Who ships a car from Jeddah to Qatar?

The Jeddah – Doha line is one of the longest car-transport routes inside the Gulf, since it crosses the Kingdom from its western coast to its eastern border. That is why few people drive it and many hand the car to a carrier and fly in two and a quarter hours. Car owners on this route fall into five groups, each with a carrier that suits it and one paper it asks about before any other.

The owner What is shipped The right carrier The first question
An employee or resident whose job has moved to Doha The family car Shared open carrier Whether its age is accepted for registration in Qatar
A seller or buyer through platforms and showrooms A car sold to a buyer in Qatar Open carrier or single flatbed The export certificate and the lender’s release
A showroom or car dealer in Jeddah Several cars in one trip A whole carrier with its full load A price per load and a fixed date
The owner of a luxury or classic car A car for a show, an event or a collection Enclosed with a horizontal lift Insurance for the value of the car
A motorcycle or touring enthusiast A motorcycle or an expedition vehicle A flatbed or a crate inside a truck Securing and temporary entry

For our part, we ask two things before quoting a price: whether the car will stay in Qatar or come back, and whether it moves under its own power. The first answer decides the traffic and customs paperwork, and the second decides how it is loaded.

The car shipping route from Jeddah to Qatar and how long it takes

The carrier leaves Jeddah eastwards towards Makkah and then climbs to Taif by the Al-Sail road, because trucks do not use the Al-Hada mountain road. From Taif it takes the motorway to Riyadh, the longest stretch of the journey, close to 950 km from Jeddah. It then heads for Al-Ahsa and the Salwa post on the Gulf of Salwa, crosses to Abu Samra, and has about 100 km left to Doha. Our drivers cover this road every week, and they know the safe overnight stops for carriers and the quiet hours at the border.

The road from Jeddah to Qatar via the Salwa – Abu Samra crossing
Stage What happens How long
Collection in Jeddah A photographed inspection, a signed condition report and loading onto the flatbed One to two hours
Consolidation at the carrier yard The car waits for the shared carrier’s load to be complete One to 3 days
Jeddah to Riyadh Via Al-Sail and Taif on the motorway One day
Riyadh to Salwa Via Al-Ahsa, with a rest stop for the driver Half a day
Crossing from Salwa to Abu Samra A Saudi export declaration, then a Qatari import declaration and inspection Half a day to two days
Delivery in Qatar Unloading at the address, inspection and handover of the key On the day of crossing or the next

The total time depends on the type of carrier more than on the distance, because the whole difference lies in the waiting before departure:

Type of carrier Door-to-door time Why
Single-car flatbed 2–4 days It leaves as soon as it is loaded and waits for no other car
Enclosed carrier 3–6 days It takes one to three cars and fills sooner
Shared open carrier 4–7 days It waits for both decks to fill, then distributes the cars in Qatar

What makes it take longer? Four things, as a rule: an unpaid traffic fine that holds up the export certificate, a financed car whose release letter has not arrived, queues at the border at weekends and on public holidays, and an address in Qatar with no zone, street and building number. All of them are dealt with before loading, not at the border. The schedule for every destination is on the transit times page.

Car shipping prices from Jeddah to Qatar

The rate for moving a car is set by three things: the size of the car, the type of carrier, and whether it shares the trip or has it to itself. A saloon takes one space on the carrier, a 4×4 takes a longer space and weighs more, and a low car needs slower loading. These are the prices our service starts from, door in Jeddah to door in Qatar:

Vehicle Carrier Price starts from
Saloon or hatchback Shared open SAR 2,020
4×4 or large family car Shared open SAR 2,570
Sports or electric car Shared open SAR 3,220
Saloon Enclosed with lift SAR 3,860
4×4 Enclosed with lift SAR 4,600
High-value sports or electric car Enclosed with lift SAR 5,520
Classic car Enclosed with lift Set on request
Any car on an immediate date Single flatbed Set on request
Motorcycle or non-running car Flatbed or crate Set on request
Urgent car Air freight Set on request

The prices quoted in the market for this route are higher than our table. A saloon on an open flatbed is offered at between SAR 2,200 and 2,800, a 4×4 at between SAR 2,800 and 3,500, and sports and electric cars at between SAR 3,500 and 4,500. In an enclosed carrier the offers rise to between SAR 4,200 and 5,500 for a saloon, between SAR 5,000 and 6,500 for a 4×4, and between SAR 6,000 and 8,000 for a sports car. Some price the whole route at between SAR 3,500 and 7,000 depending on the class of car, and air freight for a car is offered from SAR 11,000. So use the table above as the yardstick for any quote you receive.

