Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Portugal, and what do they ship?
Demand on this route comes from six groups, and each needs a different method and customs treatment. Arab and Saudi families who have bought a home in Lisbon or on the Algarve coast and want to furnish it. Residents who have finished working in the Kingdom and decided to settle in Portugal. Portuguese engineers and technicians going home after years on projects in the Kingdom. Students at the universities of Lisbon, Porto and Coimbra. Traders exporting dates, carpets and plastics. And people sending gifts and parcels to relatives.
| Shipper | What they ship | Best method | What matters at customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| A family moving its residence | Household furniture, appliances and the car | Private 20ft or 40ft container | Transfer-of-residence relief and the consular baggage certificate |
| Holiday-home owner | Arabic majlis seating, carpets, ornaments and lighting | Shared container | Not eligible for the relocation relief, so duty and VAT are paid |
| Portuguese national returning from work | Household effects, belongings and a car | Private or shared container | Proof of the length of stay in the Kingdom and the return date |
| Student | Cartons of clothes, books and a computer | Shared container by sea, or air before term starts | Used personal effects and proof of enrolment |
| Trader and exporter | Dates, carpets, polymers, packaging materials and samples | Private container, samples by air | Invoice, certificate of origin and the importer’s EU number |
| Gift or parcel sender | Dates, perfumes, clothes and documents | Express air freight | An accurate contents declaration and a true value |
The consignee’s status in Portugal comes before weight in our questions: moving his residence, owning a home he visits, or importing to sell. The inventory and the documents are built on it.
Shipping methods from Saudi Arabia to Portugal and how long each takes
There are two ways to move a shipment between the two countries: sea and air. Sea carries everything bulky or heavy at the lowest cost, and air carries what cannot wait. Portugal is the last European stop in the south-west and its whole coast faces the Atlantic, so a ship from Jeddah crosses the Mediterranean from east to west and then leaves through the Strait of Gibraltar. These are the approximate door-to-door times:
| Method | Route | Approximate time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full private container | Jeddah → Suez → Mediterranean → Gibraltar → Sines, Lisbon or Leixões | 24–36 days | A household, or goods that fill a container |
| Shared container | The same route, with consolidation in Jeddah and sorting at the arrival warehouse | 32–45 days | Cartons, a few furniture items and students’ belongings |
| Car by RoRo or in a container | Jeddah → a Portuguese port that receives vehicles | 26–38 days | Private, luxury and classic cars |
| Economy air freight | Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam → Lisbon or Porto | 4–6 days | Luggage and parcels that are not urgent |
The sailing itself is part of the time, not all of it. What comes before the ship and after it takes close to half the days, and this is the usual split for a private container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Collection and packing | Dismantling the furniture, wrapping it and numbering the items | One to two days |
| Haulage to Jeddah port | A closed truck from your city to the quay | Hours from the western cities, one to two days from elsewhere |
| Export and waiting for the vessel | Export declaration, inspection and loading | 3–5 days |
| Sailing | The Red Sea, the canal, the Mediterranean and then the Atlantic, direct or with transhipment | 12–18 days |
| Portuguese port and clearance | Discharging the container, the customs declaration and payment of what is due or acceptance of the relief | 3–6 days |
| Delivery | A truck to the address with unloading and assembly | One to three days |
What lengthens the transit time?
- Transhipment: most services do not sail from Jeddah to Portugal direct, so the container is moved to a second vessel at an intermediate port, and the wait there varies.
- Atlantic weather in winter: heavy swell can hold up vessels entering Leixões and Lisbon for a day or more.
- Filling the shared container: it does not leave the Jeddah warehouse until it is full.
- The relief file: an incomplete baggage certificate or a tax number not yet issued stops the release.
- The islands: Madeira and the Azores need a second sea leg from the mainland.
Which of the two suits your shipment? The detailed answer is on the shipping methods comparison page, and what other routes take is on the transit times page.
Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
The price of a shipment to Portugal has three parts: haulage from your city to the port or airport, then the sea or air charge, then clearance and delivery inside Portugal. The last part varies a great deal between an address in the Lisbon suburbs, a village in the north and an island in the Atlantic. These are our starting prices, and we work out your shipment item by item on the day you call:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon car | RoRo to the European port | SAR 2,800 |
| 4×4 or luxury car | RoRo or private container | Set on request by size and method |
| Furniture and belongings | Shared container by the cubic metre | SAR 5,500 |
| A whole home | Private 20ft or 40ft container | SAR 11,000 |
| Parcels, luggage and samples | Air freight | SAR 23 a kilogram |
| Parcel up to 5 kg | Express | SAR 110 |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Commercial goods in a container | Private container from Jeddah port | Set on request by commodity and port |
| Delivery to Madeira and the Azores | A second sea or air leg | Set on request |
Market prices on this route are rarely published, and most of what we found covers express shipping only. European booking platforms offer documents from the Kingdom to Portugal from about 57 euros and a small parcel from about 76 euros, both before tax, which is more than SAR 240 for documents and SAR 320 for the parcel. Local price guides quote international express at about SAR 40 a kilogram for business accounts and about SAR 120 for individuals, without singling out Portugal. As for containers and cars, nobody publishes a price to the door in Portugal; what is quoted is a bare ocean rate with no inland haulage and no clearance. The usual insurance premium is 1% to 3% of the declared value.
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Shipping method | Shared for under 15 cubic metres, private for more, and air is faster and dearer |
| Volume or weight | By the cubic metre at sea and the chargeable kilogram by air. Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| Arrival port | Sines for the south, Lisbon for the centre and Leixões for the north; the nearest one shortens the road leg |
| Delivery address | Old quarters with narrow, steep streets need a small vehicle and a furniture hoist |
| Collection city in the Kingdom | The farther from Jeddah port, the larger the inland haulage item |
| Customs status | The relief removes duty and VAT; without it at least 23% is added |
How do you bring the cost down?
- Ship in a shared container if you have one or two rooms, and compare with a private one as you approach 15 cubic metres.
- Ask for delivery through the port nearest your address: do not send Porto furniture through Sines.
- Obtain the baggage certificate from the consulate before you travel; it is the key to relief from duty and VAT.
- Leave large old electrical appliances behind; shipping them plus a converter costs as much as a replacement there.
- Combine small parcels into one air shipment, as the minimum charge is paid on every separate parcel.
The items are explained on the pricing factors page.
Shipping to Portugal from the cities of the Kingdom
Collection is available in every region of the Kingdom, and a container bound for Portugal sails from Jeddah Islamic Port whatever the collection city. Jeddah lies on the Red Sea, a short sailing from the Suez Canal. King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam is on the Arabian Gulf, and leaving from it means rounding the peninsula before reaching the canal. This is what applies to each city:
| Collection city | Road to Jeddah port | Air freight airport | More |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah | The port is inside the city | King Abdulaziz International | International shipping companies in Jeddah |
| Makkah | About 80 km | Jeddah airport | Collection from homes and hotels |
| Madinah | About 420 km | Madinah airport or via Jeddah | Closed truck to the port |
| Riyadh | About 950 km | King Khalid International | International shipping company in Riyadh |
| Qassim: Buraydah and Unaizah | About 900 km | Riyadh or Qassim airport | Joined to the Riyadh runs |
| Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa | About 1,350 km, or from Dammam port on a longer voyage | King Fahd International | International shipping company in Dammam |
| Tabuk | About 1,000 km | Tabuk airport or via Jeddah | Closed truck to the port |
| Abha, Khamis Mushait and Jazan | About 700 km from Abha | Abha airport or via Jeddah | Closed truck to the port |
Riyadh has no seaport, so the container is packed in front of the house and sealed, then travels by truck to Jeddah to meet the vessel’s cut-off. People in the Eastern Province choose between the road to Jeddah, which is faster, and sailing from Dammam when the cargo is heavy commercial freight that an extra week does not hurt. In Makkah and Madinah the hours at which large trucks may enter are regulated and become tighter in Ramadan and Hajj, so we confirm the hours in force before loading day. The sea and air charges are the same for every city, and the difference lies in inland haulage only:
| Item | From Jeddah, Makkah and Taif | From Riyadh, Madinah, Dammam and the other cities |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon car by RoRo | From SAR 2,800 | From SAR 2,800; haulage to the port is set on request |
| Furniture in a shared container | From SAR 5,500 | From SAR 5,500 plus an inland haulage item |
| A home in a private container | From SAR 11,000 | From SAR 11,000 plus an inland haulage item |
| Air freight per kilogram | From SAR 23 | From SAR 23 |
All the cities we cover are on the cities page.
