Who ships from Jeddah to Sweden, and what do they ship?
Jeddah is a city of port, trade and universities, and the people who leave it for Sweden differ in what they need. There are scholarship students admitted to Lund, Gothenburg and Uppsala, doctors and engineers who have signed employment contracts there, Swedes who spent years working in Jeddah’s hospitals and companies and are going home with their households, and families joining a relative settled in Malmö. Each of them has a different shipment and a different standing before Swedish Customs:
| Shipper | What they ship | Best method | Status at Swedish Customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scholarship holder and student | Books, winter clothes and room essentials | Cartons in a shared container, and a suitcase by air | Student relief with proof of enrolment |
| Someone moving for work or residence | Furniture, appliances and family baggage | A part load or a 20ft container | Transfer-of-residence relief by declaration |
| A Swede returning from work in Jeddah | A whole household and sometimes a car | A 40ft container | Returnee relief after temporary work, under its conditions |
| A family sending to a son or relative | Clothes, dates, coffee and gifts | An air parcel | A gift between individuals within the value limit |
| Trader and factory | Dates, perfumes, packaging materials and samples | A container or by the cubic metre, and air for samples | Duty by tariff heading and 25% tax |
| Government body and consulate | Documents, exhibits and staff baggage | Air for documents, sea for baggage | According to the consignee’s status |
The shipping route from Jeddah to Sweden and its duration
Sweden is among the farthest points a Jeddah container reaches in Europe. The vessel leaves the Red Sea through the Suez Canal, crosses the Mediterranean from east to west, then rounds the Iberian Peninsula and climbs the Atlantic to the North Sea. Its voyage is therefore about a week longer than one to a southern European port. What matters to you is not the days at sea alone, but the time between loading your home in Jeddah and unloading it in Sweden, and this is the breakdown for a full container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Packing and loading in Jeddah | Dismantling, numbering and inventory, then loading the container | 1–2 days |
| Jeddah Islamic Port | Export declaration, handing over the container and waiting for the vessel | 3–6 days |
| Sailing | Suez, the Mediterranean, the transhipment port, then Sweden | 20–26 days |
| Swedish clearance | Import declaration and the relief declaration or payment of tax | 2–4 working days |
| Delivery inside Sweden | Truck from the port to the address, with unloading | 1–3 days |
These are the times by shipping method, counted from the door of the home in Jeddah to the consignee’s door:
| Method | Route | Time from Jeddah | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | Jeddah port → Gothenburg or Helsingborg | 30–40 days | Household furniture and bulk goods |
| Sea part load | A shared container sorted on arrival | 35–42 days | Students’ cartons and one or two rooms |
| Car inside a container | Jeddah port → Gothenburg | 30–40 days | Cars of all types |
| Air | King Abdulaziz Airport → Arlanda or Landvetter | 3–6 days | Baggage, parcels, documents and samples |
What lengthens the time?
- The transhipment port: if the container misses the feeder vessel it waits for the next one, which adds days we cannot shorten.
- The vessel’s route: some lines at times sail round the Cape of Good Hope instead of the Suez Canal, adding one to two weeks. We tell you your voyage’s route on the booking day.
- The northern winter: snow slows trucks heading beyond Stockholm, and some Baltic ports are affected by ice.
- The Swedish summer holiday: in July working hours shrink in warehouses and offices, so release and delivery slip.
- An incomplete declaration: a vague contents list or an unsigned relief declaration holds the container at the port at its owner’s expense.
Times for the other destinations are on the transit times page.
Sea freight from Jeddah to Sweden via Gothenburg and Helsingborg

Sweden has two ports that concern anyone shipping a container from Jeddah. The first is Gothenburg on the west coast, the country’s largest container port and its gateway to the ocean, from which trucks and trains fan out to every city. The second is Helsingborg on the Öresund strait in the south, Sweden’s second container port, serving the Skåne region where Malmö and Lund lie. We choose between them by your address, not by what is easier for us.
The large vessels leaving Jeddah do not call at Sweden on most voyages. They discharge the container at a hub port in northern Europe, and from there a feeder vessel completes the trip in two to four days. That is why we book both legs together on one bill of lading from Jeddah port to the Swedish port, so neither you nor the consignee has to deal with the transhipment port.
