Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Norway, and what do they ship?
Most of those who ship to Norway are families moving to live there or to work in the energy sector, students, and Norwegians who have finished working in the Kingdom. Few ship their car, for a reason we explain in the car section.
| Shipper | What they ship | Most suitable method |
|---|---|---|
| A family moving its residence | Used home furniture and belongings | Full container or part load with the mover’s exemption |
| A seconded employee | Personal belongings and some furniture | A part load by sea, and what is needed first by air |
| A student | Cartons of clothes and books | Shared boxes by sea, and an urgent carton by air |
| A Norwegian returning home | Furniture, belongings and collectibles | Full container |
| A trader or exporter | Dates, Saudi products and industrial materials | Container or by the cubic metre, and air for samples |
| Someone sending a gift or document | A small parcel or papers | Express shipping door to door |
Route and transit time from Saudi Arabia to Norway
Norway lies in the far north of Europe, and large vessels from Asia and the Gulf do not call at its ports directly. The container is discharged at a major European port, then continues on a smaller vessel to Oslo or by truck from Sweden.
| Route | Sailing or flight time | Door to door | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea to Oslo with transshipment | 22–30 days | 32–45 days | Full containers |
| Sea to Gothenburg, then truck | 20–26 days | 32–42 days | When its sailing is sooner |
| Part load | 24–32 days | 38–45 days | Belongings and under 15 m³ |
| Air to Oslo | Hours | 3–6 days | Urgent and light belongings |
What lengthens the time?
- Transshipment: waiting for the feeder vessel at the intermediate port may add days.
- Waiting for consolidation: a part load waits for the shared container to fill.
- Your own arrival: belongings are cleared after you enter Norway and register, not before.
- Winter: mountain passes close or run in convoys.
- Holidays: July is a holiday month in Norway, and work is slower.
- Customs inspection: adds days if the container is selected for examination.
Cost of shipping from Saudi Arabia to Norway
The price is set by the method, the volume and the Norwegian city. These are the starting prices of our services, and you receive your shipment’s price the same day if you send its details to 0552803439.
| Service | Price starts from |
|---|---|
| Furniture and belongings, part load by sea | SAR 5,500 |
| Full home furniture container | SAR 11,000 |
| Air freight per kg | SAR 23 |
| Express parcel up to 5 kg | SAR 110 |
| Express documents up to 1 kg | SAR 83 |
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| The route | Direct to Oslo, or via Gothenburg |
| Transport inside Norway | Mountain roads and ferries, so the west coast and the north cost more |
| Packing | A separate item, and essential for a cold, humid voyage |
| Insurance | Optional, a percentage of the value |
How do you lower the cost?
- Dismantle beds, tables and wardrobes; volume is what you pay for.
- Do not ship new items in their boxes; you will pay 25% tax on top of the freight.
- Do not ship large old appliances; homes there are usually let with their appliances.
- Ship a part load if your volume is under 15 cubic metres.
- Avoid winter delivery to west-coast cities if you can.
Sea freight to Norway: full container or part load?
Sea freight is the basis for anything large. The first question is whether you fill a container or share one.
| Comparison | Part load | 20ft container | 40ft container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Suitable volume | Up to 15 m³ | 15–28 m³ | 30–60 m³ |
| Suits | A student’s belongings, one or two rooms | A two- to three-room flat | A villa, or furniture with a car |
| Charged | Per cubic metre | A price per container | A price per container |
| Time | Longer because of consolidation | Shorter | Shorter |
| Humidity protection | By packing each item | Moisture-absorbing bags for the whole container | Moisture-absorbing bags for the whole container |
If your volume is close to 15 cubic metres, compare both prices; a full container may be cheaper and safer. Container dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the method is detailed on the sea freight page.
Shipping via Gothenburg to Oslo

