Who ships a car from Kuwait to Spain?
Most of the cars that leave on this route are neither sold in Spain nor registered there. They belong to Kuwaiti families who spend the summer on the Andalusian coast and prefer the car they know to a hire car for three months. After them come the cars of Spanish and other European residents whose work in Kuwait has ended, then those of enthusiasts and racing teams, and lastly what companies and embassies send. We serve the individual, the company, the government body and the diplomatic mission on the same ship; what differs is the paperwork:
| The owner | What they send | The method that suits | The car’s status in Spain |
|---|---|---|---|
| A family summering in Marbella or Malaga | A family 4×4 or a luxury car | Container to Algeciras, or air | Temporary admission on Kuwaiti plates |
| A European resident returning home | The car they drove in Kuwait | RoRo, or a container with their effects | Change-of-residence relief if its conditions are met |
| A motorcycle or classic car enthusiast | A motorcycle or an old car | Private container | Temporary for a trip, or import under its rules |
| A company, embassy or government body | Official cars or work vehicles | Containers on one booking | Depends on the body’s status and its letters |
How does Home Safe serve the Kuwait route as a Saudi establishment?
We say it as it is: Home Safe is an establishment registered in Jeddah, and we have neither a branch nor a yard in Kuwait. Shipments on this route are collected by Kuwaiti shipping and clearing agents we work with, and they are the ones who send the recovery truck to your home, take the car into Shuwaikh Port and lodge its customs declaration. Our team runs the file from the start: it chooses the method and the Spanish port, books the ship, reviews the papers and follows up the broker in Spain. This is what the service includes:
- Collection: a recovery truck from your address in any Kuwaiti governorate, with a condition report and photographs before the car moves.
- Clearance in Kuwait: the customs declaration at the port or airport is lodged by our agent there.
- Clearance in Spain: a customs broker lodges the temporary admission declaration, the import declaration or the relief application.
- Delivery: a carrier from the port to the door of the house, an inspection and then the handover of the key.
This article is about vehicles only. Anyone sending furniture, appliances or parcels to Spain will find what concerns them in the article on international shipping to Spain, and our service for Gulf cars in general is on the car shipping from the Gulf states page.
Will Spain accept your car? Summer visitor, new resident or importer
Spain sets no limit on the age of an imported car as some countries do, so your car is not refused for being old. What changes is what you pay and what is asked of the car, and that follows your own status, not the type of car. There are three statuses, and knowing which applies to you is the first thing we settle with you, because a mistake here costs a third of the car’s price or more.
| Point of comparison | Summer visitor | Moving to live there | Importer or seller |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plates | Kuwaiti, as they are | Export plates, then Spanish | Export plates, then Spanish |
| Duty and tax at the port | Not paid | Relieved under conditions | Paid in full |
| Registration tax | Not required | Relieved under conditions | According to the car’s emissions |
| Approval and inspection | Not required | Required before the plates | Required before the plates |
| Length of stay | Up to six months within twelve months | Permanent | Permanent |
Temporary admission is the case for most of our Kuwaiti customers. The rule in force in the European Union is that a non-resident brings in a private car registered outside it and uses it free of duties, as long as it leaves before its period ends and is not sold, hired or lent to a resident there. But a car that arrives shipped is not driven across the border by its owner, so a declaration is lodged for it at the port customs office, and the office may ask for proof of its departure date or a guarantee. We ask the broker what the Valencia or Algeciras office requires before the car sails, not after it arrives. The Kuwaiti insurance policy does not usually cover Spanish roads, so a temporary policy valid for Spain is bought before the day of collection. For anyone planning to drive on to countries that ask for the customs carnet, there is an explanation on the Triptik page.
Shipping cars by sea from Shuwaikh Port in Kuwait to Valencia and Algeciras
Shuwaikh Port is Kuwait’s leading commercial port; it lies west of the capital on Kuwait Bay, and its berths receive container ships and roll-on/roll-off vessels alike. Most cars bound for Europe leave from it. Some lines load at Shuaiba Port in the south of the country, so we set the port according to the line booked, not by habit. The sea route is long: the ship runs the whole length of the Arabian Gulf, passes the Strait of Hormuz, rounds the Arabian Peninsula in the Arabian Sea, then climbs the Red Sea to the Suez Canal and after that crosses the Mediterranean from east to west.

