Who ships from Jeddah to Tunisia, and what do they ship?

Most of those who call us on this route are Tunisians working in Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah: doctors, nurses, engineers, teachers and hotel staff. Some have finished a contract and are going back with their furniture and car, and some send cartons to their families in the seasons. After them comes the Umrah or Hajj pilgrim whose purchases exceeded the aircraft allowance, then the trader who buys from Jeddah’s markets. Each group has a shipping method that differs from the others:

Shipper What they ship Best method
A Tunisian family returning for good Household furniture, appliances and books A full 20ft or 40ft container
A returnee bringing a car under FCR One car within the age condition Dedicated or shared container, or RoRo
A resident sending to family Cartons of clothes, gifts and small appliances Groupage by the carton or the cubic metre
The Umrah and Hajj pilgrim Excess bags, dates, prayer rugs and gifts Air for the urgent, sea groupage for what can wait
The trader and shop owner Abayas, perfumes, housewares and spare parts A full container, or air for samples
The company and contractor Equipment, machinery and utility vehicles Flat rack or RoRo after a dimensions study

Why is Jeddah the Kingdom’s nearest quay to Tunisia?

Tunisia lies on the southern shore of the Mediterranean, and the sea gate to it from the Kingdom is the Suez Canal. Jeddah is the largest Saudi port on the Red Sea, so a ship leaving it heads north to the canal without crossing the Arabian Sea and Bab el-Mandeb as ships from Gulf ports do. That difference is counted in days, not hours. And if your shipment is already in Jeddah it is minutes from the quay, and the container comes to your door instead of your belongings travelling hundreds of kilometres to catch it.

Point of comparison Shipping from Jeddah Shipping from an inland city or a Gulf port
Reaching the quay A run inside the city A long road haul before the port
The ship’s heading North to Suez directly Round the Arabian Peninsula first
Loading the container In front of your home or warehouse In a distant yard or after re-handling
Air freight An international airport in the city with flights to Tunis Mostly a connection through another airport

From Jeddah port to the port of Rades: the stages of the sea voyage

From Jeddah port to the port of Rades

The voyage is three connected seas: the Red Sea up to Suez, then the canal, then the Mediterranean westwards to the Gulf of Tunis. A direct sailing between the two ports is not available every week, so the container usually changes ship at a Mediterranean hub port before it continues to Rades. We choose the line that combines the nearest sailing date with the shortest wait at the transhipment port. These are the stages in order:

Stage What happens in it Approximate time
Collection and packing in Jeddah Dismantling, packing and a numbered inventory, then loading the container or moving to the warehouse 1 to 3 days
Export from Jeddah Islamic Port The export declaration and the container entering the yard before the vessel’s cut-off 2 to 4 days
Red Sea and Suez Canal Sailing north, then crossing the canal in the ship convoy 3–5 days
Mediterranean and the transhipment port Changing ship at a hub port if the line is not direct 5–12 days
Berthing at Rades Discharging the container and lodging the customs declaration 2 to 4 days
Clearance and delivery Inspection, then release, then a truck to the consignee’s city 3–6 days

The port of Rades sits about 10 km south-east of the capital, and most of the country’s containers and RoRo trailers pass through it. It can be congested in some periods, with ships waiting their turn at anchor, which is why we give you a time with a margin and do not promise a fixed day. The ports are introduced on the ports and gateways page.

Shipping methods from Jeddah to Tunisia and the time each takes

There are two real methods on this route: sea and air. The choice between them is settled by three questions: how large the shipment is, when you need it, and what it is worth. What fills a room goes by sea, and what can be carried by hand and is expected within days goes by air. The times below run from the sender’s door in Jeddah to the consignee’s door, not from the moment of take-off or sailing:

Method Approximate time Suits
Full container by sea 20–35 days A whole home, a car, a trader’s goods
Groupage by sea 30–45 days Cartons, one or two rooms, luggage that is not urgent
A car on RoRo 20–35 days depending on the sailing available Running cars and utility vehicles
Air freight 3–7 days Parcels, pilgrims’ bags, samples, spare parts
Documents by express 2–4 days Contracts, certificates and official papers

As for the land route, we do not rely on it. A truck would have to cross Egypt and then the length of Libya to the Ras Jedir crossing, and the border procedures on that road keep changing. If you are offered land freight to Tunisia, ask about the route in detail before you hand over your belongings.