Sea container freight from Saudi Arabia to Lisbon, Leixões and Sines

The container is how sea freight reaches Portugal, in the 20ft or 40ft size, private to you or shared with others. Three ports on the Atlantic coast receive it, and each has its own region. Choosing the right port saves hundreds of kilometres on the truck after arrival, which makes a difference to both price and time.
| Port | Location | Serves | What sets it apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sines | The south-west coast, about 160 km south of Lisbon | Lisbon, Setúbal, Évora and the Algarve | A deep-water port that takes the large vessels, and the first in container traffic |
| Lisbon | The Tagus estuary, inside the capital | Lisbon and its suburbs, Coimbra and the centre | The closest point to homes in the capital, with container terminals on the river bank |
| Leixões | Matosinhos, on the edge of Porto | Porto, Braga, Aveiro and Guimarães | The gateway to the industrial north, close to Porto airport |
Not every shipping line calls at all three ports. Some services discharge at Sines and the container then moves north by rail or truck, while others change vessel at a port near the strait and a smaller ship completes the trip to Lisbon or Leixões. We therefore fix the port at booking according to the service available in the week of shipping, and tell you in writing on the bill of lading. General details are on the sea freight page, and departure and arrival ports on the ports and gateways page.
Full or shared container: which suits your shipment?
The working rule: anything under 15 cubic metres goes in a shared container so you pay for your own cubic metres only, and anything above that is costed as a private container. A private one is sealed at your door and opened only before customs or the consignee, so it is safer for valuable furniture and quicker. A shared one is cheaper for a small volume, but it passes through two warehouses and waits for its travelling companions.
| Point of comparison | Shared container | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 m³ | About 28 m³ | About 60 m³ |
| Enough for | A student’s belongings, or one to two rooms | A two- to three-bedroom flat | A villa, or a household with a car |
| How it is charged | By the cubic metre | A charge for the whole container | A charge for the whole container |
| Door-to-door time | 32–45 days | 24–36 days | 24–36 days |
| Handling | Loaded and unloaded at the consolidation and sorting warehouses | Once at your home and once at the consignee’s | Once at your home and once at the consignee’s |
Shipping household furniture from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
Household furniture is shipped by sea, and it arrives intact when it is dismantled and wrapped for a journey of more than three weeks. Our crew takes apart bedrooms, wardrobes and tables, wraps each piece and numbers it in an English inventory that suits Portuguese customs. On arrival our partner delivers to the flat or villa, unloads and reassembles.
Homes in Portugal impose their own arithmetic. The old buildings of Lisbon in Alfama and Baixa, and the historic quarters of Porto, have narrow staircases, many have no lift, and their streets are steep and paved with stone. A large sofa or a wide wardrobe may not pass through the door, and furniture is raised to the balcony with an external hoist.
- Arabic majlis seating and carpets: often requested for holiday homes; carpets are rolled on a tube and wrapped against damp.
- Electrical appliances: electricity in Portugal is 230 volts at 50 hertz with round-pin sockets, so appliances from the Kingdom need an adaptor, and some motors are affected by the different frequency.
- Ornaments, mirrors and paintings: in padded wooden crates, with their value written in the inventory for insurance.
How we dismantle and wrap is on the furniture shipping page.
Relief for the belongings of people moving their residence to Portugal
Anyone who moves his normal residence to Portugal brings in his used belongings free of customs duty and VAT, under the European Union conditions in force. Portuguese customs add a document of their own, the baggage certificate, which the Portuguese consulate in the country of residence issues before travel. Someone who reaches Portugal without that certificate finds it hard to obtain afterwards, so the container stays in the port and storage charges build up.