Factor How it changes the price
Size and weight of the car A longer, heavier car takes the space of a car and a half on the carrier
Type of carrier An enclosed carrier takes fewer cars, so each car bears a larger share of the cost
Sharing or travelling alone A single flatbed pays for the whole road by itself
Condition of the car A non-runner needs a winch and more time to load and unload
Collection and delivery points A narrow district in Jeddah or a distant town in northern Qatar adds a leg
Season Demand rises before the Eids, at the start of summer and at the end of the school year

How do you bring the cost down? Book a week ahead of your date so you catch a shared carrier instead of a single flatbed. Put your car together with that of a relative or colleague who is moving with you, because two cars on one carrier cost less than two trips. And finish the traffic paperwork before booking so you pay no waiting charge. All the factors are explained on the pricing factors page.

What is particular about shipping cars from Jeddah?

Jeddah is the farthest of the major Saudi cities from Qatar, and that changes the whole calculation. From Riyadh or Al-Ahsa many people drive to Doha in half a day, whereas from Jeddah it is two days of continuous driving. Shipping here is not a luxury; it is the usual choice for anyone who does not want to begin life in Qatar with a car worn out by the road.

Jeddah is also a city of a port and of showrooms. Many imported cars enter the Kingdom through Jeddah Islamic Port, and its showrooms sell to buyers from the Gulf, so part of what we carry is new or nearly new cars that go straight from the showroom onto the carrier. The humid, salty coastal air also makes owners of classic cars in Jeddah keener than most on an enclosed carrier.

  • Truck hours: the movement of large trucks inside Jeddah is restricted at peak hours, so the long carrier loads at a yard on the edge of the city and a small flatbed fetches the car from the district.
  • The Ramadan and Hajj seasons: the Jeddah – Makkah road is congested, so we move loading times to the night or leave by an alternative road.
  • The Taif road: carriers take the Al-Sail road because the Al-Hada pass is closed to trucks, and we allow for that in the timing.
  • Cars coming from the port: a car that has been cleared in Jeddah but not yet registered travels on its customs declaration, and its papers differ from those of a car already on plates.

Anyone shipping furniture or parcels along with the car will find the details in the article on international shipping companies in Jeddah, since this page is about cars alone.

Types of carrier: open, enclosed or a single flatbed?

Three kinds of vehicle carry cars on this route, and all of them reach the same door in Doha. They differ in how much the car is exposed to on the road, in the waiting time and in the rate. The rule we work by is simple: the value of the car chooses the carrier, and the date chooses between sharing and travelling alone.

Option How it works Suits What you give up
Open multi-car transporter Two decks taking six to eight cars, loaded by ramps Family and everyday cars and showroom loads The car is exposed to dust and sun, and waits for the load to fill
Enclosed carrier A box with walls and a roof, a horizontal lift and straps over the tyres Luxury, sports, classic and low-slung cars A higher rate, because the box takes few cars
Single covered flatbed A flat truck carrying one car from door to door An urgent date, narrow districts and a non-running car You pay for the whole trip yourself

A car on an open carrier is not wrapped in a fabric cover, because a cover flaps in the wind on the motorway and scratches the paint. Protection there comes from a clear adhesive film on the front for those who ask for it, and from placing the car on the upper deck, away from stones thrown up by tyres. The full comparison of the methods is in the car shipping guide.

The vehicles we carry from Jeddah to Qatar

Each vehicle has its own way of being loaded and secured, and a wrong choice shows at unloading in Doha, not at loading in Jeddah. So before we name the carrier we ask about the ground clearance of the car, its weight and any modification to its body or suspension.

