Who ships a car from the UAE to Morocco?
The UAE is home to thousands of Moroccans working in aviation, hotels, education, security and trade, most of them in Dubai and Abu Dhabi. It is also home to Emiratis who own houses in Marrakech, Rabat and Tangier and spend part of the year there. Add to them the car showrooms that sell to Moroccan customers. Each of these needs a different Emirati paper and a different Moroccan entry regime, which is why we ask about the purpose before anything else:
| Who is shipping | What they want | Closest method | The Emirati paper |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Moroccan whose contract has ended and who is going home | To move the car and the home in one go | A 40ft container shared between the car and the furniture | Export certificate and export plates |
| A resident going on a long holiday | The car with them in Morocco, then back | A container out and back, or air | Tourism certificate, plates kept |
| An Emirati family with a house in Morocco | The family car or a luxury car for the season | A closed container, or air for those in a hurry | Tourism certificate |
| A showroom, company or embassy | More than one car, or the car of a transferred employee | 40ft containers for two cars | Export for each chassis separately |
Will Morocco accept your car coming from the UAE?
We start with this question because it settles the whole journey. Morocco allows a used car to be imported permanently only within an age limit, and the limit in force is five years counted from the date the car was first registered in any country. That date is written on the Emirati vehicle registration card, and it is not the year of manufacture. The ruling then branches according to the owner of the car:
| Your position | Entry regime into Morocco | The rule in force |
|---|---|---|
| You are returning to settle, and your car is five years old or less | Permanent import with payment of duties | A value assessed by customs, less a percentage for each year of age |
| A retired Moroccan, sixty or older | Permanent import with a 90% reduction of the value | At least ten years of residence outside Morocco, a passenger car no more than ten years old, a privilege granted once, with a ceiling on value, and with the holder present |
| A resident of the UAE or a visiting Emirati | Temporary admission free of duty | Up to 180 days a year, for personal use, after which the car leaves |
| A car older than five years whose owner is not among the exceptions | No permanent import | Temporary entry on its plates, or sale in the UAE |
The retirees’ privilege is limited to passenger cars, so it covers neither a pickup nor a motorcycle, and it requires proof of retirement and a short-validity residence certificate from the Moroccan consular services in the UAE. These rules are reviewed by the Moroccan finance law every year, so we write them as “the rule in force” and confirm what applies with the customs broker before shipping.
Count the age on the day of arrival: what matters is the date the car is presented to Moroccan customs, not the date it leaves Jebel Ali. If your car is three months short of completing its fifth year, the sea voyage alone consumes half of that. We put the two dates in front of you and leave a margin for a late ship. Everything else to ask before shipping any car is in the car shipping guide.
Shipping cars inside containers from Jebel Ali Port in the UAE to Casablanca and Tanger Med
Jebel Ali Port in Dubai is the largest container port in the region, and many shipping lines bound for the Mediterranean and Europe pass through it. That is what makes the container the main method for cars to Morocco: its sailings are more frequent, and Tanger Med itself is a major stop on the route between Asia and Europe. The ship leaves the Arabian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, rounds the peninsula in the Arabian Sea, then climbs the Red Sea to the Suez Canal and crosses the Mediterranean westwards to the Strait of Gibraltar.

In the loading yard the car is driven slowly into the container, its four wheels are strapped to the lashing points in the floor, and wooden chocks are placed in front of and behind it. Then the door is closed and the seal is fitted, and its number is written on the bill of lading and sent to you with the photograph. Sealing the container after loading is your guarantee: nobody opens it before Moroccan customs. These are the stages of the route:
| Stage | What happens in it | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| Collection from your address in the UAE | Flatbed, joint inspection, photographs and condition report | One day |
| Loading and entry to Jebel Ali | Securing and sealing, and an export declaration with Dubai customs | 2–5 days |
| Sailing to Tanger Med | A direct ship or with a change at a hub port | About 16–24 days |
| Sailing to Casablanca | Usually with a change of ship before the Atlantic | About 18–28 days |
| Clearance at the Moroccan port | Declaration, breaking the seal in front of the inspector, assessment and payment | 2–6 days if the file is complete |
| Transport to your city | A car carrier from the port gate to the address | One to 3 days |
Some freight firms in the UAE publish a sailing time of 14 to 20 days from Jebel Ali to Casablanca. That is the ship’s time alone at best, with no waiting and no clearance. So we fix the time for you on the schedule of the ship actually booked. The ports we work through are on the ports and gateways page.
