Who ships from Madinah to Sweden, and what do they ship?
The lane between Madinah and Sweden is quieter than the Jeddah and Riyadh lanes, but its users are well known. First comes the visitor who lives in Sweden, arrives for the visit and goes home with heavier bags than he brought. Then the scholarship student at the Islamic University who has finished his studies and returns to his family with a whole library. Then the doctor, nurse or engineer who worked for years in Madinah’s hospitals and projects and goes back with a household. Last comes the date trader who supplies community shops there. Each has a shipping method and a customs position:
| Shipper | What they ship | Best method | Position at Swedish Customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visitor living in Sweden | Excess bags, dates, prayer rugs and gifts | Air, per kilogram | Personal belongings and gifts within the limits |
| Student returning after graduation | Books, references, clothes and room items | Cartons in a shared container | Belongings of a person returning to his place of residence |
| Employee moving residence | Household furniture, appliances and sometimes a car | 20ft or 40ft container | Transfer-of-residence relief on application |
| Family sending to a relative | Ajwa dates, coffee and clothes | Air parcel | Gift between individuals within the value limit |
| Date trader and exporter | Packed dates and date products | Container or pallets per cubic metre | Duty by tariff heading plus tax |
| Government body and university | Documents, books and exhibits | Air for documents, sea for the rest | According to the consignee’s status |
The shipping route from Madinah to Sweden and its duration
A sea shipment from Madinah begins its journey on tarmac, not on water. The truck leaves the city southwards on the Hijrah expressway and reaches Jeddah port after roughly five hours. From there the container heads north up the Red Sea, passes through the Suez Canal, crosses the whole Mediterranean, then rounds western Europe into the North Sea. These are the stages, with their days, for a full container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Packing and loading in Madinah | Dismantling, numbering and inventory, then loading and sealing the container | 1–2 days |
| The road to Jeddah port | About 420 km by truck | One day |
| Jeddah Islamic Port | Export declaration and waiting for the vessel’s date | 3–6 days |
| Sailing | Suez, then a European transhipment port, then Gothenburg | 20–26 days |
| Clearance in Sweden | Import declaration and relief application, or payment of tax | 2–4 working days |
| Delivery to the address | Truck from Gothenburg, with unloading and arranging | 1–3 days |
The second table compares the total time for each method, from the door in Madinah to the door in Sweden:
| Method | Route | Time from Madinah | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | Madinah → Jeddah port → Gothenburg | 32–42 days | Household furniture or bulk goods |
| Sea part load | Consolidation warehouse, then a shared container | 37–44 days | Cartons and one or two rooms |
| Car in a container | Transporter to the port, then Gothenburg | 32–42 days | Cars of all kinds |
| Air | Madinah or Jeddah airport → Arlanda | 4–7 days | Baggage, dates, parcels and documents |
What lengthens the transit time?
- The vessel’s cut-off: if the truck from Madinah reaches the port after receiving has closed, the container waits for the next sailing, so we move it two days ahead of the cut-off.
- Visiting seasons: in Ramadan and the Hajj season Madinah’s roads fill up and truck movement is restricted, so loading slips unless it is booked early.
- Transhipment: the container changes vessel at a large European port, and a late first vessel makes it miss the second.
- Winter snow: the road from Gothenburg to Stockholm slows in snowstorms, adding a day to delivery.
Times for other destinations are on the transit times page.
Sea freight from Madinah to Sweden via Jeddah port and Gothenburg

Every sea shipment from Madinah has two ports: one it leaves from and one it arrives at. The port of departure is Jeddah Islamic Port, the largest on the Red Sea, with weekly services to northern Europe. The port of arrival is Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast, the largest container port in Scandinavia, from which trucks and trains leave for every city in the country. Between them is a third port you never see: the transhipment port, such as Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremerhaven, where the container moves from the large vessel to a feeder.
