Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Russia, and what do they ship?

Shipping to Russia from the Kingdom is of three kinds, each with its own route and documents. A trader ships goods to a Russian importer under a contract and certificates. A student or an employee moving there ships their belongings and books, and sometimes their home’s furniture. And an individual sends a parcel to a relative or friend. We begin by asking what kind your shipment is, because the route, customs and price all follow from it.

Type of shipment Examples Usual method
Commercial goods Dates and foodstuffs, petrochemicals and plastics, perfumes Containers to Novorossiysk
Samples and urgent parts What the importer needs before the main order Air to Moscow
Students’ belongings Clothes, books and personal items Air, or consolidated sea
Furniture of someone moving to live A whole home, or part of one Container or part load
Parcels and gifts What one individual sends another Air
Cars The car of someone moving, or one bought for export Container to Novorossiysk

Route and transit time for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Russia

Russia has three gateways from the Kingdom: the Black Sea to the south, which is the nearest, the Baltic to the north, and air to Moscow. The choice follows the city of delivery, the type of shipment and the services running at the time of shipping.

Route Sailing or flight time Door to door Suits
Sea to Novorossiysk 12 – 18 days 25 – 35 days The south, Moscow and the centre
Sea to St Petersburg 25 – 35 days 35 – 45 days The north-west
Air to Moscow Hours, mostly with a stop 3 – 7 days Belongings, parcels and the urgent

A vessel for Novorossiysk passes through the Suez Canal, then the Aegean and the Dardanelles and Bosphorus straits into the Black Sea, and most services transship the container at a Turkish port on the way. A vessel for St Petersburg sails right round Europe, so it takes twice as long.

Why “confirmed at the time of asking”? A number of shipping lines and airlines have stopped or changed their services to Russia in recent years, and payment restrictions shift. So we check what is available in the week of your shipment, and then fix the price and the date.

Is there land freight from Saudi Arabia to Russia?

There is no direct land route between the Kingdom and Russia, as several countries and the Caucasus mountains or the Caspian Sea lie between them. What is called land freight to Russia is in fact a combined route: the goods ship by sea to Turkey, then carry on by truck through Georgia into southern Russia.

  • Who it suits: commercial goods that fill a truck, bound for southern Russia or the Caucasus.
  • Who it does not suit: belongings, parcels and small quantities. Consolidated sea or air is simpler and surer for them.
  • What governs it: the mountain crossing between Georgia and Russia sometimes closes in winter, and the wait at it can be long.

This is a route arranged for each shipment individually, not a regular service. If a company offers you “land freight to Russia”, ask it for the route in detail.

Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Russia

At Home Safe the price is worked out per container for a full sea load, per cubic metre for a part load, and per kilogram by air. Send the type of shipment, its weight and volume and the city of delivery to 0552803439, and you will have the price once the route is confirmed.

Method Pricing unit Suits
A full 20- or 40-foot container The container Goods or furniture over 15 m³
Sea part load The cubic metre Cartons, belongings and a few pallets
Air freight The chargeable kilogram Parcels, samples and the urgent
A car in a container The car One car, or two in a 40-foot

What sets the price?

What sets the price Its effect
The route and carrier available The biggest factor, and it changes from month to month
Port of arrival Novorossiysk is nearer and cheaper than St Petersburg
Transport within Russia Distances are long: Moscow is about 1,500 km from Novorossiysk
Type of goods Anything needing a certificate of conformity or a licence adds cost and time
Season Winter lengthens the time and limits what ships by sea
Insurance Optional, and we advise it on this route

Outside the freight: customs duty, VAT, and port and clearance charges in Russia are paid there. And do not build your sums on a price you heard months ago, as prices on this route shift faster than on others. To work out your shipment’s volume use the volume calculator; container sizes are on the container sizes page.

A full container or a part load?

Comparison Full container Part load
Cost A fixed price for the container You pay for your cubic metres only
Time Shorter Longer, waiting for the container to fill
Handling Sealed in the Kingdom and opened at the consignee’s Handled for consolidation and sorting
Best for Over 15 m³ Under 15 m³

Part loads to Russia are less regular than to Europe, so goods may wait until a container fills. If you have a date to meet, work out a full container or air. Details are in the article on international sea freight from Jeddah.

Preparing the shipment for a long, cold journey

Preparing shipments before sending them from Saudi Arabia to Russia

The shipment leaves Jeddah in heat and arrives in cold, and is handled at a transshipment port, then at the port of arrival, then on a truck covering hundreds of kilometres. Preparation matters more here than on any other route.

