Who ships from Riyadh to Tunisia, and what do they ship?
Riyadh has a Tunisian community of doctors, engineers, teachers and restaurant and hotel staff, and most shipments on this lane come out of their homes. Some are going back for good and ship a whole household and a car; others send cartons to their families every season. Alongside them are traders loading Saudi goods for the Tunisian market. The table shows what suits each:
| The shipper | What they mostly ship | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
| A Tunisian family returning for good | Household furniture, appliances, books and clothes | A 20ft or 40ft container sealed in Riyadh |
| A returnee bringing a car under FCR | One car, sometimes with belongings | A private or shared container, or RoRo |
| A resident sending to family | Cartons of clothes, gifts and household items | Groupage by the cubic metre |
| A student or an employee whose contract has ended | Suitcases, books and a computer | Groupage, or air if time is short |
| A trader or exporter | Dates, plastic products, household items and spare parts | A full container, or a tonne in a shared container |
| Someone with urgent paperwork | Certificates, contracts and samples | Express air freight |
How does a shipment sail from a city with no sea?
Riyadh sits in the heart of Najd, and the nearest coast is hundreds of kilometres away. Every sea shipment from it therefore starts with a road or rail leg inside the Kingdom before it ever sees a ship. We have two doors to the sea, and we choose between them on each booking by the sailing date and the total time, not by distance alone.
| Comparison | Via Jeddah Islamic Port | Via King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam |
|---|---|---|
| The inland leg from Riyadh | A truck on the motorway, about 950 km | A container train from the Dry Port, or a truck, about 400 km |
| The vessel’s course | The Red Sea, then straight into the Suez Canal | The Arabian Gulf, then round the Arabian Peninsula before entering the Red Sea |
| Effect on the time | A shorter sailing to the Mediterranean | Extra days at sea |
| When we choose it | For most Tunisia shipments | When an earlier vessel is available or the goods are in the Eastern Province |
Riyadh Dry Port receives containers and completes their export formalities, after which they travel by rail to Dammam. It is useful for a trader loading from a warehouse in the industrial city. For household furniture and cars, though, the Jeddah road is shorter in total days, which is why most of our shipments take it. Either way we book the container’s slot on the vessel before the truck moves out of Riyadh, so that it does not sit in the port yard running up storage charges. The gateways are described on the ports and gateways page.
Stages of the journey and transit time from Riyadh to Tunisia
The time we quote you runs from your door in Riyadh to the consignee’s door in Tunisia, not just the days at sea. The journey has five stages, and each takes its share of the time:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Preparation in Riyadh | Survey, packing, inventory and loading | 1 to 3 days |
| Transport to the port | Truck to Jeddah and handover of the container at the quay | 2 to 4 days |
| Export and waiting for the vessel | Export declaration and the sailing date | 2–6 days |
| The sailing | Red Sea, Suez, then the Mediterranean, direct or with transhipment at an intermediate port | Roughly two to three weeks |
| Clearance and delivery in Tunisia | Customs declaration and inspection, then a truck to the address | 3–7 days |
| Method | Door-to-door time | Suits |
|---|---|---|
| Full container | 20–35 days | A whole home, wholesale goods, a car with furniture |
| Groupage | 30–45 days | Cartons and one or two rooms |
| RoRo for vehicles | 22–38 days | A running car driven onto the vessel |
| Air freight | 3–7 days | Documents, parcels and spare parts |
What lengthens the time?
- Transhipment: many lines do not call at Rades directly, so the container is moved to a smaller vessel at a Mediterranean port.
- Filling the shared container: your shipment waits for other people’s until the container is full.
- Congestion at Rades: the port takes most of Tunisia’s containers, and the queue grows at certain periods.
- An incomplete file at customs: a list with no values, or a name that does not match the passport, halts the release.
- The summer season: Tunisians returning from abroad push up demand for vessels and clearing agents alike.
Transit times across destinations are compared on the transit times page.
