Who ships from Riyadh to Austria, and what do they ship?
Shipments from Riyadh to Austria carry the stamp of the capital. They include scholarship students bound for the medical, engineering and music universities of Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck. They include staff seconded to the international organisations headquartered in Vienna, the best known being the energy organisations. They include families who travel every summer to Zell am See and Salzburg, and companions of patients who stay for months near the hospitals. Each of these has a different shipment and a different customs treatment:
| Shipper from Riyadh | What they send | The method that suits them | Treatment at Austrian customs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scholarship holder and student | Books, winter clothes and personal devices | Cartons in a shared container, or by the kilo by air | Student effects relief with proof of admission |
| Staff member seconded to Vienna | Household furniture, appliances and sometimes a car | A 20 or 40 ft container | Transfer-of-residence relief under its conditions |
| Family on summer holiday | Excess suitcases, a pushchair and baby items | Air to the hotel or flat | Used personal baggage |
| Patient’s companion | Baggage and supplies for a long stay | Air, or cartons by sea for an extended stay | Personal baggage; medicines travel with the passenger |
| Trader and factory | Dates, perfumes, food and industrial products | Full container, with samples by air | Duty by tariff heading and 20% tax |
| Embassy and government body | Printed matter, pavilion equipment and office furniture | Air for the urgent, sea for volume | According to the consignee’s status |
That is why two questions come before the price with us: in what capacity does the consignee live in Austria, and in which city? The first answer decides what is paid at customs, and the second decides the European port the container enters through.
The shipping route from Riyadh to Austria and its duration
This route combines two difficulties that rarely meet on one lane: the sending city is far from the sea, and the receiving country has no sea. So the container starts on land and ends on land, and the vessel is a link in the middle. Anyone who measures the time by sailing days alone is surprised by two extra weeks. We count it for you from your door in Riyadh to the consignee’s door, and these are its stages for a full container:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Loading in Riyadh | Dismantling the furniture, packing, numbering and writing the list | One to two days |
| The road to the port | A truck to Jeddah, or a train from the dry port to Dammam | 1–3 days |
| Export | The Saudi customs declaration and waiting for the booked vessel | 2–5 days |
| Sailing | The Red Sea, then Suez, then the Mediterranean, with transhipment on some services | 12–20 days |
| The European port | Discharging the container and moving it to the rail siding | 2–4 days |
| The train to Austria | Crossing the border under the European customs transit procedure, unopened | One to 3 days |
| Clearance and delivery | The Austrian import declaration, then a truck to the address | 2–5 days |
And these are the four methods we work with, with their door-to-door times:
| Method | How it travels | Duration | For whom |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full container | Sealed in Riyadh and opened at the consignee’s | 25–40 days | A whole house, furniture with a car, or a trader’s goods |
| Shared container | Consolidated with other shipments, then sorted in a European warehouse | 30–45 days | Students’ cartons and a few pieces of furniture |
| Car by RoRo | A transporter to Jeddah, then a car carrier, then a European transporter | 28–42 days | Cars that run and can be driven |
| Air | King Khalid Airport → Vienna Airport → the address | 3–7 days | Documents, urgent baggage and parcels |
What lengthens the time?
- Truck entry hours: large trucks enter Riyadh’s streets at hours set by the traffic department, so we confirm those in force before loading day.
- Changing vessel: some services to the Adriatic call at a hub port in the Mediterranean, and the change adds days.
- The train timetable: the container train leaves on fixed days, and a container that misses it stays overnight in the port.
- Completing the consolidation: a shared container does not leave the warehouse before it is full.
- The address paper: the relief for a person moving cannot be filed before he registers his address in Austria.
- Holidays and snow: European public holidays close customs, and winter slows the mountain roads in the west of the country.
Anyone wishing to measure this lane against others will find the table for every country on the transit times page, and what sets each mode apart on the shipping methods comparison page.
From Riyadh to a European port, then Austria by rail

Austria has no sea coast, so no vessel reaches it. The container is discharged at a port in a neighbouring country and then lifted onto a container train that carries it across the border in hours. The nearest harbours to it are on the Adriatic Sea: Koper in Slovenia and Trieste in Italy. Koper is the leading sea gateway for Austria’s trade, and most of what leaves it for Austria travels by rail rather than road, with regular container trains to Graz, Villach, Enns and Linz. The North Sea ports are an alternative when their schedule fits better.
