Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Austria, and what do they ship?

Five groups recur on this route, and each has its own shipping method and customs treatment. The student at the universities of Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck sends cartons of books and winter clothes. The employee moving to an international organisation or a company there moves a whole home. The family spending the summer in Zell am See and Salzburg sends suitcases ahead. The trader supplies dates and goods. And the car owner asks about shipping it before asking about anything else.

Shipper What they ship Best method What matters first
Student or scholarship holder Cartons, suitcases and books Shared container by sea, or air by the kilogram Arrival before term begins
Employee moving residence Home furniture, appliances and the car A 20ft or 40ft container The transfer-of-residence relief
Summer visitor or long-stay traveller Extra suitcases and children’s things Air, door to door That the suitcases arrive first
Companion of a patient on a treatment trip Personal belongings and items for the stay Air, or cartons by sea for a long stay Delivery to the temporary address
Trader and exporter Dates, perfumes, food and industrial products Full container or part load, with samples by air Compliance with European standards
Embassy, company or government body Office furniture, printed matter and exhibition equipment Sea for volume, air for the urgent The date and confidentiality

We begin with two questions: what is your status in Austria, and what is the delivery address? The customs treatment is built on the first, and the European port is chosen from the second. Anyone who knows both answers before packing saves money and days.

How does a shipment reach a country with no coast? Route and transit time

A sea shipment to Austria covers three legs, not one: sea, then a port in another country, then rail or truck across the border. The vessel leaves Jeddah northwards up the Red Sea, passes through the Suez Canal, then heads into the Adriatic or carries on to the North Sea. The harbours nearest to Austrian territory are Koper in Slovenia and Trieste in Italy. From the quay the container is loaded onto a container train that enters Austria within hours.

Because Austria, Slovenia, Italy and Germany are all members of the European Union, the container crosses the borders between them under the customs transit procedure without being opened, and clearance takes place at the Austrian customs office near the consignee or at the port of entry, whichever suits the file. These are the stages of a full container leaving Jeddah:

Stage What happens Usual time
Collection and packing Dismantling, wrapping and numbering at your address One day
Transport to Jeddah port A closed truck, or a container loaded at your door Hours from the western cities, one to two days from the central and eastern regions
Export and waiting for the vessel Export declaration, then loading on the ship 2–4 days
Sailing Red Sea, Suez, then the Mediterranean, with transhipment on some services 12–20 days
The European port Discharge of the container and transfer to rail or truck 2–4 days
Transit into Austria Container train to an inland terminal, or a direct truck One to 3 days
Austrian clearance Import declaration, and relief or payment One to 3 days with a complete file
Delivery From the inland terminal to the consignee’s door One to two days

The choice between methods is governed by the size of what you ship and when you need it. These times are counted from the sender’s door to the consignee’s door:

Method Route Approximate time Best for
Full container Jeddah → an Adriatic port → rail into Austria 25–40 days A whole home, furniture with a car, or wholesale cargo
Shared container Consolidated in Jeddah and sorted in a European warehouse 30–45 days Students’ cartons, and a room or two
Car by RoRo Car carrier to a European port, then a transporter into Austria 28–42 days Running cars
Air A Saudi airport → Vienna airport → the consignee’s address 3–7 days Suitcases, parcels, documents and samples

What lengthens the time?

  • Transhipment: many services to the Adriatic change vessel at a hub port in the Mediterranean, and every change adds days.
  • Waiting for consolidation: a shared container stays in the warehouse until its load is complete.
  • The train date: container trains run to a timetable, and a container that misses one waits for the next.
  • Registering the address: the transfer relief cannot be requested before the consignee has a registered address in Austria.
  • European holidays: customs and warehouses close on public holidays and at weekends.
  • Winter in the mountains: snow delays trucks on the mountain roads towards Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

Times to other countries are on the transit times page, and the comparison between methods is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Austria

The price to Austria is the sum of four items: transport inside the Kingdom to Jeddah port or the airport, then the sea or air freight, then transport from the European port to the Austrian city, then the delivery services if you ask for them. The third item is what sets this route apart from a country with a coast, so we write it out for you plainly and do not hide it inside a single figure. These are the prices our services start from:

What you ship Method Price starts from
Saloon car RoRo as far as the European port SAR 2,800
Furniture and belongings Part load in a shared container SAR 5,500
Whole-home furniture Full container SAR 11,000
Parcels, suitcases and samples Air to Vienna airport SAR 23 a kilogram
Documents Express SAR 83
Students’ cartons By the carton in a shared container Set on request by the number and size of cartons
Moving the car from the port into Austria Car transporter Set on request by city
Heavy equipment and out-of-gauge loads Flat-rack container or RoRo Set on request by dimensions and weight

The prices circulating in the market on the Austria route are mostly higher than that. Air freight is offered at between SAR 22 and 35 a kilogram. Part-load sea freight at between SAR 4,500 and 7,500 a shipment, or between SAR 300 and 700 a cubic metre. A full container at between SAR 12,000 and 18,000, with a 40ft container reaching SAR 25,000 in some offers. And sea freight for a car including the European haulage at between SAR 6,500 and 10,000. The gap between one offer and another usually comes from what it covers: does it end at the European port or at the front door in Austria? Because container freight moves with the market, we fix your price on the day you book. The explanation is in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.

