Who ships from Saudi Arabia to Libya, and what do they ship?
Shipping between the two countries rests on six groups, and each has a method that suits it. The Kingdom has a Libyan community that works and studies, Umrah and Hajj pilgrims who go home with excess luggage, and Libyan traders who buy cars, dates and goods from its markets. These are the groups:
| Shipper | What they ship | Most suitable method |
|---|---|---|
| The returning Libyan family | A whole home’s furniture and appliances | A 20ft or 40ft container |
| The car buyer | A car from a showroom, auction or owner | RoRo, or a dedicated or shared container |
| The showroom trader | Several cars per shipment | Shared containers on a regular schedule |
| The expatriate and the pilgrim | Cartons, gifts and excess bags | Consolidated freight, or air for urgent items |
| The trader and importer | Dates, foodstuffs, building materials and appliances | A full container or a part load by the cubic metre |
| The contractor and the company | Trucks, excavators and project equipment | RoRo or a flat-rack container |
Why do you need a company that specialises in the Saudi Arabia–Libya route?
Because Libya is not served by one port or one procedure. The Libyan coast runs for about 1,800 km, and Tripoli and Benghazi are more than 1,000 km apart by road, and each port has its own sailing schedule, congestion and way of working at customs. A company that works this route every day knows which port suits the consignee’s city, which shipping line has the nearest date, and how the file is written so that it passes Libyan customs without a stop.
The difference shows in the details. Some items need a prior import permit in Libya. A shipment that arrives with no agent to receive it stays in the port yard and accumulates storage charges. A small shipment can be added to a shared container so that its cost falls. This is what a specialised company provides:
- Agents in Libya: brokers at the main ports who receive the shipment as soon as it arrives.
- Knowledge of the restrictions: what enters Libya, what is banned and what needs a permit, as applied at the time of shipping.
- Bookings on regular lines: from Jeddah and Dammam ports to Misrata, Benghazi, Tripoli and Khoms.
- A correct file first time: an invoice, certificate of origin and bill of lading in the form Libyan customs accepts.
- One point of follow-up: a single party to ask from collection to delivery.
Shipping methods from Saudi Arabia to Libya and how long each takes
There are three methods: sea, land and air. Sea is the mainstay on this route, and the cheapest per cubic metre. Land passes through Egypt, and the shipment stays in its truck. Air is the fastest and the most expensive, and suits only light items. The choice follows what you ship, the consignee’s city and your date. These times are door to door, not the sailing time alone:
| Method | Route | Approximate time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sea, full container | Jeddah port → Suez → Libyan port | 14–30 days | Cars, whole-home furniture and bulk goods |
| Sea, consolidated part load | The same route in a shared container | 20–40 days | Cartons and small shipments that are not urgent |
| RoRo for vehicles | A car carrier from Jeddah or Dammam | 15–30 days | Running cars, trucks and equipment |
| Land across Egypt | Duba → ferry → Egypt → Salloum → Musaid | 10–20 days | Medium furniture loads, refrigerated goods and eastern Libya |
| Air | Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam airport → transit → Libyan airport | 2–7 days | Documents, spare parts and medicines |
The sea journey is not sailing alone. There are days before the ship and days after it, and this is how they are spread for a full container leaving Jeddah:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Collection and packing | Dismantling, packing and inventory at your address | One day |
| Transport to the port | A truck to Jeddah or Dammam port | Hours from the western cities, and one to two days from the distant cities |
| Export and waiting for the ship | Export clearance and loading on board | 2–4 days |
| Sailing | The Red Sea, then the Suez Canal, then the Mediterranean | 10–20 days from Jeddah |
| Clearance in Libya | Declaration, inspection and payment of duties | Days, depending on the port and how complete the file is |
| Delivery | From the port to the consignee’s city | One to three days |
What lengthens the time?
- Waiting for consolidation: a shared container does not move until it is full.
- Transhipment: some lines change vessel at an intermediate port in the Mediterranean.
- The port of departure: sailing from Dammam adds about a week, because the ship sails round the Arabian Peninsula.
- An incomplete file: an error in the invoice or the list of contents stops clearance in Libya.
- Congestion at the Libyan port and the land crossings: it varies from port to port and season to season.
The general comparison of methods is on the shipping methods comparison page, and times to other countries on the transit times page.
