Who ships from Jeddah to Libya, and what do they ship?
Jeddah has a large Libyan community, car showrooms, wholesale markets and import warehouses, and its port is the Kingdom’s nearest to the Mediterranean. So it is the natural starting point for anyone shipping to Libya from the western region, and for many who ship from elsewhere. Shipments on this route fall into six types:
| Shipper | What they ship | Most suitable method |
|---|---|---|
| A returning Libyan family | A full home’s furniture and appliances | A 20ft or 40ft container loaded at the door |
| A car buyer | A car from a showroom, auction or owner | Dedicated or shared container, or RoRo |
| A showroom trader | Several cars per shipment | Shared containers on a regular schedule |
| Someone sending to family, or a pilgrim | Cartons, gifts and excess luggage | Consolidated freight, or air for urgent items |
| A trader or importer | Wholesale goods from Jeddah’s markets | Full container or part load by the cubic metre |
| A contractor or company | Trucks and project equipment | RoRo or flat-rack container |
Why is Jeddah the best point for shipping to Libya?
There are four practical reasons. The first is the port itself: Jeddah Islamic Port is the Kingdom’s largest on the Red Sea, and many lines bound for the Mediterranean call there, so there are more sailings and less waiting. The second is the route: the ship heads north straight to the Suez Canal and does not sail round the Arabian Peninsula as ships leaving the Gulf do, which saves days. The third is that a shipment in Jeddah is kilometres from the quay, so the inland haulage line almost disappears from the bill. The fourth is King Abdulaziz International Airport for anything urgent.
| Comparison | Shipping from Jeddah | Shipping from an inland city or the Gulf |
|---|---|---|
| Haulage to the port | Within the city | Hundreds of kilometres by road |
| Sea route | Direct to Suez | From the Gulf it sails round the Arabian Peninsula |
| Loading the container | At the door of your home or warehouse | At the port or after a long haul |
| Full-container time | 14–30 days | Longer by days to a week |
Shipping methods from Jeddah to Libya and how long each takes
The choice between the three methods follows what you ship, not what you prefer. Heavy and bulky goes by sea, light and urgent by air, and what lies between may suit land. These times are from your door in Jeddah, not from the moment of sailing:
| Method | Approximate time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sea, full container | 14–30 days | Cars, a full home’s furniture, and commercial containers |
| Sea, consolidated part load | 20–40 days | Cartons and small shipments that are not urgent |
| RoRo for vehicles | 15–30 days | Running cars, trucks and equipment |
| Land across Egypt | 10–20 days | Medium furniture loads, refrigerated goods, and eastern Libyan cities |
| Air | 2–7 days | Documents, urgent spare parts and valuable electronics |
The sailing itself from Jeddah to the Libyan coast takes 10 to 20 days depending on the line and whether it changes vessel at an intermediate port. Add two to four days before sailing for loading and export, and the days of clearance at the Libyan port.
What lengthens the time?
- Waiting for consolidation: a shared container does not move until it is full.
- Transhipment: changing vessel at an intermediate port adds days.
- An incomplete file: an error in the invoice or list of contents halts clearance in Libya.
- Congestion at the Libyan port: it varies between ports and seasons.
- Jeddah’s seasons: Ramadan and Hajj add pressure on the port and on trucks.