What sets the price Its effect on the Austria route
Method Shared for the small, a full container for the large, and air the highest per kilogram
Volume or weight By the cubic metre at sea, and by chargeable weight in the air. Work it out with the CBM calculator
The European port A port close to the consignee’s city shortens the European inland haul, the costliest item of the journey per kilometre
The Austrian city Graz and Vienna are nearer the Adriatic, while Innsbruck and Bregenz are farther and their roads are mountainous
The collection city in the Kingdom The western cities are close to Jeddah port, while Riyadh and Dammam add a long road haul
Delivery into the building The floor, the lift, and the parking permit for the truck at the entrance
Season Summer, the start of the academic year and the year-end holidays are peak periods

How do you bring the cost down?

  • Send the heavy and the bulky by sea, and leave for the air only what you need in your first week.
  • If your shipment is close to 15 cubic metres, ask for the price of a 20ft container and compare it with the part-load price.
  • Give us the delivery address from the first call so we can choose the port nearest to it.
  • Prepare the transfer-relief papers before the container arrives, since port storage is charged by the day.
  • Do not ship new appliances in their boxes among personal belongings; they fall outside the relief and tax is charged on them.
  • Measure large wardrobes against the staircase of the Austrian building before shipping them.

The pricing items are explained on the pricing factors page.

Shipping to Austria from the cities of the Kingdom

We collect from every Saudi city, and the route is the same at its end and different at its start. A sea shipment heads for Jeddah Islamic Port because it lies on the Red Sea, and a vessel from it enters the Suez Canal directly. An air shipment leaves from the nearest international airport. So the western cities reach the quay in hours, while the central, northern and southern cities travel a day or two by road. Here is a summary of each city:

Collection city Port used Distance to it Air freight airport City page
Jeddah Jeddah Islamic Port Inside the city King Abdulaziz International International shipping companies in Jeddah
Makkah Jeddah port About 80 km Jeddah airport, as Makkah has none Served from Jeddah
Taif Jeddah port About 170 km Jeddah airport Served from Jeddah
Madinah Jeddah port, or Yanbu when a sailing is available About 420 km to Jeddah, and 220 km to Yanbu Madinah airport or via Jeddah Served with the western runs
Riyadh Jeddah port, or the dry port and then Dammam About 950 km to Jeddah King Khalid International International shipping company in Riyadh
Dammam, Khobar and Jubail Jeddah port by road, or King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam About 1,350 km to Jeddah King Fahd International International shipping company in Dammam
Qassim: Buraidah and Unaizah Jeddah port About 900 km Via Riyadh airport Served with the Riyadh runs
Tabuk Jeddah port About 1,000 km Via Jeddah airport By closed truck to Jeddah
Abha, Khamis Mushait and Jazan Jeddah port About 700 km from Abha Via Jeddah airport By closed truck to Jeddah

A shipment from the Eastern Province has two options. The first is to be carried by road to Jeddah and so join the shorter service. The second is to sail from Dammam port, which lies on the Arabian Gulf, so the vessel rounds the Arabian Peninsula before it reaches the Red Sea and the voyage grows by about a week. We choose between them with a simple sum: is the truck fare to Jeddah less than what the extra days are worth to you? A Riyadh container can also be cleared at the dry port and travel by freight train to Dammam when that suits it.

The base price is the same because the sea and air freight do not change with your city. What changes is the item for inland transport to the port:

Collection city Saloon car by sea Furniture as a part load Air per kilogram Inland transport to the port
Jeddah, Makkah and Taif Starts from SAR 2,800 Starts from SAR 5,500 Starts from SAR 23 A short distance, and the smallest item
Madinah and Yanbu Starts from SAR 2,800 Starts from SAR 5,500 Starts from SAR 23 Set on request by the load
Riyadh and Qassim Starts from SAR 2,800 Starts from SAR 5,500 Starts from SAR 23 from Riyadh airport Set on request; the distance is about 950 km
Dammam, Khobar and Jubail Starts from SAR 2,800 Starts from SAR 5,500 Starts from SAR 23 from Dammam airport Set on request, or a sailing from Dammam
Tabuk, Abha and Khamis Mushait Starts from SAR 2,800 Starts from SAR 5,500 Starts from SAR 23 via Jeddah airport Set on request by distance

The cities we collect from are listed on the cities page, and the ports we work from on the ports and gateways page.

Sea freight from Saudi Arabia to Austria: a full container or a shared one?

Sea freight from Saudi Arabia to Austria

Sea freight is the economical route for anything beyond a few cartons, and it is offered in two systems. With a full container you book a 20ft or 40ft container for yourself alone, so it is sealed at your home and stays sealed on the vessel and the train until it is opened at your home in Austria. With a shared container you pay only for the cubic metres your shipment takes up, and it is consolidated with other people’s shipments in Jeddah, then sorted in a European warehouse before distribution.