Shipping prices from Riyadh to Tunisia
A shipping bill from Riyadh has three lines: road transport to the port, the vessel or aircraft charge, and whatever services you ask for in Tunisia, such as clearance and delivery. We write each line separately so you can see where your money goes. These are the prices our services start from:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| A carton | Sea groupage | SAR 140 |
| A cubic metre | Sea groupage | SAR 415 |
| Electrical appliances and a kitchen | Sea freight | SAR 1,655 |
| A majlis or lounge suite | Sea freight | SAR 1,840 |
| A complete bedroom | Sea freight | SAR 2,575 |
| A tonne of commercial goods | In a shared container | SAR 2,300 |
| A saloon car | Sea | SAR 5,335 |
| A 4×4 | Sea | SAR 5,980 |
| A luxury car | Private container | SAR 7,545 |
| A 20ft container | Ocean freight from Jeddah port | SAR 4,600 |
| A 40ft container | Ocean freight from Jeddah port | SAR 5,200 |
| A 50 kg parcel | Air freight | SAR 1,105 |
| Per kilogram | Air freight | SAR 22 |
| Documents | Express | SAR 83 |
Prices circulating in the market on the Riyadh–Tunisia lane are higher than ours. A bedroom by sea is offered at SAR 2,800 to 3,500, a majlis at SAR 2,000 to 2,800, appliances and a kitchen at SAR 1,800 to 2,500, and a tonne of commercial goods at SAR 2,500 to 3,000. A saloon car by sea is offered at around SAR 5,800, a 4×4 at around SAR 6,500, and a luxury car at around SAR 8,200. By air, a fifty-kilogram parcel is offered at SAR 1,200 to 1,800, and the kilogram at SAR 30 to 60. Container rates move with the shipping lines, so we fix the figure on the booking day, and road transport from Riyadh to the port is added to it.
| What changes the price | How it works |
|---|---|
| Volume | Sea freight is charged by the cubic metre. Estimate it with the CBM calculator |
| Volumetric weight | Air freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Check it with the volumetric weight calculator |
| Transport from Riyadh | A truck of your own costs more than a place on our regular run to Jeddah |
| The Tunisian port | Rades is the base case, and others follow what the lines offer at booking time |
| Scope of service | To the Tunisian port, or to the consignee’s door with unloading and assembly |
| Season | Summer and the weeks before Ramadan and the Eids are busier |
How do you bring the cost down?
- Ask for the survey first; a volume guessed by eye usually comes out larger than the real one, and you pay for empty space.
- If your furniture fills less than half a container, groupage is cheaper than a container of your own.
- Tie your loading date to our regular run from Riyadh to Jeddah.
- Sell in Riyadh whatever is easy to buy in Tunisia for less than the cost of shipping it.
- Book a month ahead of summer, the season when Tunisians return and vessels fill up.
The pricing lines are explained more fully on the pricing factors page.
The survey in Riyadh before shipping to Tunisia

The survey is the first thing we do, and everything after it is built on it. The surveyor comes at a time that suits you, walks through the rooms, notes the large pieces and the likely number of cartons, and asks what you are leaving behind and what you are taking. He then turns that into a volume in cubic metres. Anyone short of time can send a video clip of each room and we calculate from those.
Once the volume is known we choose the container. This is a practical estimate to start from, which the surveyor then adjusts to what he saw in your home:
| What is in your home | Approximate volume | The right choice |
|---|---|---|
| Cartons and suitcases | 1–3 cubic metres | Groupage |
| A bedroom and a few appliances | 6–10 cubic metres | Groupage |
| A two- to three-bedroom flat | 20–28 cubic metres | A 20ft container |
| A villa or large house | 45–58 cubic metres | A 40ft container |
| A car plus the furniture of a flat | Worked out at the survey | A 40ft container |
On the same visit the surveyor looks at what is particular to your building: whether the lift takes the wardrobe, where the truck can stand, and when the district allows it in. He also asks about your position in Tunisia, returning for good or sending to family, because the customs file differs between the two. Container dimensions are on the container sizes page.
