Who needs a furniture move from the UAE to Egypt?
The Egyptian community in the Emirates is among the largest Arab communities there, and most requests on this route come from a family that has ended its working years and wants to take its home back as it is. But the requests are not all of one kind, and what works for a four-room home does not work for ten cartons. So we first ask about the owner’s situation and then make a suggestion:
| Owner of the shipment | What they usually move | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| A family returning for good | All the furniture of the home, its appliances and its library | A private 20ft or 40ft container |
| A single employee whose contract has ended | A bedroom, a television and cartons of clothes and books | A shared container, by the cubic metre |
| Someone furnishing a marital flat in Egypt | Appliances and furnishings bought in the markets of Dubai and Sharjah | A shared container, with a review of the expected duties |
| A resident sending to family | Cartons, gifts and household items | A shared container, or air for light items |
| A trader or showroom owner | Goods on pallets or by the container | A commercial container with a registered importer |
| Someone with an urgent need | Bags, papers and a piece the home needs quickly | Air freight to Cairo |
How do we run this route from Jeddah?
We set the matter out as it is. Home Safe is a Saudi establishment, with no office or warehouse in its own name in the Emirates or in Egypt. Collection, packing and bringing the container into Jebel Ali Port are done by partner shipping agents of ours there, and clearance, transport and assembly in Egypt are done by other partners. Our role is to join the two ends in one plan and one price, and to give you someone to speak to in Arabic at any hour from seven in the morning to eleven at night.
- Before the move: we review your furniture list, estimate the volume, and choose the container and the Egyptian port best suited to your governorate.
- In the Emirates: we fix the dismantling and packing day with the agent and check the exit papers before the port is entered.
- At sea: we follow the vessel and tell you the expected arrival date and any change to it.
- In Egypt: we coordinate clearance and inland transport, and fix the unloading and assembly appointment with your family.
What each party undertakes, and what is and is not in the price, is written in the booking confirmation before you pay anything.
Ways of moving furniture from the UAE to Egypt
The sea container is the way furniture travels on this route, because a home is measured in cubic metres and a ship is the cheapest carrier of volume. The aircraft is for what is weighed in kilograms and cannot wait. There is also a third way across Saudi territory and the ferry, which we mention because people ask about it, and we explain its limits in its place. Here is the comparison:
| Method | From where to where | Time to the door | For which shipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Private container | Jebel Ali → Sokhna or Alexandria | 25–40 days | A whole home, or furniture with a car |
| Shared container | Agent’s warehouse → Jebel Ali → the Egyptian port | One to two weeks longer | One or two rooms and cartons |
| Air freight | Airports of the Emirates → Cairo airport | 3–6 days | Luggage, urgent pieces and documents |
| Truck and ferry across Saudi Arabia | Emirates → Duba → Safaga | Confirmed on request | Subject to availability, not a fixed service |
The general comparison of the three methods is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Sea container shipping from Jebel Ali Port to Sokhna and Alexandria

Jebel Ali in Dubai is the largest container port in the region, and weekly services leave it for the Red Sea. The empty container comes to the door of your building, or the furniture is moved packed to the agent’s yard if the street cannot take it. The pieces are stowed and the load is secured with straps, then the door is closed with a seal whose number is written on the bill of lading. The vessel sails round the Arabian Peninsula: out through the Strait of Hormuz to the Arabian Sea, then into the Red Sea through Bab al-Mandab and northwards.
Here the route divides according to your address. The port of Sokhna lies on the Gulf of Suez south of the Canal, so the vessel reaches it first and pays no transit toll. The port of Alexandria, with Dekheila, is on the Mediterranean, and the vessel reaches it only after passing through the Suez Canal or by changing vessel at an intermediate port. Some services call at Jeddah on the way, so we confirm the service available and its duration on the booking day:
| Port of arrival | Location | Suits those living in |
|---|---|---|
| Sokhna | Gulf of Suez, about 120 km from Cairo | Cairo, Giza, New Cairo, 6th of October and Suez |
| Alexandria and Dekheila | Mediterranean Sea | Alexandria, Beheira, the north coast and the western Delta |
| Port Said | Northern entrance of the Canal | Port Said, Ismailia and the eastern Delta |
| Damietta | Mediterranean Sea | Damietta and Mansoura when a suitable service is available |
To see how much each box takes, open the container sizes page; our sea freight page covers how the service itself works.
