Who ships from Riyadh to Sweden, and what do they ship?
Riyadh’s shipments to Sweden are few in number compared with the UK or Germany, but their owners are easy to identify. The capital has Swedish engineers, doctors and specialists working on fixed-term contracts, most of whom live in residential compounds, and when the contract ends they go home with a whole household. It also has scholarship students bound for the universities of Stockholm and Uppsala, and Arab families who have obtained residence there and are moving what they gathered during their working years in the Kingdom. Each of these has a different volume and a method that suits it:
| Who ships | What they usually ship | The closest method |
|---|---|---|
| A Swede whose contract in Riyadh has ended | The furniture of a compound villa, and sometimes a car | A 40ft container with the declaration for a person returning home |
| A family moving to take up residence | Bedrooms, a majlis, carpets and kitchenware | A 20ft container or a part load with transfer-of-residence relief |
| A scholarship or postgraduate student | Clothes, books, a computer and room items | Cartons in a shared container, and an urgent carton by air |
| A company or factory | Dates, perfumes and Saudi products, or parts and equipment | A container or by the cubic metre, and samples by air |
| An embassy or government body | Official documents and the baggage of transferred staff | Express shipping for documents, and sea for baggage |
| Someone sending to a relative or friend | A gift, a parcel of clothes or papers | Express door-to-door shipping |
The shipping route from Riyadh to Sweden and its duration
The sea journey has three legs: a road leg inside the Kingdom to the port, a long sailing that rounds the whole of western Europe, then a second road leg inside Sweden. Sweden is the farthest European port country from Jeddah, as the ship does not stop at the Mediterranean but leaves through Gibraltar and climbs north to the entrance of the Baltic Sea. This is what makes its duration a week or two longer than a shipment bound for Italy or France. The table below spreads the days over the stages for a full container:
| Stage | What happens in it | Usual duration |
|---|---|---|
| Survey, packing and loading | Inventory and packing at your home in Riyadh and loading the container | One to two days |
| From Riyadh to the port | A truck to Jeddah, or a train from the dry port to Dammam | One to two days |
| Export clearance and waiting for the vessel | The export declaration and handing the container to the terminal | 3–5 days |
| Sailing to Gothenburg | Suez and the Mediterranean, then the Atlantic and the North Sea, usually with transhipment | 20–26 days |
| Clearance in Sweden | The import declaration and the relief declaration, if any | 2–4 days |
| Inland transport and delivery | A truck or container train to your city, then unloading and assembly | One to 3 days |
The duration differs with the method. This is a quick comparison of what we offer on this line, from the door of the home in Riyadh to the consignee’s door in Sweden:
| Method | Duration to the door | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Full container | 32–42 days | A whole household, and goods that fill a container |
| Shared container | 37–44 days | Anything under 15 cubic metres and student baggage |
| Car by sea | 32–42 days | Cars, alone or with furniture |
| Air freight | 3–6 days | Parcels, suitcases and samples |
What lengthens the duration?
- Transhipment: if the container misses the feeder vessel in Hamburg or Rotterdam, it waits days for the next one.
- Waiting for consolidation: a shared container does not move from Jeddah before it is full.
- An incomplete relief declaration: an entry without proof of previous residence halts the release until it is complete.
- The Swedish winter: snow slows trucks north of Stockholm and may postpone unloading by a day.
- The summer holiday: work in Sweden quietens a great deal in July, and appointments grow further apart.
Durations for all destinations are on the transit times page.
Sea freight from Riyadh to Sweden via Gothenburg
Gothenburg on Sweden’s west coast is the country’s sea gate, and more than half of Swedish container trade passes through it. That is why Riyadh’s shipments head for it whatever the consignee’s city, even if his home is in Stockholm on the opposite coast. The east-coast ports are small and their services from the Red Sea are few, and road transport from Gothenburg is faster than waiting for a ship that enters the Baltic Sea.

