Who ships from Madinah to Austria, and what do they ship?
The route between Madinah and Austria is used by two kinds of sender. The first is a visitor who came from Vienna or Linz to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and bought more dates and gifts than his ticket allows. The second is a resident of Madinah, Saudi or expatriate, travelling to Austria to study, work or receive treatment, who needs to move his belongings or his home. Each has a method that suits him:
| Sender | Usual shipment | Best method | What matters to him first |
|---|---|---|---|
| A visitor returning to Austria | Extra suitcases, boxes of dates and gifts | Air by the kilogram, from the hotel | Flying without excess weight |
| A visiting group or tour | The luggage of the group together | Consolidated air, or a sea part load if time is not pressing | Sorting the luggage by owners’ names |
| A scholarship student or a patient travelling for treatment | Clothes, books and things for the accommodation | Sea part load, with one urgent bag by air | A date ahead of the start of study or treatment |
| A family moving to live there | The whole household with appliances and the car | A full 20 or 40 ft container | The customs relief for people relocating |
| A date or gift merchant | Cartons of Ajwa, Safawi and Sukkari, prayer rugs and beads | Container or part load, with a sample by air | European food requirements |
Shipping route from Madinah to Austria and transit time
The sea journey from Madinah passes through seven stages, three of them on land before and after the sea. The truck starts at your house and takes the motorway to Jeddah in about five hours. After export formalities the container is lifted onto a ship that goes up the Red Sea to the Suez Canal and then the Mediterranean. From there it either heads for the northern Adriatic, which is closest to Austria, or goes round Europe to the North Sea ports. The table below gives the time of each stage for a full container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Loading in Madinah | Dismantling, packing and inventory, then stuffing and sealing the container | One day |
| Madinah to Jeddah Islamic Port | About 420 km by truck | One day |
| Export formalities | Saudi customs declaration, entry to the port yard and waiting for the vessel | 2–4 days |
| The sea voyage | Jeddah, Suez, then the Mediterranean, on one ship or two | 12–20 days |
| The European port | Unloading the container and transferring it to train or truck | 2–4 days |
| The way to Austria | Container train or truck to an inland terminal | 1–3 days |
| Release and delivery | Austrian import declaration, then a truck to the address | 2–5 days if the papers are complete |
Time and route differ with the method. Someone whose shipment is two suitcases and a carton of dates is well served by air, and someone moving a home is suited only by sea:
| Method | Its route | Time from Madinah | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air freight | Madinah airport or Jeddah airport → Vienna airport → the address | 3–7 days | Visitors’ luggage, dates, documents and samples |
| Full container | Madinah → Jeddah port → European port → train or truck | 25–40 days | A household, furniture with a car, or wholesale goods |
| Sea part load | The consolidation warehouse in Jeddah, then the European sorting warehouse | 30–45 days | Students’ cartons, group luggage and a few pieces of furniture |
What lengthens the time?
- Visiting seasons: in Ramadan and around the Hajj season the centre of Madinah is crowded, so collection is delayed unless its slot is booked early.
- The vessel cut-off: a container that reaches Jeddah after receiving has closed waits for the next ship.
- The shared container: a part load stays in the Jeddah warehouse until the container’s volume is made up.
- The recipient’s papers: a missing confirmation of registered address or importer number stops the release in Austria.
For how long other routes take, see the transit times page; for sea against air, see the shipping methods comparison page.
