Who ships from Mecca to Sweden, and what do they ship?
Most people who ask for this route are not permanent residents of Makkah. They are Hajj and Umrah pilgrims who came from Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö, carrying purchases that an airline scale will not accept on a journey with a stopover and a change of aircraft. After them come Makkah families with a son or brother living in Sweden, then residents moving there on a work contract or for family reunion, then traders in gifts and dates. Each of them differs in volume, urgency and customs standing:
| Sender | Usual shipment | Best method | How it is treated in Sweden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hajj or Umrah pilgrim from Sweden | Suitcases, dates, prayer rugs and abayas | Air via Jeddah airport | Personal effects with a contents list |
| Group organiser | A whole group’s luggage to one city | Consolidated sea freight, or air at a large weight | Sorted by owner’s name on arrival |
| Makkah family with a relative there | Dates, coffee, clothes and Eid gifts | Air parcel | Gift between individuals within the value limit |
| Person moving for residence or work | Household furniture, appliances and sometimes a car | Part load or a dedicated container | Transfer-of-residence relief on application |
| Trader | Dates, rugs, prayer beads and Hajj supplies | By cubic metre or container, with samples by air | Duty by tariff heading and 25% tax |
| Official body | Documents, printed matter and exhibits | Express or air | According to the consignee’s status |
The shipping route from Mecca to Sweden and how long it takes
Every shipment leaving Makkah starts with a short truck journey westwards and then branches: what is weighed in kilograms heads for Jeddah airport, and what is measured in cubic metres heads for its port. The sea route to Sweden is among the longest in Europe; the vessel crosses the Suez Canal and the whole Mediterranean, then climbs the Atlantic coast to the North Sea and the Kattegat. This is how the days fall for a dedicated container loaded in Makkah:
| Stage | What happens | Usual time |
|---|---|---|
| Packing and loading in Makkah | Dismantling, inventory and numbering, then stowing the container or closed truck | 1–2 days |
| Transfer to Jeddah port | About 80 km on the expressway, then the export declaration and the wait for the vessel | 3–6 days |
| Sea voyage | Suez, the Mediterranean, a European transhipment port, then Gothenburg | 20–26 days |
| Clearance in Gothenburg | Import declaration and the relief application or payment of tax | 2–4 working days |
| Delivery inside Sweden | Truck, or rail and then truck, to the address | 1–3 days |
The time differs by method, and these are the figures from the sender’s door in Makkah to the consignee’s door:
| Method | Where it leaves from | Time from Makkah | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated container | Jeddah Islamic Port | 30–40 days | A whole house, or a trader’s goods |
| Sea part load | Consolidation warehouse, then Jeddah port | 35–42 days | Cartons, one room of furniture and group luggage |
| Air freight | King Abdulaziz Airport, Jeddah | 3–6 days | Suitcases, gifts and samples |
| Express | King Abdulaziz Airport, Jeddah | 2–4 working days | Documents and small parcels |
What lengthens the time?
- Makkah’s seasons: in Ramadan and the days of Hajj the hours when trucks may enter narrow, so loading can slip a day or more if it is not booked early.
- A change of the line’s routing: some sailings go round the Cape of Good Hope instead of Suez, adding one to two weeks. We tell you your vessel’s routing when you book.
- The Swedish winter: snow slows distribution to the central and northern cities, and short daylight hours reduce the number of deliveries in a day.
- An incomplete file: a list that says only “personal items”, or a relief application that was never lodged, keeps the shipment at the port until the paperwork is complete.
Times for other destinations are on the transit times page.
From Mecca via Jeddah port to Gothenburg

Makkah is an inland mountain city with no coastline, so it has no port. The nearest sea is the Red Sea at Jeddah, home to Jeddah Islamic Port, the Kingdom’s largest port on that coast. Every Makkah container is therefore loaded there. The distance is short, about 80 km that a truck covers in roughly an hour and a half, so the lack of a port adds no more than half a day to the journey.
