Who ships from Riyadh to Libya, and what do they ship?
Riyadh has a long-established Libyan community, the Kingdom’s largest car market, and wholesale markets that Libyan traders come to. So shipments on this route fall into three main types: the home of a family returning after years, a car bought from a showroom or auction, and a trader’s goods. Each type has a method that suits it:
| Shipper | What they ship | Most suitable method |
|---|---|---|
| A returning Libyan family | A full home’s furniture and appliances | A 20ft or 40ft container |
| A buyer from Riyadh’s showrooms and auctions | One car or more | Dedicated or shared container, or RoRo |
| Someone sending to family | Cartons, suitcases and gifts | Consolidated sea or land freight, or air for urgent items |
| A trader or importer | Dates, appliances, building materials, clothing and spare parts | Full container or part load by the cubic metre |
| A contractor or company | Trucks and project equipment | RoRo or flat-rack container |
| Someone with an urgent matter | Documents, spare parts and medicines | Air freight |
Why does shipping from Riyadh to Libya need special planning?
Riyadh is an inland city with no coast. So any sea shipment from it goes through two stages: road haulage to the port, then the sea voyage. Jeddah Islamic Port lies about 950 km to the west, and King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam about 400 km to the east. The nearer one is not the better one here: a ship from Jeddah enters the Suez Canal directly, while a ship from Dammam first sails round the whole Arabian Peninsula. So most Libya shipments leave from Jeddah, even though it is farther from Riyadh.
What makes the difference is running the two stages as one operation: the truck collects from your door, the documents are completed while it is on the road, and the vessel booking is confirmed before it arrives, so the container does not sit in the port yard accumulating storage charges. Riyadh also has a dry port where containers are consolidated and some procedures completed before they move to the seaport, and we use it when it saves time.
Shipping methods from Riyadh to Libya and how long each takes
There are three methods, each with what suits it. Sea is the cheapest per cubic metre and the longest. Land sits between them, and its advantage is that the shipment stays in the same truck from loading to Libya. Air is the fastest and the dearest, and only suits light items.
| Method | Route | Time from Riyadh | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea, full container | Riyadh → Jeddah → Suez → Libyan port | 18–35 days | A full home, cars, wholesale goods |
| Sea, consolidated part load | The same route, in a shared container | 25–45 days | Cartons, one or two rooms, and small quantities of goods |
| RoRo for vehicles | Riyadh → Jeddah → car-carrier vessel | 20–35 days | Cars, trucks and equipment |
| Land across Egypt | Riyadh → Red Sea ferry → Egypt → Salloum → Musaid | 10–20 days | Medium furniture loads and goods, especially for eastern cities |
| Air | King Khalid Airport → transit → Libyan airport | 2–7 days | Documents, urgent parcels and spare parts |
The sailing itself from Jeddah to the Libyan coast usually takes about two weeks. The rest of the time goes on haulage from Riyadh, waiting for the vessel, and clearance at the Libyan port. That is why we give you the door-to-door time, not the sailing time alone.
What lengthens the time?
- Waiting for consolidation: a shared container does not move until it is full.
- Transhipment: some lines change vessel at an intermediate Mediterranean port.
- An incomplete file: an error in the invoice or list of contents halts clearance in Libya.
- Congestion at the Libyan port: it varies from port to port and season to season.
- Land border posts: crossing procedures at Salloum and Musaid lengthen in peak seasons.
Shipping prices from Riyadh to Libya
The price of shipping from Riyadh is made up of three parts: transport from your home to the port, the sea, land or air freight, and services in Libya if you ask for delivery to the door. These are the prices our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Carton | Consolidated sea or land freight | SAR 140 |
| Per kilogram above 100 kg | Consolidated freight | SAR 5.5 per kilogram |
| Cubic metre | Part-load sea freight | SAR 415 |
| Small load | Minimum per shipment | SAR 1,380 |
| Bedroom | Part load | SAR 1,650 |
| Small car | RoRo or shared container | SAR 3,220 |
| 20ft container | Sea freight from Jeddah port | SAR 4,600 |
| 40ft container | Sea freight from Jeddah port | SAR 5,200 |
| Air freight | From King Khalid Airport | SAR 28 per kilogram |
| Documents | Express | SAR 83 |
Prices quoted in the market for this route are higher than that: a carton between SAR 150 and 350, a kilogram for large loads between SAR 6 and 9, a cubic metre between SAR 450 and 650, a bedroom between SAR 1,800 and 2,500, and a small car between SAR 3,500 and 5,000. Container prices move with shipping-line rates, so we fix them for you on the booking day. Haulage from Riyadh to the port is added to the sea freight.
