Korean customs and the exemption for those moving their residence

Korean customs for shipments from Saudi Arabia

Korea exempts used household belongings for those moving to live there, on conditions:

Length of stay: you intend to stay at least a year, or six months if your family is with you. It is proved by a visa and an alien registration card.
Use: the belongings must have been used for more than three months before shipping.
Time limit: the shipment must arrive within six months of your arrival.
What is not exempt: new items and anything used for less than three months, and alcohol and tobacco.
Food: small quantities only. A large quantity pays duty.

The container does not reach the front door: in Korea the belongings are unloaded from the container at a bonded warehouse, then moved by truck after clearance. So the packing must withstand two handlings.

Shipping furniture and belongings to Korea

The shipment is loaded in the Kingdom, unloaded at the bonded warehouse, loaded onto a truck, then lifted to the flat. At least four handlings, and the packing is prepared for them.

Cartons: double-wall, numbered, with contents recorded in English.
Furniture: dismantled where possible, and wrapped in blankets and corrugated cardboard.
Glass and mirrors: heat-treated wooden crates with the international stamp.
Appliances: the supply in Korea is 220 volts, and the plug is the round European type, different from the Kingdom’s.
Volume: flats are small, so ship what your housing can hold.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Korea

Shipping a car to Korea is possible as far as the steering side goes, but costly in duties and tests. The clear exception is a Korean-made car.

Steering side: Korea drives on the right with left-hand-drive cars, like the Kingdom’s.
Charges: customs duty of about 8%, 10% VAT and other taxes, calculated on the car’s value after depreciation by year.
Ownership condition: the car must have been registered in your name for more than three months before shipping.
Tests: it must pass government safety, emissions and noise tests before registration, which are costly for a car not built for the Korean market.
A Korean-made car: returning to its country of manufacture is exempt from duty.