Vehicle How it travels What we watch for
Saloon and hatchback Shared open carrier All four tyres strapped, and the gearbox left in park
4×4 and large family car Open carrier, lower deck Overall height with the roof rack, and the axle load
Luxury and low sports car Enclosed with a horizontal lift The approach angle, so the front bumper never touches the floor
Electric and hybrid Open or enclosed Battery at about half charge, and no towing on the driven wheels
Classic Enclosed only A soft cover, securing by the tyres and no tension on the chassis
Pickup and light commercial Open carrier or flatbed An empty load bed, and weight within the carrier’s limit
Motorcycle A base or crate inside a truck Straps on the handlebars and frame, and a nearly empty tank
Non-running car Flatbed with a winch That the wheels turn and the steering responds; otherwise special lifting gear is needed

The general service is described on the car shipping page, and the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia sets out the other destinations.

Shipping classic and luxury cars from Jeddah to Qatar in an enclosed carrier

A classic car’s parts cannot be replaced, and its original paint is part of its value. The road from Jeddah to Doha crosses open sandy country between Riyadh and Al-Ahsa and at Salwa, and wind-blown sand does to old paint what years in a garage never would. So we carry a classic car only in a closed box, even when its owner asks for the cheapest option.

Shipping classic cars from Jeddah to Qatar in an enclosed carrier
  • Horizontal lift: the car stands on a level platform that rises with it to the height of the box, so it climbs no ramp and nothing touches its underside.
  • Soft cover: a breathable indoor fabric cover that keeps dust off without trapping moisture against the metal.
  • Secured by the tyres: wide straps go round all four wheels, so the suspension stays free and the chassis is not pulled.
  • Side clearance: no car is loaded tight against another, and the doors open inside the box without touching the wall.
  • Closer documentation: photographs of the paint under direct light, of the chassis and engine numbers, and of the interior and the odometer.

A modern luxury car gets the same treatment, with its electronic transport mode switched on where it has one, so the alarm does not go off and the automatic parking brake does not engage on the road.

Preparing the car before loading

Preparing the car takes its owner an hour and saves everyone a day at the border. It serves three purposes: that the condition of the car shows clearly in the collection report, that nothing in it gives the customs inspector cause to object, and that it moves at unloading without surprises.

  • Washing: wash the outside the day before collection, because a small scratch cannot be seen under dust and will not be written into the report.
  • Fuel: a quarter of a tank is enough for loading and unloading, and a full tank is extra weight for no benefit.
  • Personal belongings: take everything out of the cabin and the boot, and leave the spare wheel and the jack kit.
  • Odometer and photographs: photograph the odometer reading, the four sides, the roof and the interior; we photograph it as well and send you the copy.
  • Alarm and accessories: switch off the alarm, remove a retractable aerial and any loose roof rack, and fold the mirrors.
  • Battery and tyres: a charged battery and correct tyre pressure, so the car comes off under its own power in Doha.
  • Keys: one key travels with the car, and the second stays with you.

Tell us about any oil leak or brake fault as well, because a car that leaks goes on the lower deck so it does not soil what is beneath it.

Exporting the car through the Jeddah Traffic Department

A car that will be registered in Qatar first has to leave the Saudi vehicle register. The procedure is carried out at the Traffic Department in Jeddah in the name of the owner or his agent, and it ends with an export certificate and temporary export plates that replace the original ones. The steps in force are as follows, and at the time of the request we confirm with you which of them apply and what can be done online through Absher:

Step What is required Note
Clearing fines Payment of every fine recorded against the vehicle and the owner Any outstanding fine stops the request
Finance release A letter from the bank or finance company lifting the lien on the car Only for financed or finance-leased cars
Export request The registration and the owner’s ID or the agent’s authorisation Submitted to the Traffic Department
Surrendering the plates Handing in the two original plates and receiving export plates For a fee paid with the request
Export certificate A document with the details of the car and the owner, presented to customs It stays with the car until it is registered in Qatar

Once the export plates are issued, the car is given a fixed period in which to leave the Kingdom, and the Traffic Department has stated that it is two months from the date of export. So do not begin the procedure before you have booked the carrier, and do not leave it to loading day. If you appoint us, we follow the transaction step by step; if you complete it yourself, send us a copy of the certificate before collection.