Riyadh has no sea, so the first question is how the container reaches the ship. The usual way is a truck that carries the sealed container from your home to Jeddah Islamic Port at a distance of close to 950 km, Jeddah being the Kingdom’s nearest port to the Suez Canal. The second way is the container train from the dry port in Riyadh to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, which we use when its vessel date is nearer, even though sailing from the Arabian Gulf adds days for rounding the peninsula.
Then comes the second question: which container? A container 20 feet long is enough for a flat of two to three rooms, and a 40ft container carries the furniture of a villa or furniture with a car. Anything less than that travels in a shared container in which you pay for your cubic metres only:
| Point of comparison | Shared container | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 m³ | 15–28 m³ | 30–60 m³ |
| An example from Riyadh | A scholarship student’s baggage, or a bedroom and cartons | A flat in Olaya or Malaz | A villa in a residential compound or in Hittin |
| Method of calculation | By the cubic metre | A price for the container | A price for the container |
| Duration | Longer by about a week | The shortest by sea | The shortest by sea |
The dimensions and payload of each container are on the container sizes page, and the whole method is explained on the sea freight page. We do not offer land freight to Sweden, as the road crosses many countries and there is no regular service on it for baggage.
The shipping price from Riyadh to Sweden and how is it calculated?
The price is not calculated by distance but by the space your shipment occupies. At sea you pay for the cubic metre or for the whole container. In the air you pay for the chargeable weight, which is the greater of two weights: the actual weight on the scale, and the volumetric weight resulting from the carton’s dimensions. These are the prices our services start from on the Sweden line:
| Service | Price starts from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Air freight per kilogram | SAR 23 | From King Khalid Airport, falling as the weight rises |
| Express documents up to one kilogram | SAR 83 | Door to door |
| Express parcel up to 5 kg | SAR 110 | Door to door |
| Part-load furniture and baggage by sea | SAR 5,500 | To Gothenburg in a shared container |
| Full-house furniture container | SAR 11,000 | From Jeddah port to Gothenburg |
| Saloon car by sea | SAR 2,800 | From Jeddah port |
| Moving the container from Riyadh to the port | Set on request | According to the container size and the port chosen |
| Transport inside Sweden after Gothenburg | Set on request | According to the city and the floor |
Prices circulating in the market: in our research we did not find an office that publishes a tariff for the Riyadh – Sweden line specifically, and most pages settle for general phrases about discounts. The figures that used to circulate on this line put the air kilogram between SAR 28 and 40, the sea cubic metre between SAR 850 and 1,100, and clearance fees in Sweden between SAR 350 and 700 depending on the contents. Use them for comparison, and always ask what the figure includes: does it end at the port or at the door of your home?
| What changes the price | How it affects it |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The first factor. Work out your volume with the CBM calculator |
| The consignee’s city | Gothenburg is the lowest because it is the port city; Stockholm, Uppsala and Västerås add the haulage of 380–470 km, and the northern cities more |
| Nature of the contents | Electronics, antiques and glass need special crates and insurance |
| Accompanying services | Dismantling and assembly, storage and insurance are optional items written separately |
| Season | Summer is the season of people moving out of Riyadh, and early booking protects the price |
How do you lower the cost?
- Do not ship the fridge, washing machine and cooker, as most rented Swedish flats are fitted with them.
- Dismantle beds, wardrobes and tables, as a dismantled piece takes up half its space.
- Sell the air conditioners and water heaters in Riyadh, as there is no place for them in a Swedish home.
- Choose the shared container if your volume is under 15 cubic metres.
- Keep the sea for everything that can wait, and send by air only what you need in your first week.
The remaining factors are on the pricing factors page.
Shipping household furniture from Riyadh to Sweden
Riyadh furniture leaves very dry air and spends more than three weeks in a metal container crossing cold, damp seas. The temperature difference between Jeddah and the North Sea condenses water vapour on the inside of the container roof, which then drips onto whatever is beneath. That is why we build the packing on this line around moisture first, then impact. The work goes through five stages: dismantling and numbering the large pieces, wrapping each piece in what suits its material, loading the heavy items at the bottom, documenting everything with photographs, then reassembly in the Swedish home.

