Who ships a car from Qatar to Turkey?

Turkey is one of the most popular summer destinations for people in Qatar, and there is also a large Turkish community working in Doha that goes home for the holidays. So the route serves two main groups: a family that wants its car in Trabzon or Bursa for two months, and a Turkish resident taking the car to their relatives. Each owner has a different period in Turkey and a different paper in Qatar, which the table sums up:

The owner What they ship The method that suits Their paper in Qatar
A Qatari family spending the summer in Turkey The family car or a seven-seat 4×4 A container sent a month before travel, or air Vehicle exit permit, plates kept
A Turkish national working in Doha The car registered in their name in Qatar RoRo or a shared container Exit permit for a holiday, export on final departure
A showroom, company or embassy Display cars or official cars Containers on one booking, or air Letters from the entity and a declaration that fits its status

What does a car shipping company from Qatar to Turkey handle?

Between Doha and Istanbul there are four parties whose papers must agree: the Qatari traffic department, customs at Hamad Port, the shipping line and Turkish customs. The owner does not have the time to go round them, and a paper missing at one stops the rest. We say plainly how we work: Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah, and shipments from Qatar are carried out through partner freight and clearing agents in Doha, while our team manages the booking, the file and the follow-up. This is what the service includes:

  • Eligibility review: we ask about your residence and length of stay to learn whether Turkey accepts your car and for how long.
  • Collection from the address: a flatbed takes the car from the house or the tower, with a condition report and photographs.
  • Exit papers: we settle with you whether it is the permit or the certificate, and follow up fines and the bank letter before booking.
  • Clearance in Turkey: a broker at the arrival port records the car against your passport and arranges its traffic insurance.
  • Delivery: a Turkish carrier to your city, or handover in the port yard if you want to drive yourself.

Our car shipping page sets out the service as a whole, and the car shipping from the Gulf page covers cars that start their journey in Qatar and its neighbours.

Will Turkey accept your car? Temporary entry, not import

This question comes before the price and the ship. Turkey does not ask about the age of the car or its Gulf specification as long as it enters temporarily, but it does ask about its owner: where they live, and how many days they have spent outside Turkey. If the condition is met, the car enters on its Qatari plates without duty; if not, there is no easy way in. Permanent import of a used car is a narrow door on which we build nobody’s plan.

Point of comparison Temporary entry Permanent import
For whom Someone living outside Turkey who has spent more than 185 days outside it in the last twelve months Limited cases with a permit from the Turkish Ministry of Trade
Plates Qatari, as they are Turkish after registration
Number of cars One car per person According to the permit
Charges No import duty Customs duty, special consumption tax and value added tax
Period Up to 730 days, never beyond the owner’s own permitted stay Permanent
Disposing of the car No sale, rental or transfer of ownership Allowed after registration

The summary we give every caller: your car goes for you and your family to use and then comes back, or stays for as long as your status allows. These rules are issued by the Turkish Ministry of Trade and reviewed from time to time, so we confirm what is in force before shipping. Other shipments are covered on the shipping to Turkey page.

Shipping residents’ and family cars from Qatar to Turkey

Qatar has citizens and residents of many nationalities, and the period Turkey grants a car follows its owner, not its plate. A visiting Qatari, a Turkish national working in Doha and a foreigner holding a Turkish residence permit come in through the same door, but each leaves with a different date written against their passport. Someone who actually lives in Turkey is not counted as resident abroad, so they have another path through the Turkish touring and automobile club.

