Who ships from Riyadh to Indonesia?

Riyadh has a large Indonesian community: people working in homes and companies, university students, and visitors passing through. Most of what ships on this route is boxes that a worker fills over months with gifts, clothes and things for the family, then sends before Ramadan or before going home. Alongside them are the date and perfume traders selling to importers in Jakarta.

Who What they ship Usual method
An Indonesian worker or resident Boxes of gifts, clothes and things for the family Consolidated sea
Someone returning for good All their belongings, and sometimes furniture Consolidated sea, or a container
A sponsor sending a worker’s belongings A box or two after the worker has travelled Consolidated sea, or air
A student Books and belongings Air, or consolidated sea
A trader Dates, perfumes and goods Containers, and samples by air

Route and transit time for shipping from Riyadh to Indonesia

Riyadh is an inland city, so the shipment starts with a road leg. Its nearest port is King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, about 400 km away. From there the vessel sails through the Gulf, the Indian Ocean and the Strait of Malacca to Jakarta, mostly with transshipment in Singapore or Port Klang.

Method Sailing or flight time Door to door Suits
Consolidated sea 16 – 24 days 30 – 40 days Boxes and belongings
Full container 14 – 20 days 25 – 35 days Goods, and a whole home’s furniture
Air to Jakarta Hours 3 – 6 days The urgent, and parcels

Consolidated freight takes longer because the boxes wait at the warehouse for the container to fill, and are then sorted in Jakarta and distributed to the cities. Anyone shipping to an island other than Java adds a week or two for domestic sea transport.

Cost of shipping from Riyadh to Indonesia

At Home Safe the price is worked out per cubic metre for consolidated freight, per container for a full load, and per kilogram by air. Send the number of your boxes and their sizes, or the type of goods and their weight, to 0552803439 and you will have the price the same day.

What you are shipping Pricing unit What we need to price it
Boxes and belongings by sea The cubic metre The number of boxes and the size of each
A full container The container The type of goods and the city of delivery
Parcels and belongings by air The chargeable kilogram The weight and dimensions
Commercial dates and foodstuffs The container or the pallet The quantity, and whether a refrigerated container is needed

What sets the price?

What sets the price Its effect
Volume By sea a box is charged on its volume, not its weight
Method Consolidated is cheapest; air is quickest and dearest
Transport from Riyadh to the port A fixed item spread over the shipment’s volume
City of delivery Jakarta is cheapest; other islands carry extra transport
Clearance and delivery to the address Stated outright in the price
Season Before Ramadan demand rises and containers fill

Ask where the price ends: a price “to Jakarta” may mean the port of Jakarta, not your family’s home in their village. Ask for the price to the address, including clearance, and write the address in full.

To work out your boxes’ volume use the volume calculator.

From Riyadh to the port: how does the shipment start?

Moving shipments from Riyadh to the port for shipping to Indonesia

There is no sea at Riyadh, so every sea shipment from it goes through a road stage first. We collect and consolidate in Riyadh, then the truck leaves for whichever port suits the sailing date.

  • Collection: from your home or warehouse in Riyadh, with weighing and measuring.
  • Consolidation: at our warehouse, with other shipments for the same destination.
  • Transport to Dammam: by truck, about 400 km.
  • Or to Jeddah: when its service suits better or sails sooner, about 950 km.
  • Export clearance: at the port of departure.
Port Distance from Riyadh When we choose it
King Abdulaziz in Dammam About 400 km The default, as it is nearest and faces east
Jeddah Islamic About 950 km When its vessel sails sooner, or the consolidated container is filled there

All the Riyadh services are in the article on the international shipping company in Riyadh.

Shipping boxes of belongings and personal items

Shipping boxes of belongings from Riyadh to Indonesia

Most of what ships on this route is boxes sent by Indonesian residents to their families, and the belongings of people returning for good.

  • The box: a sturdy carton, strapped and numbered, bearing the consignee’s address and Indonesian mobile number.
  • The contents list: what is in each box, in English or Indonesian.
  • The worker’s exemption: an Indonesian worker abroad has an exemption on what they send home, up to 500 dollars a shipment, for a limited number of shipments a year.
  • The returnee’s exemption: anyone who has lived outside Indonesia for a year or more has an exemption on their used belongings on returning for good, with documents proving their residence.
  • New items in quantity: treated as goods, and charged.
  • Not allowed in boxes: used clothing meant for sale, medicines in quantity, and cigarettes over the limit.

How do you prepare the box?

  1. Choose a double-walled carton, or a sturdy plastic box. The journey is a month and the climate humid.
  2. Fill it to the top: you pay for the whole box’s volume, and empty space makes it collapse under what is above.
  3. Heavy items at the bottom, and fragile ones between clothes.
  4. Liquids: in sealed bags, away from fabric.
  5. Write the list as you pack: the item, its count and its approximate value.
  6. Close it with tape and a strap, and write the address on two sides.

Often the worker travels and their box stays, so their sponsor sends it after them. We then need a copy of the worker’s passport, and their address and mobile number there. The service is detailed on the parcel shipping page.

Belongings and furniture of someone returning for good

Anyone returning to Indonesia after years in the Kingdom ships more than a box: a family’s belongings, appliances, and sometimes furniture. If the volume reaches 15 cubic metres or more, a full container is cheaper and safer.