Shipping prices from Saudi Arabia to Libya
The price has three parts: transport from your city to the port, then the sea, land or air freight, then the services in Libya if you ask for delivery to the door. Anyone who gives you a single figure before knowing your shipment either raises it to be safe or lowers it and adds to it later. These are the prices our services start from, and the container prices are sea freight from Jeddah port:
| What you ship | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| A carton | Consolidated sea or land freight | SAR 140 |
| Per kilogram above 100 kg | Consolidated freight | SAR 5.5 per kilogram |
| A cubic metre | Part-load sea freight | SAR 415 |
| A small load | Minimum charge per shipment | SAR 1,380 |
| A bedroom | Part load | SAR 1,650 |
| A small car | RoRo or shared container | SAR 3,220 |
| A 20ft container | Full container from Jeddah port | SAR 4,600 |
| A 40ft container | Full container from Jeddah port | SAR 5,200 |
| Air freight | From Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam airports | SAR 28 per kilogram |
| Documents | Express service | SAR 83 |
| Heavy equipment and trucks | RoRo or flat-rack container | Set on request according to dimensions and weight |
For comparison, this is what the market asks on the Libya route, and it sits above the table: a small car at SAR 3,500 to 5,000, a bedroom at SAR 1,800 to 2,500, a cubic metre at SAR 450 to 650, a kilogram on large loads at SAR 6 to 9, and a single carton at SAR 150 to 350. A small parcel sent by international express courier is quoted at roughly SAR 360 to 630. Because shipping lines keep adjusting container freight, we lock the price of your container on the very day you book. The full explanation is in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
| What sets the price | Its effect |
|---|---|
| The method | Sea is the most economical, then land, then air, the fastest and highest |
| Volume or weight | By the cubic metre or container type at sea, and by weight in the air. Work it out with the volume calculator |
| The type of goods | Refrigerated, sensitive and hazardous-classified goods are priced separately |
| The collection city | The further it is from the port, the larger the inland transport item |
| The Libyan port and the scope of service | Freight differs between ports, and between delivery at the port and delivery to the door |
| Added services | Packing, dismantling, assembly, storage and insurance |
| The season | Before Ramadan and the Eids and in summer, demand and price rise |
How do you lower the cost?
- Choose a shared container for small and medium volumes.
- If your shipment exceeds 12 to 14 cubic metres, compare the price of a 20ft container with the price per metre.
- Book three weeks before Ramadan, the Eids and summer.
- Ask for the whole service in one itemised price, rather than separate services from several parties.
- Choose the Libyan port nearest the consignee’s city, since transport inside Libya is costly over long distances.
The pricing items are explained on the pricing factors page.
Shipping to Libya from the cities of the Kingdom
We collect from every city in the Kingdom, and the difference between one city and another is a single thing: how far it is from the port of departure. The western cities are near Jeddah port, so inland transport there takes hours. Shipments from Riyadh, Qassim, Tabuk and Abha travel by road for a day or two before they reach the quay. The Eastern Province has two options: road transport to Jeddah, or sailing from Dammam on a longer voyage. This is a summary of each city, with its detailed article where one exists:
| Collection city | Nearest port | Inland distance | Door-to-door time by sea | Detailed article |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jeddah | Jeddah Islamic Port | Inside the city | 14–30 days | Shipping company from Jeddah to Libya |
| Makkah | Jeddah port | About 80 km | 14–30 days | Shipping company from Mecca to Libya |
| Madinah | Yanbu or Jeddah port | About 220 km to Yanbu, and 420 km to Jeddah | 14–30 days | Shipping company from Madinah to Libya |
| Riyadh | Jeddah port, although Dammam is nearer | About 950 km to Jeddah, and 400 km to Dammam | 18–35 days | Shipping company from Riyadh to Libya |
| Dammam, Khobar and Jubail | King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam | Inside the province, and about 1,350 km to Jeddah | 18–35 days via Jeddah, and about a week longer from Dammam | International shipping company in Dammam |
| Taif | Jeddah port | About 170 km | 14–30 days | Served from Jeddah |
| Qassim: Buraydah and Unaizah | Jeddah port | About 900 km | 18–35 days | Served with the Riyadh or Madinah runs |
| Tabuk | Duba port for land, and Jeddah for sea | About 180 km to Duba, and 1,000 km to Jeddah | 18–35 days by sea, and 10–20 days by land | The nearest to the Red Sea ferry |
| Abha, Khamis Mushait and Jazan | Jeddah port | About 700 km from Abha | 16–32 days | Carried by closed truck to Jeddah |
Collection runs the same way in every city: a crew packs and inventories at your address, and a closed truck carries the shipment to the port for the date of the booked ship, so it does not wait in the yard. A car is collected by a carrier from the showroom, auction or home. In Makkah and Madinah large trucks enter the central area at regulated hours that tighten in Ramadan and Hajj, so we confirm the hours in force before loading day. The cities we serve are on the cities page.