At the other end is the port of Gothenburg, on Sweden’s west coast at the mouth of the Göta river. It is the largest container port in Scandinavia, and a large share of Sweden’s containers enter through it. Its quays are linked by daily container trains to inland cities, including a line to the Stockholm area. Vessels from Jeddah, however, do not usually call there directly; they hand the container over at a hub port such as Hamburg, Rotterdam or Bremerhaven, and a feeder vessel completes the trip in two to four days.
| Point | Its role in the journey | What we do there |
|---|---|---|
| Your home or our warehouse in Makkah | Packing and inventory point | We stow the container at the door if the street is wide enough, otherwise at the warehouse with photo records |
| Makkah–Jeddah expressway | The only road leg inside the Kingdom | A truck with a numbered seal, within the permitted hours |
| Jeddah Islamic Port | Port of loading | Export declaration and handover of the container to the shipping line |
| European transhipment port | Change of vessel | Nothing required of the customer, and the container stays sealed |
| Port of Gothenburg | Port of arrival and clearance | Our agent lodges the declaration and arranges the truck or train |
The bill of lading we issue is a single one from Jeddah to Gothenburg, so the consignee has no dealings with the transhipment port and pays nothing there. When the address is in the far south and a suitable feeder is available to the port of Helsingborg near Malmö, we put both options to you and state the difference in days between them. The sea service is explained on the sea freight page, and what happens on the Jeddah quay in the article international sea freight from Jeddah.
Shipping prices from Mecca to Sweden
The price on this route is the sum of four items: collection in Makkah and trucking the shipment to Jeddah, the air or ocean freight, clearance in Sweden, and delivery from the airport or port to the address. The second is the largest, and its figures in the table below start from Jeddah airport or port. The first and the last depend on your district in Makkah and your city in Sweden, so they are calculated once both addresses are known:
| Shipment | Method | Price starts from |
|---|---|---|
| Suitcases, gifts and parcels | Air via Jeddah airport | SAR 23 per kilogram |
| Documents up to one kilogram | Express | SAR 83 |
| Parcel up to 5 kg | Express | SAR 110 |
| Furniture, luggage and cartons | Sea part load | SAR 5,500 |
| Full-house furniture | Dedicated container | SAR 11,000 |
| Saloon car | By sea from Jeddah port | SAR 2,800 |
| Transfer from Makkah to Jeddah port or airport | Closed truck or car transporter | Set on request by district and volume |
| 40-foot container and commercial goods | Container or cubic metre | Set on request |
An example: an Umrah pilgrim from Malmö leaves two suitcases and a carton of dates at his hotel in Aziziyah, with a chargeable weight of 46 kg. The air freight is 46 × 23, that is from SAR 1,058, plus collection from Makkah and delivery in Malmö. Had he paid excess baggage for those kilograms on a connecting flight, the amount would have been higher and he would have hauled the bags himself through two airports.
Prices circulating in the market for this route are few, as most advertisers publish no figure. Those that do circulate are far apart: air freight for parcels at SAR 10 to 20 per kilogram with some providers, a figure that usually ends at the arrival airport, and an international express parcel starting from around SAR 250. For a medium household container, figures between GBP 5,600 and 6,200 are mentioned; for the port-to-port freight of a 40-foot container about USD 1,900; and for sending large items by air more than GBP 10,000. For shipping a car together with its tax and fees the range is GBP 10,700 to 14,800, and for insurance about 1% of the value. The gap between these figures comes from what each offer includes.
| Factor | Its effect on a shipment from Makkah to Sweden |
|---|---|
| Weight or volume | Air goes by chargeable weight and sea by cubic metre. Try the CBM calculator before you call |
| Collection point in Makkah | A hotel in the central area or a house on a hillside needs a small vehicle ahead of the truck |
| Season | The weeks after Hajj and Ramadan are the peak for luggage shipping |
| Swedish city | Gothenburg is nearest the port, Stockholm is 470 km away, and the northern cities far more |
| Customs standing | Relief, or 25% tax on the value plus the freight |
How do you cut the cost?
- Separate the heavy from the urgent: dates, books and rugs in a sea carton, clothes and light gifts by air.
- Divide gifts into parcels in the recipients’ names so that each parcel stays within the relief limit.
- Complete the transfer-of-residence relief application before sailing; it is the biggest saving on household furniture.
The items are explained on the pricing factors page, and how container rates move in the article container shipping prices from Jeddah.
What is different about loading in Makkah?
