Who ships from Jeddah to Senegal, and what do they ship?
Jeddah and Dakar share an old link built on pilgrimage and trade together. Senegal is a Muslim country that sends thousands of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims every season, and many of its traders visit Jeddah to buy in person. That is why three groups stand out on this line: a trader filling a container, a pilgrim shipping what exceeds the aircraft allowance, and a Senegalese resident finishing work and going home with household belongings. Each group has a shipping method that suits it better than the others.
| Shipper | Typical shipment | Best method |
|---|---|---|
| Wholesale trader from Dakar | Fabrics, abayas, prayer rugs, perfumes and incense | A full 20ft container, or a shared one for a small quantity |
| Spare parts trader | Car parts, used engines, tyres and oils | A 40ft container, sometimes with a car |
| Buyer of a car from Jeddah showrooms | A private car or light commercial vehicle within the age limit | Inside a container, or on a RoRo vessel when available |
| Food importer | Dates and packaged Saudi food products | A full container with its health certificates |
| Hajj or Umrah pilgrim | Suitcases, gifts, copies of the Quran and dates | Air by the kilogram, or a share in a shared container |
| Returning Senegalese resident | Home appliances, furniture and clothes | A shared container with a French inventory |
| Company or office | Contracts, samples and an urgent spare part | Express shipping |

The shipping route from Jeddah to Senegal and its transit time
Dakar sits at the tip of a peninsula that is the westernmost point of the African continent, so a vessel coming from Jeddah goes round the whole of North Africa to reach it. It heads up the Red Sea to the Suez Canal, crosses the Mediterranean from east to west, then enters the Atlantic and runs south. The usual pattern is that the container is discharged at a hub port near the Strait of Gibraltar and loaded onto a smaller vessel calling at the ports of the coast. That stop is what makes the transit time a range, not a single figure.
| Stage | What happens | Approximate time |
|---|---|---|
| Collection in Jeddah | Survey, packing, loading the container and sealing it | 1–3 days |
| Jeddah Islamic Port | Export declaration, entry to the yard, loading onto the vessel | 2–5 days |
| Sailing | Suez, then the Mediterranean, the transhipment port and the Atlantic | 20–30 days |
| Port of Dakar | Discharge, matching the cargo tracking note, customs examination, payment of duties | 5–9 days |
| Delivery | A truck to Dakar or to another city | 1–3 days |
And these are the door-to-door times by method, so that you can compare them before choosing:
| Method | Sailing or flight | Door to door | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | 20–30 days | 30–42 days | Goods that fill a container, or a car with goods |
| Shared container | 24–34 days | 35–45 days | Anything under 15 cubic metres |
| RoRo vessel | Depends on the sailing available | Set at booking | Running vehicles and trucks |
| Air | One to two days with a stop | 4–7 days | Parcels, samples and documents |
What lengthens the transit time?
- The connecting vessel: if the container reaches the transhipment port after the second vessel has left, it stays until the next sailing.
- The tracking note number: a bill of lading issued without the BSC number is sent back for amendment, and the amendment takes days.
- Original documents: Dakar asks for the original bill of lading on shipments of personal effects, and its late arrival by post stops the release.
- Inspection: goods covered by the verification programme and not inspected before sailing wait their turn on arrival.
- The seasons: the weeks before Ramadan, the two Eids and the Grand Magal in Touba are periods of pressure on the port and the roads.
- The rainy season: between summer and autumn the rains slow transport to inland cities.
Times for the other destinations are on the transit times page.
Sea container freight from Jeddah to the port of Dakar
The container is the first means of transport on this line. It is loaded at your warehouse or in our yard, sealed with a number written on the bill of lading, and enters Jeddah Islamic Port, which is served by the container lines heading for Suez. At the other end is the port of Dakar, a deep port sheltered in a natural bay, with a modern container terminal and berths for general cargo and vehicles.

