Home Safe is a shipping company from Mecca to Austria that collects luggage, gifts, furniture, cars and goods from your home or hotel and delivers them to Vienna, Graz, Wels and the other Austrian cities. Makkah has neither a port nor an airport, and Austria has no coast, so a sea shipment leaves from Jeddah Islamic Port, about 80 km away, is unloaded at a European port and continues by rail or truck in 25 to 40 days. An air shipment leaves through Jeddah airport and arrives in 3 to 7 days. Air starts from SAR 23 a kilogram, a sea part load from SAR 5,500 and a saloon car from SAR 2,800. To book: 0552803439.

Route by sea: Makkah → Jeddah Islamic Port → Suez Canal → a European port → rail or truck → Vienna, Graz or Wels · Arrival time: 25–40 days by sea, and 3–7 days by air through Jeddah airport.
In brief
- From where to where: from any district or hotel in Makkah to the recipient’s door in any Austrian state.
- The two routes: sea and air only. Sea for furniture, cars and goods, air for suitcases, gifts and documents. We do not work with a land route to Europe.
- The first leg: a truck from Makkah to Jeddah, since the port and the airport are both there.
- The last leg: a European port, then a train to a terminal on the Danube or a truck to the door.
- Transit time: 3–7 days by air, 25–40 days for a container of your own, and 30–45 days for a part load.
- Starting prices: documents from SAR 83, air from SAR 23 a kilogram, a part load from SAR 5,500 and a container of your own from SAR 11,000.

Who ships from Mecca to Austria, and what do they send?
Most shipments on this route are small and personal, which is what sets it apart from the routes out of the commercial cities. Austria has a large Muslim community that sends Umrah and Hajj pilgrims every year, and they go home with gifts, dates and prayer rugs that an airline suitcase cannot hold. Some people from Makkah travel to Austria to study, for medical treatment or to spend the summer, and some move there for work and take their home with them. Traders in Makkah’s markets send their goods to shops that serve that community:
| The shipper | What they send | The method that suits them | What they ask about first |
|---|---|---|---|
| An Umrah or Hajj pilgrim from Austria | Excess suitcases, gifts and dates | Air by the kilogram, from the hotel | That the luggage arrives before him or a few days after |
| A pilgrim group or party of visitors | The luggage of dozens of people | Consolidated air, or a sea part load to save more | A tag with each person’s name and city |
| A student or patient from Makkah | Cartons of clothes, books and living essentials | A sea part load, with the urgent items by air | Arrival for the start of term or the treatment date |
| Someone moving to live and work | Household furniture, appliances and the car | A container of their own | Transfer-of-residence relief |
| A trader from Makkah’s markets | Dates, rugs, prayer beads, abayas and perfumes | A part load or a container, with samples by air | A product label in German and European conformity |
The first two things we ask are whether the recipient lives in Austria or is a visitor, and which city the delivery is in. The first answer settles the customs treatment, and the second settles the European port and the rail terminal.
The shipping route from Mecca to Austria and how long it takes
The sea route between Makkah and Austria has five links: a truck inside the Kingdom, then a ship, then a port in a third country, then a European train or truck, then local delivery. The first link is short, as the motorway between Makkah and Jeddah puts the truck on the quay in about an hour and a half. From Jeddah the ship heads north up the Red Sea and through the Suez Canal, then either enters the Adriatic for Koper or Trieste or carries on to Hamburg and Rotterdam on the North Sea. These are the stages of a container of your own, from your door to the recipient’s door:
| The link | What happens | How long it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Collection in Makkah | Packing, inventory and loading in the hours when trucks may enter | One day |
| Makkah to Jeddah port | About 80 km on the motorway | The same day as collection |
| Export and waiting for the vessel | A Saudi export declaration, then the container is lifted on board | 2–4 days |
| Sailing | The Red Sea, Suez and the Mediterranean, direct or with a change of vessel | 12–20 days |
| The European port | The container is discharged and moved to the rail siding | 2–4 days |
| Entry into Austria | A container train to an inland terminal, or a truck | One to 3 days |
| Clearance and delivery | An Austrian import declaration, then a truck to the door | 2–5 days with complete papers |
The method is chosen by one question: when do you need the shipment? If you need it this week, your route is air, and if you can wait a month, sea costs you less:
| Method | How it travels | Time from Makkah | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air | Makkah → Jeddah airport → Vienna airport → the address | 3–7 days | Suitcases, gifts, documents and samples |
| A container of your own | Makkah → Jeddah → a European port → rail → the address | 25–40 days | A whole home, furniture with a car, or a trader’s goods |
| A sea part load | Consolidated in Jeddah and sorted in a European warehouse | 30–45 days | Students’ cartons, group luggage and one or two rooms |
| A car on RoRo | A transporter to Jeddah → a car carrier → a European transporter | 28–42 days | Cars that run and can be driven |
What lengthens the transit time?