Shipping furniture and household goods from Riyadh to Tunisia
Furniture from a Riyadh home rides a truck for close to a thousand kilometres, is then craned onto a ship, and spends weeks in a closed container between Red Sea heat and Mediterranean damp. Packing here is prepared for a long sea voyage, not for a move between two districts. We dismantle the large pieces and number their parts, and wrap each piece according to its material:
- Wood and wardrobes: blankets, then corrugated cardboard and corner guards, with the screws in a bag tied to the piece itself.
- Glass, mirrors and marble: foam and reinforced cardboard, and a wooden crate for large pieces.
- Electrical appliances: moving parts are secured, and the washing machine and fridge are dried out a full day before loading.
- Sofas and mattresses: a tight plastic cover, with moisture-absorbing bags inside the container.
- Cartons: a number on every carton matching a line on the packing list, in Arabic and French.
A warning before you fill the cartons: do not put glass, screens or ornaments in the same carton as heavy tools. The container is lifted and lowered more than once between Riyadh and Rades, and what a carton survives in a local move it will not survive here. Do not put liquids or opened food among the furniture. Electricity in Tunisia is 230 volts at 50 hertz with European sockets, so make sure your appliances run on it before paying to ship them.
How we pack and secure is on the packing guide and furniture shipping pages.
A full container or groupage?
The question is settled by volume first and by date second. If your furniture fills more than half a container, a full container is cheaper and quicker for you. If your shipment is cartons or a single room, there is no sense in paying for a container that is half empty.
| Comparison | Full container | Groupage |
|---|---|---|
| What you pay for | The whole container | The cubic metres you occupy |
| Loading | Outside your home in Riyadh if the street allows, and sealed in your presence | At the consolidation warehouse with other shipments |
| Door-to-door time | 20–35 days | 30–45 days |
| Number of handlings | Fewer, as the container is not opened until Tunisia | More, because of consolidation and then sorting |
| Price starts from | SAR 4,600 for a 20ft container | SAR 415 per cubic metre |
When do you choose sea at all? When shipping the furniture of a flat or villa, a car, goods in quantity, or many cartons that can stand a wait. Everything else that is light and urgent belongs on an aircraft. The full comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page, and the service details on the sea freight page.
Parcels and personal belongings
Not every shipment is a household. Many of our customers in Riyadh send two or three cartons to their families in Tunisia before Eid or before the school year starts, or send their excess luggage ahead of their own flight. These shipments have two routes: a groupage container for those in no hurry, and an aircraft for those who want it within days.
- By sea: a carton from SAR 140, arriving in 30–45 days.
- By air: from SAR 22 per kilogram, and a 50 kg parcel from SAR 1,105.
- Documents: certificates, contracts and powers of attorney by express from SAR 83.
- Collection: from your home, accommodation or office in Riyadh, and we supply cartons on request.
- Personal character: customs looks at quantity, so ten identical new items are treated as trade.
Details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to Tunisia
A trader in Riyadh exports dates, plastic products, household items, clothing, spare parts and samples to Tunisia. The shipping method follows quantity and value: a full container for volume, a tonne or a cubic metre in a shared container for someone testing the market, and an aircraft for samples and anything high in value and low in weight. A tonne of goods in a shared container starts from SAR 2,300.
What does a commercial shipment need?
- A commercial invoice and a packing list that match the goods by item, count and weight.
- A certificate of origin from the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce, with which goods of Saudi origin may benefit from the Arab trade facilitation arrangements.
- A Tunisian importer registered with customs to receive in his own name.
- A check on technical control at import, as some items are inspected in Tunisia before release.
- A product label in Arabic or French for foodstuffs and cosmetics, and a health certificate where one is required.
- The delivery term agreed with the buyer: to the port of Rades or to his warehouse.
