The air distance is about 4,300 km, covered by the direct flight in roughly seven hours, while a container reaches the German address four to five weeks after it is loaded. We move furniture, cars, goods, parcels and student baggage, and deliver to the door. An air kilogram starts from SAR 23, shared-container furniture from SAR 5,500, and a saloon car from SAR 2,800. Who ships from Riyadh to Germany, and what do they ship?
The capital has German engineers and technicians who work on its projects and then go home with their households, scholarship students reading medicine and engineering at German universities, patients who travel with their companions for treatment lasting months, and dealerships and factories that exchange parts and samples with their German suppliers. We ask every customer about their status before their volume, because German customs treats each group differently:
| Shipper | What they ship | Best method | Status at German customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| German returning at the end of a contract | Household furniture, appliances and a car | 20ft or 40ft container | Transfer-of-residence relief on its conditions |
| Saudi or resident moving for work | Family baggage and selected furniture | Shared container | The same relief after registering an address |
| Scholarship holder and student | Books, winter clothes and room items | Cartons by sea, and a suitcase by air | Relief for students’ requisites with proof of admission |
| Patient and companions | Long-stay baggage and assistive devices | Mostly air | Used personal effects |
| Dealership, factory and trader | Goods, samples and parts returning for repair | Container for quantities, and air for urgent items | Duty by tariff heading and 19% tax |
| Government body and embassy | Documents, exhibition items and staff baggage | Air for documents, and sea for baggage | According to the consignee’s status |
The shipping route from Riyadh to Germany and its duration
The sea journey from Riyadh begins on tarmac, not on water. The shipment covers the road to Jeddah port, then the vessel crosses the Red Sea, the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean, leaves through Gibraltar into the Atlantic, enters the English Channel and the North Sea, and then sails about a hundred kilometres up the River Elbe to the quays of Hamburg. These are the stages of a full container and the usual length of each:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Loading in Riyadh | Dismantling the furniture, packing, numbering and writing the inventory | 1–2 days |
| The road to the sea | Truck to Jeddah port, or train from the dry port to Dammam | 1–3 days |
| Export and waiting for the vessel | Export declaration and the container entering the shipping line’s yard | 3–7 days |
| Sailing to Hamburg | A direct voyage, or with a change of vessel at an intermediate port | 16–22 days |
| German clearance | Import declaration and the relief claim or payment of duty and tax | 2–5 working days |
| Transport inside Germany | Truck or train from Hamburg to the city, then unloading | 1–3 days |
The time changes with the method. A container you share with others is slower than a private one, the car vessel has its own port, and the aircraft cuts the weeks down to days:
| Method | Route | Time from Riyadh to the door | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | Riyadh → Jeddah → Hamburg | 27–38 days | A whole household or wholesale goods |
| Shared container | Consolidated in the Kingdom and sorted in a German warehouse | 32–43 days | A room or two and student cartons |
| RoRo for cars | Carrier to Jeddah, then a car vessel to Bremerhaven | 28–40 days | A car that runs under its own power |
| Air | King Khalid Airport → Frankfurt | 3–6 days | Parcels, spare parts, documents and suitcases |
What lengthens the time?
- The loop round Africa: if the vessel turns away from Suez to the Cape of Good Hope its voyage stretches by one to two weeks, so we ask the shipping line about its route before we book.
- A container ahead of its owner: if the vessel berths before you have registered your address in Germany, the relief claim is delayed and the container stays in the port.
- A vague contents list: German customs opens the cartons when it reads “household items” with no detail.
- Distance of the city from the port: Munich and Stuttgart in the south add a day or two compared with Berlin and Hanover.
Times for the other destinations are on the transit times page.