From Madinah to a European port, then Austria

Austria is a landlocked country, and Madinah is far from the coast. So the 20 or 40 ft container loaded at your house first rides a truck to Jeddah Islamic Port, then comes off the ship at a port in a European country next to Austria, and then continues overland. The ports that serve Austria fall into two groups. The northern Adriatic ports, chiefly Koper in Slovenia and Trieste in Italy, are the nearest in distance. The North Sea ports, chiefly Hamburg and Bremerhaven in Germany and Rotterdam in the Netherlands, are further away but have more sailings.
| European port | Country | How the container continues to Austria | Cities it mostly serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koper | Slovenia | Container train or truck through southern Austria | Graz, Vienna and Linz |
| Trieste | Italy | Train across the Alps, or truck | Salzburg, Villach and Vienna |
| Hamburg and Bremerhaven | Germany | Scheduled container trains to Upper Austria and Vienna | Linz, Salzburg and Vienna |
| Rotterdam | The Netherlands | Train or truck across Germany | Part loads that are sorted there |
As for Yanbu port, about 220 km from Madinah, we use it when we find a sailing there that suits the destination and the date, which is not always available. In every case the container keeps its seal from the moment it is closed in Madinah until it is opened for clearance in Austria, because it crosses the European countries under the customs transit procedure. Details of the service are on the sea freight page, and port sailings in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping prices from Madinah to Austria
The price of shipping from Madinah is made up of four parts that are best seen separately: packing and road transport to Jeddah, the sea or air rate, transport inside Europe from the port to the Austrian city, and the service of delivery inside the home. The figures below are the starting prices of our services, reckoned from Jeddah port or from the airport:
| Type of shipment | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Documents and papers | Express | SAR 83 |
| Luggage, dates, parcels and samples | Air to Vienna airport | SAR 23 a kilogram |
| Cartons, luggage and a little furniture | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| Saloon car | RoRo to the European port | SAR 2,800 |
| Household furniture or commercial goods | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| The truck from Madinah to Jeddah port | Closed truck or car transporter | Set on request, by the load |
| European transport and delivery in Austria | Train, then truck | Set on request, by the city |
Prices circulating in the market for the Madinah–Austria route vary widely from one offer to the next. International express is advertised from about SAR 250 for a small parcel, and furniture by air at about SAR 28 a kilogram. For a sea part load about SAR 1,800 a cubic metre is quoted, for a 20 ft container about SAR 13,500, and for shipping a car with clearance about SAR 18,500. The gap mostly comes down to where the price stops: does it end at the European port, or does it cover the train, the clearance and the delivery to the flat? What moves the container rate itself is set out in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
| Factor | Its effect on the price of shipping from Madinah |
|---|---|
| Volume and weight | The cubic metre is the basis by sea, and chargeable weight by air. Work out your volume in the CBM calculator |
| Place of collection | Hotels in the central area need a small vehicle ahead of the truck |
| The season | Ramadan and the Hajj season raise demand for trucks and flights |
| The Austrian city | Vienna, Linz and Salzburg are near container terminals; mountain villages are further |
How do you cut the cost?
- Separate the light from the heavy: clothes and gifts by air, dates and books in a sea carton.
- Fill the truck going to Jeddah, as half a truck costs nearly as much as a full one over this distance.
- Book outside the peak seasons, and compare a full container with a part load if your volume nears 15 cubic metres.
Each item is explained on the pricing factors page.
What is different about shipping from Madinah?
Madinah differs from Jeddah and Makkah in three things that change the shipping plan. It has an international airport, so an air parcel does not necessarily need a road journey. It has no port, so every container covers a long distance before it sails. And most of its districts are flat with wide streets, so the truck stops in front of the house, except around the Prophet’s Mosque with its hotels and pedestrians. Large trucks enter the city centre at hours regulated by the traffic department, restrictions increase in the seasons, and we confirm the hours in force before loading day.