| The piece | How we pack it for the Sweden journey |
|---|---|
| Bedrooms and wardrobes | Dismantled with their panels numbered, wrapped in padded blankets with corners protected by reinforced cardboard |
| Sofas and majlis seating | A breathable fabric cover then a padded blanket, not airtight plastic that traps vapour on the fabric |
| Mattresses | Thick mattress bags, sealed after making sure they are completely dry |
| Screens and electronics | The original carton or a wooden crate, with a moisture-barrier bag and desiccant sachets inside |
| Carpets | Cleaned and dried, then rolled in paper and a barrier wrap |
| Glass, marble and mirrors | A heat-treated wooden crate with the ISPM 15 stamp |
Along with the packing we write a numbered contents list in English: every carton has a number on its sides, and every number has a line in the list describing what is in it and its used value. This list is the paper the customs officer in Gothenburg reads, and it is how you know in your new home which carton goes to which room. We hang desiccant bags inside the container and leave a gap between the furniture and its walls. All the packing methods are in the packing guide, and the service details are on the furniture shipping page.
Before you decide what to ship, remember that a Swedish home is not a Riyadh home. Flats are smaller, their wardrobes are built into the walls, and the lifts of old buildings are too narrow for a six-door wardrobe. So measure the door, the stairs and the lift or ask the landlord for the measurements, and leave the large Arabic majlis behind if there is no room to take it.
Transfer-of-residence relief in Sweden
Anyone who moves his normal residence to Sweden brings in his used furniture and baggage with no customs duty and no value added tax. Sweden applies European Union rules in this, and asks for a special relief declaration to be submitted with the customs entry. The conditions in force, which we confirm before shipping, are:
- Previous residence: at least one continuous year outside the European Union, proven by your Saudi residence permit and your employment contract.
- Intention to reside: that you intend to live in Sweden for at least a year.
- Ownership and use: that the items have been in your possession and in use for six months before the move.
- Date of entry: within twelve months of your move, and earlier is allowed against an undertaking.
- No disposal: they are not sold, lent or hired out within a year of their entry.
- What it does not cover: tobacco and alcoholic drinks, commercial vehicles, and non-portable tools of a trade.
A Swede returning home has a declaration of his own with similar conditions. Clearance is made much easier if you have been entered in the population register and obtained your personal number before the container arrives. If it has not yet been issued, we store the shipment in Riyadh until it is. What you bought new weeks before travelling and is still in its carton does not fall under the relief, and 25% tax is paid on it.
Shipping electrical and electronic appliances
Appliances need two decisions before packing: will they work there at all, and can they stand the journey? The voltage in the Kingdom and Sweden is almost the same, but the frequency is different and the socket is different. Appliances with a motor or compressor are affected by the frequency difference, unlike electronics that run on an internal power supply. So check the label on the back of each appliance before you count a place for it in the container:
| Item | In the Kingdom | In Sweden | What do you do? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Voltage | 230 V | 230 V | No voltage converter needed for modern appliances |
| Frequency | 60 Hz | 50 Hz | Ship only what is marked 50/60 Hz |
| Socket | Three rectangular pins | Two round pins with side earthing | A plug adapter or a change of plug |
| Screens, computers and chargers | Work on both frequencies | Shipped, and a plug adapter is enough | |
| Fridge, washing machine and air conditioner | Mostly made for one frequency | Better sold in Riyadh | |
Whatever you decide to ship we fix inside its carton with dense foam that stops it moving, we put large screens in wooden crates, and we gather cables and accessories in bags bearing the number of the appliance itself. Loose batteries and power banks are shipped by air only under conditions, so they go with the furniture by sea.
Shipping the baggage of students from Riyadh
A student travelling from Riyadh to Stockholm University, Uppsala or the Royal Institute of Technology does not need a container but six to ten cartons. Excess baggage on the plane is the dearest way to move them. The answer is for the cartons to travel in a shared container weeks before the student, while his suitcase keeps enough for the first days.
- Timing: hand the cartons over about seven weeks before travel so they arrive with the start of term.
- Winter clothes: a Riyadh coat is not enough for an Uppsala winter. Buy the heavy items there and save their volume.
