Why is land freight the way to Qatar?

Qatar is a peninsula reached by land only through Saudi Arabia. One road leaves Al-Ahsa for Salwa, crosses to Abu Samra, and runs a hundred kilometres on to Doha. That is why most of what is shipped from the Kingdom to Qatar goes by truck: the distance is short, there is a single border, and the truck is loaded at your door and unloaded at the consignee’s with no handling at a port or airport.

Air freight is hours quicker but several times dearer, so it is kept for documents and urgent parcels. Sea from Dammam to Hamad Port suits heavy commercial containers only, because a truck beats it to Doha by days.

Method Door-to-door time Suits Pricing unit
A full closed truck 1 – 4 days A home’s furniture, a large quantity of goods The truck
A shared load 3 – 6 days A room, cartons, suitcases, a few pallets The cubic metre or the piece
A car carrier 1 – 4 days Cars The car
A refrigerated truck 1 – 3 days Foodstuffs and medicines The truck
Air 1 – 2 days Documents and urgent parcels The kilogram
Sea to Hamad Port 7 – 12 days Heavy commercial containers The container

Transit times from the Kingdom’s cities to Doha

The time follows how far your city is from the Salwa crossing. The Eastern Province and Riyadh are a day’s drive away, and the west and south two to three days. Add a day for dismantling and packing if the shipment is furniture, and hours to a day for clearance at the two crossings.

City of departure Distance to Doha Full truck Shared load
Al-Ahsa and Hofuf About 250 km One day 2 – 3 days
Dammam, Khobar and Jubail 390 – 470 km 1 – 2 days 3 – 4 days
Riyadh and Al-Kharj About 580 km 1 – 2 days 3 – 5 days
Qassim and Hail 900 – 1,200 km 2 – 3 days 4 – 6 days
Madinah About 1,400 km 3 – 4 days 5 – 7 days
Jeddah, Makkah and Taif 1,400 – 1,530 km 3 – 4 days 5 – 7 days
Abha, Jazan and Najran 1,400 – 1,750 km 3 – 5 days 6 – 8 days
Tabuk About 1,850 km 4 – 5 days 6 – 8 days

A full truck leaves on the day of loading and stops only at the crossing. A shared load waits for the Qatar-bound truck to fill, and is then distributed to addresses in Doha, which is where the extra days come from.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

At Home Safe, prices start as in the table, worked out from Riyadh. From Dammam and Al-Ahsa they are lower because of the shorter distance, and from Jeddah and the south higher. The final price is set once we know what you are shipping: send a list or photos and your city to 0552803439, and it reaches you itemised the same day.

What you are shipping Method Price starts from
A small parcel Shared load SAR 90
A carton Shared load SAR 140
A suitcase of up to 25 kg Shared load SAR 230
Belongings by the cubic metre Shared load SAR 550 a metre
A small furniture shipment Shared load SAR 920
A complete bedroom A small truck SAR 2,000
A whole flat A dedicated truck SAR 4,100
A saloon car Shared carrier SAR 1,100
An SUV Shared carrier SAR 1,750
A luxury or classic car Enclosed carrier SAR 3,500

These are transport prices. Dismantling and assembly, full packing and customs clearance are items stated separately in the quote, and Qatari customs charges, if any, are paid at the crossing.

What sets the final price?

Factor Its effect
City of departure Al-Ahsa is 250 km from Doha, and Jeddah 1,500 km
Volume of the shipment It sets the size of truck. Work it out with the volume calculator
Full or shared Shared is cheaper for a little, and full cheaper for a lot, and quicker
Dismantling and assembly Kitchens, air conditioners and large wardrobes take time and technicians
Packing Full, for every piece, or for the fragile only, with wooden crates for ornaments
Floor and lift At your home here and your home there, with the hoist a separate item
Season Summer and the end of the school year are the peak for moving

Compare quotes on what they cover: a low price with no packing, clearance or assembly is not cheaper than one that includes them. Ask every company: is this from my door to the consignee’s? And does it include the Abu Samra crossing?

