Who ships from Riyadh to Oman, and what do they ship?

Since the direct land road between the Kingdom and the Sultanate opened in December 2021, shipping from Riyadh to Oman crosses one border instead of two. With it the number of shippers has grown: Omani families returning home, employees moving to Muscat and Duqm, factories supplying the Omani market, and individuals sending to relatives. Each of these shipments has a method that suits it:

Shipper What they ship Most suitable method
A family moving to Oman A full home’s furniture and appliances Full truck with dismantling and assembly
A relocating employee or a student A bedroom, cartons and suitcases Shared load
Someone sending to family Cartons, gifts and small appliances Parcels by land, door to door
A trader or factory General goods on pallets or a full truck By the tonne or the truck, with a certificate of origin
A car owner An ordinary or luxury car Car carrier
Companies, official bodies and embassies Office furniture, equipment and exhibitions A dedicated truck on a set date

The route from Riyadh to Oman: two roads

A truck shipping from Riyadh to Oman on the Empty Quarter road

There are two land routes between Riyadh and Oman, and the difference between them is not distance alone. The first is direct: it leaves Riyadh south-east to Al-Kharj and Haradh, then joins the Empty Quarter road at the Batha junction and covers 564 km of desert to the Empty Quarter border post. After the Omani Ramlat Khaliya post, 161 km remain to the town of Ibri, and from there to Nizwa and Muscat. The second crosses the Batha post into the Emirates, then enters Oman on the Buraimi or Sohar side.

Comparison The direct road through the Empty Quarter The road through the Emirates
Number of borders One border Two borders, with a transit crossing
Clearance Saudi export and Omani import only A transit declaration in the Emirates is added
Enters Oman at Ibri in Al Dhahirah governorate Buraimi or North Al Batinah
Best for Ibri, Nizwa, Muscat, Sur, Duqm and Salalah Buraimi, Sohar, North Al Batinah and Musandam
Nature of the road Long and desert, with stations far apart Populated and serviced along its length

The Empty Quarter road needs preparation that others do not. Its speed limit is between 90 and 110 km per hour depending on the section, its stations are far apart, and sandstorms can slow traffic. So our trucks leave with a full tank and checked tyres, and the load covers are sealed against sand. This is one reason we insist on tight packing for every piece.

Method Door-to-door time to Muscat Suits
Full truck 3–4 days A full home’s furniture and goods
Shared load 5–7 days One or two rooms, and a few pallets
Car carrier 4–6 days Cars
Parcels by land 3–5 days to Muscat, and up to 7 to Salalah Cartons and suitcases
Air One to 3 days Documents and urgent parcels

What lengthens the time?

  • A distant destination: Salalah, Duqm and Musandam add a day or two over Muscat.
  • A vague list of contents: “household items” with no detail brings a manual inspection.
  • Goods without a certificate of origin: they are treated as foreign and duty is charged.
  • Waiting for consolidation: a shared load waits for the truck to fill.
  • Weather: sandstorms in the Empty Quarter, and the khareef rains in Dhofar between June and September.

Shipping prices from Riyadh to Oman

The price on this route follows four things: your shipment’s volume, whether you take the truck alone or share it, the delivery town in Oman, and the services you ask for at both ends. The town matters here more than on any other Gulf route, because Salalah is about 1,000 km from Muscat. These are the prices our services start from, from your door in Riyadh:

What you ship To Muscat and around To Salalah
Parcel up to 5 kg SAR 41 SAR 50
Parcels up to 30 kg SAR 165 Set on request
Carton SAR 140 Set on request
Per kilogram above 50 kg SAR 5.5 per kilogram SAR 7.4 per kilogram
Bedroom SAR 1,700 SAR 2,300
Two-bedroom flat’s furniture SAR 2,950 Set on request
Villa’s furniture SAR 6,350 Set on request
Commercial goods by the tonne SAR 870 per tonne Set on request
Car on a carrier SAR 2,950 Set on request
Air freight SAR 14 per kilogram Set on request

Prices quoted in the market for this route: a parcel up to 5 kg between SAR 45 and 75, a carton from SAR 150, a bedroom between SAR 1,200 and 2,500, a two-bedroom flat’s furniture between SAR 2,200 and 3,500, a villa between SAR 4,500 and 7,000, and a car between SAR 3,200 and 4,800. So use the table as a point of comparison for any offer you receive, and always ask: does the figure cover packing, clearance and unloading?