What lengthens the time?

  • Filling the groupage container: it is not closed until it is full, and your shipment may wait a week in the warehouse.
  • The transhipment port: if the container misses the onward vessel it waits for the next one.
  • Congestion at Rades: ships waiting for a berth add days in the peak seasons.
  • An incomplete FCR file: the car stays in the port until the privilege papers are completed.
  • Jeddah’s seasons: Ramadan and Hajj raise demand for trucks and for air capacity.
  • The community’s summer return: the summer months are the peak for shipping to Tunisia, and late booking delays the sailing.

Shipping prices from Jeddah to Tunisia

The bill on this route has three parts: what is paid in Jeddah for collection, packing and export; the sea or air freight; and what is paid in Tunisia for clearance and delivery. The first part is small because the port and the airport are in the city. The table shows where our prices start for each type, and the final figure is set once the volume and the consignee’s city are known:

What you ship Method Price starts from
One carton Sea groupage SAR 140
Per kilogram for heavy goods Sea groupage SAR 9.2
Cubic metre Part-load sea freight SAR 415
Smallest load accepted Minimum for a sea shipment SAR 1,380
A complete bedroom Part-load sea freight SAR 1,650
Small car Shared container or RoRo SAR 3,220
20ft container Full container to the Tunisian port SAR 4,600
40ft container Full container to the Tunisian port SAR 5,200
Air kilogram From King Abdulaziz Airport SAR 28
Document envelope Express SAR 83
Clearance and delivery inside Tunisia By city and type of goods Set on request

Prices circulating in the market for shipping to Tunisia are higher than that and very far apart. The air kilogram is offered between SAR 30 and SAR 60, and reaches SAR 130 with some. The sea kilogram runs between SAR 10 and SAR 20, a parcel from SAR 300, household goods from SAR 2,800, and a container between SAR 6,500 and SAR 9,000. Sea freight moves with the shipping lines, so the figure we send you is fixed on the day the booking is confirmed. Container rates are compared in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.

Factor How it changes the price
Volume The cubic metre is the unit of charge at sea. Estimate it with the CBM calculator before you call
Method An air kilogram costs several times its sea counterpart, so it is chosen only for the urgent and the light
Consignee’s city Tunis and Nabeul are near Rades; Gabes, Medenine and Tataouine add a long road haul
Scope of service To the Rades quay only, or with clearance and delivery to the door
Packing and dismantling Furniture that is dismantled and well packed takes less volume and arrives intact
Season Summer and the run-up to Ramadan and the Eids mean higher freight and less space

How do you lower the cost?

  • Book a month before summer; the return of the Tunisian community lifts sea freight every year.
  • Dismantle wardrobes and beds before measuring, because an assembled piece is charged with its empty space.
  • Pool your cartons with Tunisian colleagues in one shipment so that together you pass the minimum.
  • If your shipment approaches 12 cubic metres, ask for the 20ft container price and compare it with the per-metre price.
  • Send clothes and books by sea, and leave for the air what you really need in your first week.

Sea freight from Jeddah to Tunisia: full container or groupage?

A full container is booked for you alone. It arrives on a truck at your address in Jeddah, is loaded and sealed with a number written on the bill of lading, and the seal is broken only in Tunisia in front of customs. In groupage you pay only for the space you occupy, and your belongings travel with other customers’ shipments in one container that is sorted at the agent’s warehouse in Tunisia. The first is faster with less handling, and the second is cheaper for small volumes.

Item Full container Groupage
Unit of charge The container by size The cubic metre or the carton
Time 20–35 days 30–45 days
Loading place At your door in Jeddah The consolidation warehouse after collection from you
Number of handlings Two: loading and unloading Four or more
When to choose it From 12 cubic metres upwards, or a car Less than that
Price starts from SAR 4,600 for a 20ft SAR 415 per cubic metre

When is the sea the right choice?

  • When you are moving the contents of a whole flat or villa to Tunisia.
  • When you are shipping a car or a utility vehicle.
  • When the commercial goods come on pallets or in dozens of cartons.
  • When the shipment includes heavy appliances such as fridges, washing machines and air conditioners.
  • When waiting three or four weeks does not hurt you in return for a cost far below air.