Shipping prices from Jeddah to Libya
Jeddah’s price advantage is that the first line of the bill, haulage to the port, is small. What remains is the sea, land or air freight, then services in Libya if you ask for delivery to the door. These are the prices our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Carton | Consolidated sea or land freight | SAR 140 |
| Per kilogram above 100 kg | Consolidated freight | SAR 5.5 per kilogram |
| Cubic metre | Part-load sea freight | SAR 415 |
| Small load | Minimum per shipment | SAR 1,380 |
| Bedroom | Part load | SAR 1,650 |
| Small car | RoRo or shared container | SAR 3,220 |
| 20ft container | Full container | SAR 4,600 |
| 40ft container | Full container | SAR 5,200 |
| Air freight | From King Abdulaziz Airport | SAR 28 per kilogram |
| Documents | Express | SAR 83 |
Prices quoted in the market for this route are higher than that: a carton between SAR 150 and 350, a kilogram for large loads between SAR 6 and 9, a cubic metre between SAR 450 and 650, a bedroom between SAR 1,800 and 2,500, and a small car between SAR 3,500 and 5,000. Container freight moves with shipping-line rates, so we fix it for you on the booking day. Container prices are detailed in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| Method | Sea is cheaper, air is faster, and land sits between |
| Volume or weight | By the cubic metre or container type by sea, and by weight by air. Work it out with the volume calculator |
| Libyan port | The freight differs between Misrata, Benghazi, Tripoli and Khoms |
| Scope of service | To the Libyan port, or to the consignee’s door |
| Added services | Packing, dismantling, assembly, storage and insurance |
| Season | Ramadan, Eid and summer see higher demand |
How do you lower the cost?
- Choose a shared container for medium volumes.
- Book three weeks before Ramadan, Eid and summer.
- Ask for the service all-in under one offer instead of separate services from several parties.
- If your shipment is over 15 cubic metres, compare the full-container price with the per-metre price.
- Choose the port nearest the consignee’s city; transport inside Libya is costly over long distances.
Sea freight from Jeddah to Libya: full and shared containers
Sea is the heart of the service on this route. It is the first choice for full households, cars, commercial goods, building materials and anything large or heavy. And because the port is in Jeddah itself, the container comes to your door on a truck, is loaded in front of you and sealed, and is opened only in Libya.
| Comparison | Full container | Consolidated part load |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | The whole container | What you occupy by the cubic metre |
| Time | 14–30 days | 20–40 days |
| Loading | At your door, sealed in front of you | At the consolidation warehouse with other shipments |
| Best for | A full home or more than 15 cubic metres | Cartons and one or two rooms |
| Price starts from | SAR 4,600 for a 20ft container | SAR 415 per cubic metre |
A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, the furniture of a two- to three-room flat. A 40ft container holds about 58 cubic metres, a full home or a car with furniture. Sizes are on the container sizes page, and the service in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping cars from Jeddah to Libya

Cars are the most requested service on the Jeddah–Libya route. A Libyan buyer finds showrooms and auctions in Jeddah, with the quay minutes away. The car ships from the port in one of three ways, which differ in protection, price and timing:
| Method | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated container | A 20ft container for one car, or a 40ft for two. Secured with straps and wooden chocks and sealed | Luxury and new cars, and those who want to ship belongings with the car |
| Shared container | Several cars for different customers in a 40ft container, with the freight split | Ordinary cars, and showroom traders |
| RoRo | The car is driven up the vessel’s ramp and driven off at the Libyan port | Running cars, trucks and buses |
The price starts from SAR 3,220 for a small car. A dedicated container is the safest and the dearest, a shared one waits to fill, and RoRo requires the car to run and to be completely empty. The comparison is on the container car shipping and RoRo car shipping pages, and in the article sea car shipping from Jeddah.
Car documents and the conditions for importing into Libya
Understand the destination’s conditions before you pay for the car. A car that is not accepted in Libya, or that attracts charges you did not expect, costs you more than the whole freight.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Proof of ownership | The registration or notarised sale contract, and the stamped purchase invoice if from a showroom or auction |
| Purchase invoice | Showing the model, year of manufacture, chassis number and price; the customs value is assessed on it |
| Export certificate | From Jeddah traffic after fines are paid and plates surrendered |
| Details of both parties | The sender’s ID, and the Libyan consignee’s name, national number or passport, and address |
| Bill of lading | Issued after loading, and used to collect the car at the Libyan port |
| Age of the car | Set by Libya through decisions that change; the figure in circulation today is about 10 years from the year of manufacture. We confirm what applies before you buy |
| Steering and condition | Left-hand drive only, and badly crashed cars may be refused |
| Libyan charges | Calculated on value, engine size and year of manufacture, so a larger engine pays more |
Send us the car’s model, year of manufacture and engine size before you buy, and we will tell you whether it can enter Libya and the approximate cost up to the plate. The general guide is on the car shipping guide page.