Transit time for a car from the UAE to Morocco, and the urgent service
Time on this route is spread over three things: waiting for the ship, the sailing, and Moroccan clearance. The sailing is beyond our control. Waiting and clearance, however, shorten when the papers are ready before entry to the port. For anyone with a date that cannot slip we book the nearest direct container ship, or move them to air. This is what we expect for each method:
| Method | Door-to-door time | What governs its date |
|---|---|---|
| Private 20ft container to Tanger Med | 30–38 days | The nearest ship after the car’s certificate is issued |
| 40ft container with the car and furniture to Casablanca | 34–45 days | Finishing the furniture packing and preparing the list |
| RoRo vessel | 35–45 days | A suitable car sailing being available at booking |
| Air freight to Casablanca | 3–6 days | Confirmation of space on the aircraft |
What lengthens the time?
- Change of ship: if the first is late for the second at the hub port, the container stays there until the next sailing.
- The Moroccan summer season: from June to August Tanger Med is crowded with people returning from Europe, and the wait for inspection grows.
We do not write a date to the hour, but a realistic range, and we tell you of every change to it. Times for other routes are on the transit times page.
Cost of shipping a car from the UAE to Morocco
We looked for anyone publishing a clear price for shipping a car from the UAE to Morocco and found no figure fit to be the basis of a fixed price, and container freight from Jebel Ali moves from month to month. So the price on this route is set on request and sent to you in items: transport inside the UAE, loading and securing, sea or air freight, charges at the two ports, then clearance and delivery in Morocco if you want them. Moroccan customs duties are a separate item. The last three lines are the prices of our Saudi line, placed there only for you to measure against:
| Service | Price | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A car in a private 20ft container from Jebel Ali | Set on request | Includes securing and sealing |
| 40ft container for the car and household goods | Set on request | By the volume of furniture and the Moroccan port |
| A car on a RoRo vessel | Set on request | By the sailing available and the cubic metre |
| Air freight for the car from UAE airports | Set on request | By weight, dimensions and fuel type |
| For comparison: saloon on RoRo from Jeddah port to a Moroccan port | Starts from SAR 2,200 | About AED 2,150, the Saudi line |
| For comparison: a car in a 20ft container from Jeddah port | Starts from SAR 10,100 | About AED 9,900, the Saudi line |
| For comparison: 40ft container for the car and furniture from Jeddah port | Starts from SAR 14,720 | About AED 14,400, the Saudi line |
Prices circulating in the market: what is published about the UAE–Morocco route is transit times and ports without prices. The figures that circulate for a private 20ft container with one car fall between AED 16,500 and 31,000, and for a 40ft container between AED 20,000 and 45,000. That is a very wide range, because its lower end is sea freight as far as the port and its upper end is a door-to-door service. For shipping a car from the UAE to Europe in general, between AED 10,000 and 15,000 is mentioned, without the taxes of the country of arrival. So do not compare two figures before you know where each of them ends.
| Factor | Its effect on the price |
|---|---|
| Size and weight of the car | A long or tall car needs a larger or high-cube container, and RoRo charges by volume |
| Shipping method | A shared place costs less than a private container, and air is higher than all by a wide margin |
| The emirate of collection | Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah and Al Ain are further from Jebel Ali than Dubai and Sharjah |
| The port and city in Morocco | Sea freight differs between the two ports, and so does the carrier’s distance after them |
How do you reduce the cost?
- Put the car and the furniture in one 40ft container instead of two separate shipments.
- Ask around you for a Moroccan returning to the same region, and share a container for two cars.
Each pricing item is explained on the pricing factors page.