A full truck or a shared load?

This is the first question that sets the price and the time. With a full truck you hire the whole vehicle: it is loaded with your furniture alone, sealed, leaves the same day, and is opened only for customs inspection and then at your door in Qatar. With a shared load you share the truck with others and pay for the space your belongings take.

Comparison Full truck Shared load
Suits The furniture of a flat or villa, or a large quantity of goods A room, a few pieces, or cartons and suitcases
Departure Leaves on the day of loading Waits for the truck to fill
Handling Loaded once and unloaded once Consolidated at the warehouse, then distributed
Price The price of the whole truck By the cubic metre or the piece
Packing Ordinary and sturdy Sturdier, with each customer’s label and partition

Which truck is enough for your furniture?

Truck Approximate length Holds roughly
A small closed truck 4.5 metres One or two rooms, or a shared load
A medium closed truck 6 – 7 metres A two- to three-room flat
A closed trailer 13.5 metres A whole villa, or commercial goods

The rule: if your furniture fills more than half a truck, a full one is cheaper and safer. We work that out from your list before sending the price.

Moving furniture from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

Most people who ship to Qatar are moving a home: an employee whose job has moved to Doha, a Qatari family returning, or a resident leaving the Kingdom for good. Moving a whole home is not just loading. It means dismantling what comes apart, packing that withstands six hundred kilometres or more of desert road, an inventory customs will accept, and assembly that puts every room back as it was.

Dismantling and packing at your home

  • Bedrooms and wardrobes: taken apart by a carpenter, their panels numbered, and each piece’s screws in a bag taped to it. Mattresses in their covers.
  • Majlis seating and sofas: bubble wrap and then blankets, with reinforced cardboard on corners and legs.
  • Kitchens: units, marble and built-in appliances are removed. Marble goes between timber boards, upright rather than flat.
  • Electrical appliances: the fridge is unplugged and dried a day ahead and travels upright, the washing machine’s drum is fixed with its transit bolts, and screens go in double-walled cartons.
  • Air conditioners: removed by a technician with the gas pumped down, and both units wrapped.
  • Ornaments, glass and chandeliers: foam, then a wooden crate built to size.
  • Office furniture: desks, meeting tables and equipment, outside working hours.

Inventory and loading

Every package takes a number, and the numbers are written on the contents list with a description of what each holds. That list is what is presented at Salwa and Abu Samra, and its precision shortens the inspection. Then the heavy goes at the bottom and the fragile on top, everything is secured with straps, and the truck is sealed.

Unloading and assembly in Qatar

At your new home each piece goes to its room, as written on its carton. What was dismantled is assembled, curtains and screens are hung, the numbers are checked against the list with you, and the packing waste is taken away. Towers and compounds in Doha and Lusail require the service lift to be booked and an entry permit from building management, so arrange it before the arrival date.

With the move comes Home Safe’s guarantee: furniture kept safe from breakage and scratches during our work, recorded in photos before loading and at delivery. Details are on the furniture and household shipping page and the packing guide page.

The Salwa – Abu Samra crossing and customs clearance

A shipment passes two stations. At the Saudi Salwa crossing the export declaration is lodged through the Fasah platform, and the truck is weighed and examined. It then crosses to the Qatari Abu Samra crossing, where the declaration is lodged through the Al Nadeeb system, the truck goes through scanning and inspection, and charges, if any, are paid. Having both declarations ready before the truck arrives is what makes the crossing a matter of hours rather than days.

  • Customs duty: 5% of the value of the goods and their freight on most items.
  • Used furniture and belongings: mostly exempt for someone moving to live in Qatar.
  • Goods of Gulf origin: exempt with a certificate of origin.
  • Goods that entered the Gulf with duty paid: not charged a second time if payment is proved by the settlement document.
  • Inspection: cartons may be opened. A numbered list and tidy packing shorten the time.

How do you obtain the customs exemption?

