Who ships from Jeddah to France, and what do they ship?

Jeddah is a city of port, trade and travel, and its ties with France are older than those of other cities in the Kingdom: it has a French consulate, a French school and a community working in hotels, contracting and energy; students leave it for the universities of Paris, Lyon and Montpellier; and families own flats on the Riviera where they spend the summer. Each of these has a shipment of a different shape and a different route:

Shipper What they ship Best method Status at French customs
A French national returning after a work contract in Jeddah Household furniture, appliances and sometimes a car 20ft or 40ft container Relief for transfer of main residence
A student travelling to study Suitcases and cartons of clothes and books Cartons in a shared container, and a suitcase by air Student effects relief with proof of enrolment
A Saudi family moving for work or long-term treatment Personal effects and some furniture Shared container The relief if the residence conditions are met
The owner of a summer flat in Nice or Cannes Majlis seating, carpets and ornaments Shared or full container Duty and 20% tax
The trader and exporter Dates, oriental perfumes, textiles and samples Container for volumes, air for samples Duty by European tariff heading, plus tax
Someone sending a gift or a paper A small parcel or a document Express air According to the declared value

The shipping route from Jeddah to France and its duration

Jeddah’s advantage on this route is that it sits on the very same road. A vessel leaving its port heads north up the Red Sea, crosses the Suez Canal after roughly two days, then runs west across the Mediterranean to the French coast. Even so, sailing is not the whole journey, and anyone counting from the loading day in their district to the unloading day in their flat finds it looks like this for a full container:

Stage What happens Usual time
Survey, packing and loading in Jeddah Inventory, numbering, dismantling and loading the container 2–3 days
Export and waiting for the vessel Export declaration and handing the container to the quay 5–7 days
Sailing Red Sea, then Suez, then the Mediterranean 9–13 days
Discharge and French clearance Import declaration and the relief file, or payment of the tax 4–5 days
Delivery inside France From the port to the address, with unloading Two days

Those figures are for a container that is yours alone. A few cartons wait for companions in a shared container, a car waits for its vessel, and an urgent suitcase cuts all of that to days. So the time from Jeddah changes with the method:

Method Route Time from Jeddah to the door Suits
Full container to the south Jeddah port → Marseille Fos 22–30 days A whole house and wholesale goods
Full container to the north Jeddah port → Gibraltar → Le Havre 25–35 days Those living in and around Paris
Shared container Consolidated in Jeddah and sorted in a French warehouse 28–35 days Baggage and one or two rooms
Air King Abdulaziz Airport → Charles de Gaulle 3–6 days Suitcases, parcels, documents and samples

What lengthens the time?

  • Changing vessel at an intermediate port: not every sailing is direct, and some lines move the container to another vessel at a Mediterranean port, which adds days. We tell you the type of sailing on the booking day.
  • Rerouted vessels: when shipping lines avoid the Red Sea and sail round Africa, the voyage grows by a week or more, and we confirm the actual route before you pay.
  • An unfinished list: if your signature or the value estimates are missing, the customs officer at Fos returns it and yard days are charged to your container.
  • The Hajj season in Jeddah: the port, the airport and the roads leading to them are busier, so we book earlier.

Times for other destinations are on the transit times page.

Sea freight from Jeddah to France via Marseille

Sea freight from Jeddah to France via Marseille

The port of Marseille Fos is France’s largest port on the Mediterranean, and it is really two sites: the old city quays in Marseille itself, and the main container quays at Fos about 50 km to the west. Most containers arriving from the Red Sea are discharged at Fos, then leave by truck for the address. We chose it as the main gateway for Jeddah shipments because it is the first French quay a vessel reaches after Suez, so you do not pay for extra sailing days round Spain if your home is in the south.