A 20ft container takes about 28 cubic metres, which on average is the furniture of a three-room flat. The 40ft size takes close to 58 cubic metres, enough for a large house or a car with furniture alongside. Internal dimensions are on the container sizes page, and the service is explained in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.

Shipping furniture and household goods from Jeddah to Tunisia

On this route household furniture goes through at least six handlings between the bedroom in Jeddah and the bedroom in Tunisia, and spends weeks in between inside a steel box whose humidity rises at sea. Packing meant for a move within the city is therefore not good enough. We dismantle the large pieces, keep what breaks away from what is heavy, and write each carton’s number and contents in Arabic and French so the customs officer can match it easily.

  • Survey: by photos or a visit, to work out the cubic metres and settle the container size.
  • Dismantling: beds, wardrobes and dining tables, with a numbered bag of screws taped to its piece.
  • Wood and upholstery: moving blankets, then a tight plastic wrap that keeps out humidity and rubbing.
  • Glass, mirrors and screens: bubble wrap and cardboard corners, and a wooden crate for large pieces.
  • Appliances: the fridge and washing machine are drained and dried a day ahead, and their moving parts secured.
  • Stowing in the container: heavy items at the bottom, gaps filled, and the load strapped to the wall rings.
  • In Tunisia: unloading and carrying up to the floor, and reassembly if you ask for it.

Important note: the thin carton you find at the grocer’s does not survive a sea voyage. It softens with humidity and collapses under what is on top of it. Use double-wall cartons, and do not put liquids or opened foodstuffs among the furniture. Electricity in Tunisia is 230 volts at 50 hertz and its sockets take two round pins, so your appliances mostly work there with a simple plug adapter; check the rating plate of appliances with motors. Service details are on the furniture shipping page, and packing methods in the packing guide.

Shipping Umrah belongings and gifts from Jeddah to Tunisia

Shipping Umrah belongings and gifts from Jeddah to Tunisia

A Tunisian pilgrim usually leaves from Jeddah airport, and the bag allowance on the aircraft does not cover what he bought in Makkah and Madinah. The answer is to travel with a cabin bag and leave the rest to us. Our representative comes to his residence in Jeddah or his hotel in Makkah, weighs the pieces, packs them, sticks on each one a numbered tag with his name and Tunisian phone number, and hands him a receipt with their count. After that the shipment is delivered to his home in Tunisia, not at the airport.

Item Can it be shipped? Note
Dates Yes In their sealed packs, and in gift quantities rather than trade quantities
Prayer rugs, prayer beads and abayas Yes Pressed into double-wall cartons to cut the volume
Perfumes, oud oil and incense By sea, yes Restricted by air, and packed with a barrier against leaks
Copies of the Quran and books Yes Heavy, so the sea is cheaper for them
Small devices and phones Yes Declared at their value; anything with a battery has air conditions
Zamzam water No It is not exported inside shipments; the traveller carries his dedicated pack from the airport

Whoever wants his gifts before the well-wishers call chooses air, and they arrive within a week. Whoever is in no hurry puts them in the groupage container at a price that starts from SAR 140 per carton. For Umrah and Hajj groups we arrange a group collection from the hotel on a single day before departure.

Shipping parcels and personal luggage

Not every shipment is a home or a car. Much of what leaves Jeddah for Tunisia is two or three cartons: children’s clothes, kitchenware, a laptop for a student, medicines for a mother with their prescription. These are charged by the carton or the kilogram, and your urgency decides whether they board the aircraft or the ship.

  • By sea per carton: from SAR 140, provided it weighs no more than 30 kg so it can be carried by hand without tearing.
  • By sea by weight: from SAR 9.2 per kilogram for heavy goods of small volume.
  • By air: from SAR 28 per kilogram, and documents from SAR 83.
  • Address: the consignee’s name matching his identity card, the governorate, delegation and street, and a Tunisian phone number that is answered.
  • Value: declare it as it is; customs assesses duties on what it sees, not on what was written, if the two differ.

The service is explained on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping commercial goods from Jeddah to Tunisia

Jeddah has old wholesale markets around Al-Balad and Bab Makkah, and import warehouses in the south of the city near the port. The Tunisian trader buys abayas, perfumes, housewares and spare parts from them, then needs someone to gather his purchases from several suppliers into one shipment with a tidy invoice. We collect from shops and warehouses directly, match the count against the invoice before packing, and prepare the file the importer in Tunisia asks for.

