Who ships between Saudi Arabia and Italy?
This lane has two faces. What goes to Italy is what people own: a car returning to its factory, a yacht wintering in its yard, a student’s or a mover’s belongings. What comes from Italy is what people buy: furniture, kitchens, marble and lighting. Most customers on the lane use both directions.
| Who | What they ship | Usual method | Customs position |
|---|---|---|---|
| The owner of a luxury or classic car | A car for restoration, shows or residence | Closed container | Temporary admission, or charges, or relief |
| A yacht owner | A yacht for refit or the season | Flat rack or the vessel’s deck | Temporary admission or the refit regime |
| Someone moving there to live | Household furniture and the car | Full container | Transfer of residence relief |
| A medical or design student | Cartons and suitcases | Air, or a sea part load | Study effects, exempt |
| A buyer from Italy | Furniture, kitchens, marble and lighting | A container to Jeddah | Clearance in the Kingdom |
Route and transit time for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Italy
The vessel leaves Jeddah Islamic Port northbound, passes through the Suez Canal, then crosses the Mediterranean westwards. Naples is the first port it reaches on Italy’s west coast, then Civitavecchia near Rome, then Livorno, then Genoa in the far north-west. The port of Gioia Tauro in the south is a transhipment hub for many lines, where the container is moved to a smaller vessel.
| Destination | Sailing or flight time | Door to door | Serves |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genoa | 8 – 12 days | 18 – 26 days | Milan, Turin and the north-west |
| Livorno | 8 – 13 days | 18 – 27 days | Florence and Bologna, and cars and yachts |
| Civitavecchia | 9 – 14 days | 20 – 28 days | Rome and the centre |
| Naples | 7 – 12 days | 18 – 26 days | The south |
| Milan or Rome by air | Hours | 3 – 6 days | Urgent and light items |
How is the port chosen?
Italy is long: seven hundred kilometres separate Genoa and Naples. So the wrong port adds road transport that eats up what you saved at sea. The rule is to choose the port from the delivery address, not from the sailing price: Genoa for anything bound for Lombardy and Piedmont, Livorno for Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna and for the yacht yards, Civitavecchia for Rome, and Naples for the south and Sicily.
Sea or air?
| Comparison | Sea | Air |
|---|---|---|
| Transit | 18 – 30 days | 3 – 6 days |
| Pricing | By volume: the cubic metre or the container | By chargeable weight: the kilogram |
| Suits | Cars, yachts, furniture and goods | Samples, spare parts and suitcases |
| Cost | The most economical for large volumes | The dearest, and reasonable for light items |
Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Italy
At Home Safe a container is priced as a whole, part loads and furniture by the cubic metre, and air by the kilogram. Prices start as shown in the table, and the final price follows once we know your shipment: send its details and your Italian city to 0552803439 and you will have it the same day.
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| A sedan | RoRo | SAR 2,800 |
| A luxury or classic car | Closed container | Priced by its size and value |
| Furniture and belongings | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| A whole home’s furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Parcels, samples and goods | Air | SAR 23 a kilogram |
| A yacht or boat | Flat rack or the vessel’s deck | Ask for it by length, beam and weight |
What sets the price?
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| The port | The one nearest your city saves road transport |
| Method | A part load for small volumes, a container for large, and air the dearest |
| Volume or weight | Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| Special preparation | A cradle for a yacht, a wooden crate for antiques |
| Collection city in the Kingdom | Riyadh and Dammam add the haul to Jeddah |
| Insurance | Optional, a percentage of the value |
Outside the freight price: Italian duties, taxes and port charges are paid there, except for anyone covered by the relief or temporary admission. Ask any company whose price you are comparing: to the port, or to the door of the home?
Shipping yachts and boats to Italy

Italy is the centre of yacht building and refit in the Mediterranean. Many owners ship their yachts to its yards for winter maintenance or to spend the season, then bring them back to the Red Sea.
- Yards and marinas: Livorno, La Spezia, Viareggio and Genoa.
- Lifting: with wide slings at the lifting points the builder specifies.
- The cradle: padded and shaped to the hull.
- Temporary admission: the yacht of a non-EU resident enters temporarily without tax for a set period.
- For refit: it has its own customs regime, arranged with the yard before shipping.
- Before the lift: tanks are emptied, the mast is lowered, and every moving part is secured.
The service is detailed on the yacht and boat shipping page.
Shipping luxury and classic cars to Italy