Sea freight from Riyadh to Germany via Hamburg

Hamburg is Germany’s largest container port, and from it railways and motorways branch out to every federal state, which is why we make it the arrival port for most of what we ship from Riyadh. The question that comes first: how does a container from the middle of Najd reach the sea? It has two doors. The first is Jeddah Islamic Port, about 950 km to the west, whose vessel heads straight north to Suez. The second is King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam, about 400 km to the east, linked to Riyadh by a container train that leaves from the dry port, but its vessel sails round the Arabian Peninsula, so the voyage is about a week longer.
| Comparison | Truck to Jeddah port | Dry-port train to Dammam |
|---|---|---|
| Distance from Riyadh | About 950 km on the motorway | About 400 km by road, with the train on the freight line |
| Where the export declaration is made | Jeddah port | Riyadh, and the container leaves sealed |
| The vessel’s route to Hamburg | The Red Sea, then Suez | The Strait of Hormuz, round the peninsula, then Suez |
| Effect on the time | Usually the shortest | About a week longer |
| When we use it | For furniture, baggage and cars | For factory goods when the vessel schedule suits |
At the German end, Hamburg is not the only option. We choose the port according to the type of shipment and the consignee’s address:
| Port | What it receives | Cities it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Hamburg | Full and shared containers | Berlin, the north and the east, and the rest of Germany by rail and truck |
| Bremerhaven | Car vessels, and containers | Bremen, Hanover and the north-west |
| A port in a neighbouring country on the North Sea | Containers for western Germany when its schedule is closer | Cologne, Düsseldorf and the Ruhr |
A 20ft container holds about 28 cubic metres, and a 40ft container roughly double. We book its space on the vessel before the truck moves from Riyadh, so that it does not wait in the port yard running up storage charges. The service is explained on the sea freight page, and the dimensions on the container sizes page.
The price of shipping from Riyadh to Germany
The price is built on what you ship, not on distance alone. A parcel is priced by its weight, furniture by its volume, a whole household by the container, and a car by its class. And because Riyadh is far from the sea, the quotation carries an item that someone living in Jeddah never sees: the road charge to the port. These are the figures our services start from on this route:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Parcels, suitcases and spare parts | Air from King Khalid Airport | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Furniture and baggage | Shared container | SAR 5,500 |
| Full household furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | RoRo from Jeddah port | SAR 2,800 |
| Car in a closed container | 20ft container | Set on request |
| Student cartons | Shared box by sea | Set by the number of cartons |
| Transport from Riyadh to the port | Truck or train | Set on request |
| Insurance | Optional | 1% of the shipment value |
The prices circulating in the market for this route cover a wide span. An air parcel of no more than 5 kilograms is published at between SAR 200 and 500, one under 10 kilograms at between SAR 300 and 1,500, and a heavy air shipment from SAR 1,500. Global freight platforms quote between 10 and 25 dollars per express-courier kilogram, and between 3 and 7 dollars per kilogram of commercial air cargo. By sea, a 20ft container is quoted at between SAR 4,000 and 8,000, and a 40ft container at between SAR 8,000 and 15,000, sometimes reaching SAR 20,000, while other sources publish between 5,000 and 10,000 dollars for the former and between 7,000 and 15,000 dollars for the latter from Riyadh to the door, and between 80 and 150 dollars port to port per cubic metre in a shared container. Between SAR 200 and 800 extra is mentioned for collection from the outskirts of Riyadh. Some figures end at the quayside and some reach the bedroom.
| What sets the price | Its effect on a Riyadh shipment |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The cubic metre by sea and the chargeable weight by air. Work it out with the CBM calculator |
| The road to the port | 950 km to Jeddah is added to the sea freight |
| The German city | Berlin is about 490 km closer to Hamburg than Munich |
| Where the service ends | At the port, or at the door with clearance and assembly |
| Difficulty of the building | An upper floor with no lift, an external hoist, or a parking permit |
| Season | Late summer and the start of the academic term see higher demand |
How do you cut the cost?
- Choose a loading day that matches our consolidated run from Riyadh to Jeddah, so the road charge is split across more than one shipment.
- Complete the relief conditions before shipping, because 19% tax on a whole household outweighs any discount on the freight.
- Do not ship a kitchen or an air conditioner that will not run on German electricity.
- Send by air only what you need in your first weeks, and leave the rest to the container.
- Dismantle the large pieces; a dismantled wardrobe takes a third of the volume it takes standing.
