Who ships from Turkey to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, and what do they ship?

Most people who ask for this service have bought something in Turkey and want it to arrive intact and at a known cost. They include the owner of a new home furnished from Istanbul’s showrooms, a shop owner importing clothes, abayas and fabrics, a contractor buying kitchens, lighting and doors, and a family returning from a stay in Turkey with its belongings. Each of them has a shipping method that suits them:

The shipper What they usually ship The method we suggest
Owner of a new house or villa Bedrooms, sitting rooms, dining tables, curtains and carpets A 20ft or 40ft container from Mersin
Owner of a clothing or soft-furnishings shop Ready-made clothes, towels, bed linen and fabrics Air for the urgent season, consolidated sea for stock
Contractor or interior design office Kitchens, doors, lighting, marble and finishing materials A full container loaded at the factory
Shopper from Turkish online stores Clothes, shoes and small household items An air parcel from the consolidation address in Istanbul
Someone returning from residence or study in Turkey Personal effects, used furniture and books A shared container, or air for a small amount
Trader in Dubai, Kuwait or Doha Furniture, foodstuffs and textiles in bulk A container to his country’s port through our partner there

What is the shipping service from Turkey to the Gulf states, and how do we run it?

The service is three connected links: collecting the goods from the Turkish supplier and preparing them, then carrying them internationally by ship or aircraft, then clearing and delivering them in the country of arrival. Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah, so we carry out the last link ourselves in the Kingdom. The first link is handled by partner agents inside Turkey who work to our instructions; we have no office under our own name there.

  • In Turkey: collection from the showroom, the factory or the store’s warehouse; weighing, measuring and photographing; extra packing where needed; and a Turkish export declaration.
  • On the way: booking space on the vessel or the aircraft, issuing the bill of lading in the consignee’s name, and sending the tracking number.
  • In the Kingdom: customs clearance through licensed brokers, then delivery to the house or the warehouse and unloading.
  • In the other Gulf states: our partner in the country of arrival collects the shipment from the port or the airport, clears it and delivers it, while we coordinate and follow up.

Shipping methods from Turkey and the time each takes: how long does a shipment take?

The time that matters to you is neither the sailing time nor the flight time, but the time from the day the goods leave the supplier to the day they enter your home. That is why we calculate it for you stage by stage. These are the stages of a full container leaving Istanbul or Bursa and discharged at Jeddah Islamic Port:

Stage What happens Usual time
Collection and loading in Turkey Gathering the goods from the suppliers, loading and sealing the container 2–4 days
The road to Mersin and export Truck to the port, export declaration and waiting for the vessel 3–6 days
Sailing The eastern Mediterranean, then the Suez Canal, then the Red Sea 7–12 days without a change of vessel
Jeddah Islamic Port Discharge, import declaration, inspection and payment of duties 2–4 working days
Delivery Truck from the port to your address, and unloading One day within Jeddah, longer for other cities

The time changes with the method and the destination. The next table brings all the methods together; the figures are door to door and carry a realistic margin, not the best case:

Method Route Door-to-door time For which shipment
Full container to Jeddah Mersin → Suez → Jeddah 15–25 days A home’s furniture or goods that fill a container
Shared container to Jeddah Consolidated in a Turkish warehouse, then sails 22–37 days From one cubic metre to 15
Container to Dammam or Riyadh Round the Arabian Peninsula to the Gulf, or Jeddah then a truck 25–40 days Consignees in the Eastern and Central regions
Container to Dubai, Kuwait and Doha Mersin → Suez → the Gulf ports 25–45 days Traders and residents in the Gulf
Air Istanbul Airport → Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam 3–5 days Samples, clothing and parcels
Land, when the route is available Through Iraq, or through Syria and Jordan 10–15 days as commonly quoted Confirmed before booking

What lengthens the time?

  • A late supplier: a factory that promised delivery on Monday and delivered on Thursday makes the container miss an entire sailing.
  • A change of vessel: some lines move the container to a second ship at an intermediate port, which adds a week or more to the sailing.
  • Vessel routing in the Red Sea: shipping lines adjust their routes according to conditions, so we confirm the route and the time with you on the day of booking.
  • A missing conformity certificate: commercial goods that arrive before their SABER certificate is complete wait in the port and incur storage charges.

