Who ships from Riyadh to the Netherlands, and what do they ship?

The capital’s shipments to the Netherlands look like the capital itself: employees, experts, students and companies. Riyadh has Dutch nationals working in energy, water, agriculture and engineering firms, and when their contracts end they go home with a whole household. It has Saudis joining the universities of Delft, Groningen and Eindhoven, and families moving with a breadwinner transferred to his company’s branch in Amsterdam. And it has factories and traders sending their goods to Europe’s largest sea gateway. Each of them has a method and a customs position:

Who ships What they ship Usual method Position at Dutch customs
A Dutch national returning from work in Riyadh Household furniture, appliances and a car 20ft or 40ft container Transfer-of-residence relief under a prior permit
A transferred Saudi employee Family belongings and flat furniture Sea part load with air bags The same relief after registering the address
A student or scholarship holder Books, clothes and room items Cartons by air or in a shared container Study belongings with proof of admission
A car owner A running or classic car Closed container or RoRo Duty and two taxes, or within the relief
A factory or trader Goods to the Netherlands or through it Containers, and samples by air Clearance in Rotterdam or transit
An embassy or government body Staff belongings, documents and exhibits Air for documents and sea for belongings According to the consignee’s status

From Riyadh to the port, then Rotterdam

From Riyadh to the port, then Rotterdam

The first question a Riyadh resident asks: my city is in the middle of the desert, so how does my container sail? The answer is that the journey starts overland. The container is loaded at your house or in our warehouse and then takes one of two routes to the sea. The first is a truck on the motorway west to Jeddah Islamic Port, a run of close to 950 km. The second is a container train that sets off from the dry port in the south of Riyadh for the quays of King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam on the Arabian Gulf.

Rotterdam lies in north-west Europe, so a vessel bound for it has to pass through the Suez Canal. Jeddah is on the Red Sea, that is, directly on the canal route. A Dammam vessel, by contrast, leaves through the Strait of Hormuz and goes round the south of the Arabian Peninsula before it reaches the Red Sea, which adds sailing days. That is why we send most Netherlands containers to Jeddah and keep the train option for specific cases:

Point of comparison Truck to Jeddah port Train from the dry port to Dammam
Route inside the Kingdom Close to 950 km on tarmac A freight line about 550 km long
Export clearance At the gate of Jeddah port In Riyadh, and the container leaves sealed
The vessel’s course to Rotterdam From the Red Sea straight to Suez Hormuz, then the Arabian Sea, then the Red Sea
Suits Household furniture, belongings and cars Factory goods in recurring containers
When we choose it For most private shipments When the Dammam sailing is sooner or cheaper

After Suez the vessel crosses the Mediterranean and Gibraltar, then heads north to the English Channel and the mouth of the River Maas, where the Rotterdam quays are. Some sailings are direct and some change vessel at an intermediate port, and we tell you which on the booking day. The service is explained on the sea freight page, and the Kingdom’s gateways on the ports and gateways page.

Shipping time from Riyadh to the Netherlands

An honest transit time is counted from the day the furniture leaves your house to the day it enters the Dutch home, not from the day the vessel sails. Between the two days there are six stops, some in our hands and some in the hands of the port and customs. This is how they break down for a full container leaving Riyadh via Jeddah:

Stop What happens Usual time
Your house in Riyadh Dismantling, packing, inventory and loading 1–2 days
The road to the port Truck to Jeddah and entry to the container yard 1–2 days
Jeddah port Export declaration and waiting for the vessel’s date 4–6 days
The sea Suez, then the Mediterranean, the Atlantic and the North Sea 15–21 days
Rotterdam port Discharging the container and clearance with the relief permit or by paying the tax 2–3 working days
The road to the address A Dutch truck and unloading inside the house 1–2 days

These stops usually add up to between 26 and 35 days, because they do not all hit their maximum on one journey. The time changes with the shipping method:

Method Routing From Riyadh to the door For
Full container Riyadh → Jeddah → Rotterdam 26–35 days A whole house or wholesale goods
Sea part load A shared container sorted in a Rotterdam warehouse 31–40 days Cartons and one or two rooms
Car Carrier to Jeddah, then container or RoRo 27–36 days Cars of all kinds
Air King Khalid Airport → Schiphol 3–6 days Parcels, bags, documents and samples

What lengthens the time?