Italy is the home of sports car factories and their restoration workshops, so cars are shipped there that go nowhere else: a classic returning to be restored by those who built it, and a car taking part in a show or a historic race.
| Case | What is paid or required |
|---|---|
| Permanent import | 10% customs duty on the value of the car and its freight, then 22% VAT on the total |
| Classic cars | Anything over 30 years old and in original condition has a reduced duty and tax. Prove its originality with documents |
| Return to the factory | Italian cars are shipped to their factories or approved workshops for restoration under temporary admission |
| Someone moving there to live | Their car falls within their relief if they have owned and used it for six months |
| Registration | A technical conformity inspection by the vehicle authority before plates |
- Inside a container: for luxury and classic cars. Lashed by the wheels, not the body, and covered.
- RoRo: for ordinary running cars, starting from SAR 2,800.
- Documentation: photos from every angle and a condition report before loading.
- Fuel and battery: a quarter tank or less, and the battery disconnected inside the container.
The general conditions are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the methods on the car shipping page.
Relocation and students’ furniture and effects
Italy is a member of the European Union, so anyone moving there to live brings in their belongings and car free of duty and tax. The conditions are European, but the paperwork is Italian, and that is what delays most shipments.
| Condition or document | In detail |
|---|---|
| Previous residence | At least 12 months outside the European Union |
| Ownership and use | 6 months before the move |
| No sale | For 12 months after entry |
| Registration of residence | At the municipality of the city you will live in |
| The Italian tax number | Obtained before the shipment arrives, and there is no clearance without it |
| The consulate certificate | From the Italian consulate in the Kingdom, proving previous residence |
| The contents list | Itemised, and translated into Italian |
Start with the consulate before packing: the certificate of previous residence is requested while you are still in the Kingdom. Anyone who travels without it needs a power of attorney and correspondence that take weeks.
- Electrical appliances: the voltage is 230 volts as in the Kingdom, and the socket is Italian, so only the plug is changed.
- Large furniture: houses in the old towns usually have no lifts, so measure the stairs before shipping.
- Students: the belongings of medical and design students go in shared crates by sea, or as a few cartons by air.
- New in its box: outside the relief.
The details are on the furniture shipping page, and the packing on the packing guide.
Shipping from Italy to Saudi Arabia
The lane works in both directions, and the return direction is the one most in demand. Anyone building a home or fitting out a showroom buys from Milan, Brianza and Florence: furniture, kitchens, marble, lighting, doors and spare parts. The purchases come from several suppliers, so the whole job lies in consolidating them.
- You send the purchase invoices and the suppliers’ addresses.
- We collect from each supplier on its date, and check the number and condition of the packages.
- We consolidate in one warehouse, and pack for export: wooden crates for marble and glass.
- We ship by sea in a full or shared container to Jeddah, or by air for urgent items.
- We clear in the Kingdom and deliver in Jeddah, Riyadh or Dammam.
| Item | What is required in the Kingdom |
|---|---|
| Customs duty | By product, on the value including freight |
| VAT | 15% |
| Conformity certificate | For appliances, lighting and the items subject to one, obtained before shipping |
| Documents | Invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and bill of lading |
| For individuals | The ID or iqama, with personal purchases cleared in their owner’s name |
Send the purchase invoice and the supplier’s address to 0552803439; the details are on the commercial shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods to Italy
- The importer: a company with a European economic operator number.
- Duty: by heading in the European tariff, then VAT at 22%.
- Conformity: the European conformity mark for appliances, toys and protective equipment.
- The label: in Italian for consumer products.
- Food: dates and plant products with a phytosanitary certificate, and animal products from approved establishments only.
- Pallets: treated wood bearing the ISPM 15 stamp.
Documents required for shipping to Italy

| Yacht | Title and registration document, and the yard or berth booking |
| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s European customs number |
The paperwork is explained on the required documents page.
What cannot be shipped to Italy, or needs a permit
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy and their products | Prohibited from outside the European Union |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Counterfeit goods | Prohibited and confiscated, with a fine |
| Antiques and archaeological pieces | With documents of provenance, and both entry and exit are restricted |
| Medicines | Personal-use quantities, with a prescription |
| Tobacco and alcohol | Outside the relief |
| Cash, gold and official papers | Carried by hand, with cash declared from ten thousand euros |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivery in Italian cities

| City | Best port | Overland distance |
|---|---|---|
| Milan | Genoa | About 150 km |
| Turin | Genoa | About 170 km |
| Florence | Livorno | About 90 km |
| Bologna | Livorno or Genoa | 180 – 300 km |
| Rome | Civitavecchia | About 80 km |
| Naples | Naples | Within the city |
Old city centres are limited traffic zones, so delivery there is by small vehicles and with a permit. Historic houses have no lifts, so heavy furniture is raised by an external hoist. Give the address and the floor accurately when you book. The destination details are on the shipping to Italy page.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Italy

Air freight from Jeddah and Riyadh to Malpensa airport in Milan or Fiumicino in Rome delivers the shipment in 3 to 6 days. Malpensa is Italy’s leading cargo airport, from which shipments are distributed across the industrial north.
- For whom: samples, spare parts, urgent belongings and high-value goods.
- The practical way: two or three cartons by air, and the furniture by sea.
- Pricing: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: from SAR 23 a kilogram, falling as the weight rises.
- And from Italy: an urgent spare part reaches the Kingdom by air in the same time.
Its details are in the article on the air freight office in Jeddah.
Collection from Saudi cities

How to choose a shipping company for Italy
| Criterion | What to ask for | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Legal standing | A commercial registration and a known address | A mobile number with no establishment behind it |
| The port | They ask for the city, then propose the port | “We ship to Italy”, with no port named |
| Customs position | They ask: residence, restoration or sale? | They do not ask about the purpose |
| Scope of the price | To the door of the home, or the yard | “To the port only” |
| Arrival agent | Their name and address in Italy | “We will tell you later” |
Common mistakes when shipping to Italy
- Choosing the port without regard to the city: Genoa for Milan, not Naples.
- A classic car without originality documents: treated as an ordinary car at full charges.
- Shipping a yacht without a yard or berth booked.
- Shipping before the registration of residence and the tax number: no relief and no clearance without them.
- Travelling without the consulate certificate.
- Animal-based food among the belongings: prohibited in the European Union.
- An address in an old city centre with no mention of the traffic restrictions.
- Buying from Italy without asking about the conformity certificate: the goods are held at Jeddah port.