Stages of the journey and its duration from door to door
The figure a returnee usually hears is the sailing time, and that is less than half the story. The furniture spends days before the vessel and days after it, and anyone who counts the delivery date on the days at sea alone finds himself in an empty flat. These are the stages as they actually run, with estimated durations that we fix against the vessel’s schedule:
| Stage | What happens | Estimated duration |
|---|---|---|
| Dismantling, packing and loading | At your home, with a numbered inventory of the pieces | 1–2 days |
| Export formalities and port entry | A customs declaration for personal effects, and waiting for the vessel | 3–6 days |
| Sailing | From Jebel Ali round the Arabian Peninsula to the Red Sea | 14–21 days depending on the service |
| Clearance at the Egyptian port | Inspection, matching against the list and assessment of duties if any | 4–8 days |
| Inland transport and delivery | A truck to the address, then unloading and assembly | 1–3 days |
What lengthens the time?
- A change of vessel: an indirect service adds days at the intermediate port, and this is known on the booking day.
- The owner’s absence: clearance of a returnee’s effects moves faster when he or his attorney is present with his passport.
- A list that does not match the contents: one unlisted piece makes the inspection closer and longer.
- Summer and festival seasons: returnees are many, so container slots and inland trucks are busy.
Durations for the other routes are on the transit times page.
Prices for moving furniture from the UAE to Egypt
We write the price in Saudi riyals because that is the currency of our invoice, and put its equivalent in dirhams beside the headline figure. For the item where we found a published market price, we have set a starting price below it. Where we found no published price we have not invented a number; we set it for you once we have the furniture list:
| What you move | How it is charged | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture of a two-bedroom flat, around 25 cubic metres, by container | The shipment, door to door | SAR 14,090, about AED 13,800 |
| One or two bedrooms in a shared container | Per cubic metre | Set on request |
| Cartons and belongings by sea | Per cubic metre, with a minimum | Set on request |
| A private 20ft or 40ft container for a large home | The container, at the line’s rate on the booking day | Set on request |
| Luggage and urgent pieces by air | Per chargeable kilogram | Set on request |
| A car | The car, after its entry conditions are checked | Set on request |
| Temporary storage, and electrical and plumbing work | A separate item | Set on request |
Prices quoted in the market: moving companies in the Emirates do not publish price lists for this route on their pages and ask for a survey first. The published figure we came across appeared in a press report on the cost of leaving the Emirates: AED 15,000 to 20,000 for the furniture of a two-bedroom flat of around 25 cubic metres by sea to Egypt. The old article on this page did not mention a single price. Shipping-line rates move from one month to the next, so the binding figure is the one written in your booking confirmation.
When comparing two offers, ask about three things: whether the price includes packing and dismantling, whether it includes clearance and transport inside Egypt, and whether Egyptian customs charges are outside it. An offer that ends at the quay of the Egyptian port is not the same as one that ends in your bedroom.
What determines the price of moving your furniture?
Two homes with the same number of rooms can differ in price by thousands, because one has a library and a full kitchen and the other has light furniture. The volume after packing is the basis, and after it come items that add and subtract. This is what we look at before writing the figure:
| Factor | Its effect on the price |
|---|---|
| Volume of the furniture in cubic metres | It decides the container size, or your share of the shared container |
| Private or shared container | Private is faster and dearer; shared costs less for a small volume |
| Port of arrival | Rates to Sokhna and Alexandria differ with the vessel’s service |
| Delivery governorate | Greater Cairo is closer to Sokhna; Upper Egypt is further and costs more |
| Floor and lift | Carrying on the stairs at either home is extra work |
| Special pieces | A piano, a safe, marble and chandeliers need wooden crates |
| Season | Summer and the end of the school year are busier |
Our pricing factors page goes through these seven points one by one, and a rough volume for your own home comes out of the cubic metre calculator in a minute.