- Previous residence: at least twelve consecutive months outside the European Union.
- The goods: used and owned by you for at least six months, in household rather than trade quantities.
- Time limit for entry: within twelve months of the date of your move, and more than one consignment is allowed.
- After entry: they may not be sold, rented out or lent for twelve months.
- What customs ask for: the consular baggage certificate with the inventory, the Portuguese tax number, proof of address from the parish council or a tenancy contract, and the passport and residence visa.
- Presence of the owner: the practice is that he is in Portugal at clearance to sign the declarations.
- Outside the relief: alcohol and tobacco, new items in their boxes, tools of a commercial trade, and furnishing a second home to which residence is not moved.
These conditions are reviewed from time to time, so we confirm those in force with our agent in Portugal before the container is sealed.
Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Portugal by RoRo or inside a container

A car is shipped to Portugal in one of two ways. With RoRo a port driver takes it up the vessel’s ramp uncovered, with no wrapping, and it is then lashed by the wheels on an enclosed inner deck. In a container it is driven in, secured with straps and wooden chocks, and locked. RoRo costs less and starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon, while the container gives more protection and lets belongings travel with the car.
| Point of comparison | RoRo | Inside a container |
|---|---|---|
| How it is loaded | Driven onto the vessel under its own power | Placed in the container and secured by the wheels |
| Condition of the car | It must run and stop on its own brakes | Suits non-runners, classics and low cars |
| Belongings inside | Not allowed; the car is handed over empty | Possible in a 40ft container with furniture |
| Arrival port | A port that receives car carriers, the best known being Setúbal south of Lisbon | Sines, Lisbon or Leixões |
| Price starts from | SAR 2,800 for a saloon | Set on request by container size |
Before handover we ask for a quarter tank of fuel only and for personal items and electronic toll tags to be removed; we record its condition with photos in a report you sign. The Kingdom’s formalities come before the port: cancelling the plates and obtaining the export certificate from the traffic department, without which the quay does not accept the car. RoRo vessels to the Portuguese coast are fewer than container ships, so the car may be discharged at another European port and finish the trip on a road transporter. We settle that at booking. The full comparison is on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages, and in the main article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Customs, taxes and registration for a car in Portugal
The ocean charge is the smallest of a car’s figures, and the real sum starts after the port. Portugal is among the European Union countries with the highest car registration taxes, and a car with a large engine can attract taxes above its market value. So we go through the import conditions with you before booking, and tell you plainly whether the car is worth shipping or not.
| Item | The practice | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Customs duty | 10% on the value of the car including freight and insurance | Falls away under transfer-of-residence relief |
| Vehicle tax at first registration | Calculated on engine capacity and carbon emissions | Reduced with the age of the car, and steep for large engines |
| VAT | 23% on the mainland | Calculated on the value after the duty is added |
| Annual road tax | Paid every year after registration | By engine, emissions and year of registration |
| Approval and inspection | Approval of the specification by the transport authority, then a technical inspection at an authorised centre | A Gulf car without a European certificate of conformity needs individual approval |
| Transfer-of-residence relief | 12 months of residence outside the Union, 6 months of ownership, and an application within 12 months | No sale for 12 months, and one car per person at long intervals |
After the car arrives, the vehicle declaration is lodged with customs within a short period of its entry, then the approval and inspection are carried out, then the Portuguese plates are issued. The steering wheel is on the left in both the Kingdom and Portugal, so nothing changes on that side, but changes to the lighting and the speedometer may be required. The figures here are for guidance, and we confirm those in force before shipping. The step-by-step guide is on the car shipping guide page, and our service on the car shipping page.
Shipping parcels, personal effects and students’ belongings to Portugal
A small parcel or a suitcase goes by air, and many cartons that are not urgent go by sea in a shared container. A student travelling to Coimbra or Lisbon takes two suitcases on the plane and sends the rest as cartons that arrive about a month after him. Someone sending a gift to a relative chooses express, and it reaches the front door within days.
- Documents: certificates, contracts and passports by express from SAR 83.
