Who ships from Riyadh to the UK, and what do they ship?
Riyadh is the seat of the ministries, embassies, major companies and universities, which is why its shipments to the UK differ from those of any other city. It has scholarship students who travel every autumn to the universities of London, Manchester and Leeds, Britons who have finished their contracts in the capital and are going home with a whole household, families who own a flat in London and are furnishing it, and organisations sending documents and equipment. Each group has a different shipping method and customs status:
| Shipper | What they ship | Best method | Status at UK customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scholarship holder and student | Books, winter clothes and accommodation items | Cartons in a shared container, and a suitcase or two by air | Student relief with proof of admission |
| Briton returning from work in Riyadh | Household furniture, appliances and a car | 20ft or 40ft container | Transfer of Residence relief with prior approval |
| Saudi moving for work or residence | Family baggage and some furniture | Part-load sea freight | The same relief if its conditions are met |
| Owner of a flat or house in the UK | Majlis seating, carpets, ornaments and furnishings | Part load or container | Duty and 20% tax |
| Company and factory | Goods, samples and equipment | Container for quantities, and air for samples | Duty by item and tax |
| Embassy and government body | Documents, staff baggage and exhibition equipment | Air for documents, and sea for baggage | According to the consignee’s status |
The shipping route from Riyadh to the UK and its duration
Between your door in Riyadh and the consignee’s door in the UK there are six stages, and sailing is only one of them. Anyone who tells you “two weeks” means the vessel’s days at sea, not the whole journey. That is why we count the time from the loading day to the unloading day, and break it down like this for a full container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Loading in Riyadh | Dismantling, packing, numbering and inventory | 1–2 days |
| Reaching the port | Truck to Jeddah, or train from the dry port to Dammam | 1–3 days |
| Export and waiting for the vessel | Export declaration and handing the container to the shipping line | 3–7 days |
| Sailing | Suez, then the Mediterranean, then Gibraltar, then the English Channel | 14–20 days |
| UK clearance | Import declaration and the relief number or payment of tax | 2–5 working days |
| Delivery inside the UK | From the port to the address, with unloading | 1–3 days |
Not every shipment is a full container. A few cartons travel in a shared container, so they take longer; a car has its own vessels; and an urgent parcel cuts the whole journey down to days. These are the times from Riyadh by method:
| Method | Route | Time from Riyadh | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | Riyadh → Jeddah → Felixstowe or London Gateway | 27–38 days | A whole house and wholesale goods |
| Part-load sea freight | In a shared container sorted in a British warehouse | 32–43 days | Student cartons and a room or two |
| RoRo for cars | Carrier to Jeddah, then a car vessel to Southampton | 28–40 days | A car that runs under its own power |
| Air | King Khalid Airport → Heathrow | 3–6 days | Suitcases, parcels, documents and samples |
What lengthens the time?
- The vessel’s route: some shipping lines at times divert their vessels to the Cape of Good Hope route instead of Suez, which adds one to two weeks of sailing. We confirm the voyage route on the booking day.
- Late relief approval: a container that arrives before the reference number is issued stays in the port at its owner’s expense.
- A vague contents list: the phrase “household items” on its own prompts UK customs to open the cartons.
- The student season: in August and September the shared containers and the British warehouses fill up together.
- A distant city: Scotland and the north of England add two to three days after release.
The table of times for all destinations is on the transit times page.
From Riyadh to the port, then the UK

Riyadh is a city without a port, so every container leaving it for the UK begins its journey on land. It has two seas ahead: the Red Sea to the west at Jeddah Islamic Port, about 950 km by truck, and the Arabian Gulf to the east at King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, about 400 km by road. Dammam can be reached by a second means besides the truck: the container train linking the dry port in the south of Riyadh to the Dammam quays.
The nearest is not always the fastest. The Dammam vessel passes the Strait of Hormuz and circles the whole Arabian Peninsula before entering the Red Sea, whereas the Jeddah vessel starts halfway to Suez. That is why most of what we ship to the UK leaves from Jeddah, and we turn to the dry port when the shipping line has a suitable sailing from Dammam or when the goods are commercial and their owner wants export clearance done in Riyadh itself.