| European port | Location | Distance from Austria | We choose it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koper | Slovenia, northern Adriatic | About 270 km from Graz and 480 km from Vienna | Delivery is in Graz, Klagenfurt or Vienna |
| Trieste | Italy, next to Koper | Distances close to those of Koper | The shipping line has a nearer sailing to it, or the destination is in Salzburg or Tyrol |
| Hamburg | Germany, North Sea | About 1,000 km from Vienna | The destination is Linz or Salzburg, with many trains to both |
| Bremerhaven | Germany, North Sea | Close to Hamburg’s distance | The car is shipped on a RoRo vessel |
| Rotterdam | The Netherlands | Slightly farther than Hamburg | The shared container is sorted in its warehouses |
Liner services from Jeddah to the Adriatic are direct in some cases and via transhipment in others, and that changes as the lines’ schedules change. So we do not promise you a port before we see the schedule for the week you ship in, and then we write its name and the name of the Austrian arrival terminal in the booking. Because Slovenia, Italy, Germany and Austria are in one customs union, the container stays sealed until it is cleared at the Austrian customs office near the consignee. The other gateways we work from are on the ports and gateways page.
Shipping prices from Riyadh to Austria: air and sea compared
The price on this route is a sum, not a single figure. It contains the road leg from Riyadh to the port or airport, the sea or air freight, the rail and truck leg from the European port to the Austrian city, and then the delivery services. Air is charged by the kilogram, and sea by the cubic metre or by the container. These are the figures our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Suitcases, parcels and samples | Air from King Khalid Airport to Vienna | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Documents | Express | SAR 83 |
| Furniture and baggage | Shared container | SAR 5,500 |
| A whole household of furniture | Full container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | RoRo to the European port | SAR 2,800 |
| A student’s cartons | By the carton in a shared container | Set on request by the number and size of cartons |
| Transport from Riyadh to the port | Truck or the dry port train | Set on request according to the load |
| Moving the car from the European port to Austria | Car transporter | Set on request according to the city |
| A car by air freight | Freighter aircraft | Set on request by dimensions and weight |
An example from Riyadh: a student in Al Malqa has two suitcases and a carton, with a combined chargeable weight of 30 kilograms. Her air freight is 30 × 23, that is from SAR 690 to Vienna Airport. Had there been twelve cartons of books, sea would have saved her a great deal, even with a month’s wait.
Prices circulating in the market for this route vary enough to confuse anyone asking. An air kilogram is offered at between SAR 22 and 35, and some offers mention a figure as high as SAR 450, which is really the price of a whole small parcel and not of a kilogram. Sea part loads run between SAR 4,500 and 7,500 per shipment, or between SAR 300 and 700 per cubic metre. A 20 ft container is quoted for the sea freight alone from SAR 3,500 and a 40 ft container from SAR 6,500, while a container door to door comes to between SAR 12,000 and 18,000. Shipping a car in a container is offered at between SAR 9,000 and 13,000, and by air from SAR 25,000. So before you compare two figures, ask where each one stops: at the European port, or at the door?
| What moves the price | How it shows in a Riyadh to Austria shipment |
|---|---|
| Volume or weight | The cubic metre by sea and chargeable weight by air. Estimate your volume with the CBM calculator |
| The inland road | About 950 km to Jeddah, an item not paid by anyone shipping from a coastal city |
| The European port | A port near the consignee shortens the rail and truck distance in Europe |
| The Austrian city | Graz and Vienna are nearer the Adriatic; Innsbruck and Bregenz are farther, by mountain road |
| Where the service stops | At the port, at the Austrian terminal, or in the room with assembly |
| The season | Late summer and the run-up to the year-end holidays see higher demand |
Costs that may be added: Austrian duty and tax for anyone not covered by a relief, the insurance premium if you ask for it, port storage if the consignee’s papers are late, and a parking permit for the truck in some Vienna streets. We list them for you item by item before booking. Payment methods: bank transfer or electronic payment, and for companies and establishments a payment arrangement agreed in the contract.
How do you lower the cost?
- Join our scheduled run from Riyadh to Jeddah, so you pay a share of the truck hire and not all of it.
- Send by air what you need in your first week, and leave the rest to the shared container.
- If you approach 15 cubic metres, ask for the price of a 20 ft container and compare.
- Agree a single loading day with fellow scholarship students in Riyadh, so the shared container fills sooner.
- Have the address registration and relief papers ready before the container arrives, so no storage is charged on it.
- Sell in Riyadh what will not fit an Austrian flat: the large majlis and the wardrobe that cannot be dismantled.
Each item is explained on the pricing factors page, and container rates from the port are in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
Leaving Riyadh: the Jeddah road or the dry port?
