Who ships from Riyadh to Qatar, and what do they ship?

Between Riyadh and Doha there are families joined by marriage, employees moving between company branches, and traders supplying the Qatari market every week. So shipments on this route are not alike: a carton of clothes for a daughter studying in Doha, a villa’s furniture for a family moving for work, and pallets of building materials for a contractor. Each type has a method that suits it, and knowing your type of shipment is the first thing that sets the price and the time.

Shipper What they ship Most suitable method
A family moving to Qatar A full home’s furniture and appliances Full truck with dismantling and assembly
A relocating employee or a newlywed A bedroom or sitting room and cartons Shared load
Someone sending to family Cartons, suitcases and gifts Parcels by land, door to door
A trader or factory Goods on pallets or a full truck By the pallet or the truck, with a certificate of origin
A car owner An ordinary or luxury car Shared or enclosed carrier
Companies, government bodies and embassies Office furniture, equipment and exhibitions A dedicated truck on a set date

Route and transit time from Riyadh to Qatar

Qatar has a land border with one country, the Kingdom, and one crossing: Salwa on the Saudi side and Abu Samra on the Qatari side. So every truck leaving Riyadh takes the same road: east to Al-Ahsa, then south-east to Salwa on the Gulf coast. After the crossing, about 100 km of motorway remain to Doha. The whole road is dual carriageway with service stations, and the drive takes 6 to 7 hours.

Stage Approximate distance What happens
Riyadh → Al-Ahsa About 330 km Motorway; Al-Ahsa shipments join here if there are any
Al-Ahsa → Salwa border post About 150 km Reaching the post and completing export
Abu Samra border post — Qatari clearance and inspection
Abu Samra → Doha About 100 km Distribution to the addresses
Method Door-to-door time Suits
Full truck 2–3 days A full home’s furniture and goods
Shared load 3–5 days One or two rooms, and a few pallets
Car carrier 2–4 days Cars
Parcels by land 3–5 days Cartons and suitcases
Air One to two days Documents and urgent parcels

The gap between driving hours and shipping days goes on three things: a day for dismantling, packing and loading in Riyadh, hours for clearance at the two posts, and a day for unloading and assembly in Qatar. Anyone who promises a whole home’s furniture within 24 hours of the order is not counting these stages.

What lengthens the time?

  • Congestion at the post: before Eid, holidays and major events in Doha the truck queues at Salwa grow longer.
  • A vague list of contents: “household items” with no detail brings a full manual inspection.
  • Goods without a certificate of origin: they are treated as foreign and duty is charged.
  • Waiting for consolidation: a shared load waits for the truck to fill.
  • The compound’s permit: towers in The Pearl, Lusail and West Bay require the service lift to be booked and an entry permit for the truck.

Shipping prices from Riyadh to Qatar

The price on this route follows three things: how much of the truck your shipment takes, whether you want the truck to yourself or share it, and which services you ask for at both ends. These are the prices our services start from, from your door in Riyadh to the consignee’s door in Qatar:

What you ship Method Price starts from
Parcel up to 5 kg Land freight, door to door SAR 90
Carton Land freight SAR 140
Suitcase Land freight SAR 230
Pallet of goods or a cubic metre Shared load SAR 550
A few pieces of furniture Shared load SAR 920
Bedroom Shared load SAR 1,650
Small flat’s furniture Shared load or small truck SAR 2,750
Three-room flat’s furniture Truck SAR 3,220
Villa’s furniture Full truck SAR 6,350
Small car Shared carrier SAR 1,100
4×4 Shared carrier SAR 1,750
Luxury car Enclosed carrier SAR 3,500

Prices quoted in the market for this route are higher than that on most lines: a bedroom between SAR 1,800 and 2,500, a three-room flat’s furniture between SAR 3,500 and 5,800, a villa from SAR 6,900, and a small car on a carrier between SAR 1,450 and 3,200. So use the table as a point of comparison for any offer you receive, and always ask what the figure covers.