- Makkah’s seasons: at the end of Ramadan and on the days of Hajj, collection slips by a day or more unless it is booked early.
- A change of vessel: some services to the Adriatic move the container to another ship at an intermediate Mediterranean port.
- Filling the shared container: a part load does not move until the container is full.
- The train timetable: the container train runs on set days, and whatever misses it waits for the next departure.
- The residence paper: if you claim transfer-of-residence relief and have not yet registered your address, your shipment stays at the terminal.
For how long other countries take, see transit times; how sea and air differ is set out under shipping methods comparison.
From Mecca via Jeddah port to Austria along the Danube

Many senders ask where the container is unloaded if Austria has no sea. It is unloaded twice: first at a seaport outside Austria, and then at a container terminal inside it. The most important of these terminals stand on the River Danube, which crosses the country from west to east: the Port of Vienna at Freudenau, the port of Enns, the port of Linz and the port of Krems. They are terminals where train, truck and river vessel meet.
In practice, rail carries most containers from the seaport to these terminals. Regular trains link Koper and Trieste with Graz, Villach and Enns, and others link Hamburg, Bremerhaven and Rotterdam with Wels and Vienna. The barges on the Danube mostly carry bulk cargo, and moving a container on one is arranged when a service is available. Graz and Wels are not on the river, and each has a large rail container terminal.
| Arrival terminal in Austria | Where it is | The container usually comes from | It serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port of Vienna, Freudenau | On the Danube, east of the capital | The North Sea and Adriatic ports, by rail | Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland |
| Port of Enns | On the Danube near Linz | Koper and the northern ports, by rail | Upper Austria and the surrounding area |
| Wels terminal | On the railway west of Linz | Hamburg and Bremerhaven, on scheduled trains | Wels, Salzburg and western Upper Austria |
| Graz South terminal | South of the city, on the Koper line | Koper and Trieste | Styria and Carinthia |
What matters to you is that the container stays sealed from Makkah or Jeddah to the Austrian terminal: Austria and the countries it crosses are members of the European Union, so the container passes between them under the customs transit procedure and is opened only at clearance. The sea service is explained on the sea freight page, and the port’s sailings in the article on international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping prices from Mecca to Austria
The invoice for shipping from Makkah is written in four lines: collection and transport to Jeddah, then the ship’s or the aircraft’s freight, then transport from the European port to the Austrian city, then delivery inside the building if you ask for it. The first line is small because Makkah is close to Jeddah, and the third surprises anyone who has not shipped to an inland country before. The prices below are where our services start, from Jeddah port or airport:
| The shipment | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Documents and official papers | Express | SAR 83 |
| Suitcases, gifts, parcels and samples | Air to Vienna airport | SAR 23 a kilogram |
| Cartons, luggage and one room of furniture | A sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| A saloon car | RoRo to the European port | SAR 2,800 |
| A whole home’s furniture, or goods | A container of your own | SAR 11,000 |
| Transport from Makkah to Jeddah port or airport | A closed truck or a car transporter | Set on request, by volume and district |
| Transport from the European port and delivery in Austria | Rail, then truck | Set on request, by city |
The prices quoted in the market for this route are far apart. An air parcel of up to 5 kg is offered at about SAR 750, furniture and appliances by air at between SAR 3,000 and 6,500, and air freight at between SAR 22 and 35 a kilogram. By sea, a part load is offered at between SAR 4,500 and 7,500, a 20ft container at between SAR 8,000 and 12,000, a 40ft container at between SAR 15,000 and 18,000, and a car at between SAR 6,500 and 12,000 when the European transport is included. The gap comes from one offer ending at the quay and another ending at the flat door, so always ask: where does this figure reach? What moves container rates themselves is explained in the article on container shipping prices from Jeddah.
| The factor | How it changes the price from Makkah to Austria |
|---|---|
| Volume and weight | Sea is charged by the cubic metre and air by chargeable weight. Measure your shipment with the CBM calculator |
| Your district in Makkah | A steep or narrow street needs a small vehicle ahead of the truck, which is an extra trip |
| The season in Makkah | Ramadan, Hajj and the weeks after them bring higher demand and tighter loading hours |
| The European port | The closer it is to the recipient’s city, the shorter the rail and truck leg |
| The Austrian city | Vienna, Graz and Wels are near container terminals, and the mountain villages are further |
How do you bring the cost down?