Three things make loading in Makkah unlike any other city in the Kingdom: its terrain, its seasons and the kind of customers it has. The city lies between mountains, and many of its houses sit on slopes reached by narrow roads. The number of people in it multiplies in Ramadan and Dhul-Hijjah, so truck movement is regulated by hours announced by the competent authorities, and they change from one season to the next. And half our shipments from it leave hotel rooms, not homes. So we make a specific arrangement for each case:
| Situation | Effect on your shipment | Our arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| No port and no airport | A road leg to Jeddah before departure | Our truck moves on the day of collection, and the quotation states this item explicitly |
| Truck entry hours | The loading time is not open-ended | We confirm the hours in force before loading day and fix the appointment on them |
| Hillside houses and alleys | The container cannot reach the door | A small vehicle and porters carry the goods to the truck in the nearest wide street |
| Hotels in the central area | No parking and no space to pack | A quick collection by luggage trolley, with packing and final weighing at the warehouse in your presence or by photos |
| The last ten nights and the days of the holy sites | Closures and congestion | Collection before the season, or storage until it ends |
Shipping pilgrims’ luggage and gifts from Mecca to Sweden

A pilgrim coming from Sweden usually travels on a flight with a stopover, and on such journeys airlines sometimes charge for excess weight twice and set a limit on the weight of a single piece. He also returns with things that cannot be left behind: dates for every relative’s household, prayer rugs, prayer beads, abayas, copies of the Quran and toys for the children. The easier course is to travel with a cabin bag and let the rest of the luggage follow to the door of the flat.
Collection starts from the hotel room. Our representative calls you before arriving and goes up with the porter to the room door if the management permits, or waits for you in the lobby. He counts the pieces in front of you, weighs each one on a portable scale, and then writes the receipt. Whatever you bought in carrier bags we pack into reinforced cartons of our own, since a bag does not survive an international journey. This is the position for each item a pilgrim usually carries:
| Item | Do we ship it? | What applies in Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Suitcases and used clothes | Yes | Written on one line: used personal effects |
| Dates | Yes, in factory-sealed boxes | Dried fruit permitted for individuals, and exempt from the plant-health certificate under current practice |
| Prayer rugs, prayer beads and copies of the Quran | Yes | Listed with their number and value |
| Perfume and oud oil | In a limited quantity | A relieved gift holds no more than 50 grams of perfume, and air carriage is restricted |
| Zamzam water | No | The traveller carries the dedicated pack personally |
| Meat, dairy and ghee | No | Banned in individuals’ consignments from outside the European Union |
- Piece label: your name as in the passport, your Swedish city, your postcode and your mobile number there.
- Group luggage: gathered in one collection, with a number for each pilgrim, and delivered in Sweden to each person at their own address.
- What stays with you: passport, cash, gold, medicines and the Zamzam pack.
- Timing: hand over two days before you leave Makkah. Anyone leaving straight after Hajj hands over before the Day of Tarwiyah.
Packing methods are in the packing guide.
Shipping parcels and dates to family in Sweden
Sweden has a large Arab and Muslim community, and many Makkah households have a relative there. A parcel from Makkah to Sweden is therefore a familiar thing: a box of dates before Ramadan, an Eid outfit, coffee and cardamom, a copy of the Quran for a grandchild. These are small parcels that go by air, starting from SAR 110 for up to 5 kg and from SAR 23 for each kilogram above that. Swedish Customs distinguishes between a gift and something bought at the recipient’s request.
- Gift condition: from one individual to another, without payment, on an occasion that does not recur, and with the parcel marked as a gift along with its contents and value.
- Relief limit: under current practice SEK 600 for the total contents of the parcel. We confirm the limit in force before sending.
- Above the limit: duty and value added tax are collected, and the recipient is told the amount before delivery.
- Foodstuffs: dates, coffee, tea and spices are accepted, as are packaged biscuits and dry sweets. Anything with meat or dairy among its ingredients is left out of the parcel.
- Delivery: many postal parcels in Sweden are left at a neighbourhood pick-up point. Our parcels are delivered at the door, at a time sent to the recipient by text message.
The parcel service is explained on the parcel shipping page.
Moving sensitive documents and official records
A resident of Sweden needs papers from Makkah that can bear neither delay nor loss: attested birth and marriage certificates for the Migration Agency, academic documents for recognition of a degree, and powers of attorney and deeds to settle an inheritance or a sale. Organisations and offices send contracts, tender files and seals. These are not handled like parcels. A document goes by express service from SAR 83 and reaches the major Swedish cities in 2 to 4 working days.
- Packing: each document in a plastic sleeve, then a rigid cardboard envelope that will not bend, then a waterproof pouch closed with tamper-evident tape.
- Confidentiality: nothing on the outside of the envelope indicates the kind of papers, and the declaration reads “documents of no commercial value”.