Times for the other routes are on the transit times page.

The cost of shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states

A shipping bill from Turkey has four items: collection and preparation inside Turkey, the international freight, the duties and taxes in the country of arrival, and delivery to the address. The second item is the one for which a starting figure can be given; the others follow the supplier’s city, the type of goods and your address. The sea freight we quote per cubic metre is our tariff for the same sea voyage between Jeddah and Mersin, a voyage priced at similar figures in both directions.

Shipment Method and scope Price starts from
20ft container to Jeddah Sea freight from Mersin to Jeddah Islamic Port SAR 4,140
40ft container to Jeddah Sea freight from Mersin to Jeddah Islamic Port SAR 4,830
20ft container to Dammam Sea freight from Mersin to the port of Dammam SAR 4,310
Cubic metre in a shared container Sea freight, port to port SAR 415
Cubic metre on the consolidation service From the consolidation warehouse in Istanbul to your city in the Kingdom SAR 1,900
Document envelope or parcel up to one kilogram Express air SAR 64
Parcel up to 5 kg Air, door to door SAR 31 per kilogram
A 10 kg parcel Air SAR 240
Shipment of 30 kg or more Express air SAR 20.70 per kilogram
Commercial goods of 100 kg or more Air freight, airport to airport Set on request by weight and volume
Container to Dubai, Kuwait or Doha Sea, through our partner in the country of arrival Set on request
Collection in Turkey, clearance and delivery, land freight, and cars According to the city, the volume and the item Set on request

Prices quoted in the market for this direction vary very widely. By sea: a 20ft container between SAR 4,500 and 5,600 to Jeddah and about SAR 4,700 to 4,900 to Dammam, a 40ft container about SAR 5,250, and a cubic metre on a consolidation service about SAR 2,060. By air: a kilogram of commercial freight between SAR 7.50 and 9.40, express above 30 kg about SAR 22.50, door to door about SAR 34, and a 10 kg parcel about SAR 263. With international express couriers the first kilogram is between SAR 70 and 131. The spread exists because some figures are bare freight while others include clearance and duties.

Factor Its effect on the price
The supplier’s city A factory in Inegol or Kayseri is further from the port than a warehouse in Mersin, and the Turkish truck charge follows the distance
Volume and weight A vessel bills by cubic metre; an aircraft bills whichever is higher, scale weight or volumetric weight. Our CBM calculator gives you a first estimate
Port of arrival Jeddah is the Saudi port nearest the Suez Canal; Dammam and the Gulf ports are a longer sailing
Type of goods It sets the duty rate and whether a conformity certificate or a permit from a competent authority is needed
Scope of service Handover at the port, or clearance, delivery, unloading and assembly

How do you reduce the cost?

  • Ask the supplier to hand over the goods dismantled and flat in their cartons; a dismantled bedroom takes half the volume of an assembled one.
  • Put all your purchases in one shipment, since a single bill of lading is cleared once.
  • If your volume exceeds 15 cubic metres, work out the cost of a full container before choosing consolidation.
  • Ship by air only what you will sell this month, and leave next season’s stock for the vessel.
  • Prepare the certificate of origin and a correct invoice from day one; a day of storage charges in the port costs more than any discount you obtain.

What goes into pricing is detailed on the pricing factors page, and the cheapest method for each destination is in the article cheapest international shipping company in Saudi Arabia.

Sea freight from Mersin port in Turkey to Jeddah and Dammam

Sea freight from Mersin port in Turkey to Jeddah and Dammam

Mersin is Turkey’s sea gateway towards the Arabian Peninsula. It lies on the southern coast in the eastern Mediterranean, a short sail from the entrance to the Suez Canal, so a ship leaving it reaches the Red Sea days before one that left Istanbul. From there the container is discharged at Jeddah Islamic Port, the first major Saudi port on its way. The goods are loaded in a 20ft or 40ft container and leave on sailings that usually recur every one to two weeks.