- Send the light gifts by air, and put the heavy ones, such as dates and books, in a single sea carton.
- Join the others in your group in one shipment, as one collection from one hotel costs less than several visits.
- If you are close to 15 cubic metres, compare the price of a container of your own with the part-load price.
- Hand the shipment over two weeks before the season or after it, not at its peak.
The items are explained on the pricing factors page.
What is different about shipping from Makkah?
Loading in Makkah involves calculations a coastal city does not know. Every international shipment leaves it by truck first, because the nearest port and airport are in Jeddah. Large trucks enter it in hours regulated by the authorities, and those hours narrow in Ramadan and Hajj. Many districts are built on the mountainsides, where a container cannot climb. And a large share of its shipments leave from hotels rather than homes:
| What you find in Makkah | What follows from it | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| The port and airport are in Jeddah | A road leg before the sea or the air | Our truck moves the shipment on the day it is collected, and you carry nothing |
| Set hours for trucks | Loading has a time window | We book inside the window and confirm the hours in force the day before |
| Hillside districts | The container stops at the bottom of the street | A small vehicle brings the items down to it or to the warehouse |
| Hotel shipments | No room to pack in the bedroom | We collect from reception, then pack and weigh in front of the owner |
| Ramadan and Hajj | Crowds and tighter restrictions | Booking before the season, or storage until it is over |
If the container cannot be parked at your house, we load the furniture into a closed truck and stow it in the container inside our warehouse, recording that with photographs and the seal number.
Shipping luggage and gifts from Mecca to Austria

This is the service most in demand on the route. A visitor buys more in Makkah’s markets than he expects, the airline charges a high rate for every excess kilogram, and group flights hold the suitcase weight to a strict limit. So he travels light and his luggage follows him to his home in Vienna, Graz or Wels. Our agent comes to the hotel or the house and sets the scale in front of you, so you see the weight of every suitcase before it is written on the receipt.
Each piece is then packed: a suitcase is wrapped in film and strapped, and a carton is reinforced at its corners. A numbered tag goes on it carrying the recipient’s name, city and Austrian phone number. The tag number is the same number written on your receipt, and it is the one checked at delivery. Each kind of gift from Makkah has its own rule:
| The item | Can it be shipped? | A note for Austria |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | Yes, in sealed factory boxes | In a personal quantity, and no plant health certificate is asked for, according to the published rules |
| Prayer rugs, prayer beads and copies of the Quran | Yes | Listed by number and value on the inventory |
| Abayas, fabrics and ihram garments | Yes | A large quantity is treated as commercial goods |
| Perfumes, oud oil and incense | Within limits | Restricted by air, and an exempt gift includes no more than 50 grams of perfume |
| Zamzam water | No | Its export is restricted, and what is allowed is the traveller’s pack he carries himself |
| Meat, dairy and their products | No | Products of animal origin do not enter the European Union in personal parcels |
The rule for gifts in Austria is simple: a gift from one individual to another is exempt up to a value of 45 euros under the current rules, and import VAT is collected on anything above that. So anyone carrying gifts for several relatives writes each one a parcel in his own name and address, rather than gathering them in one carton of high value. Hand-over comes at least two days before you leave Makkah. Packing methods are in the packing guide.
Shipping household furniture from Mecca to Austria
Anyone moving from Makkah to Austria with a family ships the home in a container of their own, starting from SAR 11,000, and anyone taking one room or a few pieces needs only a part load, from SAR 5,500. Furniture here is handled at least three times before it settles: in Makkah, then at the rail siding, then in front of a building that may have no large lift. So we start by surveying the home to learn the volume of the furniture, and whether the container can stand at the door or at the bottom of the district.
- Dismantling in Makkah: wardrobes, beds and the dining table are taken apart here, with each piece’s screws in a bag carrying its number.
- Packing for sea and cold: blankets on wood, reinforced cardboard for glass and screens, and a barrier wrap that keeps out container moisture.
- The inventory: in English or German, piece by piece, because the Austrian customs officer checks it against the relief application.
- Stowing: weight goes low, and everything is strapped to the lashing points of the container so that a braking train cannot push it forward.