How does Home Safe carry out shipping from the UAE as a Saudi establishment?
You have a right to know who you are dealing with. Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah, with no branch and no warehouse in the UAE, and we do not claim otherwise. The field work there is carried out by licensed partner agents: the collection flatbed, the loading yard, the export formalities with customs, and handing the container to the port. We take care of what lies between the two ends: the booking with the shipping line, the review of the papers, coordination with the Moroccan customs broker, and following up with you on one number until delivery. Three things about the UAE are useful to know:
- The licensing authority follows the emirate: a car registered in Dubai has its certificate issued by the Roads and Transport Authority, and a car from Abu Dhabi, Sharjah or Ajman by the vehicle licensing authority there.
- There is one main port: Jebel Ali for most bookings. Khalifa Port in Abu Dhabi has a car terminal that we use if its schedule suits, as do Port Khalid and Khor Fakkan in Sharjah when a sailing is available from them.
- There are three airports: Dubai International, Al Maktoum International and Zayed International in Abu Dhabi.
If your car is in the Kingdom rather than the UAE, the shorter route for you is in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Morocco. The service in general is on the car shipping page.
Collecting cars from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and the other emirates
This is the only road leg of the journey inside the UAE: a flatbed that takes the car from your address to the loading yard near Jebel Ali or to the airport. The agent calls you a day ahead and agrees with you on a time and a place where the flatbed can stop. At collection the car is inspected in your presence, and the remarks are recorded in a report signed by both sides.
| Emirate | Areas we collect from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | Deira, Bur Dubai, Business Bay, the Marina, Al Quoz, Al Warqa, Mirdif, Nad Al Sheba | The closest to Jebel Ali; collection from towers needs permission from the building management |
| Abu Dhabi | Abu Dhabi Island, Al Khalidiyah, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Mussafah, Al Shahama | About an hour and a half to Jebel Ali, or Khalifa Port if the date suits |
| Sharjah, Ajman and Umm Al Quwain | Al Nahda, Al Taawun, Muwaileh, Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya | Collection outside peak hours on the Dubai road is preferable |
| Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah | Al Nakheel, Al Hamra, Fujairah city, Dibba, Kalba | The longest distances, and their dates are grouped where possible |
RoRo or container: which is for your car?
Both methods are available from Jebel Ali, RoRo or inside a container, but they are not equal on the Morocco route. RoRo vessels heading west are fewer, and the car may pass through a collection port where it is driven off and on again. The container travels closed from the loading yard to Moroccan customs, even if the ship changes on the way. An individual container for each car is what we suggest for a valuable car, so that nobody shares it and nobody touches it.
| Comparison | RoRo vessel | Individual 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| How it is loaded | The port driver takes it to the car deck | Strapped down and the container closed on it | Two cars, or a car and household furniture |
| Condition of the car | Runs and moves under its own power | A non-runner is accepted by winching | A non-runner is accepted by winching |
| Belongings in or with it | Nothing | A little, and listed | A full household with a list |
| Suits best | An ordinary empty car whose owner is in no hurry | Luxury, classic and sports cars | Those returning for good, and showrooms |
The details of each method are on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.
Shipping the car with household goods in one container from the UAE to Morocco
Someone returning from the UAE after years carries a whole home with them: a bedroom, a sitting room, kitchen appliances, cartons of books and clothes, and then the car. Sending all of it in a single 40ft container is cheaper than a container for the car and a shipment for the furniture, and easier to follow because it has one bill of lading and one arrival date. A standard container is close to twelve metres long inside, and a mid-size car takes less than half of it.

- The car at the far end: it goes in first and is parked at the front wall of the container, then its wheels are strapped and it is chocked.
- A wooden partition between them: a wall of beams and boards fixed to the sides and floor of the container, separating the car from the furniture completely.
- The furniture on the door side: wardrobes and dismantled beds at the bottom, numbered cartons above them, and no gap that allows sliding.
- Nothing inside the car: the cabin and the boot stay empty, since customs inspects the car on its own.