The first decision in a Riyadh shipment is which sea it heads for. To the west is Jeddah Islamic Port on the Red Sea, about 950 km away by motorway. To the east is King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam on the Arabian Gulf, which the container reaches by freight train from the dry port in the south of Riyadh. Dammam is nearer, but its vessel sails round the Arabian Peninsula before reaching Suez, adding about a week to the voyage. That is why most of what we ship to Austria leaves from Jeddah.
| Point of comparison | Truck to Jeddah port | Dry port train to Dammam |
|---|---|---|
| Distance inside the Kingdom | About 950 km | About 550 km by rail |
| Where the export declaration is made | Jeddah port | Riyadh, before the container moves |
| The vessel’s route | North to the Suez Canal | The Strait of Hormuz, then round the peninsula, then the Red Sea |
| Suits | Furniture, baggage and cars | Regular factory goods, and a sailing whose schedule fits |
Air freight needs no long road: King Khalid International Airport lies north of the city and has an air cargo area where shipments are handed over ahead of the flight. The rest of what we offer in the capital is explained in the article international shipping company in Riyadh.
Shipping household goods and furniture from Riyadh to Austria
The furniture of a home in Riyadh is bigger than the home waiting for it in Austria. A villa in Hittin or Al Narjis has a majlis, a dining room and fitted wardrobes, while the flat in Vienna is seventy or ninety square metres in an old building with a spiral staircase. So the first job is not packing but sorting: what is shipped, what is sold here, and what is stored. Then comes the rest:
- Survey: a visit or a video call, from which we come away with the number of cubic metres and a list of what is dismantled.
- Dismantling: beds, wardrobes and the dining table are taken apart in Riyadh, and each piece’s screws are tied in a bag bearing its number.
- Packing: corrugated cardboard and bubble wrap for the pieces, wooden boards around glass and marble, then a wrap that keeps moisture out.
- Inventory: a number on every piece, and a list in English that the Austrian customs office accepts.
- Loading: stowage that allows for 950 km of road before the sea, with straps tightened to the container walls.
- Assembly in Austria: carrying the pieces into their rooms and reassembling what was dismantled, and removing the empty cardboard on request.
Furniture in a shared container starts from SAR 5,500, and a full-house container from SAR 11,000. Before you pay freight on a large piece, measure the flat’s door and the staircase there, because in some buildings furniture is lifted through the window by an external hoist. Service details are on the furniture shipping page, and protection methods in the packing guide.
A full or a shared container for shipping to Austria?
Volume settles the question. Anyone who fills half a 20 ft container or more is better served by a private container, because it is locked in front of him in Riyadh and nobody touches his belongings until it is opened outside his home. Anyone with ten cartons or a bedroom buys space in a shared container and pays for his own cubic metres only, accepting in return more handling and more days.
| Item | Full container | Shared container |
|---|---|---|
| Basis of charge | The hire of the whole container | The cubic metre |
| Duration | 25–40 days | 30–45 days |
| Handling | One loading and one unloading | A consolidation warehouse in the Kingdom and a sorting warehouse in Europe |
| After the European port | Container train, then a truck | A distribution truck from the sorting warehouse |
| Price starts from | SAR 11,000 | SAR 5,500 |
A 20 ft container holds close to 28 cubic metres, which is the furniture of a two- or three-room flat. A 40 ft container holds close to 58 cubic metres, so it carries a whole house, or furniture and a car together. All the dimensions are on the container sizes page.
Shipping students’ belongings from Riyadh to Austria

A scholarship student from Riyadh travels with two suitcases and needs far more than that in Austria. Winter in Vienna and Graz is long, books and references are heavy, and what is bought there costs more. The answer is for his belongings to go ahead of him or follow him in two ways: by the carton by sea in a shared container, or by the kilo by air from SAR 23 per kilogram. The first is for what can wait a month, the second for what he needs in his first days.
- What is shipped: books and references, clothes, coats and winter shoes, personal devices such as a computer and printer, kitchen items, and coffee, cardamom and dates in amounts for personal use.
- The carton: double-walled and no more than 25–30 kilograms, because whoever carries it at the residence may take it up the stairs.
- Devices: each device in its own carton with padding, and its serial number written in the list. Loose batteries are not shipped by air.
- The address: the student’s name as registered at the university residence, the building name, the room number, and an Austrian mobile if there is one.
- Timing: sea cartons leave about six weeks before travel, and air ones a week before.
- Customs: a student’s used effects are exempt on conditions under European Union rules, and we confirm what is in force and the papers before shipping.
Delivery to university accommodation has its own arrangement. Reception desks work limited hours, and some will not accept on the student’s behalf if he is not present. So we tell the student the arrival day, agree an hour with him, and take the cartons up to the room, not to the entrance. Riyadh students travelling together save when they gather their cartons on a single loading day.
Shipping goods and parcels from Riyadh to Austria: all you need to know
A personal parcel from Riyadh travels by air door to door, and it is the simplest thing on this route. What is allowed is broad: clothes, documents, gifts, books, dry non-perishable foods, and commercial products with their invoice. But Austrian customs treat every parcel arriving from outside the European Union as an import, so an honest description on the declaration is what gets it through without a hold.