The Salwa – Abu Samra crossing: documents and clearance

The carrier stops at the border twice: once before Saudi customs at Salwa to record the exit of the cars, and once before Qatari customs at Abu Samra to bring them in. Each car on the carrier has a file of its own, so if one file is incomplete, that car is taken off to wait and the rest carry on. That is why we check each car’s file in Jeddah before it goes up.

Document Issued by When it is needed
Valid vehicle registration (istimara) Saudi Traffic Department In every case
Export certificate and export plates Saudi Traffic Department For a permanent exit
Owner’s ID or residence permit, and a clearance authorisation The owner In every case
Finance release letter The bank or finance company For a financed car
Invoice or sale contract The seller For a car that has been sold; the duty is calculated on it
Maqassa document Customs To prove the duty on the car was paid in the Gulf before
Recipient’s Qatar ID or residence permit The Qatari authorities For permanent registration

The customs declaration is filed electronically before the carrier arrives, so it reaches the post with the transaction already open. Anyone who will not be present on the day of crossing need only authorise our broker. The remaining details are on the shipping documents and customs clearance pages.

Conditions for importing and registering a car in Qatar

Clearance at Abu Samra is one thing, and registering the car on Qatari plates is another. The first is handled by customs and we complete it with the broker; the second is a traffic transaction the owner finishes after taking delivery. These are the rules in force, and some of them change, so we confirm what applies to your car before its plates are surrendered in Jeddah:

Item The rule in force
Customs duty 5% of the value assessed by customs, waived with the Maqassa document if it was paid in the Gulf before
Age of the car A light vehicle no more than five years from its date of manufacture, a heavy vehicle ten years
Steering and specification Left-hand drive and compliance with safety and emissions standards; Gulf-specification cars are accepted more easily
Technical inspection A roadworthiness test at the Fahes centres before registration
Insurance A valid Qatari insurance policy, which is available at the Abu Samra post
Status of the owner A valid Qatar ID or residence permit, for the car to be registered in his name

After registration, the car’s transactions, such as renewals and fines, are managed through the Metrash app of the Qatari Ministry of Interior, as far as the app provides. We do not accept a car damaged in a serious accident or a flood for registration, because rejection at the test means a return fare. Destination information is on the shipping to Qatar page.

Temporary entry on your Saudi plates, or permanent export?

Not every car that crosses Salwa is an exported car. Someone visiting Qatar for a few weeks, or taking part in a show or a race, brings the car in on its Saudi plates and registration and takes it back. Someone relocating or selling the car needs a permanent export. Confusing the two is what unsettles car owners on this route more than anything else.

Point of comparison Temporary entry Permanent export
Plates The Saudi plates stay on the car They are surrendered and export plates fitted
Customs duty Not collected as long as the car will return 5% if it has not been paid before
Age condition Does not apply to a visiting car Applies at registration
What is needed A valid registration, insurance covering Qatar, and the owner present or a notarised authorisation for the driver The export certificate, the finance release and the recipient’s ID
Length of stay Limited to what the Qatari authorities allow Permanent after registration

Shipping is still useful for a temporary entry: the owner flies from Jeddah and finds the car in Doha, and a show car arrives with no added kilometres and no dust. For a car continuing to a country outside the Gulf, a customs carnet is required, and it is explained on the triptik and carnet page.

Protecting the car, insurance and tracking during transport

Three things protect a car on a road 1,500 km long: correct securing, documentation nobody can dispute, and financial cover if the unforeseen happens. Securing is the driver’s job, documentation is shared with the owner, and insurance is a decision taken before loading, not after.

  • Securing: straps over all four tyres and chocks in front of and behind the wheels, tightened again at every long stop.
  • Condition report: a list of every existing scratch and dent, signed by you and the driver, with dated photographs and video.
  • Carrier’s liability: it applies to every car loaded, it is capped, and it covers what happens through a fault in loading or driving.
  • Transit insurance: an optional policy for the declared value of the car, which we recommend for luxury and classic cars. It is explained on the cargo insurance page.
  • Tracking: the carrier’s position by satellite, and a message at four points: leaving Jeddah, passing Riyadh, reaching Salwa and exiting Abu Samra.
  • Photographs en route: a picture of the car on the carrier at the border for anyone who asks, before and after the customs inspection.