We go over the requirements for your product with the clearing agent in Tunisia before loading, because the list of items subject to control changes. The service for traders is on the commercial shipping page.
Car shipping from Riyadh to Tunisia

The car’s journey begins with a transporter that collects it from your home, the showroom or the auction yard in Riyadh and takes it down the road to Jeddah port. There it is shipped in one of three ways. Most of our customers on this lane are Tunisians taking their cars home under the tax privilege, and they prefer the closed container because it protects a car that represents years of their work.
| Method | How the car is shipped | For whom |
|---|---|---|
| Private container | One car in a 20ft container, or a car with furniture in a 40ft. The wheels are strapped down and chocked with timber, and the car is photographed before the door is closed and sealed | New and luxury cars, and anyone shipping belongings with the car |
| Shared container | Several customers’ cars in a 40ft container on securing racks, with the freight split between them | Mid-value cars, and those willing to wait for the container to fill |
| RoRo | The car is driven onto the deck of a vehicle carrier and driven off at the Tunisian port | Running cars and large vehicles, provided they are empty |
The price starts from SAR 5,335 for a saloon, from SAR 5,980 for a 4×4, and from SAR 7,545 for a luxury car in a private container. The two methods are compared on the container car shipping and RoRo car shipping pages.
Conditions for a car entering Tunisia, and the FCR scheme
The shipping is the easy part. The hard part is having the car accepted by Tunisian customs under the regime you budgeted for. Most cars coming from Riyadh enter under the tax privilege for those returning for good, known for short as FCR. This is a summary of the rules in force, and we go through the current ones with you before you buy:
| Item | The rule in force |
|---|---|
| The beneficiary | A Tunisian aged 18 or over, returning for good, who has not used the privilege before |
| Residence abroad | At least two years, without exceeding 183 days inside Tunisia in any one year |
| Age of the car | No more than five years at import, counted from the date of first registration |
| Weight | A vehicle with a gross weight of no more than 3.5 tonnes |
| Form of the privilege | Full exemption, or payment of a reduced share of the duties, depending on the option the beneficiary chooses |
| Disposing of the car | The privilege is personal and cannot be sold or assigned, and there are restrictions on transferring the car |
| Outside FCR | High duties and taxes calculated on value and engine size, so importing rarely pays |
| After release | A technical inspection, then the registration card and Tunisian plates |
There are three places where mistakes are made. The first is a car with a recent model year whose first registration is older than the limit. The second is a car close to the limit that passes it while at sea or waiting for clearance, so leave a margin of months. The third is relying on conditions heard from someone who returned years ago, when the conditions change with the finance laws. Send us the first-registration date and your expected return date, and we will match them against the rules in force at no charge.
Car documents and cost lines
The car’s file comes in two halves: one completed in Riyadh so that it is allowed to leave, and one prepared for Tunisia so that it is released there. We start on the first half the day we collect the car, and point you to the second so you can prepare it while the car is at sea and have your papers in hand when it arrives.
| Document | Where it is obtained | Why it is needed |
|---|---|---|
| Registration card, or sale contract and showroom invoice | Riyadh | Proof of ownership and value |
| Export certificate and export plates | The traffic department, after fines are paid and the plates surrendered | A condition for the car leaving the Kingdom |
| Proof of the first-registration date | From the car’s original records | Its age in Tunisia is counted from it |
| The sender’s ID or residence permit | Riyadh | For the export declaration |
| The consignee’s passport and identity card | Tunisia | For the customs declaration |
| Bill of lading | We issue it after sailing | No collection at the port without it |
| The privilege file | Tunisian customs | The application for the benefit and proof of the period lived abroad |
| Cost line | What sets it | How to economise |
|---|---|---|
| Transporter from Riyadh to the port | Distance and the size of the car | A transporter carrying more than one car on the same run |
| Ocean freight | The method, the car’s dimensions and the season | A shared container for ordinary cars |
| Export formalities | Traffic department and bill of lading | Included in the all-in service |
| Tunisian customs | Privilege or full duties | Confirming entitlement before buying |
| Charges at the arrival port | Handling, storage and the clearing agent’s fee | A file that is ready before the vessel berths |
The general guide is on the car shipping guide page.