- A gift between individuals: exempt if it is occasional and its value does not exceed 45 euros in current practice; above that, import tax is collected.
- Low-value parcels: the duty rules on them in the European Union are under revision, so we confirm those in force before sending.
- The declaration: each item by name, quantity and value in English. The words “personal effects” alone stop the parcel.
- Packing: a sturdy carton for clothes, a moisture-proof bag for what is affected by damp, and padding round anything breakable.
- Dates and sweets: in sealed factory boxes and in personal quantities.
- The large, heavy parcel: switched to sea in a shared container when air becomes dearer than its value.
Urgent documents, such as attested certificates, contracts and embassy papers, start from SAR 83 and are delivered against the consignee’s signature. The service is explained on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping electronic devices from Riyadh to Austria: safe and reliable methods
An electronic device is damaged by three things: shock, moisture and static electricity. On this route a fourth is added, the temperature gap between a Riyadh summer and an Alpine winter, which condenses water inside the carton. So we pack devices differently from furniture, and before that we ask a question that comes ahead of packing: will the device work there at all?
- Fitness to run: Austria’s electricity is 230 volts at 50 hertz with a round socket. Computers and chargers work; appliances with motors have their labels checked.
- Packing: a double-layer carton, foam cut to the device’s size, an anti-static bag, and moisture-absorbing sachets.
- Screens: shipped upright in a wooden crate or their original carton, with nothing placed on top.
- The method: phone, computer and camera by air; fridge, washing machine and office equipment by sea.
- Batteries: lithium inside the device is accepted by air within limits, while a loose battery and a power bank face tighter restrictions.
- Record and insurance: a photo of the device working, its serial number in the list, and insurance on its declared value.
A new device in its box is treated at customs as goods, not personal baggage, even if it is a gift. Anyone who wants it covered by the student’s or mover’s relief should ship what he has actually used. Ways of securing devices inside the container are on the packing and lashing page.
Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to Austria
The factories of Riyadh’s industrial city and its traders export to Austria goods that enter the whole European Union market with it. That is why they are checked at the first European gateway against the Union’s standards. The Austrian importer needs a European customs registration number, and the goods are classified by their heading, on which duty and then 20% import tax are calculated. Riyadh’s advantage is that the export declaration can be completed at the dry port before the container leaves the city.
| Item | How it is shipped | What is required for it in Europe |
|---|---|---|
| Dates | Dry or refrigerated container, with samples by air | A label in German and an expiry date, and a phytosanitary certificate on request |
| Processed foods | Pallets in a container | Ingredients and allergens in the country’s language |
| Perfumes and cosmetics | Sea, or air under dangerous goods classification | A European responsible person for the product and its safety file |
| Electrical devices and equipment | Sea with shock-resistant packing | The European conformity mark and its declaration |
| Plastics and chemicals | Regular full containers | The safety data sheet and registration of the substance |
| Exhibition equipment | Air or sea according to the date | Temporary admission where it applies |
Wooden pallets and crates are heat-treated and stamped with the international mark, or they are refused at the gateway. Heavy machinery and anything exceeding container dimensions is shipped on a flat rack, with its price set on request. The service is on the commercial shipping page, and equipment on the heavy equipment shipping page.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Austria: procedures and prices
A car does not leave Riyadh on its own wheels. It is loaded onto a car transporter to Jeddah port, and there you choose between two ways. On RoRo it is driven uncovered onto the vessel’s deck and secured by its tyres, and shipping a saloon starts from SAR 2,800 to the European port. In a container it is lashed and the doors are locked on it, which suits a valuable car or anyone shipping furniture with it. Air freight for cars is available for special cases, and its price is set on request.
- Preparing the car: it is emptied of belongings, its windows are closed, and a quarter of a tank of fuel or less is left in it.
- Condition report: photos from all sides and a record of every scratch before loading, signed by you and the driver.
- Export papers: the registration, cancellation of the plates and the export certificate, and the owner’s ID or his power of attorney.
- After the European port: a car transporter to your city in Austria, as it cannot be driven before clearance and plates.