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Method | Sea is cheaper for volume, and air is several times dearer |
| Volume or weight | By the cubic metre by sea, and by weight by air. Work it out with the volume calculator |
| Libyan port | The freight differs between Misrata, Benghazi and Tripoli |
| Scope of service | To the Libyan port, or to the consignee’s door |
| Added services | Packing, dismantling, assembly, storage and insurance |
| Season | Ramadan, Eid and summer see higher demand |
How do you lower the cost?
- Put your shipment on our regular trips to the port instead of asking for a dedicated truck from Riyadh.
- Choose a shared container for medium volumes if your date is not pressing.
- Book three weeks before Ramadan and summer.
- Do not ship what costs less in Libya than its transport.
- Choose the port nearest the consignee’s city; transport inside Libya is costly over long distances.
Sea freight from Riyadh to Libya
Sea is the first choice for every large shipment: a full home, a car, or wholesale goods. A closed truck collects your packed shipment from any district of Riyadh and takes it to the port, where it is loaded into the container and sealed. You have two systems depending on your volume:
| Comparison | Full container | Consolidated part load |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | The whole container | What you occupy by the cubic metre |
| Time from Riyadh | 18–35 days | 25–45 days |
| Handling | Sealed in the Kingdom and opened in Libya | Consolidated and sorted with other people’s shipments |
| Best for | A full home or more than 15 cubic metres | Cartons and one or two rooms |
| Price starts from | SAR 4,600 for a 20ft container | SAR 415 per cubic metre |
A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, the furniture of a two- to three-room flat. A 40ft container holds about 58 cubic metres, a full home or a car with furniture. Sizes are on the container sizes page, and service details on the sea freight page.
Land freight from Riyadh to Libya
This is the option many overlook. The truck leaves Riyadh for Duba port on the Red Sea, boards the ferry as it is to the Egyptian coast, then drives west across Egypt to the Salloum border post and enters Libya at the Musaid post. From there Tobruk and Benghazi lie along the coast road, followed by Sirte, Misrata and Tripoli.
- Its advantage: the shipment stays in the same truck, so handling drops and with it the risk of breakage.
- Time: 10 to 20 days depending on procedures at the border posts.
- Best for: medium and large furniture loads, goods bound for eastern Libyan cities, and foodstuffs in refrigerated trucks.
- What it needs: transit documents through Egypt, and an accurate list of contents checked at more than one post.
- When it does not suit: cars, and very small loads that do not fill a reasonable part of the truck.
Details are on the land freight page.
Shipping cars from Riyadh to Libya

Riyadh is the Kingdom’s largest car market: showrooms, weekly auctions and dealerships. That is why Libyans, individuals and showroom traders alike, come to it and then look for a safe, lawful way to get the car home. The journey starts with a carrier collecting the car from the showroom, the auction or your home and taking it to Jeddah port. There it ships in one of three ways:
| Method | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated container | A 20ft container for one car, or a 40ft for two. Secured with straps and wooden chocks | Luxury and new cars, and those who want to ship belongings with the car |
| Shared container | Several cars for different customers in a 40ft container, with the freight split | Ordinary cars, and showroom traders who import regularly |
| RoRo | The car is driven onto a car-carrier vessel and driven off | Running cars, trucks and buses |
The price starts from SAR 3,220 for a small car. A dedicated container is the safest and the dearest, a shared one waits to fill, and RoRo requires the car to run and to be empty. The comparison is on the container car shipping and RoRo car shipping pages.