- Delivery: unloading and carrying into the rooms, assembling what was dismantled, and taking away the empty cartons.
Three things are worked out before choosing what to ship. Electricity in Austria is 230 volts at 50 hertz with a round European socket, so appliances with motors designed for another frequency may not run as they should. Flats are smaller than Makkah’s houses, so a long Arabic majlis may not find a wall. And the stairs in older buildings are narrow, so measure them first. More on the furniture shipping page.
A container of your own or a sea part load: which costs less from Makkah?
The economical choice is decided by volume, not preference. With a part load, your cartons are taken from Makkah to the consolidation warehouse in Jeddah, share one container with other people’s and you pay only for your cubic metres. With a container of your own, a 20ft or 40ft unit is booked for you, sealed once and kept closed all the way to Austria.
| Compared on | A container of your own | A part load |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of the charge | The price of the whole container | The cubic metres you take up |
| Price starts from | SAR 11,000 | SAR 5,500 |
| Time from Makkah | 25–40 days | 30–45 days |
| Handling | Sealed and not opened until clearance | Consolidated in Jeddah and sorted in a European warehouse |
| Suits | A whole home or goods in bulk | Cartons, suitcases and a few pieces of furniture |
A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, which is the furniture of a flat with two or three bedrooms. A 40ft container holds about 58 cubic metres, so it carries a large home, or furniture and a car together. The break-even point between the two prices lies between 12 and 15 cubic metres. All the sizes are on the container sizes page.
Shipping parcels and documents from Mecca to Austria
A parcel sent by a Makkah resident to a relative or friend in Austria travels by air door to door, and documents start from SAR 83. We collect it from your home, so you do not take it to Jeddah. Austrian customs apply the European Union’s rules to the parcel: import VAT is collected on anything that is not an exempt gift, and customs duty begins once the value is above 150 euros.
- Documents: certificates, powers of attorney and contracts go in a sealed rigid envelope, and the recipient signs on delivery.
- The declaration: the name, number and value of each item in English. A general description holds the parcel up.
- The Austrian address: the street name and house number, then the staircase and door numbers if there are any, then the four-digit postcode and the name of the city.
- The name on the bell: the delivery driver looks for the name written on the doorbell, so write it as it appears there.
- Medicines: sending them to individuals is heavily restricted, so do not put any in a parcel without asking us first.
The service in detail is on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods from Mecca to Austria
The goods from Makkah that are in demand in Austria are well known: dates, prayer rugs, prayer beads, ihram garments and abayas, incense and oriental perfumes. They are bought by the owners of shops serving the Muslim community in Vienna, Graz, Wels and Linz. When they enter Austria they enter the European Union’s market, so they are checked against its standards. The importer needs a European customs registration number, known as an EORI number, and duty is calculated on the goods’ tariff heading, followed by import VAT of 20%.
- Dates and foodstuffs: a label in German giving the ingredients, weight, shelf life and the importer’s name.
- Perfumes and incense: cosmetics need registering with a responsible person inside the Union, and flammable liquids go by sea under their classification.
- Textiles: a fibre composition label and the country of origin on each piece.
- Pallets and wooden crates: heat-treated and stamped with the international wood-packaging mark.
- Papers: invoice, packing list, origin certificate and bill of lading have to tell one story, with the same description and the same quantity on all four.
We advise an air sample before the first container, so the buyer sees the label and the packaging before the quantity is shipped. The explanation is on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Mecca to Austria
The car leaves Makkah carried, not driven: a car transporter collects it from your home and sets it down at Jeddah port, after its condition has been recorded in photographs and a report you sign. There are two ways from there. On a RoRo vessel it is driven onto the deck and secured by its wheels, at a rate starting from SAR 2,800 for a saloon to the European port. In a container it is lashed and sealed, and declared furniture may be shipped with it. After arrival it is carried on a transporter to your Austrian city, as it does not go on the road before it is cleared and registered.