- Urgent items: a carton or two by air for the computer, the books and what cannot be done without.
- Address: the name of the student housing, the corridor and room number, the building door code and a Swedish mobile number.
- Customs: the rule in force is that a full-time student’s items are exempt on proving admission, and we confirm what is in force before shipping.
Shipping parcels, gifts and documents
A small parcel does not wait for a container and does not pass through a port. We collect it from your home or office in Riyadh, pack it in a carton that fits its size with padding that stops it moving, and it leaves on the first flight from King Khalid Airport, then is delivered in Sweden at the consignee’s door or at a pick-up point near him if he is not at home. These are the kinds of thing sent with this service:
| What you send | Price starts from | Duration | What we watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Documents, certificates and contracts | SAR 83 | 3–5 days | A sealed reinforced envelope and a signature on receipt |
| A gift or clothes parcel up to 5 kg | SAR 110 | 3–6 days | A description of the contents, their value and the word “gift” |
| Dates, coffee and spices | SAR 23 per kilogram | 3–6 days | Sealed packs with an ingredients label, and no animal products |
| A suitcase or carton of baggage | SAR 23 per kilogram | 3–6 days | The volumetric weight, from the volumetric weight calculator |
Swedish Customs charges value added tax on parcels coming from outside the European Union, and the rule in force is that a small gift between two individuals is excepted from it. So do not write a token value, because a parcel whose value is doubted is held until the consignee presents an invoice. The service details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods for companies and factories
Sweden is a market small in population and high in purchasing power, with large Arab communities that ask for dates, coffee, spices, perfumes and abayas. Goods cleared in Gothenburg enter the whole European market, so they move on afterwards to Denmark or Germany with no second customs.
- Importer number: the Swedish consignee needs an EU customs identification number before the shipment arrives.
- Duties: according to the European tariff heading for each product, then 25% value added tax on most goods, and a lower rate on food.
- Conformity: appliances, toys and cosmetics have European requirements that are reviewed before shipping, not after.
- Food: a label in a language the market accepts, a clear expiry date, and no animal products except under special health conditions.
- Documents: a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading, which we prepare to match what is in the container.
- Schedule: regular booking on set vessels helps the importer control his stock and cut what he pays for storage there.
Machines and heavy equipment are fixed in the container on treated wooden bases, and whatever exceeds its dimensions is shipped on a flat-rack container. Details are on the commercial shipping and heavy equipment shipping pages.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Sweden
The car leaves Riyadh on a car transporter to Jeddah port, and is not driven that distance, to protect its odometer and condition. At the port it enters a closed container and its wheels are fixed with straps and wooden chocks, or it boards a roll-on roll-off vessel if there is a suitable sailing. The container suits a luxury car and anyone shipping furniture with it, and roll-on roll-off costs less for an ordinary car. Before handover we ask for it to be cleaned, emptied of belongings and left with a quarter of a tank of fuel, and we photograph its condition inside and out.
But the freight is the smallest item in the sum. Swedish tax is what decides whether shipping is worthwhile. A car that does not fall within the relief for a person moving residence is charged customs duty of 10% then value added tax of 25%. This is an example for a car worth SAR 80,000:
| Item | Method of calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Value with freight | 80,000 + 2,800 | SAR 82,800 |
| Customs duty 10% | 82,800 × 10% | SAR 8,280 |
| Value added tax 25% | (82,800 + 8,280) × 25% | SAR 22,770 |
| Total paid to customs | 8,280 + 22,770 | SAR 31,050 |
After customs come the registration steps: an application for verification of origin to the Swedish Transport Agency with the original registration document, the purchase invoice and proof of clearance, then Swedish insurance, then the registration inspection. Gulf-specification cars may be asked to have their lamps modified or their emission level proven. And prepare the car for the cold: coolant and a battery that can stand sub-zero temperatures, and winter tyres, which are required from the first of December to the end of March in winter conditions. The general conditions are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the two methods are on the container car shipping and RoRo shipping pages.