Car documents and the conditions for entering Libya
What costs a buyer most is not the freight, but a car that is not accepted in Libya or attracts charges he did not expect. So understand the conditions before you pay at the showroom:
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Proof of ownership | The registration or notarised sale contract, and the stamped purchase invoice if from a showroom or auction |
| Purchase invoice | Showing the model, year of manufacture, chassis number and price; the customs value is assessed on it |
| Export certificate | From the traffic department after fines are paid and plates surrendered; it is the condition for leaving the Kingdom |
| Details of both parties | The sender’s ID, and the Libyan consignee’s name, national number or passport, and address |
| Age of the car | Set by Libya through decisions that change; the figure in circulation today is about 10 years from the year of manufacture. We confirm what applies before you buy |
| Steering | Left-hand drive only |
| Libyan charges | Calculated on value, engine size and year of manufacture, so a larger engine pays more |
| Registration | After release it is registered with Libyan traffic using the release papers and invoice |
Send us the car’s model, year of manufacture and engine size before you buy. A few minutes of checking saves the loss of a whole deal. The general guide is on the car shipping guide page.
The car’s journey from Riyadh to Libya, step by step
- Collection in Riyadh: a carrier collects the car from the showroom, the auction or your home, with an inspection and photos from every angle.
- Completing export: surrendering the plates and obtaining the export certificate, and preparing the file.
- Transport to the port: to Jeddah port in most cases, with other cars on the same carrier when dates coincide.
- Securing and shipping: inside the container or on the RoRo vessel, and issuing the bill of lading.
- Sailing: you follow the vessel with the container or bill of lading number.
- Libyan clearance: our agent files the declaration and follows the inspection and assessment of charges until release.
- Delivery: from the port yard, or by carrier to the consignee’s city.
| Cost item | What sets it | How to save on it |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier from Riyadh to the port | Distance and size of the car | A shared carrier with other cars |
| Sea freight | Method, Libyan port and season | A shared container for ordinary cars |
| Documents and export | Traffic procedures and the bill of lading | Included in the all-in service |
| Libyan customs and clearance | Value, engine size and year of manufacture | Choosing a model with an economical engine |
| Insurance | The car’s value | We do not advise skipping it for valuable cars |
Auction cars, luxury cars and heavy equipment
Each of these three has its own arrangement. An auction car must be collected as soon as the sale closes, so that yard storage is not charged. A luxury car is not loaded the way an ordinary car is. And heavy equipment does not fit in a container at all.
- Auction cars: we collect them straight from the auction yard, and check before payment that they are free of any restriction that blocks the export certificate.
- Luxury and sports cars: a dedicated container, soft straps on the wheels, a driver experienced with low cars, and insurance at full value.
- Trucks and buses: on RoRo vessels, charged by the linear or cubic metre.
- Excavators and project equipment: on flat-rack containers or RoRo after studying dimensions and weight.
- Before handover: a quarter tank of fuel or less, an empty car, and a photo of the odometer.
Details are on the heavy equipment shipping page.
Shipping furniture and household goods from Riyadh to Libya

Many Libyan families have lived for years in Riyadh’s districts, and when the time to return comes, moving the whole home becomes a job that needs planning. The furniture here travels about a thousand kilometres by road before its sea voyage even begins, then stays in the container for weeks in sea humidity. So packing is a condition of safety, not an extra.
- Survey: by photos or at the home, to estimate the volume and choose the container.
- Dismantling: bedrooms, sitting rooms, wardrobes and kitchens, with the screws kept in numbered bags tied to their piece.
- Packing: blankets for wood, foam and bubble wrap for glass and mirrors, double-wall cartons for appliances, and wooden crates for chandeliers and screens.
- Inventory: a numbered list of every piece and carton, used at customs and for checking on delivery.
- Loading: heavy items at the bottom, gaps filled, and the load tied down inside the container.
- In Libya: unloading and carrying into the home, and assembly if you asked for it.
