Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Spain, and what do they ship?

Spain is a destination for residence, study, property ownership and sailing. Each has its own shipment and method.

Shipper What they ship Most suitable method
A family moving its residence Home furniture, appliances and belongings Full container or part load with the change-of-residence exemption
The owner of a home on the Spanish coast Furniture, antiques and carpets to furnish it A part load to Algeciras or Valencia
A student Cartons of clothes and books Shared boxes by sea, and an urgent carton by air
A car owner An ordinary, luxury or classic car RoRo for a running car, a container for a luxury one
A yacht owner A yacht or boat for the Mediterranean season On a cradle on the vessel’s deck
A trader or exporter Dates, petrochemicals and Saudi products Container to Valencia or Barcelona, and air for samples

Route and transit time from Saudi Arabia to Spain

Spain’s main ports are on the Mediterranean, and the vessel reaches them after the Suez Canal without sailing round the continent. Choosing the port by your city saves hundreds of kilometres by road.

Port or airport Sailing or flight time Door to door Serves
Valencia 9–13 days 20–30 days Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Murcia
Barcelona 10–14 days 22–32 days Catalonia, Zaragoza, the north
Algeciras 10–14 days 22–32 days Málaga, Seville, Córdoba, Granada
Air to Madrid Hours 3–6 days Urgent and light belongings

Spain is on the Mediterranean, so the vessel does not sail round the continent as it does for northern ports. That makes it one of the fastest and cheapest European destinations from Jeddah.

What lengthens the time?

  • Waiting for consolidation: a part load waits for the shared container to fill.
  • The end-of-residence certificate: anyone who travels without it has their belongings held up at clearance.
  • Missing paperwork: a list not in Spanish, or municipal registration not yet done.
  • The islands: the Balearics and the Canaries need a second sea leg.
  • Customs inspection: adds days if the container is selected for examination.
  • Holidays: August is a holiday month in Spain, and work is slower.

Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Spain

The price is set by the method, the volume and the city. These are the starting prices of our services, and you receive your shipment’s price the same day if you send its details to 0552803439.

Service Price starts from
Sedan by sea SAR 2,800
Furniture and belongings, part load by sea SAR 5,500
Full home furniture container SAR 11,000
Air freight per kg SAR 23
Express parcel up to 5 kg SAR 110
Express documents up to 1 kg SAR 83
What sets the price Its effect
The port The one nearest your city saves hundreds of kilometres by road
Volume or weight Work it out with the CBM calculator
Inland transport It is a large country: Madrid is 360 km from Valencia
The islands The Balearics and the Canaries need an extra sea leg
Insurance Optional, a percentage of the value

How do you lower the cost?

  • Ship to the port nearest your city, not the best-known one.
  • Dismantle beds, tables and wardrobes; volume is what you pay for.
  • Do not ship large old appliances; they cost less there than their freight.
  • Request the end-of-residence certificate before you travel; it is what exempts you from the 21%.
  • Book before summer, the season for movers and yachts alike.

Sea freight to Spain: full container or part load?

Sea freight is the basis for anything large. The first question is whether you fill a container or share one.

Comparison Part load 20ft container 40ft container
Suitable volume Up to 15 m³ 15–28 m³ 30–60 m³
Suits A student’s belongings, one or two rooms A two- to three-room flat A villa, or furniture with a car
Charged Per cubic metre A price per container A price per container
Time Longer because of consolidation Shorter Shorter
Handling Moved between two warehouses Sealed at your home and opened at the consignee’s Sealed at your home and opened at the consignee’s

If your volume is close to 15 cubic metres, compare both prices; a full container may be cheaper and safer. Container dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the method is detailed on the sea freight page.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Spain

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Spain

Freight for a car to Spain is among the lowest to Europe because its ports are close. But the full sum includes duty, VAT, registration tax and conformity.

  • Method: a container to Valencia or Barcelona, or RoRo for a running car.
  • Charges: 10% customs duty on the value of the car and its freight, then 21% VAT on the total.
  • Registration tax: paid at first registration and calculated on emissions, from exemption for clean cars to about 15% for large engines.
  • Conformity: a Gulf-specification car needs individual approval and then a technical inspection, and may need changes to lighting and emissions.
  • Foreigner’s identification number: required to register the car in your name.
  • Classic cars: those over 30 years old and in original condition have historic registration and reduced charges.

A worked example: a car worth SAR 60,000 with freight of SAR 2,800.

Item Calculation Amount
Value with freight 60,000 + 2,800 SAR 62,800
Customs duty 10% 62,800 × 10% SAR 6,280
VAT 21% (62,800 + 6,280) × 21% SAR 14,507
Total before registration tax and conformity 6,280 + 14,507 SAR 20,787

Do the sums before you ship: a large-engined car carries a registration tax that may reach 15% of its value. We work it out with you before booking.

The general conditions are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the two methods on the RoRo shipping and container car shipping pages.

