Cost of shipping a car from Kuwait to Morocco

Freight follows the size of the car above all, because a car carrier charges for the space the car takes, not its weight. Then come the route and the method: RoRo or container, and from Kuwait directly or via Jeddah. These are the starting prices of our service from your door in Kuwait to the Moroccan port:

The car Examples Price starts from
Sedan and hatchback Small and mid-size cars SAR 4,900, about KWD 400
Mid-size 4×4 Crossovers and family cars SAR 5,800, about KWD 475
Large 4×4 Large family cars and pickups SAR 6,900, about KWD 565
A luxury or classic car in a container A 20ft container for one car Priced the day you ask, by service
Two cars in a 40ft container The freight is split between the two cars Priced the day you ask, by service

These prices are for shipping alone. They do not include Moroccan customs charges or the costs of approval and registration there, which for a permanent import are several times the freight. That is why we give them a full section with a worked example.

What sets the price Its effect
The car’s size RoRo charges on length, width and height
The method RoRo is cheapest for one car; a container costs more and protects more
The route Via Jeddah is faster; direct from Kuwait saves the road leg
The Moroccan port Tangier Med is a shorter sailing than Casablanca
The car’s condition A non-runner needs a forklift and a container, and is usually not accepted on RoRo
The season Summer is dearer and slower
Insurance Optional, a percentage of the car’s value

How do you lower the cost?

  • Ship by RoRo if your car is ordinary and runs.
  • Share a 40ft container for two cars with a relative or colleague.
  • Book before June, or put it off until September if you can.
  • Settle your fines and release the lien before collection day; late papers mean storage charges.
  • Check the age rule first. A refused car pays freight twice: there and back.

RoRo or container?

Securing a car inside a container before shipping it to Morocco

On RoRo the car is driven up a ramp into a vessel built like a multi-storey car park, and lashed by its wheels to the deck. In a container the car is driven into a closed steel box, secured with straps on all four wheels and wooden chocks, then the door is sealed and not opened until Morocco.

RoRo is cheaper and simpler, but requires the car to run and to be completely empty. A container protects the car from salt and hands, allows belongings to ship with it, and takes a non-running car.

Comparison RoRo Container
Method The car is driven onto the vessel on its wheels Secured inside a closed container
Suits A running car or truck Two cars together, or a car with goods
Cost Cheapest for one car Split between two cars
Items inside the car Not allowed Possible with a list
A non-running car Usually not accepted Loaded with a forklift

Both methods are explained on the RoRo shipping and container car shipping pages.

Exporting a car from Kuwait

Exporting a car from Kuwait

A car does not leave Kuwait for abroad while still registered there. Its licence must first be cancelled for export at the General Traffic Department; this step is done by the owner or their agent, and we go through it with them and check the papers before they are submitted.

  1. Paying fines: the export transaction is not opened while the car or its owner has a traffic fine.
  2. Releasing the lien: if the car is financed, a letter from the bank or finance company confirming the instalments are paid is required.
  3. Applying to cancel the licence for export: submitted at the traffic department with the registration book and civil ID.
  4. Surrendering the plates: the Kuwaiti plates are handed in, and the car is given temporary export plates if it will move on its own wheels.
  5. The export certificate: issued in the owner’s name; it is the paper customs ask for in both countries.
  6. The customs declaration: we prepare it at the exit point, by land or sea.

If you are outside Kuwait at the time of shipping, an official power of attorney for someone to complete the transaction for you is enough. Paperwork details are on the required documents page.

Moroccan customs: what you pay on a permanent import

Moroccan customs do not calculate charges on your purchase invoice. They assess the car’s value from their own tables, starting from its value when new with a deduction for its age. They then apply the following duties and taxes to that assessed value:

Item Rate Calculated on
Import duty 17.5% The assessed value
Value added tax 20% The assessed value plus import duty
Parafiscal import tax A small rate The assessed value
Luxury tax An additional rate High-value cars only

An approximate example: a car assessed by customs at MAD 150,000.

Item Calculation Amount
Import duty 17.5% 150,000 × 17.5% MAD 26,250
VAT 20% (150,000 + 26,250) × 20% MAD 35,250
Total before small charges and approval 26,250 + 35,250 MAD 61,500

So charges come to about 41% of the assessed value in this example, and more for high-value cars. Rates are reviewed in the Finance Act every year, so we confirm what is in force before shipping. General clearance procedures are on the customs clearance page.