  • Vessel rerouting: some lines may take the Cape of Good Hope route instead of Suez, which lengthens the sailing by a week or two. We tell you your sailing’s route before you pay.
  • A late relief permit: a container that arrives ahead of its permit stands in Rotterdam and is charged storage.
  • Part load: it waits for the container to fill in the Kingdom, then for its turn in sorting after arrival.
  • The autumn season: the port gets busy before the European holiday season, and part loads fill up with students’ belongings.

Times for the other destinations are on the transit times page.

Shipping prices from Riyadh to the Netherlands

Every shipment is priced by its own unit. What flies is charged by the kilogram, what sails in a shared container by the cubic metre, a whole house by the container, and a car by its size. A Riyadh invoice has an item that does not appear on a coastal city’s invoice, the road transport to the port, and we write it separately so you can see what you pay for each stage. These are the figures our services to the Netherlands start from:

Shipment How it ships Price starts from
Parcels, bags and samples By air from King Khalid Airport to Schiphol SAR 23 per kilogram
Documents up to one kilogram Express SAR 83
Furniture and belongings Sea part load to Rotterdam SAR 5,500
Furniture of a whole house Full container SAR 11,000
Saloon car RoRo from Jeddah port to Rotterdam SAR 2,800
Car inside a closed container 20ft container, or with furniture in a 40ft Set by the car’s size
A student’s cartons In a shared container Set by the number of cartons
Transport from Riyadh to the port Truck or train according to the shipment Set on request

Market prices in circulation for this route span a wide range. An air kilogram to the Netherlands is published at between 2.5 and 8 dollars, sea freight for a container at between 1,500 and 8,000 dollars, and clearance fees at between 150 and 500 dollars. Express platforms offer a small parcel or a document envelope at between SAR 107 and 130. On the same route in the opposite direction a 20ft container is quoted at between 1,200 and 3,000 euros, a 40ft at between 2,000 and 5,000 euros, and a part-load cubic metre at between 150 and 300 euros. Overall figures also circulate: SAR 1,500 to 6,000 for furniture by sea, SAR 2,000 to 7,000 for commercial goods, SAR 8,000 to 20,000 for full containers, and about SAR 150 for a one-kilogram parcel. These figures do not match because each one stops at a different point: some at the port and some at the door.

Factor How it changes the price of a Riyadh shipment
Volume and weight The cubic metre at sea and the chargeable weight in the air. Work out your volume with the CBM calculator
The road to the port An item specific to inland cities, lower when your shipment joins a scheduled run
Scope of service To the Rotterdam quay, or right into the house with clearance
The Dutch house An outside hoist for upper floors, and a parking permit in city centres
The final country Transit from Rotterdam to a neighbouring country adds road transport

How do you reduce the cost?

  • Book early so your shipment catches our scheduled run from Riyadh to Jeddah, and you pay your share of the truck rather than all of it.
  • Finish the relief permit before sailing; 21% tax on the value of your furniture weighs more than any difference in the freight.
  • Do not ship what will not go up the stairs of the Dutch house. Selling it in Riyadh is cheaper than paying its freight and then its hoist.
  • Split your shipment: what you need in your first week by air, and the rest by sea.

All the factors are explained on the pricing factors page.

Sea freight from Riyadh to the Netherlands: full container or part load?

The sea is the route for everything large or heavy on this lane, and it comes in two forms. With a full container, a container is booked for you that nobody shares; it is loaded in Riyadh, sealed and not opened until it arrives. With a part load you hand over your goods packed, they are placed with other shippers’ goods in one container bound for Rotterdam, and you pay for the space you took up. What decides between them is the volume you have:

Point of comparison Full container Part load
Basis of the charge The whole container, however much of it you fill The cubic metres you occupy
From Riyadh to the door 26–35 days 31–40 days
Number of handlings One loading and one unloading Consolidation in the Kingdom and sorting in Rotterdam
Suits A flat of three rooms or more, or furniture with a car Anything under 15 cubic metres
Price starts from SAR 11,000 SAR 5,500

To compare in numbers: a 20ft container carries about 28 cubic metres, which is the furniture of a two- to three-room flat once dismantled. A 40ft container carries close to double that, enough for a small villa or a house with a car. Internal dimensions are on the container sizes page.