| Stage | What happens | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| Collection from your address in Kuwait | Inspection, photographs and condition report, then a recovery truck to the yard | 1 day |
| Kuwaiti traffic and customs papers | The export transaction or the temporary exit papers, then the declaration | 3–6 days |
| Entry to Shuwaikh Port and waiting for the ship | Handover to the RoRo terminal, or lashing in the container and sealing it | 2–5 days |
| Sailing to Valencia or Algeciras | Direct on some schedules, and with a change of vessel at a hub port on most | About 22–32 days |
| Clearance at the Spanish port | The temporary admission or import declaration, or the relief application | 3–6 days |
| Delivery to the address | Car carrier, then inspection and handover of the key | 1–3 days |
Why these two ports? Valencia is on the east coast, one of Spain’s largest ports for containers and cars alike, and the nearest seaport to Madrid. Algeciras is in the far south at the Strait of Gibraltar, a container hub port called at by many lines coming from the Suez Canal, and only about 80 km from Marbella. So anyone living in Andalusia saves hundreds of kilometres on the carrier by using it. On arrival the car is matched twice: its chassis number against the bill of lading before customs, and its condition against the loading report before you sign. The times in the table are approximate and shift as the routes the shipping lines follow shift. The ports we work through are on the ports and gateways page.
Transit time for shipping a car from Kuwait to Spain
Roughly half the time goes in the Arabian Sea and the Red Sea before the ship sees the Mediterranean, and from a port on the Gulf there is no way round that. What we can control is the days before and after the sailing: papers ready before entry to the port, a ship with a near date, and a broker waiting for the car in Spain with its file.
| Method | Door to door | What governs its date |
|---|---|---|
| Private 20ft container | 35–45 days | Container sailings from Shuwaikh are closely spaced |
| RoRo to Valencia | 38–50 days | The car-carrier schedule, which has fewer sailings |
| By road to Jeddah, then by sea | 22–32 days | Crossing the land border and the sailing date from Jeddah |
| Air freight | 4–7 days | An aircraft that accepts the car’s height and weight |
What lengthens the time?
- A traffic fine or bank lien that surfaces on the day of the visit, so the car misses its ship and waits for the next.
- August in Spain, when offices and brokers work at half strength.
- An incomplete relief file, so the car stays in the port yard and storage is charged on it.
Times for the other routes are on the transit times page.
Price of shipping a car from Kuwait to Spain
The freight on a car carrier is worked out on the space the vehicle occupies, not on its weight or its price. That is why we have divided the price into three sizes. The figures below are in Saudi riyals because that is our establishment’s currency, and beside them we have put the approximate equivalent in Kuwaiti dinars. They include collection from your address in Kuwait and sea freight to the Spanish port. They do not include Spanish taxes or transport inside Spain.
| Vehicle or service | Price starts from | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon or hatchback | SAR 4,900, about KWD 400 | To Valencia or Algeciras |
| Mid-size 4×4 | SAR 5,800, about KWD 475 | Crossovers and mid-size family cars |
| Large 4×4 or pickup | SAR 6,900, about KWD 565 | More if the dimensions exceed the usual |
| Private 20ft container for one car | Set on request | According to the line and the week of shipping |
| Two cars in a 40ft container | Set on request | The freight is split between the owners |
| Motorcycle on a base inside a container | Set on request | Alone or with its owner’s car |
| Air freight for the car | Set on request | By weight, dimensions and fuel type |
Prices circulating in the market: we found no one publishing a specific price for this direction itself. What is published for the opposite direction, from Spanish ports to Shuwaikh and Shuaiba, runs between USD 1,875 and USD 3,590 for the sea freight alone. A figure of about USD 1,400 for a saloon and USD 1,450 for a 4×4 circulates for shipping a car inside a container from Kuwait to Spain. For a full container from Gulf ports to north European ports, between USD 2,200 and USD 3,900 is published depending on its size. Most of these figures are quay to quay, with no collection, no clearance and no port charges.
| Factor | How it changes the price |
|---|---|
| Size of the vehicle | Length, width and height are the unit of charge on RoRo |
| Method | A private container costs more than RoRo, and each car’s share falls if two share it |
| Spanish port | The sea freight is close, and the difference lies in the carrier’s charge after it |
| Spanish city | Marbella is 80 km from Algeciras and more than 600 km from Valencia |
| Season | May to July sees higher demand, and so does the return in September |
How do you cut the cost?