The Saudi motor insurance you renew every year does not cover the car as cargo on a transporter, nor does it replace Qatari insurance after arrival. You can follow the journey on the shipment tracking page with the booking number.

Delivering cars in Doha and the cities of Qatar

After Abu Samra the distances become short, since the farthest Qatari town is no more than two and a half hours from the post. A shared carrier unloads its cars at a yard near Doha, and from there each car goes on a small flatbed to its address, because a transporter twenty metres long cannot enter the streets of residential districts and tower blocks. A single flatbed and an enclosed carrier go straight to the door.

Delivering cars from Jeddah in Doha
City Main delivery areas Distance from Abu Samra
Doha West Bay, Al Dafna, Al Sadd, Al Hilal, The Pearl, Mesaimeer About 100 km
Al Rayyan Al Gharrafa, Muaither, Ain Khaled, the Industrial Area About 90 km
Al Wakrah and Mesaieed Al Wakrah, Al Wukair, Mesaieed Industrial City About 100 km
Lusail and Al Daayen Lusail, Al Kheesa, the waterfront towers About 120 km
Umm Salal Umm Salal Mohammed, Al Kharaitiyat About 120 km
Al Shahaniya Al Shahaniya, Dukhan 80–110 km
Al Khor and the north Al Khor, Ras Laffan, Al Ruwais 150–200 km

Delivery is an inspection before it is a signature. You walk round the car with the driver, holding the report written in Jeddah, compare the odometer with its photograph, and then take the key. In the towers of West Bay and Al Dafna we agree with the building management a time for the flatbed to enter the car park. A Qatari address is written with three numbers, zone, street and building, together with a Qatari mobile number.

Drive the car yourself or ship it?

Everyone with a sound car and a valid licence asks this. The answer depends on the reason for the journey, not on courage behind the wheel. From Jeddah to Doha is about 16 hours of driving without a stop, and with breaks and a night’s rest it becomes two days. Here is what each choice costs and involves:

Point of comparison Driving it yourself Shipping it on a carrier
Time Two days of your time on the road Two and a quarter hours by plane, and the car follows you
Cost Fuel, a night’s stay, food and a return ticket if needed A rate known from the start
Odometer and wear 1,500 km added, plus tyres and oil Not a kilometre added
Risks Fatigue, drifting sand and stray camels at night A dedicated driver and carrier’s liability
The border You queue yourself and complete your own papers A broker completes them in your absence
Suits A short family visit after which you return A relocation, a sale, a valuable car or more than one car

Anyone with two cars drives one and ships the other, which is what many families do when they move.

Our services for individuals, companies, government bodies and embassies

The carrier is the same, but what surrounds it differs from one client to another. An individual wants a clear price and a date, a company wants an invoice and a schedule, and an official body wants letters and reports. We arrange for each what it needs without burdening it with someone else’s procedures.

  • Individuals: one car or two, booked by phone and paid for on collection or on delivery as agreed.
  • Showrooms and dealers: a whole carrier at a price per load, and a fixed schedule of trips for those who send every month.
  • Companies: moving the cars of relocating staff or of a project, with a contract, a tax invoice and a report for each car.
  • Government bodies: official vehicles on a letter from the body, with a stamped collection and delivery report.
  • Embassies and consulates: diplomatic cars with the foreign-ministry letters they require; we confirm the exemption procedure with the mission before shipping.
  • Organisers of shows and races: enclosed carriers with a set arrival date, and temporary entry for the cars taking part.

Anyone who needs the car kept for a few days before travelling or after arrival is given a place in a walled yard, on terms agreed at booking.

Is there sea freight for cars from Jeddah to Qatar?

In theory yes, and in practice we do not recommend it. Jeddah Islamic Port is on the Red Sea and Hamad Port is on the Arabian Gulf, and a ship between them sails right round the Arabian Peninsula through Bab al-Mandab, the Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz. A car therefore takes two to three weeks, with the wait for the vessel and clearance at both ports, while a road carrier arrives in days and at a lower rate. So on this route the sea is left to large commercial loads nobody is in a hurry for. The methods are compared on the shipping methods comparison page.