Goods Usual method What is required with it
Clothing, abayas and fabrics Cartons and bales in groupage or a container A packing list with count, weight and country of manufacture
Perfumes and cosmetics By sea in leak-proof packing A statement of ingredients; they may be subject to technical control on import
Dates and packaged foods Dry or refrigerated container Health certificate, certificate of origin and sufficient shelf life
Appliances and electronics By sea for quantities, by air for high value An invoice with models and serial numbers
Car spare parts Pallets by sea, air for the urgent part Part numbers and country of origin
Plastics and industrial materials Full container A Saudi certificate of origin to benefit from any customs preference in force

What the trader prepares before shipping:

  • The number of cartons and the exact weight and dimensions of each line.
  • A commercial invoice and a packing list that truly match the goods.
  • The Tunisian importer’s customs code and commercial register.
  • Packing that withstands stacking inside the container.
  • Splitting the shipment: the quantity by sea, and samples and what the customer is waiting for by air.

For the regular importer we fix a single monthly schedule that tells him the container closing date in advance. Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Car shipping from Jeddah to Tunisia: three ways from the Islamic Port

Most cars on this route belong to Tunisians taking them home for good, and a few are bought from Jeddah showrooms for import. The advantage here is that the car is in the same city as the quay, so no long transporter fee is paid. It is shipped in one of three ways that differ in protection, freight and sailing date:

Method How the car is shipped Who it suits
Dedicated container One car in a 20ft container, or two in a 40ft, with the wheels strapped and chocked and the container then sealed A new or valuable car, and anyone shipping furniture with it in a 40ft container
Shared container Several cars for more than one customer in a 40ft container on securing racks, with the freight divided among them A mid-value car, and anyone not hurt by waiting for the container to fill
RoRo The car goes up under its own engine onto the vehicle carrier, is lashed on its deck, and comes down the same way at the Tunisian port A running, completely empty car, and light trucks and buses

The price starts from SAR 3,220 for a small car. RoRo depends on a vehicle carrier calling at Jeddah bound for Tunisia on a suitable date; if there is none, the container is the way. The full comparison is on the container car shipping and RoRo car shipping pages, and in the article sea car shipping from Jeddah.

The FCR tax privilege and the conditions for importing a car into Tunisia

The question that comes before shipping is: will this car enter Tunisia, and at what duties? For most of our customers the answer lies in the final-return scheme known for short as FCR. It is a privilege Tunisia grants its citizen living abroad when he returns to settle, letting him import one car with an exemption or a large reduction. These are its broad lines as practised, and we match what is in force for you before any payment:

Condition The practice
Beneficiary A Tunisian aged 18 or over who lived abroad for at least two years before returning
Time spent in Tunisia No more than 183 days a year during the residence period counted
Age of the car Five years at most, counted from the date of first registration until it enters the Tunisian port
Weight A gross weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes
Full-exemption option Special plates bearing the code RS, and the car is not sold or transferred without a settlement with customs
Part-payment option Payment of a reduced share of the duties that varies with engine size and fuel type, registered on ordinary plates
Repeat benefit Restricted by a period between one privilege and the next; customs clarifications have addressed more than one family member benefiting

Warning: the two mistakes repeated most are counting the age from the model year instead of the date of first registration, and buying a car that is a month or two short of five years so that it passes the ceiling while at sea. Leave a margin that covers the whole sailing and clearance time. Anyone importing outside this scheme pays the duties and taxes in full on value and engine size; they are high and mostly not worthwhile. Send us the date of first registration, the engine size and your residence status before you buy. The general guide is on the car shipping guide page.

The car file: Jeddah papers and Tunisian customs papers

A car needs two files, not one. The first is Saudi, taking it off the traffic records and authorising its export; the second is Tunisian, bringing it in and registering it. A gap in either stops the car at one of the two ports. We complete the first in Jeddah before the car enters the port, and guide you through the second while you wait for the ship.