- A detailed list of the contents: the number of each carton, what is in it and its approximate value, and a line for the car alone with the chassis number and the model.
On arrival each part goes its own way. The car is treated according to its age and its owner’s status, as we explained. The used effects of a Moroccan returning for good are exempt under the rule in force if the change-of-residence certificate from the consulate and a signed list are presented. A new appliance in its box counts as merchandise and is paid for. How furniture is packed is on the furniture shipping page, and the Moroccan rules for effects are in the article on shipping from Saudi Arabia to Morocco.
Shipping more than one car on one voyage
Showrooms, companies and families moving two cars ask about grouped shipping, and it really does lower each car’s share of the freight. A 40ft container carries two mid-size cars, and a high-cube container sometimes carries more on tilted metal racks. Grouping has conditions on the Morocco route:
- Every car in the container must be of an age Morocco accepts, since a breach holds up the release of the rest.
- We do not promise a fixed discount for numbers; the saving comes from dividing the container freight, and it appears in the offer item by item.
Types of cars we ship, large and small
The streets of the UAE are full of large 4x4s and sports cars, and these are not handled like a small saloon. Height decides whether the car goes into a standard or a high-cube container. Ground clearance decides the length of the ramp. Weight decides the number of lashing straps. A low or non-running car is loaded on a skid platform instead of being driven. So we ask for the dimensions before choosing the method:
| Type of vehicle | How it is shipped | A note specific to Morocco |
|---|---|---|
| Small saloon and hatchback | A place in a shared container, or RoRo | The lightest taxes, and the most shipped |
| Large 4×4 | A high-cube container after measuring the height | Moroccan taxes rise with engine power |
| Pickup and light truck | RoRo, or a container if the length allows | Classed as a utility vehicle and not covered by the retiree’s privilege |
| Sports and luxury | An individual container with a long ramp, or air | Insurance for the full value, and a high customs assessment |
| Classic | An individual closed container | Its age rules out permanent import in principle, so its entry regime is settled first |
| Motorcycle | A crate or wooden base inside a container | Its fuel is drained and its battery disconnected |
Preparing the car and wrapping it inside and out
The car will stay closed for more than a month and cross damp, salty seas. Half of good preparation is yours before the flatbed arrives, and half is ours in the loading yard. What we ask of you:
- The fuel tank: around a quarter, since a full one is refused at the port and a completely empty one stops the car being moved.
- Emptying the cabin: take out the toll tag, papers, devices and perfumes, and leave nothing in the boot.
- The mechanical check: make sure of the battery and the brakes and that there is no oil leak, since a leaking car is refused.
- The keys: one set with the car and one with you, along with the locking wheel nut key.
What we do for a sensitive car: a soft fabric cover over the body, covers for the seats and steering wheel, folding the mirrors and securing moving parts, and moisture-absorbing bags inside the container, then photographing it lashed down before the door is closed. This is for the container only, since a RoRo car is driven onto the ship and is not covered. The full explanation is on the packing and lashing page.
A summer on Emirati plates or permanent export?
Before you ask the licensing authority for any paper, decide the car’s fate. If it will spend months in Morocco and then return to the UAE, it is a touring car, neither struck off nor stripped of its plates. If it is going to stay, it is an exported car, whose file is closed here and for which an import file is opened there. The difference between the two cases runs through every item:
| Item | Temporary trip and return | Permanent export |
|---|---|---|
| The Emirati paper | Vehicle tourism certificate | Export certificate |
| Plates and registration | Stay as they are | Plates handed in and export plates issued |
| A mortgaged car | Possible with a no-objection from the bank | Not possible before the lien is lifted |
| In Morocco | Temporary admission up to 180 days a year | Permanent import, duties, then registration |
| The Moroccan age limit | Not asked about | Five years, or ten for the retiree who qualifies |
We draw attention to a point many overlook. Temporary admission in Morocco is recorded against the owner’s name and passport, so a car that arrives in a container needs them present at the port with the registration card and the tourism certificate. How it is applied to a shipped car is decided by the customs office at the port of arrival, so we clarify it with the customs broker before sailing. Morocco does not ask for the international carnet, which is explained on the triptik page.
