Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Sweden, and what do they ship?

Most of those who ship to Sweden are families moving their residence, students at its universities, and Swedes who have finished working in the Kingdom and are returning. Each has a method that suits them.

Shipper What they ship Most suitable method
A family moving its residence Home furniture, appliances and belongings Full container or part load with the transfer-of-residence exemption
A student Cartons of clothes, books and personal items Shared boxes by sea, and an urgent carton by air
A Swede returning home Furniture, belongings and sometimes a car A container holding furniture and the car
A car owner An ordinary or luxury car In a container
A trader or exporter Dates, perfumes and Saudi products Container or by the cubic metre, and air for samples
Someone sending a gift or document A small parcel or papers Express shipping door to door

Route and transit time from Saudi Arabia to Sweden

Sweden is the farthest European destination from Jeddah by sea. The vessel crosses the Suez Canal and the whole Mediterranean, then sails round Spain and up to the North Sea. So the time is one to two weeks longer than to southern European ports.

Method Sailing or flight time Door to door Suits
Full container to Gothenburg 20–26 days 30–40 days A full home’s furniture and goods
Part load 22–30 days 35–42 days Under 15 m³ and students’ belongings
Car in a container 20–26 days 30–40 days Cars
Air to Stockholm Hours 3–6 days Urgent and light belongings

Most lines transship in Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremerhaven, then a smaller vessel sails to Gothenburg. We allow for that in the schedule.

What lengthens the time?

  • Transshipment: waiting for the feeder vessel at the intermediate port may add days.
  • Waiting for consolidation: a part load waits for the shared container to fill.
  • Missing paperwork: an exemption application not submitted, or a list without detail.
  • Winter: snow slows road transport to northern cities.
  • Holidays: July is a holiday month in Sweden, and work is slower.
  • Customs inspection: adds days if the container is selected for examination.

Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Sweden

The price is set by the method, the volume and the Swedish city. These are the starting prices of our services, and you receive your shipment’s price the same day if you send its details to 0552803439.

Service Price starts from
Sedan by sea SAR 2,800
Furniture and belongings, part load by sea SAR 5,500
Full home furniture container SAR 11,000
Air freight per kg SAR 23
Express parcel up to 5 kg SAR 110
Express documents up to 1 kg SAR 83
What sets the price Its effect
Volume or weight Work it out with the CBM calculator
Transport inside Sweden It is a long country: Umeå is about 1,000 km from Gothenburg
Packing A separate item, and essential for a cold, humid voyage of over a month
Season Delivery in the north is slower in winter
Insurance Optional, a percentage of the value

How do you lower the cost?

  • Dismantle beds, tables and wardrobes; volume is what you pay for.
  • Do not ship large old appliances; they cost less there than their freight.
  • Leave most summer clothes behind; the Swedish winter is long and wardrobes are small.
  • Ship a part load if your volume is under 15 cubic metres.
  • Book before summer, the season for movers and students.

Sea freight to Sweden: full container or part load?

Sea freight is the basis for anything large. The first question is whether you fill a container or share one.

Comparison Part load 20ft container 40ft container
Suitable volume Up to 15 m³ 15–28 m³ 30–60 m³
Suits A student’s belongings, one or two rooms A two- to three-room flat A villa, or furniture with a car
Charged Per cubic metre A price per container A price per container
Time Longer because of consolidation Shorter Shorter
Humidity protection By packing each item Moisture-absorbing bags for the whole container Moisture-absorbing bags for the whole container

Container dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the method is detailed on the sea freight page.

Packing shipments for a cold, humid voyage

Packing shipments bound for Sweden

The container leaves Jeddah in high heat and reaches the North Sea in the cold. That difference condenses moisture inside it, and moisture, not the route, is what damages furniture and electronics.

  • Moisture-absorbing bags: inside the container and inside electronics boxes.
  • Cartons: double-wall, and not touching the container walls.
  • Wooden and leather furniture: wrapped in paper then blankets, not in airtight plastic that traps moisture.
  • Wooden crates: of heat-treated wood with the ISPM 15 stamp.
  • Carpets: cleaned and dried completely, then rolled.