Shipping furniture and household goods from Riyadh to the Netherlands

The difference between a house in Riyadh and a house in the Netherlands is the root of every problem in shipping furniture. The capital’s villas have long majlis rooms, wide bedrooms and wardrobes that reach the ceiling. A Dutch house is narrow and tall, its stairs are very steep, and many buildings in the old towns bring furniture in through the window with a hoist rather than through the door. So we start the survey with a question about your Dutch address: which floor, how wide the staircase is, and whether the building has a lift.

  • Sorting first: we put the pieces into three groups: ship, ship dismantled, and not worth shipping.
  • Dismantling: bedroom sets, wardrobes and dining tables are taken down to panels, and each piece’s screws go in a bag taped to it.
  • What is not needed there: split air conditioners and large water heaters, since most Dutch homes have central heating and need no cooling.
  • Loading: a container at the villa door if the street is wide enough, or a closed truck to our warehouse and then the container.
  • In the Netherlands: unloading into the rooms, reassembling what was dismantled, and an outside hoist where needed, requested at booking and not on the delivery day.

In the compounds and towers of north Riyadh we arrange the truck’s entry permit and the service-lift slot with the management before the loading day. Service details are on the furniture shipping page.

Packing that withstands the desert road and the North Sea

Your furniture covers roughly a thousand kilometres on a hot, dry road, then spends three weeks in a metal container, and is then opened in damp, cold Dutch air. The temperature gap between the start and the end of the journey gathers water droplets on the inside walls of the container, which people in the trade call “container rain”. Good packing is built on that fact, not only on preventing scratches.

  • Wood: cotton blankets, then corrugated cardboard. We do not wrap lacquered wood directly in plastic film, because it traps moisture and leaves marks on the finish.
  • Moisture absorbers: bags hung inside the container and placed in the cartons of clothes and books, and carpets are rolled, not folded.
  • Glass, marble and paintings: crates of heat-treated wood bearing the ISPM 15 stamp, as untreated wood is refused at European ports.
  • Fridge and washing machine: emptied and dried a day before loading, with the washing machine drum fixed by its transit bolts.
  • Numbers: every carton carries a number, and every number has a line in the contents list in English.

The contents list is attached to the relief permit application as it stands: a line such as “Carton 9: used kitchen utensils” passes, while a line such as “miscellaneous” invites opening. Packing methods are in the packing guide, and securing the load inside the container on the packing and lashing page.

Transfer-of-residence relief in the Netherlands

Anyone moving their normal home from the Kingdom to the Netherlands brings in used furniture and belongings without customs duty or value added tax. The rule is European, but the Netherlands applies it through a permit issued by its customs, requested before the container berths and not after it arrives. These are its conditions in current practice, and we review the ones in force with you before loading:

Condition What it means for you
Previous residence At least twelve consecutive months outside the European Union
Ownership and use Goods you have owned and used for six months before your move
Deadline for bringing them in Within twelve months of taking up residence in the Netherlands
After entry Not sold, let, lent or pledged for twelve months
Proof of settling Your municipal registration certificate, or proof of departure with an employment or tenancy contract
What it does not cover Alcohol, tobacco, commercial vehicles and non-portable equipment of a trade

The practical order is three steps: you register your address with the municipality of your Dutch city, then the permit application goes to customs with the contents list, then the container is cleared under the permit. A resident leaving Riyadh proves the year outside the Union with the residence permit, the registered tenancy contract and the final exit visa. We open this file with you on the survey day; the container sails for three weeks, which is long enough for the permit to be issued if we start early.