People in Madinah often ask us about Yanbu port, since it is two hundred kilometres closer. The answer is that distance alone is not enough. The container needs a vessel bound for northern Europe in its own week; that is available in Jeddah every week and is not guaranteed in Yanbu. So we check the sailing schedule at every booking and choose Yanbu when it truly serves your shipment.
| Comparison | Jeddah Islamic Port | Yanbu Commercial Port |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Madinah | About 420 km | About 220 km |
| Vessels to northern Europe | Weekly sailings by more than one shipping line | Depends on the schedule, and may not be available in the week of the shipment |
| Part loads | Consolidation warehouse and regular shared containers | We do not use it for them |
| When we choose it | In most bookings | For a full container when a suitable vessel exists |
Two container sizes matter to families: a 20ft box takes the furniture of a flat, and a 40ft box takes a whole house, or furniture together with a car. We book both sea legs on a single bill of lading from Jeddah to Gothenburg, so the consignee never deals with the transhipment port. The service is explained on the sea freight page, and the work at the port in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping prices from Madinah to Sweden
The invoice on this lane has four lines, not three. The first is the crew’s work in Madinah: dismantling, packing and loading. The second is the truck to Jeddah port, the line that someone living in Jeddah does not pay. The third is the sea or air freight. The fourth is what is paid in Sweden for clearance and delivery. We write each on its own line so you know where your money goes. These are the figures our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Baggage, dates and parcels | Air freight | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Parcel up to 5 kg | Express | SAR 110 |
| Furniture and belongings | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| Furniture of a whole house | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | By sea from Jeddah port | SAR 2,800 |
| Haulage from Madinah to Jeddah port | Truck or car transporter | Set on request |
| Commercial goods and bulk dates | Container or cubic metre | Set on request |
A worked example: a visitor from Örebro has finished his visit with a suitcase of clothes and a carton of Ajwa dates, and their chargeable weight is 18 kg. The air freight is 18 × 23, that is from SAR 414, and it reaches him at home a few days after his return. Had he ten cartons of books, the sea would be clearly cheaper for him.
Prices quoted in the market for this lane are few, as most of those offering the service from Madinah publish no figure. What circulates: between SAR 900 and 1,400 for a small parcel, between SAR 35 and 55 per kilogram for express air, around SAR 4,500 for part-load furniture, around SAR 9,000 for a shared container, and around SAR 12,000 for a car. Express couriers advertise that their international parcel starts from about SAR 250. These figures differ in where they end: some stop at the Swedish port and some reach the door, so ask about that before comparing.
| What sets the price | Its effect on a Madinah to Sweden shipment |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | Sea by the cubic metre and air by chargeable weight. Work out your volume with the CBM calculator |
| The road to the port | A whole truck for your container, or a place on the weekly consolidation run to Jeddah |
| The Swedish address | Stockholm is further from Gothenburg than Örebro and Linköping, and the northern cities are much further |
| Scope of service | To the quay in Gothenburg, or to the room with clearance and unloading |
| Packing | Counted by the number and kind of pieces, and higher for glass and appliances |
How do you cut the cost?
- Fit your date to the weekly consolidation run from Madinah to Jeddah, so you pay your share of the truck and not the whole of it.
- Sell in Madinah what will not work in Sweden, starting with motor-driven appliances that do not accept 50 Hz.
- Send books and heavy items by sea, and leave for air what you need in your first week.
- Prepare the relief papers before loading, as the tax is a quarter of the value.
The lines are detailed on the pricing factors page, and the container rate from the quay in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
What is distinctive about shipping from Madinah?
Madinah combines two things found together neither in Makkah nor in Jeddah: it has an international airport receiving flights from many capitals, and it has no sea. So anyone shipping by air starts from his own city, and anyone shipping by sea adds a day on the road to his journey. It also has a seasonal life that changes the shape of the work from month to month. These are the main things we weigh before fixing the loading day:
- The central area: no truck can stop at the hotels around the Prophet’s Mosque. We collect from them with a small vehicle and pack in our warehouse, not in the hotel lobby.
- Truck entry: the movement of large trucks towards the city centre is regulated by hours set by the traffic department, and they tighten in the seasons. We confirm the hours in force before the loading day.
- Level districts and wide streets: in most districts of Madinah the container tractor reaches the door of the house, so loading is direct with no shuttle vehicle.
- Heat and dryness: Madinah’s summer is hot and dry, so we load in the early morning and do not leave appliances, candles and toiletries in a closed truck at midday.
- The Haramain train: it is a passenger train and carries no cargo. But someone taking it to Jeddah airport can hand us his excess baggage in Madinah before boarding.
Moving household goods from Madinah to Sweden

Moving a home from Madinah to Sweden begins with a question about the second home, not the first. Houses in Madinah are spacious, with a majlis for men and another for women and large bedrooms. The Swedish flat is smaller and is often handed over with a fitted kitchen and built-in wardrobes. So we sit with you at the survey and split the furniture three ways: what ships, what is sold or given away in Madinah, and what is stored with the family. Then the crew comes and packs in your home what you have decided to ship.