Swedish customs and the documents required
For every shipment that enters Sweden from outside the European Union an import declaration is submitted, even if it is exempt personal baggage. Our agent in Gothenburg or at Arlanda Airport submits the declaration in your name, but he can only do so with complete papers that reach him before the ship.
| Type of shipment | What we need from you | What we prepare |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and baggage of a person moving residence | Passport, the Swedish residence permit or personal number, the Saudi residence permit, and the employment contract or proof of the period of residence | The numbered contents list, the relief declaration and the bill of lading |
| Student baggage | Passport, the admission or enrolment letter, and the housing address | The contents list and the declaration |
| Car | The car’s original registration card, the invoice showing the purchase, and the export certificate issued once the plates are handed in | The bill of lading and the export declaration |
| Commercial goods | The commercial registration, the invoice, and the importer’s EU customs number | The packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading |
| Parcel or gift | A description of the contents and their value, and the consignee’s name, address and mobile | The air waybill and the pro forma invoice |
You will find every paper explained on the shipping documents page, while the customs clearance page covers what takes place at the two ends.
What is not shipped to Sweden or needs a permit
What most often stops Riyadh shipments at Swedish customs is not a dangerous prohibited item but ordinary household things whose owner does not realise they are restricted there: a tin of ghee, a medicine without a prescription, or a dagger hung on the wall. Go through this list before the cartons are closed:
| Item | The rule in force |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy, ghee and their products | Not admitted in baggage coming from outside the European Union |
| Medicines | A personal quantity with a prescription in your name; some sedatives and painkillers are classed as narcotics |
| Tobacco, shisha molasses and alcoholic drinks | Outside the relief, and their tax is high |
| Weapons, daggers, ornamental swords and air rifles | Need a licence, and it is safer not to ship them |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Counterfeit goods | Confiscated even if it is a single piece |
| Perfumes, aerosols and batteries | Restricted by air, so they are shipped by sea |
The general list for all destinations is on the prohibited items page.
Delivery in Stockholm, Uppsala and Västerås
Most addresses of Riyadh shipments lie in the Lake Mälaren basin in eastern Sweden: the capital Stockholm, the university city of Uppsala to its north, and industrial Västerås to its west. The three are close together, none being more than an hour and a half by car from another. So we treat them as one distribution area: the container is cleared in Gothenburg first, then crosses the country eastwards by truck or container train to a terminal near Stockholm, and from there by distribution van to the door of the home.

| City | Distance from Gothenburg | What marks delivery there |
|---|---|---|
| Stockholm and its suburbs | About 470 km | The central streets are narrow and need a small distribution van and a parking permit |
| Uppsala | About 450 km | Many student residences, where delivery is by appointment with the housing office |
| Västerås | About 380 km | Houses and industrial areas that a truck reaches easily |
| Örebro, Linköping and Norrköping | 280–310 km | On the road between Gothenburg and the capital |
| Gothenburg and Borås | Up to 65 km | The fastest delivery because it is the port city |
| Malmö and Lund | About 270 km | In the south near the bridge to Denmark |
| Umeå and the northern cities | About 1,000 km | Delivery by prior appointment, and later in winter |
An air shipment has a shorter way to these cities. Arlanda Airport lies between Stockholm and Uppsala, so it is cleared there and reaches any of the three cities on the same day or the next. For delivery without delay, write the address as Swedes write it: the street name then the building number, the postcode before the city name, the building door code, and the four-digit flat number. Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift, as the size of the unloading crew is set on that. The country’s other destinations are on the shipping to Sweden page.
Services for individuals, companies and embassies
An individual wants someone to take the whole worry off him, a company wants a fixed date and correct papers, and an official body wants confidentiality and documentation. We arrange the work for each group as suits it:
- Individuals and families: a survey at home, packing and dismantling, storage if needed, and assembly in Sweden, with a review of the relief file.
- Companies and shops: regular container booking, shipping by the cubic metre for small quantities, and air samples before the large order.
- Embassies, consulates and attaché offices: the baggage of transferred staff and sealed documents, with a signed collection and delivery receipt. The Diplomatic Quarter in Riyadh is one of our usual collection sites.