The sea rate is the least of the calculation. What decides whether to ship is what Austria asks of a car arriving from outside the European Union. These are the items as published, and we confirm those in force before shipping:
| The item | What it means for a car coming from Makkah |
|---|---|
| Customs duty | 10% of the car’s value plus its freight to the Union’s border |
| Import VAT | 20%, calculated after the duty is added |
| Consumption tax at first registration | It follows the engine’s emissions and the car’s value, and weighs heavily on large engines |
| Transfer-of-residence relief | It lifts duty and import VAT from a car its owner used for six months before moving, and does not lift the consumption tax |
| Conformity | Gulf specifications come without a European certificate of conformity, so the car is tested individually and may be modified |
| Papers from the Kingdom | The vehicle registration card, proof that you own it, the export certificate issued once the plates are handed in, and your ID |
That is why we ask for the car’s make, year of manufacture and engine size before any booking, and put in front of you the total you will pay there. If the total comes close to the car’s price, selling it in Makkah is the sounder choice. The two shipping methods are on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages, and the general rules in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Austrian customs and transfer-of-residence relief
Austria is a member of the European Union, so its customs tariff is the Union’s tariff, and its import VAT is 20%. The widest relief is the one for a person transferring their normal place of residence to Austria, and its conditions, as published by the Austrian Ministry of Finance, are:
| The condition | What is required |
|---|---|
| Length of residence outside the Union | At least 12 continuous months before the move |
| Ownership and use of the items | At least six months in the previous country of residence |
| When the shipment enters | Within 12 months of settling in Austria |
| After release | No selling, hiring out or lending for 12 months |
| What it covers | Household furniture, appliances and furnishings, the private car and the family’s household supplies |
| What it leaves out | Tobacco, alcoholic drinks, commercial vehicles and new goods in their boxes |
| What proves it | The relief application, confirmation of residence registration, proof of previous residence in the Kingdom, and the inventory |
A student arriving to study has a similar treatment covering his study essentials and the used furniture of his room, on conditions we confirm before shipping. For a visitor going back to his home in Austria, what he bought new in Makkah falls under the limits for gifts and purchases. The safest order for anyone moving is to travel first and register the address while the container is at sea, so that it arrives with the paper ready.
Documents required for shipping from Mecca to Austria
The file is reviewed in Makkah before the truck sets off for Jeddah. A mistake in a name or a value is put right here with a phone call, and put right at the Austrian terminal with an amended declaration and days of waiting on which storage is charged. What is required differs with what you ship and your status there:
| The shipment | The papers | Note |
|---|---|---|
| A visitor’s luggage and gifts | A copy of the passport, an inventory with values, and the recipient’s address and phone | One parcel for each recipient, in their name |
| Furniture of someone moving to live | Passport and residence permit, confirmation of residence registration, the relief application and a numbered inventory | No new items inside the inventory |
| A student’s belongings | Passport, the letter of admission or enrolment, the address of the accommodation and an inventory | Described as used personal effects |
| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and the importer’s EORI number | Extra certificates depending on the item |
| A car | The registration card, proof of ownership, the export certificate and the owner’s ID | The relief application is attached if there is one |
The recipient settles Austria’s duties and taxes on the spot, and hears a rough figure from us before anything leaves Makkah. See shipping documents for the papers and customs clearance for how the procedure runs.
What cannot be shipped from Mecca to Austria, or needs a permit
Prohibitions on this route come from two sides: what the Kingdom does not let out, and what the European Union does not let in. Visitors most often slip up on three things: Zamzam water, food of animal origin, and medicines. Whatever is not written on the inventory does not go in the carton.
| The item | The rule |
|---|---|
| Zamzam water | Not shipped, and its export from the Kingdom is restricted |
| Narcotics and psychotropic substances | Strictly prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and fireworks | Prohibited except under special licences |
| Meat, dairy and their products | Prohibited in parcels and personal luggage |
| Medicines | Heavily restricted when sent to individuals |
| Counterfeit goods | Confiscated, and the recipient may be fined |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a plant health certificate |
| Perfumes, batteries and pressurised containers | Limited by air, and moved to sea when necessary |
| Tobacco and alcoholic drinks | We do not ship them |
The full list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering Mecca shipments in Vienna, Graz and Wels

Three cities receive most of what leaves Makkah for Austria. Vienna is the capital, with the largest concentration of Muslims, Arab students and embassies. Graz is the capital of Styria in the south, a university city and the nearest of the large cities to the Adriatic ports. Wels, in Upper Austria, is a city of trade and industry with a main rail container terminal, and from it we serve its suburbs and nearby Linz. Delivery does not end at the terminal: after clearance the truck goes out to the recipient’s door.