  • Proof: the passport with its entry and exit stamps, and evidence of living abroad for a year or more.
  • Used, not new: new boxed appliances fall outside the exemption.
  • The inventory: a numbered, detailed list.
  • Electrical appliances: Indonesia is on 230 volts with the European socket, so appliances from the Kingdom work with a plug adaptor.
  • Packing: for humidity: wood, fabric and appliances tightly wrapped.

Details are on the furniture and household shipping page.

Shipping dates and commercial goods to Indonesia

Shipping dates and goods from Riyadh to Indonesia

Indonesia is one of the largest markets for Saudi dates, and demand rises months before Ramadan. But it is among the most demanding markets for foodstuffs: the product is registered before it ships, not after it arrives.

  • The importer: an Indonesian company with a business registration number and an import licence.
  • Product registration: packaged foods are registered with the Indonesian food and drug authority before shipping.
  • A halal certificate: required for foodstuffs, and recognised by the competent Indonesian body.
  • A health certificate and certificate of origin from the Saudi authorities.
  • The label: in Indonesian, bearing the importer’s name and the expiry date.
  • Packing: able to withstand tropical humidity, with a refrigerated container for soft varieties.

Timing: plan a Ramadan shipment at least three months ahead. Registration and clearance take longer than the sailing.

Perfumes, abayas and carpets ship the same way, with an invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, and whatever licences their category needs. Commercial shipping is detailed on the commercial shipping page.

Why do we not ship cars to Indonesia?

Indonesia bans the import of used cars, and its vehicles drive on the left with right-hand drive. So cars from the Kingdom cannot enter for local use, and we do not accept them for shipping there, so that they do not arrive and then get sent back at their owner’s expense. The destinations available for car shipping are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia.

Indonesian customs and the documents

Indonesian customs clears a personal shipment in the consignee’s name, so their details are the most important thing in the paperwork. A shipment with an incomplete address or no ID number stays in the customs warehouse.

Type of shipment Documents
Boxes and personal belongings The consignee’s passport or ID, a contents list, and an Indonesian mobile number
The box of a worker abroad The above, with proof that they are a registered worker, for the exemption
Effects of someone returning for good Passport, proof of living abroad for a year or more, and a contents list
Commercial goods Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s number and licence
Foodstuffs The above, with product registration, a halal certificate and a health certificate
  • The consignee’s ID number: customs asks for it to clear the parcel.
  • The address: with street, neighbourhood, sub-district, city, province and postcode.
  • The value: written truthfully. An understated value delays the shipment and saves nothing.

The documents are explained on the required documents page, and clearance on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Indonesia, or is restricted

Item Rule
Used cars Banned
Used clothing meant for sale Banned
Medicines Personal quantities only
Cigarettes and tobacco A small limit, and anything above is confiscated
Mobile phones and tablets A limited number per shipment, and their number is registered to work on networks there
Foodstuffs in quantity With registration and a halal certificate
Plants and seeds With a phytosanitary certificate
Flammable liquids, and perfumes in quantity Not shipped by air, and by sea by special arrangement

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Delivery in Jakarta and the other Indonesian cities

Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands. Jakarta and Surabaya, on the island of Java, are its two gateways, and from them a shipment carries on by road within Java, or by sea to the other islands.

City Gateway Note
Jakarta, Bogor and Bekasi Tanjung Priok Delivery within the capital region
Bandung Tanjung Priok About 150 km by road
Semarang and Yogyakarta Tanjung Priok or Tanjung Perak Central Java, by road
Surabaya and Malang Tanjung Perak The port of East Java
Medan and Aceh The port of Belawan North Sumatra
Makassar and Lombok Via Jakarta or Surabaya With extra domestic sea transport

More on the destination is on the shipping to Indonesia page.

Air freight from Riyadh to Jakarta

Air freight from Riyadh to Jakarta

Air freight from King Khalid Airport in Riyadh to Soekarno–Hatta Airport in Jakarta delivers the shipment within 3 to 6 days. And it cuts out the whole road stage: the shipment leaves from Riyadh itself.

  • For whom: urgent parcels, documents, samples and seasonal gifts.
  • How it is charged: on chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: the rate per kilo falls as the weight rises. Ask for it on 0552803439.
  • Dates by air: for small quantities and samples, not large commercial shipments.
  • When it beats sea on cost: for a light parcel under 20 kg, as sea freight has a minimum volume.

It is detailed on the air freight page and in the article on express international shipping.

Packing for the tropical climate

  • Humidity: ordinary cardboard softens in Jakarta’s humidity. A double-walled carton, and an inner plastic bag for anything water affects.
  • Dates: in sealed boxes inside cartons, away from heat.
  • Appliances: foam and cardboard, and desiccant bags.
  • Boxes: wide tape and a strap, and reinforced corners for the heavy.

How to pack each kind of item is on the packing guide page.

Collection from Riyadh’s districts

Area Examples
North Riyadh Al-Malqa, Al-Yasmin, Al-Narjis, Hittin, Al-Sahafah, Al-Aqiq

  • A late Ramadan shipment: it arrives after the season.