- Packing in your home: the crew arrives with all its materials and packs room by room, so you gather nothing before it comes.
- Numbered cartons: every carton carries a number and the name of the room, and the same number appears in the inventory with a description of the contents in English.
- The inventory: it is the document Swedish Customs reads, so we write in it the number of pieces, their condition and their used value.
- Dismantling: bedrooms, wardrobes and dining tables are taken apart, and their screws go in a bag taped to one of the panels.
- Wood and upholstery: removal blankets and corrugated paper. We do not seal plastic tight on wood, because moisture stays trapped under it for five weeks.
- From dryness to cold: furniture from Madinah is dry, and the container cools in the North Sea so moisture condenses on its roof. We hang desiccant bags and keep the cartons off the metal walls.
After loading you sign the inventory and take your copy, and the container is sealed with a number you see with your own eyes. Details of the service are on the furniture shipping page, and the protection methods in the packing guide.
Full container or shared?
Choosing between them is first a matter of volume, then a matter of distance. Someone shipping a full container from Madinah has the box brought to his door and sealed there. Someone shipping a part load has his goods travel wrapped to the Jeddah warehouse, where they enter a container shared with others. The first means less handling, and the second costs less for those with little furniture. This is how to weigh it:
| Comparison | Shared container | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 cubic metres | 15–28 cubic metres | 30–60 cubic metres |
| Example from Madinah | A student’s library, or a bedroom and cartons | A flat of two or three rooms | A villa, or a house with a car |
| Where it is loaded | At the consolidation warehouse in Jeddah | In front of your home in Madinah | In front of your home in Madinah |
| Time to the door | 37–44 days | 32–42 days | 32–42 days |
| Price starts from | SAR 5,500 | SAR 11,000 for household furniture | Set on request |
What each container holds, in figures, is on the container sizes page.
Shipping and packing electronic and sensitive devices
Devices are what gets damaged most on a long shipment, and what Customs asks about most. So we handle them by three rules. The first is to make sure they work there: Sweden runs on 230 volts and 50 Hz, and its sockets take two round pins. The second is to pack each by its kind, not all in one way. The third is to write the serial number and value in the list, as that is what proves they are used and yours. This is what we do with each type:
| Device | Packing method | Note for Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Screens and televisions | Original carton or a wooden crate with foam over the face | Work with a plug adapter only |
| Computers and game consoles | Anti-static bags and a double-wall carton | Back up your data before shipping |
| Home medical and laboratory devices | Padded wooden crate, orientation label and shock indicator | Need a precise description in the declaration |
| Fridge, washing machine and air conditioner | Emptied, dried, and their moving parts secured | Not shipped if they do not accept 50 Hz |
| Batteries and power banks | Separated from the device where possible | Restricted by air; safest shipped by sea inside their devices |
All wooden crates are made of heat-treated timber bearing the ISPM 15 stamp, because raw timber is refused at the borders of the European Union. Securing methods inside the container are on the packing and lashing page.
Transfer-of-residence relief in Sweden
Anyone returning to Sweden after years of work in Madinah, or moving there for the first time, can bring in a household free of duty and tax. But the relief does not come automatically. It is applied for with Swedish Customs together with the import declaration, and whoever does not apply pays 25% tax on the value of the belongings plus their freight. These are its conditions in current practice, and we go over those in force before loading:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Length of residence abroad | At least one continuous year outside the European Union |
| State of the goods | Yours and used for at least six months before your move |
| Date of entry | Within a year of the date of your move |
| Restriction after entry | Not to be sold, hired out or lent for one year |
| Excluded | Alcohol and tobacco, and anything bought new and unused |
| Proof of the move | Registration in the Swedish population register or the residence permit |
From Madinah we prepare what proves the first half: a copy of the iqama and the final exit visa, the tenancy contract or the employer’s letter, and the inventory in English. This lane has one piece of good fortune: the container needs more than a month, so you reach Sweden ahead of it and register your address before it berths.
Visitors’ baggage, Madinah dates and express parcels
These are Madinah’s everyday shipments to Sweden, and all of them travel by air. The visitor buys more than his ticket allows, so he leaves the excess with us and travels light. Dates are every returning traveller’s gift, among them Ajwa, Safawi, Sukkari and Medjool from the central date market. And the express parcel carries papers, medicine or something left behind at the hotel. We treat each kind as it needs:
- Visitors’ bags: we collect them from the hotel, weigh them in front of you and record the contents in English. They are delivered in Sweden to the door of the home, so you do not go back to the airport for them.