- Send the car two months before your travel date and choose sea, as air is several times its freight.
- Agree with a relative or neighbour who summers in the same area on a 40ft container for two cars.
- Ask for the port nearest your Spanish home, then compare the total and not the sea freight alone.
The pricing items are explained on the pricing factors page.
Collecting cars from Kuwait City and the governorates
Kuwait is a small country in area, and the furthest inhabited address in it is no more than an hour and a half from Shuwaikh Port. So collection from any governorate is done in one day, with no difference worth mentioning in its charge.
| Governorate | Some of its areas | Collection note |
|---|---|---|
| Capital | Kuwait City, Shuwaikh, Shamiya, Rawda, Qadsiya | The nearest to the port, and the car is handed to the yard within the hour |
| Hawalli | Salmiya, Hawalli, Jabriya, Salwa, Bayan, Mishref | Blocks with basements, so the car is brought out to the street before the truck arrives |
| Farwaniya | Farwaniya, Khaitan, Ardiya, Jleeb Al-Shuyoukh, Al Rai | Close to the airport, and most air freight requests come from it |
| Mubarak Al-Kabeer | Sabah Al-Salem, Adan, Qurain, Messila | Houses with wide entrances, and loading in front of the door |
| Ahmadi | Fahaheel, Mangaf, Mahboula, Ahmadi, Sabah Al-Ahmad, Khiran | The nearest to Shuaiba Port if the line is booked from there |
| Jahra | Jahra, Saad Al-Abdullah, Qasr, Abdali | An appointment arranged a day ahead |
RoRo or container for a car leaving the Gulf?
A RoRo ship is a car park that sails: a port worker drives the car in over a stern ramp, parks it on a covered deck and lashes it to the floor. It stays with no cover and no wrapping, because the line wants its chassis number visible, and it is driven a second time on discharge. A container is a steel box the car enters at the agent’s yard in Kuwait; it is strapped down by its wheels, then closed in with a seal that is broken only before Spanish customs.
| Point of comparison | RoRo | Private container | Shared container for two cars |
|---|---|---|---|
| Usual port of arrival | Valencia | Valencia or Algeciras | Valencia or Algeciras |
| Belongings with the car | Not accepted | Accepted with a declared list | Accepted with a list for each owner |
| A car that does not run | Not accepted | Winched inside | Accepted if it goes in first |
| Freight | Lowest | Highest | In between |
Our advice on this route: RoRo for an everyday car that runs and lands at Valencia, and a container for everything else. The two methods are detailed on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.
Shipping 4x4s, pickups and motorcycles from Kuwait to Spain
These three are what is most often sent from Kuwait to Andalusia in summer, and each has a different measurement problem. The 4×4’s problem is height, the pickup’s is length, and the motorcycle’s is that it does not stand up by itself. That is why we ask for the actual figures of the vehicle as it is today, with its tyres and its additions, not the figures in the maker’s handbook.

| Vehicle | The container that suits it | How it is secured | What we watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mid-size 4×4 | Standard 20ft | Straps on all four wheels and timber chocks | Folding the mirrors, as the door width is limited |
| Large or lifted 4×4 | High-cube 20ft, or high-cube 40ft | Straps on all four wheels, and chains for the heaviest | The standard door opening is about two and a quarter metres, and the high-cube about thirty centimetres more |
| Double-cab pickup | 40ft | Straps on all four wheels | Its length may exceed the inside length of a 20ft container, which is under six metres |
| Motorcycle | Any container, alone or in front of the car | A steel base gripping the front wheel, and straps from four points | Draining most of the fuel and disconnecting the battery |
For anyone who will register the vehicle in Spain: an eight-cylinder engine falls into the highest registration tax bands, and customs may classify a pickup as a goods vehicle with a duty unlike that on a passenger car, so we ask the broker how your model is classified before shipping. The duty on a motorcycle under the rules in force is lower than that on a car. None of this touches anyone who enters temporarily and returns.