The sea freight is the least you will pay. The bigger invoice awaits the car when it is registered in Austria; we set out its items here as the official bodies there publish them, and then go over with you whatever has changed on the day you book:
| Item | What it means for a car coming from Riyadh |
|---|---|
| Customs duty | 10% on the car’s value and the cost of bringing it to the Union’s border |
| Import tax | 20% on the value, the freight and the duty together |
| Consumption tax | Paid at first registration, rising with the engine’s emissions and size |
| Relief for a person moving residence | Lifts the duty and import tax from a car he used for six months, but not the consumption tax |
| Individual approval | Gulf specifications carry no European certificate of conformity, so it is inspected and its lighting and exhaust may be modified |
| The Austrian road | Winter tyres in wintry conditions, and the motorway toll sticker |
So a large car with an eight-cylinder engine may cost several times its freight after it arrives. Send us the model, year of manufacture and engine capacity, and we will set out the figures before you decide. The two methods are explained on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages, and the general conditions in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Austrian customs and transfer-of-residence relief
Austria is a member of the European Union, so its customs tariff is the common European tariff, with 20% import tax on top. Anyone leaving Riyadh to take up normal residence in Austria brings in his baggage and furniture free of duty and tax, if he meets what the Austrian Ministry of Finance publishes:
| Condition | What is required |
|---|---|
| Length of previous residence | At least twelve continuous months outside the European Union |
| Use of the belongings | At least six months before leaving the Kingdom |
| Entry deadline | Within twelve months of settling in Austria |
| After release | Not sold, lent or hired out for a full year without notifying customs |
| Outside the relief | Alcohol and tobacco, commercial vehicles, and non-portable tools of trade |
| Proof | The relief application form, confirmation of the registered address, the employment or tenancy contract, and proof of residence in Riyadh |
The knot is in the timing. Confirmation of the registered address is issued only once you actually live there, so anyone who shipped his container from Riyadh two months before travelling found it arrived before him and stood waiting for a paper. The safer course is to travel while the container is at sea, register your address in your first week, and have the container arrive with its file ready. The conditions are updated, so we go through those in force with you before loading.
Documents required for shipping from Riyadh to Austria
The papers are checked in Riyadh, because correcting a description or a value here takes minutes, while correcting it in Austria takes an amended declaration, days and fees. We ask for copies of the documents on booking day and send a set to our agent before the shipment arrives, so he files the electronic declaration while it is on its way.
| Shipment | Papers | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture of a person moving residence | Passport and residence permit, address registration, relief application, numbered list and bill of lading | The list in English or German |
| A student’s belongings | Passport, admission letter or university enrolment, residence address and contents list | No new devices in their boxes |
| Commercial goods | The importer’s European customs registration number, with the invoice, the packing list, the origin certificate and the bill of lading | Health or conformity certificates according to the item |
| Car | Registration, purchase invoice, export certificate and bill of lading | With the relief application, if any |
| Parcel or gift | A declaration of contents and value, and the consignee’s name, address and phone | The true value shortens the way |
The full explanation is on the shipping documents page, and what happens at the gateway is on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Austria or needs a permit
What is banned on this route is banned mostly by Europe, not by the Kingdom. What most often stops Riyadh shipments is two items the sender packs in good faith: food of animal origin, and medicine. Ghee, dried yoghurt, cheese and cured meat do not enter the European Union in personal baggage, and medicine is not posted to an individual in Austria except within narrow limits.
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Narcotics and psychotropic substances | Prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and banned knives | Prohibited or under a special licence |
| Meat, dairy and their derivatives | Prohibited in personal shipments |
| Medicines | Restricted, and carried with the traveller with their prescription |
| Counterfeits | Confiscated, and the consignee may be fined |
| Plants and seeds | With a phytosanitary certificate |
| Ivory, coral and skins of protected species | With permits under the international convention, or prohibited |
| Perfumes, batteries and pressurised containers | Limited by air, and switched to sea when needed |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivery in Vienna, Linz, Graz and the other cities

Once the customs release is issued, the last stage begins: clearance, then delivery. The container waits at an inland terminal near the city, and from there a truck goes out to the address. Vienna receives most Riyadh shipments because it has the major universities, the international organisations and the embassies. Linz is an industrial city on the Danube. Graz is a university city and the nearest of the large cities to the Adriatic. Salzburg and Innsbruck are destinations for students and summer visitors.
| City | Distance from Vienna | What usually reaches it from Riyadh | Delivery note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | The capital | Staff furniture, students’ cartons and embassy shipments | A temporary parking zone is booked with the municipality days ahead |
| Linz | About 185 km | Goods and equipment, and staff furniture | Served by a container terminal on the Danube |
| Graz | About 200 km | Cartons of medical and engineering students | Koper trains reach its terminal directly |
| Salzburg | About 300 km | Summer visitors’ suitcases and furniture for seasonal homes | Its old centre is closed to large trucks |
| Innsbruck | About 480 km | Students’ cartons and air parcels | Mountain road, and an extra day in winter |
| Klagenfurt and Villach | About 320 km | Furniture and baggage | The nearest to the Adriatic ports |
| Zell am See and Kaprun | In the Alps | Families’ suitcases in summer | Delivered at the hotel under the guest’s name and arrival date |
Write the address the way it is written there: the street and building number, then the staircase and door number, then the postcode and city. Give the name written on the doorbell, because the driver looks for that and not for a flat number. Tell us the floor and whether there is a lift that takes furniture. Our other destinations are on the shipping destinations page.