| Comparison | Port of Gothenburg | Port of Helsingborg |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The west coast on the North Sea | The south, on the Öresund strait facing Denmark |
| Standing | Sweden’s largest container port | Sweden’s second container port |
| How a Jeddah container reaches it | By feeder vessel, and sometimes on a direct line from a major European port | By feeder vessel from the transhipment port |
| Cities it serves | Gothenburg, Borås, Jönköping, Stockholm and Uppsala | Helsingborg, Lund, Malmö and Kristianstad |
| When we choose it | For most shipments, and for cars and part loads | For a full container with an address in the south |
A part load does not choose its port. It travels with others in a shared container that is usually opened in a warehouse in Gothenburg, and each shipment then completes its journey by truck. Jeddah Islamic Port gives this route a clear advantage, as it lies on the Red Sea itself and its vessel reaches the entrance of the Suez Canal in under two days. The service is explained on the sea freight page, and how the port works in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping price from Jeddah to Sweden
The price on this route is made up of three parts: what is paid in Jeddah for packing, loading and export; the sea or air freight; and what is paid in Sweden for clearance and inland haulage. Anyone shipping from Jeddah saves an item others pay, the road haul to the port, because the port and airport are in their own city. These are the figures our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Baggage, parcels and samples | Air from King Abdulaziz Airport | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Parcel up to 5 kg | Express | SAR 110 |
| Furniture and baggage | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| Full household furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | By sea from Jeddah port | SAR 2,800 |
| A student’s cartons | Shared box by sea | Set by the number of cartons |
| Commercial goods and equipment | Container or cubic metre | Set on request |
An air example: a mother in Al-Rawdah district sends her son in Lund two cartons of winter clothes and dates with a chargeable weight of 30 kg. The freight is 30 × 23, that is from SAR 690. Had there been eight cartons, the shared sea box would have been far cheaper, provided they are handed over six weeks before travel.
Prices circulating in the market for this route are few and far apart, and most of those advertising the service publish no figure and settle for promising a discount. The figures in circulation: about SAR 350 for an air parcel of up to 5 kg, about SAR 500 for an urgent parcel, between SAR 900 and 950 for a 20 kg parcel, around SAR 2,000 for a small sea part load, and around SAR 4,500 for a full container port to port. The last two include neither packing, nor Swedish clearance, nor delivery, so before comparing ask: where does this price end?
| What sets the price | Its effect on a Jeddah-to-Sweden shipment |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The cubic metre by sea and chargeable weight by air. Estimate it with the CBM calculator |
| The Swedish city | The country is very long, and Umeå is about 1,000 km from Gothenburg |
| Scope of service | To the Swedish port, or into the room with clearance and unloading |
| Packing | A separate item, and higher for a trip that moves from Jeddah’s heat to the northern cold |
| Difficulty of access | An old building without a lift, or a pedestrian street the truck cannot enter |
| Season | Late summer sees more demand because of student travel |
How do you lower the cost?
- Do not ship motor-driven appliances that do not accept 50 hertz; you would pay their freight and then find they do not run.
- Leave most of your summer clothes in Jeddah; the Swedish summer is short and flat wardrobes are small.
- Dismantle everything that can be dismantled, since the charge is on volume, not on the number of pieces.
- Pool your cartons with those of fellow scholarship students on one loading day.
- Complete the relief papers before loading; the 25% tax is bigger than any reduction in the freight.
The pricing factors page goes through these items one by one. Anyone who wants the container freight alone from the Jeddah quay will find it in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
Shipping prices by Swedish city and transport method
The sea freight is nearly the same whichever Swedish city is yours, because the container lands at the same port. What changes is the road from the port to the door. By air, what changes is the airport nearest to you. The table below therefore combines the price the service starts from with what is added by city; inland haulage is set on request because it follows the volume and the address:
| City | By sea: part-load furniture starts from | By air: a kilogram starts from | Haulage inside Sweden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gothenburg | SAR 5,500 | SAR 23 | The lowest, as the port and Landvetter airport are in the city |
| Malmö and Lund | SAR 5,500 | SAR 23 | About 270 km from Gothenburg, or a short distance from Helsingborg |
| Stockholm | SAR 5,500 | SAR 23 | About 470 km by sea routing, with Arlanda airport close by for air |
| Uppsala | SAR 5,500 | SAR 23 | About 450 km by sea routing, with Arlanda between it and the capital |
| Umeå and Luleå | SAR 5,500 | SAR 23 | The highest, and set on request |
What sets shipping from Jeddah to Sweden apart?
A shipper in Jeddah starts from a position no one else in the Kingdom has. The port the container sails from is in the south of the city, the airport the shipment flies from is in its north, and the farthest district is under an hour from either. There is no intercity truck run and no extra day before the real journey begins. But the city also has things that must be planned for:
- Humidity: Jeddah’s air is humid most of the year. Furniture is therefore packed in your home and enters the container the same day, and is not left wrapped for days in an open yard.
- Truck movement: entry of large trucks to the city’s main roads is regulated by hours set by the traffic department. We confirm the hours in force before loading day and set the appointment around them.
