Who ships a car from Qatar to Spain?

We see four groups on this route. The first is Qatari families with a summer home on the Costa del Sol, in and around Marbella, who want their own car there for two or three months. The second is Spaniards who worked in Doha for some years, finished their contracts and went home with their cars. The third is students and employees moving to Madrid and Barcelona. The fourth is car enthusiasts who buy and sell between the two markets. Each group needs a different arrangement:

Car owner What they want The method we suggest Their paper in Qatar
A family spending the summer in Marbella or Málaga Their car for two months, then back A container sent two months before travel, or air Exit permit, plates stay on
A Spaniard returning home To bring the car in exempt with personal effects Private container, or a 40ft with the furniture Export certificate and export plates
A student or employee relocating An economy car at the lowest fare RoRo to Barcelona or Valencia Export certificate and export plates
An enthusiast or a showroom A sports or classic car that has been sold Single-car container or air Permanent export in the buyer’s name

Will Spain accept your car? The question that comes before the price

Spain sets no age limit on an imported car as some other countries do, but it draws a sharp line between a visiting car and one that will stay. The visitor enters on its Qatari plates with no duties and no conformity test, and leaves before its period ends. The one that stays pays a duty and two taxes or proves an exemption, then goes through approval to European specifications that can cost an old car more than it is worth. So we settle this with you before we talk about the ship.

Point of comparison Temporary entry for the summer Permanent import
Plates Qatari, as they are Handed in in Qatar; export plates issued
Qatari paper Vehicle exit permit Vehicle export certificate
Period The rule in force is six consecutive months in Spain at most Permanent
Duties and taxes Not collected as long as the car will leave 10%, 21% and registration tax, or the relocation exemption
Conformity and inspection Not required Individual approval and import inspection
Who drives it Its owner, not resident in the European Union, for private use Any driver after registration

Temporary entry carries conditions laid down by the Spanish tax agency: the use must be private, and the car may not be lent, hired out or transferred while it is there. The authorisation is requested within the customs declaration on arrival, and our partner at the port lodges it in your name because the car arrives shipped, not driven. The Qatari insurance policy is not valid in Europe, so frontier cover is bought before the car moves off the quay. Anyone continuing in it to countries outside the Union should see the carnet page. These rules are reviewed, so we confirm those in force before shipping.

What does a car shipping company from Qatar to Spain handle?

We say it as it is: Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah, and we own no yard and no office in Qatar. Shipments leaving Doha are carried out by Qatari freight and clearing agents we work with; they send the recovery truck, lodge the export declaration and hand the car to the port terminal. Our team manages the file: it chooses the method and the port, books, checks your papers and follows up with the clearing partner in Spain. You deal with one number. What the service includes:

  • Advance review: the model and year of the car and your plans in Spain, so that we fix the customs route before the price.
  • Collection: a truck from your house, tower or showroom to the agent’s yard, with a photo report.
  • Export: following up the traffic paper, and the Qatari customs declaration at Hamad Port or the airport.
  • Freight: a place on a RoRo vessel, a private or shared container, or a pallet on an aircraft.
  • Arrival: the temporary entry or import declaration, quay charges and release of the car.
  • Delivery: a carrier to your address, a check against the report, then the key.

Two pages give the wider picture: car shipping for the service as a whole, and car shipping from the Gulf states for what Doha shares with its neighbours.

Shipping cars by sea from Hamad Port in Qatar to Barcelona and Valencia

Hamad Port at Umm Al Houl, south of Doha, is Qatar’s maritime gateway, with a vehicle terminal and container terminals served by the global lines. The ship leaves the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, rounds the south of the Arabian Peninsula into the Red Sea, then passes through the Suez Canal and crosses the Mediterranean westwards to the Spanish coast. Arrival is at Barcelona or Valencia, the two ports with large car terminals and regular services with the East.