In Jeddah the container needs no inland journey before the sea. It comes empty to the door of your home or warehouse, is loaded and sealed in front of you, then crosses the city to the port in its south-west within an hour or two. This is what containers carry to France:

  • 20ft container: about 28 cubic metres, enough for a two- or three-bedroom flat once its furniture is dismantled.
  • 40ft container: roughly twice that, for a villa or for furniture with a car in one container.
  • Full or shared container: a full one is booked for you alone, and in a shared one you pay only for the volume you occupy.
  • The alternative destination: Le Havre on the English Channel for an address in Paris, Normandy or the north, with 13 to 18 days of sailing.

How we work at the port on our side is explained in the article international sea freight from Jeddah, and the service is described on the sea freight page.

Shipping prices from Jeddah to France

The question about price is preceded by a question about the unit of charge. A suitcase and a parcel are charged by the kilogram, cartons and furniture by the cubic metre, a whole house by the container, and a car by its class. A Jeddah shipment is also free of an item that residents of inland cities pay, namely the long haul to the port. These are the figures our services start from on this route:

What you ship Method Price starts from
Suitcases, parcels and samples Air from King Abdulaziz Airport SAR 23 per kilogram
Documents up to one kilogram Express SAR 83
Parcel up to 5 kg Express SAR 110
Furniture and baggage Shared container by sea SAR 5,500
Full household furniture Full container SAR 11,000
Saloon car Sea from Jeddah port SAR 2,800
Cartons of personal effects By the carton in a shared container Set by the number of cartons
Commercial goods Container or by the cubic metre Set on request

Prices circulating in the market for this route are few and far apart. For small parcels by air, figures between SAR 1,100 and SAR 1,250 are published depending on the French city, and for large shipments and furniture by sea between SAR 3,200 and SAR 3,500 with no statement of what they include. Express courier firms mention about SAR 120 per kilogram for individuals and about SAR 40 for holders of business accounts, and international sending starts at some of them from SAR 250. European booking platforms list an express document from about 37 euros and a parcel from about 41 euros before tax. The gap between one figure and another usually comes from what is inside it: does it end at the airport or port, or does it cover clearance and delivery to the door?

What sets the price Its effect on a Jeddah shipment
Volume or weight Cubic metres by sea and chargeable weight by air. Estimate your volume with the CBM calculator
Arrival port Marseille Fos is a shorter sailing, and Le Havre is closer to Paris
Distance of the address from the port Nice and Lyon are near, and Bordeaux is further at about 650 km
Scope of service To the French port, or to inside the flat with clearance
Difficulty of delivery An upper floor with no lift, or an old street that needs a parking permit
Season Summer sees higher demand because students and families travel

How do you lower the cost?

  • Choose the port on the basis of your address, not the sea freight alone, because road haulage inside France is expensive.
  • Dismantle everything that can be dismantled; a wardrobe taken apart occupies a third of its standing volume.
  • Split your things: the urgent few by air, and the rest in the shared container.

For more detail, the pricing factors page goes through the items one by one, and the figures for containers leaving Jeddah port are gathered in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.

What sets shipping from Jeddah apart?

Anyone shipping to France from an inland city pays for reaching the sea before paying for the sea. Jeddah spares you that, because it has both gateways. The Islamic Port is the Kingdom’s largest port on the Red Sea, and most Western Region containers bound for Europe leave from it. The airport in the north of the city has daily direct flights to Paris. That changes practical things about the shipment:

  • Loading and delivery to the port on the same day: the container does not spend a night on the road, and no truck covers hundreds of kilometres.
  • Coastal humidity: Jeddah’s air is humid most of the year, so we place desiccant bags in the container and avoid wrapping wood directly in plastic.
  • Truck entry hours: on some roads and in some districts the movement of large trucks is regulated to set hours, so we arrange the container’s time around those in force.
  • Seasons: in Ramadan and Hajj the city is crowded because it is the gateway to Makkah, so we bring loading forward or push it past the peak days.

Our other services in the city are in the article international shipping companies in Jeddah.

Furniture and household goods shipping from Jeddah to France

The difference between a house in Jeddah and a flat in France is the first thing we think about. The villas of Obhur and Al-Muhammadiyah and the flats of Al-Shati are spacious, and their furniture is built for large rooms. A French flat, especially in the old buildings of Marseille, Nice and Paris, has a narrow staircase and a lift that holds two people. So we start the survey with a question about the French address: which floor, how wide is the door, and is there a lift in the building? On the answer we sort the furniture with you.