The retired Moroccan returning for good: the 90% reduction

Moroccans living abroad who return for good after retirement have a special facility on one car: a 90% reduction of its assessed value before charges are calculated. It is what our Moroccan customers in Kuwait ask about most, and its conditions are specific:

  • Age: 60 or over.
  • Time abroad: at least 10 years of actual residence.
  • Once only: one car in the beneficiary’s whole lifetime.
  • Type of car: a passenger car with nine seats or fewer. It does not cover motorcycles or utility vehicles.
  • The car’s age: accepted up to 10 years, as an exception to the five-year rule.
  • Value ceiling: the reduction applies to an assessed value of up to MAD 300,000; anything above carries its normal charges.
  • In person: the beneficiary applies at the customs office personally; a proxy is not accepted.

Someone who settled in Morocco earlier and wants to benefit later is not granted the reduction. So align the car’s shipping date with your final return, and prepare proof of your time in Kuwait: past residence permits, a certificate from your employer, and proof of retirement.

Temporary admission: the visitor’s car that returns with them

Many Kuwaitis and residents spend the summer in Morocco and prefer their own car to a rental. They do not import the car; they bring it in under temporary admission: the car is recorded against its owner’s passport on entry and stays free of charges for a set period in the year, usually six months for a non-resident visitor.

  • In the owner’s name: the car enters with its owner or someone holding an official power of attorney from them.
  • No sale and no lending: it may not be sold, or left for someone else to drive in your absence.
  • Leaving on time: overstaying exposes you to fines, and the car may be treated as smuggled.
  • Insurance: insurance valid in Morocco is required from the day it leaves the port.
  • The return: we book your return shipment to Kuwait before the period ends.

Anyone travelling with their car across several countries may need an international passage document. Details are on the Triptik carnet page.

Approval and registration in Morocco

A Gulf car is left-hand drive, and Morocco drives on the right like Kuwait, so nothing changes on the steering side. But a permanently imported car goes through stages before it carries Moroccan plates:

  1. Customs clearance: valuation, payment of charges and receipt of the clearance certificate.
  2. Individual approval: inspection of the car by the competent body to confirm conformity: chassis number, engine, lights and emissions.
  3. Technical inspection: at an approved centre.
  4. The registration card: registering the car in your name and receiving the plates.

Gulf cars are built for heat, and their specifications differ slightly from the European specifications used in Morocco. A small change to lights or instruments may be required. We tell you what is usual for your type of car before shipping.

Ports of arrival and delivery in Moroccan cities

Cars arriving at Tangier Med port

Morocco has two main ports receiving cars from the east. Tangier Med is on the Strait of Gibraltar, the first Moroccan port a vessel reaches after crossing the Mediterranean. Casablanca is on the Atlantic, closer to the capital and Marrakesh. Choosing the port by your city saves hundreds of kilometres.

City Most suitable port Road distance
Tangier and Tetouan Tangier Med Up to 50 km
Rabat and Kenitra Either, depending on the service 90–250 km
Casablanca and Mohammedia Casablanca In the city
Fez and Meknes Tangier Med or Casablanca About 300 km
Marrakesh Casablanca About 240 km
Agadir Casablanca About 460 km
Oujda and Nador Tangier Med About 550 km

After clearance you collect the car from the port yourself, or we move it on a carrier to your city. Destination details are on the shipping to Morocco page.

Preparing the car before shipping

The car is inspected and photographed at collection, and every remark is recorded in a report of which you receive a copy. Good preparation shortens that inspection and protects you in any claim.

  • Fuel: a quarter tank or less. A full tank is refused on RoRo.
  • Cleanliness: wash the outside and clean the inside, so any existing scratch shows in the photos.
  • Items: empty it completely for RoRo, including loose accessories.
  • Alarm: disable the alarm so the battery does not drain.
  • Keys: one set travels with the car; keep the second.
  • Mechanical condition: working brakes, a sound battery and inflated tyres, as the car is driven onto the vessel.

More advice is in the car shipping guide.