How do you cut the cost of moving from the UAE to Egypt?
- Sort before the survey: what you will sell in the Emirates stays off the list, so the volume shrinks and the price with it.
- Compare the value of a piece with its freight: a chipboard wardrobe may cost more to ship and assemble than to buy its like in Egypt.
- Choose shared for a small volume: anything under half a 20ft container costs less in a shared container.
- Book weeks before the summer: early booking gives you a direct vessel and a packing date of your choice.
- Fill the empty spaces: clothes and bedding inside drawers, the washing machine and the fridge take cartons off the list.
- Do not duplicate appliances: one appliance of each type reduces what may be assessed in duties in Egypt.
Private container or shared container?
This is the first decision in the move, and the duration and the price are built on it. The working rule is that a home of three rooms or more takes a private container, and someone with one room and cartons shares. Between the two lies a middle zone that we settle after measuring the furniture, because a 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres of stowed furniture:
| Point of comparison | Private container | Shared container |
|---|---|---|
| Suits | A whole home, or furniture with a car in a 40ft | One or two rooms and cartons |
| Price unit | The whole container | The cubic metre |
| Loading | Outside your home, sealed in your presence | At the agent’s warehouse with other shipments |
| Handling | Once at loading and once at unloading | Loading and unloading at two warehouses |
| Duration | 25–40 days | Longer, waiting for the container to fill |
| Clearance in Egypt | In the name of the furniture’s owner alone | Each shipment has its own papers after unloading |
The survey: the information we ask of you
A home is not priced over a phone call. We begin with a survey carried out by the agent at your home, or a video tour you send on WhatsApp in which you open the wardrobes, the storeroom and the balcony. From the survey come the volume, the container size, the number of workers and the loading day. For it to be accurate we need four things from you:
- The collection address in the Emirates: the emirate, the district and the floor, and whether the building has a service lift and set hours for moves.
- The delivery address in Egypt: the governorate, the city and the floor, and whether a truck can enter the street.
- The type and quantity of furniture: the number of rooms, the large pieces, the appliances, and what needs dismantling or a wooden crate.
- The date: the day you vacate the home and the day you travel, and whether you need storage between them.
Packing returnees’ furniture and appliances in Dubai and Sharjah

The container spends weeks at sea, passing through the heat of the Gulf and the humidity of the Red Sea, and shaking with every wave. Packing here is therefore not like packing for a move within the city. The agent’s crew arrives at your flat in Dubai or Sharjah with its materials and begins with the pieces that need dismantling, then the appliances, then the cartons. Every piece receives a number that is written in the inventory with a description of its condition. These are the types of packing and where each is used:
| Type of packing | What it consists of | For which pieces |
|---|---|---|
| Soft wrapping | Moving blankets, then tight stretch film, in one layer or more | Sofas, mattresses and upholstered chairs |
| Bubble wrapping | Film with air bubbles that absorbs impact | Glass, mirrors and polished wooden surfaces |
| Carton packing | Double-wall cartons, corrugated sheets and corner pieces | Crockery, books, clothes and wardrobe panels |
| Bubble wrap with carton | A layer of bubbles under reinforced carton | Electrical appliances and delicate kitchenware |
| Wooden crate | Timber made to the size of the piece, with foam padding | Large televisions, chandeliers, marble and paintings |
We also place moisture-absorbing bags inside the container when the load includes natural wood or leather. Materials and stowing methods are explained on the packing guide page, securing the load inside the container on the packing and lashing page, and a practical guide is in the article packing furniture for a move.
Dismantling and assembling bedrooms, bookcases and wardrobes
What is damaged most in an international move is a piece shipped standing that should have been dismantled. The large wardrobe, the bed, the bookcase and the free-standing kitchen units are all taken down to panels. The technician writes on each panel the number of the piece and its position, and gathers its screws and hinges in a bag taped to one of its panels. In this way whoever assembles it in Egypt finds everything in place, even if he was not the one who took it apart.