Document Where it is issued Why it is required
Vehicle registration or a notarised sale contract Jeddah Proof of ownership and its date
Purchase invoice The showroom or the seller It carries the model, the chassis number and the value on which duties are assessed
Export certificate and export plates Jeddah traffic department Removing the car from the register after fines are paid
Proof of the date of first registration From the car’s documents The age in the import condition is counted from it
The sender’s residence permit and the beneficiary’s passport and identity card Both parties Matching the name on the bill of lading and the declaration
Bill of lading The shipping line after sailing The title for receiving the car at Rades
The privilege application and proofs of residence abroad Tunisian customs The FCR file for whoever qualifies

The car’s journey from Jeddah to Tunisia in nine steps

  1. Matching: we review the date of first registration, the engine size and the beneficiary’s status, and confirm the car is accepted before you pay anything.
  2. Collection: a flatbed takes it from your home or the showroom in Jeddah, and we photograph it outside and inside with the odometer reading.
  3. Export: paying the fines, then dropping the plates, then the export certificate.
  4. Entering the Islamic Port: the export declaration and inspection by Saudi customs.
  5. Securing: inside the container with straps and chocks, or on the RoRo vessel’s deck, and the bill of lading is issued in the beneficiary’s name.
  6. Sailing: you follow the ship by the container or bill of lading number through the canal and then the Mediterranean.
  7. Berthing at Rades: our agent lodges the customs declaration and opens the import file.
  8. Inspection and test: weighing the car and matching its chassis number, and completing the privilege file for whoever qualifies.
  9. The grey card and the plates: paying what is due and then registering, so the car leaves in full order for your governorate.
Cost item What controls it Where the saving is
The transporter inside Jeddah The car’s distance from the port A short run folded into the service
Sea freight The method, the car’s size and the season The shared container, and booking before the summer peak
Export papers and bill of lading Traffic department and shipping line procedures Included in the all-in price
Customs duties The privilege or full duties Planning for FCR entitlement is the biggest saving
Rades port charges Handling, storage and the agent’s fees A file ready before berthing stops storage building up
Marine insurance The value of the car A small premium not to be dropped for a valuable car

Luxury and classic cars and utility vehicles

A low-slung or rare car is not treated like a family car, and a light truck does not always fit through the door of a standard container. Each has an arrangement we agree once we know the dimensions and the value.

  • Luxury and sports cars: a container of their own that is not shared, a low-angle loading ramp, and padded straps on the wheels rather than the body.
  • Classics: a detailed photographed condition report before closing, and insurance at market rather than book value.
  • Light trucks and buses: on the RoRo vessel when available, charged by the linear or cubic metre.
  • Equipment and out-of-gauge dimensions: a flat rack after calculating the weight and lashing points. Details are on the heavy equipment shipping page.
  • Utility vehicles: their import regime in Tunisia differs from passenger cars, so we review it with the agent before booking.
  • Before handing over any vehicle: a quarter tank of fuel or less, a sound battery, inflated tyres, and no personal belongings on RoRo.

Documents and customs clearance in Tunisia

Customs in Tunisia is called the Douane, and the declaration is lodged by a licensed agent in the consignee’s name. The container is inspected at Rades, then the duties and value added tax are assessed, its general rate in practice being 19%, and then the release order is issued. Someone returning for good brings in personal effects and used furniture with an exemption within a value ceiling that customs sets and that changes, so we confirm what is in force before shipping. The papers required differ by type of shipment:

Type of shipment Papers What we point out
Furniture and effects of a final returnee A detailed inventory, the passport with all its pages, proof of residence abroad, and the bill of lading Used belongings in the quantity of one home; new items in their boxes may attract duties
Cartons and gifts for a resident of Tunisia An inventory with contents and value, and the consignee’s identity card Subject to duties by type and value
Commercial goods Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, and the importer’s customs code Many product lines go through technical control on import
Car Registration, purchase invoice, export certificate, bill of lading, and the FCR file if any The date of first registration is the reference
Air shipment Air waybill and a statement of contents and value Cleared at Tunis-Carthage Airport

We review the whole file in Jeddah before the shipment moves; correcting a name on the bill of lading here takes minutes, and correcting it after sailing costs a fee and days. Each paper is explained on the required documents page, and the stages of the procedure on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to Tunisia or needs a licence

Some items are banned by the country of arrival, some are banned by the air carrier rather than the law, and some enter with a prior licence. Knowing this before packing spares you the confiscation of the item or the whole container being held up because of it.