Air freight for cars from Jeddah to Qatar

Air freight for a car is an established service, and those who ask for it know why: a luxury car its owner wants in Doha before the weekend, a race car with a date at the circuit, or a rare car for which a day on the road is not acceptable. It leaves from King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, the flight to Hamad International Airport is about two and a quarter hours, and it is then delivered in Doha on an enclosed flatbed.

Air freight for cars from Jeddah to Qatar
  • Loading: the car is secured by its tyres to an air cargo pallet and goes into a freighter or the hold of a wide-body aircraft, depending on its dimensions.
  • Airline conditions: very little fuel in the tank, battery terminals protected and nothing inside the car, because a vehicle is classed as special cargo in air transport.
  • Electric cars: they carry extra requirements for the lithium battery, which we check with the air carrier before accepting the booking.
  • Duration: two to four days from collection to delivery, most of it in preparation and clearance, not in the air.
  • Price: set on request according to the weight, the dimensions and the flight available.
  • Paperwork: the same as for road transport, plus the air waybill and the shipper’s declaration.

The difference in cost between air and road is large, so we suggest air only when time is worth more than the fare. The service is described on the air freight page and in the article on the air freight office in Jeddah.

Collection from the districts of Jeddah and around it

We collect the car from wherever it stands: in front of the house, in the car park of the building, at the showroom, or from the port yard after it has been cleared. The small flatbed enters every district of Jeddah and takes the car to the consolidation yard if it is to travel on a shared carrier. For anyone outside Jeddah we send the flatbed, or the car is dropped at the yard.

Area Districts and sites Collection note
North Jeddah Obhur, Al-Shati, Al-Mohammadiyah, Al-Naeem, Al-Zahra, Al-Salamah, Al-Rawdah Wide streets, and collection at any agreed time
Central Jeddah Al-Hamra, Al-Andalus, Al-Aziziyah, Al-Faisaliyah, Al-Safa, Al-Marwah Best outside peak hours
South Jeddah and Al-Balad Al-Balad, Al-Jamiah, Al-Sanabel, Al-Khumrah, the car showrooms A small flatbed for the alleys, and direct loading from showrooms
East Jeddah Al-Samer, Al-Manar, Al-Ajwad, Al-Harazat Close to the exit for the Makkah road
The port and the airport Jeddah Islamic Port, the release yards, King Abdulaziz Airport With an entry permit and the car’s declaration
Around Jeddah Makkah, Taif, Bahrah, Dhahban, Thuwal, Rabigh, Al-Lith An extra leg charged by distance

The collection time is a two-hour window, not a fixed hour, because the flatbed picks up more than one car on its round. The collection and delivery service is described on the door-to-door shipping page.

Steps for shipping your car from Jeddah to Qatar

From the first call to the handover of the key there are eight steps, half of them paperwork and half of them road. Their order matters: the paper comes before the carrier, not the other way round.

  1. Call and describe the car: the make, model and condition, where it is in Jeddah, the delivery address in Qatar, and whether the exit is permanent or temporary.
  2. Receive the price and the date: a price by type of carrier, the collection date, and what the price includes and what it does not.
  3. Finish the traffic paperwork: payment of fines, the finance release and the export certificate if required, or appoint us to do it.
  4. Prepare the car: a wash, a quarter of a tank, belongings removed and photographs taken.
  5. Inspection and loading: a condition report signed by both parties, then the car is lifted and secured in front of you.
  6. The road and tracking: a message reaches you at each point as far as Salwa.
  7. Clearance at the two posts: the export declaration, then the import declaration and payment of the duty if it is due.
  8. Delivery: an inspection at your address in Qatar, a comparison with the report, then the key.

The booking form on the request a quote page shortens the first two steps for anyone who prefers writing to calling.

The line runs in both directions, and the carrier that delivers cars to Doha returns with cars for the Kingdom. We collect from the address in Qatar, clear at Abu Samra and Salwa, and deliver in any district of Jeddah. What differs in this direction is the conditions of entry into the Kingdom, and they are what we check before accepting the car.