Status of the owner Period in force for the car What is asked of them
A visiting Qatari with no Turkish residence permit As long as their own permitted stay; in practice 90 days in every 180 Passport, registration in their name, licence and insurance valid in Turkey
A resident of Qatar of another nationality As long as their Turkish visa or visa exemption The Qatari residence permit together with the above
A Turkish national working and living in Qatar Up to 730 days Proof of residence abroad and of days spent outside Turkey
A holder of a Turkish residence permit living in Qatar most of the year Up to 730 days within the validity of the permit The Turkish residence permit and the entry and exit record
A student, employee or retiree living in Turkey One or two years on the club carnet Residence permit, enrolment certificate or work permit or retirement document, and a guarantee for the club

The club carnet is not granted to anyone holding Turkish nationality together with another, and a guarantee is lodged for it that is refunded when the car leaves for good. After entry the car is driven by its owner, their spouse, parents and children who live abroad, and a resident of Turkey drives it only in an emergency with the owner present. We write these details with the quotation, because a breach is counted against your passport, not against the car.

Car shipping by sea from Hamad Port in Qatar to the port of Mersin

Hamad Port lies at Umm Al Houl south of Doha; it is Qatar’s main commercial gateway, with a container terminal and a vehicle terminal. Mersin is on the southern coast of Turkey and is the nearest large Turkish port to the exit of the Suez Canal. Between them lies a long road compared with the distance by air: the ship leaves the Arabian Gulf, rounds the whole Arabian Peninsula, then goes up the Red Sea and through the canal to the eastern Mediterranean.

Car shipping by sea from Hamad Port in Qatar to the port of Mersin
Stage What happens Approximate time
From your address to the loading yard Collection by flatbed and a condition report One day
Preparation and entry to Hamad Port Securing or handover to the vehicle terminal, and a Qatari export declaration 2–4 days
Sailing to Mersin Hormuz, the Arabian Sea, Bab el-Mandeb, the Red Sea, the Suez Canal About 16–24 days
Discharge and clearance at Mersin Customs yard, entry against the passport and traffic insurance 2–5 days
Delivery inside Turkey A carrier to Istanbul, Ankara or elsewhere 1–3 days

On a RoRo vessel the car is neither lifted nor wrapped. The terminal driver takes it up the ship’s ramp uncovered, it stands in an enclosed hold, and its wheels are lashed to the deck. In a container the car is driven in and tied down, then the door is closed with a numbered seal. The sailing time given is an estimate and changes with the shipping line, its route and its calls at intermediate ports, so we fix it against the vessel schedule on the day of booking. The ports we work through are on the ports and gateways page.

How long does it take to ship a car from Qatar to Turkey?

The days at sea are almost fixed; what changes is the waiting before and after them. A private container enters the port as soon as its papers are complete. A shared one waits for a second car to the same port. RoRo follows the schedule of a small number of vessels in this direction. The Turkish port changes the time too, as Mersin is reached days before the ports of the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean.

Method Arrival port or airport Door-to-door time Suits
RoRo Mersin 25–35 days depending on the vessel schedule A family car that runs under its own power
Private 20ft container Mersin 25–33 days Luxury and classic cars
Private container Ambarli in Istanbul, or Izmir 28–38 days Those living in northern or western Turkey
Shared 40ft container Mersin 30–38 days and possibly more Those willing to wait for a second car
Air freight Istanbul Airport 3–6 days Luxury and urgent cars

What lengthens the time?

  • A late Qatari paper: an unpaid fine or a bank letter not yet issued, so the car misses the vessel’s cut-off.
  • A change of vessel: some lines move the container to another ship at a hub port, adding a week or so to the voyage.
  • The owner arriving late: the car does not leave the Turkish yard before they attend with their passport.

Times for the other routes are on the transit times page.

The price of shipping a car from Qatar to Turkey

We do not publish a fixed figure for this route, and we prefer to say so openly. Container and RoRo rates from Hamad Port to the eastern Mediterranean change with the season and with the route the lines take, and a figure published today may not hold in a few weeks. The price we send you is itemised: collection in Qatar, securing, sea or air freight, clearance in Turkey and delivery. Turkish port charges and traffic insurance are paid there at their actual value, and we estimate them for you in advance.