- Delivery: to the named person only, against proof of identity and a signature, not to a neighbour and not to a pick-up point.
- Records and archives: large numbers of file boxes are numbered and inventoried by title, not by content, and go by air or in a sealed wooden case by sea.
Shipping furniture and appliances from Mecca to Sweden, and packing them
Whoever moves a home from Makkah to Sweden moves it from one climate to its opposite. The furniture is loaded in hot, dry air, spends a month in a steel container crossing humid seas, and is then unloaded in a cold country. That swing condenses moisture inside the container, so packing meant for a short trip is not enough. Makkah homes are also spacious, with large sitting rooms, while a Swedish flat is small and neatly planned, so sorting before packing is half the work.
- Sorting: we ask for the size of the Swedish flat and its number of rooms, and suggest what to ship and what to sell or give away in Makkah. The long sofa set and the six-door wardrobe are the first things reviewed.
- Appliances: Swedish electricity is 230 volts at 50 hertz with a round two-pin socket, while the Kingdom’s frequency is 60 hertz. Anything whose plate reads 50/60 hertz is shipped, and anything with a 60-hertz-only motor stays.
- Moisture: desiccant bags hung from the container roof and sides, and boards separating the cartons from its floor.
- Fragile pieces: mirrors, chandeliers and screens in heat-treated wooden crates stamped ISPM 15, as Europe requires.
The service is detailed on the furniture shipping page.
A dedicated container or a sea part load?
Volume settles the question first, and time second. Someone with less than half a container pays only for the cubic metres used in a part load, and the goods are combined with others at the consolidation warehouse. Someone with a whole house takes a dedicated container that is sealed at loading and not opened until clearance. In Makkah there is a third factor: a dedicated container needs a street to stand in, whereas a part load needs only a small truck that can reach any district.
| Comparison | Part load | 20-foot container | 40-foot container |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volume | Up to about 15 cubic metres | Up to 28 cubic metres | Up to 60 cubic metres |
| Suits | Cartons, group luggage and one or two rooms | A small to medium flat | A large house, or furniture plus a car |
| Loading in Makkah | Small truck to the warehouse | At the door or at the warehouse | In a wide street or at the warehouse |
| Time | 35–42 days | 30–40 days | 30–40 days |
| Price starts from | SAR 5,500 | SAR 11,000 for household furniture | Set on request |
What each container holds is on the container sizes page.
Transfer-of-residence relief in Sweden
Used furniture does not enter Sweden free of charges because it is used, but because its owner is moving their place of residence there and applies for relief. The application is lodged with Swedish Customs together with the import declaration, accompanied by the contents list and proof of the previous residence and of the move. Anyone who ships without an application is charged 25% tax on the value of the furniture plus its freight. These are the conditions in current practice, and we go over those in force with you before loading:
| Condition | What is required | What proves it from Makkah |
|---|---|---|
| Previous residence outside the European Union | At least one continuous year | The residence permit, and an attested tenancy contract or a letter from the employer |
| Ownership and use of the goods | Owned and used before the move; current practice is at least six months | A contents list stating they are used, and old invoices where available |
| Time limit for entry | Within a year of the date of the move | The date of the bill of lading and the final exit visa |
| After entry | No sale, loan or hire for one year | A declaration by the owner of the shipment |
The second half of the file is completed in Sweden: registration in the population register at the Tax Agency, and the residence permit. Because the sea takes more than a month, the owner of the furniture travels first and registers an address, so the container arrives with the paperwork already complete.
Shipping commercial goods from Mecca, and services for companies and institutions
Makkah’s trade with Sweden is small in volume and clear in kind: Hajj and Umrah supplies and gifts for the community’s shops, dates before Ramadan, and rugs and printed matter for Islamic centres. The Swedish importer answers to the authorities of that country for the conformity of what is imported with European Union rules, so we prepare the papers with the importer before the goods move from Makkah, not after they arrive. For establishments that ship regularly we set up a contract with fixed loading dates.
| Goods | Shipping method | What is required in Sweden |
|---|---|---|
| Packaged dates | Pallets in a container, or by air before Ramadan | A label in Swedish or a language the market accepts, with the importer’s name and address |
| Prayer rugs and textiles | By cubic metre | Statement of material and country of manufacture, and duty by tariff heading |
| Prayer beads, gifts and ornaments | Cartons by air or sea | An itemised invoice; nothing containing ivory or coral is admitted |
The importer needs a European customs identification number before the vessel arrives. For a company in Makkah we provide a tax invoice and a status report on every shipment, and we can distribute one shipment to more than one Swedish city after it is cleared in Gothenburg. Details are on the commercial shipping page.