Shipping more than one car in a single container
A 40ft container takes two mid-size cars one behind the other, and three small cars if one of them is raised on an inclined rack inside a high-cube container. The container’s freight is the same whether it carries one car or two, so each car’s share comes down to something close to the RoRo freight, with the protection of the closed box.
- The gap: a space between the two cars and a timber barrier, so the nose of the second never touches the tail of the first however the ship rolls.
- The papers: one bill of lading for the container, and a separate file for each car with its chassis number and its owner.
- Insurance: each car is insured for its own value, and its condition report is separate.
Container sizes and what they hold are on the container sizes page.
Commercial and heavy vehicles, racing cars and sensitive cars
Some of what we are asked for does not go into a container at all, and some goes in but cannot take what an ordinary car takes. A lorry, a bus or a heavy machine travels on the deck of a roll-on/roll-off ship if it runs, or on an open-sided flat rack if it is wider or taller than a closed container.
- Lorries, buses and plant: they are measured first, then it is decided whether they are rolled onto the ship or lifted onto a flat rack, and a crane lift is arranged at both ports. The details are on the heavy equipment shipping page.
- Racing and test cars: their ground clearance is small, so they are loaded on long, shallow ramps. Their tyres and parts are shipped with them in numbered crates, and they enter Spain on temporary admission for the event and then return.
- Classics and supercars: a container for one car, fabric straps that do not touch the rims, moisture-absorbing bags, and a video sent before the door is closed.
- Electric and hybrid cars: accepted by most lines with conditions on the battery’s state of charge, and we confirm the condition of the line booked before collection.
Preparing the car before the recovery truck arrives
A car that stands closed for five weeks, passes from the heat of the Gulf to the humidity of the Red Sea, and is then opened by a European customs officer: that is what we prepare it for.
- Wash it thoroughly underneath, as desert dust and caked mud are things the inspection at European ports stops at.
- Keep the fuel at a quarter of a tank or less, as that is the condition of shipping lines and airlines.
- Take everything out: transaction papers, the toll tag, perfumes and air fresheners, and what is in the door pockets.
- Photograph it in daylight from all four sides, with the roof, the rims, the cabin and the odometer reading.
- Disable the alarm, hand over one key, and keep the second with you when you travel.
Fuller guidance is in the car shipping guide.
Procedures for a car leaving or being exported from Kuwait
The competent authority is the General Traffic Department of the Ministry of Interior, and each governorate has its section. The practice in force for the export transaction is that the owner or their agent visits the section with the documents, the car passes the technical inspection, an insurance document specific to export is presented, and then the transaction fees are paid and the export plates issued. The fees are a few dinars. A car that will return does not enter this transaction and has different exit papers. These are the steps for both cases:
| Step | For a car that will return | For permanent export |
|---|---|---|
| Fines | Settled before travel | Settled before the transaction is opened |
| Finance and lien | Written consent from the lender to the car leaving | A clearance letter and the lien lifted from the registration book |
| Visit to the traffic department | The licence is not cancelled, and the registration book stays valid throughout the trip | The export application with the Civil ID and the registration book |
| Insurance | A policy covering Spain bought for the trip | An export insurance document presented to the traffic department |
| Plates | The Kuwaiti ones stay on the car | The originals are surrendered and export plates issued |
| Kuwaiti customs | An exit declaration for a vehicle that will return, lodged by the agent | An export declaration at the port or airport |
What is available online among these steps changes from time to time, so what is in the table is the practice in force, and we confirm what applies before shipping. Anyone who is outside Kuwait at the time of the transaction needs only an official power of attorney for a relative or for our agent that mentions export or shipping.