- Parcel up to 5 kg: from SAR 110, and above that from SAR 23 per chargeable kilogram.
- Gifts: the practice in the European Union is that a small gift from one individual to another is relieved up to a value of 45 euros, with tax above that. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Students’ belongings: used clothes, books and study items, with a copy of the university admission in the file.
- Dates and Arabic coffee: accepted in personal quantities, in sealed packs with the contents declared.
An accurate contents declaration is what speeds a parcel through Portuguese customs. The words “personal effects” alone get it stopped for questions, while a list naming each item, its quantity and its value passes. Details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
Commercial goods enter Portugal under European Union rules: a common tariff by commodity, VAT, and conformity requirements for some products. The Portuguese importer needs a European customs identification number for his declaration to be accepted. We arrange the shipment to the port or to the importer’s warehouse, depending on the sale term agreed between you.
- What is exported from the Kingdom: dates and date products, polymers and petrochemicals, packaging materials, carpets, perfumes and incense.
- Private container: for goods that fill a 20ft or 40ft, delivered sealed to the importer.
- Conformity: the European conformity mark for appliances and toys, and a label in Portuguese for foodstuffs.
- Food: products of animal origin enter through border control posts with health certificates, and plant products according to their type.
Before booking we ask the trader for the customs commodity code, the weight and the delivery term. The service for companies is on the commercial shipping page.
Packing and wrapping before the journey to Portugal
A shipment to Portugal crosses the hot Red Sea, then the Mediterranean, then the damp Atlantic, and is lifted by crane two or three times if the voyage involves transhipment. Packing here protects against vibration, moisture and changes of temperature, not against scratches alone. We use what suits each kind of item:
- Wooden furniture: moving blankets and then corrugated board, with protection for corners and legs.
- Glass, marble and mirrors: a heat-treated and stamped wooden crate, as Europe requires for raw timber.
- Appliances: the original carton where it exists, or a double-wall carton with foam, and moving parts fixed.
- Inside the container: moisture-absorbing bags, heavy items at the bottom, and lashing that stops the load sliding.
The illustrated explanation is in the packing guide, and the way the load is secured on the packing and lashing page.
Documents and customs clearance for shipping to Portugal
A complete file before sailing is what makes release in Portugal a matter of a day or two rather than a week. We prepare with you the export documents for the Kingdom and the import documents for Portugal together, and send copies to our agent there before the vessel arrives, so that the declaration starts while the container is still at sea.
| Type of shipment | Documents |
|---|---|
| Personal effects and furniture | Passport copy, a detailed inventory in English or Portuguese, the Portuguese tax number and the delivery address |
| Effects under transfer-of-residence relief | The above plus the consular baggage certificate, proof of address, and the residence visa or permit |
| Commercial goods | Invoice and packing list from the exporter, certificate of origin, bill of lading, plus whatever conformity or health certificate the commodity calls for |
| Car | Registration, export certificate from the traffic department, purchase invoice, passport copy, and the certificate of conformity if there is one |
The taxes and charges collected on arrival are of three kinds, and the consignee should know them before shipping, not after:
- Customs duty: by the commodity’s heading in the common European tariff, calculated on the value including freight and insurance.
- VAT: 23% on the mainland on most goods, with lower rates for some items and in Madeira and the Azores.
- Port and storage charges: handling and demurrage, which grow if clearance runs past the free days.
The list of documents for each case is on the shipping documents page, and what we handle for you on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Portugal or needs a permit
Prohibited goods are of two kinds: what the Kingdom bars from leaving, and what Portugal and the European Union bar from entering. Between them are restricted items that enter with a permit or in a set quantity. We check your list item by item before packing and remove whatever would expose the whole shipment to seizure.