Libya’s supply is 230 volts, much like the Kingdom’s, but the plugs differ, so your appliances may need a plug adapter. Service details are on the furniture shipping page.
Shipping parcels and personal belongings
Gifts for family in Benghazi, a returning expatriate’s clothes, purchases from Riyadh’s markets, and suitcases over the airline allowance. All of these ship by the carton or the kilogram. The choice is between two ways: consolidated sea or land freight if you are not in a hurry, and air if you want them within days.
- Carton: from SAR 140 by consolidated freight, double-wall and no more than 30 kg.
- Per kilogram: from SAR 5.5 above 100 kg.
- By air: from SAR 28 per kilogram, on the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
- Consignee details: full name, city, address and a Libyan mobile number.
- Declaration: an honest description of the contents and their value, and no prohibited items however small.
Details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to Libya
Riyadh is a wholesale hub from which Libyan traders import many lines. Each line has its own packing method and documents. The rule is one: what is prepared correctly in Riyadh passes through the Libyan port without stopping.
| Line | Shipping method | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and foodstuffs | Dry or refrigerated container | Health certificate, certificate of origin and expiry date |
| Appliances and electronics | Sea with shock-resistant packing, or air for high value | An invoice detailed by model |
| Building and finishing materials | Strapped pallets in a full container | Planned weight distribution inside the container |
| Clothing and fabrics | Bales and cartons in consolidated freight | A packing list by count and weight |
| New furniture | Factory packing with a sea protection layer | Invoice and certificate of origin |
| Spare parts | Sea for quantities, and air for urgent items | Part numbers on the invoice |
A regular importer gets a fixed schedule and collection straight from his suppliers in Riyadh. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Packing for a road journey followed by a sea voyage
A Riyadh shipment is shaken on the road for hundreds of kilometres before it boards the ship, then exposed to sea humidity for weeks. So the packing here allows for both: shock and humidity.
- Against shock: multi-layer bubble wrap, double-wall corrugated cardboard, corner guards, and wooden crates for valuables.
- Against humidity: tight plastic wrap, and desiccant bags inside appliance cartons.
- Inside the container: stowage that fills the space, and straps that stop the load moving.
- Labels: a number on every piece matching the list of contents.
Packing methods are in the packing guide.
Documents and customs clearance
Our rule: the shipment does not leave Riyadh before its file is complete and reviewed. A gap is easily fixed here, and at the port of arrival it costs time and storage. When the shipment arrives, our broker in Libya takes over the file: customs declaration, then inspection, then assessment of charges and their payment in coordination with the consignee, then release.
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and personal belongings | A detailed list of contents, the sender’s ID, the consignee’s passport or national number, and the bill of lading | Describing them as a returnee’s used belongings usually earns easier treatment |
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, and the Libyan importer’s registration | Some lines need health or technical certificates |
| Car | Registration, purchase invoice, export certificate and bill of lading | Charges on value, engine size and year of manufacture |
| Parcels | Description and value of the contents, and the consignee’s details | Within personal use |
The documents are explained on the required documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Libya or needs a permit
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Drugs and alcohol | Prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and explosives | Prohibited |
| Counterfeit goods and forged currency | Confiscated |
| Medicines and supplements | By permit, or personal quantities with a prescription |
| Foodstuffs and agricultural products | With health certificates |
| Radio communication devices | By prior permit |
| Batteries, perfumes and liquids | Subject to special conditions in air freight |
| Cash, gold and original documents | Not shipped with furniture; keep them with you |
The general list is on the prohibited items page. If you doubt any item, ask about it before putting it in the carton.