Auction cars, luxury cars and utility vehicles
Riyadh’s car market is large, and many returnees buy their car there months before they leave. Each kind of purchase has something to watch for before paying:
- An auction car: the price is tempting, but ask about the first-registration date and whether anything on record would block the export certificate. We collect it from the yard as soon as the sale closes so that no storage is charged on it.
- A luxury car: a container to itself, padded straps on the wheels, and insurance for its full value.
- Utility vehicles: light trucks and buses come under a different import regime in Tunisia from passenger cars, so we ask about it before booking.
- Equipment: whatever will not fit a container goes on RoRo vessels or on a flat rack after its dimensions and weight are measured.
- Handover day: a quarter of a tank of fuel or less, a photograph of the odometer, and two copies of every document.
Details are on the car shipping and heavy equipment shipping pages.
Documents and clearance at Tunisian customs
Customs in Tunisia is called the Douane, and it expects what is in the container to match what is on paper line by line. That is why we write the inventory during packing in Riyadh and do not leave it until after the door is closed. Tunisians living abroad also have an online service for declaring personal belongings, and we point you to it if it applies to your shipment.
| Type of shipment | What it needs |
|---|---|
| Every shipment | A copy of the sender’s ID or residence permit, the consignee’s name as in the passport, the address and a Tunisian phone number |
| Furniture and personal belongings | A numbered packing list with a value for each line, and the owner’s passport |
| Belongings of someone returning for good | Proof of the period of residence in the Kingdom and the return date, and whatever documents customs asks for to grant the concessions |
| Commercial goods | Commercial invoice, packing list and certificate of origin, plus the Tunisian importer’s details |
| A car | As set out in the car documents table above |
| An air parcel | A clear description of the contents and their value, and an invoice for new items |
The belongings of someone returning for good do enjoy concessions, but these are limited by a value ceiling and by residence conditions that customs sets and amends. So we do not promise you an exemption before putting your list in front of the clearing agent. New appliances in their boxes are usually treated as merchandise even when they are part of a household. Templates are on the shipping documents page, and the procedure is explained on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Tunisia or needs a permit
Some items are banned in all international shipping, and some Tunisia restricts with a permit from the relevant authority. One offending item in a furniture container is enough to have the whole container held until the matter is decided, so show us anything you are unsure about before packing.
| Item | Status |
|---|---|
| Drugs, weapons, ammunition and explosives | Strictly prohibited |
| Flammable materials, gas cylinders and paints | Not loaded with furniture, nor by air |
| Tunisian currency and cash | Not shipped; the dinar does not circulate outside Tunisia |
| Medicines | In personal-use quantity, with a prescription |
| Drones and radio communication devices | Need prior authorisation in Tunisia |
| Food, plants and seeds | Subject to health and agricultural control |
| Counterfeit goods | Seized at customs |
| Gold, jewellery and valuable papers | Not shipped with belongings |
| Zamzam water | Not shipped; its export is not permitted apart from the traveller’s pack |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
Receiving the shipment in Tunisia: ports and cities

When the vessel berths, the clearing agent we work with takes over. He files the customs declaration, attends the inspection, and tells the consignee what duties are due, if any. After release the container leaves on a truck for the address, where the crew unloads the pieces, reassembles what was dismantled in Riyadh and clears away the packing materials. Anyone who prefers to collect from the port in person may do so, and the price is lower.