Shipping cars by sea from Hamad Port in Qatar to Barcelona and Valencia
Stage Place Approximate time What happens
Collection and report Your address in Qatar 1 day Inspection, photographs and transfer to the agent’s yard
Traffic paper and delivery to the port General Directorate of Traffic, then Hamad Port 3–6 days Permit or certificate, then Qatari export declaration
Sailing Hormuz, Red Sea, Suez, Mediterranean About 20–30 days Direct, or with a change of vessel at a hub port
Clearance Barcelona or Valencia 3–6 days Temporary entry, or duties and taxes, or exemption
Delivery From the quay to your city 1–3 days Car carrier, inspection and handover of the key

The sailing days in the table are an estimate, not a promise. Many voyages between the Gulf and the western Mediterranean call at a consolidation port where the car or the container moves to a second ship, and some lines change their routing according to shipping conditions at the time of booking. What is published for the opposite direction, from Valencia and Barcelona to Hamad Port, is around 22 to 23 days. So we fix the port and the date for you once we have seen the shipping line’s schedule for your week. The ports we work through are on the ports and gateways page.

Transit time for shipping a car from Qatar to Spain

The difference between the sea methods is not in the speed of the ship, since they all use the same sea, but in the wait before sailing. A private container takes the first container vessel after your papers are complete. A shared container waits for its partner. RoRo waits for a car carrier heading west, and those sail from the Gulf less often. So ask about the sailing date, not the number of days at sea.

Method Door to door What governs its date
RoRo to Barcelona or Valencia 32–45 days The car-carrier schedule from Hamad Port
Private 20ft container 30–42 days The nearest container vessel once the papers are ready
Half of a 40ft container 34–45 days, possibly more Arrival of the second car
Air freight to Madrid or Barcelona 4–8 days An aircraft that accepts the car’s dimensions

What lengthens the time?

  • A traffic fine that appears on the day the permit is requested, so the car misses its ship.
  • An export certificate issued too early that expires before the car enters the port.
  • Arrival in August, when Spanish offices are thinly staffed.
  • An incomplete exemption file, so the car stands on the quay and storage is charged.

Times for the other routes are on the transit times page.

Prices for shipping cars from Qatar to Spain, and payment methods

We do not print a fixed figure for a route on which we do not start from our own yard. The sea rate from Hamad Port is set by the shipping line week by week, and the Qatari agent’s fee follows the location of the car and the type of truck. What we do commit to is an itemised price that reaches you within a day of sending the car’s details: collection, export, sea or air, Spanish port charges and delivery. Government duties and taxes remain a separate item paid at their actual value.

Service Price Note
Saloon by RoRo from Hamad Port to the Spanish port Set on request According to the vessel available and the car’s dimensions
Private 20ft container for one car Set on request According to the line and the week of shipping
Half of a 40ft container Set on request The rate split between two cars
Collection inside Qatar Set on request According to the city and the type of truck
Clearance and delivery inside Spain Set on request According to the port and the distance to the city
Air freight for the car Set on request By weight, dimensions and engine type
For comparison: saloon by RoRo from Jeddah port to the Spanish port Starts from SAR 2,800, about QAR 2,720 Our line’s price from Saudi Arabia, a reference for the sea leg and not the price of this route

Prices circulating in the market: we found no one publishing a specific tariff from Doha to the Spanish ports. What circulates for sea freight of an ordinary car is USD 1,800 to 3,500, and for air freight USD 2,500 to 6,000. For the opposite direction, from Spain to Hamad Port, USD 1,875 to 3,590 is published, with local charges on arrival of USD 1,500 to 2,500. International guides quote USD 8,000 to 15,000 for air freight of a complete car, so the low air figure in circulation does not cover a car on a cargo aircraft. And anyone quoting a sea price should be asked: to the quay or to the house?