Gothenburg in Sweden is the largest port in the north, and its services from Jeddah are more frequent and sooner than Oslo’s. It is 290 km from Oslo by motorway.
- Transit: the shipment leaves the Swedish port under a transit document, and no European Union charges are paid on it.
- Clearance: in Norway, at the border or in Oslo.
- When we choose it: when its sailing is ahead of the vessel bound for Oslo.
The paperwork is the same for you on either route. The only difference is the date, and we compare the two on booking day and choose the earlier arrival.
Norwegian customs and the exemption for those moving their residence

Norway is not a member of the European Union, so its exemption conditions differ from its neighbours’:
- Residence abroad: at least one continuous year outside Norway.
- Ownership and use: you must have owned and used the belongings during your stay abroad.
- What it covers: used furniture and personal and household belongings.
- What it does not cover: cars, food, alcohol and tobacco, work equipment, and new items in their boxes.
- Time limit: belongings are brought in within a year of your move to Norway.
- Declaration: the removal goods form with a list of contents and proof of previous residence.
The difference from Sweden: in the European Union a mover’s car enters exempt with the furniture. In Norway it does not: the car’s taxes are paid even if you are moving your residence.
We prepare the list of contents in English during packing, carton by carton, and separate new from used in it so the whole exemption is not held up by one item. Customs procedures are on the customs clearance page.
Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Norway
We ship a car to Norway in a container, but we start with the sums, not the booking. Car taxes there are unlike those of any neighbouring country.
- VAT: 25% on the value of the car and its freight.
- One-off registration tax: calculated on the car’s weight and emissions. For a petrol 4×4 it may exceed the price of the car itself.
- Age reduction: the registration tax falls with the car’s age by set percentages.
- Electric cars: taxed far more lightly, which is why they are so common there.
- Inspection: a technical inspection by the roads administration before plates, and winter tyres in season.
A worked example: a car worth SAR 60,000 with freight of SAR 2,800.
| Item | Calculation | Amount |
|---|---|---|
| Value with freight | 60,000 + 2,800 | SAR 62,800 |
| VAT 25% | 62,800 × 25% | SAR 15,700 |
| Registration tax | On weight and emissions | Calculated per car, and the largest item |
Our frank advice: work out the registration tax before anything else. Most people who ask us about shipping their car to Norway decide against it after doing the sums. Better-suited destinations are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Shipping furniture and belongings to Norway
Furniture is what we ship most to Norway. The voyage is long and cold, so packing is no mere detail.
- Humidity: the container goes from Jeddah’s heat to the cold of the North Sea, so water condenses inside it. We place moisture-absorbing bags and keep cartons away from the walls.
- Wood and leather: wrapped in paper and blankets, not in airtight plastic that traps moisture.
- Wooden crates: of heat-treated wood with the international stamp.
- Appliances: dried completely before packing. The plug there differs from Saudi Arabia’s.
- Inventory: numbered, and distinguishing used from new.
All the methods are in the packing guide, and the service is detailed on the furniture shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods to Norway
Norway is a small, high-income market, and its customs are independent of the European Union. Goods cleared in Germany or Sweden do not enter it without Norwegian clearance.
- Importer number: the importer needs a Norwegian organisation number registered with customs.
- Tax: 25% VAT on most goods, and a lower rate on food.
- Duties: most industrial goods carry no customs duty; food and clothing do.
- Certificate of origin: there is a free trade agreement between the Gulf states and the European Free Trade Association, of which Norway is a member. A correct certificate of origin may lower the duty on a Saudi product.
- Food: animal products under strict health conditions, and plant products with a clear label.
Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Documents required for shipping to Norway
| Type of shipment | Documents |
|---|---|
| Belongings and furniture | Passport, residence permit, the removal goods form, a list of contents, and proof of a year’s residence abroad |
| A car | Registration, export certificate, purchase invoice, and weight and emissions data |
| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and the importer’s Norwegian organisation number |
| Parcels and gifts | A description of the contents and their value, and the consignee’s address and mobile number |
The documents are explained on the required documents page.
What cannot be shipped to Norway or needs a permit
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Meat, dairy and their products | Prohibited from outside the European area |
| Alcohol and tobacco | Very tight limits and high taxes, and not part of the belongings exemption |
| Medicines | Personal quantities with a prescription |
| Plants, seeds and potatoes | With a certificate, or prohibited |
| Weapons and knives | Strict rules |
| Counterfeits | Confiscated |
| Perfumes and batteries | Conditional by air; shipped by sea |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivery in Norwegian cities