| City | Nearest arrival port | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Tunis, Ariana, Ben Arous and Manouba | Rades | The port is on the edge of the capital; delivery on the release day or the next |
| Bizerte | Rades | About 65 km north of the capital |
| Nabeul and Hammamet | Rades | About 65 km away on Cap Bon |
| Sousse, Monastir and Mahdia | Rades or Sousse | Sousse is about 140 km south of the capital |
| Kairouan | Rades or Sousse | About 160 km inland |
| Sfax | Rades or Sfax | The country’s second city, about 270 km to the south |
| Gabes, Medenine, Djerba and Tataouine | Rades or Sfax | A longer road leg to the south, counted in the price |
| Gafsa, Tozeur, Beja, Jendouba and El Kef | Rades | Delivery by truck once the date is arranged |
Rades is Tunisia’s leading container port. La Goulette, right beside it, takes ferries and vehicle carriers. Sfax, Sousse, Bizerte and Gabes are commercial ports serving their own regions, and we use them when a shipping line offers a sailing there. The complete service has its own door-to-door shipping page.
A service for individuals, companies and organisations
The lane is the same, but a family’s needs are not a company’s. An individual wants someone to take the packing and the paperwork off his hands; a company wants a fixed date, a tax invoice and sound export documents. We arrange the service on that basis:
| Customer | What they need | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Individuals and families | Moving a home, a car or cartons | Survey, packing, inventory and delivery at the address |
| Companies and factories | Repeat export shipments | Regular container bookings and preparation of export documents |
| Online shops | Parcels for customers in Tunisia | Air freight by the kilogram with a tracking number per parcel |
| Organisations and embassies | Belongings of staff whose postings have ended | A separate file for each employee, coordinated with the employer |
Is there land freight from Riyadh to Tunisia?
Many people ask about a truck because it is the familiar way to the Gulf and Jordan. Between the Kingdom and Tunisia, however, lie the Red Sea, Egypt and Libya, and the border posts on that road do not run regularly enough to build a delivery date on. So we do not rely on the road to Tunisia and do not offer it to customers. A large shipment goes by container, and a light or urgent one goes by air.
Air freight from Riyadh to Tunisia

The aircraft is for the shipment that cannot wait three weeks at sea: an attested certificate its owner needs before a deadline, a spare part, a trader’s samples, or a suitcase sent ahead of its owner. The shipment leaves the cargo village at King Khalid International Airport and reaches Tunis-Carthage Airport, usually through one transit stop, and is then cleared and delivered to the address within 3–7 days.
- What it suits: documents, parcels, samples, spare parts, electronics and clothing.
- How it is charged: on the greater of actual and volumetric weight, so a light, bulky parcel is charged by its dimensions.
- Prices: from SAR 22 per kilogram, a 50 kg parcel from SAR 1,105, and documents from SAR 83.
- Packing: a sturdy carton sized to the contents with no spare space, because every extra centimetre goes into the volumetric weight.
- Restricted by air: batteries, perfumes, liquids and aerosols, each with a requirement we tell you about before packing.
- Other airports: Sfax, Monastir and Djerba are served by road delivery from Carthage, or by a domestic flight when one is available.
Air costs several times what sea does, so it is no good for furniture or heavy goods. If your shipment is a mix, send the urgent part by air and the rest in the container. Details are on the air freight page.
Collection from Riyadh districts and nearby towns
We collect from homes, warehouses, shops, showrooms and offices in any district of Riyadh. The hours at which large trucks may enter the city’s districts are regulated by the traffic department, so we schedule loading within the permitted hours and send a smaller vehicle into narrow streets to shuttle to the truck.
| Area | Districts and sites | Note |
|---|---|---|
| North Riyadh | Al Yasmin, Al Narjis, Al Malqa, Hittin, Al Sahafa and Al Arid | Villas and residential compounds; loading at the front door |
| East Riyadh | Al Rawdah, Al Naseem, Qurtubah, Al Khaleej and Al Rimal | Also the car showrooms, where a car is collected by transporter |
| West Riyadh | Al Suwaidi, Dhahrat Laban, Namar, Tuwaiq and Al Uraija | Many flats; we need the lift dimensions in advance |
| Central and south Riyadh | Al Olaya, Al Malaz, Al Shifa, Al Aziziyah and Al Mansourah | Busy streets; loading in the quiet hours |
| Diriyah and the Diplomatic Quarter | Adjoining the city | An entry permit for the Diplomatic Quarter is arranged a day ahead |
| Al Kharj | About 80 km to the south | Collected before the main loading day |
| Al Majmaah and Qassim | About 185 km and 350 km to the north | By appointment, with the shipment consolidated at our warehouse |
If your shipment is ready before you travel, or your home in Tunisia is not ready yet, we hold it in the warehouse until the time comes. Details are on the storage page.