The vessel’s route to Dammam is longer, because it continues south down the Red Sea, rounds the Arabian Peninsula and enters the Arabian Gulf. So we offer consignees in Riyadh and the Eastern Province two options and cost each of them: a container that sails to the port of Dammam, directly or with a change of vessel, or a container discharged at Jeddah that continues by truck to their city. From Dammam the railway reaches the dry port in Riyadh. Mersin is not the only Turkish port either; the choice follows the supplier’s city:

Loading port Location Suits goods from
Mersin The southern coast on the Mediterranean Adana, Gaziantep, Kayseri and Konya, and any shipment wanting the shortest sailing
Ambarli West of Istanbul on the Sea of Marmara Suppliers on the European side of Istanbul
Gemlik South of the Sea of Marmara The factories of Bursa and Inegol
Izmir The Aegean coast Izmir, Denizli and Manisa
Iskenderun The far east of the Mediterranean Hatay and south-eastern Turkey

Istanbul and Mersin are some 900 km apart by truck, so we cost both ways and pick the lower. The method is explained on the sea freight page, what happens to the container after arrival in the article international sea freight from Jeddah, and port details on the ports and gateways page.

A full container or space in a shared container?

Someone furnishing a whole villa need not think about it: a 40ft container is theirs alone. The doubt lies with the buyer of two bedrooms and a sitting room, or twenty cartons of clothes. The rule we work by: if your volume approaches half a 20ft container, ask for the full-container price and compare, because the gap narrows and a private container is opened by no one before customs.

Point of comparison Full container Shared container
Place of loading At the factory or in the consolidation warehouse In the consolidation warehouse with other people’s goods
Sailing date The first vessel after your goods are ready When the container is full
Handling One loading and one unloading Sorted in a warehouse on arrival
Time to Jeddah 15–25 days 22–37 days
Starts from SAR 4,140 for a 20ft SAR 415 per cubic metre

As a guide: a 20ft container holds nearly 28 cubic metres, which is the dismantled furniture of a three-room flat. A 40ft container holds nearly 58 cubic metres, enough for a villa or a soft-furnishings shop’s order. Internal dimensions are on the container sizes page.

Turkish furniture, textiles and goods from suppliers in Istanbul and Bursa to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf

Turkish furniture, textiles and goods from suppliers in Istanbul and Bursa to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf

Every Turkish product has its city. Whoever knows this map saves days of travelling around, and knows where our agent will collect the goods and how far that is from the port. Istanbul is the largest display market, with its furniture showroom complexes and wholesale clothing markets. Bursa, together with Inegol, is the centre of furniture making and home textiles. These are the best-known sources by product:

Product Where it is usually bought Shipping note
Bedrooms, sitting rooms and dining sets Inegol in Bursa province, the Masko and Modoko complexes in Istanbul, and Kayseri Ask for them dismantled in factory cartons
Towels, bed linen and soft furnishings Bursa and Denizli Compressed bales reduce the volume
Ready-made clothes and abayas The Laleli, Merter and Osmanbey markets in Istanbul Air for the season, sea for stock
Carpets and fitted carpet Gaziantep and Istanbul Rolled and wrapped against moisture
Kitchens, doors and lighting Factories in Istanbul, Bursa and Ankara Marble and glass in wooden crates
Foodstuffs and sweets Gaziantep and Istanbul Need a permit from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority

Before you pay the supplier, ask him three things: whether he hands over the goods packed for export, whether he issues an export invoice in your name or your establishment’s name, and whether he gives you a certificate of origin from the chamber of commerce. An export invoice is normally issued without Turkish value added tax, so confirm that with the seller before he charges it to you.

Consolidating orders from several suppliers in one container

Few people buy their whole home from one showroom. The bedroom comes from a factory in Inegol, the curtains from a shop in Istanbul, and the chandeliers from a third shop. If each order were shipped on its own you would pay three freight charges and three clearances. The consolidation service solves that, and this is how we run it:

  1. The supplier list: you send us each supplier’s name, what you bought from him and the date it will be ready.
  2. Collection: the agent’s truck calls at the showrooms and factories, or the supplier sends his goods to the warehouse.
  3. Checking: everything that arrives is counted, compared with your invoice and photographed, and we tell you of any shortage before loading, not after arrival.
  4. Reinforcement: whatever came weakly packed is repacked, and glass and marble go into wooden crates.
  5. Loading: the goods are stowed in one container under one bill of lading and a single packing list.