  • Sorting: what deserves the sea, what goes ahead of you by air, and what is sold in Jeddah because it will not get through the door there.
  • Dismantling: wardrobes, beds and dining tables are taken down to panels, with each piece’s screws in a bag taped to it.
  • Packing: blankets and corrugated paper for wood, and crates of heat-treated, stamped timber for mirrors, paintings and chandeliers.
  • The inventory in French: we write the list during packing, carton by carton, because French customs require it detailed and valued.
  • In France: unloading into the rooms and reassembling what was dismantled, and an external furniture lift that raises pieces to the window when the staircase will not take them.

The service is explained on the furniture shipping page, and protection methods in the packing guide.

A full container or a shared container?

The decision turns on volume, then time. Anyone filling more than half a small container gains by booking all of it, because it is sealed at their door and opened only at the consignee’s door. Anyone with a few cubic metres pays for their volume alone, and accepts that their things pass through two warehouses and arrive about a week later. This is the comparison on the Jeddah – Marseille Fos route:

Comparison Full container Shared container
You pay for The whole container, whatever is in it The cubic metres you occupy
Time from Jeddah to the door 22–30 days 28–35 days
Number of handlings One loading and one unloading Consolidation in Jeddah and sorting in France
Best for A house of three rooms or more, or furniture with a car Anything under 15 cubic metres
Price starts from SAR 11,000 SAR 5,500

If your volume falls between 13 and 16 cubic metres, ask for both prices together, as they often come close at that point and the full container is the safer one. Internal dimensions are on the container sizes page.

Shipping luggage and personal effects from Jeddah to France

Shipping luggage and personal effects from Jeddah to France

What we are asked for most on this route is not a whole house but suitcases and cartons: a student travelling to Montpellier with a year of clothes, a family spending three months in Nice, and an employee whose contract has ended going home with what he has gathered. They all ask the same question: by the carton or by the kilo? The answer is that the carton is the unit of the sea, the kilogram is the unit of the air, and the number of pieces tips the balance.

  • By the carton by sea: uniform five-ply cartons stacked in a shared container and charged by their number or their volume. Cheaper for ten cartons or more.
  • By the kilo by air: from SAR 23 per kilogram on the chargeable weight, for a suitcase or two that you need in your first week.
  • Inventory and numbering: every carton and every suitcase carries a number, matched by a line in the list giving the contents and approximate value.
  • Suitcases: wrapped in film and strapped, with no cash, gold or original document left inside.
  • The student: proof of enrolment at the university with the passport and visa is enough, since in current practice a student’s clothes, study items and used room furnishings are relieved.
  • The French address: building number, street, postcode, entrance door code, flat number and a French mobile number.

Rooms in French student residences are small, so do not ship what you will find no place for, and time the cartons to arrive a few days after you do, because the residence office does not accept deliveries for a student who has not moved in. How boxes are shipped is on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping appliances and parcels from Jeddah to France

A small parcel leaves Jeddah by air and is delivered in any French city within days. The most common contents are Eid gifts, dates, coffee and spices for someone missing the taste of home, phones and laptops, and spare parts. An electronic device has two concerns: protection from impact, and a correct declaration of its value, because French customs calculate the tax on the written value plus the freight.

  • Price: from SAR 110 for a parcel up to 5 kg, from SAR 83 for documents, and by the kilogram above that.
  • Devices: in their original box if available, otherwise in a double-wall carton with foam on all six sides.
  • Batteries: a device with its battery inside is accepted by air on conditions, while a loose battery and a power bank are not.
  • Electricity in France: 230 volts at 50 hertz and a round two-pin socket, so put a plug adaptor with the device and check the frequency label.
  • A present from a Jeddah family to a relative in France: it passes untaxed as long as its value stays within 45 euros under current practice, and we recheck the figure in force on the sending day.