| Particular | Its effect on the shipment | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport | Air freight starts from Madinah itself | We hand parcels over at the airport, and switch them to Jeddah when we find no suitable flight |
| No port in Madinah | A long road haul before sailing | We book the container’s space on the ship first, then move the truck to match its date |
| Hotels of the central area | No truck parking and no room for packing | A small vehicle collects from the hotel entrance, and packing is done in the warehouse |
| Regulated truck entry | Loading inside a set time | We fix the appointment with the customer within the permitted hours |
| Dates | A food affected by heat and pressure | Reinforced cartons with nothing heavy on top, and morning loading in summer |
| The Haramain train | Passengers only, no cargo | We collect the traveller’s luggage before he goes to the station |
Shipping visitors’ luggage and Madinah dates from Madinah to Austria

Visitors’ suitcases and gifts are what we collect most in Madinah. A visitor from Austria spends some days near the Prophet’s Mosque, buys from the central date market and the gift shops, and then finds that the airline charges a high rate for excess weight. The answer is to fly with hand luggage and let the rest follow him home. Our agent comes to the hotel, and collection from the hotel takes place at the entrance or reception, where he weighs the pieces one by one and writes the weight on a receipt of which you keep a copy.
Madinah dates in their boxes are the first gift. The region is the Kingdom’s third-largest date producer, and its market sells Ajwa, Safawi, Sukkari and Medjool. We ask that the boxes stay sealed as they left the factory, and then place them in a reinforced carton on which no suitcases are loaded. Dates are among the fruits for which no plant health certificate is required on entry to the European Union under the rules currently applied, and we confirm this before every shipment above a personal quantity. These are the rules for what visitors most often carry:
| Item | Do we ship it? | What you should know |
|---|---|---|
| Ajwa and other dates | Yes | Sealed factory boxes and a personal quantity; a commercial quantity has its own papers |
| Copies of the Quran, prayer rugs and beads | Yes | Their number and value are written down |
| Perfumes and oud oil | In a limited quantity | Flammable liquids restricted by air, and an exempt gift holds no more than 50 grams of them |
| Zamzam water | No | It is not exported inside shipments, and the traveller has his own pack to carry |
| Cheese, meat and ghee | No | Food of animal origin is banned in personal parcels to the European Union |
On every piece we stick a tag carrying a number and the recipient’s name, city and telephone in Austria, and the same number is written on the receipt. For anyone carrying gifts for relatives in different places we make a parcel for each relative, because Austrian customs exempt a personal gift up to 45 euros per recipient under the rules currently applied. Packing methods are in the packing guide.
Shipping household furniture from Madinah to Austria
A family moving from Madinah to Austria ships its furniture in a full container starting from SAR 11,000, and anyone content with a bedroom and some cartons chooses a part load from SAR 5,500. The furniture has a long road ahead: five hours by truck, then weeks at sea, then a train crossing the Alps. So every piece is packed on the understanding that it will be lifted and set down more than once.
- Dismantling: we take apart bedrooms, dining tables and bookcases, and put the screws of each piece in a numbered bag taped to it.
- Protection: foam rolls and blankets for wood, double-wall boxes for glass and the television, and plastic film that keeps damp off mattresses and sofas.
- The contents list: we write it in English, numbered by carton, and it is the paper Austrian customs check against the relief application.
- In Austria: unloading and carrying up to the floor, reassembling what we dismantled, and removing the packing waste.
Before you decide what to take, look at two things. The electricity supply in Austria is 230 volts at 50 hertz with European sockets, so some appliances with motors do not work there as they do here. And homes in Vienna and Salzburg are smaller than the villas of Madinah and their lifts are small, so ask about the size of the staircase and the door. More detail is on the furniture shipping page.
Full container or sea part load: which suits your shipment from Madinah?
What decides between the two options is the number of cubic metres. With a full container, the container comes to Madinah, is loaded and sealed in front of you and travels alone. With a part load, your goods are taken by truck to the consolidation warehouse in Jeddah, placed with other shipments bound for Europe, and then sorted in a warehouse there before being delivered to Austria.
| Item | Full container | Sea part load |
|---|---|---|
| How it is charged | The container rate, whatever is inside | By the cubic metre |
| Price starts from | SAR 11,000 | SAR 5,500 |
| Time from Madinah | 25–40 days | 30–45 days |
| Number of handlings | One loading and one unloading | Loading in Madinah, then consolidation, then sorting |
| For whom | A whole household or a merchant’s shipment | A student, a visitor or a small family |
As a rough guide: a 20 ft container holds about 28 cubic metres and is enough for a flat of two to three rooms. A 40 ft container holds about 58 cubic metres and is enough for a villa, or for furniture with a car. If your shipment comes to 12 to 15 cubic metres, ask us for both prices and compare. The table of dimensions is on the container sizes page.