| Comparison | Truck to Jeddah port | Train from the dry port to Dammam |
|---|---|---|
| Inland distance | About 950 km on the motorway | About 550 km on the freight line |
| Where the export declaration is done | At Jeddah port | In Riyadh, with the container sealed before it moves |
| The vessel’s route to the UK | North to Suez directly | Around the Arabian Peninsula, then the Red Sea |
| Loading furniture | Packed in a closed truck, or inside the container from your door | Inside the container at our warehouse, then to the rail terminal |
| When we choose it | For most furniture, baggage and cars | For factory goods and sailings whose schedule suits |
You coordinate none of this. We compare the two routes on the booking day and reserve the space on the vessel before the truck leaves your district, so that the container does not stand in the port yard and incur storage charges. The service is explained on the sea freight page, and the way out through Jeddah port in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
The price of shipping from Riyadh to the UK
There is no single price for this route, because the unit of calculation changes with what you ship: a suitcase and a parcel by the kilogram, cartons and furniture by the cubic metre, a whole house by the container, and a car by its class. A Riyadh invoice has three visible items: the haul from your home to the port or airport, the sea or air freight, and the service inside the UK. These are the figures our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Suitcases, parcels and samples | Air from King Khalid Airport | SAR 26 per kilogram |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Parcel up to 5 kg | Express | SAR 110 |
| Furniture and baggage | Part-load sea freight | SAR 5,500 |
| Full household furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | RoRo from Jeddah port to Southampton | SAR 2,800 |
| Student cartons | Shared box by sea | Set by the number of cartons |
| Heavy equipment and machinery | Flat-rack or open-top container | Set on request |
| Haul from Riyadh to the port | By volume and loading location | Set on request |
An air calculation example: a student in Al-Sahafah district has three cartons with a chargeable weight of 30 kg, so their freight is 30 × 26, that is from SAR 780. Had there been ten cartons, the shared sea box would have been clearly cheaper for him.
Market prices for this route are very far apart. In air freight a kilogram is published at about SAR 30, ranges for light commercial goods between SAR 30 and 50, and a small parcel is offered at about SAR 400 per 5 kg. In sea freight, the ocean freight alone for a 20ft container is quoted between SAR 2,268 and 4,319, what global forwarders publish reaches between USD 800 and 3,500 port to port, and a cubic metre in part-load between USD 100 and 200. As for a full door-to-door move, figures circulate in pounds sterling: between £3,993 and £4,413 for the furniture of one bedroom, between £6,143 and £10,184 for the furniture of a whole house, and between £7,605 and £9,721 for someone sending a limited amount of furniture by air. The reason for the spread is that each figure covers something different, so always ask: to the port or to the door?
| What sets the price | Its effect on a Riyadh shipment |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The cubic metre by sea, and chargeable weight by air. Estimate it with the CBM calculator |
| Inland haul | 950 km to Jeddah is an item a shipment leaving a coastal city does not pay |
| Scope of service | To the British port, or to the door with clearance and unloading |
| Consignee’s address | London is close to the ports, and Scotland is the farthest |
| Difficult access | An upper-floor flat without a lift, or a street that needs a parking permit |
| Season | Late summer has higher demand because scholarship students travel |
How do you lower the cost?
- Join your shipment to our scheduled run from Riyadh to Jeddah port, so you share the road haul with others.
- Finish the relief approval before loading; 20% tax on your furniture is bigger than any discount on the freight.
- Send by air only what you need in your first week, and leave the rest to the sea.
- Leave behind the oversized furniture that will not pass through British doorways, and sell it in Riyadh.
- Agree a single loading day with your fellow scholarship students, so your cartons fill a shared box sooner.
Each factor is detailed on the pricing factors page, and the figures are compared in the article shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to the UK.
Shipping household furniture from Riyadh to the UK
Riyadh homes are spacious and their furniture is large: long Arabic majlis seating, bedrooms with six-door wardrobes, and dining tables for twelve. British homes are the opposite: narrow doors, winding stairs and small rooms. So the first thing we do at the survey is not to estimate the volume but to ask you about the house that will receive the furniture, so that we can sort with you what is worth shipping and what will not get through the door in the first place.
- Survey: a visit or a video call in which we go through the rooms and write a first list of the pieces and their sizes.
- Sorting: what ships by sea, what goes ahead of you by air, and what stays in Riyadh or goes into storage.
- Dismantling: wardrobes, beds and kitchens are taken down into numbered panels, with their screws in a bag fixed to the panel itself.
- Measuring: for sofas that cannot be dismantled we measure the width and compare it with the door and stair width at the British address.
- Loading: into a container standing at the house if the street allows, or into a closed truck to our warehouse and then the container.
- In the UK: unloading into the rooms, reassembling what was dismantled, and removing the packing waste.
In gated residential compounds and the towers of north Riyadh we obtain the truck entry permit from the management before the loading day and reserve the service lift for the working hours. The service is detailed on the furniture shipping page.
