Who ships from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is a small country with the largest port in Europe, so those who ship there are of two kinds: those whose destination is the Netherlands itself, and those who use it as a gateway to another country. Among the first are students at Dutch universities, company staff transferred to Amsterdam, The Hague and Eindhoven, and Dutch nationals returning after decades of work in the Kingdom.
| Who | What they ship | Usual method | Customs position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Someone moving there to live, or returning | Household furniture and the car | Full container | Transfer of residence relief, on its conditions |
| A transferred employee | Belongings and a flat’s furniture | Part load or a 20-foot container | Relief with the address registration |
| A student | Cartons and suitcases | Air, or a sea part load | Study effects, exempt |
| A car owner | A running or classic car | RoRo or a container | Duty and two taxes, or relief |
| A trader | Goods to the Netherlands or through it | Containers, with samples by air | Clearance or transit |
Route and transit time for shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands
The vessel leaves Jeddah Islamic Port, passes through the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, exits at Gibraltar and heads north along Portugal and France, then enters the English Channel for Rotterdam on the North Sea. All the major container lines call at Rotterdam, so sailings there are weekly and regular.
| Method | Sailing or flight time | Door to door | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container to Rotterdam | 15 – 21 days | 25 – 33 days | A whole home’s furniture, and goods |
| Part load | 17 – 24 days | 30 – 38 days | Under 15 m³ and students’ belongings |
| RoRo for cars | 15 – 21 days | 25 – 33 days | Running cars |
| Air to Schiphol | Hours | 3 – 6 days | Urgent items and light belongings |
Is there road freight to the Netherlands?
Many people ask, because some adverts mention it. The overland route from the Kingdom to the Netherlands crosses Jordan, Syria and Turkey, then at least five European countries, and every border has its own document and its own wait. So we do not use it for private belongings and furniture: the sea is cheaper and its dates more dependable, and air is faster. Anyone who needs a shipment within a week should send it by air.
What lengthens the transit?
- A part load: it waits for the container to fill in Jeddah, then to be unpacked at the Rotterdam warehouse.
- The relief permit: if it is not issued before the shipment arrives, the shipment waits for it at the port.
- Inspection: Dutch customs selects containers for X-ray or opening.
- Port congestion: in the autumn, ahead of the holiday season.
- Onward transport to another country: it adds two to five days.
Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands
At Home Safe a container is priced as a whole, part loads and furniture by the cubic metre, and air by the kilogram. Prices start as shown in the table, and the final price follows once we know your shipment: send the details to 0552803439 and you will have it the same day.
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| A sedan | RoRo to Rotterdam | SAR 2,800 |
| An SUV or a large car | RoRo or a container | Priced by its size |
| Furniture and belongings | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| A whole home’s furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Parcels, belongings and goods | Air | SAR 23 a kilogram |
What sets the price?
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Method | A part load for small volumes, a container for large, and air the dearest |
| Volume or weight | Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| Collection city in the Kingdom | Riyadh and Dammam add the haul to Jeddah |
| Delivery within the Netherlands | The country is small, so the effect is limited |
| Transit to another country | Additional road or river transport |
| Packing and hoisting | A hoist for narrow houses is a separate item |
| Insurance | Optional, a percentage of the value |
Outside the freight price: Dutch duties, taxes and port charges are paid there, except for anyone holding the relief permit. A car’s registration tax can exceed the cost of shipping it, so work that out first.
How to lower the cost
- Ship as a part load if your volume is under 15 cubic metres.
- Apply for the relief permit before shipping: without it you pay 21% on the value of your belongings.
- Sort out the large furniture: what will not go up a Dutch staircase is not worth shipping.
- Do not ship new items in their boxes: they fall outside the relief.
- Choose where to clear: if your destination is another country, transit may cost less.
Rotterdam, the gateway to Europe: shipping to another country through the Netherlands

Much of what lands in Rotterdam is not bound for the Netherlands. The port links the North Sea to the Rhine, so containers continue from it to Germany, Belgium, Switzerland and Austria by river barge, train and truck.
| Comparison | Transit to another country | Clearance in the Netherlands |
|---|---|---|
| How | Leaves the port under a stamped transit document | Duties and tax are paid in Rotterdam |
| Where it is cleared | In its final country | In the Netherlands, then it moves freely in the Union |
| VAT | At the final country’s rate | 21% |
| Suits | Someone moving to Germany or Belgium, with relief there | A trader distributing to several countries |
Tell us the final country from the first call. The document and the price are built on it. The neighbouring destinations have their own articles: Germany and Belgium.
Shipping cars from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands

Shipping a car to Rotterdam is easy and regular. The hard part comes after the port: three financial and technical stages before the car carries a Dutch plate.
| Stage | What is paid or required |
|---|---|
| Customs | 10% duty on the value of the car and its freight, then 21% VAT on the total |
| Registration tax | Calculated on the car’s emissions: it rises steeply with large engines and falls with age |
| Inspection | A Gulf-specification car goes through an individual inspection by the vehicle authority before plates |
| Classic cars | Anything over 30 years old and in original condition has reduced charges, and anything over 40 is exempt from registration tax |
| Someone moving there to live | Their car falls within their relief if they have owned and used it for six months |
RoRo or a container?
- RoRo: the car is driven onto the vessel. The cheapest, starting from SAR 2,800 for a sedan. Nothing is left inside it.
- Container: the car is lashed inside a closed container. For luxury and classic cars, and for anyone shipping belongings with it.
- For traders: Rotterdam is a point for clearing cars and then selling them in neighbouring countries.
The general conditions are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the methods on the car shipping page.
Relocation furniture and effects, and the transfer of residence relief
Anyone moving their residence to the Netherlands brings in their belongings, furniture and car free of duty and tax. The relief is European in origin, but the Netherlands requires its permit in advance, and that is what many people overlook.
| Condition | In detail |
|---|---|
| Previous residence | At least 12 months outside the European Union |
| Ownership and use | 6 months before the move |
| Time limit for entry | Within 12 months of the move |
| No sale | For 12 months after entry |
| The permit | Requested from Dutch customs before the shipment arrives |
| Address registration | At the municipality, and attached to the permit application |
The right order: register your address at the municipality, then apply to customs for the permit, then the shipment is cleared with it. A shipment that arrives before the permit waits at the port on storage charges, or pays its duties in full.
What to ship and what is not worth it
- Ship: good furniture, carpets, kitchenware, books and small appliances.
- Electrical appliances: the voltage is 230 volts as in the Kingdom, and the socket is European with two round pins, so only the plug is changed.
- Air conditioners: not needed in most Dutch homes.
- Huge wardrobes and wide bedroom sets: measure them against the stairs and doors of your new home before shipping.
- New in its box: outside the relief, and tax is paid on it.
The details are on the furniture shipping page, and the packing on the packing guide.
Shipping students’ belongings and parcels to the Netherlands
The universities of Delft, Amsterdam, Leiden, Groningen and Eindhoven take students from the Kingdom every year. Student housing there is small and usually furnished, so there is little to ship.
- By air: two or three cartons that arrive before term starts, from SAR 23 a kilogram.
- As a sea part load: cheaper for anyone with many cartons and a month to spare.
- The relief: study effects, clothes and the furniture of a student’s room are exempt.
- The declaration: a description and value for each item, in English.
- Parcels and gifts: a small parcel from one individual to another is exempt, and tax is paid on anything above that.
- What not to include: meat and dairy, and medicines without a prescription.
The details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods to the Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of Europe’s largest distribution hubs, and many companies store goods in its warehouses and distribute from them across the continent.
- The importer: a company with a European economic operator number.
- Duty: by heading in the European tariff, then VAT at 21%.
- VAT deferment: an importer registered in the Netherlands accounts for import VAT in its return instead of paying it in cash at the port.
- Conformity: the European conformity mark for appliances, toys and protective equipment.
- Food: plant products with a phytosanitary certificate — dates are exempt from it under current EU practice, which we confirm before shipping — and animal products from approved establishments only.
- Pallets: treated wood bearing the ISPM 15 stamp.
The details are on the commercial shipping page.
Documents required for shipping to the Netherlands
| Type of shipment | Documents |
|---|---|
| Belongings and furniture | Passport, a contents list in English or Dutch, the address registration, the relief permit, and proof of previous residence |
| Car | Registration document, export certificate, purchase invoice, and proof of six months’ ownership for anyone claiming relief |
| A student’s belongings | Passport, university acceptance, and the contents list |
| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s European customs number |
The paperwork is explained on the required documents page.
What cannot be shipped to the Netherlands, or needs a permit
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy and their products | Prohibited from outside the European Union |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Counterfeit goods | Prohibited and confiscated |
| Medicines | Personal-use quantities, with a prescription |
| Tobacco and alcohol | Outside the relief |
| Ivory and skins of protected animals | Prohibited without the international convention certificate |
| Cash, gold and official papers | Carried by hand, with cash declared from ten thousand euros |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivery in Dutch cities

| City | Distance from Rotterdam | What marks it out |
|---|---|---|
| The Hague and Delft | About 25 km | Embassies and international organisations, and Delft’s university |
| Utrecht | About 60 km | The centre of the country, and its university |
| Amsterdam | About 80 km | Narrow canal houses and company headquarters |
| Eindhoven | About 110 km | Technology companies and its university |
| Maastricht | About 200 km | The south, near Belgium and Germany |
| Groningen | About 250 km | The north, and a student city |
Houses in the old towns have narrow stairs, so large furniture is hoisted in through the window. Give the floor and type of building when you book. A container truck cannot enter central Amsterdam, so belongings are carried in by a smaller vehicle, and the parking space is reserved with the municipality days ahead. The destination details are on the shipping to the Netherlands page.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to the Netherlands

Air freight from Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam to Schiphol, one of Europe’s largest cargo airports, delivers the shipment in 3 to 6 days. Flights there are daily, direct and with a stop.

- The practical way: two or three cartons by air, and the furniture by sea.
- Pricing: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: from SAR 23 a kilogram, falling as the weight rises.