The crew that attends follows the size of the home: a carpenter for dismantling and assembly, a bedroom fitter and a kitchen fitter when needed, and workers for packing and carrying. Wall-mounted air conditioners, water heaters and plumbed-in washing machines need an electrician or a plumber to disconnect them safely. This work is arranged through the agent and written as a separate item, and we do not promise it before confirming that it is available on the loading day.
Shipping fridges, washing machines, televisions and electrical appliances
The markets of the Emirates are wide in appliances, and many returnees take all the appliances of the home and may add to them. They work in Egypt without a voltage converter, because the supply in the two countries is close, 230 volts here and 220 volts there at 50 hertz. The only difference is the plug. But appliances are also the first thing the customs officer looks at, so write every appliance in the list with its type and condition.
- Fridges and freezers: unplugged a day before, emptied and dried, with shelves secured, and loaded upright.
- Washing machines: drained, with the drum transit bolts refitted if you have kept them.
- Televisions: in the original carton if available, otherwise in a wooden crate, with nothing placed on top.
- Split air conditioners: dismantled by a technician who pumps the gas down into the outdoor unit, each unit packed separately.
- Ovens and hobs: grids and burner heads removed and wrapped on their own, and the glass door secured.
- Small appliances: in numbered cartons, with their number and type written rather than the phrase “electrical items”.
Collection from Dubai, Sharjah and the other emirates
All seven emirates are close to Jebel Ali, and the furthest is no more than two to three hours away by truck. The collection stage is therefore short wherever your home is. What differs is the building’s rules: many towers in Dubai and Abu Dhabi require a move permit from the building management and a booking of the service lift at set hours, so ask for it days before the loading day.
| Emirate | Areas we collect from through the agent | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai | Deira, Bur Dubai, Al Qusais, Al Nahda, Al Barsha, Dubai Marina, International City and Silicon Oasis | Closest to the port; a building permit is required in the towers |
| Sharjah | Al Nahda, Al Taawun, Al Majaz, Al Qasimia, Muwaileh and Al Khan | Congestion on the Sharjah–Dubai road at peak hours is allowed for |
| Ajman and Umm Al Quwain | Al Nuaimiya, Al Rashidiya, Al Jurf and Al Salamah | Usually loaded in one day |
| Abu Dhabi | Abu Dhabi Island, Al Khalidiyah, Mohammed bin Zayed City, Mussafah and Al Reem Island | The container may leave from Khalifa Port if a suitable service exists |
| Al Ain | Al Jimi, Al Muwaiji and Zakher | By prior appointment, with a transport charge to the port |
| Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah | Al Nakheel, Al Dhait, Fujairah city and Khor Fakkan | By prior appointment, with a transport charge to the port |
Egyptian customs and returnees’ furniture
This is the subject that worries a returnee most, and the one whose rules change most. Egyptian customs law counts personal effects and used household furniture among the cases of exemption, but leaves the controls to its regulations and to the judgement of the customs officer at inspection. What we write here is the practice in force; we confirm what applies to your list before shipping, and we promise no one that his container will pass without charges:
| Item | Treatment in force |
|---|---|
| Used clothing and personal effects | Among the cases of exemption, as long as they have no commercial character |
| Used household furniture | Listed among the cases of exemption; inspected, with quantity and condition taken into account |
| One used appliance of each type | Regarded as household use, and examined more closely than furniture |
| New appliances in their boxes, or duplicates | Assessed for duty and value added tax |
| Gifts and new purchases | Their exemption limit is small, and anything above it is charged |
| Mobile phones | They have a separate registration and fee system, so they do not go in the container |
| Goods in commercial quantities | Treated as an import, needing a registered importer and advance registration of the cargo |
Charges, if due, are not part of the moving fee and are paid by the owner of the shipment in Egypt. We tell you before loading what we expect, so that you can allow for it. The service is explained on the customs clearance page, and the destination is covered more fully in the article shipping from Saudi Arabia to Egypt.