The Libyan ports and cities we deliver to

Libya is large, its coast runs about 1,800 km, and Tripoli and Benghazi are more than 1,000 km apart by road. So the choice of arrival port is no detail: a container bound for Benghazi is not sent to Misrata. We choose the port nearest the consignee’s city and best on schedule:
| Port | Region | Cities it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Misrata | West and centre | Misrata, Zliten, Sirte, Tarhuna, and the southern cities |
| Tripoli | West | Tripoli, Zawiya, Sabratha, Gharyan |
| Khoms | West | Khoms and around, and an alternative to Tripoli when it is congested |
| Benghazi | East | Benghazi, Al Marj, Al Bayda, Ajdabiya |
| Tobruk | Far east | Tobruk, Derna, with the Musaid land post nearby |
Southern cities such as Sabha are served by road from Misrata or Tripoli on request. Write the consignee’s full name, city, district and a Libyan mobile number.
Air freight from Riyadh to Libya

When you have an urgent official document, a spare part a project depends on, or medicine, air from King Khalid Airport is the way. The shipment reaches Mitiga airport in Tripoli, Benina in Benghazi or Misrata airport through a transit point, within 2 to 7 days including clearance.
- For whom: documents, commercial samples, spare parts, electronics and medicines.
- Charging: on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator. That is why we compress the parcel’s size without touching its protection.
- Price: air freight starts from SAR 28 per kilogram, and documents by express from SAR 83.
- What it does not suit: furniture, building materials and bulky goods.
- Restricted by air: batteries, perfumes and liquids, which have conditions we guide you on before packing.
Details are on the air freight page.
Collection from Riyadh’s districts, and storage
We pack and load at your location, in any district of Riyadh: Olaya, Narjis, Yasmin, Malaz, Shifa and others. We also collect from nearby towns and straight from your suppliers:
| Place | Distance from Riyadh | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh’s districts and Diriyah | Within the city | Collection from the door with packing |
| Car showrooms and auctions | Within the city | The car is collected by carrier right after purchase |
| Al-Kharj | About 80 km | Collected the day before loading |
| Qassim | About 350 km | For dates in particular, joining the Riyadh trip |
If your home in Libya is not ready yet, or you are gathering goods from several suppliers, we store your shipment in our warehouse, inventoried, until you say “ready”. Details are on the storage page, and in the article international shipping company in Riyadh.
Steps for shipping from Riyadh to Libya
- Contact: you describe your shipment with photos, and give your district in Riyadh and the consignee’s city in Libya.

Tracking and insurance
The journey is long, and what worries a shipper most is silence. So we do not wait for your question: we tell you when the shipment leaves Riyadh, when it reaches the port, when it sails, when it reaches Libya, when clearance starts, and when release is issued.
- Tracking: with the container or bill of lading number on the shipping line’s site. Details are on the track your shipment page.
- Record: photos of every item before packing and after loading, which are the basis of any claim.
- Insurance: optional, calculated as a percentage of the declared value, and we recommend it for cars, full households and electronics. Details are on the cargo insurance page.
- On receipt: check the pieces against the list and note any remark before signing.
Shipping from Libya to Riyadh
The route works in both directions. We receive the shipment through our agents at the Libyan ports, it sails to Jeddah port, and is then carried by road to Riyadh after clearance. A Saudi returning from work in Libya brings in his used personal belongings exempt with a list of contents. Commercial goods are subject to the Kingdom’s duties and tax according to their type.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Libya?
| What you ask about | Reassuring sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Premises and registration | Commercial registration, an address and a collection receipt | An anonymous account and a mobile number only |
| Method | Asks for the consignee’s city, then suggests the port | One port for all of Libya |
| Time | A door-to-door time with a realistic margin | “One week by sea” |
| Price | Itemised lines: inland haulage, sea, clearance, delivery | One figure and you do not know what it covers |
| Cars | Asks for the year of manufacture and engine size before shipping | “All cars get in” |
| In Libya | A known clearing agent at the arrival port | Its role ends at Jeddah port |
Common mistakes when shipping to Libya
- Buying a car before confirming that its age and engine are accepted in Libya.
- Buying a car with a restriction that blocks the export certificate.
- Choosing a port far from the consignee’s city because its freight is lower.
- Loading furniture without an inventory, so clearance is delayed.
- Packing that is enough for the road but not for sea humidity.
- Comparing a “to the port” price with a “to the door” price as if they were one.
- Booking days before Ramadan.