What sets the price Its effect
Volume The first factor. Work it out with the volume calculator
Full truck or shared Full is faster and dearer; shared means you pay for your space only
Dismantling, packing and assembly Lines stated in the offer, not added after it
Floor and lift In Riyadh and in Qatar, and whether a hoist is needed
Area in Qatar Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Wakrah are nearer; Al Khor and Al Shamal farther
Season Summer and the end of the school year see higher demand

How do you lower the cost?

  • Choose a shared load if your date is not pressing.
  • Do not ship what costs less in Doha than its transport, such as old wardrobes and worn mattresses.
  • Gather your cartons into one shipment instead of sending them in batches.
  • Book at least two weeks before summer.
  • Send clear photos of everything you ship; an accurate estimate prevents a price difference on loading day.

Shipping furniture and household goods from Riyadh to Qatar

Packing furniture in Riyadh before shipping it to Doha

Furniture going to Qatar travels about 600 km and passes two border posts, and part of it may be opened for inspection and closed again. So packing that is enough for a move inside Riyadh is not enough here. We pack on the assumption that every piece will be loaded and unloaded more than once, and that the road has heat and dust.

  • Dismantling: bedrooms, wardrobes and kitchens are dismantled and their parts numbered, with the screws in bags taped to them.
  • Packing: blankets then corrugated cardboard for wood, foam and wooden crates for glass and marble, and wrap for sofas and mattresses.
  • Appliances: the fridge and washing machine are emptied and dried a day before. Qatar’s supply is 240 volts with the same plugs as the Kingdom, so your appliances work there without an adapter.
  • Air conditioners: removed with the gas pumped down into the outdoor unit, and the two units packed separately.
  • Inventory: a numbered list of every carton and piece, which is what goes to Qatari customs.
  • Assembly: our crew in Qatar unloads, assembles and removes the packing waste.

Service details are on the furniture shipping page, and packing methods in the packing guide.

Packing: what we use for each piece

Most damage in land freight does not come from an accident, but from one piece rubbing against another over the hours of the road. So the idea is not to wrap everything in plastic, but to choose for each piece what keeps scratching, pressure and vibration away from it.

Piece Packing Note
Wood and wardrobes Blanket then corrugated cardboard and corner guards Doors and shelves are removed
Sofas and mattresses Thick plastic wrap and mattress bags Keeps out dust and damp
Glass, mirrors and marble Foam then a wooden crate Carried upright, not flat
Screens Their original carton or a special one Loaded upright above heavy items
Crockery and ornaments Paper and dividers in a double-wall carton “Fragile” is written on the carton
Clothes and books Medium cartons No carton over 30 kg

Full truck or shared load?

This is the first decision that changes both price and time. With a full truck, the truck moves on your loading day and stops only at your door in Qatar. With a shared load, your shipment waits for the truck to fill with other people’s shipments, and each is then unloaded at its owner’s address. The practical rule: under three rooms a shared load is enough, and above that a full truck becomes cheaper per metre.

Comparison Shared load Full truck
You pay for Your shipment’s space only The whole truck
Time 3–5 days 2–3 days
Departure Once the truck is full On loading day
Handling May be moved between two trucks Loaded once and unloaded once
Best for Up to about three rooms A full home or a lot of goods

Shipping parcels, suitcases and appliances

Not every shipment to Qatar is furniture. Many of our customers send a carton to a relative, an appliance bought in Riyadh, or suitcases that travel ahead of their owner. These go with the weekly land trips door to door, which is far cheaper than shipping by the kilogram once the weight passes a few kilograms.

  • Parcels: up to 5 kg from SAR 90, delivered to the consignee’s door.
  • Cartons: double-wall from SAR 140, none over 30 kg.
  • Suitcases: from SAR 230, wrapped and numbered.
  • Electronics: in the original carton if available, and new ones are declared with their invoice.
  • Valuables: declared at their value and insured.

Details are on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to Qatar

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are in one customs union. So goods of Saudi origin cross with no customs duty, provided a valid certificate of origin travels with them. This is what makes land freight from Riyadh the choice of the central region’s factories and suppliers to the Qatari market: a truck loaded in the evening is at the border the next morning.