The choice of size follows the volume and weight of the goods, not preference. These are the three sizes we book from Jeddah Islamic Port to the port of Dakar, with what suits each of them:
| Container | Approximate capacity | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| 20ft | About 28 usable cubic metres | Heavy goods such as oils and tiles, or one car with cartons |
| 40ft | About 58 usable cubic metres | Fabrics, furniture and tyres, or two mid-sized cars |
| 40ft high cube | About 68 usable cubic metres | Light bulky goods, or a high-roofed vehicle |
Senegal is building a new deep-water port at Ndayane, south of the capital, and it is under construction. Until it enters service all our bookings remain on the port of Dakar, and we will write the name of the port in the price if anything changes. The internal dimensions of each container are on the container sizes page, and you can work out the volume of your goods with the CBM calculator. What happens in the port on the Jeddah side is explained in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping prices from Jeddah to Senegal
We found nobody publishing a price for the Jeddah–Dakar line to measure against, so we have used the prices of our nearest priced line to West Africa as they are, without adjustment. The figures in the table are a starting point, and the price of your shipment is written once we know its volume, weight and city. The sea freight ends at the Dakar quay, so Senegalese taxes and the clearing agent’s fee there are separate items paid by the consignee.
| Service | Price | Charged on |
|---|---|---|
| Saloon car by sea | Starts from SAR 2,800 | One running car |
| Air freight | Starts from SAR 28 a kilogram | Chargeable weight |
| Express parcel up to 5 kg | Starts from SAR 110 | The parcel |
| Express documents up to one kilogram | Starts from SAR 83 | The envelope |
| Full 20ft or 40ft container | Set on request | The container and the sailing date |
| Share in a shared container | Set on request | The cubic metre |
| Truck, equipment or large car | Set on request | Dimensions and weight |
| Delivery from the port of Dakar to the cities | Set on request | City and volume |
Prices quoted in the market: the Arabic pages that discuss international shipping from the Kingdom do not give a price for Senegal by name. What they publish are general figures: a kilogram by express with parcel companies at between SAR 40 and SAR 120 depending on the type of account, and customs charges estimated at between 0.5% and 15% of the value with no country specified. The previous article on our site gave no figure and said only that the price follows weight, volume, destination and speed. Shipping lines sometimes add an emergency surcharge on West Africa containers in periods of congestion, which is why we tie the container price to its date.
| What sets the price | How it affects it |
|---|---|
| Volume and weight | Shared space is charged by the cubic metre, and a full container at one rate whatever you load within its permitted weight |
| Type of goods | Perfumes and batteries are classed as dangerous and carry their own rate and declaration |
| Sailing date | The shipping line’s rate moves from month to month and rises before the seasons |
| Collection point | Inside Jeddah the charge is much the same, and from Makkah or Taif the road charge is added |
| Packing | Pallets and timber crates are a separate item stated by number |
| Tracking note and inspection | A fee that follows the type of shipment and the number of containers |
| Delivery city | Dakar costs least, and Ziguinchor and Tambacounda most because of the distance |
How do you bring the cost down?
- Combine your purchases from several suppliers in one container instead of separate shipments.
- Compare the shared-container price with a full 20ft once your goods pass half its volume.
- Fill the space around the car with documented spare parts, since the container rate is the same.
- Book weeks ahead of the peak seasons, as rates rise the closer Ramadan and the Hajj season come.
- Have your consignee and his clearing agent ready before the vessel arrives, as storage charges in Dakar run by the day.
We do not advertise fixed discounts. What really falls is the unit price as the shipment grows or is repeated, and we write that in the price when it applies. The items are detailed on the pricing factors page.
Payment methods and what the invoice contains
The freight charge is paid in Jeddah in riyals and written in an invoice that names every item. In it we separate what you pay us from what your consignee pays there, so that the two accounts are not confused.
- Bank transfer: to the establishment’s account in its trade name, which suits companies and large amounts best.
- Cash: on collection from your location against a stamped receipt voucher.
- Electronic methods: we mention those available with the price on the day you ask.