Documents for shipping the car and what is not accepted with it
The file is assembled in Kuwait and read in Spain, so every paper that is in Arabic only has a translation attached. We review the scans days before collection and match the chassis number character by character between the registration book and the bill of lading, because a single different character stops clearance.
| Document | Who issues it | Where it is required |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle registration book | Kuwaiti traffic department | Customs in both countries |
| Export certificate, for permanent export | General Traffic Department | Shuwaikh Port, then Spanish customs |
| Civil ID and passport | The owner | Every stage |
| Purchase invoice or a valuation | The seller or an appraiser | Spanish customs and the insurer |
| Sea bill of lading or air waybill | The shipping line or the airline | Collecting the car on arrival |
| Foreigner’s identity number and proof of previous residence | The person moving residence | The relief application and registration |
And these are cases in which the car is turned back, or dealt with before it is loaded:
| Case | What happens |
|---|---|
| Fines or a lien not lifted | It does not leave Kuwait until settled |
| Belongings in a RoRo car | They are emptied, or the car is switched to a container |
| Meat, dairy and home-made food | Taken out, as their entry to the European Union in personal baggage is prohibited |
| Hunting weapons, ammunition and stun devices | Prohibited with the car, and they have their own licences and route |
| A radar detector or jammer | Removed, as its use is banned in Spain |
The general lists are on the shipping documents and prohibited items pages.
Spanish customs and taxes on a car arriving from Kuwait
This section is for those whose car will stay in Spain and who are not covered by the relief. Spain applies the European Union tariff and then its own taxes, so the importer pays three times: customs duty and value added tax at the port, then a registration tax before the plates. The value on which the first two are worked out is the price of the car with its freight and insurance.
| Item | Rule in force | Worked out on |
|---|---|---|
| Customs duty on a passenger car | 10% | The value with freight and insurance |
| Value added tax | 21% | The value and the duty together |
| Registration tax, emissions up to 120 g/km | Exempt | The car’s value in the official tables |
| Registration tax, 200 g/km and above | 14.75% | The car’s value in the official tables |
| Municipal vehicle tax | Annual, and differs between municipalities | The engine’s fiscal horsepower |
A worked example: a car worth SAR 100,000, which is about KWD 8,200, with freight of SAR 4,900. The duty base is SAR 104,900, so the customs duty is SAR 10,490. Value added tax on SAR 115,390 comes to SAR 24,232. So the total paid at the port is SAR 34,722, before the registration tax and the costs of approval.
Between the two ends of the registration tax lie two middle bands at 4.75% and 9.75%, and certain regions amend them. The Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla sit outside the mainland tax system. The figures here are the rule in force, and we check the current ones against your car before booking. The release steps are on the customs clearance page.
Change-of-residence relief for someone moving from Kuwait
The Spanish or other European employee who has finished their years of work in Kuwait, and the Kuwaiti who has obtained residence in Spain and moved there, are each entitled to bring in their car as part of their personal effects with no duty, no value added tax and no registration tax. This is the most valuable item in the file, and its conditions in force are precise:
- Previous residence: at least twelve continuous months outside the European Union, proved by the Kuwaiti residence permit or Civil ID and a certificate from the Spanish consulate.
- Ownership and use: the date on the Kuwaiti registration book has to show it registered to you for six months or longer ahead of the day you moved.
- Arrival window: the car must enter within twelve months of the date your residence in Spain began.
- Restriction on sale: it is not sold, hired out or lent for a full year after it enters.
Approval of a Gulf car and its registration in Spain
Cars sold in Kuwait are built to Gulf specifications: stronger cooling and dust filters, but they have not been tested to European standards and do not carry the certificate of conformity that the Spanish traffic authority asks for. So before Spanish plates there is an administrative path that takes from weeks to three months.
| Stage | What happens | What concerns a car arriving from Kuwait |
|---|---|---|
| Individual approval | An approved laboratory examines the car and issues a report | Needed by most Gulf-specification cars |
| Modifications | What the laboratory asks for to meet the European standard | Headlight beam pattern, a rear fog lamp, and removing the tint from the front glass |
| Import inspection | A special technical inspection at an approved station | Its appointment is booked before the car arrives where possible |
| Final registration | The traffic authority, after the taxes or the relief | It needs the foreigner’s identity number and a registered address |
Marine insurance and tracking the car until delivery
What the shipping line commits to in case of damage is a limited sum stated on the back of the bill of lading, and it comes nowhere near the price of a modern car. And the car’s policy in Kuwait stops covering it at the country’s borders. So what protects the car’s value on a journey of this length is transit insurance, written from the door of the house in Kuwait to the door of the house in Spain.