Comparison Full container Shared container
You pay for The whole container, however much of it you fill The volume of your shipment in cubic metres
Door-to-door time 25–40 days 30–45 days
Number of handlings Not opened on the way Loaded and unloaded in at least two warehouses
The route after the port Container train to an Austrian terminal, then a truck A distribution truck from the European warehouse
Best for A whole home, furniture with a car, or a trader’s cargo A student’s cartons, a bedroom, or a small order
Price starts from SAR 11,000 SAR 5,500

A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, which is the furniture of a two- to three-room flat. A 40ft container holds about 58 cubic metres, enough for a whole home or for furniture with a car alongside. The point at which the two prices converge lies between 12 and 15 cubic metres, and for anyone who reaches it a dedicated container keeps the goods safer and is faster. Sizes are on the container sizes page, and the service is on the sea freight page.

Which European port suits your city in Austria?

The port is chosen from the consignee’s address. Austria sits in the middle of the continent, so containers reach it from the south through the Adriatic and from the north through the North Sea. The Slovenian port of Koper ranks first in serving Austrian trade, most of its Austria-bound cargo travels by rail, and it has regular container trains to Graz, Villach and Enns. The Italian port of Trieste is its neighbour and its alternative. The northern ports are a longer sail, but their trains to Linz, Salzburg and Vienna are many.

Port Country Approximate distance to Austria Serves in particular
Koper Slovenia About 270 km to Graz, and 480 km to Vienna Graz, Klagenfurt, Villach and Vienna
Trieste Italy Close to Koper, with similar distances Carinthia, Styria and Salzburg
Hamburg Germany About 1,000 km to Vienna Linz, Vienna and Salzburg by rail
Bremerhaven Germany A distance close to Hamburg’s Cars arriving on RoRo vessels
Rotterdam Netherlands A little farther than Hamburg Shared containers sorted in its warehouses

The working rule: whatever lies south and east of the Alps is closer to the Adriatic ports, and whatever lies in the Danube basin to the north may be served by a German port at the same cost and an earlier date. We work out both options for you when they are close, then write the name of the port into the booking.

Shipping household furniture to Austria with packing that protects every piece

A whole home of furniture is shipped in a dedicated container starting from SAR 11,000, and a few pieces in a shared container starting from SAR 5,500. Furniture on this route goes through what a short move never involves: weeks inside a closed container, then a crane, then a train, then a building whose staircase may be narrow. So the work starts at your home in the Kingdom with an arrangement that allows for the last metre of the journey.

  • Survey: by photos or a visit, so we can work out the cubic metres and know what is dismantled and what ships as it is.
  • Dismantling: whatever will not pass a narrow Austrian staircase comes apart here: the wardrobe, the bed and the dining table. Each piece travels with its own bag of screws, numbered to match it.
  • Wrapping: blankets for wood, foam and reinforced cardboard for glass and screens, and moisture-barrier plastic over everything.
  • Numbering: a number on every piece and carton, and a list in English fit for Austrian customs.
  • Loading: stowage that spreads the weight and ties the pieces with straps to the container’s lashing rings.
  • In Austria: unloading and carrying into the rooms, reassembly of what was dismantled, and removal of the packing waste.

Before deciding what to ship, know three things about the Austrian home. Electricity is 230 volts at 50 hertz with the round European socket, so appliances from the Kingdom need a plug adaptor, and some motor-driven appliances are affected by the difference in frequency. Many of Vienna’s old buildings have no lift large enough for furniture. And flats are smaller than you are used to, so a large majlis set may not fit. Details are on the furniture shipping page.

Moving office and commercial furniture with dismantling and assembly on site

An office moving to Vienna cannot afford to stop work for weeks, so we split its move into two consignments. The equipment and files the team needs immediately travel by air, and the desks, cabinets and meeting tables travel by sea far enough ahead to arrive on the same date. Companies opening a branch or taking part in a show at the Vienna exhibition centre often ask for this arrangement.

  • Inventory by department: each department has a label colour, so its furniture is unloaded straight into its room.
  • Technical dismantling: workstations, partitions and metal shelving are taken apart by a technician who knows their assembly system.
  • Equipment: servers, printers and screens go in padded cartons or wooden crates, with their serial numbers recorded.
  • Timing: loading outside working hours, and delivery on a day agreed with the building management.
  • Assembly: according to the layout of the new office, which you send us before shipping.
  • Report: a written update at each stage reaches the person in charge of the move at your company.

New office furniture is treated by customs as commercial goods, so it needs an invoice and a certificate of origin, and it is cleared in the name of the importing company and its European customs number.

Shipping travellers’ and students’ belongings to Austria

Shipping travellers’ and students’ belongings to Austria

The student and the traveller do not need a container, but a way to send cartons and suitcases for less than the airline’s excess-baggage rate. There are two ways: by the carton by sea in a shared container, or by the kilogram by air from SAR 23 a kilogram. The first is for books, winter clothes and kitchenware that can wait a month, and the second for what is needed in the first week. We collect from the home in the Kingdom and deliver to the residence.