Shipping commercial goods and merchandise from Jeddah to France

Jeddah is an old wholesale market and an export outlet for the factories of the Western Region, and from it go to France dates from Madinah and Qassim, oud, incense and oriental perfumes, abayas and textiles, and food products for the shops serving Arab communities in Marseille and Lyon. Commercial goods enter in the name of a French importer holding a European customs identification number, and whatever is cleared in France then moves between the Union’s states with no further customs.

Item Shipping method What it needs in France
Dates and date products Dry or refrigerated container A label in French and a certificate of origin
Oud, incense and perfumes Sea, and air under the limits on flammable liquids A cosmetic product file and a responsible person inside the Union
Textiles and abayas Cartons on pallets A fibre-composition label and country of manufacture
Processed foods Dry container Ingredients in French, and strict health conditions for anything of animal origin
Samples and exhibition items Air A sample invoice, or a temporary admission carnet for what will return

In Jeddah we prepare the commercial invoice, the packing list and the certificate of origin, and we make sure the pallets are of treated, stamped timber so they are not turned back at the French port. A regular exporter gets a standing booking on the vessels and an agreed price for the season. Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Car shipping from Jeddah to France

A car ships from Jeddah by sea only, and its air freight suits nothing but racing and show cars. It is handed over at the port once its plates have been dropped and its export certificate issued, then travels in one of two ways. But the real decision is not about the shipping method; it is about what comes after: the charges and conformity in France decide whether it is worth it.

Method How it works Suits
Car carrier The car is driven up a ramp into the vessel’s deck and secured by its wheels, and travels empty An ordinary running car; the cheapest option
20ft container Tied down with straps and timber chocks, and the container is sealed Luxury and classic cars and non-runners
40ft container A car with the household furniture in one container Someone returning to France with home and car

A saloon starts from SAR 2,800 from Jeddah port, and a four-wheel drive costs more because the freight is charged on volume. The arrival port of car carriers is set by their schedule on the booking day, and it may not be the container port itself. In France, current practice is a 10% customs duty on the value of the car plus its freight, then 20% value added tax on the total, unless it comes in under the transfer-of-residence relief. After that come the customs certificate for vehicles, then an individual approval for a Gulf-specification car, then an environmental tax at first registration that rises steeply with large engines. We work these items out with you before booking and check which rules are in force. General conditions are in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia, and the two methods on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.

French customs and the transfer-of-residence relief

France applies the European Union’s common customs system and adds 20% value added tax on most goods, calculated on the value of the shipment plus its freight and insurance. The exception that matters most to anyone shipping baggage and furniture: a person moving their main place of residence to France brings in their used belongings exempt. These are its conditions as applied by French customs, and we go over those in force with you before loading:

Condition Detail
Previous residence At least 12 months outside the European Union before the move
Use of the belongings At least 6 months before the move, so new items in their boxes do not qualify
Deadline for entry Within 12 months of the date residence is transferred, and more than one shipment is allowed
The list A detailed inventory with approximate values, dated and signed, in two copies, covering everything that will follow later
After entry Not sold, rented out or lent for 12 months
What it does not cover Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and non-portable trade equipment
A second home or holiday home Outside the relief, with duty and tax payable

The point many overlook is that the first inventory must mention everything you intend to bring in, even if it comes in a second shipment months later. Someone who sends suitcases by air today and furniture by sea two months on writes both in the same list from the start.

Documents required for shipping from Jeddah to France

The shipment file is built in Jeddah and read in France. Every paper missing here turns into days of waiting in the port yard there, with storage charged to the container’s owner. We ask for the papers at booking, not at loading, and review them before the truck moves:

Type of shipment Documents Note
Baggage and furniture of someone moving residence Passport, signed inventory, the personal effects entry form, proof of previous residence in the Kingdom, and proof of accommodation in France The name on the bill of lading as in the passport
Student baggage Passport and visa, university enrolment certificate, and contents list Full residence address with the door code
Commercial goods Invoice, packing list, bill of lading and origin certificate, plus the EU customs identification number held by the importer Extra certificates for foods and cosmetics
Car Registration, export certificate, passport, purchase invoice, and chassis number Registration rules are checked before shipping
Parcel or gift Sender’s ID, and a statement of the items and their value A French mobile number for the consignee