- What is paid in Dakar: customs duties, taxes and the clearing agent’s fee, in CFA francs and from the consignee’s account.
Before you pay, check three things: that the beneficiary name is the name of the establishment, that the invoice states where the service ends, and that the receipt voucher carries your order number. Keep a copy of the transfer until you receive the bill of lading.
What sets shipping from Jeddah apart on the Dakar line?
On this line Jeddah brings three things together in one city: the market, the port and the airport. A Senegalese trader buys from the markets of Al-Balad, Bab Makkah and Bab Sharif during the day, and his goods are sorted and stacked that same evening a few kilometres from the quay.
The second point is that Jeddah is the pilgrims’ gateway. Our staff know the departure schedules of the missions and where they stay, and they collect luggage two or three days before departure. The third is that a booking is easily adjusted: if an order from a supplier is late, the container waits in our nearby yard and catches the next vessel. The rest of what the city offers in this field is set out in the article international shipping companies in Jeddah.
Shipping commercial goods, vehicles and spare parts from Jeddah to Senegal
Three kinds of cargo fill most of our containers to Dakar, and they often share one container. Commercial goods are stacked on wooden pallets and wrapped in stretch film so that a forklift lifts them without the cartons being touched. The car enters the container on loading ramps and is lashed by its wheels. Spare parts and tyres fill whatever space is left.

Commercial goods: Dakar traders order from Jeddah fabrics, abayas, blankets, prayer rugs, prayer beads, perfumes, oud oil and incense, along with dates, packaged food and household utensils. We collect them from the shops with their invoices and prepare for each container a commercial invoice and packing list in French and a certificate of origin. Perfumes are flammable liquids, so they are stated in the documents under their correct name and go by sea.
Spare parts and tyres: a used engine and a gearbox are drained of oil, fixed on a wooden pallet and wrapped. Tyres are nested inside one another to save volume. Small parts are gathered in numbered cartons, each marked with what it holds. A precise description on the list shortens the examination in Dakar, while a general description invites the inspector to open every carton. How traders’ goods are prepared is on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Jeddah to Dakar: the age limit and the loading method
Before talking about loading, you need to be sure the car can enter Senegal at all. The state sets a maximum age for imported used vehicles and raised it recently from eight years. The limits now applied are in the table, and we check them with the clearing agent before every booking because they have been amended more than once in past years.
| Vehicle category | Maximum age applied on import |
|---|---|
| Private car | 10 years |
| Light commercial vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes | 10 years |
| Goods truck over 3.5 tonnes and bus | 15 years |
| Small motorcycle up to 50 cc | Prohibited |
Send us the year of manufacture and the date of first registration before you pay for the car, and leave a margin between it and the limit because the journey takes six weeks. Senegal drives with the steering wheel on the left, as in the Kingdom, so no modification is needed on that score. The car attracts duties and value added tax assessed by Senegalese customs on a value they determine, and we ask the clearing agent for an estimate before shipping.
The regular loading method on this line is the container. The battery is disconnected, a quarter of a tank is left, and the car is strapped down on its four wheels with chocks in front and behind. A 20ft container takes one car and a 40ft takes two mid-sized cars. A RoRo vessel is an option for a running vehicle or a truck when a suitable sailing is available, and a saloon on it starts from SAR 2,800. On the Kingdom’s side the car leaves with an export certificate from the traffic department once fines are paid and the plates handed in. The general conditions are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the two methods are detailed on the container car shipping and RoRo shipping pages.
A full or a shared container to Dakar?