  1. You are moving there to live: with a Qatari residence permit or work visa, or as a returning Qatari.
  2. The belongings are used: one home’s furniture and personal effects, not commercial quantities.
  3. They are not in factory packaging: a new appliance in its box is treated as goods, and its duty is paid.
  4. The list matches what is in the truck: every package with its number and description.

All the Gulf’s rules are in the article on shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Gulf states, and details are on the customs clearance page.

Documents required for shipping to Qatar

The documents are few, but one missing stops the truck at the crossing. We go through them with you before loading day, and obtain the export declaration under an electronic authorisation from you.

Type of shipment From the sender From the consignee in Qatar
Furniture and belongings: a citizen National ID, passport and the contents list Qatar ID or residence permit
Furniture and belongings: a departing resident Residence permit, passport, final exit visa and the contents list Qatari residence permit or work visa
A car Registration, export certificate, and the owner’s ID The consignee’s ID, and the settlement document if there is one
Commercial goods Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and commercial register Commercial register and import licence
Parcels and suitcases ID, and a statement of contents Name, mobile number and address

The delivery address in Qatar is written with the zone, street and building numbers, and a Qatari mobile number. The documents are explained on the required documents page.

Shipping cars from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

A car goes to Qatar on a car carrier, not with the furniture. A shared carrier takes several cars and is the cheapest, an enclosed carrier protects a luxury car from sand and stones, and a dedicated carrier takes your car alone and leaves at once. Anyone who prefers can drive their car to the crossing themselves on export plates.

Method Suits Price starts from
Shared open carrier Saloons and family cars SAR 1,100
Shared carrier: SUV Larger cars SAR 1,750
Enclosed carrier Luxury, sports and classic cars SAR 3,500
Dedicated carrier Anyone wanting an immediate slot Priced on request
  • Export: an export certificate from the traffic department, after fines are settled and the plates surrendered, with temporary export plates.
  • Duty: 5% of the car’s value as assessed by Qatari customs.
  • The settlement document: a car that entered the Kingdom through a dealer with its duty paid is not charged again if the settlement document is presented. Ask about it before shipping, as it saves 5% of the car’s value.
  • The age condition: Qatar has a condition on the age of a used car to be registered, which we confirm before shipping.
  • Side of the wheel: left-hand drive, like cars from the Kingdom.
  • Electric cars: shipped at a low state of charge, with the main disconnect opened where possible.
  • Registration: a technical inspection and Qatari insurance, then the plates.
  • A temporary visit: someone entering in their Saudi car for a visit does not export it, and needs only insurance that covers Qatar.

The general conditions are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia.

Shipping suitcases, cartons and parcels

Not everyone shipping to Qatar is moving a home. Students, employees and travellers ship just suitcases and cartons, and these go in a shared load at a price per piece.

  • Suitcases: an alternative to excess baggage on the plane. The suitcase is wrapped tight in film and arrives at your door. The price starts from SAR 230 for a suitcase of up to 25 kg.
  • Cartons: books, clothes and kitchenware, in double-walled cartons. The price starts from SAR 140 a carton.
  • Parcels and gifts: handed to the consignee in person. The price starts from SAR 90.
  • Mid-sized loads: more than suitcases and less than a home, by the cubic metre from SAR 550.

Each piece takes a label with its owner’s name and its number, and is kept apart from other people’s shipments. Details are on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping commercial goods to Qatar

The Qatari market imports building materials, foodstuffs, dates and industrial products from the Kingdom. The truck is how they travel: loaded at the factory or warehouse and unloaded at the importer’s warehouse in Doha’s Industrial Area.

  • A full truck: a closed or flatbed trailer for large quantities and building materials.
  • A shared load: a few pallets, for traders and shops.
  • A refrigerated truck: for dairy, meat and medicines, at a set and recorded temperature.
  • What is shipped: ceramics and marble, dates and foodstuffs, appliances, and spare parts and equipment.
Document Its role
Commercial invoice The value of the goods on which duty is worked out
Packing list The contents and weight of each pallet
Certificate of origin Exempts Saudi goods from the 5% duty
Certificate of conformity For products subject to technical regulations
Export declaration Obtained through the Fasah platform

Online shop orders: we collect your shop’s orders from your warehouse and deliver them to the customer’s door in Qatar, and arrange returns in the opposite direction. Companies with regular shipments have contract rates. Details are on the commercial shipping page.