Sea freight from Saudi Arabia to Libya: a full or a shared container?
Sea freight is the most economical choice for any large or heavy shipment: a whole home’s furniture, a car, building materials or bulk goods. The ship leaves Jeddah Islamic Port, crosses the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, and berths at Misrata, Tripoli, Khoms, Benghazi or Tobruk. It comes in two systems, and choosing the right one saves money or days:
| Comparison | Full container | Shared container (part load) |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | The whole container, 20ft or 40ft | What your shipment occupies by the cubic metre |
| Time | 14–30 days | 20–40 days including consolidation time |
| Protection | Sealed at loading and opened only in Libya | Consolidated and sorted with other people’s shipments |
| Clearance | Faster, because it does not wait for other people’s files | Follows the completion of the files for the whole container |
| Best for | A whole home, a car with belongings, or large cargo | Cartons, a few pieces of furniture, or trial goods |
| Price starts from | SAR 4,600 for a 20ft container from Jeddah port | SAR 415 per cubic metre |
How much does each container take? About 28 cubic metres in a 20ft, which is enough for the furniture of a flat with two or three rooms. About 58 cubic metres in a 40ft, so it takes a whole home, or a car together with furniture. Once your shipment reaches 12 to 14 cubic metres or more, the gap between the part-load price and a full container becomes small, and the full container is the safer of the two. So ask for both prices together and compare them. The container sizes page has the dimensions, and the sea freight page has the service.
Jeddah or Dammam: which port does your shipment sail from?
The short answer: from Jeddah in most cases, even if your city is nearer to Dammam. Jeddah Islamic Port is on the Red Sea, and a ship from it heads north straight to the Suez Canal. King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam is on the Arabian Gulf, and a ship from it passes the Strait of Hormuz, then the Arabian Sea, then Bab al-Mandab before it reaches the Red Sea. That is why most shipments from Riyadh and Qassim are carried by road to Jeddah, despite the distance.
| Comparison | Jeddah Islamic Port | King Abdulaziz Port, Dammam |
|---|---|---|
| Location | The Red Sea | The Arabian Gulf |
| Route to Libya | Direct to the Suez Canal | Round the Arabian Peninsula first |
| Sailing time | 10–20 days | About a week longer |
| Serves | The western, central, southern and northern regions | Heavy Eastern Province shipments that are not urgent |
| When we choose it | For most shipments | When road transport to Jeddah costs more than the extra days are worth |
Yanbu port is a third option for shipments from Madinah and its surroundings when a suitable sailing is available there. We name the port of departure and the ship’s date for you before loading. The ports we work from are on the ports and gateways page.
Car shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya

A car is shipped to Libya in one of three ways: on a RoRo vessel, in a dedicated container, or in a container shared with other cars. The price starts from SAR 3,220 for a small car. It is the most requested service on this route, because the Kingdom has new and used cars in good condition that a Libyan citizen buys for himself or a trader for his showroom. Cars usually leave from Jeddah port, and from Dammam for cars in the Eastern Province.
| Method | How it works | Suits | What you should know |
|---|---|---|---|
| RoRo | The car is driven up the ship’s ramp, secured in its deck, and driven off at the Libyan port | Ordinary cars, pick-ups, trucks and buses | The car must run, and must be completely empty |
| Dedicated container | A 20ft container for one car, or a 40ft for two. Secured with straps and timber chocks and sealed | Luxury, new and classic cars | The highest protection and price, and it accepts declared belongings with the car |
| Shared container | Several cars for different customers in a 40ft container, with the freight divided | Showroom traders, and those in no hurry | It waits for the container to fill before it moves |
The difference between the methods is in protection, price and date. RoRo has the simplest handling, and the car is not covered on it because it is driven to its place. A container isolates the car from air and salt for the whole voyage. The comparison is on the RoRo car shipping and container car shipping pages.
Anyone who intends to drive the car himself overland through Egypt towards Libya, rather than ship it by sea, is normally asked for a carnet de passages (trip ticket), which is issued before leaving the Kingdom. Transit requirements change, so we check what is currently required for you before you travel. It is explained on the carnet (trip ticket) page.