Factor How it changes the price
Size of the car RoRo is charged per cubic metre, so a tall car pays more than a saloon
Method Air at the top, then the private container, then the half container and RoRo
Arrival port A port the ship reaches direct costs less than one that needs a change of vessel
Spanish city Barcelona and Valencia need no long carrier trip; Málaga and Seville are the furthest
Season May and June are the peak for summer cars from the Gulf
Outward and return Booking both directions in one contract brings down the price of each

How do you cut the cost?

  • Send the car by sea two months before you travel instead of flying it in the last week.
  • Share a 40ft container with a neighbour or relative spending the summer in the same area.
  • Bring the car to the agent’s yard yourself if you are in Doha.
  • Choose the port nearest your home in Spain, then compare the total, not the sea rate.

Payment methods: bank transfer or bank card, normally in two instalments: the first on confirmation of the booking and the second before the car is delivered in Spain. The invoice is issued in the name of the Home Safe establishment and itemises every charge. What goes into pricing is explained on the pricing factors page.

Collecting cars from Doha and the cities of Qatar

The furthest inhabited point in Qatar from Hamad Port is no more than two hours by road, so collection time hardly differs between one city and another. The difference lies in how the car is reached: towers with basement parking that a truck cannot enter, compounds with security gates, and villas with wide entrances. The agent’s driver calls you before the appointment and brings the report form with him.

Area Examples What we coordinate
Coastal Doha and Lusail The Pearl, West Bay, Dafna, Lusail Bringing the car out of basement parking with the tower management’s permission
Central Doha Al Sadd, Musheireb, Najma, Al Hilal An appointment outside rush hours
Al Rayyan and around Al Rayyan, Al Gharrafa, Al Waab, Education City Collection straight from the front of the villa
Al Wakrah and the south Al Wakrah, Al Wukair, Mesaieed The cities closest to Hamad Port
Al Khor and the north Al Khor, Al Thakhira, Al Shamal, Dukhan to the west The appointment is set a day ahead

RoRo or inside a container: which method for your car?

A RoRo vessel is built for cars alone. The terminal driver takes the car up the ship’s ramp, and it stands on a roofed deck lashed by its wheels to the floor, as it is, with no cover and no wrapping, because a cover tears and scratches the paint as air moves through the hold. A container is a box closed on the car in Doha, where it is secured with straps over the tyres and chocks in front of and behind them, and its door carries a seal with a number written into the bill of lading.

Point of comparison RoRo Private 20ft container Half of a 40ft container
Loading Driven onto the ship Secured and sealed in the yard Secured beside a second car
Non-running car Not accepted Accepted, by winch Accepted, by winch
Belongings with the car Not allowed Allowed with a list and a declaration Within narrow limits
Fare Usually the lowest The highest by sea In between
For whom Running saloons and family cars Luxury, low-slung and classic cars Two families or friends bound for one destination

Each method is described in detail on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.

Saloons, 4x4s and sports cars: the vehicle types we ship

The type of car decides two things: how it is shipped, and what awaits it in Spain. A 4×4 with an eight-cylinder engine, common in Qatar, falls in the top band of the Spanish registration tax if it is imported permanently. A low sports car does not suit a RoRo ramp. That is why we ask about the model and the engine before suggesting anything.

Vehicle Usual method What to watch on this route
Saloon and hatchback RoRo or half container The cheapest cars for conformity and tax
Large 4×4 RoRo or high-cube container Height with the roof rack, and the emissions band
Sports and luxury Single-car container or air Ground clearance, and insurance at an agreed value
Classic Private container One over thirty years old has a registration of its own for historic vehicles
Electric and hybrid Sea, after the line’s approval The battery charge level the carrier requires
Motorcycle Wooden crate in a container or by air Its customs duty is lower than a car’s

Car inspection and photo report before loading in Doha for shipping from Qatar to Spain

Between your parking space in Doha and your door in Spain the car passes through at least six pairs of hands. The photo report is what makes each of them answerable for its own stage. The agent’s representative draws it up in front of you before the car goes onto the truck, you both sign it, and your copy reaches you that same minute.