- The Hajj and Umrah season: the port and airport serve the pilgrims, so the roads to them are crowded in Ramadan and Dhul-Hijjah. Anyone travelling right after the season books their loading before it.
- The old districts: Al-Balad, Al-Kandarah and Al-Hindawiyah have alleys a container cannot enter, so we shuttle with a small vehicle to a nearby loading point.
- Towers and compounds: in the Corniche towers and gated residential compounds we book the service lift and obtain the crew’s entry permit from the management in advance.
Our other services in the city are in the article international shipping companies in Jeddah.
Shipping household furniture from Jeddah to Sweden and packing it
Before we ask about the volume of your furniture we ask about the flat waiting for it. Swedish flats are tidy and small, and many are let with a full kitchen and built-in wardrobes. A bedroom set with a tall wardrobe, a dining table for ten, or a long Arabic majlis may find no place. At the survey we sort with you what ships and what is sold in Jeddah, then we pack what you decide to ship for a journey that begins in heat and ends in cold.
- Survey: a visit or a video call in which we list the pieces and ask you for the plan of the Swedish flat or the measurements of its door and stairs.
- Dismantling: whatever is held together by screws comes apart before packing. We number the panels of every bed, wardrobe and table, and tape the bag of metal fittings to one of them.
- Wood and leather: paper then moving blankets, not tight plastic wrap that traps moisture beneath it for five weeks.
- Inside the container: desiccant bags hung on the walls, and double-wall cartons that do not touch the metal.
- Glass and screens: foam and reinforced corners, and crates of heat-treated timber stamped ISPM 15.
- Carpets: washed and fully dried before rolling, as any dampness turns to mould once the air cools in the North Sea.
- In Sweden: unloading into the rooms, reassembling what was dismantled, and removing the empty cartons.
The reason for all this is that the metal container leaves Jeddah port hot, then cools day after day as it climbs north, so water vapour condenses on its roof and drips. Service details are on the furniture shipping page, and packing methods in the packing guide.
A full container or a shared container?
A full container is loaded in front of your home, sealed, and opened only at the consignee’s. A shared container gathers your shipment with those of others at our warehouse, and you pay only for the cubic metres you occupy. The first is faster with less handling, and the second is cheaper for anyone who does not fill half a container. Volume is what settles the choice:
| Comparison | Shared container | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 cubic metres | 15–28 cubic metres | 30–60 cubic metres |
| Example | A student’s cartons, or one or two rooms | A flat of two to three rooms | A villa, or furniture with a car |
| Time from Jeddah | 35–42 days | 30–40 days | 30–40 days |
| Swedish port | Usually Gothenburg | Gothenburg or Helsingborg | Gothenburg or Helsingborg |
| Price starts from | SAR 5,500 | SAR 11,000 for household furniture | Set on request |
Internal dimensions and what each container holds are on the container sizes page.
Transfer-of-residence relief in Sweden
Anyone moving their normal place of residence to Sweden pays neither duty nor tax on personal effects and used furniture, provided they ask for it. Swedish Customs does not grant the relief of its own accord, but on a specific declaration lodged with the import declaration; without it, charges are levied in full. These are its conditions in current practice, and we go over those in force with you before we load:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Previous residence | Normal residence outside the European Union for at least one continuous year |
| Ownership and use | The goods owned and used before the move, and a car for at least six months |
| Import deadline | Within a year of the date you moved to Sweden |
| After entry | Not sold, lent or transferred for a full year |
| Not covered | Alcohol and tobacco, and new items that have not been used |
| Proof of the move | Notification of the move to the Swedish Tax Agency, or the residence permit |
| Returning after temporary work | A separate relief if they worked outside the Union for at least six months |
From Jeddah we prepare half the file for you: a contents list in English written during packing, and proof of your residence in the Kingdom such as a registered tenancy contract, an electricity bill or an employer’s letter. The other half is with you in Sweden: your entry in the population register and your personal identity number if issued. The safest order is to travel first and register your address, with the container arriving weeks after you, which happens of itself because the sea takes more than a month.
Shipping students’ and scholarship holders’ belongings from Jeddah to Sweden

A student travelling from Jeddah to a Swedish university does not need a container. They need six or ten cartons to reach a room in student accommodation without paying excess baggage at the airport. There are two ways: a carton in a shared container charged by its volume, or air freight charged per kilogram. Most combine the two, sending the heavy items by sea before travelling and taking what the first week requires by air.
- Books: heavy and compact, so they belong at sea. They go in small cartons of no more than 20 kg each, so the student can carry one up the stairs.
- Winter clothes: the heavy coat and lined boots are usually bought there, as they suit that cold better. Ship the woollens and thermal underwear you already have.