Shipping parcels and documents from Madinah to Austria
Personal and small commercial parcels are sent by air and delivered at the door, and an envelope of documents starts from SAR 83. In Austria the parcel comes under the European Union system: every parcel arriving from outside the Union has an electronic declaration filed for it, import VAT is collected on its value unless it is an exempt gift, and customs duty is added if its value exceeds 150 euros.
- Official papers: university certificates, attestations and powers of attorney go in a stiffened envelope and are handed over only against a signature.
- Description of contents: we write the items one by one with their number and value in English, since a word like “gifts” on its own is not accepted by customs.
- Form of the address: street and building number, then staircase and flat number, then the four-digit postcode, then the city.
- The recipient’s telephone: an Austrian number that is answered, because the delivery company sends the tax payment link and the delivery slot to it.
The service is explained on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping large and small commercial goods from Madinah to Austria
Madinah’s exports to Austria are few in kind and clear in their market: dates first, then date products such as syrup, maamoul and paste, then prayer rugs, beads and religious gifts. They are ordered by the owners of oriental grocery shops and restaurants in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg. A small quantity travels as a part load on pallets, a large one in a container, and what is affected by heat in a refrigerated container. The Austrian importer needs a European customs registration number called an EORI, and pays duty according to the commodity heading, then import VAT of 20%.
- Dates and date products: a food label in German stating the ingredients, net weight, best-before date and the importer’s details, and a certificate of origin with the invoice.
- Gifts and rugs: a label showing the material and country of manufacture, and a packing list with the number of pieces in each carton.
- Perfumes and incense: cosmetics have a responsible person registered in the Union, and anything flammable is declared as dangerous goods.
- Matching papers: the invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading with the same description and the same quantities.
Packing and wrapping services for shipping from Madinah to Austria
Packing on this route is designed for three conditions in succession: the heat of the road between Madinah and Jeddah, the damp of the sea inside the container, and the cold of Europe on arrival in winter. That is why we pack what we ship ourselves, and do not accept weak or used cartons for breakable things:
| What is packed | Method | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Boxes of dates | Reinforced carton with dividers, nothing stacked on it | Dates get crushed and their syrup runs in the heat |
| Wooden furniture | Blankets, foam and cardboard corners | Scratches and changes in humidity |
| Glass, screens and crockery | Double box with padding on every side | Vibration on the road and the train |
| A merchant’s goods | Treated pallets, stretch wrap and strapping | The condition for wood entering the Union, and ease of lifting |
How loads are secured inside the container is on the packing and lashing page.
Car shipping from Madinah to Austria with customs clearance
Your car is not driven to the port; it is lifted onto a car transporter that takes it down the road from Madinah to Jeddah. We photograph it before loading and record its condition in a report. At the port there are two methods: the RoRo vessel, whose rate for a saloon starts from SAR 2,800 to the European port and which requires the car to be roadworthy and empty of belongings; or the container, in which the car is lashed by its wheels and may share space with declared luggage. After unloading in Europe it is carried on a transporter to your city, because it does not run on a cancelled Saudi plate.