Home Safe services for individuals, establishments and companies
The service is one at its root and different in how it is run. An individual in Riyadh wants someone to come to his home and tell him the whole price. A company wants a schedule and a contact it knows. An official body wants a documented procedure. Each has an arrangement:
| Client | What we take on | What we watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Furniture, baggage, a car and parcels door to door | The consignee’s status in Austria and the relief he is entitled to |
| Students and scholarship holders | Cartons and suitcases at the shared-shipment rate | The start of term and the university residence address |
| Companies and factories | Goods, samples and regular shipments under contract | Delivery terms in the sales contract, and conformity with European specifications |
| Establishments and government bodies | Printed matter, exhibition pavilions and delegation equipment | The letter of assignment and the official date |
| Embassies and missions | Office furniture and the baggage of staff being posted | Diplomatic relief is requested by the employer, and we prepare the list and bill of lading for it |
Door to door means that one coordinator follows the truck, the vessel, the train and both customs. The service is on the door-to-door shipping page, and anyone whose address is not yet ready can use storage in Riyadh until he gives the word to load.
Advantages of sea freight to Austria from Riyadh
The sea is the route that carries volume. What it makes no sense to send by aircraft, such as a bedroom, a fridge, a car or pallets of goods, travels in the container at a cost spread over many cubic metres. The price of that is time: weeks, not days. Anyone who plans his shipment a month and a half before travelling does not feel that price.
- Lower cost for volume: a cubic metre by sea is far cheaper than its chargeable weight by air.
- No practical size limit: from a carton to a machine that needs a flat rack.
- A sealed container: with a full container the seal number is written in the bill of lading and matched on opening.
- Container tracking: its number shows the vessel’s position from Jeddah to the European quay.
- A car and furniture together: a 40 ft container combines the two in one voyage.
| Point of comparison | Sea freight | Air freight |
|---|---|---|
| Duration | 25–45 days | 3–7 days |
| Unit of charge | The cubic metre or the container | The chargeable kilogram |
| Price starts from | SAR 5,500 for a part load | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Suits | Furniture, cars and bulky goods | Documents, urgent baggage and small devices |
| Point of departure | Jeddah or Dammam port after a road leg | King Khalid Airport in Riyadh itself |
The service is explained on the sea freight page, and how cargo leaves the port in the article international sea freight from Jeddah. We do not rely on a land route to Europe.
Air freight from Riyadh to Austria and its advantages

Air is the only route that starts in Riyadh itself with no long land stage. The shipment is handed over at King Khalid International Airport and lands at Vienna International Airport, Austria’s leading air cargo gateway. There are direct flights between the two cities according to the schedule in force, and the others pass through one transit point. Door to door takes 3 to 7 days, the price starts from SAR 23 per kilogram, and documents from SAR 83.
- For whom: for documents and urgent baggage, students’ suitcases, traders’ samples, spare parts and small valuable devices.
- Chargeable weight: the greater of actual and volumetric weight is taken. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator before you seal the carton.
- Speed: what leaves Riyadh at the start of the week is usually delivered in Vienna before its end.
- Less handling: one loading and one unloading, so the chance of damage is lower for sensitive items.
- Precise tracking: the air waybill number shows take-off, landing and release.
- Delivery to the address: after release at Vienna Airport the shipment is distributed by truck to Linz, Graz, Salzburg and Innsbruck.
What air does not suit is well known: furniture and large numbers of cartons, as the kilogram rate makes shipping them dearer than their worth. Perfumes, lithium batteries and pressurised containers have limits and a classification. The service is on the air freight page.
Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns
Our team reaches the home in any district of the capital and brings the packing materials, so you need prepare nothing. In the north Al Malqa, Al Narjis, Al Yasmin and Hittin; in the centre Olaya, Sulaimaniyah and Malaz; to the east Al Rawdah, Al Hamra and Al Naseem; to the west Irqah and Tuwaiq; and to the south Al Aziziyah and Al Shifa. Shipments from the surrounding governorates are gathered into Riyadh and then leave with it:
| Place | Distance from central Riyadh | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Riyadh’s districts | Inside the city | From the front door, with dismantling and packing on site |
| The Diplomatic Quarter and gated residential compounds | Inside the city | With an entry permit requested from the compound management before loading day |
| Diriyah | Adjoining the capital | With the runs for the northern and western districts |
| Al Muzahimiyah | About 60 km | It lies on the Jeddah road, so it is loaded as the truck passes |
| Al Kharj | About 80 km | Brought to the Riyadh warehouse a day before departure |
| Al Majmaah and Sudair | About 180 km | By prior appointment, and for factory goods in particular |
| Qassim | About 350 km | Added to the Riyadh run, with dates as its main shipment |
Tower blocks and compounds in Riyadh have set times for using the service lift, so we coordinate with their management before arriving. The other collection cities are on the service cities page.