The car and how it is shipped Price Note
Saloon on a RoRo vessel to Mersin Set on request Depends on the RoRo schedule available from Hamad Port
4×4 or van on RoRo Set on request Charged on the length and height of the car
Car in a private 20ft container Set on request A sealed container for one car
Car in a shared 40ft container Set on request Shares the freight with a second car
Delivery from the Turkish port to the address Set on request Depends on the city and the distance
Air freight to Istanbul Set on request By weight, dimensions and fuel type
For comparison: saloon on RoRo from Jeddah port to Mersin Starts from SAR 2,800 Our price from Saudi Arabia, a reference and not a price for this route
For comparison: car in a 20ft container from Jeddah port to Mersin Starts from SAR 4,600 The distance from Hamad Port is longer, so the freight is higher

Prices circulating in the market: little is published on this particular route, and it varies widely. For shipping a small car from Qatar to Turkey, USD 800 to 950 is quoted, for a large car or 4×4 USD 1,000 to 1,200, and for the extra packing service USD 150 to 400. Local price guides mention up to QAR 10,000 for shipping a car from Doha to a European port, QAR 12,500 to 15,500 for RoRo to North African ports, and QAR 17,500 to 24,000 for a private container. Other guides put moving a car from the Gulf to Turkey with the temporary entry formalities at about USD 3,000. The width of the gap comes from what each figure covers: the sea leg alone, or collection, clearance and delivery with it.

Factor Its effect on the price
RoRo or container A private container is paid for in full even with one car in it
Size of the car A tall 4×4 takes more space on RoRo and may need a high-cube container
The Turkish port Mersin usually costs less than Ambarli and Izmir
Delivery city Istanbul and Trabzon are far from Mersin; Adana and Antalya are near
One way or return Booking both directions together lowers the cost of each

How do you cut the cost?

  • Send the car five or six weeks before you travel, as haste is what pushes people to air freight.
  • Share a 40ft container with a relative or neighbour spending the summer in the same city.
  • Collect from the Mersin yard and drive yourself if your destination is on the southern coast.

The pricing items are explained on the pricing factors page.

What is particular about shipping cars from Qatar?

Qatar is a small country, so there is no long road leg before the port as there is in the Kingdom. A car reaches Hamad Port from the furthest point in the north in under two hours. All the complexity is in the papers and in the length of the voyage. These are matters specific to a Qatari origin that we go through with every customer:

  • The exit permit is mandatory: the rule in force is that a vehicle leaving for a country outside the Gulf Cooperation Council needs a permit from the General Directorate of Traffic, provided it has no violations and its destination is stated.
  • Length of absence: a car on Qatari plates returns within the period written on its permit, and anyone wanting longer applies for leave. Renewing the registration requires a technical inspection inside Qatar.
  • A car not yet through its first year: a Ministry of Commerce and Industry circular restricts exporting a recently registered car before twelve months are up, and it speaks mainly to dealers and showrooms. If your car is of this kind we ask about it before any booking.
  • No routing through a Saudi port: we do not offer to move a Qatari car overland to Jeddah to sail from there, as the extra border adds papers and does not shorten the journey.

Anyone wanting a car moved between the Kingdom and Qatar by land will find the details in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar.

RoRo or inside a container: which is for your car?

Both methods reach Mersin, and the difference is in what happens to the car on the way. On RoRo the car is driven at least four times: to the yard, onto the ship, off it, and to the arrival yard. In a container nobody touches it between Doha and Turkey. The first is cheaper; the second is calmer and firmer on dates on this route.

Point of comparison RoRo Private 20ft container Shared 40ft container
Loading Driven onto the ship uncovered Lashed by the wheels and the door sealed Lashed with a second car, with a partition between them
Condition of the car Working engine, brakes and steering Enough that the wheels turn Enough that the wheels turn
Sailings from Hamad Port Fewer, and possibly via a collection port Almost weekly When the container is full
Effects with the car Not allowed Possible with a list and a declaration Limited
Cost Lowest Highest In between

We recommend RoRo for a sound family car when its schedule matches your date, and a container for any car of higher value or with a low body. Both methods are explained on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.