Item Ruling
Narcotics and psychotropic substances Strictly prohibited
Weapons, ammunition and fireworks Prohibited without an official licence
Tunisian dinars in cash Neither brought in nor taken out inside shipments
Drones With a prior licence from the Tunisian authorities, and seized without it
Radio equipment and satellite phones With a prior licence
Medicines In personal-use quantity with the prescription
Plants, seeds and animal products With phytosanitary or veterinary certificates
Counterfeit goods Seized and destroyed
Batteries, perfumes and aerosols Accepted by sea, restricted in air freight
Zamzam water Not shipped from the Kingdom

The general list is on the prohibited items page. Whatever you do not find there, photograph it and send it to us before you put it in the carton.

Delivery across Tunisian cities

Delivery across Tunisian cities

After the release order the shipment leaves Rades on a truck for the consignee’s address. Cities near the capital are delivered on the day of release or the next, and the southern cities need an extra day or two. We always ask about the floor and the width of the street before sending the truck, because a large truck cannot enter the lanes of the old medinas and we swap it for a smaller vehicle. These are the main destinations:

City Approximate distance from Rades Delivery note
Tunis, Ariana, Ben Arous and Manouba 10–25 km Fast delivery after release
Nabeul and Hammamet About 65 km A truck the same day in most cases
Bizerte About 70 km It has its own port, and is served from Rades too
Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia 140–200 km The Sahel cities, a day after release
Kairouan About 155 km Added to the Sahel run
Sfax About 270 km The port of Sfax is considered for full containers
Gabes, Medenine, Djerba and Tataouine 400–530 km One to two extra days
Gafsa and Tozeur 340–430 km By prior arrangement with the consignee
Beja, Jendouba and El Kef 100–175 km The north-western cities, a run once orders fill

Write the address in the Tunisian form: the governorate, then the delegation, then the district, street and house number, with a phone number the consignee answers in the daytime. Service to the door is explained on the door-to-door shipping page.

Air freight from Jeddah to Tunisia

Air freight from Jeddah to Tunisia

An aircraft covers the distance between Jeddah and Tunis in about four hours, and there are direct flights between the two airports that increase in the Umrah and Hajj seasons. The shipment leaves the cargo village at King Abdulaziz International Airport and arrives at Tunis-Carthage Airport, then is cleared and delivered to the address. Door to door takes between 3 and 7 days, most of it taken by Tunisian clearance. It is the right route for anything light and urgent, or valuable.

What goes by air Price starts from Note
Parcels and cartons SAR 28 per kilogram On the greater of actual and volumetric weight
Pilgrims’ bags and excess luggage SAR 28 per kilogram Collected from the residence and delivered to the home
Documents and official papers SAR 83 By express within 2–4 days
Commercial samples and spare parts SAR 28 per kilogram With an invoice showing it is a sample or a replacement part
  • Volumetric weight: length × width × height in centimetres divided by 6,000. Try it in the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Air packing: a carton sized to its contents with no spare space, because every extra centimetre is charged.
  • Restricted: perfumes, aerosols and loose lithium batteries, which have their own packing and declaration.
  • What it does not suit: furniture and large appliances, whose air cost exceeds their value.
  • Other airports: what is bound for Sfax, Djerba or Monastir is mostly cleared at Carthage and then moved by road.

The service is explained on the air freight page and in the article air freight office in Jeddah.

We collect from houses, furnished flats, warehouses, showrooms and offices. The packing team brings its own materials, and the arrival hour is set by the district and its traffic. The container truck enters the modern northern districts easily, while for the old city centre we use a smaller vehicle that shuttles to the container.

Zone Districts or cities Note
North Jeddah Obhur, Al-Mohammadiyah, Al-Naeem, Al-Salamah, Al-Zahra, Al-Shati, Al-Basateen The container is loaded at the door in most of them

East and south Jeddah Al-Safa, Al-Samer, Al-Naseem, Al-Jamiah, Quwaizah, Prince Fawaz, Al-Khumrah Close to the port warehouses

If your home in Tunisia is not ready, or you are gathering purchases from several shops, the shipment stays numbered in our Jeddah warehouse until you give the word to send it. Details are on the storage page and in the article international shipping companies in Jeddah.