Packing furniture in Riyadh before shipping it to the UK

Furniture leaving Riyadh moves from very dry air to damp, cold British air, and in between spends weeks in a metal container that heats up by day and cools at night. That swing condenses water vapour on wood and fabric if it is not allowed for. So export-standard packing with us deals with three things together: shock on the road leg, moisture at sea, and clarity of the contents in front of the customs officer.
- Wood and fabric: removal blankets, then corrugated paper; painted wood is not wrapped directly in plastic so that moisture is not trapped beneath it.
- Books: in small cartons, because a large carton full of books exceeds 30 kg, so its base tears or it is refused for manual handling in the UK.
- Glass, mirrors and paintings: foam and reinforced corners, and a timber crate of heat-treated wood stamped ISPM 15.
- Carpets: rolled on a core and wrapped in paper that lets them breathe, with moisture-absorbing sachets.
- Appliances: the fridge is unplugged and dried a day before, and the washing machine drum is fixed with its transit bolts.
- Numbering: a number on every carton and piece matching a line in the contents list.
We write the contents list in English from the start, because UK customs and the tax authority read it as it is: “Carton 14: used winter clothes”, not “miscellaneous items”. The same list is attached to the relief application and the insurance policy is built on it, so its accuracy serves you three times. Packing methods are in the packing guide, and securing the load on the packing and lashing page.
Transfer of Residence relief in the UK
This is the most important financial item in a furniture shipment to the UK, and the one most often neglected. Someone moving their main place of residence there brings in their used belongings free of duty and tax, but the relief is not requested at the quayside. The application is submitted online to the British tax authority before shipping, and it replies with an approval carrying a reference number that the broker enters in the import declaration. These are its conditions in current practice, and we review those in force with you before loading:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Residence outside the UK | At least 12 consecutive months before the move |
| Ownership and use of the goods | 6 months before the move, so a new item in its box is outside the relief |
| Import deadline | Within 12 months of the date of the move |
| After entry | Not sold, lent or hired out for 12 months |
| What it does not cover | Alcohol, tobacco and commercial transport vehicles |
| Second home and holiday home | Its furniture is outside the relief |
| Full-time student | Does not need this approval, and has student relief with proof of enrolment |
The application is accompanied by: the passport page, the contents list, proof of your address in the Kingdom within the last six months such as a tenancy contract registered on the Ejar platform or an electricity bill, and proof of your British address such as a tenancy agreement or a bank statement. If you have a car with you, its details and chassis number. The order we do not compromise on: the application, then the approval, then the loading. The approval may take days and may take weeks, and we start the file with you on the survey day, not the shipping day.
Full container, part load or mixed?
Three patterns cover everything that leaves Riyadh by sea. A full container is booked for you alone and sealed at loading. A part load puts your belongings with those of others and you pay for your volume only. The mixed pattern combines sea and air in one shipment under one file: the furniture in the container, and two suitcases going ahead of it by plane. Volume is what decides:
| Comparison | Full container | Part load | Mixed sea and air |
|---|---|---|---|
| You pay for | The whole container | The cubic metres you occupy | Volume by sea and weight by air |
| Time from Riyadh | 27–38 days | 32–43 days | Days for the air part and weeks for the sea part |
| Handling | Opened once on arrival | Consolidated in the Kingdom and sorted in the UK | According to the two parts |
| Best for | A house of three rooms or more | Anything under 15 cubic metres | A family that needs its first belongings as soon as it arrives |
| Price starts from | SAR 11,000 | SAR 5,500 | SAR 26 per air kilogram plus the sea freight |
A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, enough for a flat of two or three rooms once its furniture is dismantled. A 40ft container holds roughly twice that, so it takes a small villa or furniture with a car. Internal dimensions are on the container sizes page, and container rates from the port in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
Shipping the baggage of students and scholarship holders from Riyadh
Riyadh has the Kingdom’s largest universities and most of its scholarship sponsors, and a large number of students leave it every year for British universities. The student asks one question: how do I get ten cartons there without paying excess baggage at the airport? The answer is usually a shared box by sea loaded six weeks before travel, with an air suitcase for whatever cannot wait.
- Timing: anyone whose term starts in late September hands us the cartons in the first half of August.
- Suitable contents: books, winter clothes, kitchen and bedding items, a prayer mat and a Qur’an and whatever they are used to from home.
- What stays with them on the plane: original certificates, the offer letter, the laptop and medicines.
- Address: the name of the university accommodation, the building, the room number and the postcode, and a British mobile number if there is one.
- If accommodation is not yet fixed: the cartons stay with our agent in the UK until the student sends the address.
- Customs proof: the offer letter or enrolment certificate, with the passport and visa.
The reception desk at university accommodation does not sign for a student who has not yet checked in. So we time the delivery for a day or two after your arrival, not before it. The way boxes are shipped is on the parcel shipping page.