- What it covers: damage in loading and unloading, fire, theft, the sinking or grounding of the ship, and the car’s share of general average if the master declares it.
- The insured value: the market price of the car with its freight, and for a rare car an appraiser’s valuation attached to the policy.
- The claim: it rests on the condition report and the photographs taken in Kuwait, and on a remark written on the delivery receipt before signing.
As for follow-up, each shipment has one member of staff who knows its file, and a message reaches you on entry to the port, sailing, the Suez Canal transit, arrival and release. If the ship’s date changes we tell you the same day. You follow it yourself with the bill of lading or container number on the shipping line’s website. The types of cover are on the cargo insurance page, and the way to follow up on the shipment tracking page.
Delivering cars from Kuwait in Madrid, Marbella and Seville
Madrid is a capital with no sea in the heart of the plateau, Marbella a coastal town in the far south, and Seville an inland city on a river. Three destinations that no single carrier run brings together, which is why the port is chosen according to the city. After release the car is loaded onto an enclosed or open carrier and reaches the address in one to three days.

| City | The port that suits | Approximate road leg | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madrid | Valencia | About 360 km | Its centre is a low-emission zone, so a permitted delivery point is agreed |
| Marbella and Puerto Banús | Algeciras | About 80 km | Gated developments with ramps, so the car is set down at the entrance |
| Seville | Algeciras | About 190 km | The carrier does not enter the lanes of the old quarter |
| Barcelona | Valencia, or the port of Barcelona if a sailing exists | About 350 km from Valencia | Prior registration of the foreign car for the emissions zone |
| Valencia | Valencia | Within the city | The car can be collected from the port yard after release |
| Malaga | Algeciras | About 135 km | Its airport receives air-freighted cars in transit |
The key is handed over after the inspection, which is your right, not a courtesy. Check the rims, both bumpers and the roof, start the engine, and compare the odometer with the figure noted in Kuwait. If you find anything, write it on the driver’s paper before you sign. A car entering temporarily is delivered with a copy of its customs declaration, so keep it in the car all summer. The delivery-to-address service is on the door to door page.
Is there a land route from Kuwait to Spain? And what is the Jeddah route?
We do not offer a complete land route. The theoretical path crosses Iraq, or Saudi Arabia and Jordan, then Turkey, the Balkans and the whole of Europe to its west; it is thousands of kilometres with border posts whose conditions change, and car carriers do not run it regularly. Road, for us, is two short legs only: from your home to the port, and from the Spanish port to your home.
But there is a short cut we offer to anyone pressed for time: the car is loaded onto a carrier from Kuwait through the Nuwaiseeb crossing to Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea, and from there it sails to Spain without rounding the Arabian Peninsula. That saves about two weeks of sailing and adds a land border crossing and a long carrier charge, so we work out both routes for you. We confirm what the crossing requires before adopting it. The comparison between shipping methods is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Air freight for cars from Kuwait to Spain
Anyone who decided to travel late, or does not want a month at sea for their car, sends it by aircraft. It is handed over in the cargo area of Kuwait International Airport, where it is weighed, measured and secured on a metal pallet with straps over the tyres. It is then loaded onto a freighter, or into the hold of a wide-body passenger aircraft if its height allows. It lands at Madrid airport, the largest cargo airport in Spain, or at Malaga airport near Marbella, direct or through an intermediate airport depending on the flight that accepts it. From collection to delivery takes 4 to 7 days.

- Who it suits: a luxury or sports car, a car for an event with a fixed date, and anyone who wants their car in the first week of the holiday.
- Dangerous goods: every vehicle with fuel and a battery is classed as such in aviation, so a declaration signed by a certified specialist is prepared for it.
- Fuel and battery: the rule in force is that fuel does not exceed a quarter of a tank and the battery terminals are covered, and electric cars have conditions set by the carrier.
- Price: set on request by weight and dimensions; it is several times the sea freight, and falls if the return is booked with it.
The car does not move from your home before its place on the aircraft is confirmed. Our air services for goods other than cars are on the air freight page.
Steps for shipping your car from Kuwait to Spain
Eight steps, three of them yours and the rest ours. The first matters most, because everything after it is built on what you send in it.