Car inspection and photo report before loading in Doha for shipping from Qatar to Spain

What the report records: the body from all four sides and the corners, the roof and bonnet, the wheels and tyres, the glass and mirrors, the seats and dashboard, the odometer reading and fuel level, the chassis number, and every old scratch or dent marked on a diagram of the car. Before the representative arrives, prepare the car as follows:

  • Wash it thoroughly, as dust hides scratches and weakens the value of the photographs.
  • Empty it of personal items, gate cards and toll devices.
  • Keep the fuel at a quarter of a tank or below.
  • Check the battery and tyre pressures, since a RoRo car must start at the first attempt.
  • Switch off the alarm, and hand over one key while keeping the second.

The rest of the preparation is in the car shipping guide.

Exit and export procedures for a car leaving Qatar

Everything to do with a vehicle leaving the country goes through the General Directorate of Traffic at the Ministry of Interior. Some transactions are available in the Metrash app and on the ministry’s website, and some need a visit to the section. The Ministry of Interior requires fines to be settled before any exit. What is in the table is the practice in force, and we confirm what applies on the day you apply because the online services are updated.

Step Summer car Car exported permanently
Fines Paid in full Paid in full
Finance No-objection letter from the bank Lien lifted from the record
Paper Vehicle exit permit in the name of the owner or an authorised person Vehicle export certificate
Plates Stay on Originals handed in; export plates issued
Period Return within six months; extension on request Short validity, requested once the ship is fixed
Customs Temporary exit declaration at Hamad Port Permanent export declaration

One point concerns new cars: under a circular from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the practice in force is that dealerships and showrooms do not export a new car before a year has passed since its registration. If your car was bought recently, we check with you whether that applies to it.

Documents for shipping a car from Qatar to Spain

The papers are written in two countries in two languages. Anything issued in Arabic only is translated, and what is submitted to Spanish authorities is put into Spanish by a sworn translator for a permanent import. We check the copies first, then the originals travel with their owner or by express courier, and are never left in the glovebox.

Document Source Where it is required
Vehicle registration card Qatari traffic department Booking and both customs offices
Exit permit or export certificate General Directorate of Traffic Hamad Port or Hamad International Airport
ID card and passport Owner Every stage
Purchase invoice or valuation of the car Seller or valuer Spanish customs and insurance
Foreigner’s identification number and a registered address in Spain The police and the town hall there Permanent import and registration
Certificate of end of residence from the Spanish consulate Embassy of Spain in Doha Application for the change-of-residence exemption
Bank letter Lender Qatari traffic department
Bill of lading and power of attorney for the broker Shipping line and owner Release of the car in Spain

The document list for every kind of shipment is on the shipping documents page.

Spanish customs and taxes on a car arriving from Qatar

Qatar is outside the European Union, so its car is treated at the Spanish port under the Union tariff first and then under Spain’s taxes. The base on which they are charged is the value of the car plus freight and insurance, and customs may apply the value in its own tables if it finds the invoice below the market.

Item Rule in force When it is paid
Customs duty 10% for cars At the port before the car is released
Value added tax 21% on the value and the duty together At the port
Registration tax up to 120 g/km Zero Before the plates
Registration tax 121–159 g/km 4.75% Before the plates
Registration tax 160–199 g/km 9.75% Before the plates
Registration tax 200 g/km and above 14.75% Before the plates
Municipal road tax Annual, and differs between municipalities After registration

An example in Qatari riyals: a car worth QAR 100,000 including freight and insurance. Customs duty is QAR 10,000, and value added tax on 110,000 comes to QAR 23,100, so QAR 33,100 is paid at the port. If its engine is in the top band, about QAR 14,750 of registration tax is added. In other words, a permanent import without an exemption approaches half the value of the car, which is what makes the exemption question more important than the freight question. Some regions adjust the registration bands, so we confirm what applies to your car before shipping. Clearance is explained on the customs clearance page.