Shipping students’ belongings and small parcels

Riyadh’s students in the Netherlands are spread over small university towns: Delft for engineering, Groningen in the north, Eindhoven for technology, and Leiden, Utrecht and Amsterdam. Rooms in student accommodation there are mostly furnished, so a student needs no furniture. He needs proper winter clothes, his books, simple kitchen items and what he is used to from home. The same goes for someone sending a parcel to a relative: a gift, papers, or things the traveller forgot.

  • By air: two or three cartons arrive within days, and the price starts from SAR 23 per kilogram on the chargeable weight.
  • By sea: for anyone with more than ten cartons, handed to us about six weeks before travelling.
  • Gifts: a gift parcel sent from one person to another has a small exemption limit, 45 euros in current practice, and whatever exceeds it pays value added tax. We check the limit in force on the sending day.
  • The declaration: the name, quantity and value of each item in English, with the Dutch consignee’s mobile number and email.
  • What stays with the traveller: original certificates, the admission letter, medicines and the laptop.

How to prepare a parcel is on the parcel shipping page.

Shipping electronic devices to the Netherlands

Computers, screens, measuring instruments and medical equipment leave Riyadh for the Netherlands for many reasons: an employee moving his home office, a company sending a device to its manufacturer for servicing, a laboratory returning hired equipment. These shipments are light in weight and high in value, so they mostly belong on an aircraft. Two things threaten them: vibration, and lithium batteries, which have flight rules of their own.

Device How it is prepared Note
Laptop, phone and tablet In its box or between protective foam inside a double-wall carton The battery stays inside the device; loose ones are restricted
Screen and television Foam corners and a board protecting the face, with a wooden crate for large sizes Shipped upright, not lying flat
Laboratory and measuring devices Moving parts secured and a shock indicator on the case Anything going for repair is declared as a temporary return
Household appliances with motors By sea with the furniture The 50/60 hertz frequency label is checked

Devices shipped for sale in the Netherlands are not the same as personal devices: they need the European conformity mark and a registered importer who takes responsibility for them. Your used device enters with the rest of your belongings, and we advise insuring it at its value and backing up its data before handover.

Shipping commercial goods from Riyadh to the Netherlands

For a trader the Netherlands is not one country but a distribution warehouse for a continent. Goods that enter Rotterdam reach Germany, Belgium and France within a day by truck or river barge. That is why factories in the industrial cities of Riyadh, Al-Kharj and Sudair choose Rotterdam as the entry point for their plastics, packaging materials, dates and foodstuffs. The goods enter in the name of an importer with a European customs identification number, not in the sender’s name.

Item What is required
The importer A company holding a European economic operator number
Duty and tax Duty according to the product’s heading in the European tariff, then 21% value added tax, and 9% for foodstuffs
Deferring the tax An importer registered in the Netherlands with a deferment licence enters it in the tax return instead of paying it at the port
Conformity The European conformity mark for appliances, toys and protective equipment
Dates and foodstuffs A label in the market’s language and European food rules, and we confirm the certificates needed for each shipment
Wooden pallets and crates Treated wood with the ISPM 15 stamp

We collect from the factory gate and issue the export declaration, and samples and exhibition items fly from King Khalid Airport to Schiphol. Details are on the commercial shipping page.

Car shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands

Car shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands

The car is not driven from Riyadh to the port. A car carrier picks it up from your house or the showroom and reaches Jeddah with it in a day or two. There are two methods there: a closed container, or a RoRo vessel. In a container the car goes in up a ramp, its four wheels are tied with tensioned straps to the floor rings, wooden chocks are set in front of and behind it, and then the doors are closed and sealed. Nobody touches it until it is opened in Rotterdam.