Types of cars and vehicles we ship to Turkey

Turkish temporary entry sets no limit on the age of the car, so old and new are alike before customs. What changes is the way it is carried. A tall car, a low one and a non-runner each have a solution, and we settle it from the model and a few photographs you send before pricing.

Vehicle The method that suits What we watch for
Saloon and hatchback RoRo or shared container The easiest class to accept and the lowest freight
Large 4×4 and family car RoRo or high-cube container Height with the roof bars and roof box
Luxury and low sports car Private container or air A long ramp that protects the front bumper
Classic Private container Oil leaks and disconnecting the battery
Motorcycle Wooden crate in a container Treated in Turkey as a separate vehicle in its owner’s name
Non-running car Container only A winch to pull it in; not accepted on RoRo

Preparing the car for sea transport: lashing and protection

The car spends three weeks in the damp and heat of the sea, and moves from a Gulf summer to a port on the Mediterranean. Preparation starts with you before the flatbed arrives and is completed in the loading yard. What we ask of you is little, but it prevents most disputes at delivery.

  • What you do: wash the car so every scratch shows in the photographs, take out belongings and gate cards, leave about a quarter of a tank of fuel, and switch off the alarm.
  • Inspection and record: a signed condition report and photographs from every side with the roof, wheels and odometer, with a copy reaching you before loading.
  • Lashing in the container: straps over all four wheels pulled to the floor rings, and wooden chocks in front of and behind the tyres, so nothing is tied to the body or the suspension arms.
  • Protecting protruding parts: the mirrors are folded, and sensitive parts are covered with soft cloth inside the container. On RoRo the car is not covered, because it is driven.

More detail is in the car shipping guide and on the packing and lashing page.

Export paperwork and export plates in Qatar before shipping the car to Turkey

In Qatar there are two tracks for a departing car, and confusing them is the costliest mistake on this route. The first is a vehicle exit permit: the car travels and returns, with its plates and registration as they are. The second is an export certificate from the traffic department and export plates for the car: its registration in Qatar is struck off and it leaves for good. We check the papers before loading, and choose the track from the answer to one question: will the car come back to Doha?

Export paperwork and export plates in Qatar before shipping the car to Turkey
Item Temporary exit permit Final export
Authority General Directorate of Traffic General Directorate of Traffic, then customs
Fines All paid first All paid first
Bank finance No-objection letter stating the destination Lien released from the record
Plates Qatari plates stay on the car Originals handed in and export plates fitted
Document issued A permit in the name of the owner or their delegate A vehicle export certificate with a short validity
Its effect in Turkey Temporary entry on a valid registration Not suitable for a long temporary entry; needed for the import or transit path

Most cars on this route travel on the first track. The second is needed by someone who has ended their residence in Qatar and is leaving for good, or who has sold the car to a buyer outside it. We warn that owner of one thing: the rule in force is that Turkish customs gives a car on temporary plates only a short period, so the Qatari registration should not be cancelled before it is clear how the car will be treated in Turkey. What is available online through Metrash changes, so we confirm the method in force on the day you apply. Turkey does not normally require a customs carnet for a private car, and it is explained on the triptik carnet page.

Documents for shipping the car, and what is not accepted

The file is one, but it is opened in two countries and two languages. What is read at Hamad Port in Arabic needs an English copy at Mersin, or a notarised Turkish translation for some papers. We receive pictures of the documents first and match the names letter by letter with the passport, because a difference in spelling between the registration and the passport stops the Turkish entry.

Document Who provides it Where it is required
Valid vehicle registration The owner Both ports
Exit permit or export certificate Qatari traffic department Hamad Port or Hamad International Airport
Passport and Qatari ID card The owner Both ports
Driving licence The owner Turkish customs and the insurer
Turkish residence permit or proof of residence abroad The owner Turkish customs
Bank letter The lender Qatari traffic department
Notarised and translated power of attorney The owner, if someone else receives the car Turkish customs
Bill of lading and condition report The freight agent Receiving the car in Turkey

And these are cases in which the car is not loaded until they are dealt with:

The case What is needed
Outstanding traffic fines Payment before applying for the permit
A bank lien without consent A no-objection letter or release of the lien
A fuel or oil leak Repair before entering the port
Undeclared belongings, weapons and flammable materials Removed, as they hold the car up at inspection

The general lists are on the shipping documents and prohibited items pages.