| City | State | How the shipment reaches it | What is sent to it from Makkah |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Vienna | By air to its airport, and by sea to the Freudenau terminal | Visitors’ luggage, gifts and the furniture of people moving |
| Graz | Styria | A train from Koper or Trieste, or a truck from Vienna airport | Students’ cartons, gifts and goods for shops |
| Wels and its suburbs | Upper Austria | A train from the northern ports to the Wels terminal | Family luggage, dates and goods for shops |
| Linz | Upper Austria | From the Enns and Wels terminals | Employees’ furniture and commercial goods |
| Salzburg | Salzburg | A truck from Wels or from Vienna airport | Holidaymakers’ suitcases |
| Innsbruck | Tyrol | A truck along the western motorway | Students’ belongings and air parcels |
| Klagenfurt and Villach | Carinthia | A train from the Adriatic ports | Furniture and luggage |
Delivery in Austrian cities is arranged by appointment. The driver phones the recipient the day before and a time is agreed. In Vienna’s busy districts a temporary parking space for the truck is reserved in front of the building days ahead. A correct Austrian phone number is the most important line of the address. The other European destinations are in the article on the shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Europe.
Home Safe services for individuals, companies, government bodies and embassies
We serve four groups on this route, and each asks something different of the same shipment. An individual asks about the price and the door. A company asks about the date and the frequency. A government body asks about the documented procedure. An embassy or consulate asks about confidentiality and the official form.
| The group | What we provide | What we get right for them |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals, visitors and students | Luggage, gifts, furniture and a car, with dismantling, packing, clearance and delivery to the door | The recipient’s status, the gift limit and transfer-of-residence relief |
| Companies and traders | Regular shipments, consolidation of purchases, interim storage and complete commercial papers | A fixed schedule, a status report and a price reviewed at set dates |
| Government bodies | Official documents, printed matter, and equipment for delegations and exhibitions | Secure packing, a date that fits official working hours and a report that can be filed administratively |
| Embassies and consulates | Documents, office furniture and materials for official occasions | The exemption request goes through diplomatic channels, and we prepare the inventory and bill of lading in the required form |
Hajj and Umrah operators and travel offices in Makkah deal with us the way companies do: an agreement for the whole season, a fixed collection time from the hotel after each group, and a list of the luggage owners’ names and tag numbers. Everything about the services is on the our services page.
Air freight from Mecca to Austria

Air is the fast route for urgent luggage and gifts, and it starts from SAR 23 a kilogram. Because Makkah has no airport, the shipment leaves through King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. We collect it from your home or hotel, and it reaches the airport’s cargo village the same day. There are direct flights between Jeddah and Vienna, depending on the current timetable, which cover the distance in about five hours, and when their timing does not suit, the shipment travels with one stop. Door to door takes 3 to 7 days.
The shipment lands at Vienna International Airport, the gateway for air cargo into Austria. The import declaration is lodged there, and the distribution truck then goes out to Vienna the same day, and to Graz, Wels, Linz and Salzburg usually the next day.
- Chargeable weight: the airline bills whichever is higher, the reading on the scale or the weight derived from the box’s dimensions. Check yours on the volumetric weight calculator.
- What it suits: visitors’ suitcases, gift cartons, documents, traders’ samples and the belongings of someone travelling for treatment.
- What is restricted: perfumes, oud oil, loose lithium batteries and pressurised containers.
- Timing: if you hand your luggage over two days before you fly, you find it at home a few days after you arrive.
Read more under air freight; the office we run beside the airport is described in the air freight office in Jeddah article.
Collection from Makkah’s districts and the surrounding area
Our team reaches every district of Makkah: Aziziyah, Shawqiyah, Sharai, Awali, Naseem, Zahir, Rusaifah, Utaibiyah, Zaidi, Kudai and Batha Quraysh. We collect from the hotels of the central area and from pilgrims’ accommodation. The nearby towns are added to the same Makkah run bound for Jeddah, so no separate route is charged for them:
| Place of collection | Distance from Makkah | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels around the Haram and in Aziziyah | Inside the city | From reception, with a receipt and weighing in front of the luggage owner |
| Hillside districts and alleys | Inside the city | A small vehicle carries the items to the truck on the wide street |
| Al-Jumum and Bahrah | 20–40 km | On the same day as the Makkah collection |
| Taif | About 90 km | A day before loading day |
Anyone who leaves Makkah before their address in Austria is ready does not have to ship at once. Their belongings stay in our warehouse, inventoried and numbered, and are shipped when they send us the address and the confirmation of residence registration. Details are on the storage page.
Steps for shipping from Mecca to Austria
- Contact: you send photographs of what you are shipping, the name of your district or hotel in Makkah, and the recipient’s city in Austria.