  • What is usually shipped: clothes and coats, books and references, kitchen items, a prayer mat and a copy of the Quran, and coffee, cardamom and dates in personal quantities.
  • The carton: double-walled, and weighing no more than 25 to 30 kg so it can be carried up stairs.
  • Timing: sea cartons are sent five to six weeks before travel, so they arrive as term begins.
  • The address: the consignee’s name as written on the doorbell or letterbox, the room number in the student residence, and an Austrian mobile number if there is one.
  • Customs: European Union rules relieve the outfit of a student coming to study and the used furnishings of his room, on conditions, and we confirm what is in force and the documents required before shipping.
  • What is left out: medicines without a prescription, meat and dairy, and loose batteries in air freight.

A family travelling for the summer in the lake and mountain regions sends its suitcases, pushchair and baby items by air a few days before the trip, and finds them at the hotel or flat. We write the guest’s name and arrival date on the parcel exactly as in the booking, and notify reception in advance.

Shipping personal parcels and gifts to Austria

A parcel from one individual to another travels by air, door to door, and it is the fastest and simplest service on this route. Austrian customs apply European Union rules to every parcel arriving from outside it: an occasional gift between individuals is exempt if its value does not exceed 45 euros, according to the rule in force, while import tax is collected on everything else from the first euro, and customs duty is added when the value exceeds 150 euros.

  • Two options: express, arriving within a few days, and economy, a few days slower and lower in price.
  • The declaration: a description of each item, its quantity and its value in English; the word “gift” alone is not enough.
  • Packing a gift: a box inside a carton with padding, so that it arrives looking right and not merely intact.
  • Perfumes and oud oil: flammable liquids that have limits in air freight, and we tell you the quantity accepted.
  • Dates and sweets: in sealed factory boxes and in personal quantities.
  • Follow-up: a tracking number from collection to the consignee’s signature.

Details are on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping commercial goods from Saudi Arabia to Austria to European standards

Goods that enter Austria enter the whole European Union market, so they are checked at the first point of entry against the Union’s standards, not one country’s. The Austrian importer needs a European customs registration number known as an EORI number, and the goods are classified under their tariff heading, on which the duty and then the 20% import tax are calculated. We review the file before the goods leave the supplier’s warehouse.

Item Shipping method What it needs in Europe
Dates Dry or refrigerated container, with samples by air A label in German, an expiry date, and a phytosanitary certificate when requested
Processed food products Pallets in a container A list of ingredients and allergens in the country’s language
Perfumes and cosmetics Sea, or air under a dangerous-goods classification Registration of the product with a European responsible person, and a safety statement
Appliances, toys and electrical equipment Sea with shock-resistant packing The European CE conformity mark and a declaration of conformity
Textiles and abayas Cartons as a part load A fibre-composition label and the country of origin
Petrochemicals and plastics Regular full containers A safety data sheet and registration of the substance under its regulation
Exhibition equipment Air or sea according to the date Temporary admission under a temporary-admission carnet where it applies

Wooden pallets and crates must be heat-treated and stamped with the international wood-treatment mark, or they are turned back or repacked at the owner’s expense. Anyone whose goods are refused at the point of entry pays the outbound and return freight together, so an hour’s review before shipping is far cheaper. The service is explained on the commercial shipping page.

Heavy and light shipments: planning that lowers the cost and holds the date

Weight and volume settle the method before the price. A light, bulky shipment is charged in the air on its volume, not its weight, so the sea becomes cheaper for it. A heavy, small shipment, such as spare parts and engines, may be reasonable by air if a stoppage costs more than the difference in freight. Planning means setting three figures side by side: the actual weight, the volume, and what a day’s delay costs you.

  • Light: cartons of clothes and soft furnishings are compressed and shipped by the cubic metre in a shared container.
  • Medium: strapped pallets are loaded by forklift and combined with other shipments to share the freight.
  • Heavy: machines and generators on wooden bases, with the weight spread over the container floor and within the load limits of European roads.
  • Out of gauge: equipment that does not fit a standard container ships on a flat-rack container or a RoRo vessel, then on a special truck with a transit permit.
  • Combining shipments: purchases from more than one Saudi supplier are gathered in our warehouse and leave in a single container.
  • Choosing the date: we book the vessel whose arrival meets a train to Austria, so the container does not sit overnight in the port.

Heavy weights and equipment are explained on the heavy equipment shipping page.

Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Austria

A car is shipped by sea on a RoRo vessel or inside a container, and shipping a saloon starts from SAR 2,800 as far as the European port. On RoRo the car is driven onto the deck, secured by its wheels and driven off at Bremerhaven or an Adriatic port, and it must be running and empty of belongings. In a container it is lashed and sealed, and declared furniture may travel with it. It is then carried on a car transporter to your city in Austria, because it cannot go on the road before it is cleared and carries a plate.