Clearance in Austria is the heaviest part of the cost. A car arriving from outside the European Union goes through the items below, which are as published by the Austrian authorities, and we confirm those in force before shipping:
| Item | Its amount or meaning |
|---|---|
| Customs duty | 10%, reckoned on the price of the car and the cost of moving it to the Union’s border |
| Import VAT | 20% on the total after duty |
| Standard consumption tax | Paid at first registration, and higher the greater the engine’s emissions |
| Relief for people relocating | Removes duty and import VAT from a private car used for six months before the move; the consumption tax remains |
| Technical approval | A car built to Gulf specification undergoes an individual test, and changes to lights and exhaust may be required |
| Export papers from the Kingdom | Vehicle registration, proof of ownership, the export certificate from the traffic department after the plates are handed in, and the owner’s ID |
Give us the car’s model, year of manufacture and engine size, and we send you an estimate of what will be paid in Austria before you hand in the plates. The taxes on a large old car may exceed its value, and then selling it in Madinah and buying another there is cheaper. The two methods are explained on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages, and the general rules in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Austrian customs and transfer-of-residence relief
Austria follows the common customs tariff of the European Union and adds import VAT of 20% on most goods. The most important exception is for someone leaving Madinah to live in Austria: his belongings, furniture and car enter free if he meets conditions published by the Austrian Ministry of Finance. In summary:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Residence before the move | At least one full continuous year outside the European Union |
| State of the goods | Owned by the person and used by him for at least six months |
| Time of import | Within 12 months of taking up residence in Austria |
| After release | Selling, hiring out or lending them is barred for 12 months |
| Covered | Furniture, household appliances, furnishings, the private car and family belongings |
| Not covered | Tobacco, alcohol, commercial vehicles and new unused goods |
| Supporting documents | The relief application form, the registered-address slip, proof of previous residence in the Kingdom, and the contents list |
A scholarship student has a treatment of his own for study materials and the used furniture of his room, and we go over its conditions with him before shipping. Our advice to someone relocating is to arrive ahead of his shipment: he gets there and registers his address at the municipality while the container is still at sea, so it does not wait at the terminal and no storage charges build up.
Documents required for shipping from Madinah to Austria
We gather the papers and check them in Madinah before loading day, because correcting a letter in a name or a figure in a value is easy here and costly once the shipment has reached Austria. The papers differ with the kind of shipment and the status of its owner:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A visitor’s luggage and gifts | Copy of the passport, a list of contents with values, and the recipient’s address and telephone number | A parcel for each recipient |
| Furniture of a relocating family | Passport and Austrian residence permit, registered-address slip, relief application and a numbered list | New items are kept apart from used ones |
| Dates and commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and EORI number | Extra food documents depending on the product |
| A car | Vehicle registration, proof of ownership, export certificate and the owner’s ID | The relief application if its owner is relocating |
Duties and taxes due in Austria are paid there by the recipient, and we give him an estimate before shipping so that he is not surprised. Each document is explained on the shipping documents page, and the release steps on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped from Madinah to Austria, or needs a permit
A shipment is examined twice: when it leaves the Kingdom and when it enters the European Union, and each side has its list. What we most often hand back to visitors in Madinah is Zamzam water, home-made food and medicines.
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Zamzam water | Not accepted in any shipment |
| Narcotics and the like | Absolutely prohibited |
| Weapons and their parts, ammunition and fireworks | Prohibited unless a licence has been issued |
| Meat, dairy, ghee and cooked food | Not allowed in personal luggage and parcels |
| Medicines | Restricted when sent to private individuals |
| Seedlings, seeds and soil | Need a plant health certificate, palm offshoots included |
| Perfumes, lithium batteries and spray cans | Limited on aircraft, and the excess travels by sea |
| Tobacco, shisha molasses and alcohol | We do not accept them for shipping |
The detailed list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering Madinah shipments in Vienna, Linz and Salzburg

Most delivery addresses on this route are in three cities. Vienna has the largest number of Muslims and Arab students, and the airport where air shipments land. Linz is the capital of Upper Austria and an industrial city on the Danube, with container terminals nearby that receive trains from the ports. Salzburg and the towns around it lie by the German border and have a container terminal serving the west of the country. In each of them delivery is right to the address, not at the terminal or the warehouse.