- Dates: shipped in ventilated cartons that are not compressed, away from perfume and incense. Current European practice exempts dates from the plant health certificate, and we confirm the rule in force before shipping.
- Gifts from the visit: prayer rugs, prayer beads, thobes and copies of the Quran enter as personal belongings. Incense and liquid oud, however, are restricted by air.
- Express parcel: from SAR 110 up to 5 kg, reaching the main Swedish cities in 3 to 5 working days, with a tracking number and a signature on delivery.
- Documents: from SAR 83, in a waterproof envelope. They include attested certificates and the graduation papers a returning student is waiting for.
- Gift limit: current practice in Sweden exempts a gift between two individuals up to a value of 600 kronor, and anything above carries duty and tax. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Zamzam water: not shipped in a bag or a parcel; the traveller carries it with him in its dedicated pack.
How to prepare a parcel is on the parcel shipping page.
Urgent and emergency shipping to Sweden
Some shipments cannot wait a week. A passport left in the hotel safe, medicine for a patient who has gone back to Stockholm, a spare part on which a production line depends, a document needed for an appointment at the Migration Agency. For these cases there is a special track that cuts out every wait we are able to cut. We collect in hours rather than days and book the first flight with space, whether it leaves from Madinah airport or from Jeddah.
- Collection: on the day of the request inside Madinah, if the request reaches us before noon.
- Choice of airport: we compare the first flight from Madinah with the first from Jeddah plus the five hours of road, and take the one that arrives sooner.
- Pre-clearance: the shipment’s details go to the Swedish agent before take-off, so the procedure starts while the aircraft is in the air.
- Transit time: an urgent document usually reaches Stockholm in two to three working days, and we tell you the expected date before you pay.
Commercial goods and services for companies
The Madinah region is the Kingdom’s third-largest date producer, with packing plants and an industrial city. So most of what leaves it commercially for Sweden is dates and date products, followed by perfumes, textiles and gifts. The buyers there are community shops and oriental grocery chains. Goods entering Gothenburg enter the whole European Union market, so their papers are examined by its standards. This is what each item needs:
| Item | Shipping method | What it needs in Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Packed dates | Dry container in winter and reefer in summer | Label in Swedish, the importer’s name and address, and the best-before date |
| Perfumes and incense | Mostly by sea | Product file and a responsible person inside the Union |
| Samples | Air | Invoice stating they have no commercial value |
A company that ships regularly needs more than a price. We draw up a yearly plan for it: a full container in the demand season before Ramadan, consolidated pallets in the other months, and delivery in batches to the importer’s warehouse so that stock does not pile up. It receives a status report on every shipment and a tax invoice for every operation. The Swedish importer needs a European customs identification number before the vessel arrives. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Madinah to Sweden
A car travels the longest road of everything we ship from Madinah. It is photographed and inspected at your location, then loaded on a car transporter to Jeddah and not driven on the road. In the port yard it goes into a container, its wheels strapped down and braced with timber chocks. The price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port, and its transport from Madinah is set on request. But the freight is the smallest line in the sum, and the largest one waits for it in Sweden:
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before leaving the Kingdom | Export certificate and export plates from the traffic department, fines settled, and a clearance letter if the car is financed |
| Swedish Customs | 10% duty on the value plus freight, then 25% tax on the total, or the relief for those moving residence |
| Origin check | Application to the Swedish Transport Agency with the original registration and proof of ownership |
| Registration inspection | Technical inspection of lighting and emissions, which may require changes to Gulf specifications |
| Winter | Winter tyres in the winter months when roads are snowy, and a battery and fluids that withstand the cold |
Example: a car worth SAR 50,000 with freight of SAR 2,800. The duty is 10% of 52,800, which is SAR 5,280. The tax is 25% of 58,080, which is SAR 14,520. So the total is SAR 19,800 before the inspection and modifications. Someone bringing it in with the belongings of his move under the relief conditions does not pay that, but may not sell it for a year. Shipping methods are on the container car shipping page, and the general conditions in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Swedish customs and required documents
Every shipment from Madinah to Sweden has two customs files. The exit file we complete ourselves at the customs of Jeddah port or the airport with an export declaration. The entry file is completed by our agent before Swedish Customs with an import declaration. Sweden applies the Union Customs Code, and its 25% tax is calculated on the value of the goods plus freight, insurance and duty. These are the papers for each type:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture of someone moving residence | Passport, residence permit or proof of registration, relief application, inventory and bill of lading | Name matching the passport letter for letter |