| Item | Status | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Drugs, weapons, ammunition and explosives | Prohibited | Not accepted in any shipment |
| Counterfeit goods | Prohibited and confiscated | We exclude fake bags and watches even for personal use |
| Meat, dairy and their products | Prohibited in private consignments from outside the Union | Taken out of the kitchen cartons |
| Plants, seeds and soil | Restricted, with a plant-health certificate | Dates are exempt under current practice; others are checked |
| Medicines | A personal quantity with a prescription | The prescription and medical report are attached |
| Oud and its oil, ivory and rare skins | Restricted under the endangered-species convention | A commercial quantity needs a certificate; we check a personal one |
| Zamzam water | Not shipped as cargo | Carried by the traveller in its dedicated pack only |
| Batteries and flammable liquids | Restricted by air | Switched to sea or shipped in dangerous-goods packaging |
The full list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering shipments from Saudi Arabia in Lisbon, Porto, Faro and Coimbra

Delivery is to the front door in every Portuguese city, after clearance at the arrival port or airport. Our partner there takes over the released container, trucks it to the address, unloads, assembles and takes the packing materials away. The country is long and narrow: about 315 km between Lisbon and Porto and about 280 km between Lisbon and Faro, so the arrival port is chosen from where your city sits on that line.
| City | Region | Nearest port | What to allow for at delivery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lisbon, Cascais and Sintra | The capital and its coast | Lisbon or Sines | Steep old quarters, and a parking permit for the truck in the centre |
| Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia | The north | Leixões | Narrow streets in the historic centre, and a small vehicle for the last leg |
| Faro, Albufeira and Lagos | The Algarve in the far south | Sines | Villas and holiday complexes, and congestion in the summer season |
| Coimbra | The centre | Lisbon or Leixões | A university city on a hill, with student housing on upper floors |
| Braga, Guimarães and Aveiro | The north and the central coast | Leixões | Warehouses and factories for commercial shipments |
| Funchal and Ponta Delgada | Madeira and the Azores | A second leg from the mainland | A longer transit and a price set on request |
We agree the delivery appointment with the consignee two days ahead, because the councils of the larger cities require a space to be reserved for the truck in front of the building. Anyone who wishes to collect from the port or the agent’s warehouse himself may do so, and the delivery item is taken off the price.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Portugal

Air freight is the fastest way to Portugal: 3 to 6 days from collection to delivery including clearance, starting from SAR 23 a kilogram. It is for parcels and urgent luggage, documents, commercial samples and valuable items. Cargo leaves from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam airports and is delivered in Lisbon and Porto, direct when a suitable flight exists or through a transit hub according to the schedule in force.
| Departure airport | Serves | Arrival airport |
|---|---|---|
| King Khalid International, Riyadh | Riyadh, Qassim and Hail | Lisbon, and Porto for the north |
| King Abdulaziz International, Jeddah | Jeddah, Makkah and Taif, and Madinah when its own airport’s flights do not suit | Lisbon, and Porto for the north |
| King Fahd International, Dammam | Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa | Lisbon, and Porto for the north |
- Chargeable weight: length times width times height in centimetres, over 6000; when that figure is above what the scale shows, it is the one billed. Check yours with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Economy and express: economy is booked on a scheduled cargo flight and arrives in 4 to 6 days, and express arrives in 3 to 4 days at a higher charge.
- Arrival airports: Lisbon airport for the capital, the centre and the south, and Porto airport for the north. Faro, Madeira and the Azores are served by a domestic transfer.
- Delivery: clearance at the airport and then delivery to the address, or collection by the consignee himself from the cargo building.
Details are on the air freight page, and our office in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Is there land freight from Saudi Arabia to Portugal?
We do not offer land freight on this route and do not recommend it. Portugal is at the far western end of Europe, and the road there crosses several countries, borders and transit regimes, which makes it long and costly with no benefit for belongings and furniture. The truck serves only the two ends of the journey: from your city to the port, and from the Portuguese port to the address. Details are on the land freight page.
Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
- The request: you send photos or a list of the shipment, the collection city, the Portuguese city and the consignee’s status.
- Choosing the method: sea or air, private or shared container, and the arrival port nearest the address.
- Price and booking: an itemised price and a collection date, then the booking confirmed on the vessel or flight.
- The document file: the inventory, the consular baggage certificate if you are relocating, and the car documents.
- Collection and packing: the crew arrives on time, dismantles, wraps, numbers and loads.