Shipping Turkish furniture: packing, loading and assembly

New Turkish furniture leaves the factory in packing that is enough for moving it within Turkey, and not always enough for a journey with two port cranes and two weeks at sea. So we review the packing of each piece at collection and make up what is missing:

Piece What we add to the factory packing How it is placed in the container
Bedroom and wardrobe panels Reinforced cardboard corners and stretch wrap Standing on edge and tight together
Sofas and sitting-room sets A fabric bag, then a plastic cover On top of the heavy crates, not under them
Marble tops, glass and mirrors Foam and a wooden crate made to size Upright and lashed to the container wall
Chandeliers and lighting Double-wall carton with padding on every side In the top row with a fragile mark

On arrival our crew opens the cartons and assembles the rooms in place if you asked for assembly at booking; for that it needs the assembly diagram the factory sends with each room, so ask the seller for it. Protection methods are in the packing guide, the full service is on the furniture shipping page, and for moving your home out of the Kingdom see international furniture shipping company from Saudi Arabia.

Shipping clothes, textiles and commercial goods from Turkey

A trader asks two things before the price: will my goods enter the Kingdom without obstacles, and what does a piece cost after freight and duties. The answer to the first begins before buying. Commercial goods are imported in the name of an establishment with a commercial registration, and many items fall under technical regulations that require a product conformity certificate and a certificate for each consignment through the SABER platform.

  • Clothes and fabrics: a label on every piece showing the country of origin, the size and the fabric composition; our advice is to have it fixed at the factory, not after arrival.
  • Electrical items and lighting: covered by technical regulations, so ask the factory for the test reports before paying.
  • Foodstuffs and cosmetics: registered with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and they need an Arabic label and sufficient shelf life.
  • Trademarks: counterfeit goods are confiscated, so do not buy anything bearing a logo the factory has no right to use.

We prepare an estimate of the cost per piece after freight, duty and tax before you confirm your order with the factory. The service is on the commercial shipping page, and what we offer businesses is in the article logistics services in Saudi Arabia.

Parcels from Turkish online stores and personal purchases

Many Turkish stores do not ship outside Turkey, or ship at a high charge per item. The solution is a consolidation address inside Istanbul: you order from several stores to the same address, your purchases gather there and leave in one parcel or two cartons instead of ten small parcels.

  • Value: the true value is written on the declaration. In current practice, personal parcels arriving in the Kingdom are subject to duty and tax according to their value, and we give you the estimate in advance.
  • Delivery: to your national address, and the courier calls before arriving.

Details of the service are on the parcel shipping page.

Air freight from Istanbul to Saudi Arabia

Air freight from Istanbul to Saudi Arabia

Istanbul Airport is among the airports best connected to the Kingdom, with direct flights to Riyadh and Jeddah on most days of the week and a flight time of about four hours. That is why air suits everything whose value lies in its speed: a sample the trader wants to see before ordering the quantity, clothing for a season that will not wait, and a parcel of personal purchases. The shipment is handed to the airport after weighing and screening and reaches the consignee’s door in the Kingdom’s cities in 3–5 days; most delay, when it occurs, is in clearance rather than in flight.

  • What goes by air: samples, clothing, parcels, documents, spare parts and light home accessories.
  • Chargeable weight: the greater of the scale weight and the volumetric weight, the latter being length × width × height in centimetres ÷ 6000. Work it out with the volumetric weight calculator.
  • Starting prices: SAR 64 for a parcel up to one kilogram, SAR 240 for a 10 kg parcel, and SAR 20.70 per kilogram from 30 kg upwards; commercial goods of 100 kg or more are priced on request by weight and volume.
  • Arrival airports: Riyadh (King Khalid), Jeddah (King Abdulaziz) and Dammam (King Fahd), whichever has a suitable flight on the day.
  • Flight restrictions: no perfumes, aerosols or flammable liquids, and lithium batteries only inside their devices.

The method is explained on the air freight page, and prices for every destination are in the article air freight from Saudi Arabia. For those sending in the other direction, see air freight from Riyadh to Turkey.