Yacht shipping to Spain

Yacht shipping from Saudi Arabia to Spain

The coasts of Spain and the Balearic Islands are among the Mediterranean’s busiest yacht destinations, and the marinas of Palma, Barcelona, Valencia and Marbella receive yachts from the Gulf and the Red Sea every season.

  • Method: on a cradle built to the hull, on the vessel’s deck or on a flat rack.
  • Lifting: by the port crane or the marina’s travel lift, with wide slings at the lifting points.
  • Tax: VAT is paid on a yacht that stays in European Union waters; for a temporary visit there is a temporary admission regime with a set period.
  • Timing: ship in April or May to catch the season.

A yacht’s price is not given as a general figure; it follows the length, beam, weight and height on the cradle. Send the dimension drawing to 0552803439 and you receive the price. Details are on the yacht and boat shipping page.

Movers’ furniture and the change-of-residence exemption

Anyone moving their residence to Spain brings in their furniture and belongings free of duty and tax, on conditions:

  • Previous residence: at least 12 months outside the European Union.
  • Ownership and use: 6 months before the move.
  • Time limit: belongings are brought in within 12 months of the move.
  • No sale: for 12 months after entry.
  • End-of-residence certificate: issued by the Spanish consulate in the Kingdom before travel, proving you have ended your previous residence. Request it before shipping.
  • Municipal registration: registering your new home with the city’s town hall.
  • The list: detailed, in Spanish, with an approximate value for each item.

Before travel, not after: the end-of-residence certificate is requested from the consulate while you are still in the Kingdom. Anyone who travels without it struggles to replace it.

We prepare the list in Spanish during packing, carton by carton. Details are on the furniture shipping page.

Packing for shipping to Spain

The voyage is short compared with northern Europe, but the container is loaded, unloaded and moved hundreds of kilometres by road. Packing is prepared for that.

  • Wooden furniture: blankets, then corrugated cardboard, and corner protection.
  • Antiques, paintings and mirrors: heat-treated wooden crates with the international stamp.
  • Carpets: cleaned and rolled, with moisture-absorbing bags.
  • Appliances: dried, with moving parts secured. The plug there differs from Saudi Arabia’s.
  • Cartons: five-ply, numbered, with contents recorded on the list.

All the methods are in the packing guide.

Shipping commercial goods to Spain

Valencia, Barcelona and Algeciras are among the Mediterranean’s largest container ports, and Spain is a member of the European Union. Goods cleared there then move freely within the Union.

  • Importer number: the importer needs a European customs identification number before the shipment arrives.
  • Duties: according to the European tariff heading for each product, plus VAT of 21% in most cases.
  • Conformity: appliances, toys and cosmetics have European conformity requirements.
  • Food: dates and plant products enter with a label in Spanish, and animal products under strict health conditions.
  • Samples: go by air with an invoice stating they are samples of no commercial value.

Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Documents required for shipping to Spain

Type of shipment Documents
Belongings and furniture Passport, foreigner’s identification number, end-of-residence certificate, municipal registration, and a list of contents
A car Registration, export certificate, purchase invoice, and its technical specifications
A yacht Registration certificate, proof of ownership, and a drawing of dimensions and weight
Commercial goods Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s European customs number

The documents are explained on the required documents page, and customs procedures on the customs clearance page.

The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla: a different system

The Canary Islands are part of Spain but outside the European VAT area, with a lower local tax. The same applies to Ceuta and Melilla. A shipment to them is cleared there under their system, and anything later moved from them to mainland Spain is treated as an import. Tell us the exact destination when you ask.

What cannot be shipped to Spain or needs a permit

Item Rule
Meat, dairy and their products Prohibited in personal belongings
Counterfeits Confiscated, with a fine
Plants and seeds With a phytosanitary certificate
Medicines Personal quantities with a prescription
Antiques and works of art Must be declared
Weapons and ammunition Prohibited without a licence
Perfumes and batteries Conditional by air; shipped by sea

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Delivery in Spanish cities

Delivering shipments in Spanish cities

Spain is the European Union’s second-largest country by area, and road transport is a visible item in the price. The table shows the nearest port for each city.

City Port Road distance
Madrid Valencia About 360 km
Alicante and Murcia Valencia 170–240 km
Zaragoza Barcelona About 310 km
Málaga and Marbella Algeciras 80–135 km
Seville Algeciras About 190 km
Granada and Córdoba Algeciras or Málaga 130–290 km
Bilbao Barcelona, or its own port About 610 km

Old town quarters have narrow, traffic-restricted lanes, so furniture is moved from the truck on a small cart. State the address and the type of street when booking. Destination details are on the shipping to Spain page.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Spain

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Madrid

Air freight from Jeddah and Riyadh to Barajas Airport in Madrid and to Barcelona airport delivers the shipment in 3 to 6 days.

  • For whom: students’ urgent belongings, samples, dates and gifts, and high-value goods.
  • Calculation: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: starts from SAR 23 per kg, and falls as the weight rises.
  • Service: to the airport, or to the consignee’s door with clearance.
  • What it does not suit: large furniture, which costs several times more by air than by sea.

Details are on the air freight page and in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