  • Packing: sturdier than usual, as the shipment is handled more than once and passes through low temperatures in winter.
  • What freezing affects: liquids, cosmetics and some foodstuffs. They ship by air, or outside winter.
  • Moisture: the temperature difference condenses water inside the container. Desiccant bags, and tight wrapping for cardboard and fabric.
  • Pallets: heat-treated wood bearing the ISPM 15 stamp.
  • Labels: the consignee’s details in Latin or Russian letters, with the package number and count.
  • Product label: consumer goods need details in Russian and the Eurasian conformity mark.

How to pack each kind of item is on the packing guide page.

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Moscow

Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Moscow

Air freight from the airports of Jeddah, Riyadh and Dammam to Moscow’s airports delivers the shipment within 3 to 7 days, with most flights stopping at an intermediate airport. It is the steadiest of the routes to Russia, and the way for anything that cannot wait weeks at sea.

  • For whom: the belongings of students and people relocating, parcels, samples and urgent goods.
  • How it is charged: on chargeable weight, the greater of actual and volumetric. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Price: the rate per kilo falls as the weight rises. Ask for it on 0552803439.
  • After Moscow: the shipment carries on by road or domestic flight to your city.
  • What does not go by air: hazardous materials except by special arrangement, perfumes in quantity, and batteries on the carrier’s conditions.

It is detailed on the air freight page and in the article on the air freight office in Jeddah.

Shipping parcels and students’ belongings to Russia

Thousands of Arab students study at Russian universities, and many travel from the Kingdom or are sent things by their families there. A student’s belongings go by air if they are two or three suitcases, and by sea in a consolidated load if they are many cartons in no hurry.

  • The exemption: a parcel for personal use is exempt up to a value of 200 euros and a weight of 31 kg. Anything above bears 15% duty.
  • The declaration: a precise description of each item and its true value. “Personal items” alone delays the parcel.
  • The consignee: their name as in their passport in Latin letters, their address with the postcode, and a Russian mobile number.
  • Their tax number: Russian customs asks for the consignee’s passport details and tax number to clear the parcel.
  • Winter clothes: send them before October.
  • What not to include: medicines without a prescription, new devices in quantity, and perishable foodstuffs.

Details are on the parcel shipping page and in the article on express international shipping.

Russian customs and the documents required

Customs and documents for shipping to Russia

Russia is a member of the Eurasian Economic Union, so its customs and standards are unified with Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. A certificate of conformity issued for one is valid for the rest, and goods cleared in one move between them with no customs.

Document Note
Commercial invoice With the true value, the currency and the delivery term
Packing list The number of packages, their weight and dimensions
Bill of lading In the registered importer’s name
Certificate of origin From the chamber of commerce
Eurasian certificate or declaration of conformity For many products, and obtained before shipping
Supply contract Between exporter and importer, required by the bank and customs
Special certificates Health, veterinary or agricultural, for foodstuffs
  • The importer: a company or individual registered with a tax number in Russia.
  • The tariff code: each item’s code is written on the invoice. Duty is worked out on it, and it shows whether the item needs a certificate of conformity.
  • Charges: customs duty by tariff heading, and VAT at the rate in force.
  • The certificate of conformity: obtained by the Russian importer or an authorised representative within the Union, not by the exporter. So start on it with your customer before preparing the goods.

The documents are explained on the required documents page, and clearance on the customs clearance page.

The contract and the payment channel before shipping

What most often stalls in trade with Russia today is not the shipment but its price. Many banks do not transfer to or from Russia, so the goods may arrive while the money is stuck.

  • Agree the payment channel first: which bank, and in which currency, before the goods are loaded.
  • The written contract: it sets out the goods, the price, the delivery term and the method of payment. The importer’s bank and Russian customs ask for it.
  • The delivery term: to the port or to the importer’s warehouse, and who pays the charges.
  • Advance payment: many exporters ship to Russia only after receiving the price, or part of it.

Prohibited and restricted goods for Russia

  • Restricted by export regulations and sanctions: some technologies, equipment and their parts. Carriers refuse them even where the country of origin does not ban them.
  • Needing a licence: medicines, wireless devices, encryption devices and chemicals.
  • Foodstuffs: with health and veterinary certificates, and some categories are banned from import.
  • Prohibited in general: unauthorised hazardous materials and counterfeits.

Send a description of your goods before booking, and we will check that the carrier and customs accept them. The general list is on the prohibited items page.