Steps for shipping from Jeddah to Tunisia with Home Safe

  1. Send the details: photos or a list of the belongings, your district in Jeddah, and the Tunisian governorate you are shipping to.
  2. Assessment: we work out volume and weight, and decide whether you need a container, space in a groupage container, or air freight.
  3. Price: it reaches you itemised: collection and packing, freight, and clearance and delivery in Tunisia.
  4. Booking: we fix the collection day and ask for copies of the ID and the consignee’s details.
  5. Collection and packing: at your location, with a numbered inventory in two copies, one of which you sign.
  6. Export: the export declaration, then entry to the port or the airport cargo village.
  7. The journey: you hold the container or bill of lading number, and get a message at every move.
  8. Clearance and delivery: our agent in Tunisia completes the customs procedure, then the shipment reaches the door and is checked against the inventory.

Tracking and insurance for Tunisia shipments

The longest silent spell on this voyage is the days at the transhipment port, when the container comes off one ship and waits for another. On those days in particular we send you the name of the onward vessel and its expected date, so you do not think the shipment is lost. Before and after that, the container number is enough for you to see it on the shipping line’s website.

  • What you track with: a reference number from collection day, then the container and bill of lading numbers after sailing. The method is on the track your shipment page.
  • Notification points: entry to Jeddah port, sailing, crossing Suez, transhipment, berthing at Rades, release, and out for delivery.
  • Insurance: optional, at a percentage of the value you declare, covering the sea voyage and handling. We advise it for a car and a whole home. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.
  • Evidence in a dispute: the pre-packing photos and the signed inventory, and a report written at delivery if a shortage or breakage appears.

Shipping from Tunisia to Jeddah

A Tunisian coming to work in Jeddah ships his books, clothes and some furniture with him, and the Saudi trader imports olive oil, Deglet Nour dates, harissa and ceramics from Tunisia. The route is the same in reverse: collection from the address in Tunisia, then Rades, then Suez, then Jeddah Islamic Port. Used personal effects enter the Kingdom with an inventory and a copy of the residence permit or visa. Commercial foodstuffs are registered with the Kingdom’s competent food authority and are subject to its duties and tax, so we review the conditions for the product before loading it.

Tips before shipping your belongings from Jeddah to Tunisia

  • Start arranging six weeks before your travel date if the shipment is by sea, so it arrives days after you rather than a month.
  • Write the inventory in Arabic and French, the second being the language of the customs declaration in Tunisia.
  • Keep your old passport if it was renewed; its stamps prove how long you lived abroad.
  • Do not mix new boxed items with used ones, and declare every new appliance on its own.
  • Photograph the car and the furniture before handover, and email the photos to yourself to preserve their date.
  • Do not put your official papers and certificates in the container; carry them with you on the aircraft.
  • Appoint someone to receive for you in Tunisia by a written power of attorney if the shipment will arrive before you.

How do you choose a shipping company from Jeddah to Tunisia?

The difference between one offer and another does not show in the figure alone, but in what the person offering asks you before pricing. Someone who knows the route asks about your governorate, your return status and your car’s registration date. Someone who does not gives you a price per kilo and the conversation ends.

The question A reassuring answer An answer that calls for caution
How does the shipment arrive? By sea to Rades or by air to Carthage, with transhipment mentioned “By road within a week”
Who clears in Tunisia? A licensed agent whose name and number are given “The consignee sorts it out”
What about my car? Asks for the date of first registration and explains FCR “Any car gets in”
What does the price include? Written items: Jeddah, the sea, Tunisia A total figure with no breakdown
Where are you based? An address in Jeddah and a commercial registration that can be checked A WhatsApp number only
What proves my belongings? A numbered inventory in two copies, and photos “Don’t worry”

Common mistakes when shipping from Jeddah to Tunisia

  • Buying a car before counting its age from the date of first registration.
  • Sending the container before the final-return papers are complete, so it stands at Rades at your expense.
  • Packing Zamzam, Tunisian dinars or a drone inside the cartons.
  • Writing only “personal belongings” in the inventory instead of itemising the pieces.
  • Booking at the height of summer for a shipment meant to arrive before that same summer ends.
  • Choosing air for heavy appliances and then objecting to the volumetric weight.
  • Leaving a Saudi phone number for the consignee, so the delivery driver in Tunisia cannot reach him.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Jeddah to Tunisia

How much does shipping from Jeddah to Tunisia cost?