But the freight is the smallest item in the sum. What has to be worked out before deciding is what Austria asks for after arrival, and these are its items as published by the Austrian authorities; we confirm what is in force before shipping:

Item Detail
Customs duty 10% on the value of the car plus the cost of delivering it to the European Union border
Import tax 20% on the value, freight and duty together
Consumption tax at registration Paid to the tax office at first licensing, calculated on the car’s emissions and value, and rising with large engines
Transfer-of-residence relief Covers the private car for duty and import tax if it was used for six months before the move, but does not cover the consumption tax
Individual approval A Gulf-specification car carries no European certificate of conformity, so it is tested individually and may need changes to lighting and exhaust
Periodic test and insurance A roadworthiness test and its sticker, and Austrian insurance before the plate is issued
Winter and motorways Winter tyres in wintry conditions, and the motorway toll sticker
Documents from the Kingdom The registration, the purchase invoice, the export certificate after the plates are surrendered, and the owner’s ID

In short, a European-built car with a moderate engine is easier to approve and lower in tax, while a large Gulf-specification car may cost several times its freight after arrival. Send us the make, the year and the engine size, and we will work through the items with you before its plates are surrendered. The methods are explained on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages, and the general conditions in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.

Austrian customs and the transfer-of-residence relief

Austria applies the common customs tariff of the European Union, and on top of it an import tax of 20%. So a commercial shipment pays duty according to its heading and then the tax. A person moving his normal residence to Austria, however, may bring in his belongings, furniture and private car free of duty and import tax, on conditions published by the Austrian Ministry of Finance:

Condition Detail
Previous residence At least 12 continuous months outside the European Union
Previous use The goods owned and used for at least six months in the country of previous residence
Entry window Within 12 months of the date of settling in Austria
No disposal Not sold, hired out, lent or pledged for 12 months after release
What it covers Home furniture, appliances and furnishings, bicycles, the private car, and household supplies in family quantities
What it does not cover Alcoholic drinks, tobacco, commercial vehicles, and non-portable tools of trade
Proof The relief application form, confirmation of registered residence in Austria, proof of previous residence in the Kingdom, the employment or tenancy contract, and the list of contents

The practical order settles half the matter. The residence registration is issued only once you actually live there, so it is best to travel first and register your address while the container is at sea, and it arrives with your papers ready. Anyone who reverses the order leaves the container at the terminal waiting for a paper while storage is charged on it. The conditions are reviewed and updated, so we confirm what is in force for you before shipping.

Required documents and customs clearance for shipments bound for Austria

Clearance begins in the Kingdom, not in Austria. We review the file before loading, because an error in describing an item or its value is corrected here in minutes, and corrected there with an amended declaration, fees and days. When the shipment arrives our agent lodges the electronic declaration with customs, attaches the relief application or pays what is due, then receives the release order and arranges delivery.

Type of shipment Documents Note
Furniture and belongings of a person moving residence Passport and residence permit, residence registration, relief application, numbered list of contents, and bill of lading The list in English or German, with no new items
A student’s belongings Passport, university admission or enrolment, residence address, and list of contents Treated as used personal belongings
Commercial goods Four trade papers (invoice, packing list, origin certificate, bill of lading), all issued to match the Austrian importer’s EORI number, which is asked for first Conformity or health certificates according to the item
Car Registration, purchase invoice, export certificate, bill of lading, and insurance policy With the relief application if its owner is moving residence
Parcels and gifts Customs declaration of contents and value, and the consignee’s details An honest value cuts short any hold

Austrian duties and taxes are paid by the consignee there, and we give him an approximate figure before shipping so he knows what to expect. The papers are explained on the shipping documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Austria, or needs a permit

The restrictions on this route are mostly European, and some are stricter than a sender in the Kingdom expects. The best known are that meat and dairy do not enter the European Union in parcels and personal belongings, and that medicines are not sent by post to private individuals in Austria except within narrow limits. The rule is not to put in the carton anything you cannot write on the list.

Item Status
Narcotics and psychotropic substances Prohibited
Weapons, ammunition and fireworks Prohibited except under special licences
Counterfeit goods Confiscated and destroyed, and the consignee may be fined

Shipping destinations in Austria: the cities we deliver to

Delivery in Vienna, Graz and Salzburg

We deliver to all nine Austrian states, from Vienna in the east to Bregenz on Lake Constance in the west. Vienna receives the most shipments because it holds the major universities, the international organisations and the embassies. Graz and Linz are cities of universities and industry. Salzburg and Innsbruck are the destinations of summer visitors and students. Delivery includes unloading, carrying in and assembly when you ask for it.