Steps for shipping from Riyadh to Austria
- Contact: you send to 0552803439 photos of the shipment, your district in Riyadh, the Austrian city and the consignee’s status there.
- The plan: we propose the method and the European port, and you receive the price with its items and what it does not cover.
- Booking: the loading day and a space on the vessel or flight are fixed, and you send copies of the papers.
- Loading: the team arrives, dismantles, packs and numbers, and you sign the list and take your copy.
- Leaving Riyadh: a truck to Jeddah port or a train to Dammam, or handover at King Khalid Airport.
- The journey: the container or air waybill number, and a message at the European port and on entering Austria.
- Clearance: our agent files the declaration and the relief application, and the consignee gives him the address registration confirmation.
- Delivery: unloading, carrying in and assembly, with the pieces checked against the list before signing.
Tracking the shipment and insuring it
A Riyadh to Austria shipment changes its carrier at least four times: truck, then vessel, then train, then distribution truck. Electronic tracking covers the vessel and the aircraft well and weakens at the changeover points. So we do not leave you to the website alone, and we message you at every change: the container’s arrival at Jeddah port, its sailing, its discharge at the European port, its loading onto the train, and the issue of the release.
- By sea: the container number is enough to know where the vessel is day by day. The method is on the track your shipment page.
- By air: the air waybill number shows the parcel’s status from King Khalid Airport to release in Vienna.
- Insurance: yours to take or leave; the premium is a share of the value you declare, and on request the cover runs for the entire trip from one door to the other. The cargo insurance page sets out the terms.
- On receipt: open damaged cartons in front of the driver and write your remark on the delivery note before you sign, as it is the basis of any claim.
Shipping from Austria to Riyadh
The reverse direction is requested by the scholarship student who has finished his studies, the staff member whose secondment has ended, and the family that bought more in the summer than the aircraft will carry. Our agent collects from the address in Vienna, Graz or any city and packs there. Parcels and suitcases fly to King Khalid Airport, and furniture travels by train to the European port and then sails to Jeddah or Dammam, with a truck from there to Riyadh. For a returnee’s used personal baggage we go through the conditions for its exemption in the Kingdom before shipping, while anything new or commercial bears duty and tax according to its type.
Home Safe tips for international shipping from Riyadh to Austria
- Choose the method by the date, not by price alone: what you need within a week goes by air, and what can wait a month goes by sea.
- Pack for the whole journey: devices with what absorbs shock, furniture with what covers the corners, and everything with what keeps out moisture.
- Prepare the papers before the cartons: the list, proof of your status in Austria, and invoices and health certificates for goods where they exist.
- Insure to match the value: insurance is written on what you declared, so do not understate the value to save on the premium.
- Follow the messages: any update you receive may ask for a paper, and a same-day reply keeps the train date.
- Do not ship at the last minute: between Riyadh and the port lies a day or two, so allow for them before the vessel’s cut-off.
- Carry with you what cannot be replaced: the passport, original certificates, medicines and jewellery travel in hand luggage.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Austria?
Two offers that look alike on paper part ways over a few questions. Ask them before you pay a deposit, and compare the answers:
| The question | A reassuring answer | A worrying answer |
|---|---|---|
| Which Saudi port does the container leave from? | Names Jeddah or Dammam and explains why | “Straight from Riyadh”, with no detail |
| Which European port does it enter through? | Names it and names the Austrian arrival terminal | Does not know Austria has no coast |
| Where does the price end? | At the door, or at the port with the remainder stated | “To Austria” only |
| And what about customs? | Asks about your status and address registration | “Personal effects are duty-free”, without qualification |
| And how long? | A time that includes the road, the train and clearance | Sailing days alone |
| What documents my shipment? | A commercial registration, a numbered list and a bill of lading in your name | A receipt with no detail and only a mobile number |
Common mistakes when shipping from Riyadh to Austria
- Counting the time from the sailing day and forgetting the road days from Riyadh and the train days in Europe.
- Loading the container in Riyadh while its owner is still far from his travel date, so it reaches the Austrian terminal ahead of him and storage builds up until he registers his address.
- Shipping appliances that do not run on 50 hertz, or furniture that will not pass the building’s staircase.
- Putting ghee, cheeses or medicines among the clothes, so the carton is opened and the rest is delayed.
- Shipping a Gulf-specification car before working out the consumption tax and the cost of individual approval.
- Writing the university residence address without the room number or without the registered name.
- Comparing a price that stops at the European port with one that reaches the flat door.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to Austria
How much does shipping from Riyadh to Austria cost?