The smallest item on our list is a single carton, which starts from SAR 140 inside the groupage container. Next comes the cubic metre from SAR 415, then a bedroom from SAR 1,650 and a small car from SAR 3,220. A full container starts from SAR 4,600 for a 20ft and SAR 5,200 for a 40ft, and an air kilogram from SAR 28. Upload photos of your shipment on WhatsApp 0552803439 and the figure reaches you itemised for the consignee’s Tunisian city.

How long does a shipment take from Jeddah to reach Tunisia?

A full container needs 20 to 35 days, counted from the loading day in Jeddah until it leaves the port of Rades. Groupage is longer, between 30 and 45 days, because the container waits for other shipments before it is closed. An air parcel arrives in 3 to 7 days, clearance at Tunis-Carthage Airport included.

Which Tunisian port does the container head for?

The usual destination is the port of Rades, south-east of the capital, the country’s first container port. When the consignee is in the south or the Sahel we ask the shipping line about Sfax, Sousse or Bizerte, and pick whatever shortens the road leg after clearance.

Do you ship a car from Jeddah to Tunisia?

Yes, inside a container of its own, in a 40ft container it shares with other cars, or on a RoRo vessel if a sailing fits your date. The price starts from SAR 3,220 for a small car. Before booking we ask for its date of first registration so we can match it against the Tunisian age condition.

What is the FCR tax privilege in brief?

A facility the Tunisian state grants its citizen living abroad on final return, under which one car is imported free of duties or at a reduced share of them. The practice is that residence abroad is at least two years and the car is no more than five years from the date of first registration. These conditions are revised with the finance laws, so we confirm what is in force before you buy.

Is a returning Tunisian’s furniture exempt from duties?

Personal effects and used household furniture enter exempt under the final return, within a value ceiling that customs sets and that changes. You need a detailed inventory of the contents and proof of your residence abroad, and the belongings must be used and in the quantity of one home.

Do you ship the bags of Tunisian Umrah and Hajj pilgrims?

Yes. Our representative takes the bags and cartons from the residence in Jeddah or the hotel in Makkah, fixes a numbered tag on every piece, and they are then delivered to the pilgrim’s home in Tunisia. Zamzam water is outside the service because exporting it inside shipments is not permitted.

Is there land freight from Jeddah to Tunisia?

We do not offer it as a regular service. The road crosses Egypt and then the whole of Libya before the Tunisian border, and its crossings and procedures are not stable. The route therefore rests on the sea for large volumes and on the air for what is urgent.

Is the charge by weight or by volume?

At sea, volume is the basis: by the cubic metre in groupage, and by container size for a full container. In the air the airline charges you on the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight, so a large light carton is charged by its dimensions.

Who pays the customs duties in Tunisia?

The Tunisian consignee pays them. Our agent at the port lodges the declaration and attends the inspection, then sends him the amount due before payment. Someone returning for good submits the privilege file, and his effects and car are treated under it.

Which papers do I prepare before collection day?

A copy of your ID or residence permit in Jeddah, the consignee’s name as on his identity card with his address and Tunisian phone number, and an inventory of the contents. Commercial goods add an invoice, a packing list and a certificate of origin, and a car adds the registration, the purchase invoice and the export certificate.

Can belongings be placed inside the shipped car?

In a dedicated container that is possible, provided the belongings are written in the inventory and declared to customs. On a RoRo vessel nothing is accepted inside the car. We remind anyone returning under FCR that his effects are declared in their own file, separate from the car’s file.

Do you collect from Makkah, Taif and Madinah?

Yes. Shipments from Makkah, Taif, Rabigh, Yanbu and Madinah are gathered by closed truck and moved to our warehouse in Jeddah, and from it to the port or the airport. The nearest is Makkah, at about 80 km.

Do you keep the shipment until I travel?

Yes. Your belongings stay in our Jeddah warehouse, inventoried and numbered, until you set your arrival date in Tunisia. We then time the sailing to it, so that the container does not wait for you at Rades and build up storage charges.

Do you work in the opposite direction, from Tunisia to Jeddah?

Yes. Our agent collects from the address in Tunisia, and the shipment sails from Rades to Jeddah Islamic Port or is loaded by air from Carthage. It is cleared in Jeddah and then delivered in the city or in Makkah and Taif.