Economy and urgent shipping: parcels and gifts
A single parcel has two options, and the difference between them is in time and cost. Economy waits for a consolidated cargo flight, so it arrives in about a week and is charged at the lowest kilogram rate. Urgent leaves on the first flight and is delivered within about three days, which is what a mother chooses when sending her son Eid clothes a few days before Eid. In both cases the parcel leaves from Riyadh itself without passing through another city.
- Price: starts from SAR 26 per kilogram on the chargeable weight, and from SAR 110 for a parcel up to 5 kg.
- A gift between individuals: in current practice a small gift worth no more than £39 is exempt, and tax is charged on anything above that. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Dates, coffee, cardamom and spices: accepted in personal quantities in sealed packs with the contents written on them.
- What is taken out of the parcel: ghee, cheeses and dried meat, alcohol-based perfumes in quantity, and loose lithium batteries.
- Declaration: every item by name, number and value in English; the word “gifts” is not enough.
Moving documents and official papers
Papers that allow no mistakes leave Riyadh for the UK: attested certificates for a university waiting for them before the enrolment date, company contracts, powers of attorney, visa files and the archives of official bodies. These are not treated as a parcel. They go out in a water- and tear-resistant envelope with its own tracking number, and are delivered against the signature of the named consignee, not the signature of anyone at the address.
- Price: starts from SAR 83 for documents up to one kilogram.
- Time: two to 4 working days to London and the major cities.
- Before sending: photograph every sheet, and keep an attested copy of any original that cannot be replaced.
- Large files: a company archive or an organisation’s records ship in sealed, numbered boxes, and a record of their count is written at delivery.
- Confidentiality: no description of the contents is written on the envelope other than “documents”.
Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to the UK
Factories in the industrial cities of Riyadh, Sudair and Al-Kharj export dates, food products, plastics, packaging and oriental perfumes to the UK. Commercial goods do not enter in a person’s name but in the name of a registered British importer with a customs identification number, and on an import declaration lodged before the vessel arrives. So half the work is done in Riyadh: a correct invoice, a correct tariff heading, and packaging that meets the standard.
| Item | Shipping method | What it needs in the UK |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and date products | Dry or refrigerated container depending on the item | A label in English with the importer’s name and address, and a certificate of origin |
| Food of animal origin | Refrigerated | A veterinary certificate, and entry through a designated border control post |
| Plastics and chemicals | Full container on pallets | A safety data sheet and registration of the substance by the importer |
| Perfumes and cosmetics | Sea, and air subject to flammable-goods restrictions | A responsible person inside the UK and a product file |
| Consumer and electrical products | Sea or air | The British conformity mark or the accepted European one |
| Samples and exhibition items | Air | A sample invoice, or a temporary admission carnet for what will return |
Wooden pallets must be of heat-treated, stamped timber, otherwise they are rejected or treated at the shipper’s expense. A regular exporter gets a fixed schedule and a single account manager, with collection from the factory gate. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Shipping heavy equipment and industrial machinery
A used production line sold to a British factory, a generator, a drilling machine going back to its supplier, or a laboratory instrument. These are shipments that begin with an engineering drawing, not a phone photo. We ask for the weight, dimensions, centre of gravity and lifting points, then decide: does it fit a standard container, does it need an open-top container, or a flat rack on which it is chained down?
- Lifting: a crane or forklift of suitable capacity at your site, and a crew that knows the slinging points.
- Base: the machine is fixed on a treated timber base, then lashed to the container floor.
- Sensitive parts: control panels and sensors are removed and packed separately against vibration and moisture.
- Fluids: oils, fuel and coolants are drained before loading, and anything classed as dangerous goods ships with its declaration and labels.
- Out-of-gauge loads: a road permit from Riyadh to the port and an escort vehicle when required.
- In the UK: the machine needs to comply with safety regulations there before it is operated; that is the importer’s responsibility and we remind them of it.
Special container types and lifting methods are explained on the heavy equipment shipping page.
Car shipping from Riyadh to the UK
A car leaves Riyadh carried, not driven. A car carrier collects it from the house or the showroom and reaches Jeddah port with it in one to two days, and there it ships in one of three ways. The usual destination is Southampton, because it is the port where car vessels arriving from the region berth:
| Method | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| RoRo | The car is driven into the vessel’s hold and lashed by its wheels, and it ships empty | An ordinary running car; it is the cheapest |
| Sealed 20ft container | Secured with straps and timber chocks, and the container is sealed | Luxury and classic cars and those whose engine does not run |
| 40ft container | A car with the household furniture, or two cars | A family returning with its home and its car |
RoRo starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port to Southampton, and a four-wheel drive costs more because the freight is charged on volume. Before a container we disconnect the battery terminal, leave a quarter tank of fuel and photograph the car from every side. The two methods are compared on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.
