Who ships between Saudi Arabia and Japan, and what do they ship?
Shipments to Japan are mostly small, because homes there are small. Shipments from it are mostly commercial: parts and equipment.
| Shipper | What they ship | Most suitable method |
|---|---|---|
| A scholarship student going to Japan | Cartons of clothes, books and personal items | A part load by sea, and an urgent carton by air |
| An employee or family moving | Personal belongings and items of value to them | A part load by sea |
| A Japanese national returning from work in the Kingdom | Belongings, collectibles and carpets | A part load or a 20ft container |
| A spare-parts trader | Japanese car parts to the Kingdom | Consolidation in a container, and air for urgent items |
| An importer of equipment and electronics | Machinery, cameras and devices to the Kingdom | Container or flat rack, and air for light items |
| Someone sending a gift or document | A small parcel or papers | Express shipping door to door |
Route and transit time from Saudi Arabia to Japan
Japan is our farthest destination in Asia. The port is chosen by your city: the Tokyo Bay ports for the east of the country, and the Osaka Bay ports for the west.
| Port or airport | Sailing or flight time | Door to door | Serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yokohama and Tokyo | 22–30 days | 32–45 days | Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama |
| Nagoya | 22–30 days | 32–45 days | Central Japan |
| Kobe and Osaka | 21–29 days | 32–44 days | Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hiroshima |
| Part load | 24–34 days | 38–45 days | Belongings and under 15 m³ |
| Air to Tokyo or Osaka | A day with a stop | 3–6 days | Urgent and light belongings |
From Dammam the voyage is days shorter. We choose the port of departure by your city and the earliest sailing.
What lengthens the time?
- Transshipment: some lines change vessel at an intermediate Asian port.
- Waiting for consolidation: a part load waits for the shared container to fill.
- The stamped declaration: clearance waits for your photo of the stamped copy.
- A vague list: Japanese customs open cartons if the list is not detailed.
- Holidays: Golden Week in May, the mid-August holiday and New Year slow the port and delivery.
- Typhoon season: in late summer vessels may be delayed by days.
Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Japan
These are the starting prices of our services. Sea freight is priced by volume and port on the day you ask, and you receive its price the same day if you send your shipment’s details to 0552803439.
| Service | Price starts from |
|---|---|
| Air freight per kg | SAR 26 |
| Express parcel up to 5 kg | SAR 110 |
| Express documents up to 1 kg | SAR 83 |
| Sea part load | Per cubic metre; priced the day you ask |
| Full 20ft or 40ft container | A price per container; sent the day you ask |
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| The port | Yokohama for the east and Kobe for the west; a mistake costs 500 km by road |
| Delivery | Streets are narrow and flats small; a small truck and exterior lifting may be needed |
| Packing | A separate item, and standards there are high |
| Insurance | Optional, a percentage of the value |
How do you lower the cost?
- Leave large furniture behind; there is no room for it in a Japanese flat and its freight is high.
- Do not ship electrical appliances; the supply there is different.
- Ship a part load; most movers do not need a container.
- Choose the port near your city; road transport in Japan is expensive.
- Gather your purchases from Japan at one supplier or warehouse before shipping.
Sea freight to Japan: full container or part load?
Sea freight is cheapest for anything beyond a few cartons. The first question is whether you fill a container or share one.
| Comparison | Part load | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 m³ | 15–28 m³ | 30–60 m³ |
| Suits | A student’s belongings, one or two rooms | A two- to three-room flat | A villa, or furniture with a car |
| Charged | Per cubic metre | A price per container | A price per container |
| Time | Longer because of consolidation | Shorter | Shorter |
| In Japan | Best for most movers | For a family with all its furniture, a rare case | Mostly for commercial goods |
If your volume is close to 15 cubic metres, compare both prices; a full container may be cheaper and safer. Container dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the method is detailed on the sea freight page.
The unaccompanied baggage declaration: the step you cannot make up for

In Japan, clearance of your shipment begins at the airport on the day you arrive, not at the port on the day it arrives.
- On the plane or at the airport: fill in the personal effects declaration form in two copies.
- Mention the shipment: write that you have unaccompanied baggage, the number of packages and how it was shipped.
- At the customs officer: present both copies. One is stamped and returned to you.
- Keep the stamped copy: it is what clears the shipment exempt when it arrives.
- Send us a photo of it: so we can pass it to our agent with your passport and list of contents.
Note: anyone who leaves the airport without the stamp usually loses the exemption, and tax is paid on their belongings. We remind you of this before you travel, as it is the step most often forgotten.
Japanese customs and movers’ belongings
Japan exempts a mover’s used belongings, and its customs are among the most exacting in reading lists. Correct paperwork here is worth days.
- Used belongings: a mover’s furniture and personal belongings in reasonable quantities enter exempt.
- Time limit: the shipment arrives within six months of your entry.
- New items: pay 10% consumption tax, and customs duty on some items.
- The list: very detailed, in English or Japanese. Japanese customs are exacting, and “miscellaneous items” is not accepted.
- Electrical appliances: the supply is 100 volts, and the frequency differs between eastern and western Japan. Most of the Kingdom’s appliances do not work there without a transformer.
Customs procedures are on the customs clearance page.
Delivery to Japanese houses and flats