City State Approximate distance from Vienna What is mostly shipped there
Vienna Vienna The capital Relocation furniture, students’ belongings and embassy shipments
Graz Styria About 200 km University students’ belongings, and industrial goods
Linz Upper Austria About 185 km Commercial goods and equipment, and employees’ furniture
Salzburg Salzburg About 300 km Summer visitors’ suitcases, and furniture for seasonal homes
Innsbruck Tyrol About 480 km Students’ belongings, and air parcels
Klagenfurt and Villach Carinthia About 320 km Furniture and belongings; the closest to the Adriatic ports
St. Pölten and Wiener Neustadt Lower Austria Less than 70 km Served with the Vienna distribution
Bregenz and Dornbirn Vorarlberg More than 600 km Air parcels and part loads
Zell am See, Kaprun and Kitzbühel Salzburg and Tyrol In the Alps Families’ suitcases and belongings in the summer season

Delivery inside Austrian cities takes arranging. In Vienna a temporary parking zone in front of the building is reserved through the municipality days ahead, otherwise the truck finds no space. A piece that will not pass the staircase is lifted by an external hoist through the window. Delivery times differ between a city and a mountain village, so we agree a day and an hour with the consignee, and deal with any remark at the door before he signs.

Home Safe services for individuals, companies, government bodies, embassies and consulates

One and the same shipment differs with its owner. The individual wants a clear price and delivery at the door. The company wants a date it can build on. The government body and the embassy want a documented procedure and confidentiality. We assign each group a way of working, and the standard is one: an inventoried shipment, a correct file, and follow-up in the name of a specific person.

Customer What we provide What we take into account
Individuals and families Furniture, belongings, a car and parcels door to door The consignee’s status in Austria and the relief he is entitled to
Students and scholarship holders Cartons and suitcases at shared-shipping prices Arrival as term begins, and the student residence address
Companies Goods, office furniture, exhibition equipment and recurring shipments The delivery terms agreed in the sales contract, and monthly invoicing
Government bodies Printed matter, pavilions for participations and delegations’ equipment The letter of assignment, the official date, and a written report
Embassies and consulates Furniture for premises, and the belongings of diplomats moving post Diplomatic exemptions are requested through their official channels, and we prepare the papers for them

Vienna hosts many international organisations and missions, so the shipments of people moving to and from it are a steady part of this route. The treatment of an international employee’s or a diplomat’s belongings is governed by special rules that the shipper does not decide, so we prepare the list and the bill of lading in the form required, and the exemption request is submitted by the employer itself.

Managing shipments under long-term contracts for companies

A company that ships to Austria every month is poorly served by asking for a new price each time. A long contract fixes its price for an agreed period, reserves it space on vessels in the busy seasons, and puts its shipments on a schedule that both its warehouse and its Austrian customer know.

  • Stable pricing: a price per cubic metre or per container, reviewed at set dates and not with every shipment.
  • A fixed schedule: a weekly or monthly collection day from your warehouse in the Kingdom.
  • One person in charge: an employee who knows your goods, their documents and your customers, and whom you speak to directly.
  • A periodic report: the number of shipments, their actual times, and which were late and why.
  • Staging stock: the goods stored with us until the container is complete or the customer calls for them.
  • Combined orders: small orders for more than one Austrian buyer in a single container, distributed there.

Storage is explained on the storage page.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Austria for urgent parcels and sensitive goods

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Austria

Air freight arrives in 3 to 7 days door to door, and starts from SAR 23 a kilogram, with urgent documents from SAR 83. The shipment leaves from King Khalid airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz in Jeddah or King Fahd in Dammam, and lands at Vienna International Airport, the leading air cargo gateway in Austria. There are direct flights between Riyadh and Vienna according to the current timetable, and everything else passes through a transit hub. From Vienna, shipments are distributed by truck to the other cities.

Departure airport Serves Arrival
King Khalid International, Riyadh Riyadh, Qassim, Hail and the central region Vienna direct when the flight is available, or via transit
King Abdulaziz International, Jeddah Jeddah, Makkah, Taif, Tabuk and Abha Vienna via transit in most cases
Prince Mohammad bin Abdulaziz International, Madinah Madinah and Yanbu From Madinah airport or via Jeddah
King Fahd International, Dammam Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa Vienna via transit
  • Chargeable weight: the airline weighs the parcel and measures its size, then takes the larger figure. So a puffed-up suitcase of clothes may be charged at more than it weighs on the scale. Try your parcel’s dimensions in the volumetric weight calculator before you close it; the divisor used there is 6000.
  • What it suits: students’ and summer visitors’ suitcases, documents and contracts, traders’ samples, and spare parts.
  • Sensitive goods: precision devices in padded crates, and anything affected by heat in insulated packs with advance booking.
  • Restricted by air: lithium batteries, perfumes and pressurised containers, which have their own classification and packing or are switched to sea.
  • Release: an electronic import declaration at Vienna airport, then delivery to the address.
  • What it does not suit: furniture and bulky cargo, for which the price per kilogram sometimes makes the freight exceed their value.

The service is explained on the air freight page, and our office in the article air freight office in Jeddah.

Packing solutions for long-distance international shipping

Packing for Austria is designed for a journey that includes sea, railway and mountain road, with a hot summer at loading and a winter below zero at delivery. The difference in temperature condenses moisture inside the container, and the train shakes the load lengthways in a way the ship does not. So packing for a local move is not enough.