| Baggage of a visitor or returning student | Passport, contents list and the home address in Sweden | A Swedish identity number, if there is one, speeds the procedure |
| Commercial goods | The seller’s commercial invoice with its packing list, a certificate of origin, the bill of lading, and the customs identification number held by the Swedish importer | For dates, the label and production date |
| Car | Original registration, export certificate, proof of ownership or purchase invoice, and passport | We review the registration rules before shipping |
| Parcel or gift | Sender’s ID and a statement of the items with the value of each | Consignee’s mobile for the arrival notice |
Small parcels do not enter without a declaration: every parcel from outside the Union is declared however low its value, and its tax is collected from the consignee before delivery unless we pay it for him in advance. Each paper is explained on the required documents page, and what happens at release on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Sweden or needs a permit
Most of what is held from Madinah shipments at the Swedish border comes from the kitchen and the gift bag. Home-made ghee among the pots, dried yoghurt and milk, or a decorated knife bought as a souvenir. And the European rule is strict on anything of animal origin. We go over the items with you during packing, and these are the main ones:
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy, ghee and dried yoghurt | Prohibited in personal baggage and parcels |
| Zamzam water | Not shipped; the traveller carries it in its dedicated pack |
| Dates, coffee, cardamom and dry spices | Accepted in a personal quantity in sealed packs |
| Medicines | Personal quantity with a prescription; some are classed as narcotics there |
| Knives, daggers and decorative swords | Declared to Customs, and many need a licence |
| Plants, seeds and palm offshoots | With a plant health certificate and a permit |
| Perfumes, liquid oud and aerosols | Restricted by air, and shipped by sea |
| Counterfeits | Seized and destroyed |
| Cash, gold and original documents | Stay with the traveller |
For the wider list see the prohibited items page. If an item leaves you in doubt, a photo sent to us before the carton is closed settles it.
Delivering Madinah shipments in Stockholm, Örebro and Linköping

After release in Gothenburg most shipments from Madinah head east. Stockholm, the capital, has the largest communities and the most addresses. Örebro is a university city in the middle of the country on Lake Hjälmaren. Linköping is a city of a university and technology industries in the county of Östergötland. All three lie on one axis between the west coast and the capital, so a single truck serves them on a single trip. The agent rings the consignee a day ahead to agree the hour of arrival.
| City | Distance from Gothenburg | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|
| Stockholm and its suburbs | About 470 km | A day’s haulage after release, a parking permit in the centre of the capital, and Arlanda airport to its north for air shipments |
| Örebro | About 280 km | Delivery the day after release; most addresses are blocks of flats with small lifts |
| Linköping | About 280 km | On the motorway to the capital, and from it we serve the surrounding area |
| Norrköping and Jönköping | 150–310 km | On the same route, so they are delivered on the way |
| Uppsala and Västerås | 380–450 km | North and west of the capital, a few hours more |
| Gothenburg and Borås | Up to 65 km | The nearest delivery, on the day of release or the next |
| Umeå and Luleå | 1,000 km or more | Two to four days, and longer in winter |
Delivery with us is not cartons left at the entrance of the building. The crew carries the pieces into their rooms by carton number, arranges the furniture where you point, reassembles what we dismantled in Madinah, then takes the empty packing materials away. Write us the address with its five-digit postcode, the flat number and the building’s door code, and state the floor and whether there is a lift. All our destinations are on the shipping destinations page.
Services for individuals, government bodies, companies and embassies
No two requests on this lane are alike. A family wants the whole burden carried for it. A university sends books and exhibits for a conference. The regional governorate and ministry branches send documents and publications. And diplomatic missions, whose seats are in Riyadh and Jeddah, sometimes ask us to move the belongings of a staff member who was on assignment in Madinah. So we arrange for each group what suits it:
| Customer | What they need | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Moving a home or baggage without tiring follow-up | Survey and itemised price, and one member of staff who follows up with you until delivery |
| Visitors | Shipping the excess from a hotel in the central area | Collection by a small vehicle and air freight to the door |
| Companies and factories | Regular shipments with papers in order | Contract, tax invoice and periodic report |
| Government bodies and universities | Documents and exhibits on a date that cannot slip | Confidential handling, and a collection and delivery record for every shipment |
| Embassies and consulates | Staff belongings and correspondence | Coordination with the administrative section and loading at a fixed time |
A diplomat’s shipment is cleared in Sweden according to his status and what its foreign ministry decides. We ask for the mission’s letter in the file, and we do not promise a relief that is not ours to give.