The UK drives on the left, but it does not prevent the registration of a left-hand-drive car. In current practice the tax authority is notified of the car within 14 days of its arrival, 10% duty and 20% tax are paid unless it comes under Transfer of Residence relief, and a car under ten years old goes through Individual Vehicle Approval after the headlamp beam is changed, a miles reading is added to the speedometer and a rear fog lamp is fitted on the correct side. A visitor uses their car on its foreign plate for a limited period. We review which of these rules are in force before booking, and all the details are in the article car shipping from Jeddah to the UK.
UK customs and the documents required
The UK is outside the European Union and has an independent customs system and its own import declaration. So what is written about “shipping to Europe” does not apply to it, and a shipment that enters it does not move on to a European country without a new clearance. The general rule: a duty by tariff heading, and 20% value added tax calculated on the value plus the freight and insurance, except for what enters under a relief. This is the file for each type of shipment:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and baggage of someone moving residence | Passport, the relief approval number, the contents list in English, and the bill of lading | The name on the bill as in the passport |
| Student baggage | Passport and visa, the offer or enrolment letter, and the contents list | The accommodation address in full |
| Furniture for a second home | Passport, a contents list with values, and the bill of lading | Tax is paid before release |
| Commercial goods | The British importer’s customs identification number, plus an invoice, a packing list, the bill of lading and an origin certificate | Extra certificates for food and chemicals |
| Car | Registration and export certificate, passport, purchase invoice, and chassis details | Registration rules are reviewed before shipping |
| Parcel or gift | Sender’s ID, and a declaration of the items and their value | Address, postcode and mobile number |
On the Saudi side we issue the export declaration, and we ask a resident leaving for good for a copy of the exit visa when it is required. Each paper is explained on the shipping documents page, and the release steps on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to the UK or needs a permit
The UK Border Force is stricter on two categories than on any others: food of animal origin, and sharp implements. Many people fall foul of the first in good faith, since a tin of local ghee, cheese or dried meat in a kitchen carton is enough to have the carton detained. We go through the list with you at the survey, and these are its main items:
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy, ghee and cheeses | Prohibited in personal baggage and parcels |
| Daggers, janbiyas, ornamental swords and some knives | Strict rules; they are seized and the owner may be questioned |
| Weapons, ammunition and defence sprays | Prohibited without a British licence |
| Medicines | A personal quantity with a prescription; some items need prior permission |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Ivory, coral and skins of protected animals | Prohibited without the international convention certificate |
| Counterfeit goods | Seized and destroyed |
| Alcohol and tobacco | Outside the relief, and subject to special duties |
| Cash, gold and original documents | Not shipped with furniture; they stay with the traveller |
Anything not shown here appears in the wider list on our prohibited items page. And when an item leaves you in doubt, send us a photo of it while it is still outside the carton.
Receiving the shipment in the UK and the cities we deliver to

The vessel’s job ends at the quay, and our British agent’s job begins: they lodge the import declaration with the relief number or collect the tax, then take the container after release and call the consignee to agree the delivery day. Delivery is not leaving cartons on the pavement. The crew takes every piece into its room, reassembles the beds and wardrobes that were dismantled in Riyadh, and takes the empty cartons away.
| City | Distance from Felixstowe | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|
| London | About 140 km | A council parking permit booked days ahead, and streets a large lorry cannot enter |
| Birmingham and Coventry | About 260 km | Central England, with delivery a day after release |
| Leeds and Sheffield | 320–370 km | University cities; most of their shipments go to student accommodation |
| Manchester and Liverpool | 400–430 km | The north-west, and Liverpool has its own port too |
| Brighton, Bournemouth and Southampton | The south coast | Closer to Southampton port |
| Cardiff | About 400 km | Wales |
| Newcastle, Glasgow and Edinburgh | Up to 720 km | Two to three days are added |
Write the address the way it is written there: house number, street name, town and postcode, since the postcode alone pinpoints the street. Mention the floor and whether the building has a lift. Belfast and the rest of Northern Ireland have a customs arrangement that differs from the rest of the UK, so tell us before booking. Our network is on the shipping destinations page.