- Room essentials: a prayer mat and Quran, a coffee pot and cups, a pressure cooker and spices, and a duvet if you have one.
- By the carton or by the kilo: five cartons or more go by sea, and fewer than that, or anything urgent, goes by air from SAR 23 per kilogram.
- Timing: term begins at the end of August, so anyone who wants their cartons at the start of studies hands them over in the first half of July.
- Delivery at the student accommodation: we write the building name, corridor and room number, postcode and a mobile number. If accommodation has not yet been allocated, the cartons stay in the agent’s warehouse until the address reaches us.
In current practice at Swedish Customs, a student enrolled full-time brings in personal belongings free of duty and tax as long as they are for their own use during their studies. So we attach the admission letter or enrolment certificate to the shipment. The university cities we deliver to most: Lund, Gothenburg, Uppsala, Stockholm, Linköping and Umeå. How boxes are shipped is on the parcel shipping page.
Parcels, gifts and documents to Sweden
Most of what leaves Jeddah for Sweden by air is small parcels: Eid clothes, a box of dates, an abaya, and attested papers awaited by a university or the migration authority. These are handed to us today, weighed and photographed, and leave on the nearest flight. A document differs from a parcel: it ships in a waterproof envelope with its own tracking number and is delivered against its owner’s signature.
- Parcel: starts from SAR 110 up to 5 kg, then from SAR 23 for each kilogram of chargeable weight.
- Documents: start from SAR 83 up to one kilogram, and arrive in 2 to 4 working days in the main cities.
- A gift between individuals: in current practice it is exempt up to a value of 600 Swedish kronor, provided it goes from one individual to another, without payment and not repeatedly. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Above the limit: 25% tax and a duty are charged, paid by the consignee before delivery unless you ask us to pay them on their behalf.
- Dates, coffee and cardamom: no objection as long as the quantity is for one household rather than a shop, and the pack is sealed and shows what is inside.
- Declaration: each item by name, number and value in English; the word “gifts” alone delays the parcel.
Shipping commercial goods from Jeddah to Sweden
Jeddah is a wholesale market and an industrial city, and from it dates, food products, oriental perfumes and packaging materials leave for Sweden. Sweden is a member of the European Union, so goods cleared in Gothenburg then move freely to Denmark, Finland and Germany. Their papers are therefore checked to the standard of the whole Union, and the Swedish importer is the one answerable for their conformity before the authorities.
| Item | Shipping method | What it needs in Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and date products | Dry or refrigerated container | A label in a language the consumer understands, and the European importer’s name and address |
| Food of animal origin | Refrigerated | A veterinary certificate and entry through an approved border control post |
| Perfumes and cosmetics | Sea, and air under flammable-goods restrictions | A responsible person inside the Union and a product file |
| Appliances and toys | Sea or air | The European conformity mark and its documentation |
| Packaging materials and plastics | Full container on pallets | A declaration of compliance for food-contact materials |
| Samples | Air | An invoice stating it is a sample of no commercial value |
The importer needs a European customs identification number before the vessel arrives, and the entry summary declaration is lodged before the container is loaded in Jeddah. Duty follows the European tariff heading for each product, with 25% tax on top in most cases and a lower rate for food. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Jeddah to Sweden
The freight for a car is the smallest number in its account. What decides whether shipping it is worthwhile comes after the port: duty and tax, then the registration procedure, then preparing it for a winter it was not built for. That is why we work out the whole picture with you before booking. The car leaves Jeddah port inside a container, secured with straps and timber chocks, and the price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon.