Method How the car travels Best for Price starts from
Closed 20ft container Strapped by its four wheels inside a sealed container Luxury, classic and high-value cars Set by the car’s size
40ft container The car at the front and the furniture behind a wooden bulkhead A family moving with its house and car Set on request
RoRo Driven into the vessel’s hold and shipped empty of belongings A running saloon, and the cheapest option SAR 2,800

Shipping is the easy part. What follows is the hard part, which is why we review the Dutch import conditions with you before the car moves from Riyadh. In current practice the car pays 10% customs duty and then 21% value added tax, undergoes an individual inspection at the vehicle authority because its specification is Gulf rather than European, and is charged a registration tax based on engine emissions, which rises sharply with the large engines common in the Kingdom. The car of someone transferring residence falls within the relief if they have owned and used it for six months. A classic over thirty years old that has stayed in its original condition gets reduced treatment.

  • Before loading: a quarter tank of fuel, the battery terminal disconnected, and photographs of the car from all four sides and of the odometer.
  • The Saudi papers: the registration, the export certificate and export plates from the traffic department, with the car free of liens and fines.

For how each method works, see container car shipping and RoRo car shipping; export rules on the Saudi side are covered in car shipping from Saudi Arabia.

Dutch customs and the documents required

The Netherlands is a member of the European Union, so a shipment cleared in Rotterdam then moves between Union countries with no further customs. The rule for anything without relief: a duty according to the type of goods, then 21% value added tax charged on the value plus freight and insurance. Clearance there is electronic and quick if the file arrives complete ahead of the vessel. This is what is required for each type:

Shipment Documents Watch out for
Furniture and belongings of someone transferring residence Passport, relief permit, municipal registration certificate, contents list and bill of lading The name on the bill of lading matches the passport letter for letter
A student’s belongings Passport and study residence permit, admission letter and contents list The accommodation address and postcode in full
Car The Saudi registration card with the export certificate, the invoice of purchase, plus evidence that a relief applicant has held the car for six months The chassis number on every paper
Commercial goods Commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and the importer’s customs number The correct tariff heading for each item
Parcel or gift The sender’s ID and a declaration of the items and their value The consignee’s mobile number and email

On the Kingdom’s side we prepare the export declaration and ask a departing resident for a copy of the residence permit and the final exit visa where needed. Each paper is explained on the shipping documents page, and the release stages on the customs clearance page.

What cannot be shipped to the Netherlands or needs a permit

The entry rules here are those of the whole European Union, and they are strictest on food and plants. The problem does not come from a smuggler but from an ordinary kitchen carton holding a tin of ghee or a bag of powdered milk that the lady of the house packed without knowing. We go through this list with you at the survey:

Item Ruling
Meat, dairy, ghee and cheese Not admitted from outside the European Union in private belongings and parcels
Plants, seedlings, seeds and soil With a phytosanitary certificate
Medicines A personal-use quantity with the doctor’s prescription
Counterfeit goods Confiscated and destroyed
Ivory, and skins and furs of protected animals Prohibited without the international convention certificate
Weapons, combat knives and daggers Prohibited or licensed, and never placed among the furniture
Tobacco and alcohol Outside the relief and subject to special duties
Cash, gold and original documents Carried by hand, and cash is declared once it reaches ten thousand euros

The general list is on the prohibited items page. Anything you are unsure of, send us a photograph of it before the carton is closed on it.

Delivery in Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht and the other cities

Delivery in Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht

In Rotterdam our agent takes over the file before the vessel berths. He lodges the customs declaration with the relief permit or pays the tax, then leaves with the container after release and agrees the delivery day and hour with the consignee. The country’s small size works in your favour: the farthest large city from the port is reached in three hours. So it is clearance, then delivery, usually with one day between them.

City Distance from Rotterdam Delivery note
Rotterdam The port city Sometimes delivered on the very day of release
The Hague and Delft About 25 km The city of embassies and international organisations, and Delft University of Technology
Utrecht About 60 km The centre of the country, where roads branch out in every direction
Amsterdam About 80 km Narrow canal houses, and a small vehicle instead of the container truck
Eindhoven About 110 km Technology firms and its university, and modern housing that is easier to unload at
Groningen About 250 km The far north, and a student city

Heavy trucks enter Amsterdam’s old centre only with a permit, so the belongings are moved from the container to a smaller vehicle at the edge of the city, and the parking space is booked with the municipality days ahead. Canal houses have a beam at the top of the façade from which the hoisting rope hangs, so the sofa goes up through the window. Write the address for us in its Dutch form: street and house number, then the postcode, then the city. Destination details are on the shipping to the Netherlands page.