The car’s journey from Jeddah to Libya in eight steps
- Checking before purchase: that the car is free of any restriction or liability that blocks the export certificate.
- Collection: a carrier collects it from the showroom, the auction or your home in Jeddah, with photos from every angle.
- Export: surrendering the plates and obtaining the export certificate, and preparing the file.
- Entering the port: a short trip to Jeddah Islamic Port, and export clearance.
- Securing and shipping: inside the container or on the RoRo vessel, and issuing the bill of lading.
- Sailing: you follow the vessel with the container or bill of lading number until it berths.
- Libyan clearance: our agent files the declaration and follows the inspection and assessment of charges until release.
- Delivery and registration: from the port yard or by carrier to the consignee’s city, then registration with Libyan traffic using the release papers.
| Cost item | What sets it | How to save on it |
|---|---|---|
| Carrier to the port | The car’s size and location in Jeddah | Small in Jeddah, and included in the service |
| Sea freight | Method, Libyan port and season | A shared container for ordinary cars |
| Documents and export | Traffic procedures and the bill of lading | Included in the all-in service |
| Libyan customs and clearance | Value, engine size and year of manufacture | Choosing a model with an economical engine |
| Insurance | The car’s value | We do not advise skipping it for valuable cars |
Luxury cars, classic cars and heavy equipment
Not every vehicle ships the same way. A luxury car or a rare classic has an arrangement that protects its paint and low body. A truck or an excavator does not fit in an ordinary container at all.
- Luxury and sports cars: a separate container, protection for corners and mirrors, and soft straps on the wheels that do not touch the paint.
- Classic cars: a detailed record of condition before shipping, and insurance at market value.
- Trucks and buses: on RoRo vessels, charged by the linear or cubic metre.
- Excavators and project equipment: on flat-rack containers or RoRo after studying dimensions and weight.
- Before handover: a quarter tank of fuel or less, an empty car, a photo of the odometer, and paper and digital copies of the bill of lading, invoice and export certificate.
Details are on the heavy equipment shipping page.
Shipping furniture and household goods from Jeddah to Libya

When a Libyan family in Jeddah decides to return, moving the whole home by sea becomes a job with its own planning. The furniture will stay in the container for weeks, with sea humidity and the rolling of the ship. Two things protect it: packing that resists humidity, and stowage that prevents movement.
- Survey: by photos or at the home, to estimate the volume and choose the container.
- Dismantling: bedrooms, sitting rooms and wardrobes, with screws and hinges kept in numbered bags tied to their piece.
- Packing: blankets for wood, bubble wrap for glass and mirrors, double-wall cartons for appliances, and wooden crates for chandeliers and screens.
- Inventory: a numbered list of every piece and carton, used at customs and for checking on delivery.
- Loading at the door: the container comes to your home, so it is loaded once and sealed.
- In Libya: unloading and carrying into the home, and assembly if you asked for it.
Libya’s supply is 230 volts, much like the Kingdom’s, but the plugs differ, so your appliances may need a plug adapter. Service details are on the furniture shipping page.
Shipping parcels and personal belongings
Gifts for family, a returning expatriate’s clothes, purchases from Jeddah’s markets, and a Libyan pilgrim’s suitcases over the airline allowance. These ship by the carton or the kilogram, by consolidated sea or land freight if you are not in a hurry, and by air if you want them within days.
- Carton: from SAR 140 by consolidated freight, double-wall and no more than 30 kg.
- Per kilogram: from SAR 5.5 above 100 kg.
- By air: from SAR 28 per kilogram, on the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
- Consignee details: full name, city, address and a Libyan mobile number.
- Declaration: an honest description of the contents and their value, and no prohibited items however small.