The difference between them lies in who shares the container with you and who opens it. A full one is sealed in front of you in Jeddah and its seal is broken in front of your consignee or his clearing agent. A shared one gathers the goods of several shippers, is then unloaded in a warehouse at the port of Dakar, and each shipment is handed to its owner.
| Point of comparison | Full container | Shared container |
|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | From 15 cubic metres upwards | From one cubic metre to 15 |
| How it is charged | One rate for the container | A rate per cubic metre |
| Door-to-door time | 30–42 days | 35–45 days |
| Cars | Accepted, alone or with goods | Cars are not loaded in it |
| Cargo tracking note | One for the container | One for each shipper |
| Price | Set on request | Set on request |
Packing and storage before shipping
Packing for this journey is planned around three risks: repeated lifting by cranes, five weeks of vibration at sea, and the damp salt air of the Atlantic coast. Cartons are double-walled and bound with wide tape, and they are stacked on heat-treated pallets bearing the ISPM 15 stamp. Glass and appliances are wrapped in bubble wrap and foam and placed in timber crates. Fabrics are pressed into bales wrapped in plastic and then in hessian. Moisture-absorbing bags are hung inside the container, and every gap is filled so that the load does not move.
Anyone buying in batches or waiting for a vessel can deposit goods in our warehouse in Jeddah. Each batch is recorded with its number of packages and weight, and the container is loaded once the order is complete. The storage period and its charge are written in the price. The packing method is on the packing guide and packing and lashing pages, and the deposit conditions on the storage page.
Shipping furniture and returnees’ belongings to Senegal
A returning Senegalese resident usually ships the fridge, washing machine, air conditioner and television, with bedding, kitchenware and clothes, and a little wooden furniture. Senegalese customs exempt a returnee’s used belongings on conditions, the main one being that they have been in his possession and in use for at least six months. The practice is also that the exemption covers one of each main appliance, so a second fridge is treated as merchandise.
The file is prepared before the shipment, not with it. The inventory is written in French, states the value of every item, and is dated and signed by its owner. With it go the certificate of change of residence, an undertaking not to sell the belongings, and invoices for electrical appliances and anything bought in the last six months. The file is expected to reach the clearing agent about two weeks ahead of the vessel. These are conditions set by customs there and they may change, so we verify those in force before loading. Preparing the items is explained on the furniture shipping page.
Pilgrims’ luggage, parcels and express services
In the Hajj and Umrah seasons demand for shipping excess luggage rises. We collect it from the mission’s accommodation in Jeddah or Makkah and write on each suitcase the owner’s name, his phone number in Senegal and his city. Those with few items send them by air, so that they arrive just ahead of him or a few days after, and those who have bought a lot add them to a shared container that arrives about a month after his return. Please note that Zamzam water is not shipped as cargo.
There are two services for urgent items. Door-to-door express for a parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110 and for an envelope of documents of up to one kilogram from SAR 83, arriving within a few days including clearance. And air freight by the kilogram for anything heavier. Every parcel entering Senegal is assessed by customs however small its value, so write the contents and the value as they are. Details are on the parcel shipping page.
The cargo tracking note and customs clearance in Dakar
Clearance in Dakar rests on a document particular to West African states: the cargo tracking note, abbreviated BSC. It is an electronic registration of the shipment with the Senegalese shippers’ council, for which the bill of lading, the commercial invoice and the freight invoice are uploaded. The rule that distinguishes Senegal is that the number of this note has to appear on the original bill of lading itself. For that reason we obtain it in Jeddah before the final bill of lading is printed, not after the vessel has sailed.
On arrival the approved clearing agent lodges the declaration through the customs electronic single window. Senegal applies the common external tariff of the West African states, which comes in bands: exempt for essential goods, then 5%, 10% and 20%, and 35% for certain consumer goods. On top comes value added tax at 18%, a statistical fee and other small charges.
| Type of shipment | Documents |
|---|---|
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading bearing the BSC number, the importer’s prior import declaration, inspection certificate where required |
| Car or truck | Registration document showing the year of manufacture, the export certificate issued by the traffic department, the invoice for buying the car, the owner’s ID, a bill of lading bearing the BSC number |
| Returnee’s belongings | Passport, certificate of change of residence, valued French inventory, undertaking not to sell, appliance invoices, original bill of lading |
| Food and dates | The commercial goods documents plus a health certificate and a label in French |
| Shipment in transit to a neighbouring country | The goods documents with the final country stated on the bill of lading and the cargo tracking note |
| Parcel or air shipment | Copy of ID, statement of contents and value, an invoice for a commercial parcel |
See the shipping documents page for what each paper looks like, and the customs clearance page for what happens between the quay and the port gate.