For proof of previous residence, a registered tenancy contract or a letter from the employer is enough. Each paper is explained on the shipping documents page, and the release steps on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to France or needs a permit

In France two categories land a traveller from the Gulf in trouble without any intent. The first is counterfeits: possessing a fake bag or watch is an offence there, for which the piece is seized and a fine imposed. The second is food of animal origin: a tin of ghee or cheese in the kitchen carton is enough to have the whole shipment opened. We go through this list with you during the survey:

Item Ruling
Counterfeit goods, even for personal use Seized, with a fine
Meat, dairy, ghee and cheese Banned in personal baggage and parcels
Plants, seeds and soil With a phytosanitary certificate
Medicines A personal quantity with a prescription
Weapons, ammunition, daggers and ornamental swords Banned without a French licence
Ivory, coral and skins of protected animals Banned without the international convention certificate
Antiquities and valuable works of art Declared, with proof of their provenance attached
Perfumes, batteries and pressurised containers Restricted by air, and shipped by sea with their declaration
Zamzam water Not shipped as cargo; it stays with the traveller in its dedicated pack

The prohibited items page holds what is banned on every route. If an item leaves you in doubt, send its photo on WhatsApp and we tell you whether it travels or stays.

Delivery in Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux and other French cities

Delivery in Marseille, Nice and Bordeaux

Once the vessel berths, our agent in France takes over what remains: lodging the import declaration and the relief file, waiting for release, then agreeing the delivery day with the consignee. The order is fixed: clearance, then delivery. Marseille is the city closest to the quay, Nice lies on the coast to its east, and Bordeaux on the Atlantic in the far west is served by a truck that crosses the whole of the south. These are the approximate distances from Marseille:

City Approximate distance from Marseille Delivery note
Marseille and Aix-en-Provence Within the area, up to 30 km Old sloping districts and narrow streets that need a small vehicle
Montpellier About 170 km A university city, where most shipments are student baggage
Nice, Cannes and Antibes 180–200 km Flats on the Riviera, and a parking permit in the summer season
Lyon and Grenoble About 315 km One day after release
Toulouse About 400 km One to two days
Bordeaux and its surroundings About 650 km Two days, and we group western shipments in one run
Paris and the north About 775 km Better served by the port of Le Havre, about 200 km away

Delivery does not end at the pavement in front of the building. The crew carries the pieces up to the flat, assembles the beds and wardrobes, and takes the empty cartons away. Where the staircase is spiral and the lift small, an external furniture lift and a parking permit from the town hall are booked days ahead, so tell us the floor and the window width when you book. Destination information is on the shipping to France page.

Services for individuals, companies, government bodies, embassies and consulates

An individual customer wants one person who answers and a price that does not change. A company wants a tax invoice and a schedule on which to build its own customers’ dates. An official body wants a documented procedure that keeps what it ships confidential. Jeddah has consulates, missions and offices of French companies whose staff are transferred every few years, so we arrange the service for each group around its need:

Customer What they need What we provide
Individuals and families Moving baggage or a home without daily follow-up A survey, an itemised price, and one coordinator until delivery
Students A few cartons at low cost Cartons in a shared container and loading dates before term starts
Companies and factories Repeat shipments and disciplined paperwork An annual contract, a tax invoice, and a status report for every shipment
Government bodies and universities Exhibition equipment, printed matter and delegations Commitment to the event date, and return of what comes back afterwards
Embassies and consulates Baggage of transferred staff and official correspondence Coordination with the administrative section, numbered seals, and delivery against the named person’s signature only

The baggage of a diplomat or an international civil servant falls in France under a regime different from that of individuals, set by the foreign ministry there, so we ask for the body’s letter in the file and do not apply the ordinary relief conditions to it.