What cannot be shipped to Qatar, or needs a permit

Qatari customs is exact, and a single prohibited item stops the whole truck. Go through what is in your cartons before they are closed.

Item Rule
Alcoholic drinks Banned
Pork and its products Banned
E-cigarettes and their liquids Banned
Weapons and the like Banned
Publications and material contrary to public decency Banned
Drones With a prior permit
Broadcasting and wireless devices With a permit
Medicines Personal quantities with a prescription
Foodstuffs Personal quantities, and commercial ones with their certificates
Cash and gold Carry them yourself

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Delivery in Qatar’s cities

Qatar is small, so all its cities are under two hours from the Abu Samra crossing. We deliver to the address itself: a villa in a compound, a flat in a tower, or a warehouse in the Industrial Area.

City Example areas Distance from Abu Samra
Doha Al Dafna, West Bay, Al Sadd, Al Mansoura, The Pearl About 100 km

More on the destination is on the shipping to Qatar page.

Supporting services: storage and the hoist

  • Storage: if the date your home in Qatar is handed over does not match the date you leave your home here, the furniture is stored, packed, until shipping day.
  • The hoist: for upper floors and pieces the stairs or lift cannot take, at both homes.
  • Wooden crates: built to the size of ornaments, glass and marble.
  • Tracking: we tell you at loading, on passing each crossing, and before arrival.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

The flight from Riyadh or Dammam to Doha is about an hour, and from Jeddah about two and a half, with daily flights. So an air shipment reaches Hamad International Airport the same day or the next, and is delivered to the address after clearance.

  • For whom: documents and contracts, keys and official papers, samples, spare parts holding up work, and urgent parcels.
  • When not to choose it: for furniture, suitcases and cartons. Land delivers them in two days for a fraction of the cost.
  • How it is charged: on chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: ask for it on 0552803439.

Details are in the article on express international shipping and the article on the air freight office in Jeddah.

How do you choose a shipping company to Qatar?

Prices on this route are close to one another, and the difference lies behind them. Before you sign, check four things:

Criterion What to ask for The warning sign
Legal standing A commercial registration and a known address A mobile number with no establishment
The truck Closed and sealed An open truck for a desert road
Clearance A broker at Salwa and another at Abu Samra “Clear it yourself at the crossing”
Documents A contract, a numbered inventory and a written guarantee No paper proving what was handed over

Home Safe Logistics Services Est. is registered under commercial registration 4030601060. The full criteria are in the article on the international shipping company in Saudi Arabia.

Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Qatar

  1. You send what you are shipping: a list or photos, your city in the Kingdom, and your address in Qatar.
  2. We review your customs position: exemption or duty, and what is treated as goods.
  3. You receive the price, itemised, and the date.
  4. You prepare the documents and authorise us electronically for the export declaration.
  5. Dismantling, packing and numbering at your home, then loading and sealing the truck.
  6. The crossing: clearance at Salwa, then at Abu Samra.
  7. Delivery and assembly at your address, and checking the list with you.

Common mistakes when shipping to Qatar

  • New boxed appliances among the furniture: they are treated as goods, bear duty, and delay the truck.
  • A general contents list: “household items” is not accepted, and every carton gets opened because of it.
  • A prohibited item in a carton: a single e-cigarette is enough to hold the shipment.
  • An open truck: dust and sun, and winter rain on the coast.
  • Shipping a car before asking about its age condition and its settlement document.
  • A consignee with no valid Qatari residence permit or ID: the shipment is not cleared.
  • Overlooking the building permit and service lift at towers in Doha and Lusail.
  • Booking two days before final exit in the summer season.