All the factors are explained on the pricing factors page.
Shipping household goods and furniture from Riyadh to Germany
Riyadh furniture is made for spacious homes with wide doors, while the German flat is usually smaller, and many of its older buildings have no lift and a narrow staircase that winds round on itself. So we begin the survey with a question about the home waiting for the furniture: how large is it, on which floor, and does it have a kitchen? Flats there are often let with no kitchen and no wardrobes, which makes moving some pieces worthwhile and makes others a burden.
- Survey: a visit or video call in which we count the pieces and estimate the cubic metres.
- Sorting: the long Arabic majlis and the six-door wardrobe are measured against the German room before we pack them.
- Dismantling and numbering: every panel has its number, with its screws in a bag stuck to it.
- Appliances: we read each appliance’s label to see whether it accepts 50 hertz, and what does not stays behind.
- Loading: where the street has room, the container itself is parked outside the house; otherwise a closed truck shuttles the pieces to our warehouse, where the container is filled.
- In Germany: carrying the pieces into their rooms, assembling what was dismantled and taking away the empty cartons.
The furniture shipping page describes the service in full, and the packing and lashing page shows how a load is held in place in the container.
Transfer-of-residence relief in Germany
Anyone moving their normal place of residence from the Kingdom to Germany brings in their used effects with no duty and no import tax, which saves a family moving its home thousands of riyals. The relief is claimed on a customs declaration specific to removal goods, lodged at clearance, together with proof that you really have changed your country of residence. The conditions in current practice are as in the table, and we go through those in force with you before loading:
| Condition | Detail |
|---|---|
| Previous residence | At least 12 months outside the European Union |
| Use of the items | At least 6 months before the move, so anything new in its box does not qualify |
| Import deadline | Within 12 months of the date of your move |
| After entry | No selling, lending or hiring out for 12 months |
| What it does not cover | Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and non-portable tools of a trade |
| Proof of the move | Address registration in Germany, and proof of your previous residence in the Kingdom such as the tenancy contract or end-of-service letter |
| Second flat and holiday home | In current practice their furniture is outside this relief |
The practical order for a Riyadh resident: we load the container a few days before you travel, so you fly out and register your address at the residents’ office within the first two weeks, and receive the registration certificate while the container is still at sea. And if you do not yet have an address, the furniture stays packed in our warehouse in the Kingdom, or in the agent’s warehouse in Germany after release, at a charge set on request. The terms are on the storage page, and the full service on the door-to-door shipping page.
Full container or shared container?
A full container is booked for you alone; it is sealed when loaded and opened only before customs or at your door. A shared container adds your shipment to those of others bound for Germany, so you pay only for the volume you occupy, and in return accept a longer time and more handling. The dividing line between them, for us, is about 15 cubic metres:
| Comparison | Full container | Shared container |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | The whole container, full or not | Your cubic metres only |
| Time from Riyadh | 27–38 days | 32–43 days |
| Number of handlings | One loading and one unloading | Consolidation in the Kingdom and sorting in Germany |
| Suits | Three rooms or more, or furniture with a car | A room or two and cartons |
| Price starts from | SAR 11,000 | SAR 5,500 |
For anyone shipping furniture and a car together we recommend a 40ft container: the car at the front secured by its straps, and the furniture behind a timber partition. Container rates from the port are in the article Container shipping prices from Jeddah.
Shipping baggage for students, patients and their companions
Two groups in Riyadh travel to Germany with more bags than the aircraft allows. The scholarship student needs his books and winter clothes he is not used to, and the patient referred for treatment there stays with companions for months near a hospital in Munich, Heidelberg or Bonn. The first can wait, so he ships by sea; the second wants his things on arrival, so he ships by air.
- The student’s date: the winter semester at German universities starts in October, so the cartons are handed to us in late August.
- The German address: the name is written as it appears on the doorbell and letterbox, because delivery there goes by name, not flat number.
- The patient’s baggage: a wheelchair or home breathing device ships by air in special packing, with its battery stated on the declaration.
- Medicines: they stay with the traveller with their prescription and medical report, and do not go in the shipment.