Air freight from Madinah to Sweden

Madinah has an international airport, and on most days that spares its air shipments the road to Jeddah. But there is no direct flight from it to Sweden. The shipment flies to a transit airport such as Istanbul, then continues on a second flight to Arlanda, north of Stockholm. When no suitable space is available, or the shipment is larger than those flights accept, we move it by road to King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah. Either way the time is 4 to 7 days from door to door.
- For whom: baggage, dates, parcels, documents and samples, and anything light in weight and close in deadline.
- Chargeable weight: the carton’s dimensions are measured in centimetres, multiplied together and divided by 6000, then the higher of that figure and the actual weight is taken. Try the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: a kilogram starts from SAR 23 and costs less the heavier the consignment is. An envelope of documents starts from SAR 83, and the smallest parcel, 5 kg or under, from SAR 110.
- Delivery in Stockholm: clearance at Arlanda, then a delivery van to the address in the capital on the same day or the next.
- Örebro and Linköping: the shipment reaches them from Arlanda by delivery van; each is about 200 km from the capital, which adds one day.
- What does not fly: perfume in quantity, aerosols, loose power banks and any flammable liquid.
The service is explained on the air freight page.
Air or sea? And is there land freight to Sweden?
The rule is simple: what is weighed in kilograms goes by air, and what is measured in cubic metres goes by sea. The line between them is at roughly 250 kg, after which the sea becomes cheaper even with its long wait. As for land, we do not rely on it to Sweden. The road crosses many countries and borders, and saves neither money nor time against a sealed container. So the truck’s part with us is at the two ends only: from Madinah to Jeddah port, and from Gothenburg to your door.
| Comparison | Air | Sea |
|---|---|---|
| Time from Madinah | 4–7 days | 32–44 days |
| Unit of charge | Kilogram of chargeable weight | Cubic metre or container |
| Price starts from | SAR 23 per kilogram | SAR 5,500 for a part load |
| Best for | Baggage, dates, parcels and documents | Furniture, cars and goods |
Each method is set side by side in our shipping methods comparison, and the last leg to your Swedish address is described under door-to-door shipping.
Collection from Madinah’s districts and governorates
Our crew reaches any address inside Madinah: Aziziyah, Difa, King Fahd district, Salam and Aqool in the west and north, Quba and Awali in the south, and Khalidiyah and Shuran in the east and south-east. We also collect from the governorates of the region, and their shipments join the same run to the port or the airport:
| Place | Distance from Madinah | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Districts of Madinah | Inside the city | From the door, with packing on site |
| Hotels of the central area | Inside the city | A small vehicle collects from reception |
| Al-Hanakiyah | About 110 km | Brought to Madinah before the day of departure |
| Badr | About 150 km | It lies on the coast road, so it is loaded on the way |
| Khaybar | About 170 km | By appointment once a week |
| Yanbu | About 220 km | Added to Madinah’s shipments or sent straight to Jeddah |
| Al-Ula and Mahd adh-Dhahab | Further than 230 km | The date is set on request |
The cities we cover in the Kingdom are on the service cities page.
Temporary storage and shipping in stages
The date for handing back the house in Madinah rarely matches the date for receiving the flat in Sweden. The tenancy ends at the close of the month, and Swedish housing takes weeks on waiting lists. So we separate the two dates with storage. The furniture leaves your home wrapped and inventoried for a closed, monitored warehouse, and stays on pallets raised off the floor until you give the word to ship it.
- Shipping in two stages: the family’s suitcases by air in the week of travel, and the container by sea once the address is settled.
- Short or long storage: from days to months, and you receive a photo of your shipment in the warehouse and a list of what it holds.
- Storage in Sweden: if the container arrives before the key, the agent keeps it in his warehouse and delivers on the day you choose.
The terms of the service are on the storage page.
Steps for shipping from Madinah to Sweden
- Contact: you write to us what you are shipping, your address in Madinah or the name of your hotel, and the Swedish city with its postcode.
- Status: visitor, returning to your place of residence, moving residence, or trader. We build the customs file on the answer.
- Survey and price: we estimate the volume by a visit or a video call, and the price reaches you with its four lines.
- Date: we book the vessel or the flight and fix the loading day according to the truck entry hours in force.
- Packing and loading: dismantling, packing and numbering in your home, then your signature on the inventory.
- Road and export: the truck delivers the container to Jeddah port or the shipment to the airport, and we complete the export declaration.
- Follow-up: the container number or air waybill, and a message at every stop.