  • Against moisture: tight plastic wrap, and desiccant bags hung inside the container and placed in the appliance cartons.
  • Against shock: foam and bubble wrap in layers, corner guards, and wooden crates for glass, marble and ornaments.
  • Against movement: lashing straps and timber bracing that stop the load sliding when the train brakes.
  • Treated wood: crates and pallets stamped with the heat-treatment mark that Europe requires.
  • The final check: every piece reviewed and the container photographed before it is sealed, with the seal number written on the bill of lading.

Packing methods are in the packing guide, and securing on the packing and lashing page.

Logistics advice before shipping to Austria

Most of what is overpaid on this route comes from a decision taken before shipping without asking. So before you book we answer the questions that change the bill, and we ask nothing in return for the answer. The call takes minutes, and it is built on what you are actually shipping, not on a general list.

  • The method: do you ship everything by sea, or split between sea and air?
  • The port: which European harbour is nearest your address and best for the date?
  • Customs: does a relief apply to you, and which papers do you prepare from now?
  • What is worth shipping: which of your appliances works in Austria, and which piece costs more to ship than to buy there?
  • The car: is it shipped or sold here, once the taxes and approval are counted?
  • Timing: when must the shipment leave so that it arrives after your address is registered, not before?

Door to door means that one party answers these questions and then carries them out. The service is on the door-to-door shipping page.

Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Austria

  1. Description: you send photos of the shipment, your city in the Kingdom, the delivery address and your status in Austria.
  2. Plan and price: we settle the method and the European port, and the price reaches you itemised.
  3. Booking: we fix the collection day and the vessel or flight date, and ask for photos of the papers.
  4. Collection and packing: our team dismantles, wraps and numbers at your address, and you receive a copy of the list.
  5. Export: the Saudi export declaration, then loading at Jeddah port or the airport.
  6. The journey and tracking: the container number or air waybill, and an update at the European port and on entry into Austria.
  7. Clearance: our agent lodges the declaration and the relief application, and you hand him the residence registration.
  8. Delivery: unloading, assembly and checking against the list at your door in Austria.

Tracking and insurance on the Austria route

A shipment to Austria passes between three modes of transport, and the weakest point in following it is the moment of transfer from one to the next. So we notify you at five set points: the vessel leaving Jeddah, its arrival at the European port, the container loaded on the train, its arrival at the Austrian terminal, and the customs release being issued. Between those points you follow the vessel yourself with the container number.

  • Sea tracking: it covers the longest part of the journey, from the quay in Jeddah to the European quay, and its key is your container number. What comes after the port, we report to you ourselves. The explanation is on the track your shipment page.
  • Air tracking: the air waybill number shows take-off, landing and release.
  • Insurance: optional, with a premium that is a percentage of the declared value, and it covers the journey across all its modes if requested door to door. Its details are on the cargo insurance page.
  • Basis of a claim: the photos taken before packing, the numbered list, and a written remark on the delivery note before signing.

Shipping from Austria to Saudi Arabia

The service runs in the opposite direction too, and those who ask for it most are the scholarship student who has finished his studies, the returning employee, and the summer visitor who bought more than his suitcases can carry. Our agent collects from the address in Austria, and the shipment travels to the European port and then to Jeddah, or flies from Vienna. With a Saudi returning with used personal belongings we review the relief conditions in force in the Kingdom before shipping, while new purchases and commercial goods carry duty and tax according to their kind.

Home Safe tips before shipping to Austria

  • Settle your status in Austria first: student, moving residence, or visitor, since everything after it is built on that.
  • Book four to eight weeks ahead of your date, and stay away from late summer and the run-up to the year-end holidays.
  • Write the list of contents in English, piece by piece, and do not write “miscellaneous items”.
  • Insure the shipment you could not replace out of your own pocket.
  • Do not ship what sells in Austria for less than its freight, such as cheap furniture and old appliances.
  • Put winter clothes in the air suitcase if you arrive in autumn or winter.
  • Keep the original papers with you when you travel: the passport, the university admission or employment contract, and a copy of the list.
  • Answer the follow-up team’s messages quickly, since a delay over one paper delays the whole container.

How do you choose a shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Austria?

A company that knows this route asks for your address in Austria before quoting a price, because it knows that a price without a port and European haulage is half a price. These signs help you tell two offers apart:

What you ask about Reassuring sign Warning sign
Registration and address A commercial registration and premises you can visit A mobile number and a social account only
Where the price ends States where it ends: the European port or the front door “To Austria” with nothing specified
The European port Names it and explains why it was chosen Does not know where the container enters
Customs Asks about your status and residence registration “No customs on personal belongings”, said without qualification
The car Works through the taxes and approval with you before shipping Stops at the sea freight
Documentation A numbered list, a bill of lading in your name, and photos A general receipt with no details
Time A time with a margin that covers the train and clearance The sailing time alone as if it were the arrival time

Common mistakes when shipping from Saudi Arabia to Austria

  • Shipping the container long before travelling, so it arrives before the address is registered and waits at the terminal.
  • Comparing a price that ends at the European port with one that ends at the door.
  • Shipping a Gulf-specification car without counting the consumption tax and the cost of individual approval.
  • Putting medicines or foods of animal origin in the cartons of belongings.
  • Shipping new appliances in their boxes with belongings for which relief is requested.
  • Writing an address without the name on the doorbell, so the parcel returns to the warehouse.
  • Shipping large furniture to a flat in an old building without measuring the staircase and the doors.