Clearance at the Turkish port and traffic insurance

The arrival of the ship is not the arrival of the car. After discharge the car goes into a customs yard, the broker presents the bill of lading and the file, the officer matches the chassis number, and then the car is entered in the system against its owner’s passport with the last day it may stay. These are points worth knowing before you book your ticket:

  • Attendance: the owner is normally required with the original passport, so time your trip with the arrival of the ship.
  • Insurance: a Qatari policy does not usually cover Turkey, so a Turkish traffic policy is bought for the whole period before leaving the gate.
  • Travelling without the car: anyone leaving Turkey by air while the car stays lodges it in a customs yard or files an undertaking with customs before travelling, or is fined.
  • Overstaying: the penalty rises month by month, and once the delay passes three months it becomes a proportion of the duties the car would have paid.

How we work with customs is on the customs clearance page.

Full insurance for the car during sea transport

The traffic insurance your car carries in Qatar covers it on the road, not in the hold of a ship. The sea carrier limits its liability to a sum nowhere near the price of a car. So with every shipment we offer transport insurance on the value of the car, starting the moment it is collected in Doha and ending with your signature in Turkey.

  • Risks covered: collision and overturning during handling, fire, theft, storm damage, and the car’s share of general average if it is declared.
  • Insured value: the market value of the car with the freight, and a valuation certificate for a rare car.
  • Evidence for a claim: the condition report and the pre-loading photographs, then a written remark on the delivery report before signing.

The types of policy are on the cargo insurance page.

Delivering cars from Qatar in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir

From Mersin the roads branch out to all of Turkey. We deliver in Istanbul and Ankara, in Izmir, Bursa and Antalya, and in the Black Sea towns that summer visitors head for. The car is loaded on a Turkish carrier to your address, or you take it from the port yard yourself. Either way the key is handed over after inspection and a check against the report.

Delivering cars from Qatar in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir
City The car reaches it via Delivery note
Istanbul Container to Ambarli, or Mersin then about 940 km, or by air State the European or Asian side when booking
Ankara Mersin then about 490 km One day on the carrier along the motorway
Izmir Container to the port of Izmir, or Mersin then about 900 km A container to its own port costs less than the road
Bursa The port of Gemlik, or Ambarli A destination for many families, with Yalova on the same road
Antalya Mersin then about 480 km A coastal road, and the carrier is safer for it
Trabzon and Uzungol Mersin then about 900 km to the Black Sea We book the carrier before the ship arrives in summer

If the ship arrives days before you, the car stays in the port yard or is moved to a licensed yard when customs allows, on the terms on the storage page. Delivery to the address is on the door to door page.

Shipping cars for individuals, companies and government bodies

Most customers on the route are individuals shipping one car, but demand also comes from showrooms, companies and official bodies. The difference is not in the ship but in the customs status: an individual’s car enters Turkey in its owner’s name as a temporary entry, and a company or showroom car enters on a commercial declaration or temporary admission for a stated purpose.

  • For individuals and families: a plan built on the holiday dates, with outward and return on one booking.
  • For companies and showrooms: a contract and an invoice, a list of chassis numbers, and containers booked together for display and event cars.
  • For embassies and missions: official correspondence, with the exemption requested from the competent Turkish authority before shipping.
  • For government bodies: a written timetable and a report at every stage.

Is there a land route from Qatar to Turkey? And should you drive the car yourself?