  • Age of the car: the rule Saudi customs applies is that a light car imported for registration must be no more than five model years old.
  • What may not enter: a car damaged by flood, fire or a serious accident, former taxis and police cars, and cars converted from right-hand drive.
  • Heritage cars: one more than thirty years old may be imported for a collection, and may not be driven on public roads.
  • Duty: 5% unless the Maqassa document proves it was paid in Qatar, and the car must match the energy-efficiency certificate.
  • A temporary visit: a Gulf-plated car may stay in the Kingdom for a limited period in the year, and we confirm the period in force for anyone planning a long stay.

A Saudi returning with a car bought in Qatar needs a Qatari export certificate in place of the registration, and we ask for a copy of it before we send the flatbed.

Tips before shipping your car from Jeddah to Qatar

These tips come from cars that were delayed or sent back, and each of them prevents a particular problem on this route:

  • Ask about the age condition in Qatar before anything else, if the car is to be registered there.
  • Request the release letter from the bank early, as it is the slowest paper in the file.
  • Keep the Maqassa document or the car’s first import declaration if you have it, because it saves you the duty.
  • Do not surrender the plates until the carrier’s date is confirmed.
  • Have every old scratch written into the report, however small; it protects you and us.
  • Avoid loading in the days just before an Eid, when the queues at the border lengthen.
  • Arrange the car’s Qatari insurance before it arrives, so you can drive it from the day of delivery.
  • Give us the number of someone in Doha who can take delivery for you if your flight is delayed.

The full preparation checklist is in the car shipping guide.

Common mistakes when shipping cars from Jeddah to Qatar

  • Shipping a car older than Qatar’s registration limit as a permanent export, leaving it without plates in either country.
  • Leaving suitcases and appliances in the boot, so the car is searched and the items are held.
  • Handing the car over dusty, so the report records neither its old scratches nor new ones.
  • Choosing an open carrier for a low car whose bumper scrapes the ramp.
  • Assuming the transport price includes Qatari customs duty.
  • Starting the export procedure months before travelling, so the period of the export plates runs out.
  • Naming a recipient in Qatar who holds no valid ID card.

How do you choose a car shipping company from Jeddah to Qatar?

There are many offers on this route, and most come from intermediaries who own neither a carrier nor a broker. The difference does not show in the price; it shows at the first precise question. These signs separate a real carrier from someone selling a phone number:

Sign What to look for What should raise doubt
Registration A commercial registration and an establishment’s name on the contract A transfer to a personal account with no receipt
Condition report A written inspection form and photographs before loading “Load it and trust us”, with no paper
Knowledge of the paperwork They ask about the age of the car, its finance and the type of exit They say every car gets in with no conditions
Price They separate the transport rate from customs duty and insurance A single “all-inclusive” figure
The carrier They name its type and send its picture They do not know whether it is open or enclosed
Delivery An address in Qatar and an inspection on receipt Delivery at the border, with the rest left to you

And ask one question that reveals a great deal: what happens to my car if it is refused at Abu Samra? Anyone with a specific answer has made the crossing before.

Frequently asked questions about shipping cars from Jeddah to Qatar

How much does it cost to ship a car from Jeddah to Qatar?

A saloon on a shared open carrier starts from SAR 2,020, a 4×4 from SAR 2,570, and a sports or electric car from SAR 3,220. In an enclosed carrier a saloon starts from SAR 3,860 and a 4×4 from SAR 4,600. The rate covers transport from Jeddah to the address in Qatar, and Qatari customs duty is paid on top of it. Call 0552803439 to have your own car priced.

How many days does a car take from Jeddah to Doha?

Between 3 and 7 days from the day of collection to the handover of the key. A single-car flatbed is the quickest, because it leaves as soon as it is loaded and arrives in two to four days. A shared carrier waits in Jeddah until its load is complete, so it takes four to seven days. What stretches the time is usually a missing paper at the border, not the length of the road.

Which border post does the car carrier use to enter Qatar?

The Salwa post in the Eastern Province, which faces the Abu Samra post on the Qatari side. It is the only land crossing between the two countries, so there is no other road a carrier could divert to. From there Doha is about 100 km away.