| Step in Sweden | What happens |
|---|---|
| Customs clearance | 10% duty on the value plus freight, then 25% tax on the total, or the relief for those moving residence |
| Verification of origin | An application to the Swedish Transport Agency with the original registration certificate, proof of ownership and proof of clearance |
| Registration inspection | A technical inspection reviewing lighting, emissions and specifications, which may require modifications to a Gulf-specification car |
| Insurance and plates | Third-party liability insurance from a Swedish insurer before driving |
| Winter preparation | Winter tyres from December to March when roads are wintry, and coolant and a battery that withstand the cold |
An example: a car worth SAR 40,000 with freight of SAR 2,800. The 10% duty on 42,800 equals SAR 4,280, and the 25% tax on 47,080 equals SAR 11,770, so the total is SAR 16,050 before inspection and modifications. Someone who brings it in among the effects of a transfer of residence, having owned and used it for at least six months, does not pay this amount, but may not sell it for a year. Shipping methods are on the container car shipping page, and the general conditions in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Swedish customs and the documents required
Sweden applies the unified European customs system and adds a 25% value added tax, one of the highest rates in the Union. The tax is not calculated on the price of the item alone, but on the price plus freight, insurance and duty. So for every shipment that does not enter under a relief, the owner pays roughly a quarter of its value. This is the file for each type:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and effects of someone moving residence | Passport, residence permit or notification of move, relief declaration, contents list and bill of lading | The name on the bill as in the passport |
| A student’s belongings | Passport and residence permit for studies, admission or enrolment letter, and contents list | The accommodation address in full |
| Commercial goods | The sales invoice, the packing list, the bill of lading, the certificate of origin, and the Swedish importer’s European customs identification number | Extra certificates for food and cosmetics |
| Car | Original registration certificate, export certificate, purchase invoice or proof of ownership, and passport | Registration rules are reviewed before shipping |
| Parcel or gift | Sender’s ID, and a statement of the items and their value | The consignee’s mobile number is essential for the delivery notice |
The papers for leaving the Kingdom are ours to handle: an export declaration completed at Jeddah port customs or at the airport before the shipment moves. If you are a resident departing on a final exit, we may need a copy of your visa. Every document above has its explanation on the shipping documents page, and what happens at release is set out on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Sweden or needs a permit
Most of what is held from Jeddah shipments at the European border is not some dangerous contraband, but food from the kitchen. A tin of ghee, labneh or dried meat placed among the cookware is enough to have the carton opened and the whole shipment delayed. We go through the list with you during packing, and these are its main lines:
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy, ghee and cheese | Banned in personal baggage and parcels |
| Medicines | A personal quantity with a prescription; some painkillers and sedatives are classed as narcotics there |
| Alcohol, tobacco and nicotine products | Outside the relief and under special duties |
| Weapons, daggers and ornamental swords | Declared to customs, and most need a Swedish licence |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Ivory, coral and skins of protected species | Banned without the international convention certificate |
| Counterfeits | Seized and destroyed |
| Perfumes and lithium batteries | Restricted by air, and shipped by sea |
| Cash, gold and original documents | Stay with the traveller and are not shipped with furniture |
The general list is on the prohibited items page. Anything you doubt, photograph and send before the carton is sealed over it.
Delivering shipments from Jeddah in Gothenburg, Malmö, Lund and the other cities

Once the container is landed on the quay, our agent in Sweden takes over. They lodge the import declaration with the relief declaration or collect the tax, and when customs releases it they call the consignee to agree the delivery day. The truck then comes to the address, and the crew carries the pieces into the rooms and reassembles what was dismantled in Jeddah. The three cities that receive most of what we ship are Gothenburg, where the port is, Malmö, the country’s third city, and Lund, the university city next to it.
| City | Distance from Gothenburg | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|
| Gothenburg and Borås | Up to 65 km | Delivery on the day of release or the next, with tram lines in the city centre restricting where the truck can stop |
| Helsingborg | About 215 km | It has the second port, so its container is cleared and delivered in the city itself |
| Lund | About 260 km | A university city where most shipments go to student rooms, with narrow streets in its old centre |
| Malmö | About 270 km | About 65 km from Helsingborg, and many of its old buildings have no lift |
| Jönköping and Linköping | 150–280 km | On the road to the capital, and delivered on the Stockholm run |
| Örebro and Västerås | 280–380 km | Industrial cities in the centre |
| Uppsala and Stockholm | 450–470 km | A day of haulage after release, and a parking permit in the centre of the capital |
| Umeå, Luleå and Kiruna | 1,000 km and more | Two to four days, and more in winter |
Write the address as it is written there: the street name and building number, the four-digit flat number, the five-digit postcode, the door code of the building, and a Swedish mobile number. State the floor, whether there is a lift and how wide its door is. With this information the agent decides the size of the truck and the number of workers before setting off. All our destinations are on the shipping destinations page.
Services for individuals, companies, embassies and consulates
Jeddah has consulates, representative offices, company headquarters and branches of government bodies, alongside families and students. Each group asks something different of shipping. An individual wants someone to carry the whole burden. A company wants a fixed date and a tax invoice. A consulate wants a procedure that respects the nature of the shipment and the date of the staff member’s transfer. So we arrange the service like this:
| Client | What they need | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Moving a home or baggage without daily follow-up | A survey, an itemised price, and one member of staff who answers you from loading to delivery |
| Students | A few cartons at the lowest cost | Shared boxes and loading dates ahead of the start of term |
| Establishments and companies | Repeat shipments and orderly paperwork | A contract, a tax invoice, and a status report on every shipment |
| Government bodies and universities | Exhibits, delegations, books and research equipment | Commitment to the event date, and return of what comes back afterwards |
| Embassies and consulates | Baggage of transferred staff and correspondence | Coordination with the administrative section, and loading by appointment with an entry permit |
A transferred diplomat’s effects are cleared in Sweden according to their status and what its foreign ministry decides, so we ask for the mission’s letter in the file and do not promise a relief we cannot grant.