Air freight from Jeddah to France

Air freight from Jeddah to France

King Abdulaziz Airport has daily direct flights to Charles de Gaulle in Paris, lasting about six hours and forty minutes. That makes the air the route for urgent baggage and parcels from Jeddah. The shipment enters the airport’s cargo village in the north of the city, where it is weighed, measured and security-screened, then it is cleared in Paris and trucked to the address. The time from a Jeddah door to a Paris door is 3 to 6 days, with a day or two added for Marseille, Nice and Bordeaux.

  • For whom: students’ and travellers’ suitcases, urgent parcels, documents, commercial samples and spare parts.
  • Chargeable weight: we multiply the carton’s three dimensions in centimetres and divide the result by 6000, then take whichever is higher, that figure or the scale weight. Check your number in the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Rate: a kilogram to France from SAR 23, and the heavier the shipment the lower the per-kilo rate.
  • Scope of service: to the French airport for anyone with a clearing agent there, or delivery to the address with clearance.
  • What does not pass screening: loose batteries, alcohol-based perfumes in quantity, lighters and pressurised containers.
  • What it does not suit: household furniture and large appliances, whose air freight is many times the cost of a container.

The service is described on the air freight page, and how cargo is handed to the airport is in the article air freight office in Jeddah.

Sea, air and land freight to France compared

There are two practical routes. The sea is for what is measured in cubic metres, and the air for what is measured in kilograms or has a date that will not wait. Land we do not rely on for France: the road crosses many countries and several borders, and a sea container arrives sealed at lower cost and lower risk. Our road trucks work the Gulf and Jordan routes and their neighbours.

Comparison Sea Air Land
Time from Jeddah 22–35 days 3–6 days Not relied on for France
Exit point Jeddah Islamic Port King Abdulaziz Airport —
Unit of charge Cubic metre or container Kilogram on chargeable weight —
Best for Furniture, cars, heavy goods and many cartons Suitcases, documents and samples Gulf and Levant destinations only
Price starts from SAR 5,500 for a shared container SAR 23 per kilogram —

The extended comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Collection from Jeddah’s districts and nearby towns

Jeddah stretches along the coast for more than seventy kilometres from its south to North Obhur. We send the crew to all its districts: Al-Shati, Al-Muhammadiyah, Al-Naeem and Al-Basateen in the north, Al-Rawdah, Al-Zahra, Al-Salamah and Al-Hamra in the centre, Al-Safa, Al-Marwah and Al-Samer in the east, and Al-Balad, Al-Kandarah and Al-Aziziyah in the old centre. We also collect from the region’s towns and add their shipments to the Jeddah containers:

Place Approximate distance from Jeddah How we collect
Jeddah’s districts Inside the city From the door, with dismantling and packing on site
Al-Balad and the old districts City centre A small vehicle shuttles to the truck at the nearest wide street
Obhur and Dhahban Up to 50 km north Villas and compounds, with an entry permit from the management
Thuwal About 80 km Researchers’ housing at the university, by appointment and prior permit
Makkah About 80 km During the permitted truck entry hours, and Umrah pilgrims’ baggage from hotels
Taif About 170 km Added to a weekly run

The other cities we serve are on the service cities page.

Steps to book a shipment from Jeddah to France

  1. The request: you send what you are shipping, your district in Jeddah, and your French city and its postcode.
  2. Your standing before French customs: we ask whether you are relocating, studying, furnishing a summer flat or trading, and write that at the head of the file.
  3. Choosing the route and port: sea or air, and Marseille Fos or Le Havre according to your address.
  4. Survey and price: we estimate the volume or weight, and the price reaches you itemised line by line.
  5. Paperwork: we prepare the inventory, the relief form and the proofs of residence with you before the loading day.
  6. Packing and loading: dismantling and numbering at your home, you sign the inventory, and the container is sealed in front of you.
  7. Export and follow-up: the export declaration at Jeddah port or the airport, then you receive the container or waybill number.
  8. In France: the shipment is released, the agent then phones you to set the arrival day, and you sign once the pieces are assembled in place.