Export certificate and export plate procedures in the UAE
Permanent export goes through the vehicle licensing authority of the emirate where the car was registered. In Dubai the transaction is submitted to the Roads and Transport Authority, through its customer happiness centres or its digital channels, depending on what is available. The steps are similar in the other emirates, with differences in fees and channels. We state the practice in force and confirm what applies on the day of the transaction:
| Step | What is required | What we advise |
|---|---|---|
| Fines | Payment of traffic fines, toll charges and parking | Check them twice, once before booking and once before the transaction |
| The lien | The bank’s notice that the lien is lifted | Ask for it early, as it is the slowest step |
| Certificate and plates | Handing in the original plates and receiving the export certificate and temporary export plates | Their validity is short, so they are not requested before the ship is confirmed |
| Customs | An export declaration at Jebel Ali or the airport | Submitted by the partner agent with the original certificate |
Keep a clear copy of the registration card before you hand it in, because the date of first registration recorded on it is what Moroccan customs uses to count the age of your car.
Car shipping documents and what is not loaded with it
The car’s file is presented in two countries. The UAE wants to be sure the car left with permission. Morocco wants to know who owns it, how old it is and under which regime it enters. We ask for copies of the papers first for review, and point out any difference in the spelling of the name between the passport, the registration and the bill of lading. The originals travel with the owner, not in the car.
| Document | Where it is required | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle registration card | The UAE and Morocco | The source of the first registration date |
| Export certificate or tourism certificate | UAE customs, then Morocco | According to the car’s fate |
| Passport and Emirates ID | Both countries | And the national card for a Moroccan |
| Residence or change-of-residence certificate from the consulate | Moroccan customs | For those returning for good and for the retiree |
| List of contents and bill of lading | Both countries | The list for those with furniture, and the bill with the chassis number |
Things that are not loaded with the car: personal belongings in a RoRo car, fuel and oil cans and gas cylinders by any method, cash, gold and original documents, weapons and ammunition, drones without a prior Moroccan licence, and medicines in quantities beyond personal use. The detail is on the shipping documents and prohibited items pages.
Customs clearance in Morocco, duties on the car and its registration
Clearance at the Moroccan port is done by an approved customs broker we work with, who prepares the declaration before the ship arrives. We do not promise you clearance that is “fast with no complications”, since its length follows how complete your file is and the inspection queue. We promise that you know the estimate before sailing. Customs does not rely on your purchase price but on the value of the car when new from its own references, less the percentage for age:
| Item | The rule in force | Our part |
|---|---|---|
| Import duty | In most cases 17.5% of the value after the deduction | We bring you an advance estimate from the broker |
| Value added tax | 20% calculated on the value and the duty together | Within the same estimate |
| Additional taxes | On powerful engines and high-value cars | We ask about the capacity and the fiscal horsepower |
| The returning retiree’s privilege | A 90% deduction from the value before the calculation | We match its conditions against your papers |
| Approval, inspection and registration | Individual approval, then a technical inspection, then the registration card and plates | We tell you what is usually asked of a Gulf-specification car |
The emissions documents of a car built for Gulf markets may not be in the European form Morocco knows. So a certificate from the manufacturer or its dealer may be requested, or a small change to the lighting or the units on the instrument cluster. The percentages quoted are changed by the finance law, so we confirm what applies before loading. The stages of clearance are on the customs clearance page.
Insuring the car and tracking it at every stage
The car’s Emirati insurance does not cover it as cargo on board a ship, and the sea carrier’s liability is limited to a small amount unrelated to its value. Real protection is a cargo insurance policy for the value of the car, from collection in the UAE to delivery in Morocco. It is optional, and a claim under it is built on the condition report, the photographs and the seal number.
As for tracking, half is yours and half is ours. You have the container number and the bill of lading number; you enter them on the shipping line’s website and see the last port where it was recorded. Our part is to message you when the container is sealed, on entry to Jebel Ali, on the ship’s departure, on berthing in Morocco, and then on release. We do not claim to have an app that shows your car’s position moment by moment, since sea tracking is updated at ports. The types of cover are on the cargo insurance page, and how to follow up is on the shipment tracking page.