- Export: the export declaration at Jeddah port or the airport, then the bill of lading in the consignee’s name.
- The journey and follow-up: a tracking number and updates at the main points.
- Clearance and delivery: a customs declaration in Portugal, then delivery, unloading, assembly and a check against the list.
Shipment tracking, insurance and customer service
The journey to Portugal is long, and peace of mind on it comes from three things: knowing where your shipment is, having it insured, and finding someone who answers you. The container number shows you the vessel’s position on the shipping line’s website, and we complete the picture with what the website does not show: the transhipment date, the state of the customs declaration and the expected delivery day.
- Tracking: the container or air waybill number, with how to use it on the track your shipment page.
- Insurance: your choice, with the premium worked out on the values written in the inventory. What it covers and excludes is on the cargo insurance page.
- Customer service: phone and WhatsApp from 7 am to 11 pm, and one member of staff following your file from booking to delivery.
- Rating the service: after delivery we ask you about the condition of the items, the time taken and the handling, and your remark is recorded before the file is closed.
Shipping from Portugal to Saudi Arabia
The route works in both directions. Our agent collects from your address in Portugal and packs, then the container sails from Sines, Lisbon or Leixões to Jeddah Islamic Port, or the cargo flies from Lisbon and Porto to the Kingdom’s airports. What comes most from there is decorative tiles and ceramics for villas, furniture and home furnishings, footwear and leather goods, cork products, and olive oil and tinned fish for traders. Commercial goods are subject to Saudi duties and VAT and to conformity requirements by commodity.
Tips before shipping to Portugal
- Obtain your Portuguese tax number early; there is no customs declaration without it.
- Visit the Portuguese consulate a month before you travel for the baggage certificate, and do not leave it until after arrival.
- Measure the door and staircase of the flat in Portugal and send the measurements before we wrap the large pieces.
- Ask about the taxes on your car before shipping it, and compare them with the price of a similar car on the Portuguese market.
- Insure the shipment at its true value, since compensation is calculated on what you declared.
How do you choose a shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Portugal?
A company on this route is measured by three things: the full cost rather than the advertised charge, the realistic time rather than the sailing time, and a reputation backed by a registration, an address and past customers. A company that knows Portugal asks you about the baggage certificate and the tax number before giving you a price. These signs help you judge:
| What you ask about | Reassuring sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Registration and address | A commercial registration and a known office | A phone number with no business name |
| Cost | An itemised price to the door that shows what taxes fall on the consignee | A single “all-inclusive” figure with no breakdown |
| Time | A door-to-door time that mentions transhipment | A promise of two weeks for a sea container |
| Knowledge of the ports | Names Sines, Lisbon and Leixões and chooses between them | Does not know which port the container will be discharged at |
| Customs | Explains the relief conditions and asks for the documents early | “Your furniture is exempt with no paperwork” |
| Delivery | An agent inside Portugal who delivers and assembles | Its role ends at the quay |
Common mistakes when shipping from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
- Travelling to Portugal before obtaining the baggage certificate from the consulate.
- Shipping a car with a large engine without working out its registration tax there.
- Sending a Porto container to a port in the south because its ocean rate is lower.
- Describing the shipment as furnishing a holiday home while claiming transfer-of-residence relief.
- Putting food of animal origin in the kitchen cartons.
- Writing a token value in the inventory and then claiming full compensation for damage.
- Comparing a price to the port with a price to the door as if they were one service.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Saudi Arabia to Portugal
How much does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Portugal cost?
Our starting prices on the Portugal route: a saloon car by RoRo from SAR 2,800, furniture and belongings in a shared container from SAR 5,500, a whole home in a private container from SAR 11,000, air freight from SAR 23 a kilogram, and an express parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110. Haulage from your city and delivery inside Portugal are worked out with it.
How long does a shipment from Saudi Arabia to Portugal take?
A private container normally arrives 24 to 36 days after leaving your door in the Kingdom and reaching the consignee’s door in Portugal. A shared container takes between 32 and 45 days because it waits for consolidation and is then sorted. Air freight takes between 3 and 6 days with clearance. These are estimates that follow the sailing schedule in force and the pace of customs.