Car documents and the conditions for importing it into Libya
Make sure the car can enter Libya before you pay for it. Libya restricts the age of incoming used cars, and calculates duties on the car’s value, engine size and year of manufacture. These rules change by official decision from time to time, so do not rely on old information. A car that is refused, or charged duties you did not expect, costs you more than the whole freight.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Proof of ownership | The registration, or the notarised sale contract and showroom invoice if recently bought |
| Purchase invoice | Stamped, showing the model, year, chassis number and price. The customs value is assessed on it |
| Export certificate | From the traffic department, after fines are paid and the Saudi plates are surrendered. Mandatory for the car to leave |
| Details of both parties | The sender’s ID or passport, and the Libyan consignee’s name, national number or passport, address and phone |
| Bill of lading | Issued after loading, and used to collect the car at the Libyan port |
| Photographed condition report | Photos and video from every angle before shipping, the basis of any claim |
| Commercial documents | Shipping several cars in a showroom’s name may need a certificate of origin or extra papers, which we tell you about in advance |
| Age of the car | The ceiling is laid down by the Libyan authorities and revised by decision; the figure currently quoted is around 10 years counted from the year of manufacture. We check the decision in force for you before you buy |
| Libyan duties | On value, engine size and year of manufacture. Small and medium engines pay less |
Before you agree with the seller, send us three details: the model, the year of manufacture and the engine size. With them we answer two questions: will Libya accept the car, and roughly what will it cost you until it carries its Libyan plate? Anyone buying for a showroom should start with the Libyan market itself: which categories are in demand there? A car with an economical engine pays lower duties and sells sooner. The car shipping guide page gives the general explanation.
The car’s journey from the showroom to Libyan registration
A car passes eight stations between the day of purchase and the day the Libyan plate is fitted. We send you a photographed update at each one:
- Checks before purchase: the car is free of any restriction or financial obligation that blocks the export certificate.
- Collection and inspection: a carrier collects it from the showroom, auction or your home in any city, documenting the body, paint, tyres and cabin.
- Export papers: surrendering the plates, obtaining the export certificate from the traffic department, and preparing the full file.
- Transport to the port: to Jeddah or Dammam port, according to the car’s location and the most suitable line.
- Securing or boarding: inside the container with straps, or driven onto the RoRo vessel, then the bill of lading is issued.
- Sailing and tracking: you follow the ship by the bill of lading or container number until it berths.
- Clearance and payment of duties: our agent in Misrata, Benghazi, Tripoli or Khoms files the declaration and follows the inspection and assessment of duties until release.
- Delivery and registration: the owner takes the car from the port yard, or a carrier brings it to his city. He then registers it with the Libyan traffic authority before the statutory period runs out, taking the release papers with him.
The cost of a car is not one figure but several items. Knowing each one shows you where to save:
| Cost item | What sets it | How to save on it |
|---|---|---|
| Sea freight | The method, the car’s size, the Libyan port and the season | A shared container or RoRo for ordinary cars, and early booking |
| Inland transport in the Kingdom | The distance from your city to the port | We choose the port nearest the car’s location |
| Documents and securing | Traffic procedures, the bill of lading and lashing materials | Included in the complete service |
| Libyan customs duties | The invoice value, engine size and year of manufacture | Choose an economical engine, and work out customs before paying |
| Clearance and handling | The Libyan port and how complete the file is | A complete file spares you storage charges |
| Insurance | The car’s value and the type of cover | We do not advise skipping it for valuable cars |
Luxury and classic cars and heavy equipment
Vehicles are not all shipped the same way. A luxury car and a rare classic have an arrangement that protects their paint and low body. A truck, a bus and an excavator do not fit an ordinary container at all, so they go by RoRo or flat-rack container. Contractors and companies working on reconstruction projects in Libya rely on this service.
- Luxury and sports cars: they share a container with nothing else. Their corners and mirrors are padded, they are tied down at the wheels with soft straps kept clear of the paintwork, and they are driven by someone used to low-slung bodies.
- Classic cars: detailed documentation of condition before shipping, and insurance at market value.
- Trucks and buses: on RoRo vessels, charged by the linear or cubic metre.
- Excavators and project equipment: on flat-rack containers or RoRo after the dimensions and weight are studied.
- Before handing over any vehicle: leave the tank at a quarter or below, clear out the cabin, photograph the odometer, and keep the registration, invoice and export certificate both on paper and as digital files.