We do not offer car transport by land on this route. The road crosses Saudi Arabia, then Jordan and Syria or Iraq; the state of its crossings and its transit formalities change, and car carriers do not run it regularly. Anyone thinking of driving their own car should compare the two before deciding:

Point of comparison You drive it You ship it
Distance More than three thousand kilometres Not a kilometre on the odometer
Borders Three or four countries with their visas and insurance One port out and one port in
Your time Days of driving out and the same back A flight of about four hours
The car Wear on tyres and engine before the holiday begins Arrives as it was handed over

A wider comparison of the modes is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Air freight for cars from Qatar to Turkey

Air cuts the month down to days. The car is handed over in the cargo area of Hamad International Airport, strapped by its wheels to a metal pallet, and lifted into the hold of a wide-body aircraft. The flight to Istanbul is about four hours, and delivery in Istanbul follows clearance, so the whole time is 3 to 6 days. It is a route for luxury and urgent cars, not for every car.

Air freight for cars from Qatar to Turkey
  • Who it suits: a sports or luxury car, a show or event car with a date, and anyone who decided to travel suddenly and cannot wait for a ship.
  • Classification of the car: in aviation it is treated as dangerous goods because of its fuel and battery, and its declaration is prepared by a certified specialist.
  • Preparation: fuel at its minimum and a secured battery, with conditions set by the carrier for electric and hybrid cars.
  • Papers: the same as for sea in Qatar and Turkey, with an air waybill in place of the sea bill of lading.
  • Price: set on request by weight and dimensions, and several times the sea price.

The entry against the passport is made at Istanbul Airport customs just as it is at the port, so the mode does not change the conditions of entry. We confirm the space on the aircraft before the car leaves your home. Air freight for goods other than cars is on the air freight page.

Collecting cars from Doha and the cities of Qatar

Collection is arranged by our agent in Doha at an agreed time, and the driver calls before arriving. The car is inspected at your door, then moved to the loading yard and from there to Hamad Port or Hamad International Airport. Every city in Qatar is served on the same day because the distances are short.

Area Districts and towns Collection note
Northern Doha The Pearl, West Bay, Lusail, Al Dafna Towers, coordinated with the building management
Central Doha Al Sadd, Al Mansoura, Najma, Al Hilal Busy streets, with collection outside peak hours
Al Rayyan Al Gharrafa, Al Waab, Muaither, Ain Khaled Villas and residential compounds with wide entrances
Al Wakrah and Mesaieed Al Wakrah, Al Wukair, Mesaieed The nearest to Hamad Port
The north and west Umm Salal, Al Khor, Madinat Al Shamal, Dukhan A time fixed a day ahead

Steps for shipping a car from Qatar to Turkey

The order matters here: Turkish eligibility first, then the Qatari paper, then the booking. Someone who starts with the booking may find the car at the port with no permit.

  1. You send to 0552803439 the model of the car, a picture of the registration, your city in Turkey, your travel date and your residence status.
  2. We review your eligibility for temporary entry and the expected period, and send an itemised price for sea and air.
  3. Fines are paid and the bank letter requested if needed, then the exit permit or export certificate is issued.
  4. The agent collects the car from your address, and the condition report is written and photographs taken.
  5. Depending on the method booked, the car is loaded into a container, handed in at the RoRo berth or delivered to air cargo, while the Qatari export declaration is lodged by our agent.
  6. The ship sails or the aircraft takes off, and you receive the bill number and a tracking link.
  7. You reach Turkey a day before the ship, the broker enters the car against your passport and the insurance is bought.
  8. You inspect the car at the port or at your address, sign the report and take the key.

Tracking the sea shipment and managing the route for on-time arrival

We do not promise an arrival day we do not control. The ship has a schedule, the canal has its convoys, and the port has its congestion. What we do control is choosing the right sailing, getting the car into the port before the cut-off, and telling you of any change the hour we learn of it. Follow-up rests on this:

  • In Qatar: a notice of entry to Hamad Port with the container number and seal, then a notice of sailing.
  • At sea: you follow the ship by the bill number on the shipping line’s website, and we tell you when it passes the canal and the updated date.
  • In Turkey: a notice of discharge, of the port charges, and of the carrier’s time to your city.
  • If the voyage runs late: we put forward the alternative available, whether another ship or a change to the delivery date.