Change-of-residence exemption for those returning or relocating to Spain

A Spaniard returning from Doha, and a Qatari or resident who transfers their normal home to Spain, may each bring their car in with their personal effects free of customs duty, value added tax and registration tax, if they meet the conditions. These are conditions checked on paper, not on a say-so:

  • A year outside the Union: at least twelve consecutive months of residence, proved by the Qatari residence permit and the consular certificate.
  • Six months of ownership: the car registered in your name and used for six months before the move, so a car bought for export does not qualify.
  • A year to bring it in: the car arrives within twelve months of the date of the move.
  • A year without disposal: no sale, hire or loan for twelve months after entry.
  • Sixty days for the plates: the practice is that the request for Spanish plates goes in before sixty days have passed since the car was first used there.

The certificate of end of residence is obtained from the consulate while its holder is still in Qatar, and it is the paper travellers forget most often. We remind you of it in the first call, and we go through the conditions in force with you because their application changes.

Approval, inspection and registration of a Gulf-specification car in Spain

A car sold on the Qatari market is built to the Gulf Cooperation Council specification, not the European one, even if it comes from a German factory. So it does not carry the certificate of conformity that registration in Spain asks for, and an individual approval takes its place. The steering wheel is on the left in both countries and the speedometer is in kilometres, so the two biggest obstacles found elsewhere do not exist here. The rest is procedure:

Stage What happens What concerns a Gulf car
Individual approval An accredited laboratory reviews the car and issues its report Proving the emissions standard is its hardest item and may need a measurement
Modifications Rear fog lamp, tyres and glass with a European mark, headlamp adjustment Dark tinting on the windscreen and front windows is removed
Reduced technical sheet Drawn up by an engineer with the car’s data Built on the laboratory report
Import inspection The technical inspection station issues the Spanish inspection card Its appointment is booked in advance
Temporary green plates The car runs on them during the process Sixty days under the rule in force
Registration The traffic authority, after the taxes or the exemption It needs the foreigner’s identification number and proof of address

A note for anyone living in Madrid or Barcelona: both cities have low-emission zones where entry is governed by an environmental sticker granted according to the car’s emissions standard. So a large car may arrive and still not enter the city centre, and we say so before shipping, not after.

What is not accepted for shipping with the car

Three parties say no: the Qatari traffic department to a car with an obligation on it, the shipping line or airline to whatever breaches safety, and Spanish customs to whatever European Union rules prohibit. Knowing this before the truck arrives is cheaper than finding out at the port.

Case Ruling
Outstanding fines or lien The car does not leave until they are settled
Belongings in a RoRo car Emptied, or the car is moved to a container
Meat, dairy products and food Taken out; they are banned in luggage entering the Union
Fuel, oil and gas containers Removed; refused by sea and by air
Visible leak from the engine Repaired before handover
Weapons, ammunition and prohibited substances Strictly forbidden

The full list is on the prohibited items page.

Insuring and tracking the car from Hamad Port to the Spanish quay

The car’s Qatari insurance ceases to have effect at the borders written into it, and the sea carrier compensates only within small limits set out in the bill of lading. What protects the value of the car is a transit policy written for it specifically, starting from the moment the report is signed in Doha.

  • Cover: total loss and partial damage during loading, at sea and during unloading, at the agreed value of the car.
  • Sea tracking: the container or bill of lading number on the line’s website, and a message on entry to Hamad Port, sailing, transit of Suez and arrival.
  • After arrival: a message at customs release and when the carrier is loaded, then a call from the driver before delivery.
  • Claim: the remark is written on the delivery note itself with photographs, before the car moves.

Policy types are on the cargo insurance page, and follow-up on the shipment tracking page.