Documents required in the UAE and in Egypt
The papers for a personal move are not many, but they are in two countries, and each country reads what concerns it. In the Emirates an export declaration for personal effects is opened in the owner’s name. In Egypt the consignee’s name on the bill of lading is matched with his passport letter for letter. The practice in force is as in the table, and we check the copies on WhatsApp before the loading day:
| Type of shipment | In the UAE | In Egypt |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture of someone returning for good | Copy of the passport and Emirates ID, proof that the residence visa is cancelled or about to expire, and a numbered inventory | The owner’s passport with travel stamps, the national ID card and the delivery address |
| Cartons and belongings of a continuing resident | Copy of the passport, residence visa and Emirates ID, and a list of the contents of each carton | The consignee’s name as on his ID card, his address and an Egyptian mobile number |
| A shipment received by a relative | The above, with the relative’s full details on the bill of lading | A power of attorney for the person receiving, and a copy of the owner’s passport |
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the exporter’s trade licence | Importer’s card and the advance cargo registration number |
| Air parcel | The sender’s ID and a statement of the contents and their value | Name, address and mobile number |
Samples of these papers are on the shipping documents page.
What does not go into the container
The shipping line bars some items, customs in the two countries bar others, and a third group should not travel in a container at all because money cannot make up for its loss. A single carton holding a barred item stops the whole container, so go through the list before packing begins:
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Gas cylinders, fuel, paints and solvents | Barred, as they are flammable materials |
| Weapons, ammunition, imitations and fireworks | Barred |
| Medicines | Personal quantities with the prescription, better carried by the traveller |
| Drones, radio sets and surveillance cameras | With prior permission from the competent authority in Egypt |
| New phones and tablets | Not placed in the shipment |
| Gold, cash, passports and original certificates | In hand luggage |
| Food, plants and soil | They do not withstand the voyage, and some are restricted by plant quarantine |
| Antiquities and old artefacts | They need proof of their source; ask us before packing them |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering furniture in Cairo, Alexandria, Giza and Mansoura

After release, the private container leaves on a truck for your address, is opened in front of you and its seal is matched with the number on the bill of lading. If the street cannot take it, it is unloaded at the partner’s warehouse and the furniture is moved in smaller vehicles. Shipments in a shared container are sorted at the warehouse and distributed by city. The following durations are counted from the day of customs release:
| Area | Its cities | Delivery time after release |
|---|---|---|
| Cairo | Nasr City, Heliopolis, Maadi, Helwan, New Cairo, Obour and Shorouk | 1–2 days |
| Giza | Haram, Faisal, Dokki, Mohandessin, 6th of October and Sheikh Zayed | 1–2 days |
| Alexandria | Smouha, Sidi Bishr, Agami and Borg El Arab, with Damanhour and Kafr El Dawwar | 1–3 days |
| Mansoura and the Delta | Mansoura, Talkha, Tanta, El Mahalla El Kubra, Zagazig, Benha, Kafr El Sheikh and Damietta | 2–3 days |
| Canal cities | Suez, Ismailia and Port Said | 1–3 days |
| Upper Egypt | Beni Suef, Fayoum, Minya, Assiut, Sohag, Qena, Luxor and Aswan | 3–5 days |
| Red Sea, Sinai and the oases | Hurghada, Sharm El Sheikh, Arish and Kharga | Agreed at booking |
Further information on the destination is on the shipping to Egypt page.
Unloading, assembly and arranging the home in Egypt
Delivery with us does not end at the door of the building. The partner’s crew carries the pieces up to the flat, opens the packing and reassembles what was dismantled, guided by the numbers written on the panels. It then places each piece in the room you choose and collects the packing waste before leaving. If you have a layout in mind for the furniture in the new home, send it before the delivery day, so that each piece is put in its place the first time.
The consignee matches the pieces with their numbers in the inventory before signing. Any remark on a piece is written in the delivery record and photographed at the time, as that is what a claim is built on if insurance exists. Hanging chandeliers and curtains and connecting appliances to water and electricity is technical work that is requested in advance and charged on its own.
Temporary storage before travel or after arrival
Often the date for vacating the home in the Emirates comes before the vessel’s date, or the furniture arrives before the flat in Egypt is ready. In both cases the furniture is kept packed and numbered in a closed warehouse with the partner, for a period that is agreed. We point out that a container remaining in the Egyptian port beyond the free days incurs storage charges, so it is better for the furniture to be cleared and moved to an ordinary warehouse if your receipt of it is delayed. The storage price is set on request, and the service is explained on the storage page.