- Delivery: the agent clears in Sweden and fixes the date with the consignee, then unloading, arranging and a signature on the delivery note.
Tracking and insuring the shipment
A shipment from Madinah passes through more hands than most: a truck, then a port, then two vessels, then a Swedish truck. Every handover is a point of question if damage occurs. So we record the condition at each one and give you the means to follow it yourself. The clock in Sweden is one hour behind Madinah in summer and two in winter, so you answer our messages during your day.
| Service | What you get |
|---|---|
| Sea tracking | The container number entered on the shipping line’s website, and a message from us at sailing, transhipment and berthing |
| Air tracking | The air waybill number followed with the airline as far as the arrival airport |
| Records | Photos of the pieces before packing, a photo of the container when it is sealed in Madinah, and the seal number |
| Basic insurance | Covers total loss of the shipment in transport accidents |
| Comprehensive insurance | Covers damage and partial loss on the value written against each item |
Insurance is optional, and we advise it for furniture, appliances and the car. At delivery open the fragile cartons while the crew is present and write your remark on the delivery note before signing, as it is the basis of any claim. The terms are on the cargo insurance page, and how to follow up on the track your shipment page.
Shipping from Sweden to Madinah
The opposite direction has its users too. A student accepted at the Islamic University sends his books and clothes ahead of his arrival. A Saudi family that has finished its scholarship in Linköping returns to its house in Madinah. A trader imports household utensils and Swedish furniture. Our agent collects from the address there, and the shipment takes the same road in reverse.
- By air: to Madinah airport or Jeddah airport, then to the address in Madinah.
- By sea: from Gothenburg to Jeddah Islamic Port, then 420 km by truck to Madinah.
- On arrival: what was used in Sweden enters the Kingdom on a contents list as personal effects. What was bought new pays the duty for its item and, on top, 15% value added tax.
- Commercial goods: anything subject to a Saudi technical regulation needs a certificate of conformity through the Saber platform before it ships.
Tips before shipping to Sweden
- Book the container seven weeks before you travel, as the day on the road to Jeddah and the transhipment time are added to the days at sea.
- Avoid having your loading day fall in the last ten days of Ramadan or in the days of Hajj.
- Ask the Swedish landlord for the floor plan and the measurements of the door and lift before deciding what to ship.
- Buy the dates a day or two before shipping, and ask for them in vacuum packs.
- Take out of the kitchen cartons anything containing ghee, yoghurt or meat.
- Keep the passport, residence papers and a copy of the inventory in your hand luggage, not in the container.
How do you choose a shipping company from Madinah to Sweden?
Most of those offering shipping to Europe in Madinah are intermediaries who hand your goods to another office in Jeddah. That is no fault if you are told so plainly, but it becomes a problem when responsibility is lost between the two. Put these questions before you pay, and compare what you hear:
| What you ask about | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Who hauls to the port? | A truck in the company’s name and a collection receipt in Madinah | “Take it to Jeddah yourself” |
| The Swedish port | Names Gothenburg and the transhipment port | “It reaches Europe and carries on from there” |
| Transit time | About six weeks, with the day on the road counted in | “Two weeks to the door by sea” |
| Swedish tax | Asks about your status and explains the relief application | “Used furniture carries no tax” |
| Where the price ends | Mentions clearance, unloading and arranging | A price that ends at the quay without saying so |
Common mistakes when shipping from Madinah to Sweden
- Forgetting the truck to Jeddah port when comparing offers.
- Fixing the loading day at the peak of a season without checking the truck entry hours.
- Putting packs of Zamzam water in the shipped bags, so the bag is sent back.
- Shipping furniture without the relief application, then paying a quarter of its value in tax.
- Mixing a large commercial quantity of dates with personal belongings in one declaration.
- Shipping air conditioners and washing machines that run on 60 Hz only.
- Writing a Swedish address with no door code for the building and no mobile number for the consignee.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Madinah to Sweden
What is the best shipping company from Madinah to Sweden?
The one that holds both ends of the road: a crew that comes into your district or hotel in Madinah, and an agent who clears the container in Gothenburg and brings it to your Swedish address. A good sign is that it explains how your goods get from a city with no port to the quay in Jeddah, and asks about your status in Sweden before quoting any figure. Home Safe is an establishment registered under number 4030601060, and its number is 0552803439.
How much does shipping from Madinah to Sweden cost?