Air freight from Jeddah to Sweden

The aircraft cuts five weeks to less than one. The shipment enters the cargo village at King Abdulaziz Airport in north Jeddah, where it is weighed, measured and security-screened, then flies to a hub airport and on to Arlanda near Stockholm, or to Landvetter near Gothenburg. The time from the sender’s door in Jeddah to the consignee’s door is 3 to 6 days, with roughly one more day for cities far from the two airports.
- For whom: urgent baggage and parcels, the winter clothes someone moving needs on arrival, documents, samples and spare parts.
- How the weight is worked out: we weigh the carton and measure its length, width and height in centimetres. We multiply the three and divide the result by 6000, and you pay for whichever of the two weights is higher. The volumetric weight calculator gives you the answer before you call.
- The charge: a kilogram of air cargo to Sweden from SAR 23, with heavier weight bands priced lower. An envelope holding papers only is from SAR 83, and the smallest parcel, meaning no more than 5 kg, from SAR 110.
- Delivery to the address: clearance at the arrival airport, then a delivery van to the home or student accommodation, or collection from the airport for those who prefer it.
- What is not loaded by air: loose lithium batteries, pressurised containers, perfumes in quantity, and any flammable liquid.
- What it does not suit: household furniture, whose air freight is many times the sea freight.
Service details are on the air freight page, and our office in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Types of shipping: land, air and sea
Shipping to Sweden is by air or by sea. Land has a role with us only at the start and end of the journey: a closed truck moving the shipment from your home or warehouse to Jeddah port or the airport, and a Swedish truck moving it from the port to the address. We do not rely on a full overland route to Sweden, as it crosses many countries and several borders, and the sea container arrives sealed at a lower cost.
Anyone moving with a family combines the two routes in one file: two or three suitcases by air holding what the first weeks require, and the whole home in the container. The full comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page, and the delivery-to-address service on the door-to-door shipping page.
Collection from Jeddah’s districts and nearby towns
Jeddah stretches along the coast for more than sixty kilometres, from Al-Khumrah in the south to Obhur Al-Shamaliyah and Dhahban in the north. We send the crew to any district: Al-Hamra, Al-Rawdah, Al-Zahra, Al-Salamah, Al-Naeem, Al-Mohammadiyah and Al-Shati in the north and centre, Al-Safa, Al-Marwah, Al-Samer and Al-Ajaweed in the east, and Al-Balad, Al-Kandarah and Al-Baghdadiyah in the old city. We also collect from the surrounding towns and add their shipments to the Jeddah container:
| Place | Distance from Jeddah | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Jeddah’s districts | Inside the city | From the door, with dismantling and packing on site |
| Obhur and Dhahban | Up to 45 km north | On the loading day itself, and close to the airport |
| Thuwal | About 80 km | Researchers’ and students’ baggage from the university town, by appointment |
| Rabigh | About 150 km | Brought to the Jeddah warehouse a day ahead |
| Bahrah and Usfan | 35–55 km | A small truck on the same day |
| Makkah | About 80 km | According to the truck entry hours in force there |
| Taif | About 170 km | Added to the Jeddah run by appointment |
If you hand back your home in Jeddah before your Swedish flat is ready or before your residence permit is issued, your furniture stays in our closed warehouse, packed and inventoried, and we load it when you give the word. Our agent does the same in Sweden if the container arrives before you receive the key. The terms are on the storage page, and the cities we cover on the service cities page.
Steps for shipping from Jeddah to Sweden
- Request: you send us what you are shipping, your district in Jeddah, the Swedish city and its postcode, and your travel date.
- Establishing your status: moving residence, student, returnee or trader. The customs file is built on it.
- Survey and price: we estimate the volume, suggest sea, air or both, and you receive an itemised price.
- Paperwork: we write the contents list in English and prepare the relief declaration and its attachments with you.
- Packing and loading: dismantling, packing and numbering in your home, and your signature on the inventory.
- Port or airport: the export declaration, then the container handed to the shipping line or the shipment to the cargo village.
- Follow-up: you receive the container or waybill number, and a message on sailing, transhipment and arrival.
- In Sweden: our agent completes customs and calls the consignee to set the day. The pieces then go into their rooms, what was dismantled is put back together, and the consignee signs the note.
Customer support, shipment tracking and insurance
Five weeks is a long time for someone waiting for their home in a container. Follow-up with us is not a tracking link we send before vanishing. Each shipment has one member of staff whose name and number you know, who answers from seven in the morning to eleven at night and tells you what is new before you ask. The time difference between Jeddah and Sweden is only an hour or two, so whoever has travelled follows up with us during their normal day.