Tracking and insurance
After sailing we send you the container number and the bill of lading number. With them you can see on the shipping line’s website where the vessel is, when it enters the Suez Canal, and whether the container changes vessel on the way. We also notify you ourselves at four points: handover of the container at the Jeddah quay, departure of the vessel, its arrival in Tunisia, and release. An air parcel has a tracking number from the airline.
Insurance on this lane is easy to justify. The cargo passes through the hands of a truck, then a crane, then a ship, may be moved from one vessel to another, and then meets a crane and a truck again in Tunisia. Cover is charged as a small percentage of the value you declare and is written into a policy in your name. A claim needs the pre-loading photographs and the valued packing list, and we prepare both for you. Details are on the shipment tracking and cargo insurance pages.
Shipping from Tunisia to Riyadh
The lane runs both ways. For someone who has come to work in Riyadh and wants furniture or books from Tunisia, or a trader importing olive oil, dates or ceramics, our agent takes in the shipment there and it is loaded into a container from Rades to Jeddah Islamic Port. After clearance our truck carries it to the address in Riyadh. Used personal belongings need a packing list, commercial goods are subject to the Kingdom’s duties and tax, and foodstuffs to the requirements of the Food and Drug Authority.
Tips before shipping your belongings from Riyadh to Tunisia
- Start with the customs question, not the price question: do the final-return concessions apply to you? The answer changes what you ship.
- Write the packing list as you pack, and do not put it off.
- Make the consignee’s name match the Tunisian passport in Latin letters.
- Keep important papers and medicines in your travel bag, not in the container.
- Photograph the furniture and the car before handover, and keep the photographs until you take delivery.
- Send urgent items by air, and do not tie your daily needs to a sailing date.
- Keep an active Tunisian phone number with the clearing agent throughout the journey.
How do you choose a shipping company from Riyadh to Tunisia?
The difference between one company and another shows in its questions before its figures. One that asks about your return date and the arrival port knows the lane. One that gives you a number in a minute without knowing the volume of your shipment will revise it after loading.
| What to look at | What reassures you | What should worry you |
|---|---|---|
| Legal standing | A commercial registration and a known address | Only a mobile number and a social media account |
| How it prices | A survey, then an itemised price | A price over the phone before the volume is known |
| Knowledge of the lane | Explains how the container gets from Riyadh to the sea | Promises a truck overland to Tunisia in days |
| The Tunisian end | A clearing agent at Rades handling release and delivery | “We get it to the port and the rest is yours”, said only after the contract |
| Car conditions | Asks for the first-registration date before booking | “Any car gets in” |
| Documentation | A bill of lading in your name and photographs before the container is sealed | A handwritten receipt with no container number |
Common mistakes when shipping from Riyadh to Tunisia
- Buying the car before checking that its age falls within the limit on arrival, not on the purchase date.
- Counting the transit time from the sailing day and forgetting the days on the road from Riyadh to the port.
- Guessing the volume by eye and booking a container smaller than needed.
- Putting new appliances in their boxes among used furniture without declaring them.
- Shipping appliances that do not run on Tunisian electricity.
- Leaving the consignee’s papers until the vessel berths, so storage is charged on the container.
- Comparing a price that ends at the port of Rades with one that reaches the front door.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to Tunisia
How much does shipping from Riyadh to Tunisia cost?