- The plan: we suggest sea, air or a split between them, and name the European port and the arrival terminal.
- The price: it reaches you itemised in its four lines, and you know where each line ends.
- The appointment: we book a day and time that fit the hours when trucks may enter Makkah.
- Collection: weighing, packing, numbered tags and a receipt of which you keep a copy.
- Jeddah: the export declaration, then the port or the airport’s cargo village.
- The journey: a tracking number, and an update at the European port and on entry into Austria.
- Delivery: Austrian clearance, then a truck to the door and a check against the inventory.
Tracking and insurance from Mecca to Austria
The shipment changes hands four times between Makkah and Vienna, so we write down for you the points at which a message will reach you: departure from Makkah, the container being lifted onto the ship in Jeddah, its discharge at the European port, its arrival at the Austrian terminal, and the release. In between, you follow the ship by the container number, or the aircraft by the air waybill number.
- The numbered tag: the number on each suitcase and carton is how it is checked at the door, so keep a photograph of the receipt.
- Beyond the port: the shipping line’s tracking ends at the quay, and news of the train and the terminal comes from us. The explanation is on the track your shipment page.
- Insurance: optional, at a percentage of the value you declare, and it covers the journey across all its modes when it is taken door to door. Its terms are on the cargo insurance page.
- At delivery: have the driver wait while you open and check, and put anything wrong in writing on the delivery slip ahead of signing.
Shipping from Austria to Mecca
The route works in both directions. An Umrah or Hajj pilgrim coming from Austria sometimes sends his luggage ahead so that it is waiting for him in Makkah. A student from Makkah on his way home ships his books and belongings. Our agent collects from the Austrian address, and the shipment travels by sea to Jeddah port or by air to its airport, after which we move it to Makkah and deliver it in the permitted hours. With anyone returning with used personal effects we review the exemption conditions that apply in the Kingdom, and whatever is new or commercial pays duty according to its type.
Home Safe tips before shipping from Mecca to Austria
- Choose the method by when you need the shipment: air for what you want within a week, sea for what can wait a month.
- Hand your luggage over two days before you leave Makkah, and do not put it off to the night before you travel.
- Write the inventory item by item at its real value, as it is the basis for customs and for insurance.
- Do not put Zamzam water, food of animal origin or medicine in any carton.
- If you are moving to live there, register your address first and then ask for clearance, not the other way round.
- Ask where the quoted figure ends before you compare it with another.
How do you choose a shipping company from Mecca to Austria?
Ask the company two questions before the price: how will my shipment leave Makkah, and where will it be unloaded in Austria? Whoever answers both in detail knows the route from both ends. These signs help you compare:
| The question | What reassures you | What should alert you |
|---|---|---|
| Who are you? | A commercial registration and a known address | A mobile number with no business name |
| Where does the price end? | They name the point: the port, the terminal or the door | A single figure “to Austria” |
| How do you collect from Makkah? | They ask about the district and the truck hours | They promise any hour on any day |
| Can Zamzam be shipped? | They refuse clearly | They accept whatever they are given |
| What do I receive? | A receipt with the weight of each piece and its tag number | A receipt for an amount only |
Common mistakes when shipping from Mecca to Austria
- Handing over luggage on the day of travel in a busy season, when the agent has no time to weigh and pack.
- Putting several relatives’ gifts in one carton whose value goes over the exemption limit.
- Hiding a pack of Zamzam among the clothes, which stops the whole shipment in Jeddah.
- Sending heavy dates by air and then being surprised by the invoice.
- Writing an Austrian address with no door number or no local phone.
- Taking the price to the European port for the price of reaching Vienna.
- Surrendering the car’s plates before working out what Austria asks in taxes and conformity.
Why choose Home Safe for international shipping from Mecca to Austria?
Because this route begins in a city with its own seasons and restrictions and ends in a country the sea does not reach. We arrange both ends: a collection that respects Makkah’s hours, a European route named by its port and terminal, and a customs file reviewed before loading.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Mecca to Austria
How much does shipping from Mecca to Austria cost?
The least you can pay on this route is SAR 83, for an urgent envelope of documents. A suitcase or carton by air starts from SAR 23 a kilogram. By sea, a part load starts from SAR 5,500, a saloon car on a RoRo vessel from SAR 2,800 to the European port, and a container of your own from SAR 11,000. Transport from Makkah to Jeddah and delivery inside Austria are worked out once we know the volume and the address. For a price: 0552803439.
How long does a shipment take from Mecca to Austria?