Shipping cars and large vehicles from Mecca to Sweden
A car is not loaded into its container in Makkah. A car transporter takes it to Jeddah port, where it is secured inside a container with wheel straps and timber chocks, or driven aboard a roll-on/roll-off vessel when a sailing suits the destination. The price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon from Jeddah port. But the freight is the smallest part of the sum; what matters is what Sweden asks for once it arrives:
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| Before leaving the Kingdom | Surrender of plates and an export certificate from the traffic department, payment of fines, and a lien-release letter if the car is financed |
| Swedish Customs | 10% duty on the value plus the freight, then 25% tax on the total, or relief for someone moving residence |
| Verification of origin | An application to the Swedish Transport Agency with the original registration and proof of ownership |
| Registration inspection | A technical check of lighting, emissions and specifications; modifications to Gulf specifications may be required |
| Before driving | Swedish insurance, and winter tyres in the winter months when roads are icy |
An example: a car worth SAR 50,000 with freight of SAR 2,800. Duty at 10% of 52,800 is SAR 5,280, and tax at 25% of 58,080 is SAR 14,520, a total of SAR 19,800 before the inspection. So shipping an ordinary car only pays for someone bringing it in relieved as part of the effects of a move. Large vehicles, such as buses, trucks and plant, go on roll-on/roll-off vessels or on flat-rack containers and are priced on request, as is air freight for a rare or urgent car. The two methods are on the container car shipping and RoRo car shipping pages, plant on the heavy equipment shipping page, and the general conditions in the article car shipping from Saudi Arabia.
Swedish Customs and the documents required
Sweden is a member of the European Union, so its customs apply the common European tariff and add 25% value added tax on most goods. The tax is calculated on the value of the item plus the freight, the insurance and the duty. Clearance there is largely electronic, so it completes quickly when the file is correct and stops altogether when a number or a signature is missing. This is what is asked for each type:
| Type of shipment | Documents | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Hajj or Umrah pilgrim’s luggage | Passport copy, contents list, and the consignee’s address and Swedish personal identity number where there is one | New items are listed separately from used ones |
| Gift parcel | A statement of items and value, and the names of sender and recipient | The word “gift” is written on the parcel itself |
| Furniture of someone moving residence | Passport, residence permit or proof of population registration, relief application, contents list and bill of lading | The name on the bill of lading matches the passport letter for letter |
| Commercial goods | Invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin and the importer’s customs identification number | Extra certificates for food and cosmetics |
| Car | Original registration, export certificate, title or purchase invoice, and passport | Registration conditions are reviewed before booking |
In the Kingdom we handle the export declaration at the customs office of Jeddah port or airport. Each paper is explained on the shipping documents page, and the release stages on the customs clearance page.
What cannot be shipped from Mecca to Sweden, or needs a permit
The list of prohibited items on this route comes from three sources: what the Kingdom bans from export, what airlines refuse, and what Sweden and the European Union prohibit. What most often stops shipments from Makkah is ordinary things packed in good faith: a tin of local ghee, some cheese, a decorative dagger, or many bottles of oud oil. We go through the contents with you at collection, and these are the main items:
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| Zamzam water | Not shipped within luggage or parcels |
| Meat, dairy, ghee and cheese | Banned for individuals from outside the European Union |
| Fresh fruit and vegetables, and plants | Need a plant-health certificate |
| Medicines | A personal quantity with a prescription; some are classed as narcotics in Sweden |
| Daggers, swords and self-defence items | Some need a permit from the Swedish Police, so they are not shipped without asking |
| Loose lithium batteries and pressurised containers | Not carried by air |
The full list is on the prohibited items page.