What cannot be shipped from Jeddah to Senegal, or needs a permit
Before the cartons are closed, check your list against this table. Some items are banned in both countries, some enter with a licence, and some are accepted by sea and refused by air.
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Vehicle over the age limit for its category | Not shipped, as it will not be released |
| Motorcycle up to 50 cc | Import prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and narcotics | Prohibited |
| Counterfeit branded goods | Seized and destroyed |
| Medicines and medical preparations | With an import licence, and personal quantities with a prescription |
| Food and dates | With a health certificate, a visible expiry date and a French label |
| Perfumes, aerosols and lithium batteries | By sea with a dangerous goods declaration, by air under strict limits |
| Cash, gold and original documents | Not placed in a container or a parcel |
| Zamzam water | Not shipped as cargo |
The full list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering shipments from Jeddah in Dakar, Thiès, Saint-Louis and Touba
After release the shipment leaves the port on a truck for the address written in the order. In Dakar we deliver in Plateau, Médina, Parcelles Assainies, Pikine, Guédiawaye and Rufisque, and to the wholesale markets and the warehouses of the industrial zone. Outside the capital four destinations recur: Thiès on the motorway to the east, Touba in the centre with a large market used by traders from the regions, Saint-Louis at the mouth of the Senegal River in the north, and Kaolack on the road to Mali.

| City | Approximate distance from Dakar | Delivery |
|---|---|---|
| Dakar and its suburbs | Within the urban area | To the warehouse or the home, or collection from the port |
| Thiès | About 70 km | A truck on the day of release or the day after |
| Mbour | About 80 km | A truck on the day of release or the day after |
| Touba | About 190 km | A truck, avoiding the days of the Grand Magal |
| Kaolack | About 190 km | A truck after clearance |
| Saint-Louis | About 260 km | A truck after clearance |
| Ziguinchor and Tambacounda | 450 km and more | On a longer schedule to be agreed |
A full container is delivered on its truck, unloaded by the consignee and returned empty to the shipping line, or it is unloaded in the port and the goods are moved by an ordinary truck if the street is too narrow. A small shipment is handed over against a signature and a check of the number of packages. From Dakar, containers transit to Mali by road on the Bamako route and to The Gambia along the coastal road, with the final country written in the documents in Jeddah. The destination pages: shipping to Senegal, shipping to Mali and shipping to The Gambia. What the full service means is on the door-to-door shipping page.
Air freight from Jeddah to Senegal
When a shipment cannot wait six weeks, it goes by aircraft. We hand the parcel to the cargo building at King Abdulaziz International Airport, where it is weighed, X-rayed and given a space. The flying distance between the two cities is about 6,000 km, and the shipment usually passes through an intermediate airport before landing at Blaise Diagne International Airport. The airport is at Diass, about 50 km outside Dakar, so we allow for the drive to the capital along with clearance. This service is for urgent parcels and samples: a fabric sample a buyer is waiting for, a spare part for a vehicle off the road, medicine with its prescription, a pilgrim’s suitcase.

| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Departure airport | King Abdulaziz International Airport, Jeddah |
| Arrival airport | Blaise Diagne International Airport, Diass near Dakar |
| Transit time | 4–7 days door to door |
| Price | Starts from SAR 28 a kilogram, and the rate per kilo falls in the heavier bands |
| Express parcel and documents | From SAR 110 up to 5 kg, and from SAR 83 for the envelope |
| Delivery | In Dakar to the address, and to other cities by additional arrangement |
| Not accepted by air | Cars and heavy goods, and perfumes and batteries unless specially packed and declared |
An aircraft charges for volume as much as for weight. A large light carton is priced on its volumetric weight, so compress clothes and keep cartons as small as you can. Work out the chargeable weight of your shipment with the volumetric weight calculator. The service is explained on the air freight page, and handing over at the airport in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Collection from Jeddah districts and nearby cities
We send the collection vehicle to wherever the shipment is: a shop in the market, a supplier’s warehouse, a flat, or a Hajj mission’s accommodation. Goods bought from several shops are gathered in one round.