Shipping personal parcels and gifts from Riyadh to Germany
A family’s parcel to a son or relative leaves Riyadh by air and is handed over at the address. German customs goes through everything that enters from outside the European Union, so no parcel passes without a declaration stating each item and its value. Anyone who wrote only “gifts” found the parcel held and a letter asking the consignee to attend the customs office.
- Price: starts from SAR 23 per kilogram on the chargeable weight, and a small parcel has a minimum charge set on request.
- A gift between two individuals: in current practice a gift worth no more than 45 euros is exempt, and above that import tax is charged. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Dates, coffee and cardamom: accepted in personal quantities in sealed packs showing the contents.
- What we take out of the parcel: ghee, cheese and meat, perfumes in quantity, and loose batteries.
How to prepare a parcel is on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping electronic and electrical appliances to Germany
Appliances need two decisions before packing: will they work there, and do they enter tax-free? Germany runs on 230 volts and a frequency of 50 hertz with a round two-pin socket, while the Kingdom’s grid is 60 hertz. A computer, screen and phone accept both frequencies, but an appliance with a motor or compressor has its label read first. And a new appliance in its box does not enter as part of a mover’s effects; it is treated as a purchase.
- Screens: in the original box if there is one, otherwise in a timber frame with foam on the face.
- Computers and games consoles: anti-static wrap, then foam, and a double-wall carton.
- Lithium batteries: those fitted inside the device are accepted by air with restrictions, and loose ones are not loaded on the aircraft.
- Serial numbers: we write them in the contents list, as they are your evidence for insurance and customs’ evidence that the device is used.
Packing methods for each item are in the packing guide.
Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to Germany
Germany is Europe’s largest economy and its strictest on standards. From the factories of the industrial cities in Riyadh, Al-Kharj and Sudair it receives dates, plastic products, packaging materials and oriental perfumes. Goods cleared in Hamburg become free to move across all the Union’s countries, so many exporters make it their gateway to the continent. What each item needs:
| Item | Shipping method | What it needs in Germany |
|---|---|---|
| Dates and dry foods | Dry or refrigerated container | A label in German with the importer’s name and address |
| Foods of animal origin | Refrigerated | A health certificate and entry through a veterinary inspection post |
| Plastic and chemical products | Full container on pallets | Safety data sheet and registration of the substance by the importer |
| Appliances, toys and consumer products | Sea or air | Conformity with European standards and their mark |
| Samples and exhibition items | Air | A sample invoice, or a temporary admission carnet for what will return |
The German importer needs a European customs registration number, and without it the declaration is not accepted. Duty follows the tariff heading of the goods, followed by import tax of 19% in general and 7% for some foods and books. Wooden pallets carry the ISPM 15 heat-treatment stamp. And for those taking part in the trade fairs of Frankfurt, Hanover, Düsseldorf and Cologne we ship the exhibits on a temporary admission carnet and bring them back after the fair. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Germany

The car is not driven from Riyadh to the port. A car carrier takes it from your home or the showroom and delivers it to Jeddah port in one to two days, and there it sails in one of two ways: on a RoRo vessel it is driven onto and lashed in the hold, or inside a closed container. RoRo vessels call at Bremerhaven, one of Europe’s largest car ports, and the container goes to Hamburg.
| Method | How it works | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| RoRo | The car boards under its own power, is secured by its wheels and ships empty of belongings | The ordinary running car, and it is the lowest rate |
| Closed 20ft container | Straps, timber chocks and a seal on the door | Luxury and classic cars and those whose engine does not run |
| 40ft container | A car with furniture, or two cars | The family moving its home and its car |
RoRo starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port; a four-wheel drive is higher because the rate follows the volume, and the carrier charge from Riyadh is set on request. Before shipping we obtain the export certificate and export plates with you from the traffic department. The two methods are compared on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.
The more important part begins after the quay, which is why we go through the import conditions with you before booking, not after. In current practice the car pays 10% customs duty and then 19% import tax on the value, freight and duty, unless it enters as part of the effects of someone moving residence who has used it for six months. A car more than thirty years old that has stayed in original condition has reduced treatment. Then comes registration:
- Clearance certificate: issued by customs, and the registration office does not accept the car without it.