Delivering Mecca shipments in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Malmö

Our agent in Sweden takes over the shipment at the port or airport, lodges the import declaration, and then agrees a day and a time window for delivery with the consignee. The three largest cities receive most shipments from Makkah: Stockholm, the capital, on the east coast; Gothenburg, where the port is; and Malmö in the far south, facing Denmark. Many consignees live in the suburbs rather than the city centres, and delivery reaches all of them.
| City | Distance from the port of Gothenburg | Suburbs we deliver to | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gothenburg | In the city itself | Angered, Hisingen and Mölndal | Delivery on the day of release or the next |
| Malmö | About 270 km | Rosengård, and neighbouring Lund | Truck the following day; older blocks without a lift |
| Stockholm | About 470 km | Kista, Rinkeby, Tensta and Södertälje | One day of haulage, and a parking permit in the city centre |
| Uppsala and Västerås | 370–450 km | Student housing districts | Delivered on the Stockholm run |
| Umeå and Luleå | 1,000 km or more | Northern cities | Two to four days, and more in winter |
A Swedish address has a form that cannot be skipped: street name and building number, then the four-digit flat number, then the five-digit postcode, the door code of the block, and a Swedish mobile number to receive the appointment message. Anyone who is not at home during the day sets an evening hour or a Saturday with the agent. Our other destinations are on the destinations page.
Air freight from Mecca to Sweden

Air freight is the route for urgent luggage and gifts, and it is what is asked for most from Makkah. Because the city has no airport, the shipment travels through King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah. It is collected in the morning from the hotel or home and enters the cargo village the same day, where it is weighed, security-screened and booked onto a flight. There is currently no regular direct flight between Jeddah and Stockholm, so the shipment flies to a transit airport and then to Arlanda airport north of the capital, or to Landvetter near Gothenburg, depending on the consignee’s address.
After landing, the agent clears the shipment at the airport and it leaves on a distribution vehicle for the address. Stockholm and Uppsala are served from Arlanda and Gothenburg from Landvetter, while Malmö is reached by truck from one of the two airports. The whole journey takes 3 to 6 days from the sender’s door in Makkah.
- Prices: from SAR 23 per kilogram, and the rate per kilogram falls as the weight band grows. Documents from SAR 83, and a parcel of up to 5 kg from SAR 110.
- Chargeable weight: the higher of the scale weight and the volumetric weight, the latter being the dimensions in centimetres multiplied together and divided by 6000. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
- Suited to: pilgrims’ suitcases, cartons of dates and gifts, clothes, samples and papers.
- Not accepted: perfume in quantity, oud oil in many bottles, loose lithium batteries, lighters and pressurised containers.
The service is on the air freight page, and our office in the article air freight office in Jeddah.
Shipping methods available: air and sea, and is there land freight?
There are only two routes to Sweden. Air is for what is carried by hand and expected within days, and sea for what fills a room or a house and can wait five weeks. We do not rely on land freight to Sweden; with us a truck works only at the two ends of the journey: from Makkah to Jeddah, and from Gothenburg to the address. The full overland route crosses a large number of borders and does not beat the container by enough to justify its cost.
The best thing someone relocating can do is combine the two: two suitcases by air with what the first two weeks require in winter clothes and papers, and the rest in the container. Someone sending small, repeated shipments chooses a sea part load and pays for the volume alone. We collect from all of Makkah’s districts: Aziziyah, Shisha, Shawqiyah, Sharaie, Awali, Naseem, Zahir, Rusaifah, Utaibiyah, Zaidi, Batha Quraysh and Kudai, and from the districts close to the Grand Mosque such as Misfalah, Jarwal and Ajyad. Each kind of place has its own way of collection, and the neighbouring towns are attached to the Makkah run heading for Jeddah:
| Collection point | Distance from Makkah | How we collect |
|---|---|---|
| Hotels in the central area | Inside the city | From the room or lobby by luggage trolley, with a small vehicle in the seasons |
| Hillside districts | Inside the city | A small vehicle to the truck in the main street |
| Al-Jumum | About 25 km | On the Makkah collection day |
| Bahrah | About 40 km | It lies on the Jeddah road, so it is loaded on the way |
| Taif | About 90 km | Brought in a day before loading |
The cities we serve are on the service cities page.
Temporary storage before shipping to Sweden
Storage on this route is a recurring need, not a side service. A pilgrim leaves Makkah for Madinah or for the holy sites and does not want to carry the shopping along. Someone relocating hands back a rented home before the Swedish residence permit is issued or the key to the flat is received. A trader gathers goods from several suppliers over weeks. In these cases the shipment stays in our closed warehouse until its time comes.
- Security: a closed warehouse monitored by cameras round the clock, entered by staff only.
- Duration: days for a pilgrim until the return from Madinah, weeks or months for someone relocating, charged by volume and time.
- Inventory: every piece enters with a number and a photo, and the list reaches you on the day of deposit.
- Consolidation: what you buy later is added to the same shipment, so it ships once and you pay a single minimum charge.