| Area | Examples | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Historic central Jeddah | Al-Balad, Bab Makkah, Bab Sharif, Al-Kandarah, Al-Hindawiyah | Fabric and perfume markets, with collection by small carts in the alleys |
| South Jeddah | Ghulail, Al-Khumrah, Al-Mahjar, the industrial area | Wholesale warehouses, spare parts shops and car showrooms |
| East Jeddah | Al-Jamiah, Bani Malik, As-Safa, Kilo 14 | Housing of African communities and returnees’ belongings |
| North Jeddah | Al-Hamdaniyah, Obhur, Al-Murjan, Taybah | Flats and villas, at a time fixed to the hour |
| Makkah | About 80 km | Hajj and Umrah pilgrims’ luggage from hotels and lodgings |
| Taif, Bahrah and Al-Lith | 80–200 km | A closed truck by prior appointment |
| Madinah and Yanbu | 330–420 km | Visitors’ luggage and Madinah dates, with a surcharge written in the price |
The other cities we collect from are on the cities page.
Shipping steps and how to contact us
- You write to us with what you want to ship and the Senegalese city, attaching photographs or a pro forma invoice.
- We settle the most suitable method and check prohibited items, the car age limit and whether the goods need inspection.
- You receive the price written item by item, with the date of the nearest vessel or flight.
- We collect the shipment, pack it and number its packages, and give you a report of their count.
- The container is loaded and sealed, we lodge the export declaration, and it enters Jeddah Islamic Port.
- We obtain the cargo tracking note and fix its number on the bill of lading before its final issue.
- The vessel sails, and we send the documents to the clearing agent in Dakar before it arrives.
- The shipment is cleared and moved to the warehouse or the home, and the consignee signs for it.
There are three channels for contact: the phone on 0552803439 for anyone wanting an answer straight away, WhatsApp on the same number for sending photographs and lists, and the request form on the site for those who prefer to write. So that our reply is accurate the first time, state four things: the type of goods, their volume or number of cartons, the collection point in Jeddah, and the delivery city. After booking, put the order number at the start of every message. The methods are compared on the shipping methods comparison page.
Tracking the shipment and insuring it
Tracking on this line is by container number on the shipping line’s website, and we give you the number and the link with the bill of lading. There you will see the container loaded in Jeddah, its arrival at the transhipment port, its loading on the second vessel and its berthing in Dakar. What the website does not show, we tell you ourselves: the date of the customs examination, payment of the duties, and the truck leaving the port.
Cargo insurance is optional, and its premium is a small percentage of the declared value. It covers loss and damage in transit under the terms of its policy, and it does not cover poor packing done by the sender himself or undeclared items. We advise it for cars, appliances and commercial goods. We answer your enquiries from 7 am to 11 pm Jeddah time, and Senegal is three hours behind. The two services are on the track your shipment and cargo insurance pages.
Guarantees, cancellation terms and privacy
We do not promise what is not ours to give. The sailing date belongs to the shipping line and the clearance time belongs to customs, so we do not write a guaranteed arrival date. What we do commit to is written in the agreement: the number of packages collected and their condition in photographs, the services included and where they end, the price item by item, and telling you of every delay as soon as we learn of it. If a package arrives short or damaged, that is recorded in the delivery report before signing, and it is the basis of any claim.
The cancellation terms are written in the booking confirmation before you pay, so you know in advance what is refundable at each stage. As a general rule, anything paid to another party in the name of your shipment, such as the vessel booking or the cargo tracking note, follows that party’s terms. Goods found to be prohibited are returned to their owner in Jeddah before loading. Your details, copies of your ID and your invoices are used only to prepare the shipping and clearance documents, and are given only to the parties that require them by law: customs, the shipping line and the clearing agent. We comply with Saudi export and Senegalese import regulations, so we do not ship a prohibited item even if its owner insists.