What is the difference between an open carrier and an enclosed one?

An open carrier takes several cars on two decks and they share its cost, which is how most family cars travel. An enclosed carrier is a box with walls and a roof that keeps dust, stone chips, sun and curious eyes away from the car, and the car enters it on a horizontal lift. Choose enclosed if the car is a luxury model, a classic, a low-slung car or has special paintwork.

What documents are needed to ship a car from Jeddah to Qatar?

A valid vehicle registration (istimara), the owner’s ID or residence permit, the export certificate and export plates from the Traffic Department if the car is leaving for good, a release letter from the lender if the car is financed, and an authorisation for us to handle clearance. On the Qatari side: the recipient’s Qatar ID or residence permit, the purchase invoice if the car has been sold, and the Maqassa document if its duty was paid in the Gulf before.

Do the Saudi plates have to be surrendered before shipping?

They do if the car will be registered in Qatar or has been sold to a buyer there: the plates are handed in at the Traffic Department and the car leaves on export plates. They do not if the car will come back to the Kingdom after a visit or an event, in which case it enters Qatar temporarily on its own plates and registration. Tell us the purpose before you book, because the paperwork for the two cases is different.

How old may a car be to enter Qatar?

The rule in force for permanent registration is that a light vehicle must be no more than five years from its date of manufacture, and a heavy vehicle no more than ten. The condition concerns anyone who wants Qatari plates, not a visiting car that enters on its own plates. We confirm what applies to your car before its plates are surrendered.

How much is the customs duty on a car in Qatar?

5% of the value of the car as assessed by customs, and that value includes the freight and insurance. The duty is not paid a second time if it was collected when the car first entered one of the Gulf states and the Maqassa document proves it. The owner pays the duty directly to customs, and it is not part of the transport rate.

Do you ship classic cars from Jeddah to Qatar?

Yes, in an enclosed carrier only. The car is raised on a horizontal lift so its underside never touches a ramp, covered with a soft fabric cover and secured by its tyres, not its chassis. Its price is set on request, according to its condition and value. Because a classic is older than the usual registration limit in Qatar, we go through it with you before booking: whether it will enter temporarily for a show or whether a special approval will be sought.

Do you carry motorcycles and cars that do not run?

We carry both. A motorcycle is strapped upright on a wooden base or inside a crate, and its price is set on request according to its size. A car that does not run is pulled onto the carrier by an electric winch, so tell us its condition when you book: whether the wheels turn, and whether the steering and brakes work.

Can I leave my personal belongings inside the car?

No. The car is declared at the border as an empty vehicle, and anything inside it is treated as undeclared cargo and may stop the crossing. Insurance does not cover what is inside either. Only the spare wheel, the jack kit and the warning triangle stay in it, and we ship your belongings for you as a separate load.

Is there air freight for cars from Jeddah to Qatar?

There is. The car is loaded onto a cargo pallet at King Abdulaziz International Airport and flies to Hamad International Airport, then it is delivered in Doha. It is chosen by owners of luxury and rare cars and by anyone with a show or race date to meet. Its price is set on request according to the weight and dimensions of the car and the flight available.

Is my car insured during transport?

Carrier’s liability applies to every car that is loaded, and it is capped. For anyone who wants cover for the full value of the car, we issue a transit insurance policy in their name before loading. Your Saudi motor insurance policy, however, does not cover the car while it is being carried on a transporter. The photographed collection report is the reference for any claim.

Which is better: driving the car to Qatar myself or shipping it?

Driving suits someone travelling with the family on a visit who will return with the car. Shipping suits someone relocating, who flies and lets the car follow, someone who has sold or bought a car, and the owner of a luxury car who does not want to add 1,500 km to its odometer. Once fuel, an overnight stop and fatigue are counted, the difference in cost narrows.

Do you ship cars from Qatar to Jeddah?

Yes. We collect the car from its address in Qatar, it crosses from Abu Samra to Salwa and it is delivered in Jeddah. The rule in force in the Kingdom is that a car imported for registration must be no more than five model years old, and must not be damaged or converted from right-hand drive. We check its papers before it moves.