- Transport from the port: on a carrier, or on short-term temporary plates.
- Individual approval inspection: a Gulf-specification car is inspected in full at an authorised technical inspection body, and its lamps may be modified and its emissions data requested.
- Insurance: an electronic insurance number from a German insurer before registration.
- Environmental sticker: many city centres cannot be entered by a car without the green sticker.
Conformity modifications can cost more than the shipping itself, so send the make of the car, its year of manufacture and its chassis number and we will work out the full picture with you. The general conditions are in the article Car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
German customs and the required documents
Germany applies the European Union’s common customs tariff and adds its own import tax. The tax is calculated on the value of the goods plus the freight, insurance and duty. The declaration is lodged electronically before or on the vessel’s arrival, and is handled by a broker authorised by the owner of the shipment. Missing paperwork is the first reason containers stay in Hamburg, and this is what each type needs:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and effects of someone moving residence | Passport, address registration, proof of previous residence, detailed contents list and bill of lading | The list in German or English |
| Student baggage | Passport and visa, admission or enrolment letter, and contents list | Accommodation address and the name on the bell |
| Car | Registration and export certificate, purchase invoice, passport and chassis details | Proof of six months’ use for anyone claiming relief |
| Commercial goods | The invoice and packing list, the bill of lading, proof of origin, plus the European customs number held by the importer | Extra certificates for foods and chemicals |
| Parcel or gift | Sender’s ID, and a declaration of the items and their values | Consignee’s name, address and mobile number |
Before the shipment leaves Riyadh we lodge the Saudi export declaration on your behalf, and if you are a resident whose job has ended we add a copy of your final exit visa to the file. What does each paper mean? The answer is on the shipping documents page. And how is the container released in Hamburg? See the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Germany or needs a permit
The European Union’s health rules apply to a kitchen carton just as they apply to a trader’s container. What most often stops the effects of families coming from Riyadh is a tin of ghee, cheese or dried meat placed in good faith among the pots. We go through this list with you on the survey day:
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Meat and dairy and their products | Prohibited in personal baggage and parcels |
| Medicines | Personal-use quantity with a prescription, and the rest by permission |
| Weapons, ammunition and prohibited knives | Prohibited, or with a prior German licence |
| Unlicensed fireworks | Prohibited |
| Plants, seeds and soil | With a plant-health certificate |
| Ivory, coral and skins of protected animals | Prohibited without the international convention certificate |
| Counterfeit goods | Confiscated, and a fine may be imposed |
| Alcohol and tobacco | Outside the relief, with their own duties |
| Cash of 10,000 euros or more | Declared, and it stays with the traveller |
The prohibited items page has the full general list. Not sure about one piece? Photograph it and send it over while the carton is still open, and you will have an answer.
Delivery in Berlin, Munich and Frankfurt

After release in Hamburg the container moves inland by truck or train, and the road network puts the farthest German city within two days of the port. Our agent does not leave the furniture on the pavement: the crew carries each piece to its room, assembles the beds and wardrobes that were dismantled in Riyadh, and takes the packing waste away. These are the cities we deliver to most:
| City | Distance from Hamburg | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|
| Berlin | About 290 km | Many old buildings with no lift, and an external furniture hoist when needed |
| Frankfurt | About 490 km | Residential towers with service lifts booked by appointment |
| Munich | About 780 km | The farthest of the major cities, with a day or two added |
| Cologne and Düsseldorf | 400–430 km | The trade-fair and corporate centres of the west |
| Stuttgart | About 660 km | Sloping streets that need a smaller truck in some districts |
| Hanover, Leipzig and Nuremberg | 150–610 km | Delivery one to two days after release |
| Hamburg and Bremen | Up to 120 km | On the release day or the day after |
Delivery in Germany has three rules that we arrange in advance. The truck needs a temporary parking zone in front of the building, requested from the municipality days ahead. Heavy trucks do not normally run on Sundays and public holidays, so we do not schedule delivery on them. And the name on the bell and letterbox must match the name on the bill of lading. The other destinations are on the destinations page.