Air, sea or land from Turkey?

The rule is short: what is valued for its speed flies, and what is valued for its volume sails. This is the difference in figures:

Point of comparison Air Sea
Time to the Kingdom 3–5 days 15–40 days depending on the port
Charging unit The kilogram The cubic metre or the container
Best for Samples, clothing and parcels Furniture, textiles and wholesale goods
Point of departure Istanbul Airport The port of Mersin and the ports of Istanbul and Izmir
Starts from SAR 20.70 per kilogram from 30 kg upwards SAR 415 per cubic metre

Land has two known routes: through Iraq to the Jadidat Arar border post, on which truck crossings under the international road transport (TIR) system have been trialled without transferring the load, or through Syria and Jordan to the Haditha border post. But the state of the crossings and the transit procedures change, so we do not build a regular service on it, and we confirm the available route before promising it to you. Truck freight is explained on the land freight page, and the general comparison on the shipping methods comparison page.

Customs duties and taxes on Turkish shipments in Saudi Arabia

Duties are not part of the freight charge and are paid to customs on arrival. The customs value is calculated on the price of the goods plus freight and insurance, then the duty is calculated, then value added tax on the total. This is a summary of current practice, and we check the rule in force for your item before every shipment:

Case Current practice in the Kingdom
New commercial goods Duty between 5% and 15% for most items according to the tariff heading, some higher, then 15% value added tax
New furniture for your home Treated as new goods, so duty and tax are paid on it even if it is for personal use
Used effects and furniture of a returnee Exempt on conditions: used, within the limits of personal use, coming from the place of residence, and arriving within six months of the owner’s arrival
Conformity A product conformity certificate and a shipment certificate through SABER for items under technical regulations
Food, cosmetics and medicines Registration and a permit from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority before shipping
Personal parcel Duty and tax according to the declared value, in current practice

We carry out clearance through licensed customs brokers. Its steps are on the customs clearance page, and details of Jeddah’s port and airport are in the article customs clearance in Jeddah.

Documents required for shipping from Turkey

Half the problems on this route are caused by a piece of paper: an invoice in a name other than the importer’s, a packing list that does not match the number of cartons, or a certificate of origin requested from the supplier only after sailing. We ask for copies of the documents before loading and review them with the broker; these are the documents by type of shipment:

Type of shipment Documents
Commercial goods Commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, bill of lading, the importer’s commercial registration, and the two SABER certificates where required
New furniture for an individual Purchase invoice in the consignee’s name, packing list, copy of the national ID or residence permit, and the bill of lading
Used effects and furniture Passport, proof of previous residence in Turkey and of the date of return, and a numbered contents list
Personal parcel The consignee’s name and ID or residence number, national address, and a description and value of the contents
Car Registration or title document, purchase invoice if imported, the owner’s ID, and a conformity certificate

On the Turkish side the agent issues the export declaration, for which he needs the supplier’s invoice and tax details. Sample papers are on the shipping documents page.

Shipping from Turkey to the UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman

The Gulf states share the customs basics and differ in the details. The unified duty is 5% on most items in current practice, value added tax differs from one state to another, and each state has its own conformity body and conditions. We coordinate delivery in these states through partner agents in each country, and its price is set on request. These are the main points, and we confirm what is in force before shipping:

Country Port and airport of arrival What you need to know
UAE Jebel Ali Port, and Dubai Airport 5% value added tax; a partnership agreement between the UAE and Turkey lowers the duty on many items with a certificate of origin
Kuwait Shuwaikh Port, and Kuwait Airport 5% duty as a rule, and no value added tax applied in current practice
Qatar Hamad Port, and Hamad International Airport 5% duty as a rule, and no value added tax applied in current practice
Bahrain Khalifa bin Salman Port, and Bahrain Airport 10% value added tax
Oman Sohar Port, and Muscat Airport 5% value added tax

The sea time to the Gulf ports is between 25 and 45 days door to door. Information on each destination is on the shipping to the UAE, shipping to Kuwait and shipping to Qatar pages, and for those shipping from the Kingdom to its neighbours see shipping from Saudi Arabia to the Gulf states.