Delivering cars from Qatar in Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga

Three cities receive most of the cars on this route, and each is reached by its own road. Barcelona has its port inside it, so the distance from the quay to the house is a matter of minutes. Madrid is in the heart of the country, and the nearest port to it is Valencia. Málaga, with Marbella and Puerto Banús, is in the far south, so a RoRo car comes down on a carrier from Valencia, while a container may be routed to nearby Algeciras. In every case you check the car against the Doha report and then take the key.

Delivering cars from Qatar in Madrid, Barcelona and Málaga
City Usual port Approximate road distance Note
Madrid Valencia About 360 km Its centre is a low-emission zone
Barcelona Barcelona Within the city Collection from the car terminal is possible
Málaga and Marbella Valencia, or Algeciras for containers About 620 km, or 80–135 km Coastal compounds have gates, so entry is coordinated
Valencia Valencia Within the city Delivery on the day of release or the day after
Seville Algeciras or Valencia About 190 km, or 650 km The carrier does not enter the historic quarter

For the Balearic Islands a ferry from Barcelona or Valencia is booked for the car after release. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla are outside the European value added tax area and have their own local tax, so state your destination precisely in the first message. Delivery to the address is explained on the door to door page.

Shipping cars for individuals, companies, embassies and government bodies

An individual asks: when does my car arrive and how much do I pay? A company asks: how are ten cars invoiced and delivered in one week? An embassy asks about the exemption note. The route is one and the file differs:

  • Individuals: a plan built on your holiday or relocation date, a review of the exemption, and payment in two stages.
  • Companies and showrooms: a contract, a tax invoice and a chassis list, with 40ft containers to lower the cost per car.
  • Embassies and consulates: cars of the mission and its members are cleared under their privilege after approval by the Spanish foreign ministry, and we arrange the shipment around the date of the note.
  • Government bodies and delegations: a delegation’s car or an exhibition stand vehicle travels to the date of the event, so we count the shipment back from opening day and book its return with it.

Can a car be moved by road from Qatar to Spain?

We do not offer that. The overland route runs through Saudi Arabia, then Jordan or Iraq, Turkey, the Balkans and France, which is more than seven thousand kilometres and many borders, and commercial car carriers do not use it. Road transport in this service is its two ends only: the truck inside Qatar and the carrier inside Spain. Between them lies the sea from Hamad Port or the air from Hamad International Airport. The methods are compared on the shipping methods comparison page.

Air freight for cars from Qatar to Spain

An aircraft shortens a month and a half to a week. The car enters the cargo area at Hamad International Airport, is strapped by its tyres to a metal pallet and is lifted into a freighter or into the hold of a wide-body aircraft. Under present schedules there are regular cargo flights between Doha and both Madrid and Barcelona, along with Zaragoza and Málaga, so the car is delivered in Madrid and Barcelona or carried from the airport to your city on an enclosed carrier. From collection to delivery takes 4 to 8 days.

Air freight for cars from Qatar to Spain
  • For whom: for luxury and urgent cars: an expensive sports car, a car wanted on the first days of the holiday, or an exhibition car with an opening date.
  • Dangerous goods: aviation rules treat a vehicle with fuel and a battery as dangerous goods, so a declaration is prepared for it by a certified specialist.
  • Preparation: fuel at no more than a quarter of a tank under the rule in force, battery terminals protected, and the carrier’s conditions for an electric car.
  • Acceptance: the aircraft door and the height of its hold decide what is taken, and a low car is easier than a tall 4×4.
  • Papers: the same traffic paper, an air waybill, and a declaration at the arrival airport.
  • Price: set on request by weight and dimensions, and several times the sea fare.

We confirm the space on a specific flight before the car leaves your home, since not every aircraft carries a car. Air shipping of parcels and luggage is on the air freight page.