Services for individuals, companies and government bodies
Riyadh brings together the ministries, authorities, company headquarters and embassies, so the customers on this route are not of one kind. We divide the service like this:
| Customer | What they ask for | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Moving a home or baggage at a clear price | A survey, an itemised price and one coordinator until delivery |
| Students and patients | Small shipments on fixed dates | Shared boxes by sea and suitcases by air |
| Companies and dealerships | Recurring parts, samples and goods | An annual contract, an account manager and a report on every shipment |
| Government bodies and universities | Exhibits, documents and laboratory equipment | Commitment to the event date and return of what comes back afterwards |
| Embassies and missions | Baggage of transferred staff and correspondence | Loading from the Diplomatic Quarter with a prior entry permit |
Air freight from Riyadh to Germany

Riyadh has in the air what it lacks at sea: an airport within it and direct flights to Frankfurt, Germany’s largest cargo airport. The shipment enters the cargo village at King Khalid Airport, is weighed, measured and security-screened, and then flies for about seven hours. After clearance in Frankfurt it is distributed by truck to the cities, reaching the address 3 to 6 days after collection. To Munich and elsewhere it travels on a direct flight or through an intermediate stop according to the schedule in force.
- For whom: parcels and urgent spare parts, samples, students’ and patients’ suitcases, and documents.
- Spare parts: a part of a German machine going back to its factory for repair ships with an invoice stating that it is a temporary return, so no sales tax is charged on it.
- Calculation: a light but bulky carton is charged by its size rather than its weight, because the aircraft sells space. Enter its dimensions in the volumetric weight calculator to see which of the two weights is used.
- Price: starts from SAR 23 per kilogram and falls as the weight rises, and from SAR 83 for documents.
- What is not loaded: pressurised containers, flammable liquids and loose batteries.
- Delivery: to the address against the consignee’s signature, or at Frankfurt Airport for those with their own broker.
Service details are on the air freight page.
For anyone hesitating between aircraft and vessel, this is the difference between them for a shipment leaving Riyadh:
| Comparison | Air | Sea |
|---|---|---|
| Time from Riyadh | 3–6 days | 27–43 days |
| Exit point | King Khalid Airport | Jeddah port, or the dry port then Dammam |
| Arrival gateway | Frankfurt Airport | Hamburg or Bremerhaven |
| Unit of charge | The chargeable kilogram | The cubic metre or the container |
| Price starts from | SAR 23 per kilogram | SAR 5,500 for a shared container |
We do not rely on land freight to Germany. The road passes through many countries and several borders, and a sea container arrives sealed at lower cost and lower risk. The detailed comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.
Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns
We collect from every district of the capital: Al Malqa, Al Narjis, Hittin and Al Yasmin in the north, Al Rawdah and Al Naseem in the east, Al Olaya and Al Sulaimaniyah in the centre, Al Shifa and Al Aziziyah in the south, Irqah and Tuwaiq in the west, and the Diplomatic Quarter. We add the surrounding governorates to the Riyadh run:
| Place | Distance from Riyadh | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh’s districts | Within the city | From the door, with dismantling and packing on site |
| Gated residential compounds and the Diplomatic Quarter | Within the city | With an entry permit requested before the loading day |
| Al-Muzahimiyah | About 60 km | It lies on the port road, so it is loaded on the truck’s way |
| Al-Kharj | About 80 km | Moved to the Riyadh warehouse a day before the run |
| Al-Majmaah and Sudair | About 180 km | Factory goods by prior appointment |
| Qassim | About 350 km | Added to the Riyadh run, mostly dates |
What else we do in Riyadh is set out in the article International shipping company in Riyadh, and the service cities page lists every city we cover.
Steps for shipping from Riyadh to Germany
- Request: you send a list or photos of what you are shipping, the name of your district, and the German city and its postcode.
- Your customs status: moving residence, student, visitor for treatment, or trader. We build the file on it.
- Survey and price: we estimate the volume and choose the method, and you receive the price with its items and what it covers.