Which Portuguese port does the container arrive at?
One of three, depending on the consignee’s address and the shipping line: Sines in the south, the deep-water port and the largest for containers; Lisbon on the Tagus estuary for the capital and the centre; and Leixões next to Porto for the north. We pick the port from the delivery address, not from the best-known city name.
Is Portugal on the Mediterranean like Spain?
No. The whole Portuguese coast faces the Atlantic, so a ship coming from Jeddah passes the Suez Canal, then the full length of the Mediterranean, then the Strait of Gibraltar before it arrives. Sailing time is therefore some days longer than to Spain’s Mediterranean ports, and many containers change ship at an intermediate port near the strait.
Can I ship my car from Saudi Arabia to Portugal?
Yes, by RoRo, where it is driven aboard uncovered and secured on an enclosed deck, or inside a closed container on its own or with furniture. Cars in both countries are left-hand drive, so the steering side is not an issue. A Gulf-specification car, however, needs approval and an inspection before Portuguese plates, and duties and taxes apply unless it enters under transfer-of-residence relief.
How much tax is there on a car imported into Portugal?
The practice for a car arriving from outside the European Union: 10% customs duty on the value including freight and insurance, then the vehicle tax at first registration, calculated on engine capacity and emissions and reduced with the age of the car, then 23% VAT on the mainland. After registration there is an annual road tax. We confirm the rates in force before shipping because they are revised.
Do I pay customs on my furniture if I move to live in Portugal?
No, if you meet the transfer-of-residence conditions applied in the European Union: at least twelve consecutive months of residence outside the Union, goods you have used for six months, and entry within twelve months of your move. Portuguese customs ask for a baggage certificate issued by the Portuguese consulate in your country of residence, so we remind you of it before you travel.
What documents are needed to ship to Portugal?
For personal effects: a passport copy, a detailed inventory, the Portuguese tax number, and the consular baggage certificate and proof of address if you claim the relief. For commercial goods: commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading and the importer’s European customs identification number. For a car: the registration, the export certificate from the traffic department and the purchase invoice.
Do you ship dates, coffee and spices to Portugal?
Yes. Dates are among the things most often sent to family and friends there, and the practice in the European Union is that they need no plant-health certificate. They travel in sealed cartons with the weight and contents declared. Meat, dairy and their products, however, are not admitted in private consignments from outside the Union, so we take them off the list before packing.
How much is it to send a small parcel or documents to Portugal?
Express documents start from SAR 83, a parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110, and anything above that from SAR 23 per chargeable kilogram. The charge is on the higher of actual and volumetric weight, so a large light carton is paid for by its size, not its weight.
Do you deliver to Madeira and the Azores?
Yes, but with a special arrangement. The two archipelagos lie in the Atlantic far from the mainland, so sea cargo continues from Lisbon or Leixões on a second vessel to Funchal or Ponta Delgada, and air cargo is transferred to a domestic flight. The transit time grows, and the price of the extra leg is set on request.
Which Saudi cities do you collect from?
All of them: Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Dammam, Khobar, Qassim, Tabuk, Abha and the rest. Sea cargo is trucked to Jeddah Islamic Port, and air cargo goes to the international airport nearest your city.
Is insurance on the shipment compulsory?
It is not compulsory, but it is worth having on a journey that crosses two seas and an ocean and moves between more than one carrier. It covers loss, damage and breakage in transit, and the premium is a percentage of the value you declare; the market range is 1% to 3%.
How do I follow my shipment until it reaches Portugal?
You receive a reference number on collection day, then the container or bill of lading number after loading, which lets you follow the vessel on the shipping line’s website. We message you on WhatsApp at sailing, arrival, release and the delivery appointment.
Do you ship from Portugal to Saudi Arabia?
Yes. Our partner collects from your address in Portugal and packs, and the container leaves Sines, Lisbon or Leixões for Jeddah Islamic Port, or goes by air from Lisbon and Porto. What is most requested in this direction is tiles and ceramics, furniture, footwear and cork products.