Services for individuals, companies, embassies and consulates
The capital brings every type of customer together in one city, and each type needs something different. An individual wants someone to handle everything at a clear price. A company wants a schedule, a tax invoice and an account manager. An embassy wants a procedure that respects the status of the shipment and its staff transfer dates. We arrange the service on that basis:
| Customer | What they need | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Moving a home or baggage without daily follow-up | A survey, an itemised price, and one person who stays with you until delivery |
| Students | A few cartons at low cost | Shared boxes and loading dates before the start of term |
| Companies and factories | Repeat shipments and orderly paperwork | An annual contract, a tax invoice, and a status report on each shipment |
| Government bodies and universities | Exhibition equipment, delegations and books | Commitment to the event date, and return of what comes back after it ends |
| Embassies and consulates | Baggage of transferred staff and correspondence | Coordination with the administration section, and loading from the Diplomatic Quarter by appointment and entry permit |
The Diplomatic Quarter in west Riyadh has gates and vehicle entry permits, so we send the truck and crew details in advance. A transferred diplomat’s baggage is cleared in the UK according to their status and what their mission decides, so we ask for the mission’s letter as part of the file.
Air freight from Riyadh to the UK

Here Riyadh is ahead of other cities: its airport is in it, with direct flights every day to Heathrow covering the distance in about seven hours. The shipment enters the cargo village at King Khalid Airport, where it is weighed, measured and put through X-ray security screening before it is loaded. The door-to-door time is 3 to 6 days to London, and roughly an extra day for Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh and elsewhere after clearance at Heathrow.
- For whom: urgent parcels and documents, student suitcases, commercial samples, spare parts and high-value items.
- Calculation: on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, which is the product of the dimensions in centimetres divided by 6000. Try it in the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: starts from SAR 26 per kilogram and falls as the weight grows, from SAR 83 for documents, and from SAR 110 for a parcel up to 5 kg.
- Security screening: a device with a loose lithium battery, a pressurised container or a flammable liquid will not pass, so tell us what is in the carton.
- What it does not suit: household furniture and bulky goods, whose air freight is several times the sea freight.
The service is detailed on the air freight page.
Air or sea to the UK?
The balance is simple: time against money. What is measured in a few kilograms or has a date that cannot move goes by plane. What is measured in cubic metres goes by ship. Someone moving with a family usually combines the two, sending winter clothes and children’s things by air and leaving the house to the container.
| Comparison | Air | Sea |
|---|---|---|
| Time from Riyadh | 3–6 days | 27–43 days |
| Exit point | King Khalid Airport inside Riyadh | Jeddah port, or the dry port then Dammam |
| Unit of calculation | The kilogram on chargeable weight | The cubic metre or the container |
| Best for | Suitcases, documents and samples | Furniture, cars and heavy goods |
| Price starts from | SAR 26 per kilogram | SAR 5,500 for a part load |
There is no land freight we rely on to the UK. The road crosses many countries and then a sea, and a sea container arrives sealed at a lower cost. The full comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Door to door: one journey with many stages
A Riyadh shipment to the UK moves between a truck and a train or another truck, then a vessel, then a British lorry, and passes through two customs authorities and sometimes two warehouses. Managing these stages is the real service, not the transport itself. In the door-to-door service one coordinator handles every link, and knows where the shipment is today and which paper it is waiting for tomorrow.
- What the price covers: dismantling and packing, the haul to the port or airport, sea or air freight, clearance in both countries, and delivery, unloading and reassembly.
- What it does not cover: British duty and tax if due, the parking permit, and port storage if the consignee’s papers are late.
- More than one address: a single shipment is split between two addresses, such as the family home in London and the son’s accommodation in Leeds, with two separate lists.
- The cheaper alternative: delivery at the British port for anyone with a broker and a haulier there.
The service is explained on the door-to-door shipping page.
Collection from Riyadh districts and nearby towns
Riyadh is a sprawling city, with more than sixty kilometres between a district at its northern edge and one in its south. We send the crew to any district: Al-Sahafah, Al-Aqiq and Al-Arid in the north, Qurtubah and Al-Yarmuk in the east, Al-Wurud and Al-Muruj in the centre, Al-Suwaidi and Dhahrat Laban in the west, and the Diplomatic Quarter. We also collect from the surrounding governorates and add them to the capital’s run:
| Place | Distance from Riyadh | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh districts | Within the city | From the door, with dismantling and packing on site |
| The Diplomatic Quarter and gated compounds | Within the city | With a prior entry permit for the truck and crew |
| Diriyah | Adjoining Riyadh | On the loading day itself |
| Al-Muzahimiyah | About 60 km | On the Jeddah road, so it joins the truck on its way |
| Al-Kharj | About 80 km | Brought to the Riyadh warehouse a day before |
| Al-Majmaah and Sudair | About 180 km | Factory goods by prior appointment |
| Qassim | About 350 km | Added to the Riyadh run, especially for dates |
Our other services in the capital are in the article international shipping company in Riyadh, and the cities we cover on the service cities page.