What cannot be shipped from Turkey to Saudi Arabia, or needs a permit

Turkish markets openly sell items that are prohibited or restricted in the Kingdom. One such item inside a furniture container is enough to delay the whole container until it is dealt with. Go through this list before you buy:

Item Its status on entering the Kingdom
Alcoholic drinks and anything containing alcohol for drinking Prohibited
Pork and its products Prohibited
Narcotics and psychotropic substances Prohibited
Weapons, ammunition and stun devices Prohibited without a permit from the competent authority
Counterfeit branded goods Confiscated
Medicines, cosmetics and supplements With a permit from the Saudi Food and Drug Authority, and in a personal quantity for an individual
Foodstuffs and sweets in commercial quantities With registration, an Arabic label and an expiry date
Cash, gold and original documents Not shipped; they stay with their owner

The wider list is on the prohibited items page. For anything you do not find there, send us its picture and description before paying the supplier.

Delivering shipments from Turkey in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and the Gulf cities

Delivering shipments from Turkey in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam and the Gulf cities

Delivery day is the day the service is tested. The released container is carried on a truck to your address, the workers open it in front of you and check the cartons against the list, then take the pieces to the rooms you specify. These are the delivery cities and how the shipment reaches them:

City The shipment arrives through Note
Jeddah, Makkah and Taif Jeddah Islamic Port, and King Abdulaziz Airport The shortest time on the route; entry to Makkah follows truck hours
Riyadh and Qassim Jeddah then a truck, or Dammam then the train to the dry port, and King Khalid Airport We compare both routes for you by cost and time
Dammam, Khobar, Jubail and Al-Ahsa The port of Dammam, and King Fahd Airport A longer sailing and a short delivery
Madinah, Yanbu and Tabuk Jeddah port then a truck Added to the Western Region runs
Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah Jebel Ali Port, and Dubai Airport Through our partner in the UAE
Kuwait Shuwaikh Port, and Kuwait Airport Through our partner there
Doha Hamad Port, and Hamad International Airport Through our partner there

Tell us at booking the floor, the width of the door and the lift, as some Turkish sitting-room pieces are wider than flat doors and need extra dismantling or lifting over the balcony. What we offer in the three main cities is in the articles international shipping companies in Jeddah, international shipping company in Riyadh and international shipping company in Dammam, and all cities are on the service cities page.

Car shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia

Cars on this route are two entirely different cases. The first is a Saudi car that its owner took to Turkey for the summer or for a stay and wants to bring back; it returns on its own plates and registration and is not treated as an import. The second is a car bought in Turkey, which is subject to the Kingdom’s car import conditions, and we advise reviewing them before buying, not after.

  • Method of transport: on a RoRo vessel, onto which the car is driven uncovered and its wheels lashed, or inside a 20ft container in which it is secured and sealed.
  • Import conditions: current practice is that the car must be no older than five years, left-hand drive and compliant with Saudi specifications, and must not be accident-damaged or flood-damaged.
  • Duties: 5% customs duty in current practice and 15% value added tax on an imported car.
  • Before leaving Turkey: its customs records there are closed; a car that entered Turkey on temporary admission is struck off its owner’s passport on export.
  • Price: set on request according to the size of the car and the port.

Read about each option under RoRo car shipping and container car shipping; for a car going the other way, see car shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Turkey.

Steps for shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf states

  1. Contact: you send on WhatsApp what you have bought or intend to buy, the supplier’s city and the delivery city.
  2. Reviewing the item: we make sure it is permitted and whether it needs a conformity certificate or a permit, and estimate the duty and tax for you.
  3. The price: we suggest the method and the port, and send a detailed price with its items, what it covers and what it does not.
  4. Collection in Turkey: the agent contacts the suppliers, collects, checks and photographs.
  5. Loading and export: the container is loaded or the shipment handed to the airport, and the export declaration and the bill of lading are issued.
  6. Follow-up: you receive the tracking number and a message at every stage.
  7. Clearance: the import declaration is lodged, the duties and tax are paid, and the shipment is released.
  8. Delivery: delivery, unloading and checking against the list, with assembly if it is part of the booking.