Air freight from Kuwait to Morocco

Air freight from Kuwait to Casablanca

Shipping a whole car by air is possible, but costs several times the sea rate, and is used only by the owner of a race car or a rare car with a date that cannot slip. What actually goes by air on this route is what precedes or follows the car:

  • Spare parts: a part not available in Morocco for a Gulf-specification car.
  • Original papers: the registration book and export certificate by express, to arrive before the vessel.
  • Urgent belongings: the suitcases a returnee needs before their container arrives.

Air freight to Mohammed V Airport in Casablanca arrives in 3 to 6 days and starts from SAR 28 per kg. Documents by express start from SAR 83. Details are on the air freight page.

Car shipping from Morocco to Kuwait

The route works in both directions. What we ship most from Morocco is visitors’ cars returning when temporary admission ends, and the cars of Moroccans moving to work in the Gulf. Kuwait has its own conditions for an incoming car: an age limit, conformity with Gulf specifications, and customs duty on any car whose duty has not already been paid in the Gulf. We go through them with you before the car is loaded at the Moroccan port.

  • Leaving items in a RoRo car.
  • Overstaying temporary admission on the assumption that no one will notice.
  • Sending someone else to apply for the retiree’s reduction, which requires you in person.

Frequently asked questions about car shipping from Kuwait to Morocco

How much does it cost to ship a car from Kuwait to Morocco?

A sedan starts from SAR 4,900, about KWD 400, a mid-size 4×4 from SAR 5,800, and a large one from SAR 6,900. The final price follows the type of car, the shipping method and the Moroccan port. Call 0552803439.

How long does shipping a car from Kuwait to Morocco take?

22 to 35 days if the car is trucked to Jeddah and sails from there, and 38 to 55 days if it sails from Kuwait directly, because the direct service goes through a transshipment port.

Does Morocco accept a car more than five years old?

Not for ordinary permanent import: the limit is five years from the date of first registration. The exceptions are a retired Moroccan returning for good, and a car entering under temporary admission with a visitor, which is not imported but leaves with them.

How much is customs on a car in Morocco?

17.5% import duty, 20% VAT and other small charges, all calculated on a value assessed by Moroccan customs, not on your invoice. Together they come to roughly 40% to 55% of the assessed value.

What are the conditions of the 90% reduction for Moroccans living abroad?

You must be 60 or older, have lived abroad for at least 10 years, and apply to customs in person. It is granted once in a lifetime, for one passenger car, on a value of up to MAD 300,000.

Can I bring my Kuwaiti car into Morocco for a holiday only?

Yes, under temporary admission. The car enters in your name free of charges for a set period in the year, then must leave Morocco before it ends. Overstaying exposes you to fines.

RoRo or container: which suits better?

RoRo is cheaper for an ordinary running car. A container suits a luxury or classic car, and anyone shipping two cars together or a car with belongings.

What papers are required from Kuwait?

The car’s registration book, clearance of traffic fines, the export certificate from the General Traffic Department after the plates are surrendered, a copy of the civil ID or passport, and a lien release letter if the car is financed.

Which Moroccan port is the car shipped to?

Tangier Med for the northern cities, and Casablanca for Rabat, Marrakesh and the centre. We choose by your city and the earliest vessel.

Can I put items inside the car?

Not on RoRo; the car ships empty. In a container, belongings can travel with it under a list of contents and are declared to Moroccan customs.

Can a Gulf car be registered in Morocco without modification?

Both countries are left-hand drive, so nothing changes on the steering side. But the car goes through individual approval and a technical inspection before the registration card, and small modifications may be required.

Do you ship luxury and classic cars?

Yes, in a closed container with wheel straps and a photo record. Insurance on them is calculated as a percentage of their declared value.

Is the car insured during shipping?

The sea carrier’s liability is limited. Comprehensive insurance is optional and calculated as a percentage of the car’s value, and we recommend it for any car of value.

Do you ship from Morocco to Kuwait?

Yes. We return a visitor’s car when the holiday ends, and ship the cars of Moroccans moving to work in Kuwait, through our agent at the Moroccan port.

When should I book?

At least three weeks ahead, and a month ahead of summer. The season of Moroccans returning and Gulf travellers heading to Morocco fills vessels between June and August.