- Tracking: a container has a number you enter on the shipping line’s site to see where it is. An air shipment has a waybill number followed up with the airline. The track your shipment page explains the steps.
- Our messages: when the container leaves your home, enters the port, sails, passes Suez, reaches the transhipment port, berths in Sweden, and is released.
- Documentation: a photo of each piece before it is packed, and a photo of the container after loading and at sealing.
- Insurance: an optional item covering loss and damage on the value written in the list. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.
- On receipt: open the fragile cartons in front of the crew, and write any remark on the delivery note before you sign.
Shipping from Sweden to Jeddah
The route works in both directions. A scholarship holder who has finished studying in Lund returns with books and the belongings of those years. A Swede coming to work in Jeddah brings furniture. A trader imports furniture, equipment and homeware. Our agent collects from the Swedish address and gathers the client’s purchases from several shops into one shipment.
- By air: to King Abdulaziz Airport, cleared there and delivered in your district.
- By sea: from Gothenburg or Helsingborg to Jeddah Islamic Port, then to your home in the city.
- On arrival in Jeddah: what the returnee used in Sweden is cleared as personal effects against a list. Anything bought new pays a duty that follows its type, with 15% value added tax on top.
- A car: subject to the Saudi import conditions on age and specifications, so ask before you buy it.
- Commercial goods: a Swedish product subject to a Saudi technical regulation does not ship until its conformity certificate has been issued through the Saber platform.
Other destinations from Jeddah: the Gulf and the rest of the world
Sweden is one of many destinations we serve from Jeddah, and the transport method changes with the destination. Jeddah shipments reach the Gulf states by closed trucks overland, and by air for the urgent, because a vessel leaving the Red Sea circles the whole Arabian Peninsula to reach the Gulf ports. Europe, America and North Africa, by contrast, are reached by sea and air.
- The Gulf states: road trucks door to door, with details in the article shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Gulf states.
- The Nordic countries: nearly the same route as far as the North Sea, and Norway has its own article: shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Norway.
- The rest of Europe: the ports of Hamburg, Rotterdam and Antwerp are days closer, explained in the article shipping from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
- For anyone shipping from another city to Sweden: the full guide shipping from Saudi Arabia to Sweden.
Tips before shipping to Sweden
- Hand over the sea shipment six weeks before you travel, so you do not sleep on the floor of an empty flat.
- Ask the Swedish landlord for a list of what the flat contains; many have a kitchen, a washing machine and wardrobes.
- Avoid having your container arrive in July if you can, as it is the holiday month there.
- Write the true used value of each line, not its purchase price and not a token figure.
- Take out of the kitchen cartons anything containing meat, milk, ghee or cheese.
- Put plug adapters in your hand luggage, as Swedish sockets are round with two pins.
- Keep a paper copy of the contents list and the relief declaration in your travel bag.
How do you choose a shipping company from Jeddah to Sweden?
Few shipping offices in Jeddah really know Sweden, and many treat it like any nearby European port. The difference shows in simple questions you put before paying a deposit. Compare the answers with this table:
| What you ask about | A reassuring answer | A worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| Legal standing | A commercial registration, a contract and a stamped receipt | A transfer to a personal account with no paper |
| The Swedish port | Names Gothenburg or Helsingborg and mentions the transhipment port | “We get it to Europe and it carries on from there” |
| Time | Counts transhipment and inland haulage, and says five weeks | “Two weeks to the door” |
| Tax | Asks about your status and explains the relief declaration | “Used goods carry no customs in any country” |
| Packing | Mentions condensation, desiccant bags and treated timber | Wraps everything in tight plastic |
| After the port | A known agent, with unloading and reassembly in the price | “The consignee sorts it out” |
Common mistakes when shipping from Jeddah to Sweden
- Shipping the container ten days before travel on the assumption that Europe is close.
- Sending furniture without the relief declaration, so its owner pays a quarter of its value in tax.
- Shipping air conditioners and dryers that do not accept 50 hertz.
- Writing the address without the building’s door code or the flat number.
- Putting new furniture in its carton among exempt used effects.
- Shipping a car before working out the 10% duty, the 25% tax and the cost of modifications.
- Comparing a price that ends at the Gothenburg quay with one that reaches a room in Malmö.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Jeddah to Sweden
What is the best shipping company from Jeddah to Sweden by air and sea?
The best one asks you three things before quoting: your status in Sweden, your city there, and the volume you are shipping. Those three decide whether you are exempt from tax, which port the container heads for, and whether sea or air is cheaper for you. Home Safe is an establishment registered in Jeddah under number 4030601060; it collects from your home, clears in Sweden and delivers to the address.