- You send to 0552803439 the type of car, its year and its dimensions if it is modified, your governorate in Kuwait, your city in Spain and the length of your stay.
- We settle the car’s status with you: temporary admission, a mover’s relief, or import with its duties.
- You receive the price itemised by method, port and transit time, with an estimate of what is paid in Spain, if anything.
- You settle the fines and bring the bank’s paper, and the traffic department transaction is completed if the car is being exported.
- Our agent collects the car from your home, writes its condition report and photographs it.
- It enters Shuwaikh Port or the airport, its Kuwaiti declaration is lodged, and it is loaded.
- The ship sails and you receive the tracking number and a copy of the bill of lading; then our agent clears it at the Spanish port.
- The carrier reaches your address, and you inspect, sign and take the key.
Shipping cars from Spain to Kuwait
The route works in both directions, and most return requests come at the end of summer. A Kuwaiti car that entered Spain temporarily is loaded at Valencia or Algeciras for Shuwaikh, its Spanish declaration is closed on exit, and it goes back onto its record with its plates and registration book. A car bought in Spain, on the other hand, has its plates cancelled there and enters Kuwait as an import. The rule in force in Kuwait is a customs duty of 5% of the car’s value with its freight, a limit on the age of a used car that is quoted as five years with an exception for classics, and a technical inspection before licensing. Left-hand drive is a condition. Ask us before you pay for a car there, and we will confirm what applies at the time. The destination page is shipping to Kuwait.
Home Safe’s tips before shipping your car from Kuwait to Spain
This is the gist of what we tell a Kuwaiti customer in the first call, and most of it is settled while the car is still in the parking at home:
- Work out your return date before your outward date, as the temporary admission period counts from the day the car lands, not from the day you arrive.
- Do not lend the car to a relative living in Europe even for a day, as that forfeits the temporary admission status.
- Choose Algeciras if your home is in Andalusia, and Valencia if it is in Madrid or the east.
- Buy the Spanish road insurance before the day of collection, as the carrier sets the car down and the driving is yours.
The ways of securing a car inside the container are on the packing and lashing page.
How do you choose a car shipping company from Kuwait to Spain?
Every advertisement promises speed, safety and keeping to the date. What separates one company from another is what it says when you ask it about the Spanish end, and about the day the ship is late. These are questions we suggest you put to us and to others:
| Ask about | A reassuring answer | A worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| How long the car will stay | It asks you before it quotes a price | It asks for the plates to be surrendered for every car |
| The Spanish port | It chooses it according to your city | One port for every customer |
| Who collects in Kuwait | It names the agent and their role | It claims branches with no address |
| Documentation | A signed condition report and photographs before loading | Collection by phone with no paper |
Common mistakes when shipping cars from Kuwait to Spain
Seven mistakes recur on this route, and all of them are caught by one call before booking:
- Booking three weeks before the holiday on a sea route that takes six.
- Exporting a summer car and surrendering its plates, then paying import duties on it on the return to Kuwait.
- Shipping a car to Valencia when the house is in Marbella, so it covers more than six hundred kilometres on the carrier.
- Forgetting the roof rack, so the car does not fit the booked container on loading day.
- Leaving the car in Spain after its period has ended, meaning to come back to it next summer.
- Sending a pickup or a big-engined 4×4 for registration without reckoning the duty and the top emissions band.
- Signing for delivery at the carrier at night without an inspection, then finding the scratch in the morning.

Frequently asked questions about car shipping from Kuwait to Spain
Which is the best car shipping company from Kuwait to Spain?
The one that asks you two things before the price: how long the car will stay in Spain, and who takes it in at Shuwaikh Port. Home Safe is a registered Saudi establishment that runs this route through agents in Kuwait who handle collection, the traffic department and the port, and through a customs broker in Valencia or Algeciras, while your file stays with one team that answers on 0552803439.
How much does it cost to ship a car from Kuwait to Spain?
A saloon starts from SAR 4,900, which is about KWD 400, a mid-size 4×4 from SAR 5,800, and a large 4×4 or pickup from SAR 6,900, from your address in Kuwait to the Spanish port. A private container, a motorcycle, transport inside Spain and air freight are priced on request.