Our services for individuals, companies, government bodies and embassies

One service does not fit every customer in a city like Riyadh. A family that is moving wants to hand over the keys of its house and travel with peace of mind. A company asks about a fixed date and a tax invoice. A ministry or authority sends a delegation and exhibits to a fair in Amsterdam and wants them back. An embassy moves a staff member whose posting has ended. So we divide the work like this:

Customer Their need What we provide
Individuals and families Moving a house or belongings without exhausting follow-up A survey, an itemised price and one coordinator from loading to delivery
Students A few cartons at the lowest cost Shared containers on dates ahead of the start of term
Companies and factories Recurring containers and accurate paperwork A shipping schedule, an account manager and a report for each container
Government bodies Exhibits, publications and delegations Temporary admission for what will return, and commitment to the opening date
Embassies and consulates Diplomats’ belongings and correspondence Coordination with the administration, and loading from the Diplomatic Quarter under a permit

The Diplomatic Quarter in west Riyadh admits vehicles on details registered in advance, so we send the truck’s number and the crew’s names before the appointment. The belongings of a diplomat bound for The Hague are cleared according to his status and his organisation’s letter, so we ask for the letter from the start.

Air freight from Riyadh to the Netherlands

Air freight from Riyadh to the Netherlands

In air freight Riyadh is ahead of cities without an international airport: the shipment is handed over at the cargo village of King Khalid Airport inside the city and needs no long road leg. From the airport there are direct flights to Amsterdam several times a week taking about seven hours, and daily flights with one stop. Schiphol is one of Europe’s largest cargo airports, so clearance there is regular, and the shipment reaches the address within 3 to 6 days of collection.

  • For whom: parcels and urgent shipments, students’ bags, documents, samples, spare parts and electronics.
  • Price: starts from SAR 23 per kilogram and falls as the weight rises, and from SAR 83 for a document envelope.
  • Chargeable weight: the greater of actual and volumetric weight. Try your parcel’s dimensions in the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Security screening: every shipment goes through X-ray, so do not include loose batteries, pressurised containers or perfume in quantity.
  • Delivery: to the address in any Dutch city, against the consignee’s signature.
  • With the relief: what you send by air from your belongings falls under the same relief permit if it is named in the list.

The service is explained on the air freight page.

Air or sea? And is there land freight to the Netherlands?

The decision follows two questions: how much your shipment weighs or how much room it takes, and when you need it. What is counted in kilograms and has a deadline flies. What is counted in cubic metres sails. Most families who move combine the two routes: the first week’s bags by air, and the house in the container.

As for land freight, it is mentioned in some advertisements, and we do not rely on it. The road from the Kingdom to the Netherlands passes through Jordan, Syria and Turkey and then several European countries, with a document and a wait at every border. The detailed comparison is on the shipping methods comparison page.

Collection from Riyadh’s districts and nearby towns

We collect from the house, office or factory in any part of the capital. In the north, Al-Malqa, Hittin, Al-Yasmin and Al-Narjis; in the centre, Olaya, Sulaimaniyah and Al-Malaz; in the east, Al-Rawdah and Al-Naseem; and in the south and west, Al-Shifa, Al-Aziziyah, Tuwaiq and Irqah. The crew arrives with the packing materials, so you prepare nothing but the sorting. Shipments from the surrounding governorates are brought to the Riyadh warehouse and leave with its run:

Collection point Location How we collect
Riyadh’s districts Within the urban area A crew and a closed truck to your door, with packing on site
Diriyah On the western edge of the capital Within the Riyadh round on the same day
Al-Muzahimiyah About 60 km west On the Jeddah road, so it is loaded as the truck passes
Al-Kharj About 80 km south Moved to the Riyadh warehouse a day before loading
Al-Majmaah and Sudair About 180 km north Factory containers from the industrial city by appointment
Qassim About 350 km Added to the Riyadh run, mostly dates in their season

What else we do out of the capital is set out in international shipping company in Riyadh; for other Saudi cities, open the service cities page.