Demand in the reverse direction is lower, and most of it comes from Saudis who have finished work in Dakar and from importers bringing Senegalese products such as processed groundnuts, dried fish, handicrafts and printed fabrics. Our agent collects the shipment there and loads it in a container at the port of Dakar, or sends it by air. On arrival we clear it at Jeddah Islamic Port or the airport and deliver it. The price for this direction is set on request.
Tips before and during shipping
- Ask your consignee in Dakar about his clearing agent before you buy, and give us the name and number.
- Ask every shop for an invoice in one name with the true value, as customs compare prices with their own lists.
- Write the packing list in French in Jeddah, and number the cartons in the same order.
- Do not mix commercial goods with personal effects on one list, as each has its own customs treatment.
- Send the original bill of lading by courier as soon as it is issued, and do not wait for the vessel to draw near.
- During the sailing, check the container number once a week and tell your consignee the expected berthing date.
- Keep the Senegalese consignee’s phone switched on during the clearance days, as the agent may need his signature within the hour.
How do you choose a shipping company from Jeddah to Senegal?
Published reviews help if you read them with a critical eye. Look in them for someone who shipped to West Africa specifically, and see what he said about three things: whether the full count arrived, whether the final price matched what was first written, and how the company responded when the vessel was late. You will find them in map search results and on social pages, and ask a Senegalese trader who shipped before you, as he is the most reliable reference. Then test the company yourself with these questions:
| Question | Sign of knowing the line | Sign for caution |
|---|---|---|
| Who obtains the cargo tracking note? | We do, and its number is written on the bill of lading | “The consignee handles that after arrival” |
| How long does it take? | A range in weeks that mentions the transhipment port | One short figure with no explanation |
| Will my car be admitted? | Asks for the year of manufacture and checks the limit in force | Prices before asking about the age |
| What does the price include? | Written items and a clear end point | A verbal lump sum |
| Who clears in Dakar? | Names a clearing agent and gives you his number | “You will find someone to clear it there” |
| Is the establishment registered? | Sends the commercial registration number | Avoids the question |
Common mistakes when shipping from Jeddah to Senegal
- Issuing the final bill of lading before obtaining the cargo tracking note number.
- Relying on the old age limit for cars, or the new one, without checking which is in force on the day of shipping.
- Writing the invoice at less than the true value, so that customs revalue it and add a fine.
- Asking for release of personal effects with a copy of the bill of lading instead of the original.
- Putting perfumes or batteries in a container without declaring them as dangerous goods.
- Shipping two fridges or two televisions among a returnee’s belongings and expecting relief on both.
- Timing the container’s arrival in Touba for the week of the Grand Magal.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Jeddah to Senegal
How much does shipping from Jeddah to Senegal cost?
Four of our starting figures are fixed: SAR 2,800 for a saloon car by sea to the Dakar quay, SAR 28 for each kilogram by air, SAR 110 for an express parcel of no more than 5 kg and SAR 83 for an envelope of documents. Everything else, meaning both kinds of container and the cubic metre, depends on the sailing date and is set on request, so call 0552803439 and you will have it the same day.
How long does a container take from Jeddah port to the port of Dakar?
The sailing alone takes 20 to 30 days, including a stop at an intermediate port where the container moves to a vessel serving the West African coast. Once the collection days in Jeddah and the clearance days in Dakar are added, the time from your door to the consignee’s door is 30 to 45 days. A shared container sits at the upper end of that range.
What is the maximum age for a car entering Senegal?
The rule currently applied is ten years for private cars and for light commercial vehicles of up to 3.5 tonnes, and fifteen years for goods trucks heavier than that. The limit was eight years before, and it has changed more than once. That is why we ask for the year of manufacture and the date of first registration and check the decree in force before booking your car.
What is the cargo tracking note that Senegal requires?