Norway’s geography is mountains and fjords, so distance on the map does not equal time on the road. The 460 km to Bergen takes a full day by truck.
| City | Distance from Oslo | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Oslo and Drammen | Up to 45 km | On clearance day or the next |
| Kristiansand | About 320 km | Coastal road |
| Stavanger | About 450 km | Mountain road and tunnels |
| Bergen | About 460 km | Crosses the mountains, and may close in winter |
| Trondheim | About 490 km | To the north |
| Tromsø | About 1,640 km | The far north, or by sea along the coast |
In winter some mountain passes close or run in convoys, so we set the date with road conditions in mind. Destination details are on the shipping to Norway page.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Norway

Air freight from Jeddah and Riyadh to Gardermoen Airport in Oslo delivers the shipment in 3 to 6 days, with a stop at an intermediate airport. It cuts six weeks at sea to under a week.
- For whom: winter clothes and what a mover needs on arrival, and documents and samples.
- Calculation: by chargeable weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: starts from SAR 23 per kg, and falls as the weight rises.
- Service: to the airport, or to the consignee’s door with clearance.
- What it does not suit: large furniture, which costs several times more by air than by sea.
Details are on the air freight page and in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Collection from the Kingdom’s cities
| Your city | Sea freight | Air freight |
|---|---|---|
| Jeddah, Makkah and Taif | Jeddah Islamic Port directly | King Abdulaziz Airport |
| Riyadh and Qassim | Truck to Jeddah port | King Khalid Airport |
| Dammam, Khobar and Jubail | Truck to Jeddah port, or from Dammam port | King Fahd Airport |
| Madinah, Tabuk and Abha | Truck to Jeddah port | Jeddah airport |
We pack and load at your location wherever you are. Jeddah port is the nearest to Europe because it lies on the Suez Canal route. The cities we serve are on the cities page.
Storage before shipping
Belongings are not cleared in Norway before you arrive. If you hand over your home in the Kingdom some time before you travel, we store your shipment in a closed warehouse in Jeddah, packed and inventoried, and load it on the date that makes it arrive after you, not before. Details are on the storage page.

Shipping from Norway to Saudi Arabia
We also ship in the opposite direction through our agent there: the furniture of returning students and families, purchases, and commercial goods. A car coming to the Kingdom is subject to Saudi import conditions on age and specifications, so ask before you buy it. Commercial goods need a Saudi conformity certificate before shipping.
How do you choose a shipping company to Norway?
| What to ask about | Reassuring sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Customs | Knows it is outside the European Union | Treats it like Sweden |
| The car | Warns you about the registration tax before booking | Mentions freight only |
| The exemption | Asks whether you have completed a year abroad | “No customs” without asking |
| The route | Compares Oslo with Gothenburg | One route for every shipment |
| Delivery | Allows for mountain roads and winter | Promises a fixed date in Bergen in winter |
| The price | Itemised | A lump sum |
Common mistakes when shipping to Norway
- Assuming it is like Sweden: its customs are independent and its exemption does not cover the car.
- Shipping a car without calculating the registration tax.
- Putting new appliances in their boxes among the belongings: tax is paid on them.
- Animal food products in the cartons.
- A winter delivery date in Bergen with no margin for mountain roads.
- A vague list of contents.
- A shipment that arrives before its owner: it waits at the port and storage charges build up.

How much is customs on a car in Norway?
25% VAT and a one-off registration tax calculated on weight and emissions, among the highest car taxes in the world.
Does the shipment reach Norway directly?
To the Port of Oslo with transshipment at a European port, or to Gothenburg in Sweden and then 290 km by truck to Oslo.