All the methods are in the packing guide.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Sweden

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Sweden

Freight is the smallest item in the sum for a car. Tax, inspection and preparing it for winter decide whether shipping it is worthwhile.

  • Charges: 10% customs duty on the value of the car and its freight, then 25% VAT on the total.
  • Origin verification: the first step with the Swedish Transport Agency, before any inspection.
  • Registration inspection: an individual technical inspection for a Gulf-specification car, which may need changes to lighting and emissions.
  • Winter tyres: mandatory from December to March when roads are in winter conditions. Fit them before driving.
  • Air conditioning and cooling: Gulf cars are built for heat. They need coolant and a battery suited to severe cold.
  • Under the exemption: the car of someone moving their residence enters on the ownership and use conditions.

A worked example: a car worth SAR 60,000 with freight of SAR 2,800.

Item Calculation Amount
Value with freight 60,000 + 2,800 SAR 62,800
Customs duty 10% 62,800 × 10% SAR 6,280
VAT 25% (62,800 + 6,280) × 25% SAR 17,270
Total before inspection and modifications 6,280 + 17,270 SAR 23,550

Do the sums before you ship: if you are not moving your residence, the taxes exceed a third of the car’s value. We work it out with you before booking.

The general conditions are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the method on the container car shipping page.

Movers’ furniture and belongings and the transfer-of-residence exemption

Anyone moving their residence to Sweden brings in their furniture and belongings free of duty and tax, on conditions:

  • Previous residence: at least 12 months outside the European Union.
  • Ownership and use: 6 months before the move.
  • No sale: for 12 months after entry.
  • Application: made to Swedish Customs with a list of contents and proof of both residences.
  • Personal identity number: being registered in the population register eases clearance, so ship after it if possible.

The exemption covers used items, not new ones. Anything you bought weeks before travelling and that is still in its carton is taxed. We prepare the list of contents in English during packing, carton by carton. Details are on the furniture shipping page.

Shipping students’ belongings to Sweden

Students in Uppsala, Lund, Stockholm and Gothenburg need their things, not a container. The cheapest way is for their cartons to travel in a consolidated container.

  • Shared boxes: numbered cartons for which you pay by volume only, far cheaper than excess baggage.
  • Winter clothes: buy them there; they suit the cold better and save you volume.
  • Timing: ship six weeks before you travel.
  • Urgent items: a carton or two by air for what you need in your first week.
  • Address: with the door code, the flat number and a Swedish mobile number.

Shipping commercial goods to Sweden

Sweden is a member of the European Union, so goods cleared there then move freely within the Union. That makes their paperwork more exacting than elsewhere.

  • Importer number: the Swedish importer needs a European customs identification number before the shipment arrives.
  • Duties: according to the European tariff heading for each product, plus VAT of 25% in most cases.
  • Conformity: appliances, toys and cosmetics have European conformity requirements.
  • Food: dates and plant products enter with a clear label, and animal products under strict health conditions.
  • Samples: go by air with an invoice stating they are samples of no commercial value.

Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Documents required for shipping to Sweden

Type of shipment Documents
Belongings and furniture Passport, residence permit, list of contents, and proof of previous residence
A car Registration, export certificate and purchase invoice
Commercial goods Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s European customs number
Parcels and gifts A description of the contents and their value, and the consignee’s address and mobile number

The documents are explained on the required documents page, and customs procedures on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Sweden or needs a permit

Item Rule
Meat, dairy and their products Prohibited in personal belongings
Medicines Personal quantities with a prescription; some are classed as narcotics there
Alcohol and tobacco Tight limits and high tax
Weapons and knives Strict rules
Plants and seeds With a phytosanitary certificate
Counterfeits Confiscated
Perfumes and batteries Conditional by air; shipped by sea

The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Stockholm

Air freight from Jeddah and Riyadh to Arlanda Airport delivers the shipment in 3 to 6 days, with a stop at an intermediate airport. It cuts five weeks at sea to under a week.

  • For whom: winter clothes and what a mover needs on arrival, and documents and samples.
  • Calculation: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: starts from SAR 23 per kg, and falls as the weight rises.
  • Service: to the airport, or to the consignee’s door with clearance.
  • What it does not suit: large furniture, which costs several times more by air than by sea.