Steps for shipping your car from Qatar to Spain

Eight steps, two of them yours and the rest ours and our agents’:

  1. Send a photo of the registration card, the model, the Spanish city and your travel date to 0552803439, and say whether the car will be coming back.
  2. You receive from us the suitable customs route, the suggested method, the itemised price and the time.
  3. You pay the fines and prepare the bank letter if there is finance, and we follow up the exit permit or export certificate with you.
  4. The agent’s representative arrives, the photo report is drawn up, and the car is taken to the yard.
  5. It is handed to the RoRo terminal or secured in the container or on the aircraft pallet, and the Qatari declaration is lodged.
  6. The ship sails or the aircraft takes off, and you receive the bill of lading and the tracking number.
  7. Our partner lodges the declaration in Barcelona, Valencia or at the airport, and the charges are paid or temporary entry is established.
  8. The carrier reaches your address, you check the car against the report, sign and take the key.

Shipping cars from Spain to Qatar

The route works in reverse as well, and there are two cases. A returning summer car is shipped from Barcelona or Valencia to Hamad Port and enters on its plates without an import, provided it arrives before the permit period ends. A car bought in Spain is subject to Qatari import conditions: under the rules in force a light vehicle may be no more than five years old from manufacture, customs duty is 5% of its value including freight and insurance, the steering wheel must be on the left, and a technical inspection comes before registration. The sailing time published for this direction is 22 to 30 days. Ask us before you buy, and we will confirm the conditions in force at the time.

Tips before shipping a car from Qatar to Spain

  • Start with the customs question, not the price question: temporary or permanent? Exempt or not?
  • Do not buy a car in order to ship it exempt, as the six-month condition is checked against the date on the registration card.
  • Ask the dealership for a paper showing your car’s emissions standard before a permanent shipment, as it saves a laboratory measurement.
  • Carry your Qatari driving licence with an international permit, and keep the frontier insurance policy in the car.
  • Write the expiry date of the exit permit in your calendar, and book the return two months before it.

Common mistakes in shipping cars from Qatar to Spain

  • Issuing an export certificate for a car that will return after the summer, so it loses its plates for nothing.
  • Comparing a price to the quay with a price to the house as if they were the same.
  • Believing an air price equal to the sea price, when it is really the price of a parcel, not a car.
  • Covering a RoRo car with a fabric cover, which comes back with the scratches it caused.
  • Travelling without the consular certificate and then applying for the exemption from Spain.
  • Leaving the temporary car with a relative resident in Spain to drive, which forfeits its temporary status.
  • Booking arrival for mid-August without allowing for the office holidays.

Frequently asked questions about shipping cars from Qatar to Spain

Which is the best car shipping company from Qatar to Spain?

The one that asks about your plans in Spain first and prices second. A summer car has a different Qatari paper and a different customs treatment from the car of someone moving to live in Madrid. Home Safe is an establishment registered in Jeddah that runs the route through agents in Doha who collect the car and take it into Hamad Port, and a clearing partner at the Spanish port, and it stays with you on 0552803439 from the first photo of the registration card to the handover of the key.

What is the cheapest way to ship a car from Qatar to Spain?

By sea, and within sea freight RoRo for an ordinary running car, or half of a 40ft container split between two owners heading for the same port. Collecting from the quay in Barcelona or Valencia saves the carrier fare inside Spain for anyone who lives near the port. Air costs several times as much and is only chosen for the sake of time or the value of the car.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Qatar to Spain?

The price is set on request, because vessel rates from Hamad Port to the western Mediterranean change from month to month. What circulates for sea freight is USD 1,800 to 3,500 for an ordinary car, and for air freight USD 2,500 to 6,000, and these are figures to the port or airport, not to the house. For comparison, RoRo on our line from Jeddah port to the Spanish port starts from SAR 2,800.

How long does it take to ship a car from Doha to Madrid or Barcelona?

By sea, 30 to 45 days between collection from your home in Qatar and unloading in front of your address, of which about three to four weeks are at sea. By air, 4 to 8 days including clearance at both airports. The time we commit to is the one written in the booking confirmation once we have seen the schedule of the ship or the aircraft.