The figure depends on what is in the shipment. The smallest thing we carry is a single carton in a groupage container, from SAR 140, followed by the cubic metre from SAR 415. A complete bedroom starts from SAR 2,575, a saloon car from SAR 5,335, and a 20ft container from SAR 4,600 as ocean freight out of Jeddah port. Send your list of items and the name of the Tunisian city to 0552803439 and we will work out the exact number.
How long does a shipment take from Riyadh to Tunisia?
A full container normally arrives within 20–35 days, counted from the loading day in Riyadh to the day it is handed over at the Tunisian address. Groupage stretches to 30–45 days because it waits for the container to fill. An air parcel arrives in 3–7 days, clearance included.
Riyadh is not on the coast, so where does my shipment sail from?
From Jeddah Islamic Port in most cases. The truck covers about 950 km from Riyadh to Jeddah, then the vessel heads north up the Red Sea to the Suez Canal and on into the Mediterranean. When a Dammam sailing suits the dates better, the container leaves Riyadh Dry Port by train for King Abdulaziz Port.
Is there land freight from Riyadh to Tunisia?
We do not rely on the road for this lane. The route crosses more than one country and its border posts do not run regularly enough to build a date on, so we never promise it to a customer. The two workable options are the sea container for large volumes and the aircraft for anything light or urgent.
Which Tunisian port does the container reach?
Rades, next to the capital, is Tunisia’s first stop for containers, and most of our shipments arrive there. Where the consignee is in the south or on the Sahel coast we look at Sfax or Sousse, depending on what the shipping lines offer at booking time. Cars on RoRo vessels are mostly discharged at La Goulette.
Do you ship a car from Riyadh to Tunisia?
Yes. We collect it on a transporter from your home, the showroom or the auction yard, complete the export certificate, and then it goes in a private or shared container or on a RoRo vessel. The price starts from SAR 5,335 for a saloon and from SAR 5,980 for a 4×4.
What is the car age condition under the FCR scheme?
The rule in force is that the car must be no more than five years old when it is imported, and the age runs from the date of first registration, not from the model year. The conditions shift with the Tunisian finance laws, which is why we go through the current ones with you before you pay for the car.
Who benefits from the FCR scheme?
A Tunisian returning for good after living abroad. The conditions usually quoted are at least two years outside Tunisia, no more than 183 days inside it in any one year, and no previous use of the privilege. We confirm the details in force with Tunisian customs before shipping.
Is a returning Tunisian’s furniture exempt from duties?
Someone returning for good has concessions on used belongings and furniture, but they are tied to proof of the period lived abroad and to a value ceiling that customs sets and changes. We prepare the valued packing list with you and ask the clearing agent at Rades about the ceiling in force before the container is closed.
Do you come and survey the home before setting the price?
Yes. The surveyor visits you at home in Riyadh, or you send us video clips of the rooms. The survey produces the volume of the shipment in cubic metres, and on that we suggest a 20ft container, a 40ft container or groupage, and the price is written on that basis.
Do you accept a single carton or a suitcase?
Yes. A carton travels by sea in a groupage container from SAR 140, and if it is urgent it flies from SAR 22 per kilogram. Documents go by express from SAR 83.
Can I put belongings inside the car being shipped?
In a private container you can, provided the items are written on the packing list and declared to customs. RoRo vessels, on the other hand, only accept a car that is completely empty.
Who pays the customs duties in Tunisia?
The consignee in Tunisia pays them, unless an exemption or a privilege applies. The clearing agent we work with files the declaration and tells the consignee the expected amount before payment, so there is no surprise figure at the counter.
Do you insure the shipment?
Insurance is optional and is charged as a percentage of the value you declare. We recommend it for every furniture container and every car on this lane, because the cargo moves between a truck, two quays and a ship before it arrives.
Do you ship from Tunisia to Riyadh?
Yes. Our agent takes in the shipment in Tunisia and it is loaded into a container for Jeddah port; once it has cleared, our truck carries it to your address in Riyadh.