Moving traders’ goods from the UAE to Egypt
Dubai is a re-export market, and many Egyptian traders buy from it. Commercial goods take the same sea route, but their papers are not those of furniture: a commercial invoice, a packing list and a certificate of origin, and a registered Egyptian importer who enters the cargo details in the advance cargo registration system before loading. Without that registration number the cargo is not accepted at the Egyptian port. Duty on goods follows their tariff heading, with value added tax of 14% on most goods under the practice in force. The price is set on request, and the details are on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from the UAE to Egypt
Moving a car from Jebel Ali is technically possible in two ways: inside a container, where it is lashed by its wheels and may share a 40ft container with the furniture of the home, or on a car carrier onto which it is driven. The obstacle is not the transport but Egypt. Bringing a used car in permanently and registering it on Egyptian plates is governed by strict conditions on the year of manufacture, and by initiatives for Egyptians abroad that have their own terms and deadlines. We therefore check your car’s case against the rule in force first, and book no space for it before that. The price is set on request. Export formalities from the Emirates are in the article car shipping from the UAE, and the transport methods on the car shipping page.
Can furniture go overland across Saudi Arabia and the ferry?
The question recurs, and the answer is that there is no continuous land route to Egypt. What is possible in theory is for a closed truck to enter Saudi Arabia through the Al Ghuwaifat – Batha crossing and cross the Kingdom westwards to the port of Duba on the Red Sea, a distance of roughly 2,500 km. There the whole truck boards the ferry and drives off at Safaga, where inspection and clearance take place, and then continues to the warehouse in Egypt. This is the system by which we ship from the cities of the Kingdom, explained in the article land freight from Saudi Arabia to Egypt.
From the Emirates, however, it adds a third border and a long transit, and depends on a truck licensed for transit and a suitable ferry sailing being available. We therefore do not offer it as a fixed service, and state no duration or price for it before confirming it at the time of your request. For most homes the container from Jebel Ali remains clearer and involves less handling.
Air freight from the UAE to Egypt

There are many daily flights between the Emirates and Cairo, and the flight takes about four hours. Cargo leaves from the airports of the Emirates that have cargo terminals, namely Dubai International, Al Maktoum, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, according to the flight available. A parcel reaches the consignee’s door in Cairo in 3–6 days, most of which go on clearance and distribution. A returnee uses it for what cannot wait for the container: bags of clothes, school papers and certificates, and an appliance or a piece the home needs in its first week.
| Point of comparison | Air freight | Sea container |
|---|---|---|
| Time to the door | 3–6 days | 25–40 days |
| Price unit | The chargeable kilogram, the greater of actual and volumetric weight | The container or the cubic metre |
| Suits | Luggage, documents and light urgent pieces | Furniture, large appliances and a whole home |
| Not accepted | Perfumes, aerosols, loose batteries and liquids | Flammable materials and the general prohibited items |
| Place of delivery | Cairo first, then the governorates a day or two later | All governorates after release |
| Price | Set on request | The furniture of a flat from SAR 14,090 |
A sofa is light in weight and large in volume, so on an aircraft it is charged by its volume rather than its weight, and that is why furniture does not travel by air. Work out the chargeable weight of your bags with the volumetric weight calculator; the service is explained on the air freight page.
Steps for moving furniture from the UAE to Egypt
- You send the list: photos or a video tour of the home, with the two addresses and the date you vacate.
- We estimate the volume: and suggest a private or shared container and the Egyptian port that suits you best.
- You receive the booking confirmation: with the price, what it does and does not include, and the terms of service.
- We check the papers: copies of the passport, Emirates ID and residence visa, and a first version of the inventory.
- Loading day: dismantling, packing and numbering, then stowing the container and sealing it in your presence.
- Export and sailing: a customs declaration at Jebel Ali, then the bill of lading and the container number for tracking.
- Clearance in Egypt: the owner or his attorney attends with his passport, and the container is inspected and released.