Shipping furniture and the belongings of someone moving to live

Anyone moving to Russia for work or residence ships their home in a 20-foot container or a part load, by its volume. We dismantle, pack and inventory at your home in the Kingdom, and deliver in your city there.

  • The relief: a holder of a Russian residence permit has relief on their used belongings, on conditions and once only.
  • The list: detailed and numbered, and translated into Russian or English.
  • What not to put with belongings: new devices in quantity, as they are treated as goods.
  • Packing: for cold and damp: wood, leather and appliances are wrapped to prevent condensation.
  • Electrical appliances: Russia is on 220 volts with the European socket, so appliances from the Kingdom work there with a plug adaptor.

Details are on the furniture and household shipping page.

Shipping cars from Saudi Arabia to Russia

Shipping cars and personal effects from Saudi Arabia to Russia

A car ships in a container to Novorossiysk, secured with straps and chocks. The freight itself is not the obstacle; what is paid on arrival is.

  • Customs duty: worked out on the car’s age and engine capacity, and it rises steeply for anything over five years old.
  • The recycling fee: an extra charge that rises with engine capacity and age, and it has been raised more than once in recent years.
  • Steering: left-hand drive, like cars from the Kingdom, which is the standard in Russia.
  • Conformity: an inspection and safety certificate before registration.
  • Export: an export certificate from the traffic department, after fines are settled and the plates surrendered.

Work it out before you buy: the charges on a used car with a large engine can exceed its value. Send its make, year of manufacture and engine capacity, and we will estimate what is paid in Russia before any booking.

The general conditions are in the article on car shipping from Saudi Arabia and on the car shipping page.

Storage and consolidation before shipping

Because the route is confirmed at the time of asking, your goods may be ready before their sailing date is fixed. And you may buy from several suppliers and want it all in one container.

  • Storage: the goods stay packed at the warehouse until shipping day.
  • Consolidation: we collect from your suppliers in the Kingdom’s cities, and gather the shipments into one container on one bill of lading.
  • Checking and counting: the packages are matched to the packing list before loading.

Details are on the storage page.

Delivery in Russian cities

Russia is the largest country in the world, and inland transport there is a large part of the time and the cost. Choosing the right gateway saves days: Novorossiysk for the south and the Caucasus, Moscow by air for the centre, and St Petersburg for the north-west.

City Best gateway Road distance
Krasnodar Novorossiysk About 150 km
Sochi Novorossiysk About 300 km
Rostov Novorossiysk About 400 km
Grozny and Makhachkala Novorossiysk 700 – 900 km
Moscow By air, or Novorossiysk About 1,500 km from the port
St Petersburg Its own port, or Moscow About 700 km from Moscow
Kazan Moscow About 800 km from Moscow
Yekaterinburg Moscow About 1,800 km from Moscow

More on the destination is on the shipping to Russia page.

Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Russia

  1. You send the shipment’s details: type, weight and volume, and the Russian city.
  2. We check that the goods are accepted by the carrier and by customs.
  3. We confirm the route available in the week of shipping.
  4. You receive the price and the date after confirmation.
  5. Collection, preparation and export clearance.
  6. Shipping and follow-up through to arrival.
  7. Clearance and delivery in Russia with the importer or their agent.

Insurance and tracking

  • Insurance: optional, a percentage of the shipment’s value. We advise it here more than on any other route: the journey is long, the handling repeated, and the carrier’s liability limited.
  • What it covers: ask whether the policy includes this destination, as some insurers exclude it.
  • Tracking: by the container or bill of lading number, from the track your shipment page.
  • Updates: at loading, at transshipment, on arrival and at release.

Details are on the cargo insurance page.

Advice before shipping to Russia

  1. Start with the importer: are they registered, do they have a broker, and have they begun the certificate of conformity?
  2. Settle payment before preparing the goods.
  3. Send the goods’ description and tariff code so we can check they are accepted.
  4. Choose the season: anything that freezing damages does not ship by sea between November and March.
  5. Leave a margin on the date: a week or two beyond the stated time.
  6. Insure the shipment.

Common mistakes when shipping to Russia

  • Relying on an old price: prices on this route change faster than on others.
  • Shipping before the certificate of conformity: the goods are held at the port.
  • Neglecting the payment channel: the goods arrive and the money does not.
  • Shipping a restricted item: the carrier refuses it midway.
  • Shipping liquids by sea in winter: they freeze and spoil.
  • Costing inland transport as if distances were short: Russia is vast, and road is a large part of the cost.
  • Buying a car for export without working out its charges in Russia.
  • A parcel without the consignee’s passport details and tax number: it stays at customs.