How much do air and sea freight from Jeddah to Sweden cost?
By air from King Abdulaziz Airport a kilogram starts from SAR 23, express documents from SAR 83, and a parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110. By sea from Jeddah port, part-load furniture starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house furniture container from SAR 11,000, and a saloon car from SAR 2,800. The final figure reaches you once you send photos of the shipment and the name of the Swedish city to 0552803439.
What is the cheapest way to ship from Jeddah to Sweden?
A sea part load is the cheapest for anything measured in cubic metres that does not fill a container, such as a student’s cartons or one room of furniture. A full container is cheaper per metre once the volume passes roughly half a container. Air is only cheaper for the few kilograms that are not worth a five-week wait.
How do prices differ by shipment type and transport method?
Each type has its own unit. A parcel or suitcase is priced per kilogram of chargeable weight, cartons and furniture per cubic metre, a whole house per container, and a car by its class and size. Inland haulage is then added, and it grows the further the address is from the port of Gothenburg.
How long does a shipment take from Jeddah until it reaches Sweden?
A full container takes 30 to 40 days from your door in Jeddah to the consignee’s door, of which 20 to 26 days are at sea. A part load takes 35 to 42 days because it waits for the shared container to fill and is then sorted on arrival. Air takes 3 to 6 days.
Which Swedish port does a container from Jeddah arrive at?
Gothenburg in most bookings, as it is the largest container port in Sweden and lies on its west coast. When the address is in the south, such as Malmö, Lund or Helsingborg itself, we book to the port of Helsingborg if a suitable feeder vessel serves it, because it is the country’s second container port and closer to those cities.
Does the ship sail directly from Jeddah to Sweden?
Usually not. The container leaves Jeddah on a large vessel to one of the North European ports such as Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremerhaven, then moves to a smaller vessel that completes the trip to Gothenburg or Helsingborg. We write the name of the transhipment port and the dates of both vessels in the booking confirmation.
Do I pay tax on my used furniture when it enters Sweden?
You do not if you are moving your residence there and meet the relief conditions in current practice: normal residence outside the European Union for at least one continuous year, goods that are owned and used, entry within a year of your move, and a relief declaration lodged with Swedish Customs. Without it, 25% value added tax and a duty by item are charged. We go over the rules in force with you before loading.
What does a scholarship student need to bring cartons in free of charges?
In current practice the student must be enrolled full-time at a university or institute, and the items must be their own and for personal use during their studies. So we ask for the admission letter or enrolment certificate, a copy of the passport and the residence permit for studies, and a list of what is in each carton. We write the accommodation address with its postcode and room number.
Do you ship a car from Jeddah to Sweden, and what is its tax?
Yes, inside a container from Jeddah port, and the price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon. In Sweden a 10% customs duty is charged on it, then 25% value added tax on the value plus the freight and the duty, unless it enters as part of the effects of someone moving residence under the conditions. After clearance it goes through verification of origin at the Swedish Transport Agency and then a registration inspection.
Will my electrical appliances work in Sweden?
The voltage in Sweden is 230 volts, close to what Jeddah homes have today, but the frequency there is 50 hertz and the socket is round with two pins. Electronics and chargers therefore work with just a plug adapter. For anything with a motor or compressor, such as a washing machine or fridge, check the label: if it reads 50/60 hertz, ship it; if not, selling it in Jeddah saves you more.
What should I keep out of cartons bound for Sweden?
Meat, dairy, ghee, cheese and anything of animal origin, as they are banned in personal consignments arriving from outside the European Union. Alongside them: medicines without a prescription, knives and daggers, counterfeits, and alcohol and tobacco. Dates, coffee, cardamom and dry spices, however, are accepted in personal quantities in sealed packs.
Do you deliver to Stockholm, Uppsala and the northern cities?
Yes. Stockholm is about 470 km from Gothenburg and Uppsala about 450 km, and the truck reaches them within a day of release. We also deliver to Linköping, Örebro and Västerås, and to Umeå, Luleå and Kiruna in the north; these add two to four days, and more in winter when snow slows the roads.
Are insurance and tracking part of the service?
Tracking is: you receive the container number or air waybill number, and a message from us at every stage. Insurance is an optional item calculated as a percentage of the value you write against each line of the list. We advise taking it for household furniture and a car.
Do you ship from Sweden to Jeddah?
Yes. Our agent collects from the house, the student accommodation or the shop in Sweden, and the goods travel by air to King Abdulaziz Airport or by sea to Jeddah Islamic Port. A returning student’s used baggage is cleared in the Kingdom as personal effects with a contents list, and new items carry a duty by type and 15% value added tax.