Tracking parcels, following the shipment and insuring it

Follow-up starts before the shipment moves, from the moment it is collected from the supplier. You receive pictures of the goods in the warehouse and of the container after stowing, with its seal number. After that the tracking number takes over: the container number at sea and the waybill number in the air:

  • At sea: you type the container number on the shipping line’s website and read the vessel’s name, the last port where it was recorded and the expected arrival date.
  • In the air: you type the air waybill number on the airline’s website and learn whether the shipment has departed and whether it has arrived. The method is on the track your shipment page.
  • Insurance: optional, issued before the shipment moves at a percentage of the invoice value. Its terms are on the cargo insurance page.

The opposite direction: shipping from Saudi Arabia to Turkey

The route works in both directions. From the Kingdom to Turkey we ship the furniture, belongings, cars and parcels of people relocating, by container from Jeddah Islamic Port to Mersin and by aircraft to Istanbul. The rules there are different, as Turkish customs has its own conditions for a resident’s effects and for the temporary entry of a car. All of that is explained in the article shipping company from Saudi Arabia to Turkey, for people in Jeddah there is shipping company from Jeddah to Turkey, and destination information is on the shipping to Turkey page.

Tips before buying and shipping from Turkey

  • Ask about the item’s customs treatment in the Kingdom before you pay the supplier a deposit, not after the goods are ready.
  • Do not transfer the full price of the goods before the agent has collected and checked them; leave a part payable on collection if the seller accepts.
  • Have the invoice show the true value; an understated value is discovered at inspection and delays release.
  • Time the furniture’s arrival to the date the house is ready, and if it comes earlier, book storage from the start.

How do you choose the best shipping company from Turkey to the Gulf states?

Istanbul alone has dozens of offices advertising shipping to the Gulf, and some of them operate with nothing but a name and a phone. Published reviews help if you read their details rather than their star count: what the reviewer shipped, where to, how late it was and how the problem was handled. Alongside reviews, look at these signs:

Item A good sign A sign that calls for caution
Legal status A commercial registration with its number written, and a receipt in an establishment’s name A transfer to a personal account with no receipt
The price Itemised, and states what it does not cover One “all-inclusive” figure with no breakdown
Customs Asks you about the item and the conformity certificate before shipping Promises to bring in anything without papers
The time A door-to-door time with a margin The sailing time alone, as if it were the arrival time
Documentation Pictures of the goods at collection and a seal number for the container No pictures and no tracking number
After arrival A licensed broker and someone following the delivery Hands you the bill of lading and leaves you to the port

Common mistakes when shipping from Turkey

  • Buying commercial goods and then asking about the conformity certificate after the container has sailed.
  • Relying on showroom packing for a sea voyage, so glossy surfaces arrive scratched.
  • Writing an invoice below the true value in the hope of a lower duty, so the goods are revalued and the shipment is delayed.
  • Spreading purchases over small successive shipments instead of consolidating them, so clearance and its charge are repeated.
  • Putting perfumes or loose batteries in an air parcel, so the parcel is returned from the airport.
  • Forgetting to measure the doors and the lift of the house before buying a large sitting-room set that cannot be dismantled.
  • Booking the container before confirming when the last supplier will be ready, so waiting charges are paid.

Frequently asked questions about shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia and the Gulf

What is the best shipping company from Turkey to the Gulf states?

The best one for you is the one that proves three things before you pay: a commercial registration and a receipt in the name of an establishment, a written price that separates collection in Turkey from the sea or air freight and from clearance and delivery, and a known broker at the port of arrival. Home Safe is a Saudi establishment based in Jeddah under commercial registration 4030601060, and it manages collection inside Turkey through partner agents there. Message us on 0552803439.

How long does a shipment from Turkey take to reach Saudi Arabia?

By air, 3 to 5 days from Istanbul Airport to the consignee’s door in Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam. By sea, 15 to 25 days for a full container from the port of Mersin to your address in Jeddah, and 22 to 37 days for a shared container. A container bound for Dammam or Riyadh usually takes 25 to 40 days, depending on the vessel’s route.

How much does shipping from Turkey to Saudi Arabia cost?