Delivering cars from the UAE in Casablanca, Rabat, Marrakech and Tangier
The two ports of this route are Casablanca on the Atlantic and Tanger Med on the strait, and Agadir is an option for people in the south if a container sailing reaches it. After release the car leaves on a carrier, because a permanently imported car does not run without plates. At your address the consignee compares its condition with the loading photographs and signs the report. The key is handed over after the inspection, not before it.

| City | Port of arrival | Distance from the port | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casablanca | Casablanca | Inside the city | Delivered on the day of release or the next day |
| Rabat, Sale and Kenitra | Casablanca | About 90 km to Rabat | Embassy cars are coordinated with the mission before arrival |
| Marrakech | Casablanca | About 240 km | Delivery outside the walls of the old city at an agreed point |
| Tangier and Tetouan | Tanger Med | About 45 km to Tangier | The shortest road distance on the route |
| Agadir | Casablanca, or the port of Agadir if available | About 460 km from Casablanca | Two to three days on the carrier |
Delivery to the address is on the door to door page.
Additional services for individuals, companies and government bodies
The car is the subject of this article, but whoever ships it usually needs something else with it. Household furniture goes into its container as we explained. Electrical and electronic appliances are packed in wooden crates or their original cartons. Commercial goods are shipped with an invoice in the name of a Moroccan importer, detailed on the commercial shipping page. Urgent parcels and documents go ahead of the car by air, detailed on the parcel shipping page. The file differs by customer:
| Customer | Their usual need | What we prepare |
|---|---|---|
| An individual or a family | A car, and sometimes a whole home | A check of the age and the privilege, an itemised offer, and one person following up |
| A company or car showroom | A small fleet or repeat orders | A shipping schedule, containers for two cars, and an invoice and report for each chassis |
| A government body | Official vehicles or equipment taking part in an event | Official correspondence, scheduling ahead of the date, and documents matching the body’s request |
| An embassy or consulate | The car of a diplomat transferred to Rabat | A sealed container, and papers matching the exemption file the mission submits |
Land freight from the UAE to Morocco: is it possible?
There is no land freight for cars between the two countries, and we say so plainly so that you do not pay a deposit to someone who promises it. The road crosses the whole of North Africa and ends at a closed land border between Algeria and Morocco. So road transport in our service is confined to the two ends of the journey: the flatbed from your home to Jebel Ali or the airport, and the car carrier from the Moroccan port to your city. Real land freight from the UAE is to the neighbouring Gulf states, which you will find on the car shipping from Gulf countries page, and the comparison of all methods is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Air freight for cars from the UAE to Morocco
The aircraft cuts five weeks to less than one, and costs several times the ship. The car is handed over in the cargo area of Dubai International Airport, Al Maktoum Airport or Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, depending on the flight that accepts it. There it is secured on an aluminium air cargo pallet, strapped down by the wheels, then lifted into a freighter or into the lower hold of a wide-body aircraft. The destination is Mohammed V Airport, so clearance and then delivery take place in Casablanca, and from there on a closed carrier to any other city.

- Who it suits: luxury and urgent cars, such as a supercar whose owner does not want it lingering at sea, or a car needed for a show or an event on a set date.
- Time: 3 to 6 days from collection to delivery, including clearance at both airports.
- The carrier’s conditions: by air the car counts as dangerous goods, so very little fuel is required, a battery that is secured with its terminals insulated or disconnected, and a declaration prepared by an approved specialist.
- Price: set on request by weight and dimensions; we do not write a figure for it in advance.
Flying does not change Morocco’s rules: the age limit, the duties and the approval apply at the airport as at the port. Air freight for anything other than cars is on the air freight page.
Steps for shipping a car from the UAE to Morocco
The order of the steps matters, as most problems come from a step taken before its turn:
- You message us on 0552803439 with a photo of the registration card, the delivery city in Morocco, and whether the trip is temporary or permanent.