How follow-up works is on the shipment tracking page.

Shipping cars from Turkey to Qatar

The opposite direction is part of the same service, because every car that entered temporarily must leave. The car is handed to our agent in Mersin or Istanbul, its departure is stamped at Turkish customs, and with that stamp its entry is erased from the owner’s passport. Then it sails to Hamad Port and returns to its Qatari record if it is within the period of its permit. A car bought in Turkey to be registered in Qatar, on the other hand, enters as an import. The rule in force in Qatar is a customs duty of 5% of the value, a light vehicle no more than five years old, left-hand drive, and a technical inspection before registration. We confirm which of these conditions are in force before the purchase. The destination page is shipping to Qatar.

Home Safe’s tips before shipping your car to Turkey

Short notes from the files of this route, all of them settled before loading day:

  • Count your days outside Turkey in the last year before anything else, as temporary entry rests on them.
  • Put the registration in the name of whoever will travel and receive the car, as a power of attorney between relatives is not always accepted.
  • Note the last day the car may stay in Turkey in your calendar, and book its return three weeks before it.
  • Do not fly out of Turkey in the middle of the holiday before you have settled the status of the car with customs.

How do you choose a car shipping company from Qatar to Turkey?

Advertisements look alike, and it is the questions that reveal the difference. Put what is in the table to any company, and compare the answers before the prices:

The sign What it shows
It asks about your residence and your days outside Turkey It knows the temporary entry condition
It distinguishes the exit permit from the export certificate It will not cancel your plates needlessly
It names the arrival port and the broker there Its price reaches your hand, not the quay
It mentions Turkish port charges and traffic insurance No surprises at collection
It tells you how it works in Qatar and who collects the car It is honest about what it owns and what it coordinates

Common mistakes when shipping cars from Qatar to Turkey

Seven mistakes recur every summer, and avoiding them is easier than fixing them:

  • Shipping the car before checking the condition of 185 days outside Turkey.
  • Obtaining an export certificate and export plates for a car that will return after the holiday.
  • Booking the ship before the fines are paid and the bank letter issued.
  • The car reaching Mersin while its owner is still in Doha.
  • Leaving the car with a relative who lives in Turkey to drive it.
  • Comparing a price to the port with a price to the address as if they were the same thing.
  • Forgetting the Turkish exit stamp when sending the car back, so the entry stays on the passport.

Frequently asked questions about shipping cars from Qatar to Turkey

Which is the best car shipping company from Qatar to Turkey?

The best one starts with you at Turkish customs, not at the ship. It asks where you live for most of the year and how long the car will stay in Turkey, then chooses the Qatari paper, the port and the method for you. Home Safe is a registered establishment that runs this route through approved agents in Doha and customs brokers in Mersin and Istanbul, with one number to follow up from the first step to the last: 0552803439.

How much does it cost to ship a car from Qatar to Turkey?

The price on this route is set on request, because vessel rates from Hamad Port to the eastern Mediterranean shift from one month to the next, and we do not write a figure we cannot stand by. What circulates for a small car starts at about USD 800 to the port and climbs with size and service. For comparison, our line from Jeddah port to Mersin starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon on RoRo and from SAR 4,600 for a car in a 20ft container.

How long does the journey take from Doha to Mersin or Istanbul?

By sea, 25 to 38 days between handing the car over in Qatar and receiving it in Turkey. The ship goes round the Arabian Peninsula, then through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, and that alone takes two to three weeks. A container bound for Istanbul or Izmir adds a few days to Mersin. By air, 3 to 6 days from collection to delivery in Istanbul.

Can a Qatari car enter Turkey on its own plates?

Yes, as a temporary entry. The rule in force at Turkish customs is that the owner lives outside Turkey and has spent more than 185 days outside it in the year before entering, and that the car is registered in their name or they hold an accepted power of attorney. The Qatari plates stay on it, no import duty is collected, and it is recorded against their passport until it leaves.