What sets the price Its effect
Volume The first factor. Work it out with the volume calculator
Full truck or shared Full is faster and dearer; shared means you pay for your space only
Delivery town Muscat, Nizwa and Ibri are on the road; Salalah, Duqm and Musandam are farther
Dismantling, packing and assembly Lines stated in the offer, not added after it
Floor and lift In Riyadh and in Oman, and whether a hoist is needed
Season Summer, and the khareef season in Salalah, see higher demand

How do you lower the cost?

  • Choose a shared load if your date is not pressing.
  • Do not ship what costs less in Muscat than carrying it 1,300 km.
  • Gather your cartons into one shipment; the per-kilogram rate above 50 kg is far cheaper than the parcel price.
  • Book at least two weeks before summer.
  • Send clear photos of everything you ship; an accurate estimate prevents a price difference on loading day.

How does shipping to Oman compare with the other Gulf states?

Oman is the farthest Gulf destination from Riyadh by land, which explains the difference in time and price from Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain. The table sets the five routes side by side, so you know what to expect before you ask for a price:

Destination from Riyadh Approximate distance Border post Full-truck time
Bahrain About 480 km King Fahd Causeway One to two days
Qatar About 580 km Salwa ↔ Abu Samra 2–3 days
Kuwait 650–700 km Ruqai or Khafji 2–3 days
The Emirates About 1,000 km to Dubai Batha ↔ Ghuwaifat 2–4 days
Oman 1,300–1,500 km to Muscat Empty Quarter ↔ Ramlat Khaliya 3–4 days

Shipping furniture and household goods from Riyadh to Oman

Packing furniture in Riyadh before shipping it to Muscat

Furniture going to Oman travels the longest Gulf road, half of it in open desert with heat, sand and constant vibration. So packing that is enough for a move inside Riyadh does not hold up here. We pack on the assumption that a piece will stay in the truck for three days, and may be opened for inspection at the border and closed again.

  • Dismantling: bedrooms, wardrobes and kitchens are dismantled and their parts numbered, with the screws in bags taped to them.
  • Packing: blankets then corrugated cardboard for wood, foam and wooden crates for glass and marble, and thick wrap for sofas and mattresses that keeps sand out.
  • Appliances: the fridge and washing machine are emptied and dried a day before. Oman’s supply is 240 volts with the same plugs as the Kingdom, so your appliances work there without an adapter.
  • Air conditioners: removed with the gas pumped down into the outdoor unit, and the two units packed separately.
  • Inventory: a numbered list of every carton and piece, which is what goes to Omani customs.
  • Assembly: our crew in Oman unloads, assembles and removes the packing waste.

Service details are on the furniture shipping page, and packing methods in the packing guide. For those shipping from the west of the Kingdom, see the article shipping from Jeddah to Oman.

Full truck or shared load?

On a route this long the gap between the two options widens. A full truck moves on your loading day and takes the shortest road to your door. A shared load waits to fill, then passes through more than one town in Oman to unload each shipment at its owner’s address. If your destination is Muscat or Nizwa a shared load is practical; if it is Salalah or Duqm, ask about the trip date before you decide.

Comparison Shared load Full truck
You pay for Your shipment’s space only The whole truck
Time to Muscat 5–7 days 3–4 days
Departure Once the truck is full On loading day
Handling May be moved between two trucks Loaded once and unloaded once
Best for Up to about three rooms A full home or a lot of goods

Shipping general and commercial goods from Riyadh to Oman

Saudi Arabia and Oman are in one customs union. So goods of Saudi origin cross with no customs duty, provided a valid certificate of origin travels with them. With the direct road, a truck now goes from Riyadh’s factories to Muscat’s markets and the industrial zones of Sohar and Duqm without passing through a third country.

  • Units: by the tonne or pallet in a shared load, and by the truck for quantities. Commercial goods start from SAR 870 per tonne.
  • Certificate of origin: for Saudi and Gulf goods, and it is what exempts them from duty.
  • Foreign goods: they carry the unified Gulf duty of 5% if it was not paid when they entered the Gulf.
  • Value added tax: 5% in Oman on new goods, collected at import.
  • Electronic clearance: the declaration is filed in advance through the Fasah platform in the Kingdom and the Bayan system in Oman, so the truck arrives with its file ready.
  • Foodstuffs: with a label and expiry date, and chilled items in a refrigerated truck.

Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Shipping small parcels and electronics

Much of what is shipped to Oman is neither furniture nor trade goods, but a carton for a relative, a phone and laptop bought in Riyadh, or suitcases travelling ahead of their owner. These go with the weekly land trips door to door. They are charged by the parcel up to 5 kg, then by the kilogram as the weight grows.

  • Parcels: up to 5 kg from SAR 41 to Muscat, and from SAR 50 to Salalah.
  • Cartons: double-wall from SAR 140, none over 30 kg.
  • Electronics: in the original carton if available, or in foam and reinforced cardboard, and new ones are declared with their invoice.
  • Screens: in a wooden crate or special carton, carried upright.
  • Valuables: declared at their value and insured.

Details are on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping cars from Riyadh to Oman

The distance here makes a carrier the logical choice. Driving a car 1,300 km, half of it in the Empty Quarter, adds wear and risk its owner does not need. A car on a carrier arrives with its odometer as it left. The price starts from SAR 2,950 to Muscat.

Item Detail
Export from the Kingdom Paying fines, then the export certificate from the traffic department and surrendering the plates
Age condition The rule in practice is that a used private car is not registered in Oman if it is more than 7 years old. We confirm what applies before shipping
Customs duty 5% of the car’s value if its duty has not been paid in the Gulf before
Specifications A Gulf-spec car is usually registered without modification
Inspection and registration A technical inspection with the Royal Oman Police, then insurance and plates
Condition of the car Empty of belongings, fuel at a quarter, and photographed before loading

Details are on the car shipping page.

Border posts and Omani customs

Every shipment goes through two clearances: export on the Saudi side, and import on the Omani side. Both are quick when the papers are complete. But the Empty Quarter post is far from any town, so a missing paper there means waiting in the desert, not in a nearby office. That is why we prepare the file in Riyadh before the truck moves, and send a copy to our broker at the border.

Type of shipment Charges in Oman Documents
Used furniture and belongings Exempt for someone moving to live there ID or Iqama, proof of the consignee’s residence or work in Oman, and a detailed list of contents
Goods of Saudi or Gulf origin No customs duty, with 5% VAT on new items Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin
Foreign goods 5% if not paid before, plus VAT Invoice, packing list, and proof that duty was paid
Car 5% if not paid before Registration, export certificate and owner’s ID
Personal parcels Exempt within personal use Description and value of the contents, and the consignee’s address and number

The documents are explained on the required documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Oman or needs a permit

Item Rule
Alcohol and drugs Prohibited
Weapons, ammunition and fireworks Prohibited or by licence
E-cigarettes and electronic shisha Prohibited in Oman
Medicines Personal quantities with a prescription
Drones and radio equipment By prior permit
Flammables and gas cylinders Not loaded with furniture
Cash, gold and original documents Not shipped with furniture; keep them with you
Counterfeit goods Confiscated

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Destinations inside Oman

Delivering shipments in Muscat

Oman is large, and its towns are farther apart than anyone used to shipping to Kuwait or Qatar expects. Between Ibri, the first town after the border, and Salalah in the far south there are more than 1,000 km. Knowing where your town sits on the road explains the time and the price:

Town Governorate Position on the road
Ibri Al Dhahirah The first town, 161 km after the border
Nizwa Al Dakhiliyah About 150 km after Ibri
Muscat, Seeb, Bawshar and Muttrah Muscat About 300 km after Ibri
Sohar North Al Batinah About 200 km north-west of Muscat, also served through the Emirates
Buraimi Al Buraimi Next to Al Ain, served through the Emirates
Sur South Al Sharqiyah About 200 km south-east of Muscat
Duqm Al Wusta About 500 km south of Muscat, an economic zone and port
Salalah Dhofar About 1,000 km south of Muscat

Write the address with the wilayat, area, way number and building, with an Omani mobile number. Mention the floor and whether the building has a lift. Destination details are on the shipping to Oman page.

Shipping for individuals, companies and embassies

The shipment looks the same, but what each customer needs from it differs. We arrange the service around who is shipping, not around the truck:

Customer What matters to them What we provide
Individuals and families Safe furniture and a price with no surprises A photo survey, dismantling, packing and assembly, and an itemised price
Companies and factories The date and the documents A dedicated truck, tax invoices, and periodic trips under contract
Embassies and official bodies Privacy, records and exemptions Coordinating exemption documents, a delivery record, and delivery inside the premises

Is there sea freight from Riyadh to Oman?