| City | State | How the shipment arrives | What we deliver there most |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Vienna | Vienna airport for air, and the container terminal on the Danube for sea | Visitors’ suitcases, dates and family furniture |
| Linz | Upper Austria | Container train from the northern ports or from Koper | Employees’ furniture and shop goods |
| Salzburg and around | Salzburg | Train from Trieste or from Germany, then truck | Visitors’ luggage and gifts |
| Graz | Styria | Train from Koper | Students’ cartons |
| Innsbruck | Tyrol | Truck from Salzburg or from Munich | Air parcels and students’ belongings |
The local delivery company calls the recipient a day before delivery to fix the hour, as delivery without an appointment is unusual in Austria. Other European destinations are in the article shipping from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
Tailored shipping solutions for individuals, companies, government bodies and embassies
We do not sell one service in a fixed mould. We draw up a plan for each customer from the size of his shipment, his budget and his date: we may split the shipment between air and sea, combine it with another shipment to bring its cost down, or change the method if the travel date changes. This is what we offer each group:
| Group | Service | What we take care over |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals, families and visitors | Luggage, dates, furniture and a car, door to door | The gift allowance, the conditions for people relocating, and a price with clear items |
| Companies and date merchants | Repeat shipments, consolidation from more than one supplier, and complete export papers | Regular dates, a discount for repeat business, and a report after each shipment |
| Government bodies and universities | Official documents, printed matter, and exhibition and conference materials | Recording collection and delivery, and keeping to the date of the event |
| Embassies and consulates | Documents, furniture for offices and residences, and materials for functions | Confidentiality of the contents, the list and bill of lading worded as the mission requires, and relief requested by the mission through its own channels |
Air freight from Madinah to Austria

Air freight is the option for luggage and urgent parcels, and its price starts from SAR 23 a kilogram, with documents from SAR 83. Madinah’s advantage is that it has Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport, so we hand the shipment over there without a road journey. We do not count on a direct flight from it to Vienna, so the shipment passes through one transit hub. When the route via Jeddah is faster or has more capacity, we move it by truck to King Abdulaziz International Airport and it flies from there. Either way the shipment reaches the recipient within 3 to 7 days of collection.
Delivery in Vienna comes first, as its international airport is the gateway for air cargo into Austria. Once the import declaration has been lodged and whatever is due has been paid, parcels are distributed within the capital on the day of release or the next day, and reach Linz, Salzburg and Graz by truck a day or two later.
- Chargeable weight: the carton is measured and weighed, and the price is reckoned on the higher figure. A large light suitcase is charged by its volume. Try the volumetric weight calculator before closing the carton.
- Best suited to it: visitors’ luggage, boxes of dates in a moderate quantity, documents, merchants’ samples and the needs of someone travelling for treatment.
- Restricted on aircraft: perfumes, oud oil, batteries separate from their devices, and spray cans.
Details of the service are on the air freight page, and our office near Jeddah airport is covered in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Collection from the districts and governorates of Madinah
We collect from the home, office or hotel in every district of Madinah, among them Aziziyah, Difa, King Fahd, Salam, Aqool, Quba, Awali, Khalidiyah and Shuran. We also serve the governorates of the region, whose shipments are grouped with the Madinah run heading for Jeddah port or the airport and need no separate trip:
| Place of collection | Distance from Madinah | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels of the central area | Inside the city | A small vehicle at the hotel entrance, weighing in front of the luggage’s owner |
| Residential districts | Inside the city | Dismantling, packing and loading from the door of the house |
| Al-Hanakiyah | About 110 km | A day before loading day |
| Badr | About 150 km | On the truck’s way to the coast |
| Yanbu | About 220 km | Grouped with Madinah shipments or moved from there straight to Jeddah |
| Al-Ula and Mahd adh-Dhahab | The region’s most distant governorates | A dedicated trip on an agreed date |
If you travel before you have a fixed address in Austria, your goods stay in our warehouse, packed and entered in a list, and we ship them when you send the address and the registered-address slip. The terms of the service are on the storage page.