How long can my car stay in Turkey?

The upper limit in force is 730 days, but it never exceeds the time the owner is personally allowed to stay. A visitor with no Turkish residence permit keeps the car for as long as their visa or visa exemption allows, and a holder of a Turkish residence permit who lives in Qatar for most of the year has a period that runs with that permit. Someone who works or studies in Turkey brings it in on the Turkish touring and automobile club carnet for one or two years.

Do I need an export certificate and export plates for a car I will bring back?

No. A returning car leaves on a vehicle exit permit from the General Directorate of Traffic and keeps its plates and registration. The export certificate and its plates are for a car that leaves Qatar and does not come back. Dropping the plates of a holiday car is a mistake, because Turkey bases temporary entry on a valid registration in the country of residence, and it gives temporary plates only a short stay.

How do I obtain the vehicle exit permit or the export certificate in Qatar?

Both come from the General Directorate of Traffic, through the Metrash app and the Ministry of Interior website or by visiting the traffic section, depending on what is available on the day you apply. The shared condition is that the car has no violations, that the application is made by the owner or someone who can prove their capacity, and that the destination is stated. For a final export the lien is released, the original plates are handed in and export plates are fitted.

Can I sell the car in Turkey or register it there?

Not under temporary entry. The car may not be sold, rented out or transferred to a resident of Turkey. Permanent import of a used car is confined to limited cases and a permit from the Turkish Ministry of Trade, and its taxes are heavy. When someone asks us about that path we review their case before the car moves, and we do not promise what the regulations do not grant.

RoRo or container from Hamad Port?

A container is available almost every week and its dates are firmer. RoRo costs less when it is available, but its sailings from the Gulf to the eastern Mediterranean are fewer, and the car may be gathered at another Gulf port before sailing. We offer you both with the date of each, and you choose once you have seen the difference in price and days.

Can the car be shipped by air from Hamad International Airport?

Yes. The car is secured on an air cargo pallet at Hamad International Airport and reaches Istanbul Airport after a flight of about four hours, then it is cleared and delivered within 3 to 6 days of collection. The route is for luxury and urgent cars, and its price is set on request once the weight, dimensions and fuel type of the car are known.

Do I have to be in Turkey when the car arrives?

As a rule, yes, because the car is recorded against your passport in the customs system. Book your trip around the arrival date of the ship, not weeks before it, as a car that arrives ahead of its owner waits in a yard where storage is charged by the day. Where customs accepts an agent with a notarised power of attorney translated into Turkish, we arrange that with you in advance.

Can I ship belongings inside the car?

On RoRo nothing stays in the car except the spare wheel and its tools. In a private container personal effects can be placed beside the car if they are written on a list and declared, bearing in mind that Turkish customs treats effects separately from the car. Anything hidden in the boot without a declaration holds up the whole car at inspection.

My car is financed by a bank in Qatar. Can it be shipped?

It can, after the written consent of the bank. The lien appears in the traffic record, so an exit permit is not normally issued without a no-objection letter from the lender that states the destination and the period, and an export certificate is not issued until the lien is released. Ask for the letter first, as it is the paper with the longest wait in the file.

Should I drive the car overland from Qatar to Turkey instead of shipping it?

The road is possible in theory through Saudi Arabia and then Jordan and Syria or Iraq, but it is more than three thousand kilometres, needs a visa and insurance for every country, and the state of its crossings changes. We do not offer car transport on it. Someone who ships flies with the family in four hours and finds the car in Turkey with its odometer as it was handed over.

How do I bring the car back from Turkey to Qatar?

You hand it to our agent in Mersin or Istanbul before its period ends, and its departure is stamped at Turkish customs so that its entry is lifted from your passport, then it sails to Hamad Port or flies to Doha. A car that left on a temporary permit returns to its Qatari record without a fresh import as long as it is within the period written on its permit.