- We count the car’s age against the arrival date and clarify the entry regime and the estimated duties with the Moroccan customs broker.
- We send you the itemised offer with the method, the port and the expected time, and you approve and set the collection date.
- You pay the fines and obtain the bank’s notice if needed, then the tourism certificate or export certificate is issued.
- The partner agent arrives with the flatbed, the car is inspected with you, and the condition report is signed.
- It is loaded into the container and lashed, the furniture is stacked behind the partition if there is any, then the seal is fitted and photographed.
- The container enters Jebel Ali and sails, and you receive the bill of lading and the container number and the follow-up messages begin.
- The broker clears the car at the Moroccan port, it is taken to your address, and you inspect it and then receive the key.
Car shipping from Morocco to the UAE
In the opposite direction there are two cases. An Emirati car that has finished its holiday is shipped from Casablanca or Tanger Med to Jebel Ali before temporary admission runs out, and returns to its traffic file. A Moroccan-registered car enters the UAE as an import, and the rule in force there is customs duty of 5% of the value, value added tax of 5%, left-hand drive, and a technical inspection before registration. It is said that some emirates do not register an imported used car more than ten years old unless it is a classic, so we check before shipping. The destination page is shipping to the UAE.
Home Safe’s tips before shipping your car to Morocco
This is the gist of what we tell customers on the first call:
- Compare the figures before the feelings: what your car is worth in Morocco less the freight and the duties, against what it sells for in the UAE.
- Do not hand the plates to the licensing authority before the Moroccan broker’s confirmation of the entry regime reaches you.
- Obtain your residence and employment documents while you are still in the UAE, since getting them after the residence is cancelled is hard.
- Start arranging two months before your date for sea, and ten days for air.
How do you choose a car shipping company from the UAE to Morocco?
Every company writes the same words in its advertisements. What sets one apart from another shows when you ask it for specific details. Here are four signs we suggest you test any firm against, ourselves included:
| The sign | What it means | A worrying sign in contrast |
|---|---|---|
| It asks for the first registration date before pricing | It knows Morocco may refuse the car | It accepts any car without a question |
| It distinguishes the tourism certificate from the export certificate | It knows the Emirati procedure | It asks for the plates to be dropped in every case |
| It states its standing in the UAE clearly | It introduces you to the agent who will collect your car | Branch addresses that cannot be verified |
| It separates the Moroccan duties from its own charge | It does not hide the biggest item from you | An “all-inclusive” price with no items |
Common mistakes when shipping cars from the UAE to Morocco
We have seen these seven mistakes more than any others, and some of them cost more than the freight itself:
- Sending a car six or seven years old on the strength of undocumented talk that it will get in.
- Relying on the model year to count the age, when customs counts from the date of first registration.
- Requesting an export certificate for a car travelling for the summer, then discovering that bringing it back needs a new import.
- Shipping a mortgaged car before obtaining the bank’s approval, so that it stops at the port gate.
- Putting suitcases and gifts in the boot of the car inside the container without recording them on the list.
- Choosing the Moroccan port that is cheapest by sea and furthest from the delivery city.
- The owner staying in the UAE after the ship arrives, while claiming a privilege that requires their presence in person.

Frequently asked questions about car shipping from the UAE to Morocco
How do I know I am dealing with a dependable car shipping company from the UAE to Morocco?
By the first two questions it puts to you: when the car was first registered, and whether you are returning to Morocco or visiting. Anyone who starts with the price before those two questions does not know the route. Home Safe is a registered establishment in Jeddah that carries out collection and port work in the UAE through partner agents and runs the file with its own team; its number is 0552803439.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Dubai to Casablanca?
The price on the UAE route is set on request, because we found no reliable published price for this route to build on. What circulates for a private 20ft container is between AED 16,500 and 31,000, depending on the car and on what the offer covers. For comparison only, RoRo for a saloon on our line from Jeddah port to Moroccan ports starts from SAR 2,200.
How many days does the car need from Jebel Ali to Morocco?