It is an electronic document known by the letters BSC and supervised by the Senegalese shippers’ council. It is required for every sea shipment discharged in Dakar, even one in transit to a neighbouring country. Its number has to appear on the original bill of lading, and a missing number is the most common reason files are rejected. We obtain it in Jeddah as part of your shipment file.
Can I ship a car and spare parts in one container?
Yes, and it is the arrangement Dakar traders ask for most. The car is lashed by its four wheels at the front of the container, a timber partition is built behind it, and the cartons of parts and the tyres are stacked after that. The condition is that every item and its quantity is written on the packing list, because the container is opened in Dakar and its contents are checked against the paperwork.
Which Senegalese cities do you deliver to?
Dakar and its suburbs first, then Thiès and Mbour about an hour away, Touba and Kaolack in the centre, and Saint-Louis in the north. We also deliver to Ziguinchor and Tambacounda on a longer schedule. Delivery is to the trader’s warehouse or to a home, as written in the order, and the charge for inland transport is set on request.
Do you ship the luggage of Senegalese Hajj and Umrah pilgrims?
Yes. We take the suitcases and cartons from the accommodation in Jeddah or Makkah before the owner’s departure date, weigh them in front of him and hand over a receipt with their number. Light, urgent items fly from SAR 28 a kilogram, and larger quantities join a shared container. Zamzam water is not accepted among shipped goods.
What documents does someone returning to Senegal need for relief on his belongings?
The practice is: a copy of the passport, a certificate of change of residence, an inventory in French that is dated, valued and signed, an undertaking not to sell, invoices for electrical appliances and for anything bought in the last six months, and the original bill of lading. The file is expected to arrive about two weeks ahead of the shipment. We review the conditions in force with the clearing agent before loading.
Do my commercial goods need inspection before shipping?
Senegal runs an import verification programme under which many commercial goods are inspected before sailing or on arrival, depending on their value and type. The Senegalese importer, for his part, opens a prior import declaration. Send us the pro forma invoice and we will ask the clearing agent in Dakar whether your shipment falls under the programme before it is loaded.
Is there land freight from Jeddah to Senegal?
We do not offer a land service on this line. The route crosses the Red Sea and then the Sahara from its eastern side to its western side, and no regular trucks run on it whose schedule could be relied upon. The two practical options are the container from Jeddah Islamic Port and the aircraft from King Abdulaziz Airport.
How long does air freight from Jeddah to Dakar take?
From 4 to 7 days from collecting the parcel in Jeddah to delivering it in Dakar, a day or two of which is clearance. The shipment usually passes through an intermediate airport and lands at Blaise Diagne International Airport, which lies about fifty kilometres outside the capital, and is then driven to the consignee’s address.
How do I pay the freight charge?
By bank transfer to the establishment’s account, or in cash against a receipt voucher on the day of collection, and with the price we mention any electronic method available at the time of your order. The freight charge is paid in Jeddah in riyals. Senegalese customs duties and taxes, however, are paid by the consignee in Dakar in CFA francs through his clearing agent and do not pass through our account.
Can the container transit from Dakar to Mali or The Gambia?
Yes. The port of Dakar is a main sea outlet for Mali, and trucks leave it for Bamako on a road of more than 1,200 km. The country of final destination is written on the bill of lading and the cargo tracking note in Jeddah, so the container crosses under a transit guarantee and its duties are paid in its own country. A truck from Dakar reaches Banjul in a day.
What cannot be shipped to Senegal?
Vehicles over the age limit, small motorcycles with an engine capacity of no more than 50 cc, weapons and ammunition, narcotics and counterfeit goods. Medicines need a licence, and food needs a health certificate and a label in French. This list is revised, so send us your items before packing.
What happens if my shipment is damaged?
The damage is recorded in the delivery report before the consignee signs, and the package and the container seal are photographed. If the shipment is insured, we submit the claim to the insurer with the photographs, the inventory and the invoice, and it is settled under the policy. If it is not insured, liability is within the limits set by the bill of lading, which is why we advise insurance on a journey of more than a month.