- Fixing the day: we tie the loading day to both your travel date and the vessel date.
- Loading: dismantling, packing and numbering at your home, and you sign the inventory list.
- Leaving Riyadh: a truck to Jeddah or a train to Dammam, or the cargo village at the airport.
- Sailing and follow-up: you receive the container or waybill number, and a message at every stage.
- Release and delivery: the agent clears in Germany, agrees the day with you, then unloads and assembles.
Insuring and tracking the shipment
The sea carrier is liable for the container within narrow limits set by international conventions, and its compensation comes nowhere near the value of a household’s furniture. Insurance is what closes that gap. We offer it as a separate item starting from 1% of the declared value, and explain what it covers and what it excludes before you decide.
- Extent of cover: from the door of the home in Riyadh to the door of the home in Germany, including the road leg, the sailing and the handling.
- In case of damage: you write your remark on the delivery note before the crew leaves, and attach photos of the piece before packing and after opening. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.
- Tracking: a sea shipment is followed with its container number on the line’s site, an air shipment with its waybill number; the track your shipment page shows how.
Shipping from Germany to Riyadh
The route works in both directions. The scholarship student who has finished his studies returns with his books and belongings, the patient who has completed treatment ships the devices he bought, the workshop in Riyadh is waiting for a part for a German machine, and the buyer from shops there wants an address that gathers his orders. Our agent collects from any German city and combines purchases from more than one seller into a single shipment.
- By air: straight to King Khalid Airport, cleared there and delivered in your district.
- By sea: to Jeddah or Dammam port, then by truck or train to Riyadh.
- At Riyadh airport or the port: what the returnee used during the years of study or treatment is cleared on its contents list, and what was bought new is charged 15% value added tax plus the duty for its item.

Home Safe’s tips before shipping to Germany
- Plan early: book five to six weeks before you travel.
- Pack for the sea, not the street: weeks of humidity need different packing from a local move.
- Write the declaration honestly: each item by its name and true used value, because a token value raises suspicion.
- Follow your shipment: with the container number every few days.
- Prepare the German address: your name on the bell, the truck’s parking permit, and someone to receive if you are away.
- Read the label of every appliance: what does not accept 50 hertz is not worth its freight.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Germany?
A large sum separates the cheapest and dearest Riyadh offers on this route, and the reason is usually items the cheapest offer kept quiet about that will surface in Hamburg. Put these questions to whoever is quoting you, and listen to the answer:
| Question | A reassuring answer | A worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| Is the establishment registered? | Commercial registration, a contract and a stamped receipt | A transfer to a personal account with no paper |
| Which port does it leave from and which does it reach? | They name Jeddah or Dammam, and Hamburg or Bremerhaven | “From Riyadh straight to Germany” |
| What is the status of my furniture at German customs? | They ask about your residence and address registration | “Used goods never pay any customs” |
| How long does it take? | They separate sailing days from the time to the door | “Two weeks by sea from Riyadh” |
| Who delivers in Germany? | A named agent, with unloading and assembly in the price | “You collect it from the port yourself” |
| How was the volume estimated? | A survey and a list of pieces | A flat figure from a short call |

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to Germany
How much does shipping from Riyadh to Germany cost?
Our prices on this route start from SAR 23 per air-freight kilogram leaving King Khalid Airport, and from SAR 83 for an express document envelope. By sea, shared-container furniture starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house container from SAR 11,000, and a saloon car by RoRo from SAR 2,800 counted from Jeddah port. The road charge between Riyadh and the port is set on request because it follows the volume and the loading location. Write to us on 0552803439 with what you are shipping and your German city.
What is the best shipping company from Riyadh to Germany?
The one that proves three things to you: a commercial registration and a written contract, a clear answer about the ports of exit and arrival, and an agent in Germany who clears the shipment and carries it into the home. Home Safe is an establishment with commercial registration 4030601060; it reviews your customs position before the container is sealed, and delivers with unloading and assembly.
What is the cheapest way to ship from Riyadh to Germany?