Air freight from Riyadh to Sweden
Air freight cuts five weeks to less than one. There is no regular direct flight between Riyadh and Stockholm, so the shipment leaves the cargo village at King Khalid Airport and stops once at an intermediate airport such as Istanbul, Dubai, Doha or Frankfurt, then lands at Arlanda.

| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| What it suits | Parcels, suitcases, urgent baggage, documents, commercial samples and rush spare parts |
| What it does not suit | Large furniture, whose freight by air is many times its freight by sea |
| Duration | 3–6 days to the address, including one to two days for clearance at Arlanda |
| Price | Starts from SAR 23 per kilogram, falling as the weight rises |
| Delivery | To the consignee’s address after clearance, or collection from the airport for those who wish |
Anyone moving with a whole household combines the two routes: a container for the furniture that leaves a month before he travels, and a hundred kilograms by air holding winter clothes, the children’s things and basic kitchenware that arrive almost with him. Details of the method are on the air freight page.
Air or sea to Sweden?
Two things settle the decision: the volume of what you ship, and when you need it. The rule we work by is that anything under a hundred kilograms goes by air, and anything over a cubic metre and a half that can wait goes by sea. Between the two limits we cost both methods for you and you choose:
| Point of comparison | Air freight | Sea freight |
|---|---|---|
| Duration to the door | 3–6 days | 32–44 days |
| Unit of calculation | The kilogram | The cubic metre or the container |
| Exit point from Riyadh | King Khalid Airport directly | A truck or train to the port first |
| Entry point to Sweden | Arlanda Airport | The port of Gothenburg |
| Furniture and cars | Impractical | It is the natural route |
A wider comparison of the methods is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns
We come to your home wherever it is in Riyadh, and do not ask you to bring anything to a warehouse. The city is vast, so we set the survey and loading date according to the district and the hours when large trucks are allowed in. Residential compounds ask for an entry permit for the crew and the truck, so we send their details to the compound management two days before the date.
| Area | Districts and sites we collect from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| North Riyadh | Malqa, Yasmin, Narjis, Hittin, Sahafa, Aqiq | Spacious villas, and the container is loaded in front of the home |
| Central Riyadh | Olaya, Sulaymaniyah, Malaz, Murabba | Flats and towers, and we coordinate use of the service lift |
| East Riyadh | Qurtubah, Yarmouk, Rawdah, Naseem, and the Airport Road compounds | A prior entry permit for compounds |
| West Riyadh | The Diplomatic Quarter, Irqah, Dhahrat Laban, Suwaidi | The Diplomatic Quarter is entered with details sent in advance |
| South Riyadh | Shifa, Aziziyah, Dar Al Baida, and the Second Industrial City | Factory goods loaded by forklift |
| Around Riyadh | Diriyah, Al-Kharj, Muzahimiyah, Huraymila, Majmaah, Shaqra | Collection by appointment, with its charge set on request |
Anyone living in another city will find it on the cities we serve page, and our services in the capital are in the article international shipping company in Riyadh. The complete home-to-home service is explained on the door-to-door shipping page.
Temporary storage before shipping
Many of those leaving Riyadh hand the home back to the landlord before their Swedish address is known, because the rental market in Stockholm is hard and getting a contract takes long. In that case we do not ship into the unknown. We pack, inventory and keep the shipment in a closed warehouse, and load it when you send us the address. Details are on the storage page.
Steps for shipping from Riyadh to Sweden
- You send to 0552803439 photos or a list of what you are shipping, the name of your Swedish city and your travel date.
- We ask about your status there: moving residence, a student, or a sender of goods, so that we know your customs position.
- The surveyor visits you in Riyadh if the shipment is furniture, and you receive the price itemised.
- We book the container’s place on the vessel or the shipment’s place on the plane before loading day.
- The crew comes to dismantle, pack and number, and the contents list is written during the work.
- The container moves to the port or the shipment to King Khalid Airport, and we complete export clearance.
- Our agent receives the shipment in Gothenburg or Arlanda and submits the declaration and the relief declaration.
- It is delivered to your address, unloaded and assembled, and you sign the delivery report after checking.