Steps for shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands

  1. You send the details: what you are shipping, with photographs, your district in Riyadh, the Dutch city, and whether it is your final destination.
  2. We establish your customs position: transferring residence, student, trader or parcel sender. The paperwork is built on it.
  3. Survey and price: we estimate the volume and suggest the method, and you receive the price itemised from house to house.
  4. The relief permit: we prepare the contents list and the application attachments, and it is submitted to Dutch customs.
  5. Loading day: dismantling, packing and numbering, then your signature on the inventory record.
  6. Leaving Riyadh: a truck to Jeddah port, a train from the dry port, or the cargo village at the airport.
  7. Sailing: the container and bill of lading numbers reach you with the expected arrival date in Rotterdam.
  8. Clearance and delivery: release at the port, then delivery, unloading and reassembly, and a signature for receipt.

Tracking the shipment and insuring it

Your shipment changes hands many times between Riyadh and the Netherlands: the truck driver, the workers of two ports, the vessel’s crew and the Dutch haulier. Throughout that time you want to know two things: where it is now, and who compensates you if it is damaged. The answer to the first is tracking and to the second insurance, and neither replaces the other.

  • Tracking: type the container number, or the air waybill number, into the carrier’s site to see the latest port or airport recorded. Our track your shipment page walks you through it.
  • The coordinator’s messages: when the truck leaves Riyadh, enters the port, when the vessel sails, berths in Rotterdam and the release is issued.
  • Insurance: an optional item at a percentage of the declared value, covering the road leg, the sea and transport inside the Netherlands. The terms are on the cargo insurance page.

Shipping from the Netherlands to Riyadh

The lane works in both directions, and the reverse direction has its customers in the capital: a company importing agricultural equipment, greenhouses or spare parts, a graduate returning with the belongings of his years, and a shopper who bought furniture, bicycles or a classic car in the Netherlands. Our agent collects from the Dutch address and combines scattered purchases into one shipment.

  • By air: from Schiphol to King Khalid Airport, cleared there and delivered in your district.
  • By sea: from Rotterdam to Jeddah or Dammam, then by truck or train to Riyadh.
  • Saudi customs: a returnee’s used belongings enter as personal effects with a contents list, and new goods carry a duty by item and 15% value added tax.

Tips before shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands

  • Choose the method by the shipment and not by price alone: urgent and light by air, large and heavy by sea.
  • Ask the landlord of your Dutch house for the stair width and ceiling height before you decide to ship the bedroom set.
  • Write the sender’s and consignee’s details in full: the name as in the passport, a Dutch mobile number, an email and a postcode.
  • Have invoices or proof of value ready for valuable pieces, as customs and the insurer both ask about them.
  • Book weeks ahead of summer, when employees move, students travel and containers fill up.
  • Do not put off municipal registration after you arrive, because the relief permit depends on it.
  • Follow the shipment by its number, and carry a copy of the list and the permit with you.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands

How much does shipping from Riyadh to the Netherlands cost?

The lowest starting points for our services on this route: SAR 23 for an air-freight kilogram, SAR 83 for a document envelope, SAR 5,500 for furniture travelling as a part load, SAR 11,000 for a full-house container, and SAR 2,800 for a saloon car by RoRo out of Jeddah port. The road leg from Riyadh to the port is set on request according to the volume and the location of the house.

When will my shipment reach the Netherlands if it leaves from Riyadh?

Whatever flies out of King Khalid Airport is delivered in the Netherlands within 3 to 6 days. A full-house container needs 26 to 35 days from the day it is loaded in Riyadh, of which 15 to 21 days are spent at sea between Jeddah and Rotterdam. A part load takes about five days longer because of consolidation and then sorting.

Riyadh has no sea, so where does my container sail from to Rotterdam?

From Jeddah Islamic Port in most cases, which the container reaches on a truck covering close to 950 km. The alternative is the container train from the dry port south of the capital to King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam. We compare the vessel schedules of both ports on the day you book and choose whichever reaches the North Sea sooner.