Details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods from Jeddah to Libya
Jeddah is a wholesale market and a port city at once. A Libyan trader buys from its markets and warehouses, with the goods kilometres from the quay. We collect straight from the supplier, and gather purchases from more than one supplier into a single container.
| Line | Shipping method | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and foodstuffs | Dry or refrigerated container | Health certificate, certificate of origin and expiry date |
| Appliances and electronics | Sea with shock-resistant packing, or air for high value | An invoice detailed by model |
| Building and finishing materials | Strapped pallets in a full container | Planned weight distribution inside the container |
| Clothing, fabrics and abayas | Bales and cartons in consolidated freight | A packing list by count and weight |
| Perfumes and incense | Sea with special packing | A statement of contents; restricted by air |
| Spare parts | Sea for quantities, and air for urgent items | Part numbers on the invoice |
A regular importer gets a fixed monthly schedule. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Packing to sea-freight standards
A container at sea faces two things road transport does not: humidity that condenses inside it as the temperature swings between night and day, and constant rolling that shifts anything not secured. Sea packing allows for both.
- Against humidity: tight plastic wrap, and desiccant bags inside appliance cartons and inside the container.
- Against shock: multi-layer bubble wrap, double-wall corrugated cardboard, corner guards, and wooden crates for valuables.
- Stowage: heavy items at the bottom, gaps filled, and the load strapped to the container’s lashing rings.
- Labels: a number on every piece matching the list of contents.
Packing methods are in the packing guide.
Documents and customs clearance
The file is reviewed before the shipment enters the port. Fixing an error in Jeddah takes an hour, and fixing it at the port of arrival takes days and storage charges. When the shipment arrives, our broker in Libya takes over the file: customs declaration, then inspection, then assessment of charges and their payment in coordination with the consignee, then release.
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and personal belongings | A detailed list of contents, the sender’s ID, the consignee’s passport or national number, and the bill of lading | Describing them as a returnee’s used belongings usually earns easier treatment |
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, and the Libyan importer’s registration | Some lines need health or technical certificates |
| Car | Registration, purchase invoice, export certificate and bill of lading | Charges on value, engine size and year of manufacture |
| Parcels | Description and value of the contents, and the consignee’s details | Within personal use |
The documents are explained on the required documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Libya or needs a permit
| Item | Rule |
|---|---|
| Drugs and alcohol | Prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and explosives | Prohibited |
| Counterfeit goods and forged currency | Confiscated |
| Medicines and supplements | With documents and prescriptions |
| Foodstuffs | With health certificates and an expiry date |
| Plants and agricultural products | With a plant quarantine certificate |
| Radio communication devices | By prior permit |
| Batteries, perfumes and liquids | Subject to special conditions in air freight |
The general list is on the prohibited items page. If you hesitate over any item, ask about it before packing it.
The Libyan ports and cities we deliver to

The Libyan coast runs about 1,800 km, and Tripoli and Benghazi are more than 1,000 km apart by road. So the wrong port means a long, costly road haul after arrival. We choose the port nearest the consignee’s city and best on schedule:
| Port | Region | Cities it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Misrata | West and centre | Misrata, Zliten, Sirte, Tarhuna, and the southern cities |
| Tripoli | West | Tripoli, Zawiya, Sabratha, Gharyan |
| Khoms | West | Khoms and around, and an alternative to Tripoli when it is congested |
| Benghazi | East | Benghazi, Al Marj, Al Bayda, Ajdabiya |
| Tobruk | Far east | Tobruk, Derna, with the Musaid land post nearby |
Southern cities such as Sabha are served by road from Misrata or Tripoli on request. Write the consignee’s full name, city, district and a Libyan mobile number.
Land freight from Jeddah to Libya
The truck leaves Jeddah north for Duba port, boards the ferry as it is to the Egyptian coast, then drives west across Egypt to the Salloum border post and enters Libya at the Musaid post. It reaches Tobruk first and then Benghazi, and continues along the coast road to Sirte, Misrata and Tripoli.