Temporary storage before shipping and before delivery
The dates of a move to the UK rarely line up. The lease on the Riyadh home ends at the end of the month, the relief approval has not been issued, and the British house cannot be taken over for another six weeks. Storage fills these gaps at both ends: our warehouse in the Kingdom before sailing, and the agent’s warehouse in the UK after release.
- Before shipping: we receive the furniture packed and inventoried, and it stays on pallets until you authorise loading.
- After arrival: the container is unloaded into the agent’s warehouse, and the furniture is delivered when the address is ready.
- Duration: days or months, charged by the space occupied and the time.
- Partial withdrawal: you ask for specific cartons by number and the rest stays.
- What is not stored: food and anything that spoils or ignites.
The terms of the service are on the storage page.
Steps for shipping from Riyadh to the UK
- Request: you write to us what you are shipping, your district in Riyadh, and the British city and its postcode.
- Establishing your status: moving residence, a student, a second-home owner or a trader. The customs file is built on it.
- Survey and price: we estimate the volume and propose the method, and the price reaches you itemised line by line.
- Relief file: we prepare the contents list and the application attachments with you, and you submit it and wait for the reference number.
- Loading: dismantling, packing and numbering at your home, and you sign the inventory.
- To the port or airport: a truck to Jeddah, a train from the dry port, or the cargo village at King Khalid Airport.
- Sailing and follow-up: you receive the container or bill number, and a message at every stop.
- Release and delivery: the agent clears and fixes the day with you, then unloading, reassembly and a signed receipt.
Insuring and tracking shipments
A journey with a thousand kilometres on tarmac, three weeks on water and cranes at two ports is never free of the chance of damage, however well it is packed. The sea carrier’s liability for the container is limited under the conventions and does not make good the value of a household’s furniture. That is why we offer insurance as a separate item, and leave the decision to you once you know what it covers.
- Cover: loss and damage from the Riyadh door to the British door, on the value written against each item in the list.
- High value: paintings, hand-made carpets, medical devices and electronics are listed individually with their value.
- Claim: the remark is noted on the delivery receipt on the day of delivery, with photos of the piece before packing and after opening. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.
- Tracking: the container number on the shipping line’s website, or the air waybill number on the carrier’s website. The method is on the track your shipment page.
- Our messages: on leaving Riyadh, entering the port, sailing, passing Suez, berthing in the UK, and release.
Shipping from the UK to Riyadh
The opposite direction is just as busy. A scholarship student who has graduated comes back with years of books and belongings. A family that spent the summer in London ships its purchases. A buyer from British shops needs an address to receive on their behalf. Our agent collects from the house, the university accommodation or the shop, and combines what you bought from several sellers into one shipment.
- By air: directly to King Khalid Airport, cleared there and delivered in your district.
- By sea: to Jeddah or Dammam port, then by road or rail to Riyadh.
- Saudi customs: a returnee’s used baggage enters as personal effects on a contents list, and new items carry a duty by item and 15% value added tax.
- Commercial goods: anything covered by the technical regulations is registered on the SABER platform before it ships.

Tips before shipping to the UK
- Start the relief application a month before the loading date, and do not book the vessel in the hope that it will be issued on the way.
- Measure the door and stairs of the British house, and ask the landlord for the measurements if you are not there.
- Do not ship in August if you can go earlier or later; it is the month of the scholarship-student rush.
- Write the true used value of each item, not the purchase price and not a token figure.
- Take out of the kitchen cartons anything containing meat, milk or ghee.
- Check the label of appliances with motors to see whether they accept 50 hertz.
- Carry a paper copy of the contents list and the relief approval with you on the day you travel.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to the UK?
In Riyadh you will find quotes with thousands of riyals between the lowest and the highest for the same shipment. The difference is usually not extra profit but omitted items that show up later in the UK. Test whoever is quoting with these questions:
| What you ask about | A reassuring answer | A worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| Legal standing | A commercial registration, a contract and a stamped receipt | A transfer to a personal account with no contract |
| The British relief | Asks about your status and wants the reference number before loading | “There is no customs on used furniture” |
| Time | Distinguishes sailing days from the time to the door | “Ten days by sea from Riyadh” |
| The container’s way to the sea | Names the port and the means of reaching it | Does not know which port it leaves from |
| After the British port | A known agent, with unloading and reassembly in the price | “You collect it from the port”, with no prior warning |
| Volume | A survey and a list of pieces | A lump-sum price from a single photo |
Common mistakes when shipping from Riyadh to the UK
- Loading the container before the relief reference number arrives.
- Shipping an Arabic majlis or a wardrobe that will not go up the stairs of the British house.