Sea is always cheaper than air for anything measured in cubic metres. Someone with less than about 15 cubic metres pays only for their volume in a shared container, and for a whole household a private container becomes the better value. The aircraft is only economical for a light parcel or for an item with a deadline that cannot wait a month.
How many days does a shipment need from Riyadh to reach Germany?
By aircraft, 3 to 6 days to the address. By full container, 27 to 38 days in normal conditions, of which 16 to 22 days are between Jeddah port and Hamburg. A shared container takes 32 to 43 days, because it waits for its load to be completed and is then sorted in a warehouse in Germany.
Does the price change with the district I live in within Riyadh?
Slightly. The northern districts are closer to King Khalid Airport, and the port truck leaves the west of the city on the Makkah road, with the distance inside Riyadh a minor part of the 950 km. What really changes the price is the volume, the floor, the lift and whether the truck can park.
Riyadh has no port, so where does my shipment sail from?
From Jeddah Islamic Port in most cases, which the shipment reaches on a truck covering about 950 km. The alternative is the container train from the dry port south of Riyadh to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam; we turn to it when its vessel schedule suits, although sailing from the Gulf takes about a week longer because of the loop round the Arabian Peninsula.
Do I pay customs in Germany on my used household furniture?
You do not if you are moving your place of residence there and meet the relief conditions in current practice: at least 12 months living outside the European Union, items you have used for at least 6 months, bringing them in within 12 months of your move, and not selling or lending them for 12 months afterwards. Anyone not covered pays a duty by item and 19% import tax.
Can I ship the furniture before I register my address in Germany?
Yes, and that is the usual way: the container sails while you travel and register your address, so the certificate is in your hand when the vessel berths. The problem is a container arriving before you have an address, since the relief is claimed with proof of the change of residence. That is why we fit the loading day to your travel day.
Do you ship a car from Riyadh to Germany?
Yes. A car carrier takes it from Riyadh to Jeddah port, and from there it sails by RoRo to Bremerhaven or in a closed container to Hamburg. RoRo starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from the port, and the carrier charge from Riyadh is added according to the type of car. We go through the import and inspection conditions with you before booking.
Can a Gulf-specification car be registered in Germany?
It can be registered once it passes an individual approval inspection at an authorised technical inspection body, and before that it may need its lamps modified and emissions data supplied from the manufacturer. Both countries use left-hand-drive cars, so the steering side is no issue. A European-built car is easier to bring into conformity than others, so send us its make and year of manufacture before you decide.
Will my electrical appliances work in Germany?
The voltage in Germany is 230 volts and the frequency 50 hertz, and the socket is round with two pins. An appliance whose label reads 50/60 hertz works with a plug adaptor alone. Anything built for 60 hertz only that has a motor or compressor, such as some air conditioners and washing machines, may overheat or wear out early, and is better left in Riyadh.
What must not go into baggage cartons bound for Germany?
Meat and dairy and their products whatever the quantity, medicines beyond your personal need or without a prescription, counterfeit goods, prohibited weapons and knives, and plants and seeds without a plant-health certificate. Cash, gold and original documents travel with you, not with the furniture.
Do you ship urgent spare parts by air to Germany?
Yes, and they are among the most common air shipments out of Riyadh: a part going back to its factory for repair or warranty, or a sample for a supplier. It enters the cargo village at King Khalid Airport and reaches the consignee’s address in 3 to 6 days. A part returning for repair has its status written on the invoice so that it is not treated as sold goods.
Does the price include insurance on the shipment?
It is not in the price unless you ask for it. It is an optional item starting from 1% of the value you write in the contents list, and we think it is worth having for household furniture, a car and appliances, since the shipment crosses half the Arabian Peninsula by road, then three weeks at sea, then the roads of Germany.
Do you also ship from Germany to Riyadh?
Yes. Our agent collects from the home, the university accommodation or the supplier in any German city, and the shipment arrives by air at King Khalid Airport or by sea at Jeddah or Dammam and then by land to Riyadh. A returnee’s used baggage is cleared in the Kingdom as personal effects, and new items carry duty and 15% value added tax.