- Its advantage: the shipment stays in the same truck from Jeddah to Libya, so handling drops.
- Time: 10 to 20 days depending on procedures at the border posts.
- Best for: medium furniture loads, goods bound for eastern Libyan cities, and foodstuffs in refrigerated trucks.
- What it needs: transit documents through Egypt, and an accurate list of contents checked at more than one post.
- When it does not suit: cars, and very small loads.
Details are on the land freight page.
Air freight from Jeddah to Libya

For when the matter cannot wait for a ship: an official document, a spare part that work depends on, medicine, or a valuable device. The shipment leaves King Abdulaziz International Airport and reaches Mitiga airport in Tripoli, Benina in Benghazi or Misrata airport through a transit point, within 2 to 7 days including clearance.
- For whom: documents, commercial samples, spare parts, electronics and medicines.
- Charging: on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Price: air freight starts from SAR 28 per kilogram, and documents by express from SAR 83.
- What it does not suit: furniture, building materials and bulky goods.
- Restricted by air: batteries, perfumes and liquids, which have conditions we guide you on before packing.
Details are on the air freight page, and in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Collection from Jeddah’s districts, and storage near the port
We pack and load at your location, in any district of Jeddah: Al Rawdah, Al Salamah, Al Nuzhah, Al Safa, Al Balad and others. We also collect from the towns of the western region, and their shipments are carried to Jeddah port:
| Town | Distance from Jeddah | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Makkah | About 80 km | Collected the day before loading |
| Taif | About 170 km | Carried to Jeddah in a closed truck |
| Yanbu | About 330 km | Joins the coastal trips |
| Madinah | About 420 km | Carried straight to Jeddah port |
If you are gathering purchases from several suppliers, or your home in Libya is not ready yet, we store your shipment in our Jeddah warehouse, inventoried, and when you say “ready” it moves to the quay in a short trip. Details are on the storage page, and in the article international shipping companies in Jeddah.
Steps for shipping from Jeddah to Libya
- Contact: you describe your shipment with photos, and give your district in Jeddah and the consignee’s city in Libya.
- Method and price: we suggest the best method and port, and the price reaches you by line.
- Booking: we set the collection day and ask for copies of the documents.
- Collection and packing: at your address, with a numbered list of contents and photos.
- Documents and export: a complete file reviewed before entering the port.
- Sailing and tracking: the container or bill of lading number, and an update at every stage.
- Clearance and delivery: our agent in Libya completes the procedures, then delivery from the port or to the door.
Tracking and insurance
You will not need to ask where your belongings are. From collection day you have a reference number, and from sailing day the container and bill of lading numbers with which you follow the vessel yourself. And we update you at every point: entered the port, sailed, passed the canal, berthed in Libya, clearance started, release issued, out for delivery.
- Tracking: with the container or bill of lading number on the shipping line’s site. Details are on the track your shipment page.
- Record: photos of every item before packing and after loading, which are the basis of any claim.
- Insurance: optional, calculated as a percentage of the declared value, and we recommend it for cars, full households and electronics. Details are on the cargo insurance page.
- On receipt: check the pieces against the list and note any remark before signing.
Shipping from Libya to Jeddah
The route works in both directions. We receive the shipment through our agents at the Libyan ports, it sails to Jeddah Islamic Port, and is delivered in the city or in Makkah and Taif after clearance. A Saudi returning from work in Libya brings in his used personal belongings exempt with a list of contents. Commercial goods are subject to the Kingdom’s duties and tax according to their type.
How do you choose a shipping company from Jeddah to Libya?
| What you ask about | Reassuring sign | Warning sign |

| Price | Itemised lines: sea, clearance, delivery | One figure and you do not know what it covers |

- Leaving personal belongings in a car shipping by RoRo.
- Choosing a port far from the consignee’s city because its freight is lower.
- Loading the container without an inventory, so clearance is delayed.
- Road packing for a sea shipment, with no protection from humidity.

- Booking days before Ramadan or Hajj.