Tracking the shipment and insuring it
The journey to Sweden usually involves two ships and three handlings in ports, so follow-up here is not a luxury. You receive the container number and the bill of lading number on loading day, and we notify you at four points: departure from Jeddah, transhipment in the European port, arrival in Gothenburg, and customs release. The tracking method is on the track your shipment page.
The sea carrier’s liability for damage is limited by international conventions and does not cover the value of a whole household. So we offer optional insurance calculated as a percentage of the value you declare in the contents list, covering the journey from the Riyadh door to the Sweden door. On delivery, open the valuable cartons in front of the crew and write your remark in the report before signing. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.
Shipping from Sweden to Riyadh
The line works in both directions. The scholarship student returns with his cartons, the Saudi family returns after years of work or treatment, and Riyadh companies import parts and equipment from Swedish factories. Our agent collects from the Swedish address, and the container sails from Gothenburg to Jeddah port and is then moved by road to Riyadh, or the shipment flies from Arlanda to King Khalid Airport.
- A returnee’s belongings: whatever has been used enters the Kingdom as personal effects with a contents list, while anything new is charged the duty for its type plus 15% VAT.
- Commercial goods: whatever the technical regulations cover is registered on the SABER platform and obtains a conformity certificate before shipping.
- The car: the rule in force is that it is no more than five years old and matches Gulf specifications, so ask before you buy.
For anyone shipping from another city or to a neighbouring country there is the article shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
Tips before shipping to Sweden
- Ask the Swedish landlord for a list of the appliances in the flat before you decide what to ship.
- Hand the container over at least five weeks before you travel, as the route is longer than people think.
- Carry in your suitcase clothes enough for two weeks of cold, and do not leave them all in the container.
- Dry carpets and mattresses completely before packing day, as trapped moisture turns to mould on the way.
- Write the real used value of each item, not the purchase price and not a token figure.
- Surrender the car’s plates and obtain the export certificate days before the transporter’s date.
- Keep a copy of the contents list and your Saudi employment contract in your hand luggage.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Sweden?
Not many offices work on the Sweden line, and some of those who offer it sell your shipment to another broker and do not know where the ship docks. The following questions reveal in minutes who knows the route and who is reading from a sheet:
| Ask about | The answer of one who knows | An answer that calls for caution |
|---|---|---|
| Legal status | A commercial registration, a written contract and a collection receipt | A mobile number and a transfer to a personal account |
| Port of arrival | Gothenburg, and he names the transhipment port | “To Stockholm directly by sea” |
| Duration | Five to six weeks to the door | “Fifteen days by ship” |
| Customs | He asks about your residence and personal number before loading | “Personal items carry no customs” |
| Packing | He mentions moisture, desiccant bags and blankets | Nylon over everything |
| After the port | A price that includes transport to your city and unloading | A price that ends at the Gothenburg quay, unsaid |

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to Sweden
How much does shipping from Riyadh to Sweden cost?
By plane from King Khalid Airport a kilogram starts from SAR 23, an express document envelope from SAR 83 and a parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110. By ship, part-load furniture starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house furniture container from SAR 11,000 and a saloon car from SAR 2,800, counted from Jeddah port. Moving the container from Riyadh to the port is set on request according to its size.
How many days does a shipment need from Riyadh until it reaches Sweden?
Air freight reaches the consignee’s address in 3 to 6 days. A full container needs 32 to 42 days from your home in Riyadh to your home in Sweden, of which 20 to 26 days are sailing from Jeddah. A shared container takes 37 to 44 days, because it waits for its load to be completed and is then sorted in a warehouse in Gothenburg.
Which port does my container leave from, since Riyadh is far from the sea?
From Jeddah Islamic Port for most Sweden shipments, and the container reaches it on a truck that covers close to 950 km. The second option is the container train from Riyadh Dry Port to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, which we turn to when its vessel schedule suits your date better, even though its ship sails round the Arabian Peninsula before it reaches the Suez Canal.
Does the ship reach Gothenburg without a stop?