Tracking and insuring shipments to France

A container leaving Jeddah can be followed from your phone by its number on the shipping line’s website: when it sailed, when it crossed the canal, and when it berthed. But tracking tells you where the shipment is and does not protect it. The sea carrier’s liability is capped at sums that do not equal the value of one bedroom set, so insurance is what actually compensates.

  • Our messages: on entering the port, sailing, crossing Suez, berthing at Fos, release, and fixing the delivery date.
  • Insurance: optional, a percentage of the value written in the inventory, and it covers from the Jeddah door to the French door. Terms are on the cargo insurance page.
  • On receipt: open and inspect, and note any remark on the delivery note before you sign, because a claim is built on what was written at that moment.
  • How to follow it: on the track your shipment page.

Shipping from France to Jeddah

The route works in both directions. A student who has finished studying in Toulouse comes back with years of books and belongings, a family that spent the summer on the Riviera ships its purchases, and a trader imports perfumes, cosmetics and kitchenware. Our agent collects from the French address, gathers your purchases from several shops into one shipment, then sends it by the route you choose.

  • By air: to King Abdulaziz Airport, cleared and delivered in your district within days.
  • By sea: from Marseille Fos or Le Havre straight to Jeddah Islamic Port, with no road haul inside the Kingdom.
  • On arrival in Jeddah: what the returnee used in France is cleared as personal effects against an inventory, while new purchases are charged the item’s duty and the Saudi 15% value added tax.

If your shipment is coming from Belgium, Spain or Italy instead, see the article shipping from Saudi Arabia to Europe.

Home Safe’s tips before shipping to France

  • Write your French address the way it is written there, with the building’s door code, because the driver cannot get in without it.
  • Ask the flat’s landlord for the lift size and the staircase width before you decide to ship the sofas.
  • Do not let the container arrive in August if you can help it, as it is the holiday month in France.
  • Take out of the kitchen cartons anything with meat, milk or ghee, and out of the wardrobe anything counterfeit.

How do you choose a shipping company from Jeddah to France?

Jeddah has many shipping offices around the port and the airport, and their offers for the same shipment are far apart. The difference usually comes from items left unmentioned that later surface in France as a second invoice. Before you pay, ask these questions and compare the answers:

What you ask about A reassuring answer A worrying answer
Legal standing A commercial registration, a contract and a stamped receipt A transfer to a personal account with no contract
Arrival port Asks about your city, then names the port One port for every customer wherever they live
French customs Asks about your residence status and prepares the inventory with you “Used goods carry no customs”, with no questions
Time Separates sailing days from the time to the door “Ten days and it is with you”
Delivery Asks about the floor, the lift and the window width “To the door”, with no detail
Price Written items: what is in and what is not A flat figure from a single photo

Common mistakes when shipping from Jeddah to France

  • Booking a container to Le Havre when the address is in Nice, or to Marseille when the address is in the Paris suburbs.
  • Writing a first inventory that leaves out the second shipment, so the second one enters with tax.
  • Leaving a counterfeit bag among the clothes on the grounds that it is for personal use.
  • Shipping furniture bought weeks before travel and still boxed as part of the relieved belongings.
  • Shipping a large-engined car before working out the environmental tax and the cost of conformity.
  • Omitting the building’s door code and the French mobile number, so the driver returns with the shipment.
  • Comparing a price that ends at the Fos quay with a price that reaches the bedroom.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Jeddah to France

How much does shipping from Jeddah to France cost?

An air kilogram from King Abdulaziz Airport starts from SAR 23, express documents from SAR 83, and a parcel of no more than 5 kg from SAR 110. By sea from Jeddah port, furniture in a shared container starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house container from SAR 11,000 and a saloon car from SAR 2,800. Write to us with what you have and the name of your French city on 0552803439 and we reply with the figure for your own shipment.

How many days does a shipment need from Jeddah until it reaches France?

The vessel covers the stretch between Jeddah and Marseille Fos in 9 to 13 days, and a full container reaches an address in the south of France within 22 to 30 days of the loading day. A shared container needs 28 to 35 days because it is consolidated and then sorted. An air shipment is delivered within 3 to 6 days.