Riyadh is an inland city, and its nearest port is King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. From there containers sail to Sohar port, and from Jeddah port to Salalah port. The sailing itself is a few days, but with haulage to the port, waiting for the vessel and clearance at both ends, the time becomes 10 to 20 days. So sea freight suits heavy commercial containers whose owner is in no hurry. For furniture, parcels and cars, land is faster and cheaper. The full comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Air freight from Riyadh to Oman

Air freight from Riyadh to Muscat

The flight from King Khalid Airport to Muscat International Airport is about two hours, and the shipment arrives within one to 3 days including clearance at both airports. Because the land road is long, the gap between air and land here is wider than to any other Gulf state. That makes air a practical choice for anything light and urgent.

  • For whom: documents, urgent parcels, spare parts, small electronics and commercial samples.
  • Charging: on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: air freight starts from SAR 14 per kilogram, and documents by express from SAR 83.
  • When land suits better: above 50 kilograms, land is far cheaper, starting from SAR 5.5 per kilogram.
  • What it does not suit: furniture, large appliances, liquids and loose batteries.

Details are on the air freight page.

Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns

We pack and load at your location, in any district of Riyadh: north, east, west and south. We also collect from nearby towns, and their shipments join the Riyadh trip:

Town Distance from Riyadh Note
Diriyah and Muzahimiyah Up to 60 km Collected on the same day as Riyadh
Al-Kharj About 80 km On the same road, so loaded on the way
Haradh About 280 km On the same road
Qassim About 350 km Brought to Riyadh, then added to the trip

If your home in Oman is not ready yet, we store your shipment in our warehouse, packed and inventoried, until you set the date. Details are on the storage page, and in the article international shipping company in Riyadh.

Steps for shipping from Riyadh to Oman

  1. Contact: you send what you are shipping with photos, your district in Riyadh, and your town in Oman.
  2. Itemised price: it reaches you by line: dismantling, packing, transport, clearance and assembly.
  3. Booking: we fix the loading day and the best road for your destination, and ask for copies of the documents.
  4. Packing and loading: at your home, with a numbered list of contents and photos.
  5. Export clearance: at the Saudi border post.
  6. Omani clearance: at Ramlat Khaliya or the entry post from the Emirates.
  7. Delivery: to the address, with unloading and assembly if you asked for it.

Tracking, insurance and support

On a road where coverage drops out in some sections, it matters to know when to expect the next update. From the moment of loading you have one person in charge whose name and number you know, who updates you at every stage: leaving Riyadh, reaching the border, completing Omani clearance, and the time of arrival at your door.

  • Tracking: by shipment number, with an update at every stage. Details are on the track your shipment page.
  • Record: photos of every item before packing and after loading.
  • Insurance: optional, calculated as a percentage of the declared value, and we recommend it on this route because the road is long. Details are on the cargo insurance page.
  • On receipt: inspect the shipment and note any remark on the delivery report before signing.

Shipping from Oman to Riyadh

The route works in both directions. We collect from the address in Oman through our crew there, clear at both posts, and deliver to any district of Riyadh. A Saudi returning from work in the Sultanate brings in his used furniture exempt with a list of contents. Goods of Omani origin enter the Kingdom with no duty on a certificate of origin.

How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Oman?

What you ask about Reassuring sign Warning sign
Route Asks for your town, then sets the border post Does not know where the truck enters
Time 3 to 7 days depending on the method and town “Within 48 hours” for a home’s furniture to Muscat
Price Itemised lines after knowing the volume and town One figure for every town in Oman
Customs Asks: used or new? And what is the origin of the goods? “No customs and no tax” on everything
Delivery A crew in Oman that unloads and assembles Its role ends at the border
Registration Commercial registration and a collection receipt A mobile number only

Common mistakes when shipping to Oman

  • Loading furniture without an inventory, so it is delayed at a border far from everything.
  • Light packing that does not withstand the road’s sand and heat.
  • Shipping Saudi goods without a certificate of origin, so duty is charged.
  • Shipping a car older than can be registered.
  • Comparing a Muscat price with a Salalah price as if they were one destination.
  • An address without the wilayat or without an Omani mobile number.
  • Choosing the cheapest figure without asking what it covers.