  • Units: by the pallet or cubic metre in a shared load, and by the truck for quantities.
  • Certificate of origin: for Saudi and Gulf goods, and it is what exempts them from duty.
  • Foreign goods: they carry the unified Gulf duty of 5% if it was not paid when they entered the Gulf. If it was, the clearing document proves it so it is not paid twice.
  • Electronic clearance: the declaration is filed in advance through the Fasah platform in the Kingdom and the Al Nadeeb system in Qatar, so the truck arrives with its file ready.
  • Foodstuffs: with a label and expiry date, and chilled items in a refrigerated truck.
  • Regular supply: fixed weekly trips for those who ship periodically.

Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Shipping for individuals, companies, government bodies and embassies

The shipment looks the same, but what each customer needs from it differs. An individual wants a clear price and assembly at home. A company wants a tax invoice and a date that does not move. An official body wants letters and delivery against a signed record. We arrange the service on that basis:

Customer What matters to them What we provide
Individuals and families Safe furniture and a price with no surprises A photo survey, dismantling, packing and assembly, and an itemised price
Companies and factories The date and the documents A dedicated truck, tax invoices, and periodic trips under contract
Government bodies Official procedure and records Letters, a collection and delivery record, and sealed packing for files
Embassies and missions Privacy and diplomatic exemptions Coordinating exemption documents, and delivery inside the premises
Exhibitions and events Arriving before the opening and returning after it Shipping to a date, and temporary admission for exhibits when needed

Shipping cars from Riyadh to Qatar

A car is carried to Qatar on a carrier, not driven, unless its owner wants to drive it himself on export plates. The advantage of a carrier is that the car arrives with no added kilometres and no road risk. The choice between open and enclosed follows the car’s value, not the distance:

Car and carrier How it works Price starts from
Small car on a shared carrier Carries several cars and moves when full SAR 1,100
4×4 on a shared carrier A wider space and more weight SAR 1,750
Luxury car in an enclosed carrier A closed box that protects from dust and stones SAR 3,500
  • Export from the Kingdom: paying fines, then the export certificate from the traffic department and surrendering the plates.
  • Age condition: the rule in practice in Qatar is that a light vehicle must be no more than 5 years old from the year of manufacture, and a heavy one no more than 10. We confirm what applies to your car before shipping.
  • Customs duty: 5% of the car’s value if its duty has not been paid in the Gulf before. The clearing document proves earlier payment.
  • Specifications: a Gulf-spec car is easier to register, and others may need testing or modification.
  • An empty car: no personal items are left inside, and the fuel stays at a quarter.

Details are on the car shipping page.

The Salwa and Abu Samra posts and Qatari customs

Trucks shipping from Riyadh to Qatar at the Salwa border post

Every shipment goes through two clearances: export at Salwa, and import at Abu Samra. Both are quick when the papers are complete, and both stop at the first missing paper. And because there is one crossing, there is no alternative if the truck is held up there. That is why we prepare the file in Riyadh before the truck moves, and send a copy to our broker at the border.

Type of shipment Charges in Qatar Documents
Used furniture and belongings Exempt for someone moving to live there ID or Iqama, the consignee’s residence permit or Qatari ID, and a detailed list of contents
Goods of Saudi or Gulf origin Exempt Invoice, packing list and certificate of origin
Foreign goods 5% if not paid before Invoice, packing list, and the clearing document if duty was paid
Car 5% if not paid before Registration, export certificate, owner’s ID, and the clearing document
Personal parcels Exempt within personal use Description and value of the contents, and the consignee’s address and number

If you are not present on the crossing day, an authorisation for the broker issued electronically before travel is enough. The documents are explained on the required documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Qatar or needs a permit

Item Rule
Alcohol, drugs and pork Prohibited
Weapons, ammunition and fireworks Prohibited or by licence
E-cigarettes and their liquids Prohibited in Qatar
Medicines Personal quantities with a prescription
Drones and radio equipment By prior permit
Flammables and gas cylinders Not loaded with furniture
Cash, gold and original documents Not shipped with furniture; keep them with you
Counterfeit goods Confiscated

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Delivery in Doha and the municipalities of Qatar

Delivering shipments in Doha and Lusail

Qatar is small in area, and its farthest town is no more than two and a half hours from the border. So delivery takes place on the crossing day itself or the day after. We deliver in every municipality:

Municipality Main areas Distance from Abu Samra
Doha West Bay, The Pearl, Al Sadd, Al Mansoura, Old Airport About 100 km
Al Rayyan Al Gharrafa, Muaither, Ain Khaled, Industrial Area About 90 km
Al Wakrah Al Wakrah, Al Wukair, Mesaieed About 100 km
Al Daayen Lusail, Al Kheesa About 120 km
Umm Salal Umm Salal Mohammed, Al Kharaitiyat About 120 km
Al Shahaniya Al Shahaniya, Dukhan 80–110 km
Al Khor and Al Thakhira Al Khor, Ras Laffan About 150 km
Al Shamal Madinat Al Shamal, Al Ruwais About 200 km

An address in Qatar is written with three numbers: zone, street and building, shown on the blue plate at every door. Send them to us with a Qatari mobile number, and mention the floor and whether the building has a service lift. Destination details are on the shipping to Qatar page.

Is there sea freight from Riyadh to Qatar?

Riyadh is an inland city, and its nearest port is King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. From there containers sail to Hamad Port south of Doha in a day or two. But with haulage to the port, waiting for the vessel and clearance at both ends, the time becomes 7 to 12 days, several times longer than by land. So sea freight only suits heavy commercial containers whose owner is in no hurry. For furniture, parcels and cars, land is faster and cheaper. The full comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Air freight from Riyadh to Qatar

Air freight from Riyadh to Doha

The flight from King Khalid Airport to Hamad International Airport is about an hour and a quarter, and the shipment arrives within one to two days including clearance at both airports. It is the choice for those who cannot wait three days: a document for a transaction, a spare part that work depends on, or a sample for a customer.

  • For whom: documents, urgent parcels, spare parts and commercial samples.
  • Charging: on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: air freight starts from SAR 14 per kilogram, and documents by express from SAR 83.
  • When land suits better: above 50 kilograms, land is far cheaper and the difference is only a day or two.
  • What it does not suit: furniture, large appliances, liquids and loose batteries.

Details are on the air freight page.

Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns

We pack and load at your location, in any district of Riyadh: north, east, west and south. We also collect from nearby towns, and their shipments join the Riyadh trip:

Town Distance from Riyadh Note
Diriyah and Muzahimiyah Up to 60 km Collected on the same day as Riyadh
Al-Kharj About 80 km Collected the day before loading
Al-Ahsa About 330 km On the same road, so loaded on the way
Qassim About 350 km Brought to Riyadh, then added to the trip

If your home in Qatar is not ready yet, we store your shipment in our warehouse, packed and inventoried, until you set the date. Details are on the storage page, and in the article international shipping company in Riyadh.

Tracking, insurance and support

The road is short, but you do not need to guess where your shipment is. From the moment of loading you have one person in charge whose name and number you know, who updates you at every stage: leaving Riyadh, reaching Salwa, completing Qatari clearance, and the time of arrival at your door.

  • Tracking: by shipment number, with an update at every stage. Details are on the track your shipment page.
  • Record: photos of every item before packing and after loading.
  • Insurance: optional, calculated as a percentage of the declared value. Details are on the cargo insurance page.
  • On receipt: inspect the shipment and note any remark on the delivery report before signing.

Shipping from Qatar to Riyadh

The route works in both directions. We collect from the address in Qatar through our crew there, clear at both posts, and deliver to any district of Riyadh. A Saudi returning from work in Qatar brings in his used furniture exempt with a list of contents. Goods of Qatari origin enter the Kingdom with no duty on a certificate of origin.

Tips before shipping to Qatar

  • Start arranging two weeks before the travel date, and three before summer.
  • Set aside what you will carry yourself: passports, contracts, gold and medicines.
  • Check the size of the flat door and the lift in Qatar before shipping large sofas and wardrobes.
  • Ask the compound’s management about permitted unloading hours and booking the service lift.
  • Photograph appliances while they are working before disconnecting them.
  • Keep a copy of the list of contents on your phone.

  • Shipping Saudi goods without a certificate of origin, so duty is charged.
  • Shipping a car older than allowed, so it is turned back at the border.

  • Choosing the cheapest figure without asking what it covers.