Why do you ship to Marseille Fos and not another port?

Because it is the first French port a vessel reaches after leaving the Suez Canal, so it does not sail round Spain to get there. From it Marseille, Nice, Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux are served by truck. For anyone living in Paris or the north we suggest the port of Le Havre, and we compare both transit times and both prices for them before booking.

Do I pay customs on my used belongings in France?

In current practice, anyone moving their main residence to France after at least 12 months outside the European Union brings in the belongings they have used for 6 months free of duty and tax, with a detailed signed inventory and the relief form. Anyone who does not meet the conditions pays a duty by item and 20% value added tax. We go over the rules in force with you before loading.

I have a flat in Nice where I spend the summer; is its furniture exempt?

No. The French relief is tied to moving the main place of residence, and a holiday home or second home falls outside it. The furniture for the flat enters with 20% value added tax and a duty that depends on each piece, and we estimate the approximate amount for you before you decide what ships from Jeddah and what is bought there.

Should I ship my bags by the carton or by the kilo?

It depends on the route. By sea, baggage is charged by the carton or by the cubic metre, which is cheaper for anyone with ten cartons or more. By air it is charged by the kilogram on the chargeable weight, which suits one or two urgent suitcases better. Many people split their things between the two routes.

Do you ship a car from Jeddah to France?

Yes, by sea from Jeddah port: on a car carrier if it runs under its own engine, or inside a sealed container if it is a luxury or classic car. A saloon starts from SAR 2,800. Before booking we work out with you the 10% customs duty, the 20% value added tax and the environmental tax, because together they are far larger than the sea freight.

Can my Gulf-specification car be registered in France?

It can be registered after three steps: paying the charges and obtaining the customs certificate for vehicles, then an individual approval from the competent regional authority because its specification is not European, then an environmental tax paid at first registration. Changes to the lighting and emissions may be required. We confirm the rules in force before shipping.

Will my electrical appliances work in France?

The supply in France is 230 volts at 50 hertz, and the socket is round with two pins and a protruding earth pin. An appliance that runs in Jeddah on 220–240 volts works there with a simple plug adaptor, but anything with a motor or compressor needs its label checked: if it reads 50/60 hertz there is no problem, and if it reads 60 only it is better not to ship it.

What should I take out of the cartons before they are sealed?

Meat, dairy, ghee and cheese even when tinned, any counterfeit bag or watch, medicines with no prescription, and plants and seeds. For air freight, alcohol-based perfumes, loose lithium batteries and pressurised containers come out as well.

Do you deliver to cities other than Marseille?

Yes. Nice, Cannes, Toulon, Aix-en-Provence, Montpellier, Lyon, Toulouse and Bordeaux are all served from Marseille Fos by truck. We also deliver to Paris, Lille, Nantes, Rennes and Strasbourg, for which the port of Le Havre is closer. Delivery is to the door of the flat in every case.

Can I ship dates and gifts from Jeddah to my family in France?

Yes. Packed dates, coffee, cardamom and spices are accepted in personal quantities. In current practice a gift sent from one individual to another is exempt if its value does not exceed 45 euros, and anything above that enters with tax. No ghee, cheese or dried meat goes in with the gift. We confirm the threshold in force before sending.

When do I hand over my things if I travel in two months?

For sea freight hand them over about five weeks before you travel, so they arrive while you are in France to sign for them. For air, a week before travel is enough. If your accommodation there is not ready yet, your things stay in our Jeddah warehouse until you send the address.

Is insurance included in the price?

No, it is a separate item that you choose, calculated as a percentage of the value you write against each piece in the inventory. We think it should be taken for full household furniture, a car, appliances and antiques, since the container is lifted by cranes in two ports and crosses two seas before it reaches your door.

Do you ship from France to Jeddah?

Yes. Our agent collects from the home, the student residence or the shop in France, and the shipment comes by air to King Abdulaziz Airport or by sea to Jeddah Islamic Port, then we deliver it in your district. A returning resident’s used baggage is cleared in the Kingdom as personal effects with a contents list.