The details are on the heavy equipment shipping page, and in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Land freight from Saudi Arabia to Libya across Egypt

There is no continuous road between the Kingdom and Libya, since the Red Sea and Egypt lie between them. So land freight runs by truck and ferry: the truck heads to Duba port in the Tabuk region, boards the ferry as it is with its load, and comes off on the Egyptian coast, usually at Safaga port. It then crosses Egypt westwards to the Salloum border post, and enters Libya at the Musaid post. It takes 10 to 20 days, depending on procedures at the crossings.
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| From your city to Duba | The closed truck is loaded, then drives to the port on the Red Sea coast |
| The Red Sea ferry | The truck boards as it is, so the load is neither taken off nor reloaded |
| The Egyptian coast | Inspection and transit procedures at the port of arrival |
| Crossing Egypt | More than 1,200 km from the Red Sea to the western border |
| Salloum → Musaid | Exit procedures from Egypt and entry into Libya |
| Inside Libya | Tobruk about 140 km from the crossing, Benghazi about 600 km, then the coastal road westwards |
When is land your best option?
- For the cities of eastern Libya: Tobruk, Derna, Bayda and Benghazi are nearer the crossing than any port in the west.
- For furniture and general goods: when you want a shorter time than sea and a lower price than air.
- For refrigerated foodstuffs: refrigerated trucks at a controlled temperature all the way.
- For collection from more than one point: the truck gathers from several Saudi cities in one trip.
- When it does not suit: cars, very small loads, and the western cities far from the crossing.
The land time is affected by working hours at the crossings and procedures between the countries, so we give you a realistic margin and not a promise that cannot be kept. The details are on the land freight page.
Shipping furniture and household goods from Saudi Arabia to Libya
A whole home’s furniture ships in a 20ft or 40ft container, and a single bedroom starts from SAR 1,650 as a part load. A family returning to Libya moves years of its life, and its furniture will stay in the container for weeks between the damp of the sea and the roll of the ship. Two things protect it: packing that resists moisture, and stowage that prevents movement. The service goes through these steps:
- Survey: by photos or at home, to estimate the volume and choose the container.
- Dismantling: we take apart wardrobes, majlis sets and bedrooms, and the screws and hinges of each piece go into a numbered bag fastened to it.
- Packing: wood is wrapped in blankets, mirrors and glass in bubble wrap, appliances go into double-wall cartons, and ornaments and chandeliers into wooden crates.
- Inventory: a numbered list of every piece and carton, of which you take a copy, used at customs and for checking at delivery.
- Loading: in a container of your own if it is a whole home, or in a shared container if the pieces are few.
- In Libya: unloading and carrying into the home, and assembly of what was dismantled if you ask for it.
Used personal furniture is in most cases treated at customs differently from new commercial goods. A clear list of contents, with proof that the items are used and personal, eases its passage. Libya’s electricity is 230 volts, much like the Kingdom’s, but the sockets differ, so your appliances may need a plug adaptor. The details are on the furniture shipping page.
Shipping parcels and personal effects to Libya
A parcel ships by the carton from SAR 140, by the kilogram from SAR 5.5 above 100 kg, or by air from SAR 28 per kilogram. Most requests on this route are not containers but gifts for family, clothes, a returning expatriate’s belongings, purchases from shops, and bags over the airline’s weight.
- Collection: from your door in any city, and we repack the parcel if it would not withstand the journey.
- The carton: double-wall, and no more than 30 kg so it is easy to carry.
- Consignee details: the full three-part name, city, district and two phone numbers.
- Declaration: an honest description of the contents and their value, which is what protects the parcel from being held.
- Prohibited items: do not include a banned item however small, since one parcel stops the whole container.
The details are on the parcel shipping page.
Shipping commercial goods: dates, foodstuffs and building materials
The Libyan trader buys many kinds of goods from the Kingdom, and each has its shipping method and documents. We collect directly from the supplier, combine purchases from several suppliers in one container, and prepare the file before the goods leave their city. These are the busiest categories on the route:
| Category | Shipping method | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Dates from Qassim, Madinah and Al-Ahsa | A dry or refrigerated container, or a refrigerated truck overland | Health certificate, certificate of origin and expiry date |
| Foodstuffs | A dry or refrigerated container, depending on the item | Health certificates and a clear product label |
| Building materials: marble, ceramics, sanitary ware and paints | Strapped pallets in a full container | Planned weight distribution inside the container |
| Appliances and electronics | Sea with shock- and moisture-resistant packing, or air for high value | An invoice detailing the models |
| Clothing and fabrics | Bales and cartons in consolidated freight | A packing list with count and weight |
| New commercial furniture | In factory packing with a layer of sea protection | The factory invoice and certificate of origin |
| Spare parts and industrial equipment | Sea for quantities, and air for urgent parts | Part numbers on the invoice |
A regular importer gets a fixed monthly schedule and a price agreed in advance, so we become his logistics arm from the Saudi supplier to his store in Libya. The details are on the commercial shipping page.