The terms are on the storage page.
Steps for shipping from Mecca to Sweden
- Contact: send to 0552803439 what you want to ship, the name of your hotel or district in Makkah, the Swedish city, and your departure date.
- Choosing the method: we suggest air, sea or both according to weight and date, and ask about your status in Sweden.
- Price: it reaches you itemised: collection from Makkah, freight, clearance and delivery.
- Appointment: we fix the collection time within the hours permitted for trucks, or send a small vehicle to the hotel.
- Collection: weighing, counting and numbering in front of you, then a signed receipt, then packing and the contents list in English.
- To Jeddah: the shipment is moved to the airport or port, and we issue the export declaration and the waybill or bill of lading.
- Follow-up: a tracking number and messages at take-off or sailing, and at transhipment and arrival.
- Delivery: the agent clears and calls the consignee, then the pieces are handed over by number and the receipt is signed.
Tracking and insuring the shipment
Someone who handed over suitcases at a hotel in Makkah and then flew home wants to know where they are without calling every day. Each file is therefore assigned to one member of staff who messages you at every move and answers from 7 am to 11 pm Saudi time. The difference from Swedish time is one hour in summer and two in winter, so our working hours cover the consignee’s whole day.
- Air tracking: the air waybill number is entered on the airline’s website and shows every airport the shipment has passed through.
- Sea tracking: the container number appears on the shipping line’s website, and we send you the feeder vessel’s name when the vessel changes. The method is on the track your shipment page.
- Insurance: an optional item at a percentage of the declared value, covering loss and damage throughout the journey. We advise it for furniture, cars and valuable gifts, and its terms are on the cargo insurance page.
Shipping from Sweden to Mecca
The opposite direction serves three cases: a pilgrim who sends luggage ahead so as not to carry it on a long journey, a family returning to settle in Makkah, and a buyer ordering Swedish goods or furniture. The agent collects from the address in Sweden, and the shipment arrives by air at Jeddah airport or by sea from Gothenburg at Jeddah Islamic Port. We then clear it and truck it to Makkah within the permitted hours, and deliver it at the home or hotel. Used personal effects enter with a contents list, new items pay a duty by type and 15% value added tax, and a car is subject to Saudi import conditions on age and specifications.
Home Safe’s tips before shipping from Mecca to Sweden
- Estimate the weight before you buy: work out what your ticket allows, and ship the rest instead of paying excess baggage.
- Ask the seller for sealed boxes of dates showing the weight and ingredients, as loose dates in bags are opened for inspection.
- Write your Swedish mobile number, not the Saudi one, on the bag label, because the delivery message goes to it.
- Do not put medicines in the shipment; carry them with you along with the prescription.
- Book collection some days before the end of the season, as demand doubles in the final week.
- For furniture: hand over six weeks before you travel, so that you do not wait in an empty flat.
How do you choose a shipping company from Mecca to Sweden?
During the Hajj season Makkah fills with people offering to ship luggage, and some of them vanish once the season ends. A few questions asked before handing over a suitcase are enough to tell them apart, since the answers reveal whether you are dealing with an establishment that knows the route or a middleman who collects first and looks for a carrier afterwards:
| Question | Good sign | Warning sign |
|---|---|---|
| Do you have a commercial registration? | A number that can be verified, and a stamped receipt in the establishment’s name | A handwritten slip with no stamp |
| How is the weight calculated? | A scale in front of you and each piece’s weight on the receipt | An estimate by eye, or “a price per bag” |
| Where does the shipment leave from? | Jeddah airport or port, naming the arrival airport or the port of Gothenburg | “It ships straight from Makkah” |
| Who delivers in Sweden? | An agent who clears and delivers to the door | “You collect it from the airport yourself” |

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Mecca to Sweden
What is the fastest way to ship belongings from Mecca to Sweden?
Air freight through King Abdulaziz Airport in Jeddah. We collect the suitcase or carton from your hotel or home in Makkah, and it reaches the consignee’s door in Stockholm, Gothenburg or Malmö within 3 to 6 days. There is currently no regular direct flight between Jeddah and Stockholm, so the shipment passes through a transit airport, and that is already counted in the time.
How much does shipping from Mecca to Sweden cost?