Sea freight for a 20ft container from Mersin to Jeddah Islamic Port starts from SAR 4,140, for a 40ft container from SAR 4,830, and a cubic metre in a shared container from SAR 415. By air, a parcel up to one kilogram starts from SAR 64, a 10 kg parcel from SAR 240, and from SAR 20.70 per kilogram at 30 kg and over. Collection inside Turkey, clearance and delivery are added according to your shipment.

Is the shipment inspected by customs?

Yes. Every shipment entering the Kingdom passes through customs at the port or the airport, where its documents are reviewed and it may be opened for inspection or scanned by X-ray. Commercial goods covered by technical regulations have their certificate matched on the SABER platform.

What customs duty applies to goods arriving from Turkey?

Current practice in the Kingdom is a customs duty of between 5% and 15% for most items according to the tariff heading, with some items rated higher, followed by 15% value added tax calculated on the value of the goods plus freight, insurance and duty. We check the heading of your item before you buy and tell you the approximate amount, and we confirm the rule in force before shipping.

Are my used household goods exempt if I return from Turkey to settle in the Kingdom?

In current practice, personal effects and used household furniture are exempt for a citizen returning from residence abroad and for a foreigner arriving to live here for the first time, provided they are used, within the limits of personal use, coming from the place of residence, and arriving within six months of the owner’s arrival. New furniture bought from Turkish showrooms does not fall under this exemption.

Is insurance available for shipments coming from Turkey?

Yes, insurance is an optional service added at booking, and its premium is a percentage of the value of the goods written on the invoice. We advise it for containers of new furniture and for commercial goods. The terms and limits of cover are written in the insurance policy itself.

How do I track my shipment from Turkey?

After shipping you receive the container number or the air waybill number. You enter the container number on the shipping line’s website to see the vessel’s name and its expected arrival date, and the air waybill number on the airline’s website. We also send you a WhatsApp message at every stage.

Do you deliver the shipment to the door of the house?

Yes. After customs release a truck carries your shipment from the port or the airport to your address in Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam or another city in the Kingdom, and the workers unload it inside the house or the warehouse. Delivery in Dubai, Kuwait and Doha is carried out through partner agents in those cities.

What happens if the shipment is delayed or damaged?

If it is delayed we tell you the reason and the new date; most delays are caused by a change of vessel or a missing document at customs. If a piece arrives damaged, write your remark on the delivery note before signing and photograph it in its carton, and we then open the claim with the insurer if the shipment is insured. The limits of liability are written in the booking confirmation.

Do I get my money back if I cancel the order?

The cancellation and refund terms are written in the booking confirmation we send you before payment, so read them before you transfer. The practical rule is that whatever has not yet been carried out can be stopped, while whatever has actually been booked on the vessel or the aircraft, or carried out in collection and packing, has its cost.

Can I ship orders from several Turkish suppliers in one container?

Yes, and it is what we arrange most on this route. Our agent collects your purchases from the furniture showrooms and textile factories in Istanbul, Bursa and elsewhere, gathers them in one warehouse, checks them against your invoices and photographs them, and then everything is loaded into one 20ft or 40ft container under a single bill of lading in your name.

Is there land freight from Turkey to Saudi Arabia?

The land route exists but it is not stable. A truck crosses Iraq to the Jadidat Arar border post, or crosses Syria and Jordan to the Haditha border post, and the state of the crossings and the transit procedures keep changing. So we promise it only after confirming the route available on the day of your request, and our regular service relies on sea and air.

What may not be shipped from Turkey to the Kingdom?

Alcoholic drinks and anything containing alcohol for drinking, pork and its products, narcotics, weapons and their ammunition without a permit, e-cigarettes in commercial quantities without a licence, and counterfeit branded goods. Medicines, cosmetics and foodstuffs in commercial quantities need registration with the Saudi Food and Drug Authority.

Do you ship a car from Turkey to Saudi Arabia?

Yes, after reviewing its status. A Saudi car that its owner drove or shipped to Turkey returns on its own plates and registration, in a container or on a RoRo vessel. A car bought there is subject to the Kingdom’s import conditions, and current practice is that it must be no older than five years, left-hand drive and compliant with the specifications. Its price is set on request.