- Delivery: transport to the address, unloading and assembly, and matching the pieces with the list before signing.
Tracking and insuring the furniture
The container has an eleven-character number written on the bill of lading, and with it you can see where it is on the shipping line’s website at any time. We send you a notice at every stage as well, because the line’s website does not tell you what is happening at customs. Insurance is optional, and its premium is a percentage of the value you declare in a priced list. It covers the risks of the sea voyage according to the terms of the policy, and does not cover what was not written in the list. More on the tracking and cargo insurance pages.
Moving in the opposite direction: from Egypt to the UAE
Someone arriving in the Emirates on a new employment contract moves his furniture in a container from Sokhna or Alexandria to Jebel Ali, and the sea route is the same in both directions. The practice in force in the Emirates is that the used personal effects and household furniture of someone arriving to reside for the first time may be exempt from duty under conditions set by the local customs authority, and that other goods bear duty of 5% of their value. We confirm what applies before shipping. The price is set on request.
Tips before moving your furniture to Egypt
- Start arranging six weeks before the date you vacate, as booking the vessel and the building permit take time.
- Do not cancel your residence visa before learning from the agent which paper the export declaration requires while it is valid.
- Keep the invoices of expensive appliances if you have them, as they show that the items are used and were bought long ago.
- Photograph every valuable piece before and after packing, and keep the photos until you sign for receipt.
- Travel with a bag that will last you a month, and put in it nothing the home is waiting for from the container.
- Arrange for a relative in Egypt to hold a power of attorney if you will arrive after the container.
How do you choose a furniture moving company from the UAE to Egypt?
Advertisements for moves to Egypt are many, and some are a phone number and a truck. The difference shows in the questions you are asked before the price, and in the paper you receive after it. A company that asks neither about your governorate nor about the condition of your appliances does not know what awaits your container at the port:
| What you ask about | The reassuring answer | What calls for caution |
|---|---|---|
| Status of the company | A commercial registration and a booking document in the establishment’s name | A transfer to a personal account with no contract |
| Pricing method | A survey or video tour, then a written volume | A flat price from the first call |
| Who carries out the work in Egypt | Names the clearing agent and the haulier and the limits of each one’s work | “We get it to the port and you sort it out” |
| Customs | Reviews the list and estimates what is expected | A promise of no charges on anything |
| Limits of the price | Written: where it ends and which items lie outside it | A single figure with no breakdown |
| Inventory | A numbered list of which you take a copy | Loading with no list and no photos |
Common mistakes in moving from the UAE to Egypt
- Booking the flight before knowing the vessel’s date, then leaving the furniture to be packed unsupervised.
- Buying new appliances days before the move and writing them down as “used furniture”.
- Putting the new phone or the laptop in a wardrobe drawer.
- Writing the consignee’s name on the bill of lading differently from his passport, which holds up the release.
- Leaving the barbecue gas cylinder or paint tins among the storeroom items.
- Comparing an offer to the door of the home with an offer to the port as if they were one price.
- Forgetting to book the service lift in the tower, so the crew stands for hours while the container waits.

Frequently asked questions about moving furniture from the UAE to Egypt
How much does it cost to move furniture from the UAE to Egypt?
The furniture of a two-bedroom flat, around 25 cubic metres, starts from SAR 14,090, about AED 13,800, by container from door to door. A single room, cartons, a private container and the air rate per kilo are set on request, because they follow the volume you have, the vessel rate on the booking day and your governorate in Egypt. Send your furniture list to 0552803439.
How long does furniture take from Dubai to Cairo?
By container, 25 to 40 days from the loading day at your home to the door of your flat in Cairo. The sailing itself is about two to three weeks depending on the vessel’s service, and the remainder goes on Jebel Ali formalities, clearance at the Egyptian port and inland transport. By air, 3 to 6 days for urgent pieces.
Does Home Safe have an office in the UAE?
No. Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah, and this route is carried out through partner shipping and packing agents in the Emirates and partner clearing agents and hauliers in Egypt. We draw up the plan, book, check the papers and follow up, and you keep one number from the first survey to the last piece.
Which suits my furniture better: Sokhna or Alexandria?