By air from King Khalid Airport a kilogram starts from SAR 23 and an urgent document envelope from SAR 83. By sea, a furniture share in a shared container starts from SAR 5,500, a full-house container from SAR 11,000, and a saloon on a RoRo vessel from SAR 2,800 to the European port. The road leg from Riyadh to the port is a separate item set on request. Message us photos of what you are shipping and the name of your Austrian city on 0552803439.
How many days does a shipment need from Riyadh to reach Austria?
An air parcel reaches its address within 3 to 7 days. A private container takes between 25 and 40 days from your district in Riyadh to the consignee’s home, of which only 12 to 20 are days at sea. A shared container is a little longer, between 30 and 45 days, because two warehouses handle it in turn, one consolidating and one sorting.
Riyadh has no port and Austria has no coast, so how does the container travel?
It crosses two stretches of land with a sea between them. From Riyadh it goes by truck to Jeddah Islamic Port, or on the dry port train to Dammam. It then sails to a European harbour such as Koper, Trieste or Hamburg. From that quay a container train takes it to a terminal inside Austria, and the last stretch is a distribution truck to the door.
Which European port will my container enter through?
That depends on the Austrian city. For Graz, Klagenfurt and Vienna we lean towards Koper in Slovenia or Trieste in Italy on the Adriatic. For Linz and Salzburg we compare those with Hamburg, because trains from the north to both are frequent. The port name is written in your booking before the truck leaves Riyadh.
Does a scholarship student from Riyadh pay customs on his cartons?
European Union rules exempt the clothes, books and used room furniture of a student arriving for full-time study, in current practice. He needs his passport, the admission letter or university enrolment and an honest contents list. New devices in their boxes fall outside the relief. We go through the conditions in force with him before the cartons are sealed.
Am I exempt from tax if I move to work in Vienna?
Yes, if you are transferring your normal residence and meet the published conditions: at least one continuous year outside the European Union, belongings you used for six months before leaving, and entry within twelve months of settling. Confirmation of your registered address in Austria is required. Anyone not covered by the relief pays 20% import tax and duty by item.
Can I ship my car from Riyadh to Austria?
You can, by sea. A car transporter takes it from Riyadh to Jeddah port, then it sails by RoRo or in a container, and shipping a saloon starts from SAR 2,800 to the European port. The larger bill is in Austria, though: 10% duty and 20% tax for those not exempt, a consumption tax at registration, and individual approval for Gulf specifications. We work it out with you before the plates are cancelled.
Can a car be shipped by air?
Air freight for cars is available for special cases, such as a luxury car or a show car with a date that cannot wait for the vessel. It costs several times more than sea, and it can only be priced once the dimensions, weight and freighter schedule are known, so its price is set on request. Most people who ask about it choose sea after comparing.
Do Saudi electrical appliances work in Austria?
The voltage is close, 230 volts there. The difference lies in two things: the Austrian socket is round with two pins, so you need a plug adaptor, and the frequency is 50 hertz, not 60. Chargers, computers and screens mostly run on both frequencies. For a washing machine, an air conditioner and any appliance with a motor, read its label, and if it does not mention 50 hertz, do not ship it.
What should I take out of the cartons before shipping to Austria?
Meat and dairy and anything made from them, even tinned, because they do not enter the European Union in personal shipments. Along with them medicines, counterfeits, and plants and seeds without a certificate. For air freight, add perfumes, loose lithium batteries and pressurised containers, which have limits and special packing.
Do you deliver straight to university accommodation?
Yes. The carton carries the student’s name as registered at the residence, the building name and room number, and an Austrian mobile number if there is one. Residence offices in Vienna, Graz and Innsbruck accept deliveries at set hours, so we arrange the time with them or with the student before the driver sets off.
Do you deliver to cities other than Vienna?
We deliver to Linz, Graz, Salzburg, Innsbruck, Klagenfurt, Villach, St. Pölten and Bregenz, and to resort villages such as Zell am See and Kaprun. The mountainous western cities add a day or two after release, and their roads are affected by snow in winter.
When should I book if my studies start in the autumn?
Sea cartons leave Riyadh about six weeks before your travel date, so they arrive with your first week. Late summer is a busy season on this route because of scholarship students and people returning from holiday, so booking early secures the space. Send what you need on arrival day by air a week before the flight.
Is insuring the shipment compulsory?
It is not compulsory; it is an item you request or leave. Its premium is a percentage of the value you write in the list. Our view is that a journey with a long desert road, a vessel and a European train deserves insurance when the shipment is a household of furniture, a car or valuable devices.
Do you ship from Austria to Riyadh?
Yes. Our agent collects from the flat, the university residence or the shop in Austria. Parcels and suitcases fly from Vienna to King Khalid Airport, and furniture sails to Jeddah or Dammam and is then carried to Riyadh. With a returning student bringing used belongings, we go through what Saudi customs require before he ships.