Air freight starts from SAR 23 per kilogram, an envelope of documents from SAR 83, and a parcel of no more than 5 kg from SAR 110. By sea, part-load furniture starts from SAR 5,500, a household furniture container from SAR 11,000, and a saloon car from SAR 2,800. The truck between Madinah and Jeddah port is a separate line set on request according to the size of the shipment.
How many days does a shipment need from Madinah to reach Sweden?
A full container needs 32 to 42 days from the door in Madinah to the consignee’s door; one of those days goes on the road to Jeddah port and 20 to 26 days at sea. A part load needs 37 to 44 days because it waits for the shared container to fill. An air shipment needs 4 to 7 days.
Madinah has no port, so where does the container sail from?
From Jeddah Islamic Port for most shipments, about 420 km away, which the truck covers in roughly five hours. Yanbu Commercial Port is closer, at about 220 km, but we only book from it when a suitable vessel for the North European route calls there in the week of your shipment. We write the name of the port in the booking confirmation.
Is the container loaded at my home in Madinah or in Jeddah?
A full container comes empty to your door in Madinah, is loaded and sealed in front of you, then heads for the port without being opened on the way. A part load, on the other hand, travels wrapped in a closed truck to the consolidation warehouse in Jeddah, where it goes into the shared container with other people’s shipments.
Is there direct air freight from Madinah airport to Stockholm?
There is no direct flight between the two airports. The shipment flies from Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport to a transit airport such as Istanbul and then on to Arlanda. If no suitable space is available on the Madinah flights, we move it by road to King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah to fly from there. Either way it takes 4 to 7 days to the consignee’s door.
Can I ship Madinah dates to Sweden, and do they need a certificate?
Yes, and dates are among the commonest things leaving Madinah for Sweden. Current practice in the European Union is that dates are one of the few fruits exempt from the plant health certificate, so a personal quantity enters in its sealed pack with a note of the weight. A commercial quantity needs a label and an importer registered in Sweden. We confirm the rule in force before shipping.
Do you ship Zamzam water with the baggage?
No. Zamzam water is not accepted as cargo, neither in the container nor in an air parcel. The traveller carries the pack dedicated to him on his own flight, as far as the airline allows. We point this out to visitors when we collect their bags from the hotel, so that the bag is not sent back from the airport.
Will I pay tax on my used furniture when it arrives in Sweden?
You will not if you are moving your residence to Sweden and have lodged the relief application. Its conditions in current practice: you have lived outside the European Union for at least a year, the goods are yours and used, and they enter within a year of your move. Anyone who does not meet them is charged 25% value added tax and a duty by item.
Do you collect visitors’ bags from the hotels of the central area?
Yes. We send a small vehicle to the hotel, collect the bags and cartons from reception or from the room, weigh and photograph them, and give you a receipt. We do not need a large truck to enter the surroundings of the Prophet’s Mosque. They are then usually sent by air, so they reach your home in Sweden before you or follow a few days later.
Do you ship a car from Madinah to Sweden?
Yes. The car travels on a car transporter to Jeddah port, then goes into a container and is lashed inside it. The price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from the port. In Sweden it is charged 10% duty and 25% value added tax, unless it enters as part of the belongings of someone moving residence. It then goes through the origin check and the registration inspection before it carries Swedish plates.
Will my electrical appliances work in Sweden?
The voltage is close, as it is 230 volts there. The difference is in frequency: 50 Hz in Sweden and 60 Hz in the Kingdom. A computer, a screen and a charger work with a plug adapter only, because Swedish sockets take two round pins. For the fridge, washing machine and air conditioner, read the rating label; if 50 Hz is not written on it, do not ship them.
Do you deliver to Örebro and Linköping?
Yes. Both cities are about 280 km from the port of Gothenburg, and the truck reaches each of them the day after release. Stockholm is a little further, at about 470 km. Delivery includes carrying into the rooms, arranging the pieces and reassembling what was dismantled in Madinah.
Can I store my furniture if my home in Sweden is not ready?
Yes. The furniture stays wrapped and inventoried in a closed warehouse until you set the shipping date. We can also ship in two stages: urgent baggage by air now, and the furniture by sea once you receive the key to the flat. If the container arrives before you do, our agent keeps it in his warehouse in Sweden.
Do you ship from Sweden to Madinah?
Yes. Our agent collects from the Swedish address, and the shipment comes by air to Madinah airport or Jeddah airport, or by sea to Jeddah Islamic Port, and then we truck it to your home in Madinah. Used personal belongings are cleared on a contents list, and new goods carry a duty by item and 15% value added tax.