Tracking and monitoring shipments from Madinah to Austria
Every shipment has a number entered in our system when it is collected in Madinah, and from it you know where it has got to. We send an update at each point of change: the truck leaving Madinah, the container entering Jeddah port, the ship sailing, its arrival at the European port, loading onto the train, and then the release and the delivery slot.
- The ship’s position: the container number shows you where it is at sea on the shipping line’s website. The method is on the track your shipment page.
- The European stage: after the port, we are the ones who tell you about the train’s movement and arrival at the terminal, because the shipping line does not always show them.
- Insurance: an optional service charged as a percentage of the declared value of the shipment, covering the road, the sea and the train if requested for the whole journey. Details are on the cargo insurance page.
Shipping from Austria to Madinah
We work in the opposite direction with the same service. A visitor coming from Austria may send his luggage before he travels so that it is at the hotel when he arrives, a student returning to Madinah ships his books and belongings, and a merchant imports Austrian goods. Our agent collects from the address in Vienna, Linz or Salzburg, and the shipment comes by sea to Jeddah port or by air to Madinah airport or Jeddah airport. We then complete the Saudi release and move it to Madinah.
Home Safe tips before shipping from Madinah to Austria
- Book the truck at least a week ahead, as the run to Jeddah is arranged around the ship’s date and not the other way round.
- Ask the date seller for boxes sealed at the factory with the product details on them, and avoid loose dates.
- Divide gifts into parcels in their owners’ names so that each benefits from the allowance.
- Photograph valuable items and write their real value in the list, as customs and insurance are reckoned on it.
- Put no Zamzam, home-made food or medicine in shipped suitcases.
- If you are relocating, have the registered-address slip ready before the container arrives.
How do you choose a shipping company from Madinah to Austria?
A company that knows this route answers you clearly on three things: which port your container will leave from, which European port it will come off at, and who will deliver it to your home in Austria. These questions reveal the difference between one offer and another:
| Ask about | The reassuring answer | The worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| The company’s standing | An establishment with a commercial registration and premises | A broker with no name and no address |
| What the price covers | Itemised: Madinah, the sea, Europe, the door | A lump sum with no breakdown |
| The road from Madinah to the port | States the distance and the vessel cut-off | Does not know where the container sails from |
| Austrian customs | Explains the relief and what the recipient pays | Promises arrival with no charges at all |
Common mistakes when shipping from Madinah to Austria
- Calling the shipping company the night before travel, leaving no time for weighing and packing at the hotel.
- Comparing a price that ends in Koper or Hamburg with one that ends at a flat in Vienna.
- Putting a bottle of Zamzam, ghee or cheese among the clothes.
- Sending tens of kilograms of dates by air when they are in no hurry.
- Sending the whole family’s gifts in one person’s name so that they exceed the allowance.
- Loading the container before the registered-address slip has been issued in Austria.
- Handing the car’s plates to the traffic department before knowing its taxes and testing there.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Madinah to Austria
How much does shipping from Madinah to Austria cost?
The price follows the method and the volume. An urgent envelope of documents starts from SAR 83, and a kilogram of suitcases or date cartons by air from SAR 23. By sea, a part load starts from SAR 5,500, a RoRo vessel for a saloon car from SAR 2,800 to the European port, and a full container from SAR 11,000. The truck to Jeddah port and delivery inside Austria are set on request. Call 0552803439.
How many days does a shipment need from Madinah to Austria?
A parcel or suitcase by air reaches the recipient’s door in 3 to 7 days. A full container needs 25 to 40 days from the door of the house in Madinah, a part load 30 to 45 days, and a car on a RoRo vessel 28 to 42 days.
How does my container arrive when Madinah is far from the sea and Austria has no coast?