Do I need an export certificate if I am spending the summer in Marbella and coming back?

No. A summer car leaves on a vehicle exit permit from the Qatari traffic department and keeps its plates on. The rule in force is that it returns within six months of leaving, with an extension available on request. In Spain it enters under temporary importation, free of duties, for a maximum of six consecutive months. The export certificate and its plates are for a car that will not be coming back.

How do I obtain an export certificate for my car from the Qatari traffic department?

The application goes to the General Directorate of Traffic, through the Metrash app and the Ministry of Interior website or by visiting one of its sections, depending on what is available on the day you apply. Fines are paid and the lien is lifted, then the original plates are handed in and export plates are issued with the certificate. Because its validity is limited, we ask you to leave it until the sailing date has been fixed.

How much is customs on a car entering Spain from Qatar?

For a permanent import the rules in force are 10% customs duty, then 21% value added tax on the value of the car with its freight and insurance, followed by a registration tax of between zero and 14.75% according to the engine’s emissions. Anyone transferring their residence under the conditions is exempt from all three. A summer car entering temporarily pays nothing as long as it leaves within its period.

Can a Gulf-specification car be registered in Spain?

Yes, but after an individual approval at an accredited laboratory, because cars built for the Gulf market do not carry the European certificate of conformity. Emissions, lights, tyres and glass are reviewed, then an engineer draws up its technical sheet and it goes through the import inspection. The process can take from a few weeks to three months, so allow for it before you decide on a permanent shipment.

RoRo or container from Hamad Port: which should I choose?

RoRo for a running family car that needs the lowest fare; it is driven onto the ship uncovered, with no wrapping. A container for a luxury, low-slung or non-running car, and for anyone who wants to ship declared belongings with it. Before you choose we tell you which of the two has a sailing close to your week, since the RoRo schedule from the Gulf to the western Mediterranean is less frequent than container services.

Can a car be shipped by air from Hamad International Airport to Spain?

Yes. The car is loaded on a cargo pallet at Hamad International Airport and arrives at Madrid or Barcelona airport, and it is delivered after release within 4 to 8 days of collection. The service is for luxury and sports cars and for anyone with a date that cannot slip, and its price is set on request once the weight, dimensions and engine type are known.

What does the photo report before loading contain?

Dated photographs of the body from all four sides and the corners, the roof, the wheels, the cabin, the odometer and the chassis number, a diagram on which existing scratches are marked, and your signature with that of the person collecting in Doha. A copy reaches you on WhatsApp before the car leaves the neighbourhood, and the car is checked against it on the day of delivery in Spain.

Can I put suitcases or belongings inside the car?

Not on RoRo, since the car is opened and driven at more than one port and nothing inside it is guaranteed. In a private container, belongings may travel beside it with a detailed list submitted to Spanish customs. Food, meat and dairy products are taken out in every case, as European Union rules ban them in luggage arriving from outside it.

My car is financed by a bank in Qatar. Can it travel?

Only with the bank’s consent. The lien is recorded against the car in the traffic register, so no export certificate is issued before it is lifted, and a no-objection letter from the lender is normally required for a temporary exit. Ask for the letter two weeks before booking, as some banks take time to issue it.

Do you bring the car back from Spain to Qatar when the summer ends?

Yes. We book the return with the outward trip, so the car is collected from your address in Spain and shipped from Barcelona or Valencia to Hamad Port, or by air to Doha. It returns to its record on the same plates without an import, provided it enters Qatar before the exit permit or its extension runs out.

When should I book so that the car is in Spain at the start of the holiday?

For sea freight, about eight weeks before your arrival date: five or six for the voyage and clearance, and the rest for paperwork and a margin for the ship. For air freight, two to three weeks ahead. Anyone travelling in July should remember that August is the holiday month in Spain, and a car arriving in the middle of it waits for a broker to come back from leave.