Packing before the journey
Weak packing is the first cause of damaged shipments. The journey to Libya involves things short transport does not: moisture that condenses inside the container as the temperature changes between night and day, a constant roll that moves anything not secured, and cranes that handle the container more than once. Sea packing allows for all three:
- Against moisture: tight plastic wrap, and desiccant bags inside appliance cartons and inside the container.
- Against impact: layers of bubble wrap, protective corners, corrugated cartons with two walls, and anything of high value goes into a timber crate.
- Stowage: heavy items at the bottom and light ones on top, gaps filled, and the weight spread across the container floor.
- Labels: a number on every piece that matches the list of contents.
Packing methods are in the packing guide, and securing inside the container on the packing and lashing page.
Documents and customs clearance for shipping to Libya
The file is reviewed before the shipment moves. A missing paper is corrected in the Kingdom in an hour, and at the port of arrival it means days and storage charges. When the shipment arrives, our broker in Libya takes over the file: a customs declaration, then inspection, then assessment and payment of duties in coordination with the consignee, then the release order. These are the documents by type of shipment:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Furniture and personal effects | A detailed list of contents, the sender’s ID, the consignee’s passport or card, and the bill of lading | Proof that they are used and personal usually earns easier treatment |
| Commercial goods | A commercial invoice detailing items and values, a packing list, a certificate of origin, and a bill of lading | Some items need an import permit or a health or conformity certificate |
| A car | The registration, purchase invoice, export certificate and bill of lading | Duties are on value, engine size and year of manufacture |
| Parcels | A description of the contents and value, and the consignee’s details | Within the limits of personal use |
Customs duties in the country of arrival fall on the consignee, and we estimate their approximate amount for him before shipping so that he is not surprised. The documents are explained on the shipping documents page, and the procedures on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped to Libya or needs a permit
Some items are banned outright, and some ship with documents. The rule: ask about any item you are unsure of before packing it. A correct declaration protects your shipment from being held, and protects you from liability.
| Item | Ruling |
|---|---|
| Narcotics and psychotropic substances | Prohibited |
| Liquor and alcoholic drinks | Prohibited |
| Weapons, ammunition and explosives | Prohibited |
| Banned publications and indecent material | Prohibited |
| Counterfeit currency and counterfeit goods | Confiscated |
| Medicines and supplements | With prescriptions and documents |
| Foodstuffs | With health certificates and an expiry date |
| Plants and agricultural products | With a plant quarantine certificate |
| Wireless communication devices | With a prior permit |
| Batteries, perfumes and liquids | Subject to special conditions in air freight |
The general list is on the prohibited items page.
The Libyan ports and cities we deliver to

We deliver to five Libyan ports, and then to the inland cities by road. The port is chosen by the consignee’s city, because the wrong port means long and costly road transport after arrival. Misrata is one of Libya’s busiest commercial ports, lies within the Misrata Free Zone, and serves the west, the centre and the south. Benghazi is the gateway to the east. After the ship berths comes clearance and then delivery:
| Port | Region | Cities it serves |
|---|---|---|
| Misrata | West and centre | Misrata, Zliten, Sirte, Tarhuna, and Sabha and the southern cities |
| Tripoli | West | Tripoli, Zawiya, Sabratha, Gharyan |
| Khoms | West | Khoms and its surroundings, and an alternative to Tripoli when it is congested |
| Benghazi | East | Benghazi, Marj, Bayda, Ajdabiya |
| Tobruk | Far east | Tobruk, Derna, with the Musaid land crossing nearby |
We also store the shipment temporarily through our agents at the destination if the consignee needs time before taking delivery. Give the consignee’s full name, city, district and a Libyan mobile number, since a clear address shortens the delivery day.
Air freight from Saudi Arabia to Libya

Air freight arrives within 2 to 7 days including clearance, and starts from SAR 28 per kilogram. The shipment leaves King Khalid Airport in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah or King Fahd Airport in Dammam. It reaches Mitiga Airport in Tripoli, Benina in Benghazi or Misrata Airport, usually through a transit station. It is for documents, spare parts, medicines and anything a job or a deal depends on.
| Departure airport | Serves | Usual arrival airport |
|---|---|---|
| King Khalid International, Riyadh | Riyadh, Qassim and the central region | Mitiga, Benina or Misrata |
| King Abdulaziz International, Jeddah | Jeddah, Makkah and Taif, and Madinah when no flight is available from its airport | Mitiga, Benina or Misrata |
| King Fahd International, Dammam | Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa | Mitiga, Benina or Misrata |
- Charging: a parcel has two weights, actual and volumetric, and you are billed on the higher one. To find the volumetric figure, multiply length by width by height in centimetres and divide the result by 6000, or use the volumetric weight calculator.