- Writing “personal items” instead of a detailed list in English.
- Slipping a dagger or an ornamental sword in among the furniture as an ornament.
- Assuming that the furniture of a holiday home in London is exempt like that of a resident’s home.
- Handing over a student’s cartons in September and then waiting for them until mid-term.
- Comparing a quote that ends at the port with one that reaches the bedroom.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to the UK
How much does shipping from Riyadh to the UK cost?
An air kilogram from King Khalid Airport starts from SAR 26, express documents from SAR 83, and a parcel of no more than 5 kg from SAR 110. By sea, part-load furniture starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house container from SAR 11,000, and a saloon by RoRo from SAR 2,800 out of Jeddah port. Send photos of your shipment and the name of your British city to 0552803439 to receive the final figure.
How long does a shipment take from Riyadh until it reaches the UK?
Air takes 3 to 6 days to the consignee’s door. A full container usually takes 27 to 38 days, of which 14 to 20 are sailing. A part load takes 32 to 43 days because it waits for the shared container to fill and is then sorted in a British warehouse.
Riyadh has no port, so how does my container sail?
We take it to the sea in one of two ways: a truck covering about 950 km to Jeddah Islamic Port, or a container train that carries it from the Riyadh dry port to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. We prefer Jeddah for most UK shipments because its vessel heads for the Suez Canal without circling the Arabian Peninsula.
Which British port does the container arrive at?
Felixstowe on the east coast receives most containers on this route, London Gateway on the Thames estuary is closer to the capital, and Southampton in the south is the car port. We choose between them according to the consignee’s address and the vessel schedule on the booking day.
Do I pay customs on my used furniture when it enters the UK?
You do not if you are moving your residence there and obtained Transfer of Residence approval before shipping. Its conditions in current practice: 12 consecutive months living outside the UK, ownership of the goods for 6 months, and entry within 12 months of your move. Without the approval, 20% value added tax and a duty by item are charged.
I own a house in London and live in Riyadh; is its furniture exempt?
In current practice the relief does not cover furnishing a second home or a holiday home, because it is tied to moving the main residence. The furniture for that house enters with duty and 20% tax on its value plus the freight, and we work out the approximate amount for you before you decide what to ship and what to buy there.
Does a scholarship student need the same relief approval?
No. A full-time student brings in clothes, books and study items under a relief specific to students, and proof of admission or enrolment at the university is enough, with the passport, visa and contents list. We write the university accommodation address in full, with the building name and room number.
Do you ship a car from Riyadh to the UK?
Yes. A car carrier takes it from Riyadh to Jeddah port, then it sails by RoRo to Southampton or inside a container. RoRo starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port, and the haul from Riyadh is added according to the type of car.
Can a left-hand-drive car be registered in the UK?
Yes, British rules do not ban left-hand drive. But the tax authority is notified of the car within 14 days of its arrival, and it goes through Individual Vehicle Approval if it is under ten years old, after the headlamps, speedometer and rear fog lamp are modified. We confirm the rules in force before shipping.
Will my electrical appliances work there?
The British three-rectangular-pin socket is the same one common in the Kingdom, and the voltage is 230 volts in both countries. The difference is the frequency: 60 hertz in the Kingdom and 50 hertz in the UK. So check the label of every appliance with a motor or compressor; if it reads 50/60 hertz it works without a problem.
What must not be put in the baggage cartons?
Meat and dairy and their products, even tinned, knives, daggers and ornamental swords, counterfeits, and medicines without a prescription. A single one of these is enough to have the whole shipment opened and its release delayed, so take it out before the carton is sealed.
Do you ship heavy equipment and industrial machinery?
Yes. A machine that fits a standard container is secured inside it on a treated timber base, and anything beyond its dimensions ships on a flat-rack or open-top container. We need the weight, dimensions and lifting points before pricing, and its price is set on request.
Do you deliver outside London?
Yes, to Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Sheffield, Newcastle, Cardiff, Glasgow, Edinburgh and elsewhere. The northern cities and Scotland add two to three days of road transport after release, and Northern Ireland is mentioned before booking because it has a special customs arrangement.
Is insurance included in the price?
No, it is an optional item calculated as a percentage of the value you declare in the contents list. We think it should be taken for full household furniture, a car and appliances, since the shipment goes through a long road leg, then weeks of sailing, then transport inside the UK.
Do you collect shipments from the UK to Riyadh?
Yes. Our agent collects from the house, the university accommodation or the shop, and it ships by air to King Khalid Airport or by sea to Jeddah or Dammam port and then by land to Riyadh. A returning student’s used baggage is cleared in the Kingdom as personal effects.