It depends on what you ship. A pilgrim’s suitcase and a carton of gifts are charged by weight, from SAR 23 for each kilogram by air; the smallest parcel, of no more than 5 kg, starts from SAR 110, and an envelope of papers from SAR 83. What goes by sea has three figures: SAR 5,500 and up for furniture in a shared container, SAR 11,000 and up for a full-house container, and SAR 2,800 and up for a saloon car. Two items set on request are then added: trucking from your district in Makkah to Jeddah, and delivery to your city in Sweden.
What does a 40-foot container from Mecca to Sweden cost?
It is set on request, because it moves with the shipping line’s rate from one week to the next. The figure quoted in the market is around USD 1,900 for the ocean freight alone, port to port, and it covers neither packing, nor trucking the container from Makkah, nor Swedish clearance, nor delivery. Ask for a price that runs all the way to the door and then compare.
What determines the price of international shipping from Mecca to Sweden?
Five things: the chargeable weight by air or the volume in cubic metres by sea, the transport method, where your home or hotel is in Makkah and whether a truck can reach it, the Swedish city and its distance from the port of Gothenburg, and whether the shipment enters under relief or pays 25% tax. The season in Makkah raises demand and narrows loading hours.
How long does a container take from Mecca until it reaches Sweden?
From 30 to 42 days from the door in Makkah to the consignee’s door. A day or two for packing and loading, then several days at Jeddah port, then 20 to 26 days at sea, then clearance and delivery inside Sweden. A part load sits towards the end of that range because it waits for the shared container to fill.
Do you collect a pilgrim’s luggage from the hotel room?
Yes, as far as the hotel management allows. In most hotels our representative goes up to the room door with the porter, and in some the handover takes place in the lobby. Either way the bags are weighed in front of you, numbered, and a receipt stating their count and weight is written before they leave the building.
Can Zamzam water be shipped with luggage to Sweden?
No. Zamzam water is not accepted in shipments; what a traveller may take is the dedicated pack carried personally from the airport, as the competent authorities decide. Dates, prayer rugs, prayer beads, abayas and copies of the Quran, on the other hand, ship without difficulty in closed cartons.
Are dates, coffee and spices allowed into Sweden?
Yes, in personal quantities. Dried fruit, coffee, tea and spices are permitted for individuals from outside the European Union, and dates are exempt from the plant-health certificate under current practice. What is banned is meat and dairy and anything made from them. We confirm the rules in force before shipping if the quantity is large.
What is the duty-free gift limit at Swedish Customs?
Under current practice it is SEK 600 for a gift sent by one private individual to another, without payment, on a single occasion, with the contents and value written on the parcel. Anything above that pays tax and duty. That is why we divide a pilgrim’s gifts into parcels in the recipients’ names rather than one carton of high value.
Do I pay customs on my used furniture when moving it to Sweden?
You do not if you are moving your residence there and have applied to Swedish Customs for relief. The conditions in current practice are that you have lived outside the European Union for at least a year, that the goods are yours and used, and that they enter within a year of your move. Without relief, 25% value added tax and a duty by item are charged.
Which Swedish port does a shipment from Mecca arrive at?
The port of Gothenburg on the west coast, the largest container port in Scandinavia. The container is discharged and cleared there, then continues by truck or rail to Stockholm, about 470 km away, and to Malmö, about 270 km away.
Do you ship cars from Mecca to Sweden?
Yes. The car is moved on a transporter from Makkah to Jeddah port and then shipped by sea, and the price starts from SAR 2,800 for a saloon. In Sweden a 10% duty and 25% tax are charged on it unless it enters as part of the effects of someone moving residence; it then goes through verification of origin and a registration inspection before it carries Swedish plates.
What documents are needed to ship appliances or luggage to Sweden?
For personal luggage: a passport copy, a contents list in English with the number and value of each item, and the consignee’s address and Swedish mobile number. Someone moving residence adds the relief application and proof of the move. Commercial goods need an invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the importer’s customs identification number. We issue the bill of lading and the export declaration ourselves.
Is there land freight from Mecca to Sweden?
We do not operate it. A truck has only two roles in our journey: from Makkah to Jeddah, and from the port of Gothenburg or the arrival airport to the address. Everything in between is sea or air, because the full overland route crosses many countries and borders and saves neither time nor money.
Do you ship from Sweden to Mecca?
Yes. Our agent collects from the address in Sweden, and the shipment arrives by air at Jeddah airport or by sea at Jeddah Islamic Port; we then truck it to Makkah and deliver it in the district. Used belongings are cleared as personal effects with a list, and new items pay a duty by type and 15% value added tax.