- Compact packing: a light, bulky parcel is charged on its volume, so reducing the volume without touching the protection saves money.
- Price: from SAR 28 per kilogram, and documents by express from SAR 83.
- Restricted by air: batteries, liquids, pressurised containers and perfumes in quantity, and we tell you what should move to sea.
- From the airport to the door: we handle release at the Libyan airport and delivery to the consignee’s address if you ask.
- What it does not suit: furniture, building materials and bulky goods.
The details are on the air freight page.
Door to door, and storage before and after shipping
Door-to-door service means you do not visit a single office. Our crew comes to your address in any city, packs and loads, completes the export papers, ships by sea, land or air, clears in Libya, then hands over to the consignee at his door, checked against the list. It is what the busy expatriate, the relocating family and the trader who wants to concentrate on his trade ask for.
You may not be ready to ship at once. Your home in Libya has not been handed over yet, or your goods are coming together from several suppliers, or you are gathering purchases in batches. So we store your shipment in a closed, monitored warehouse, inventoried and in order, until the ship’s date. The details are on the door-to-door shipping and storage pages.
Steps for shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya
- Contact: you describe your shipment with photos, and give your city and the consignee’s city in Libya.
- Method and price: we suggest the most suitable method and port, and you receive the price itemised.
- Booking: we set the collection day and ask for photos of the documents.
- Collection and packing: at your address, with a numbered list of contents and photos.
- Documents and export: a complete file is reviewed, then the Saudi port procedures.
- Shipping and tracking: the bill of lading or container number, and an update at every stage.
- Clearance in Libya: our agent completes the procedures up to the release order.
- Delivery: at the port or to the consignee’s door, checked against the list.
Tracking and insurance
From the day of collection you have a reference number, and from the day of sailing the bill of lading and container numbers, with which you can follow the ship yourself. We notify you at every station: left the Saudi port, arrived at the Libyan port, clearance started, release issued, out for delivery. Insurance is the last layer of protection, turning a rare incident into an orderly compensation.
- Tracking: the shipping line has a website that shows the vessel’s position hour by hour, and all you need to search it is your container or bill of lading number. The steps are on the track your shipment page.
- Documentation: photos of every piece before packing and after loading, the basis of any claim.
- Insurance: it is not compulsory, and its premium is a percentage of the value you declare. Our view is that you should not go without it when the shipment is a car, a whole home’s furniture or electronics. The cargo insurance page explains it.
- On receipt: check the pieces against the list and note any remark before signing.
Shipping from Libya to Saudi Arabia
We also ship the opposite way. Our agents at the Libyan ports take in your shipment there, it is loaded on a vessel for Jeddah Islamic Port, and once it is cleared we carry it to your city in the Kingdom, wherever that is. A Saudi who has finished working in Libya and comes back with used personal effects needs a list of contents, and before shipping we go over the exemption conditions currently applied with him. Commercial goods are a different matter: the Kingdom’s duties and tax fall on them, each by its type.
Tips before shipping to Libya
- Start with the consignee’s city and not the price, since it decides the port and the method.
- Photograph your shipment yourself before handing it over, in addition to our documentation.
- Make the consignee’s name on the documents match his passport or national number letter for letter.
- Keep paper and digital copies of the invoice, bill of lading and list of contents.
- Ask for the all-in price: shipping, clearance and delivery, which is usually cheaper than buying each service separately.
- Do not ship at the last minute before a season, when ships fill up and prices rise.
How do you choose a shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Libya?
Six questions reveal a company before you hand it your shipment. A company that explains the expected duties honestly is better than one that says “everything is simple” and then disappears at the first obstacle:
| What you ask about | Reassuring sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Registration and premises | A commercial registration and an address you can visit | An anonymous account and a mobile number only |
| Experience on the Libya route | Asks about the consignee’s city, then suggests the port | One port for all of Libya |
| Price | Itemised from collection to delivery | A cheap figure with no idea what it covers |
| The agent in Libya | A known broker at the port of arrival | Its role ends at the Saudi quay |
| Documentation and tracking | An official bill of lading in your name, a tracking number and collection photos | A handwritten receipt and a verbal promise |
| Customs and time | An estimate of the duties, and a time with a realistic margin | “All cars get in” and “one week by sea” |
Common mistakes when shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya
- Paying for the car before confirming that its age and engine are accepted in Libya.