Delivery in Japan differs from any other country we ship to: spaces are tight, rules are precise, and the building is protected before the first item goes in.
- Space: a Japanese flat is small. A three-seater sofa or a two-metre-wide wardrobe may not go through the door or find a place.
- Measure before you ship: ask for your home’s floor plan and the size of its door and lift, and compare with your furniture.
- Streets: a large truck cannot enter residential lanes, so belongings are moved to a small truck.
- Protecting the building: covers are laid on floors, corridor corners and the lift before any item goes in.
- Packing waste: its disposal there is regulated and costly, so the delivery crew takes it away.
Our advice: ship your personal items and what you value, and leave large furniture behind. Details are on the furniture shipping page.
Packing for shipping to Japan
The voyage takes over a month through hot, humid regions, and the shipment is handled several times before it reaches your flat. Packing is prepared for that.
- Cartons: double-wall, numbered, and small so they are easy to carry through narrow corridors.
- Humidity: moisture-absorbing bags inside cartons and in the container.
- Glass and antiques: heat-treated wooden crates with the international stamp.
- Carpets: cleaned and dried, then rolled.
- The list: written during packing, carton by carton, with what is in each.
All the methods are in the packing guide.
Car shipping to Japan
Shipping a car to Japan is legally possible and usually not worthwhile. We explain why before you ask about the price.
- Steering side: Japan drives on the left with right-hand-drive cars, but it registers left-hand-drive cars.
- Charges: no customs duty on passenger cars, and 10% consumption tax.
- The obstacle: the emissions and conformity test, then the mandatory periodic inspection, all costly for a car not built for the Japanese market.
- Parking space: in most cities a car cannot be registered without a certificate proving you have a parking space.
That is why people rarely ship their car to Japan. Better-suited destinations are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Shipping from Japan to Saudi Arabia

Much of our work on this route runs the other way: Japanese goods coming to the Kingdom.
- What is shipped: Japanese car spare parts, electronics and cameras, and equipment and machinery.
- Cars: Japanese domestic-market cars are right-hand drive, and the Kingdom does not register right-hand drive. So do not buy a car at a Japanese auction before checking its steering side and the Kingdom’s age condition.
- Consolidation: we collect from more than one supplier and ship in one container or on one pallet.
- Conformity: products subject to technical regulations are registered on the SABER platform before shipping.
- Time: 25 to 35 days by sea to Jeddah or Dammam, and 3 to 6 days by air.
| What you import | Most suitable method | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Urgent spare parts | Air | The part number on the invoice |
| Spare parts and engines in quantity | Part load or container | A conformity certificate where required |
| Cameras and electronics | Air | Batteries, and Saudi conformity |
| Equipment and machinery | Container or flat rack | Dimensions, weight and lifting points |
| A car | RoRo or container | The steering side and age condition before buying |
Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Documents required for shipping to Japan

| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, and certificate of origin |
| Parcels and gifts | A description of the contents and their value, and the consignee’s address and mobile number |
The documents are explained on the required documents page.
What cannot be shipped to Japan or needs a permit
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Some cold and allergy medicines and stimulants | Banned in Japan even if permitted here |
| Medicines in general | More than a month’s supply needs a prior import permit |
| Meat and its products, and fresh fruit and vegetables | Prohibited |
| Weapons, swords and long knives | Prohibited or by permit |
| Counterfeits | Confiscated |
| Plants and soil | Subject to plant quarantine |

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Saudi Arabia to Japan
How much does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Japan cost?
Air freight starts from SAR 26 per kg, an express parcel up to 5 kg from SAR 110, and documents from SAR 83. Sea freight is charged per cubic metre or per container, and you receive its price the same day on 0552803439.
How long does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Japan take?
22 to 30 days’ sailing to Yokohama or Kobe, and 32 to 45 days door to door. Air to Tokyo takes 3 to 6 days.
What is the unaccompanied baggage declaration?
A customs form in two copies that you present at the arrival airport, stating that you have belongings coming by freight. One copy is stamped and returned to you, and with it your shipment is cleared exempt.
What if I do not present the declaration at the airport?
You usually lose the exemption and tax is paid on the shipment. So do not leave the airport before the form is stamped.
When must the belongings arrive?
Within six months of your entry into Japan.
Can a Saudi car be shipped to Japan?
It is legally possible, as Japan registers left-hand-drive cars. But conformity and emissions tests and the periodic inspection make it costly, so few do it.
Do you ship from Japan to Saudi Arabia?
Yes: spare parts, electronics and equipment, with consolidation and clearance. Japanese domestic cars are right-hand drive, and the Kingdom does not register right-hand drive.
What cannot be shipped to Japan?
Meat and fresh fruit, some cold medicines and stimulants banned there, and weapons. Medicines above a month’s supply need a prior permit.
Do you ship to Osaka, Kyoto and Nagoya?
Yes. Osaka and Kyoto are served from the Port of Kobe, Nagoya from its own port, and Tokyo from Yokohama.
What is the cheapest way to ship to Japan?
A sea part load for anything under 15 cubic metres. Homes there are small, so most movers need no more.
What is the air price per kg to Japan?
From SAR 26 per kg on chargeable weight, falling as the weight rises.
Will my electrical appliances work in Japan?
Most will not. The supply there is 100 volts and the Kingdom’s appliances are 220 volts, so they need a transformer. It is cheaper not to ship large appliances.
Which Saudi port is the container shipped from to Japan?
From Dammam or from Jeddah. Dammam is days closer to East Asia, so we choose by your city and the earliest sailing.
Is the shipment insured?
The carrier’s liability is limited. For a valuable shipment there is optional insurance calculated as a percentage of its declared value, with every item photographed.
When should I ship before I travel?
Two to four weeks before you travel for sea freight, so the shipment arrives after you and you hold the stamped copy of the declaration.