Frequently asked questions about shipping furniture and goods from Saudi Arabia to Austria

How much does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Austria cost?

The figure follows the kind of shipment before anything else. Sea freight for a saloon car starts from SAR 2,800 as far as the European port. A room of furniture and belongings in a shared container starts from SAR 5,500, and a whole home in a dedicated container from SAR 11,000. Air freight to Vienna starts from SAR 23 a kilogram, and urgent documents from SAR 83. Transport from your city to Jeddah port and delivery inside Austria are then added. For an exact price: 0552803439.

How long does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Austria take?

A full container needs 25 to 40 days from your door in the Kingdom to the consignee’s door in Austria, which covers the sailing, the port train and clearance. A shared container takes 30 to 45 days because it waits for the consolidation to fill. Air freight takes 3 to 7 days including release at Vienna airport.

How does a container reach Austria when the country has no coast?

The container is discharged at a European port, then moved by rail or truck to a container terminal inside Austria, and from there to the consignee’s address. The nearest ports are Koper in Slovenia and Trieste in Italy on the Adriatic, and Hamburg and Rotterdam are used when their service suits the shipment’s date better.

Which European port do you choose for my shipment?

We choose it from the delivery address, not from the sailing price alone. The Adriatic ports are closer to Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna, and the North Sea ports serve Linz and Salzburg over a regular rail network. We name the port and the vessel date for you before loading day.

What kinds of shipments can be sent to Austria?

Household and office furniture, students’ and travellers’ belongings, parcels and gifts, cars, commercial goods and equipment. The exceptions are items the European Union bans or restricts, such as meat and dairy in personal parcels, medicines sent to private individuals, and counterfeits.

What is the difference between air and sea freight to Austria?

Air arrives in days and is charged by the kilogram, so it suits suitcases, documents, samples and whatever is needed at once. Sea arrives in weeks and is charged by the cubic metre or the container, so it suits furniture, cars and large cargo. Many of our customers split the shipment: two suitcases by air and the rest by sea.

What is the safest way to ship furniture to Austria?

A dedicated container sealed at your home in the Kingdom and opened only at your home in Austria. Before that: large pieces dismantled, wrapping in layers that resist moisture, lashing with straps inside the container, a numbered list of every piece, and insurance on the value. If the pieces are few, a shared container is enough with the same packing.

Why does packing matter when shipping to Austria?

Because the shipment is handled more than once: a crane in Jeddah, a crane at the European port, then a train or truck crossing mountains. Along the way there is sea humidity and the cold of a European winter. Good packing protects against all three, and makes any insurance claim easier because the condition of the piece is recorded before the carton is closed.

When is the best time to ship to Austria to cut the cost?

Outside the busy seasons. Demand rises before the academic year begins, before the year-end holidays in Europe, and in summer when people relocate. Anyone who books four to eight weeks ahead finds space on the vessel at a calmer price and avoids rush charges.

Do I pay customs on my used furniture in Austria?

A person moving his normal residence to Austria brings in his used belongings free of duty and tax if he meets the European Union conditions: at least 12 continuous months of residence outside the Union, the goods used for six months before the move, and entry within 12 months of registering the residence. Anyone the conditions do not cover pays duty according to the item and 20% import tax. We review your case before shipping.

Can I ship my car from Saudi Arabia to Austria?

Yes, by sea on a RoRo vessel or inside a container, and shipping starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon as far as the European port. What matters is what follows arrival: 10% customs duty and 20% import tax for anyone not covered by the transfer-of-residence relief, then a consumption tax at first registration, then an individual approval test for a Gulf-specification car. Work through these items with us before you decide.

How does a student ship belongings to Austria?

By the carton by sea in a shared container if time allows, or by the kilogram by air for what is needed in the first week. We collect the cartons and suitcases from the family home in the Kingdom and deliver them to the student residence or flat. It is best to ship five to six weeks before travelling so they arrive as term begins.

Is tax charged on gifts and parcels sent to Austria?

A gift from one individual to another is exempt if it is occasional and worth no more than 45 euros, according to the rule in force. Above that, import tax is collected, and customs duty begins when the value passes 150 euros. So we write an honest description and a real value on the declaration, and confirm the current limits before dispatch.

Do you collect from any city in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. We collect from Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Dammam, Khobar, Qassim, Taif, Tabuk, Abha, Khamis Mushait and others. A sea shipment is usually moved to Jeddah Islamic Port, and an air shipment leaves from the international airport nearest your city.

Do you ship from Austria to Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Our agent collects the shipment from your address in Austria, and it is moved to the European port and then sails to Jeddah, or flies from Vienna to one of the Kingdom’s airports. After release we carry it to your city. With a returning scholarship student we review the conditions in force for exempting personal belongings before he ships.