The container covers two overland legs with a sea between them. The first is inside the Kingdom: about 420 km by truck from Madinah to Jeddah Islamic Port. The ship then crosses the Red Sea and the Suez Canal to a European port such as Koper, Trieste or Hamburg. The second leg is in Europe: a container train or a truck from that port to a terminal near Vienna, Linz or Salzburg.
Why is the container not shipped from Yanbu port, which is closer to Madinah?
Yanbu really is closer, about 220 km from Madinah. But the regular container sailings to Europe mostly leave from Jeddah Islamic Port, which offers more vessels and more dates. So we rely on Jeddah, and move the container to Yanbu only when we find a sailing there that suits your date and destination.
Do you collect visitors’ luggage from hotels in the central area?
Yes. A small vehicle comes to the hotel entrance at the time we agree, because large trucks do not stop around the Prophet’s Mosque. The agent weighs every suitcase and carton in front of its owner, hangs a numbered tag on it and gives him a receipt with the weights.
Can Madinah dates enter Austria, and on what conditions?
They can. Dates are a fruit for which the European Union does not ask for a plant health certificate under the rules currently applied, so a visitor sends a personal quantity in boxes sealed at the factory. A commercial quantity is treated differently: an invoice, a certificate of origin, a label in German and an importer registered in Austria. We confirm the conditions in force before the cartons are packed.
Can Zamzam water be shipped with luggage from Madinah?
We do not ship it from Madinah or from anywhere else. Exporting Zamzam water inside shipments is prohibited, and what a traveller may take is the dedicated pack he carries on his own flight under the airline’s conditions.
Does my relative in Austria pay tax on a gift I sent from Madinah?
He does not, if it is a personal gift sent free of charge and worth no more than 45 euros, a limit taken from the rules Austrian customs currently apply. Anything above it is charged import VAT, and customs duty is added once the value goes past 150 euros.
Is there a direct flight from Madinah airport to Vienna?
We do not count on a direct flight between the two airports, as the current schedule does not include one as far as we have checked. The shipment leaves Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International Airport for a transit hub and continues to Vienna, or it goes by truck to King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah and flies from there.
Do I pay charges on my used household furniture when moving to Austria?
The furniture is free of duty and import VAT if you are transferring your normal residence to Austria and meet the conditions of the European relief. The main ones are that you have lived outside the Union for at least one continuous year, that the goods are yours and you have used them for six months, and that they enter within a year of your settling. Anyone who does not meet them pays duty and VAT of 20%.
Do you ship cars from Madinah to Austria?
We do. A car transporter carries it from Madinah to Jeddah port, where it boards a RoRo vessel at a rate starting from SAR 2,800 for a saloon, or is secured inside a container. After it is unloaded at the European port it is moved on a transporter to your city in Austria. Before booking we work out the duty, the taxes and the conformity test with you, because they come to far more than the sea rate.
Which Austrian cities do Madinah shipments reach?
We deliver in all nine Austrian states. The greatest demand is for Vienna, followed by Linz, the capital of Upper Austria, then Salzburg and the towns around it, then Graz, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt. Delivery is at the recipient’s own address.
Is there land freight from Madinah to Austria?
We do not offer it. The truck would have to cross many countries where transit procedures and visas keep changing, so it would not be right to give you an arrival date on it. Furniture, cars and goods travel by sea, and suitcases and urgent parcels travel by air.
Are shipments from Madinah delayed in Ramadan and the Hajj season?
Only collection inside Madinah is affected. In Ramadan and before and after Hajj there are more visitors, restrictions on trucks entering the city centre become tighter, and flights fill up. So we advise booking two weeks before the season, or leaving the goods in our warehouse until the pressure eases.
Do you ship from Austria to Madinah?
Yes, by both methods. Our agent takes the shipment from the sender’s address in Vienna, Linz or Salzburg, and it sails to Jeddah port or flies to Madinah airport or Jeddah airport. After Saudi customs release we move it by truck to Madinah and deliver it at the address.