Mostly not. A container coming from Jeddah is moved in a large European port such as Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremerhaven onto a smaller ship that completes the trip to Gothenburg. Some lines reach it with a direct service depending on the season. In the booking we tell you the name of the transhipment port and the expected date after it.
I live in Uppsala, so where is my shipment cleared and how does it reach me?
A sea shipment is cleared in Gothenburg and then covers about 450 km by truck or container train to the Stockholm area, and from there goes by a distribution van to Uppsala. An air shipment is cleared at Arlanda Airport, which lies between Stockholm and Uppsala at a distance of roughly 35 km from Uppsala, so it reaches you on the day of release or the day after.
Is my used furniture exempt from Swedish customs?
It is exempt if you are moving your main residence there. The rule in force is that you have lived outside the European Union for at least a year, that the items are yours and you have used them for six months, that you intend to live in Sweden for a year or more, and that you do not sell or lend them within a year of their entry. The relief declaration is submitted to Swedish Customs with the entry, and we review what is in force with you before loading.
I am a scholarship student going to Stockholm, so what do I ship and how?
Ship clothes, books, study supplies and room items in cartons inside a shared container, and leave a carton or two for the plane for what you need in your first week. The rule in force is that a full-time student brings these items in under a relief for students on proving admission. Hand the cartons over about seven weeks before you travel.
Do you ship my car from Riyadh to Sweden?
Yes. A car transporter carries it from Riyadh to Jeddah port, then it sails inside a container or on a roll-on roll-off vessel depending on what is available. The freight starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port, and moving it from Riyadh is set on request. Before the freight, count customs duty of 10% and value added tax of 25% if the car is not within the relief for a person moving residence.
What does a Saudi car need before it can drive on Swedish roads?
After customs clearance you apply to the Swedish Transport Agency for verification of origin, then the car goes through a registration inspection at an approved inspection body, and it needs Swedish insurance. Gulf-specification cars may be asked to have their lighting modified or their emissions proven. Winter tyres are mandatory from the first of December to the end of March whenever the roads are in winter condition.
Will the fridge, washing machine and television work there?
The voltage in both countries is 230 V, but the frequency in Sweden is 50 Hz and in the Kingdom 60 Hz, and the Swedish socket is round with two pins. Screens, computers and chargers work with a plug adapter only. As for anything with a motor or compressor, read its label; if 50/60 Hz is not written on it, it is better to sell it in Riyadh. Many rented flats there come with their own fridge and cooker.
Which items delay a shipment at Swedish customs?
Meat and dairy and their products in baggage, medicines without a prescription in your name, knives, daggers and ornamental swords, tobacco beyond personal use, and counterfeit goods. One such item in an undeclared carton is enough to have the whole shipment opened, so tell us about it at the time of the inventory.
Do you ship commercial goods and factory equipment to Västerås?
Yes. Västerås is an industrial city, and the container reaches it from Gothenburg on a truck that covers about 380 km. The Swedish importer needs an EU customs identification number before the shipment arrives, and appliances need the European conformity mark. A machine that does not fit a standard container is shipped on a flat-rack container, and its price is set on request.
How do I send a gift or a small parcel to a relative in Sweden?
By express door-to-door shipping; a parcel of up to 5 kg starts from SAR 110 and arrives in 3 to 6 days. Write the contents and their real value and the word “gift” if it is one, and the consignee’s Swedish mobile number. The rule in force is that a gift between two individuals is exempt if its value is small, and above the limit 25% tax and a handling fee are paid.
Can my belongings be stored in Riyadh until my home in Sweden is ready?
Yes. We receive the items packed and inventoried and keep them in a closed warehouse until you obtain your address and your Swedish personal number, then load them on the first suitable vessel. This is safer than shipping them early and paying demurrage in the Swedish port. The storage charge is set on request according to volume and duration.
Do you also ship from Sweden to Riyadh?
Yes, through our agent there. He collects from your address in Stockholm, Uppsala, Västerås or elsewhere, and the container sails from Gothenburg to Jeddah port and then goes by road to Riyadh, or the shipment flies from Arlanda to King Khalid Airport. A returnee’s used baggage is cleared in the Kingdom as personal effects with a contents list.