By sea, between 30 and 45 days from the day it is collected at your home in the UAE to the day it leaves the Moroccan port and reaches your address. The sailing alone is about three weeks to Tanger Med and slightly more to Casablanca. By air, between 3 and 6 days including clearance.
Can a seven-year-old Emirati car enter Morocco?
As a rule it cannot be imported permanently, since the limit in force is five years from the date of first registration. The exception is a retired Moroccan returning after ten years of residence abroad, whose car is accepted up to ten years old. For everyone else there remains temporary entry on its Emirati plates. We confirm the rule in force before shipping.
What is the difference between the tourism certificate and the export certificate for my car in Dubai?
The tourism certificate is requested for a car that will leave and then come back, so it keeps its plates and its registration, and the practice in Dubai is that it is valid for six months. The export certificate is requested for a car that will not come back, so its plates are handed in, its file is closed and it is given temporary export plates. The first is for a summer in Morocco, the second for a final return.
My car is financed by a bank in Abu Dhabi. Can I ship it?
For a temporary trip it is possible if the bank sends a no-objection to the licensing authority, in which case the tourism certificate is issued with the lien still in place. Permanent export, however, depends on settling the finance and lifting the lien first. Start with the bank before we book the ship for you, as its reply takes days.
Can I put my household goods in the same container as the car?
Yes, and it is what most people returning for good do. A 40ft container is booked, the car is secured at its far end, a wooden partition is built behind it, and then the furniture is loaded. A detailed list of the contents is prepared in Arabic or French, because Moroccan customs examines the car in one file and the effects in another.
Which of the two ports is closer to my city: Casablanca or Tanger Med?
For Tangier, Tetouan, Larache, Fez and Oujda, Tanger Med is chosen. For Casablanca, Rabat, Kenitra, Marrakech and Agadir, the port of Casablanca is chosen. Tanger Med is days ahead at sea, but that lead disappears if the car is then going hundreds of kilometres south.
Is there land freight for cars from the UAE to Morocco?
No. The road crosses the whole of North Africa and ends at a closed land border between Algeria and Morocco, so no car carrier reaches Morocco overland. Road transport with us is two short legs: from your home to Jebel Ali or the airport, and from the Moroccan port to your city.
When is air freight for the car a sensible choice?
When the car is valuable or the date cannot wait: a sports car for an event, or a family car you want in Marrakech on the day you arrive. It leaves from UAE airports and is delivered in Casablanca within 3 to 6 days. The price is set on request and is several times the sea freight.
Does a Gulf-specification car need changes to run on Moroccan plates?
The steering wheel is on the left in both countries, so nothing changes there. But permanent import goes through individual approval and then a technical inspection, and in these you may be asked for the emissions document from the dealer, or about a lamp or a unit of measurement in the instrument cluster. We ask the customs broker about your model before the car moves.
Who pays the customs duties in Morocco, and how?
The owner of the car or the person holding their power of attorney pays them, at the port at the time of clearance, by the means the customs administration there accepts, whether bank or electronic payment. They are not part of the freight. We send you the broker’s estimate before sailing so that the amount does not surprise you.
Do you ship several cars for a company or a showroom on one voyage?
Yes. A 40ft container takes two mid-size cars, and a high-cube container may carry more on metal racks, depending on the dimensions. A separate condition report is written for each chassis, and the Moroccan age rule is checked for each car, since one car in breach stops the whole container at inspection.
How do I follow the car while it is at sea?
With the container number or the bill of lading number on the shipping line’s website, and with WhatsApp messages from us on entry to Jebel Ali, on the ship’s departure, on a change of ship if there is one, on berthing in Morocco, and on customs release. We do not promise you an app that shows its position at every moment, because a container on the open sea is not followed that way.
Do you bring my car back to the UAE after the summer?
Yes, and it is better to arrange the outward and return legs together. It is collected from your address in Morocco before the temporary admission period ends, sails to Jebel Ali, and returns to its traffic file on the same tourism certificate as long as it is valid, with no Emirati import duties.