- Leaving personal belongings in a car shipped by RoRo.
- Choosing a Libyan port far from the consignee’s city because its freight is lower.
- Insisting on the nearest Saudi port without counting the sailing time from it.
- Loading the container with no inventory, so clearance is delayed.
- Ordinary packing for a sea shipment, with no protection from moisture.
- Comparing a “to the port” price with a “to the door” price as if they were the same.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya
How much does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya cost?
The price depends on what you ship. A 40ft container starts from SAR 5,200 and a 20ft from SAR 4,600, both from Jeddah port. A small car is from SAR 3,220, a bedroom from SAR 1,650, a cubic metre of part-load sea freight from SAR 415, and a carton from SAR 140. Air freight is from SAR 28 a kilogram. The last figure is then settled by your city, the Libyan port and the size of the shipment. To ask: 0552803439.
How long does shipping from Saudi Arabia to Libya take?
By sea in a full container 14 to 30 days from Jeddah and the western cities, and 18 to 35 days from Riyadh and the cities far from the port. As a part load 20 to 40 days. By land across Egypt 10 to 20 days. By air 2 to 7 days.
What is the best way to ship to Libya?
Sea for cars, whole-home furniture and large cargo, because it is the most economical. Land across Egypt for medium loads and for the cities of eastern Libya. Air for documents, spare parts, medicines and anything that cannot wait.
Which Saudi port does the shipment leave from?
Usually Jeddah Islamic Port, because a ship from it enters the Suez Canal directly. King Abdulaziz Port in Dammam is used when it suits a shipment from the Eastern Province, and its voyage is longer because the ship sails round the Arabian Peninsula.
Which Libyan port is best for my shipment?
It follows the consignee’s city. Misrata, Tripoli and Khoms for the western and central cities, and Benghazi and Tobruk for the east. We choose the port that combines the lowest total cost with the earliest date.
Can I ship a used car I bought in Saudi Arabia to Libya?
Yes, if it meets the Libyan import conditions and you complete its export with the Saudi traffic department. The age condition changes by decision, and the figure in circulation today is about 10 years from the year of manufacture. Send us the model, year and engine size before you buy and we will confirm what applies.
What documents are needed to ship a car to Libya?
Five papers before loading: proof of ownership, which is the registration or a notarised sale contract; then the purchase invoice; then the export certificate issued by the traffic department; then the ID of whoever sends the car; then the details of whoever receives it in Libya, with his passport or national number. The bill of lading itself comes out once the car is loaded.
Can I put belongings inside the shipped car?
The answer depends on the shipping method. A car sent by RoRo has to be completely empty, with no exception. If you book it a dedicated container, though, you may load belongings with it, provided every one of them is written in the list of contents.
How does land freight from Saudi Arabia to Libya work?
The truck heads to Duba port, boards the Red Sea ferry as it is to the Egyptian coast, then crosses Egypt to the Salloum border post and enters Libya at Musaid. It takes 10 to 20 days and suits the cities of eastern Libya best.
Do you collect from the door in any Saudi city?
Yes. We collect from Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah, Madinah, Dammam, Khobar, Qassim, Tabuk, Abha and every other city in the Kingdom, and deliver to the consignee’s door in the Libyan cities.
Can I ship a small quantity, or must I book a full container?
You can ship any quantity. A single carton goes by consolidated freight from SAR 140, a cubic metre in a shared container from SAR 415, and you pay only for the volume of your shipment.
Who pays customs duties in Libya?
Whoever receives the shipment in Libya pays them. Our broker’s part there is to lodge the declaration, attend the inspection, and give the consignee an approximate figure for the duties before he settles them.
Do you ship dates and foodstuffs to Libya?
Yes, in dry or refrigerated containers or by refrigerated truck overland, with the health certificate, certificate of origin and expiry date.
Do you store the shipment before shipping?
Yes, in our warehouses until your goods are fully gathered or your home in Libya is ready. The shipment is inventoried when it enters the warehouse.
Do you ship from Libya to Saudi Arabia?
Yes, the service runs both ways. Our agents take in your shipment at the Libyan port, it sails to Jeddah port, and we then deliver it to your city in the Kingdom.