By air, 3 to 7 days from the sender’s door in Makkah to the recipient’s door, customs release at Vienna airport included. By sea, 25 to 40 days for a container of your own, 30 to 45 days for a part load, and 28 to 42 days for a car on a RoRo vessel.
How is my shipment sent when Makkah has no port and Austria has no coast?
By three modes in a row, run by a single party. A truck takes it from Makkah to Jeddah Islamic Port, about 80 km away. A ship then carries it to a European port on the Adriatic or the North Sea. After that a container train or a truck brings it onto Austrian soil, to a terminal near the recipient.
Does the container really travel on the Danube?
It usually reaches the river rather than sailing on it. Vienna, Linz, Enns and Krems all stand on the Danube, and their river ports are container terminals that receive trains from the seaports. The river barges themselves mostly carry bulk cargo, and moving a container on one is arranged in a limited number of cases, when a service is available.
Do you collect pilgrims’ luggage from hotels in Makkah?
Yes. Our agent comes to the hotel reception at the agreed time, weighs every suitcase and carton in front of its owner, sticks on a numbered tag and hands over a receipt showing the count and the weight. It is best to hand the luggage over two days before you leave Makkah.
Can Zamzam water be shipped from Mecca to Austria?
No. The export of Zamzam water is restricted, so we do not accept it in a suitcase, a gift carton or a container. What a traveller is allowed is the dedicated pack he carries on his own flight, as far as the airline permits.
Can dates and perfumes be sent as gifts to Austria?
Dates are sent in sealed factory boxes and in a personal quantity, and they are among the few fruits for which the European Union does not ask for a plant health certificate, according to the published rules. Perfumes and oud oil are flammable liquids, so the quantity allowed by air is limited, and an exempt gift may not include more than 50 grams of perfume.
Is tax charged on a gift sent from Mecca to Austria?
An occasional gift from one person to another is exempt if its value is not above 45 euros, under the rules Austrian customs currently apply. Above that, import VAT is collected, and customs duty is added once the value passes 150 euros. So it is sensible to split what you send to several relatives into parcels in their own names, and to write the value as it is.
What is the cheapest way to ship from Mecca to Austria?
A sea part load, for anything its owner is not in a hurry for: you pay for the cubic metres your cartons take up inside a container you share with others. Once a shipment reaches 12 to 15 cubic metres, a container of your own becomes both cheaper and faster. Air is cheaper than sea only for a small, light parcel.
Do I pay customs on my used furniture when moving from Mecca to Austria?
You do not, if you are transferring your normal place of residence and meet the conditions of the European relief: at least one continuous year outside the Union, furniture owned and used for six months, and the shipment entering within a year of your settling. Anyone the conditions do not cover pays duty and import VAT of 20%. We confirm the rules in force before shipping.
Do you ship cars from Mecca to Austria?
Yes. A car transporter takes it from your home in Makkah to Jeddah port, and it then sails on a RoRo vessel at a rate starting from SAR 2,800 for a saloon, or inside a container. It is unloaded at a European port and carried on a transporter to your city in Austria. More important than the sea rate is what is paid after arrival in duty, taxes and conformity testing, and we work that out with you before you decide.
Which Austrian cities do you deliver Mecca shipments to?
To all nine federal states. Most of what we deliver goes to Vienna, then Graz in the south, then Wels and Linz in Upper Austria, then Salzburg, Innsbruck and Klagenfurt. Delivery is to the door of the flat or the shop, not to the rail terminal, and it includes carrying in and assembly for anyone who asks.
Is there land freight from Mecca to Austria?
We do not work with it. The road route crosses a number of countries whose transit procedures are not stable, so we could not give you a date on it that we would stand by. The two alternatives are clear: sea for what is large or heavy, and air for what is urgent.
Is shipping from Mecca affected by Ramadan and the Hajj season?
Only the first leg is. In the last ten nights and on the days of Hajj, the hours in which trucks may enter Makkah narrow and the area around the Haram is crowded, so collection needs an earlier booking. The ship and the European train keep to their timetable. The answer is to book two weeks before the season, or we hold your shipment in the warehouse until it is over.
Do you ship from Austria to Mecca?
Yes. Our agent collects the shipment from the address in Vienna, Graz, Wels or elsewhere, and it travels by rail to the European port and then by sea to Jeddah, or by air from Vienna airport. After release in Jeddah it continues by truck to Makkah and is delivered in the hours when trucks are allowed in.