That follows your address in Egypt. Sokhna lies on the Gulf of Suez; it is the closest to Cairo, Giza and the Canal cities, and a vessel coming from the Gulf reaches it before entering the Suez Canal. Alexandria is on the Mediterranean and suits its own residents, Beheira and the western Delta. We choose the port once we know the governorate and the vessel service available.
Is an Egyptian returning from the UAE exempt from customs on his furniture?
The exemption is neither automatic nor complete. Used household furniture and personal effects are among the items Egyptian law exempts, but the final word belongs to the customs officer when he opens the container and compares it with your list and with the length of your stay abroad. Anything still in its box, or duplicated within its type, normally falls outside the exemption. As instructions change, we put your list to the clearing agent in Egypt before the container is sealed.
Will my appliances from the Emirates work in Egypt?
In most cases, yes. The supply in the two countries is close, 230 volts in the Emirates and 220 volts in Egypt, at 50 hertz in both. What differs is the plug: the Emirati one has three flat pins and the Egyptian one two round pins. You therefore need a new plug or a plug adaptor, not a voltage converter.
Do you dismantle bedrooms and kitchens and reassemble them in Egypt?
Yes. In the Emirates the crew dismantles bedrooms, wardrobes, bookcases and free-standing kitchen units, numbers every panel and keeps its screws in a bag fixed to it. In Egypt the partner’s crew reassembles them in the rooms you specify. Electrical and plumbing work, such as fitting an air conditioner or connecting a washing machine, is requested as a separate item.
Can I ship one room or cartons only?
Yes, in a shared container that carries the shipments of more than one customer, with your share charged by the cubic metre. It costs less than a private container but takes longer, because it waits for the container to fill and is then unloaded in a warehouse before distribution. Its price is set on request once your shipment has been measured.
What papers are needed to move furniture from the UAE to Egypt?
From the Emirates: a copy of the passport, the Emirates ID and the residence visa, or proof of its cancellation for someone leaving for good, and a numbered list of the pieces and cartons. In Egypt: the owner’s passport showing the travel stamps, the national ID card, the delivery address, and a power of attorney if the person receiving is not the owner.
Should I put phones and gold inside the container?
No. Phones arriving in Egypt have their own registration and fee system, and a new phone found among the furniture holds up the release of the whole container. Gold, cash, passports and original certificates travel with you in your hand luggage, and cargo insurance does not cover them.
Do you move my car from the UAE to Egypt?
The transport itself is possible, in a container or on a car carrier. But bringing a car into Egypt permanently and registering it is bound by strict conditions on the year of manufacture, and by initiatives for Egyptians abroad that open and close. We therefore do not book for a car before checking its case against the rule in force. The price is set on request.
Can furniture be moved overland from the UAE to Egypt?
There is no continuous land route, as the Red Sea separates the Arabian Peninsula from Egypt. What is possible is for a closed truck to cross Saudi territory to the port of Duba, board the ferry with its load and drive off at Safaga. It is an option we offer according to what is available at the time of the request, not a fixed service, and the sea container remains the standard on this route.
How long does air freight from the UAE to Egypt take, and what does it suit?
From 3 to 6 days to the consignee’s door in Cairo, and a day or two more in the governorates. It suits excess bags, documents and an urgent piece the home needs before the container arrives. It does not suit furniture, because charging by volumetric weight raises its cost considerably. The price is set on request.
Do you deliver furniture to Mansoura and Upper Egypt?
Yes. After release, the container or its contents are moved to Cairo, Giza, Alexandria, Mansoura, Tanta, Zagazig and the Canal cities, and to Upper Egypt as far as Aswan. Distant governorates add days to the Cairo timing, and the inland transport charge to them is written as a clear item in the booking confirmation.
How do I track the container, and is the furniture insured?
The container has a number that can be followed on the shipping line’s website, and we send you a WhatsApp notice at every stage: leaving your home, entering the port, sailing, arrival, release and the delivery appointment. Insurance is optional, with a premium calculated on the value you declare, and we recommend it for a whole home. The photographed inventory made before packing is the basis of any claim.