Do I pay Dutch tax on my used household furniture?

No, if you are moving your residence to the Netherlands and obtained the relief permit from Dutch customs before the container arrives. Its conditions in current practice: at least one continuous year outside the European Union, goods you have owned and used for six months, and registration of your address with the municipality. Anyone who does not meet them is charged 21% value added tax and a duty according to the item.

What is required of a Saudi car before it can run on a Dutch plate?

Three things after it leaves Rotterdam port: customs clearance with 10% duty and 21% tax unless it falls under the transfer-of-residence relief, an individual inspection at the Dutch vehicle authority that checks the lights, emissions and specification, and then a registration tax based on the engine’s emissions. We work these items out with you before you pay the freight.

RoRo or a closed container for my car?

RoRo is cheaper and starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon; the car enters the vessel on its own wheels and empty. A closed container suits a luxury or classic car, and a car travelling with its owner’s furniture; in it the four wheels are strapped to the container floor and the doors are sealed in the Kingdom and opened only in the Netherlands.

Will my household electrical appliances work in the Netherlands?

The voltage is the same in both countries, 230 volts. Two things differ: the Dutch socket takes two round pins, so you need an adaptor or a new plug, and the frequency there is 50 hertz against 60 in the Kingdom. Chargers, computers and televisions usually accept both frequencies, but for a washing machine, an air conditioner or anything with a motor, read its label before you ship it.

Can dates, coffee and spices enter the Netherlands in a personal parcel?

Yes, in personal quantities and in sealed packs labelled with their contents. What is banned is anything of animal origin: ghee, cheese, powdered milk and meat, even tinned, because the European Union does not accept them from outside in private parcels. We go through the parcel contents with you before it is closed, so the whole of it is not held over a single tin.

Which Dutch cities do you deliver to?

To Amsterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, Rotterdam, Eindhoven and Groningen, and to Delft, Leiden, Maastricht and others. The Netherlands is a small country, so its farthest city is about 250 km from Rotterdam port, and the truck usually reaches any address in it on the day after customs release.

Do you ship students’ belongings from Riyadh to Dutch universities?

Yes. Someone with two or three cartons sends them by air so they arrive at the accommodation before he does, and someone with more adds them to a shared container about six weeks before travelling. In the address we write the name of the accommodation building, the room number and the Dutch postcode made up of four digits and two letters.

My destination is Germany or Belgium; can I ship through Rotterdam?

You can, and many do because Rotterdam services are more regular. The shipment leaves the port under a transit document and is cleared in its final country, with that country’s tax and relief. What matters is that you name the final country in the first call, because the documents are written for it and are not easily amended after sailing.

Is there land freight from Riyadh to the Netherlands?

We do not rely on it for private belongings and furniture. The truck crosses Jordan, Syria and Turkey and then several European countries, and every border has its own papers and waiting, so neither a date nor a price holds. A sealed sea container is cheaper and more predictable, and the aircraft is for anyone in a hurry.

How is a parcel’s weight calculated in air freight?

The weight on the scale is compared with the volumetric weight, and the parcel is charged on the greater of the two. Volumetric weight is the length times the width times the height in centimetres, divided by 6000. So a light, bulky carton of cushions may be charged at twice its actual weight, while a small carton of books is charged at its weight as it stands.

Is insurance on the shipment compulsory?

It is not compulsory, but it is the item we recommend for a household container, a car and appliances. Its premium is a percentage of the value you write against each piece in the contents list, and it covers the road from Riyadh to the port, the sailing and the transport inside the Netherlands. Without it, the sea carrier’s compensation stays limited and nowhere near the value of the furniture.

Do you collect shipments from the Netherlands to Riyadh?

Yes. Our agent collects from the home, shop or factory in the Netherlands, and the shipment flies to King Khalid Airport or sails from Rotterdam to Jeddah or Dammam and is then moved to Riyadh. Purchases from Dutch shops made from more than one seller are combined into one shipment under one declaration.