How many days does a car take from Kuwait to Valencia or Algeciras?
The sailing itself takes about 22 to 32 days, because the ship leaves the Arabian Gulf and rounds the Arabian Peninsula before it enters the Suez Canal, and the container usually changes vessel at a hub port. With the days for the traffic department, the port and clearance, the time door to door becomes 35 to 50 days.
Do I pay customs in Spain if I am only spending the summer there?
Not under the rules in force. European Union rules allow a person living outside it to bring in a private car registered in their own country on temporary admission, for up to six months within twelve months, with no duty and no tax. The condition is that it keeps its Kuwaiti plates, is not sold, hired out or driven by a resident of the Union, and leaves before the period ends.
Do I need export plates if the car is coming back to Kuwait?
No. Export plates are for a car that leaves the Kuwaiti register for good. A summer car travels with its valid registration book and its original plates, and needs what Kuwaiti customs asks for the exit of a vehicle that will return, plus an authorisation from the owner to the shipping agent.
How do I export my car from Kuwait permanently?
You visit the General Traffic Department in your governorate with your Civil ID, the registration book and an insurance document specific to export, the car passes the technical inspection, and then the transaction fees and the export plates are paid for. Before that, fines are settled and any bank lien is lifted.
Can a Gulf-specification car be registered in Spain?
Yes, but after an individual approval, because it carries no European certificate of conformity. An approved laboratory examines it and may ask for the headlight beam pattern to be changed, a rear fog lamp to be added, the tint to be removed from the front glass and evidence of its emissions. It then goes through a technical inspection specific to imported cars.
Which suits better from Shuwaikh Port: RoRo or a container?
RoRo is for an ordinary running car whose owner wants the lowest freight, and it usually lands at Valencia. A container is for a luxury or high-value car, for a motorcycle, for anyone who wants to land at Algeciras near Marbella and Seville, and for anyone shipping two cars together.
Does a large 4×4 fit into a standard container?
It does if its height with the roof rack is less than the door opening, which is about two and a quarter metres on a standard container. A lifted car or one carrying a roof tent needs a high-cube container, whose door is about thirty centimetres taller. A long pickup is too much for a 20ft container, so it is loaded into a 40ft one.
How is a motorcycle shipped from Kuwait to Spain?
It is stood on a steel base that grips its front wheel and strapped down from four points on its frame, then put into the container alone or beside its owner’s car. Most of its fuel is drained and its battery is disconnected. Its price is set on request according to its size and whether it travels on its own.
Can the car be shipped by air from Kuwait International Airport?
Yes. The car is handed over in the cargo area of Kuwait International Airport and secured on an air cargo pallet, and it reaches Madrid or Malaga airport direct or through an intermediate airport, depending on the flight that accepts its dimensions. It is then moved on an enclosed carrier to Madrid or Marbella. The time is 4 to 7 days, and the price is set on request once the weight, dimensions and fuel type are known.
Can I put the summer suitcases inside the car?
On RoRo nothing is left in the car, and the shipping line refuses it if it finds belongings inside. In a private container, suitcases and effects can be sent beside the car with a detailed list presented to Spanish customs. Food such as meat and dairy does not enter the European Union in personal baggage, so do not put it in the boot even if it is tinned.
My car has instalments owed to a bank in Kuwait. Can it be shipped?
It cannot be exported permanently while the lien stands on its registration book, as the traffic department will not complete the transaction before a clearance letter from the bank or finance company. For a temporary trip the lender usually asks for written consent to the car leaving the country. Ask for that paper first, as it is the slowest step.
Do you bring the car back from Spain to Kuwait after the holiday?
Yes, and it is better to book both directions in one order. The car is collected from your address in Marbella or Madrid and loaded at Valencia or Algeciras for Shuwaikh Port, or it returns by air. Because it left with its plates and registration book, it goes back onto its record as it was.
When should I book for the car to be in Marbella at the start of the holiday?
For sea freight, book eight to nine weeks before your arrival date, since the journey door to door comes close to two months at its longest, and demand for ships from the Gulf to the Mediterranean rises before the summer. For air freight, two to three weeks are enough.
